it's heavily implied in ocarina of time that skull kids are what happens when a regular hylian child wanders into the kokiri forest--they get lost forever and completely forget who they used to be, essentially also frozen in time the way kokiri are, but without a sense of self that might constitute truly living. A metaphor for death by neglect, basically, and a reflection of what link could have been if the deku tree didn't choose to take him in. but yeah it's pretty likely that the skull kid in majora's mask also used to be a hylian child

If the twins were born as Maegor’s children instead (the mother could be Tyanna of the Tower due to their dark hair, or it could be Rhaena).

I went with Rhaena and played around a bit here with timeline/events/etc. It felt a little more interesting to move the timeline back a few years, so that Maegor weds Rhaena earlier (in 43 AC, very shortly after Aegon's death). Visenya always wanted the match, so I could see it happening in short order if they had managed to capture her or her daughters earlier.

(I like to think that this means Viserys lives, because Rhaena is there to advocate for his life--assuming Alysanne even still tries to escape! Technically, one of her grandsons will be king, and will have one of Aegon's daughters for a wife. Though I expect a political mess a few years later as Jaehaerys weighs his options.)

Jon aka Aerion has silver-blond hair just this once, because otherwise Rhaena is likely getting executed for adultery! And Rhaegar gets to be Rhaegar because of twin name symmetry!

There was yet a chance to secure her family’s safety, if she could be clever about it. Twenty hours of labor had taken their toll, but she had enough wits about her to take advantage of this rare opportunity.

“They must have dragon eggs for their cradles,” she said. “Just as I chose for my siblings, so that they grow strong.”

Her presence was remembered at last, and there was a belated rush of murmured congratulations from those attending. Even her great-aunt seemed in high spirits, in contrast with her usual dour countenance. Rhaena gladly took her babes in her arms, relieved to find that they lacked their father’s monstrous frame. They looked as her daughters had, though their cries were lustier.

They calmed in her arms, blinking at her with furious concentration, and she smiled for what felt the first time since she had been seized, along with her daughters, by a triumphant Maegor, fresh from killing her husband. His nephew.

It had been his mother’s notion that he take her for his fourth wife, the match she had always desired, and Aegon had not been six moons dead when she found herself wedded and pregnant once more.

“There are many to choose from at Dragonstone,” her great-aunt said with a nod.

Her breasts were laden with milk already, which was a boon—it had taken several days until she had been able to properly nurse Aerea and Rhaella. She held one of their little faces to each breast, and sagged back onto the fresh blankets, exhausted.

The attending party disappeared one by one, and others were summoned. Announcements were drafted, and a tourney was already being prepared. Rhaena waited patiently until all were gone but Maegor and her great-aunt, when the babes had nursed to their fill and were looking around in sleepy confusion.

“My husband,” she said, managing to speak the words without baring her teeth. “I know that you have taken many to wife, for want of an heir, but a dragon king needs a dragon wife. I have borne your heirs as swiftly as I bore Aegon’s, twice at once. What need have you of any other queen?”

Her great-aunt took her hand, her hands as lacking in warmth as her smile, but Rhaena knew that in this, she was an ally. “My good-daughter speaks true. This is the match that was meant for you, despite your brother’s protests. Your other wives will scheme and turn their jealousy to spite, but it will not fill their barren wombs. Now is the time to set them aside, as you proclaim your sons to the realm.”

It was Queen Tyanna who her great-aunt most dearly desired to be rid of—one snake recognizing another, Rhaena presumed.

Maegor hesitated only briefly, eyes falling upon his newborn sons, at which moment a fire seemed to enter them. “It shall be done. I have no need of them.”

Her husband’s jealousy over his sons’ love was not a danger that Rhaena thought she would have to navigate, and yet it loomed over every interaction. She was spared the worst of it, since she was their own mother, but their affections were otherwise guarded jealously. Her brother Viserys, who had become their favorite in quick fashion, was appointed to the Kingsguard and given assignments that kept him from their company whenever it became too much for the king.

They were bright things, her little sons. Though they were not yet three, they spoke with equal clarity to their sisters, who were nearing five, and they seemed almost aware of their father’s ever present desire for control.

He was afforded their full attention when in his presence, rewarded with smiles and displays of acuity that never failed to please him. All of their accomplishments were extensions of his, naturally. Their strength and balance came from his, their quick grasp of speaking and even High Valyrian all due to his superior blood. On the rare occasions where he grew displeased, it was with something that was due to her influence, her blood.

I dare him to find fault with them, Rhaena thought fiercely. The arrogance to believe that only he possesses fire.

Today, the twins had accompanied him to a small council meeting, and Maegor had declared them the equal of any in the room.

“That says more of whose counsel he keeps,” she muttered, to a giggle from Rhaegar. She smiled at him. “Do you agree, little dragon? Yours is the more recent opinion.”

Aerion meanwhile was happily swinging one of the play swords that Maegor had commissioned after Rhaena had spent a week convincing him that a miniature sword, blade and all, was not appropriate for the twins’ age. She could almost believe that either could be trusted with one, but she knew that Rhaella could not.

