ok honestly speaking i think one of the biggest roots of luke’s tragedy is that he’s not extraordinary by himself. he failed his quest, he as a child of hermes doesnt have any powers of his own (until diary of luke castellan, which was written and published by rick post-tlo, and even then it’s just lock-picking), his most striking overt ability is that he’s a good swordsman. everything else, he has no recourse but to earn through charisma then alliance then subterfuge. compare that to percy who’s written to be a force of nature unto himself, who is an immediate natural at arms, who has in-text yet to discover a limit to his power save for what he can imagine, who more or less has his father’s support. i cant even say that luke was dead from the beginning because the curse that broke may goes back entire decades before he was even born; he was dead before he was even conceived. the prophecy that shaped him into a monster is also the prophecy that turned him into a sacrifice

#where is the line how do you determine who is a “little power” and who is basically a god#who is the standard#bc the average person the average town has nothing against the average 14th level adventurer lol via @veththeebrave I wanted to make this post because just to demonstrate, Keyleth is obviously not as limitless as the gods, but when you stack her up against a commoner it's...remarkably not dissimilar:
A commoner has stats of 10 across the board, 1d8 HP (4 or 5 on average), and an AC of 10. (source)
Keyleth has 147 HP (well over 10x theirs). Her DC is 21 and her spell attack bonus is +12, and she has the cantrip Thorn Whip which deals 4d6 damage, or on average, 14 damage. Unless she rolls a natural 1 she hits, and on average she would perma-kill a commoner. This is not counting her 22 spell slots of various levels, all of which could kill the average commoner. She could cast Storm of Vengeance, wildshape indefinitely while maintaining concentration, and quite reasonably level an entire town and kill every commoner within it while still having almost all of her daily power intact. She is also going to live to be 1800 years old, and is a political leader.
Do we kill Keyleth? Hell, do we kill Ashton, who has nearly as much HP as Keyleth and will surpass her within 2 levels max, 1 if Taliesin rolls well, can resist unconsciousness, can invoke the power of a titan for a minute, and also with a +11 with their hammer hits any commoner unless they roll a nat 1 and at minimum knocks them unconscious (+2 from the hammer, +4 from strength, minimum 2 damage as it's a 2d6 weapon) with even the lightest deliberate attack?
What is your power threshold that is inherently unfair, and at what level is killing everyone of this threshold the solution?

I can't stop thinking about how Kory looks exactly like the goddess X'hal. How they look identical while unleashing their power and how meaningful that is. How Kory is the image of the goddess her people worship 🥹

People are always angry at anyone who chooses very individual standards for his life; because of the extraordinary treatment which that man grants to himself, they feel degraded, like ordinary beings.

Green Arrow story arc in which an industrial catastrophe is about to decimate the city (think like highly poisonous, worse than chloride gas, people will die and they will die screaming if this thing touches them) and through comics shenanigans Ollie and Mia find the beating heart of the city from beneath the veil or something and it's a literal star, like it's a ball of beautiful blue light that's a fragment of starlight and someone warns them not to get closer because it's dangerous but they don't listen because "I'm not worried. I know her" and Star can tell how much Ollie and Mia love the city and she gives them temporary powers to help them save the city and Ollie is like, running and jumping from the sky at superhuman speed and hearing the voices of the people in the city and he takes down the bad guys using that. He's hoping that by making them give him the info of what chemicals they've used they'll be able to figure out medicine that helps mitigate the damage and cure people.
However, this proves unnecessary as meanwhile Mia stays behind with the star for longer because "I know what I have to do" and then she has a scene where she's absolutely glowing in blue light and levitates over the city and pushes the toxic cloud back and contains it with the sheer intensity of her determination and love for the city.
And then she floats back to the people and heals all the first responders who got hurt by the cloud by pushing the light into them. After she's healed the last one, the light fades and she faints, exhausted. She wakes up a day later unharmed and she and Ollie hug in joy after learning that the city is really safe. She later explains to Connor (who was away on a mission) what happened and he asks if the powers are really gone and Mia says yes, but that however she still feels the city's warmth in her chest and has faith that if she ever needs the city's strength to save her again, it'll be there.

