Bondage In Fear

Hello all! Can you believe it is already August and we will all be reunited in just a few short weeks? I am very excited to say the least! Just shortly under a year ago, Bryce and I had the incredible privilege of moving to the great city of Grand Forks.  The other day as I was thinking about our journey and transition here, I couldn’t help but remember a very significant point in our transition.  During our two-week vacation right before arriving here, we went out to visit some family in Iowa.  While we were there we were in a very serious car accident.  I happened to be the one driving our explorer and it had just finished raining, I lost control of the vehicle while at an interchange resulting in a roll over.  Thankfully all 7 of us were not injured.  Due to this accident, I had to deal with some great fear for the next few months.  Every time I would drive in the rain, I would almost be shaking with white knuckled hands holding onto the steering wheel, replaying in my mind what had happened.  This went on for a few months.  Pastor Nathan did a sermon series last fall, if you guys remember it, was called “Freedom more than a name” and one of the weeks talked about fear.  He spoke something that has resonated in my life over and over again.  “Fear is looking at a situation without God in it.”  

It is inevitable that you will face the bondage of fear from either situations that may come in the future or those that have happened in the past. I call it “bondage of fear” because that is exactly what it is, it is bondage in life. It can hold you back from having another close relationship, from forgiving a father or mother, it can hold you back from stepping out in faith. It can keep you from walking in freedom and fulfilling the full purpose of what God has in store for you. Fear is paralyzing.

We read about Peter being faced with the bondage of fear in Matthew 14:22-35.  The disciples were out on a boat in the middle of the night when they spot Jesus walking on the water amongst a storm. Jesus tells Peter to step out in faith and do the impossible and walk on the water despite the storm. Peter, having his eyes fixed on Jesus, didn’t hesitate for a moment and stepped into the impossible.  The moment Peter took his eyes off of Jesus, fear overtook him when he began to focus on the situation around him and he began to sink.

Peter had no reason to fear with the circumstances around him because Jesus was there. 1 John 4:18 talks about Gods perfect love and how there is no fear in love. Perfect love casts out all fear. When we have our eyes fixed on Jesus and understand Gods love, fear is absent and we can walk confidently in every situation knowing that He is in control.

The promise of God’s plan and love for me was the revelation that cast out all fear in me the moment that fear would grip me when I got behind the wheel. Every time I got behind it, there was a constant reminder and decision to keep my eyes on Jesus and know he was in that situation. No matter what causes fear in your life, whether it was a past, present, or future situation, I encourage you to fix your eyes on Jesus and invite him into every situation.  His perfect love truly does cast out all fear. 

I am so excited to see you all very soon. I encourage you to circle yourself daily with the promises that are in God’s Word. Then you will be prepared in the moment when you are faced with fear. So continue to dive into His Word. Love you all and praying that God is speaking to you and revealing HImself to you more and more everyday!
