The thing is, Ian was right. Mickey doesn't know any better, the writers on the show made sure of that, because for them the only important thing about Mickey is his devotion to Ian. But we're a bit more realistic about it and can analyze Ian's actions without being limited by someone's poor imagination.

There’s a lot to address here, so please forgive me for the lengthy response, anon! 🙂 I’ll preface all of it by saying this: my general opinion is that if Mickey has what makes him happy, we should support that regardless of how we feel about the other party (with obvious exceptions like physical abuse, etc.). If Byron was what made him happy, I would support him even if I couldn’t stand the guy. The same goes for any other character in any other franchise, at least for me. Now, onto your points:

I’m not sure which scene you mean when you mention Ian saying he doesn’t know any better, but I’m definitely with you on our ability to analyze Ian’s actions. The problem here is that analyzing will always be colored by perspective and implicit bias. If your fave is Mickey, anything that hurts him will look a whole lot worse than what he does that hurts Ian and perhaps lead to conducting a less than thorough analysis or rejecting sensible arguments about Ian’s character. Based on the number of posts I see about how Mickey is the only good thing on the show, I’d argue that that is a very real danger in many of the takes on Ian as well as everyone else. I’ve seen some pretty heavy demonizing of characters who hurt Mickey’s feelings or aren’t actively sweet to him, which is a bit unrealistic since that’s life and Mickey certainly never seems to mind or let it keep him down for long.

As far as him not knowing better, on the whole, I don’t think that gives Mickey much credit at all. Actually, it doesn’t really give him any credit, which is sort of surprising given how vehemently people defend his IQ, academically and emotionally, against what amounted to a joke. Mickey knows that Ian messes up and does things that are questionable at best and hurtful at worst. He’s not an innocent, pure character who endures heartache after heartache to throw himself at the brick wall of earning Ian’s attention. He gives as good as he gets and has hurt Ian too. They’re human and written very realistically in that regard. Their love for one another allows them to forgive transgressions and move on, not hold grudges or “not know any better” with regards to what they deserve. Love isn’t about what we deserve, and I think it’s important to remember that a relationship won’t last if it’s based on an arbitrary numerical score of who has done more harm than the other. Things happen. Poor decisions are made. They can allow that to break them or work through it. Mickey has actively chosen to work through it because at the end of the day, he loves Ian more than he is interested in finding something else. In earlier seasons, Ian similarly chose to work through it with someone who might never be in a position to come out and begin the full relationship that he so desperately wanted. That’s beautiful to me, not contemptible.

As far as the only important thing about Mickey being his devotion to Ian, we’ll also have to agree to disagree. 🙂 In the early seasons, while Ian was certainly the catalyst for it, Mickey’s story was about coming out more than his devotion to Ian. That’s why we have the scenes where he taunted Kash (focus: keeping his secret), purposely got sent back to juvie (focus: hiding from Terry if he found out), and got married (focus: self-preservation). We do absolutely see a rising devotion for Ian during this period, of course, and there’s no argument that his character was written expressly to be Ian’s love interest. The writers still made him a well-developed one with his own motives, fears, and desires outside of Ian in a way that later love interests didn’t get. (My own belief is that they didn’t intend for the later relationships to last like they did Mickey, but regardless of the validity there, Mickey was written as a character with more depth from the very beginning and existed before anything with Ian ever happened.)

The first half of s4 shows Mickey on his own merits. He’s handling his new position as a patriarch of the family, running the business while Terry is fairly hands-off and watches. He decides to help the Russian girls and ends up going into business with Kev. We learn a lot about Mickey’s character outside of Ian during that time. In fact, there are only a couple of scenes that really focus on him missing Ian until finding him becomes Mickey’s task: asking Kev if anyone has heard from him, the bathroom scene, and the later Alibi scene. Otherwise, the early s4 writers showed us a Mickey who was compassionate, ambitious, utilitarian, entrepreneurial, and collaborative—all without tying it back to Ian. Kev and V are renowned friends of the Gallaghers, but Mickey doesn’t grow closer to Kev in an attempt to learn more about what happened to Ian. He doesn’t help the girls because he thinks Ian would want him to. In fact, with the exception of those scenes I mentioned, we have no reason to believe that Ian is on Mickey’s mind at all while he’s doing these other things. He has a life outside of Ian just like the opposite is true, and s4 went to great lengths to show us that.