Rhaegar bounded over to join his brother and she watched them with amusement. In two more years, they would doubtless be the terrors of the training yard.

“My queen?”

She turned to the boys’ nurse, who stood uncertainly in the doorway. “Yes?”

“Shall I take the princes to be bathed and dressed?”

Rhaena had lost track of the hour. A delegation from Volantis had arrived to great fanfare, bearing expensive gifts and promises of rich trade agreements. In the aftermath of her husband’s war on the Faith, such relief was sorely needed for the realm’s coffers to recover.

She rose. “Yes. Bring them to my solar after.” She would need to see that her daughters were also properly dressed for the occasion.

you assume he's just stressed about the upcoming comeback. his eyes never leaving his laptop, headphones on 24/7, and you were pretty sure everyone else in the dorm could hear seonghwa scolding him more than hongjoong did.

"what do you think hongjoong's been working on?" wooyoung asks one night while you and him are piled in his bed watching a movie.

"what are you talking about?" you ask, only half paying attention to what he is saying, eyes focused on the movie in front of you.

"on his laptop! he's been on it more than usual, think he's working on a secret project?" he pegs, making you sit up a little in order to look at your boyfriend.

"secret project?" you echo and he nods, sitting up as well.

"i mean... aren't you a little curious about what he's working on? not letting any of us see it," he says and you think about how wooyoung is kind of making a point.

"i guess... but is it really any of our business on what he's working on?"

"whatever," you say with an annoyed tone that both of you know is fake. wooyoung smiles at you, kissing your cheek before you both seemingly let the conversation die as you both fall back into watching the movie.

you don't think about hongjoong's 'secret project' until a week later when you are in the recording studio with him and eden. you were the last one to record your lines, the others having finished and doing... whatever. you were sitting on the couch, patiently waiting your turn and looking over your lines. that's when your eyes drifted to hongjoong's laptop that was open. a singular folder titled 'y/n' with several files in it.

why did that folder have your name on it?

your eyes went from hongjoong's laptop to the male himself who was sitting there talking to eden about the lines that had already been recorded. eden lets out a sigh before he's turning in his seat and standing up.

"we'll be right back, y/n, and then we'll start your recording," eden says and you nod your head watching as him and hongjoong leave the room.

so you move over to where you can better access his laptop, eyes darting to door, knowing that hongjoong could come back any minute. you gotta be fast.

they were all songs. several of them by the looks of it, all them untitled however. damn. was he writing songs about you? you felt your heart picking up at the thought of hongjoong – the guy you've had a crush on for several years now, writing not one, but several songs about you.

licking your lips, you clicked on the first file. letting it open the music software that hongjoong used when making songs, you noticed his headphones laying on the table and decided to pick them up. placing them on your ears, you clicked play and allowed the song to begin.

you are immediately greeted with hongjoong's voice, he's talking to you, addressing you personally.

"hey, y/n, this feels a little silly to be doing, but i don't know how else to tell you how i feel. i think," he takes a pause, "i've been feeling this special way about you for a while now. i've always admired how you work, so dedicated. i'm glad to have you as a member of ateez... as my... friend. you're someone i cherish," he says with a laugh. "i'm recording this in the middle of the night, its about two in the morning right now, and i know i should be sleeping, but i just can't."

you can imagine him sitting alone in his studio, mic pressed to his lips as he speaks into it, recording his thoughts. he probably has sleep-bags underneath his eyes, lips pouting and a hair slightly tossed from him running his fingers through it all night.

"i can't sleep when you're always on my mind. when i think you've made me fall in love with you... i think i love you, y/n. but i'm afraid to confess to you directly. i know... you're dating san, yunho, and wooyoung – i'm happy for you, but i also want to be someone you can love like that. someone you can call a lover and not just a captain." he lets out a sigh before he continues. "i think i'm jealous of our members, honestly. i can't tell you everything i feel in fear of you not returning my feelings, so i'll just dedicate these songs to you."

the file ends and you feel like a wave of emotions have crashed over you. how long has he felt like this? how long has he kept his feelings hidden from you?

you can't help but immediately play the next file, hitting play and letting the melody of the song start before hongjoong's voice – singing this time – fills your ears. you listen as he sings, the lyrics confessing his feelings and talking about how you make him feel. you were about a minute through the song before the headphones were suddenly ripped off your head.

turning your head, you make eye contact with an angry hongjoong. face red and you can only imagine smoke coming out of his nose.

"what the hell are you doing?" hongjoong asks, his tone something you have never heard before, at least not directed towards you that is. you find yourself opening and closing your mouth, but nothing coming out.

you watch as his eyes go to his laptop screen, he takes in what you had been listening to before he looks back at you in complete horror. "what have you done?" he asks in total disbelief.

"i-i- hongjoong– i," you stumble over your words, not knowing what to say.

"i can't believe you went through my stuff? you had no fucking right to do that, y/n!" he says, as he reaches over to pull his laptop towards himself, away from you.

"i-i'm sorry, hongjoong, i was just... i saw it had my name and–

"so you think that gave you a right to look at my stuff!?" he cuts off, voice loud and full of shock.

"hongjoong, can we– can we please talk about this?"
