thinking about Dave (in ~0.7k words because I clearly think too much)

Thinking about the man that David York is.

Thinking about how he would drive you nuts in the office with his bossy attitude. Not only bossy, but cocky, patronizing but so subtle that it lingers in the air for just a second but it leaves you with your blood boiling. Like his aftershave.

Thinking about how he meets you in the little office kitchen and gives you a once over, not saying a word but his lips curve into something. Amusement? Condescension? Approval? Then he says “Too much creamer.” and gestures towards your coffee with a tilt of his chin. Yeah, probably no approval for your outfit.

Thinking about how he takes yours and his copies of the documents being handed out in meetings, just to place yours in front of you. Like a damn father making sure his kid doesn't mess up the easiest task.

Thinking about how he starts calling you sweetheart and how he laughs, deep and gravely, when you almost choke on your coffee with “still too much creamer, sweetheart”.

Thinking about how he always presses the buttons for you when you're on the elevator as if you're not capable of doing that. 

Thinking about how he gives you a few more once overs over the course of the next months, and those looks are definitely more on the approval side than the something side. Or maybe he just starts wearing you down.

Thinking about how you impatiently grab your set of documents from his hands in one meeting and he tuts a quiet “ah ah, I'm just being nice.” Maybe he was being nice? No. Not David York.

Thinking about how he places a cup of coffee on your desk one day, and when you look up at him with disbelief and almost shock, he laughs, deep and gravely, and mocks “You won't like it. Rarely any creamer in it. Enjoy, sweetheart.”. You liked it though, not the taste of the coffee, no, way too bitter for your liking. But the taste of his gesture, paired with the constant whiff of bossiness, dominance, that surrounds him.

Thinking about how he holds the doors open for you. 

Thinking about how the team eats lunch together and he orders for you, without asking what you wanted or liked or if you're allergic to anything. Thinking about how you want to call him an entitled prick and kick him. And how he just smirks at you from across the table when you realize that he nailed the order perfectly: no parsley but toasted sesame seeds and some extra sauce on the side. And that caramel brownie you rarely ever order but love so much. 

Thinking about you whisper a thank you for the first time when he places your copies in front of you as the meeting starts and how he cocks a brow in surprise but then smiles and whispers back a you're welcome, sweetheart.

Thinking about how the team goes out for drinks after work one night and how he orders your drink and you don't even care anymore because you know he will get it right and somehow will even make it better.

Thinking about how he walks you to your car that night and opens the driver's door for you, boxing you in for a couple of moments and the air between you two sizzles until he takes a step back.

Thinking about how he continues to press the buttons in the elevator but doesn't try to avoid brushing against you as he leans towards the shiny brass console.

Thinking about how you meet his wife and adorable girls at the big Christmas office party and are confused about the strange ache in your chest. Thinking about how proud and loving he is towards his family. About how you watch him order the drinks and food for Carol, how he comments about her putting too much sugar into her coffee, how she rolls her eyes and smiles and he smiles back at her.

Thinking about how you see the York family leaving the location and how you catch a glimpse of Dave pressing the buttons in the elevator before the doors close because Carol is holding hands with the two girls. How he looks up for a quick second and your eyes meet and the fucking air sizzles again until you extinguish the sizzling with a double shot of vodka.

Thinking about how you lay awake that night, staring at the ceiling and cursing yourself for liking Dave just a little too much. Thinking about how you see your phone screen light up with a message, saying “thinking of you, d.”

The end of October marks the official end to the province’s wildfire season, but Mother Nature does not follow a calendar.