The second half of s4 is, once again, about keeping his secret until he decides to come out. (Read: decides to, is not forced to. More on that in a moment.) Yes, his devotion to Ian is once again the catalyst for some of his decisions, but there’s much more to it than that. Once again, we still see scenes with Mickey operating on his own for his own purposes. He doesn’t leave home entirely because he wants to be with Ian—he also wants to escape from his wife and pretend that things are the way they used to be. He doesn’t scam money from the rich guy or take more than his cut from the register at the Alibi to protect Ian—he does it for self-preservation so that Svetlana won’t get him killed. He doesn’t go to the baptism to keep up appearances and protect Ian—he does it to keep up appearances for himself and because...well, like it or not, that’s his son. The lattermost is something Ian specifically does not want him to do, and if he does, he wants to be there. Mickey goes against his wishes because it’s about protecting himself (and perhaps, by extension, their relationship), and rightfully so. Coming out at the Alibi does once again tie to Ian as a catalyst for change in Mickey’s life, but it didn’t have to happen. Mickey could have grabbed his coat, told everyone goodnight, and left with Ian. At no time did Ian tell him that he would leave if Mickey didn’t come out to everyone or admit they’re a couple, even if he did make reference to the fact that Mickey was hiding and not free. All Ian wanted was for Mickey not to treat him like a mistress or expect him to stick around if he did. Instead, it was a logical culmination of Mickey’s written development to come out. He’s stronger and more independent than he used to be. He’s capable of taking care of himself and surviving in the world without relying on Terry. He’s in a position where yes, he’s still justifiably terrified of coming out and what it’ll mean where Terry is concerned, but he’s able to do it. Ian is a catalyst for it, but being devoted to him isn’t Mickey’s only reason.

In s5, a lot of Mickey’s story does revolve around his devotion to Ian, but not any more than Ian’s revolves around devotion to him in the second half of s3. We still see Mickey doing business and running the family, but having Ian be his more central concern makes sense because Ian is sick and the writers have already told us that his health is a ticking time bomb waiting to explode. In denial or not, Mickey knows this. And so we see his story center around Ian because, to an extent, it has to. Ian is mentally and physically sick. He’s adjusting not only to meds, but to a label that makes him feel ashamed and afraid. Mickey is devoted to him, and so Mickey does everything he can to take care of him. But here’s the thing: that scares Ian too. He’s seen what happens to the people who try to take care of Monica. He knows how it felt to try only to be ignored or betrayed or abandoned. The breakup isn’t about anger at being coddled or, by my interpretation and Ian’s own words, him being selfish. It’s about him seeing that Mickey’s devotion is going to keep him from living his life and ultimately (in his opinion) hurt him beyond repair, and so he sets Mickey free. It hurts him, yes, but it does work.

Because even though we don’t see it happen on-screen, s6 through s9 can’t possibly be Mickey sitting in a prison cell pining over Ian. If that was going to happen, we’d have seen it in s4. By this point, we know who Mickey is outside of Ian and can assume that he’s operating in much the same way on the inside until he figures out what he wants to do. We know he and Svetlana had a business arrangement where they took out contracts for work he could do in prison. We know that he makes a business acquaintanceship with Damon, which means he was probably involved in dealing or smuggling while there. Neither of these things can possibly revolve around devotion to Ian because they could conceivably keep him from Ian longer. His sentence is fifteen years, and if he’s counting on being out in eight to be with Ian, he needs to be on his best behavior. He’s not. He’s unapologetically not when he sees Ian again and talks about what Damon is. Ian looks less than comfortable with it, but that’s not why they ditch him—it’s because he might get Mickey caught with his behavior. Even breaking out happened once he was able to solidify an opportunity working for a cartel, so while Ian may have been another catalyst (besides the obvious desire to get out of prison), the decision wasn’t about devotion to him. The only decision that was about that was the one he made at the border to let Ian go without making him feel worse about it. He’s devoted to Ian, so he knows that dragging him along on the run into the unknown won’t be good for him. He needs stability and a support system and medication, none of which Mickey can provide if they cross that border together. So, out of his devotion, he lets Ian go. They have a heartfelt goodbye and separate for what they think is the last time.