I still kind of think Maia’s ultimate mission should have been to assassinate Tekēhu.

did you guys know that my next year’s roster for my world lit class was so over-full that I had the scheduler come to me and be like “you have to help me decide who’s getting into your class because every time I cut someone I get an email protesting vigorously but there just isn’t room for them all”
#teaching tag#lol#this is a BLATANT flex but it’s been a week from hell so I am indulging#shrug#it’s a combination of the fact that I am not AP#and the course material is a little easier#but also. they want the Experience. and the Joy.#and that makes me happy#does it baffle my principal? who frankly doesn’t get it? lol yes#it’s because I have many layers and people who are not my students (or followers on tumblr)#do not get to see the deepest layer of me caring about literature and speaking passionately on it#and when the kids do see it they want to be a part of it for as long as they can#(not all of them) (lol)#it’s funny because I can tell the principal knows that it isn’t just because I am ‘easy’ or even just ‘fun’ that there’s some other draw#but being a man of no imagination or sensitivity he sees nothing extraordinary in me by any measure#and he stays baffled!#anyway. Will this cause problems down the line for me#undoubtedly#because actually it’s not a power that is going away#and it’s not just accidental buzz. it’s baked into who I am as a teacher. and it only increases as I learn how to use my powers better#and people who are not in the class will stay not understanding#anyways. I’m allowed to say all of this because I can be honest about the fact that in a way (in a way)#this doesn’t make my job any easier#I mean it does. because there is a lot they are willing to do for me.#but the job stays frustrating and is fraught with many dangers#and because I will not run a cult of personality (despite this post) it requires so much work from me

“Moreover, in their engagement with BL audio drama, many producers and consumers articulated that they wanted to create or listen to more diverse BL stories through which the gay community could be represented more authentically. For example, when asked what kind of BL stories or characters they would like to see in future works, 14 interviewees, including both producers and consumers, expressed a desire to see more realistic works and more ordinary gay men being depicted. CV ZL stated:
'I support diversity and normalisation . . . I really like realistic works in which gay men don’t have to be pretty or brilliant or be a potent boss. I wish to see just a gay couple sitting at a breakfast store doing what we as ordinary people would do.'
This resonated with CV K’s comment that ‘I hope in the future there will be more authentic works that are more acceptable to the gay community, with more diverse images and storylines that don’t overly cater to the [female] audiences’ tastes’. A full-time female producer, YJ observed that ‘I want to see daily-life stories . . . that can make me feel there must be people like that in real life’.
The desire to see more realistic BL works demonstrated the potential of BL audio drama as a third space to link BL subculture and the larger queer community, to represent those who have been marginalised by heteronormative institutions, and to further shift the gender and sexuality discourses in China.”
-"A Transmedia ‘Third’ Space: The Counterculture of Chinese Boys’ Love Audio Dramas," by Tingting Hu, Jing Jin & Lin Liao

give me katsuki bakugou who wears his winter suit even in the summer just so he sweats more. give me katsuki bakugou who overheats easily and usually hangs out in tank tops in the winter. gice me katsuki bakugou with heat intolerance but he still pushes his limits to make enough sweat for his quirk. give me katsuki bakugou who passes out after training sometimes, or patrols, or battles, because he pushed too far, got too hot. give me katsuki bakugou who drinks water constantly. give me katsuki bakugou who carries one of those huge ass water bottles everywhere and it always somehow half empty. give katsuki bakugou dehydrated. give me katsuki bakugou but make his quirk also a disability!

I really do hope that whatever Lu Guang’s backstory winds up being that he really is just a guy who maybe happened to have had some messed-up ability-related things happen to/around him instead of him being not human or actually from the future or an actual time agent or something like that

Neil Gaiman intentionally chose tumblr to be his main social media site because it is crawling with vulnerable young women who idolized him. He invested in parasocial relationships before we even had a word for it. Even now after everything has come out I’m still seeing people say his presence on this website was a net positive. How many victims will it take? How many women need to be preyed upon by how many men before were willing to question someones intentions?
“Well they bullied John Green from the website with false allegations!” And? Seems like the only issue was they went after the (as far as I know) wrong person.
Neil Gaiman was here, DMs open, for years. There’s a very heavy current of #NotAllMen coming from people who are supposedly shocked and dismayed by the allegations. YA authors have a particularly vulnerable readership group. YA authors who wrote about trauma and abuse have an even more vulnerable group. Almost all of those authors are in fact able to write about these things, connect with fans, provide feedback and insight and appropriate support, without intentionally soliciting emotional attachment from their fans. They know what reasonable boundaries are. Neil Gaiman did not have reasonable boundaries. He had hunting grounds, potential victims, and adoring fans who he manipulated into protecting him from criticism.