Does Mickey’s devotion lead him to turning himself in? Absolutely. But not before spending another long stint living his own life. The writers make sure we know that he had a life without Ian playing a role in it, once again conducting business and operating successfully on his own merits. They’re limited in what they can show because Noel wasn’t available, which made logistics important, but they didn’t leave him high and dry or insinuate that he was waiting around in Mexico for an excuse to return to Ian. He was once again a successful businessman in the illicit economy. When he returns in s10, his storyline does then appear to revolve around devotion to Ian more—but it doesn’t. Mickey has people he hangs out with in prison separate from Ian and with no ties to him. With the Byron situation, it wasn’t about proving devotion for Ian when he thought Ian questioned it—it was about hurting Ian because of what happened at the courthouse, even after he found out what Ian was really afraid of. If the writers were only interested in showing his devotion to Ian, he would have ditched Byron the second Ian told him that he was scared of his disorder and ruining them. He doesn’t. He sticks it out because Mickey is so much more than his relationship with Ian: he’s independent, vengeful, hot-headed, impulsive, and stubborn. These are traits that have been set up by the writers throughout the series both with and without ties to their relationship, and he very adamantly adheres to his revenge-plot-turned-catalyst-for-Ian-pulling-his-head-out-of-his-ass because he isn’t all about devotion to Ian.

I completely respect your opinion on the matter and appreciate the opportunity to discuss it at length! Ultimately, it boils down to this for me: the writers get a lot off flack for some of the narrative decisions and, of course, they won’t always be to our liking. Opinions and preferences assure us of that. I don’t think it’s about us being more realistic or more capable of analyzing a character, though. Everything above was written. It wasn’t spelled out and handed to us, no, but the writers put it there so that we could then analyze it. There’s no analyzing a blank slate or someone whose only narrative is devotion to Ian. The writers have given us a wealth of things to consider when it comes to all the characters, Mickey included, and we wouldn’t be able to have this conversation if they didn’t. Mickey is intelligent, thoughtful, insightful, and more than capable of standing on his own two feet as both a fictional person and a character. If he chose Ian, then it’s because he has weighed all these things and found them to be nothing in the grand scheme of their love for one another. Again, though, we can agree to disagree. A Knight’s Oath

There isn’t one inch of my body that isn’t yelling this is wrong, not one bit that isn’t shouting at me to return, to go back to my chambers, cover my ears with both hands and ignore that letter until the signal comes from within the palace. I came here to do a job: become her close guard, infiltrate the institution, take down the royal line.

That one job could have me swimming in silver. One job would be enough to buy myself that lifestyle I can only dream about. One job, and I could leave knighthood behind, buy myself a castle, a royal title and a woo wife to go with it. A pretty young wife with dark hair and big eyes and a whole army of servants to fulfill our every wish.

And yet here I am, walking with more purpose than ever before in my life, heading towards her.

Like most upper class Hizuran structures, the Azumabito royal palace is built atop a tall stone base. It’s an intricate maze of buildings, rooms and sliding doors that I’ve spent two years memorizing. I should know, better than anyone, how hard it’ll be for us to sneak out. Even if we do it without anyone being aware, even if nobody knows what the princess has found out.

“Jean, over here.” her voice calls from behind one of the doors. I follow like a bee searching honey. I enter the place where she’s been waiting for me and encounter her wearing the peasant clothes I procured for her a couple of days ago. She’s as lovely in them as she was the first time I saw her, sitting atop a high throne next to the regent, Kiyomi Azumabito, wearing a wonderful kimono of red fabric and golden threads.

Her mother, a pure-blooded Azumabito royal, fell in love with an eldian man, and in the process of marrying him, she also fell into disgrace and was expelled from the balance years before conceiving the princess. After a wave of plague that caused the death of the shogun and his closest relatives, however, Kiyomi had sent a contingent to bring back the princess’ mother to serve as regent until the princess came of age.

Stories say Kiyomi found a ten-year-old princess orphaned, living of scraps she found in the field near her home. Her parents were also killed by the plague. Some people say they starved, some others that they were murdered. However they died, the princess came back to the ancestral home of the Azumabito alone and Kiyomi took her into her care. Even I am aware of the love the woman has for her adoptive daughter, how much she cares for her safety.

It was her the first to find out about Marley’s plans to overthrow Hizuru’s royal line, of the spies sent by Marley in the shape of knights for Hizuru’s princess. It was Kiyomi who came to me, asking for help for the princess. She knew my involvement in Marley’s plans gave me a lot more intel than any other servant could’ve collected…and because she saw the way I looked at the princess that day our delegation arrived, two days ago, and how I’ve seen her every day since. She figured out quickly how much affection I carry for the princess and knew, barely one year after my arrival, that I would never leave her adoptive daughter behind.

“Are you ready?” I ask, putting on the peasant clothes, hiding the katana Kiyomi left in my room in the folds of my own hizuran clothes. “Your highness, are you ready?”

“I don’t want to leave.” She says; she’s turned away from me, giving me what little privacy she can while I change. “I can’t leave Kiyomi. I can’t leave the people of the palace behind.”

“Many of your servants are traitors, princess,” I remind her, tapping on her shoulder to indicate I’m decent again. A slight tremble travels her back and I curse myself; I’d forgotten how reserved hizuran people are when it comes to physical touch.

She turns around and faces me, resolution clear on her face. “Traitors or not, a ruler owes herself to her people,” she says, more dignified than any other royal I ever saw in Marley. “Traitors or not, I cannot leave them alone. And Kiyomi—”

“You heard their plans, princess,” I say, wondering how many times I’ll have to repeat the same thing to get her to forget that commitment to the people the Azumabito care so much about. “The moment the clock hits twelve, the guards will be at your doors. Zeke plans on executing you at dawn, on the morning of your eighteenth birthday. It’s either that or be forced into marrying his brother.”

“And I must let Kiyomi’s head hang just for the sake of escaping?”

“Mikasa,” I say; using her name feels strange. It’s a lovely name, but also forbidden. No knight is allowed to address the princess by her name, nor try to give her orders, let alone try to convince her to follow a plan she doesn’t agree with. The princess widens her eyes in brief shock, but nods, inviting me to continue. “You’re the last of your line. Kiyomi is willing to sacrifice her life for you.”

The princess lowers her head. “I can’t leave her.”

“If you can’t respect her wishes, at least do it out of pity for me,” I say, in a last attempt to get her moving. Time is slipping away from us, and Eren’s retinue must be making its way across the mountain roads already. “I’ve given up everything by just being here. If you stay, I hang with you, dishonored, tortured first.”

The princess looks up at me, her eyes stone-cold. “You came here under false pretenses, betraying mefirst. And now you’ve betrayed your country by being here. How can I be sure you won’t betray me again?”

Ah, how can I assure her without looking like a lovesick fool?

“I’ve served your palace for two years now, haven’t I?” I say. Mikasa nods, her gaze softening somewhat. In an act of boldness, or perhaps a leap of faith, I take a hold of her hands and fall to my knees. “I’m well acquainted with you now, princess, I cannot bring myself to leave you behind or betray you even if I should wish it.”

“Why, though, Jean?” she asks, and the mention of my name from her lips wraps me up like a warm blanket. Suddenly I remember again why I don’t care about the lost wealth, about that castle and title, about the group of nameless women I could’ve wooed into marriage. It’s her. Just her.

“Because you deserve to live. A great leader deserves to live,” I reply, bringing the back of her hands to my lips. I graze them briefly; a royal courtesy from Marley, never performed hereabouts. Royalty in Hizuru barely touches each other, and I can feel her trembling at the mere touch of lips against her hand. “I mean it when I say I won’t betray you, princess. I’m devoted to you as I haven’t been devoted to anything in my life. All I can hope for is that you believe me.”

“I believe you, Jean,” she says after a moment of quiet introspection. “I’m not sure why, but your face always seemed honest. From day one, even when you were scheming against me.”

I can’t help but to smile. “I’m willing to use my whole life to convince you I’m no longer scheming.” I say, standing to face her, holding her hand still. “Are you ready, princess?”

A sad smile adorns her face as she nods, and I’m forced to not focus too much on her face as we sneak out of the castle. Apart from being well-educated, she’s been trained extensively in martial arts and acrobatics, so sliding across the various rooftops of the palace and jumping from one terrace to another proves an easy task for her. She looks back at me at a point, her pale face illuminated by the moonlight, and I manage to give her a tight, ridiculous smile in encouragement.

I’ve seen plenty of women before, but she is by far the most beautiful sight my eyes have ever witnessed. But her beauty is just one of the things that have drawn me to betray my homeland’s coup d’état against Hizuru. I met her when she was sixteen, and I nineteen; these two years, I’ve seen her grow into a fair, kind ruler, one that cares more about the wellbeing of her subjects than the wealth of the family mines or the expansion of her land.

At seventeen, she convinced the council to abolish arranged marriages for women, recognize divorces requested by wives as legal, increase taxes for royals and establish a free education system for the entire country. I know she had in mind to establish free healthcare within her fifteen-year plan. All in all, she is a great leader.

Then there’s the fact that she’s extremely good at sparring. And I’ve always had a soft spot for women that are good with swords, especially women who can beat me in a fight.

I guess, in a way, spending my days with her, being with her…it all makes me want to be better. Before Hizuru, before the princess, all I thought about was ways of getting a comfortable life. My whole childhood, I’d spent it scamming people. Then knighthood had seemed a good way to find myself a relatively wealthy wife or become rich by taking down a king, or by plundering a town.

Just being by her side makes me a better man.

I want to keep being that better man.

I also want to keep seeing that pretty face of hers. I want to keep hearing her rants. I want to keep sharing my thoughts with her. I just want to be with her.

Hizuru’s capital is surrounded by tall mountains. It’s thanks to my military training that I know which rivers the Jaeger brothers will use to invade the city, and which ones will give us safe passage to the sea, where a boat provided by the queen of Paradis Island awaits. Hizuru is a large nation, however, and the possibilities of our escape plan going sour are high. Still, I cannot let any of my insecurities show on my face. I took it upon my shoulders to protect the princess, to take her to her new home to keep her from being executed, forced into marriage, or tortured to death by the royals who had aided the Jaeger brothers conspire against the Azumabito.

By the time the sun begins to climb the mountains, we are miles away from the capital. And yet, we can hear the execution bells ring across the watch towers. Heads are starting to roll in the palace, the bells across the Hizuran Mountain Pass tell us, and one of them must be Kiyomi’s. Mikasa sits next to me on the motorboat, crying into her sleeves, leaning slightly against my arm.

“I’m sorry.” I manage to muster. “I wish I could’ve done more.”

She shakes her head, not looking at me. “Why did your people do this to us?”

I say the first few words that come into my mind. “Greed…I’ve never interacted much with the Jaeger brothers, but I know that the eldest wants power, and the mines in Hizuru are too rich to ignore. And the youngest cannot stand monarchies. He says people in them aren’t free.”

“Why decide to impose a dictatorship instead? What kind of hypocrisy is that?” she asks, although it’s clear she doesn’t expect me to answer her. “Why kill the council members? Kill Kiyomi? Our people are happy, and I wanted to work to make their lives better. I really wanted to. Why invade a foreign land that has rightful rulers with the excuse of freedom?”

“I wish I could explain it all,” I say, and the sight of the tear streaks on her face turns me into a rambling idiot. “I’m sorry, princess. I’m sorry I was with them. I’m sorry I didn’t do more to stop them. I’m sorry I came into your palace with—”

“You’ve already said you’ll spend your whole life making it up to me, won’t you? It is a promise, isn’t it?” the princess replies, and something inside me tells me she might be too tired to hear my apologies. She took the news of my original plan badly and stopped talking to me for a whole week, not being able to just look at me in the eyes, with fair reason. We spent so many days together with me as her guard, we became friends over those long nights of study, our few sneaky expeditions outside the palace, the times when I brought her street food for dinner in our chambers, the times when she’d sung for me and Kiyomi from behind a white canvas…

All those memories of friendship are stained now, covered with the mark of my initial plan to help the Jaeger brothers with their coup d’état. “I mean to fulfill that promise, princess,” I say, more convinced than I thought I would. “I’ll do anything to redeem myself from the initial betrayal.”

“What if I ask you to raise an army for me?” she asks, wiping the tears off her eyes with the back of her hand. “What if I say that you will prove you’ve redeemed yourself once you help me gain my throne back?”

Her face has acquired that solemn expression she uses whenever she addresses the council. And, like the council members, I cannot bring myself to say no to her. “I-I will try my best, princess. I do not have any influence, and I’ve no money to offer. But I will raise you an army, I will do my best.”

“Do you promise?”

“I could swear on my knight’s honor, princess, but you and I know I don’t have any. I’m a traitor to you and to my own homeland, remember?” I admit with an awkward smile, scratching the back of my head. “I’m lucky enough as it is that you trusted me enough to come with me.”

Mikasa smiles, then wraps my hand with both of hers. “There is one way you can assure me.” she says, her eyes not meeting mine. The sunlight is bathing us both; we’ll enter the lowlands soon, and speed will be of essence to avoid getting captured. Perhaps my concern for speed is what keeps me from realizing her face is dangerously near mine for the first couple of moments.

“What way?” I manage to stammer.

“An oath on your soul,” she explains. “It’s not a thing we do often here, though.”

“Is it like a blood oath?”

The princess shakes her head. “It’s something a bit deeper than that.”

I swallow hard, wondering if she’s going to force me to cut my finger off, or something worse. I don’t have any gripes if that’s what it takes to convince her I would fight to gain her trust back, but I can’t help being concerned about the health implications of cutting a finger off in the middle of a river.

“I’m not going to ask you to cut a finger off, Jean,” she half-sobs, half-laughs, guessing my thoughts. “It’s nothing as ghastly as that.”

“From the way you’re talking, it seems like a big deal.”

A soft blush travels her cheeks. “It is,” she says. “It’s a soul promise. We don’t touch each other here, not after you’ve left childhood behind. Let alone if you’re from a royal family. These oaths only happen behind closed doors, or at weddings.”

“What kind of oath is it, princess?”

“Kiss,” she says, closing her eyes. “You close the oath with a kiss, and your soul is bound to that person.”

“A k-kiss?” I manage to say, realizing at last how close she is sitting to me. If I must be honest, for the most part during my first year on the job, I paid little attention to hizuran traditions. It wasn’t until she started talking to me more that I began to care for the country I was hired to take down. And despite paying more attention to the country she loves so much, I have never heard of such an oath. Could it be that she just wants to feel someone else’s skin on hers?

A smirk appears on my face, and she seems to guess what thoughts are going through my head. She withdraws from me, narrowing her eyes dangerously. “It’s not like I want to!” she says, her cheeks burning red, her murderous expression only increasing my smile. “Stop looking at me like that!”

“I’m sorry!” I say, coughing to clear my throat. Her hands are still holding mine. “I didn’t mean to disrespect you, princess. Please, tell me about this oath.”

“No.” Mikasa replies, shaking her head. “You are clearly not mature enough for it.”

“Please, princess.” I say, and she gives me a serious glance before sighing in defeat.

“If you do it, it’ll be important. You cannot back away from this; you must fulfill it even if it takes your life. Your promise will be bound to your soul; and your soul is bound to me.” Mikasa hunches her shoulders and exhales, her eyes set on the mountains we’re leaving behind, her eyes longing for the warmth of the castle, the voice of her caretaker.

Her home crumbled in the lapse of a few hours; all her friends in the palace, her adoptive mother, the members of the council that cared for her…they’re all dead by now, or tortured, perhaps, to get information on her whereabouts. Kiyomi is probably getting the worst of all. And that’s when it hits me: I’m all she’s got left. Me, one of the knights sent to infiltrate her palace, gain their trust, and stab them in the back.

What a grim scenario that is.

“Princess, please look at me,” I say. She turns to face me, and my lips press against hers for a couple of seconds. When we part, her eyes are as wide as plates. “I promise I will not fail you.”

She nods, her hands clutching mine, her cheeks tinted pink. “Thank you.”

I let go of her hands and wrap her face with both of mine. Then, I press my lips against hers. So I finished a thing...

Last semester was very stressful, and to help relax, I started writing Destiny stuff again. This summer I’ve continued it, and I’ve been fixing up one of the stories I was working on before my Destiny hiatus. It’s a bit of an extension of headcanons and stuff I’ve RP’d, really fleshing out my Guardian, Dutch-37 and some of the people from his past. I thought I’d share the first chapter with the Destiny crowd here! Without further ado, I present to y’all...  37

Chapter I

Three Guardians huddled together in their makeshift barracks, trying to block out the sandstorm which wailed around them. The barracks was a former Cabal observation post, solid, but worn from years of battle. Holes in it were crudely patched with lashed down Phalanx shields, which unfortunately left cracks for the storm to get in. As the trio sat quietly, the shield which served as the door was opened, sand and wind flying in as a fourth Guardian stumbled in.

“Thank the Light, I thought I was going to be blown away,” said the newcomer, a Warlock wearing the bond of the Praxic Order, “I’ll tell you what though, once the storm finally breaks, we’ll be reconnected to the Vanguard network.” 

    “Thanks Felix,” said the Hunter sitting on the floor, her long scarlet cloak wrapped around herself like a blanket, the sigil of the House of Devils painted on it. “Sooner we can call in a relief force and fresh supplies, the better.” As Felix entered, he shifted one of the Cabal shields, moving it across the opening to seal the barracks. The storm finally somewhat silenced, he removed his helmet to reveal a young human guardian, with close-cut black hair and deep brown skin. A streak of white face-paint marred his otherwise smooth skin. 

    “Mind you,” he said, “That’s if the Vanguard can spare anything for a small outpost on the Martian Front with only one fireteam of Guardians.” 

    “It’ll be alright,” said a Titan, bearing the mark of Pilgrim Guard. His heavy armor had seen many firefights, as evidenced by the numerous burns, scrapes, and scars which dotted its surface. “We can hold.” 

“Of course we can,” said the last Guardian, a Warlock by his armor and bond, which was that of the Crucible. “But not all of us are so good at punching things as you are. We need more ammunition, and I wouldn’t say no to some replacement troops.” The Guardians sat for a while, talking some, but mostly catching up on rest that was long overdue. At last, the storm outside began to quiet down, and they exited their barracks, wandering about their home away from home. The base was positioned overlooking a long canyon, with a low trench dug around it. Aside from the barracks, there was one building with a communications array set up, and various crates set around the area, which had been tossed around in the Martian storm. Poe-5, the Titan, accompanied Felix back to the comms building, where they began to scan channels for the Vanguard’s encryption. Dutch-37, the other Warlock, strode over to the trench line, peering through the scope of his auto-rifle across the sand as the Hunter dropped down beside him.

“See anything Dutch?” she said, lifting her own rifle to scope in. 

“I’ve got nothing,” he replied, holstering his rifle on his back. “Hopefully the Cabal stay back for a while until we can get a hold of the Vanguard.” They both turned to see Poe tapping his helmet as Felix tinkered with something inside. 

“With those two, I wouldn’t count on it,” she said, a wry tone in her voice. Dutch chuckled. 

“Have a little faith in them Caitlin, they’ll get it eventually.” She rolled her eyes inside her helmet. Across the way, Poe straightened up excitedly. 

“Guys! I’ve got a connection!” He turned toward them, his Ghost broadcasting the relay into all of their helmets. “Vanguard Actual, this is Cliffside Outpost, how copy?” The line was somewhat clouded by static, but after a moment the Guardians heard,

“-Outpost, we copy. What’s your sitrep?” 

Poe took the lead, saying, “We’ve held off several Cabal advance groups, but we’re getting low on ammunition and supplies. Requesting a relief force and resupply, over.” They waited a moment, as silence met them from the other end. 

“Alright, we’ve got a relief force heading out in half an hour. Supplies will be arriving with them. When they get-bzzt-head back to Transmat Zone 25 for pick up. We’re cycling out another Guardian unit nearby so we’ll have-bzzt-them there to catch a ride back to the Tower.”

Felix pumped a fist excitedly as Poe replied, “Thanks Vanguard Actual, Cliffside over and out.” The Guardians all shared a cheer, glad to finally be heading home for some time. Dutch smiled, and headed for the barracks. Inside, he walked over to the cot he had set up, taking down his decorations and stowing his notebooks inside of his pack. While he had a bit more in his apartment in the City, Dutch rarely brought anything with him on deployments, except for his notebooks and a few pictures with his Fireteam. Picking up the nearest one, he looked at the photo of him and Felix wearing paper Crota heads as Poe chased them with a sword.

“You know, one of these days I’ll finally get a look inside of those notebooks of yours,” Caitlin said, making Dutch jump a mile. He threw her a slight glare, sticking the last of his belongings into the pack. Finished, he sat down on his cot, removing his helmet to reveal the dark blue alloys of his Exo skin. He had two small horns above either eye, each yellow, and a yellow splatter he had Felix paint across his face. 

“Maybe Caitlin, just maybe,” he said as she removed her helmet to reveal a human, with shoulder length red hair which was tied into a loose ponytail and an array of freckles across her nose. “What makes you so interested in them anyway?” 

“Well,” she said, beginning to pack up her own area, “you guard them pretty well. I mean remember when Felix tried to steal one and you put him in a headlock?” Felix, who had just come in, shuddered. 

“Hey I was almost free when you guys broke it up,” Caitlin and Dutch both chuckled, fully aware that the small Dawnblade was hardly a bastion of physical strength. “But seriously Dutch, what’s in there that you’d choke your best friend out over it, huh?” he asked the Exo. 

“If I told you,” Dutch said, a wry smile on his lips, “then I’d have to kill you. It’s nothing, it’s just my private journals, I write notes and personal shit I don’t need people reading.” Felix raised an eyebrow, but smiled and dropped the topic.

“Alright, but if it’s full of confessions of your love for me, we both know you’ll be disappointed,” he said, his smile broadening as he packed his things. Poe looked over at him suspiciously as Felix waggled his eyebrows. 

“What’s that supposed to mean Felix? You don’t mean to tell us that some poor Guardian has been coerced into a date with you?” Felix spun around to the burly Exo, doing a little dance as he did so while Dutch and Caitlin laughed at the two.

“No tricks, no scams, no gimmicks my friend! Just a cute Titan who saw some of my action in the Crucible last time I was at the Tower!” Poe slapped a hand against his dented helmet, shaking his head. 

“If Saint-14 could see this he would weep. Oh the tragedy, how could a Titan have betrayed us like this?” he cried out in mock anguish. Felix rolled his eyes, throwing his stuff back into a pack.  As the fireteam packed, there was a slight pinging noise outside, and the sound of clanking. “Felix, go take a look would you?” Poe asked. 

Felix, grumbling, turned and walked outside, expecting to find a loose plate bouncing in the wind. As he exited the barracks, the clanking grew louder. Growing nervous, Felix tapped his helmet and opened a communications link to the others. 

“Guys? Something is up, get out here.” He raised his rifle, scanning the base. As the others joined him, he held up a hand. They halted, raising their various weapons in a defensive position. Felix strained to listen as an echo came through the sandy base- heavy, thudding marching. “CABAL!” he shouted, raising his rifle as dozens of Phalanxes marched into view at the base of the hill. Their slug rifles barked as they opened fire on the Guardians, the enormous aliens marching up the hill toward the base. The fireteam slid into the trench they had dug, returning fire. Poe watched as Dutch’s hand cannon brought one down, even as Felix’s auto rifle pinged bullets off of another’s shield. Caitlin’s Ghost took off, quickly buzzing to the communications panel, where it activated the relay before disappearing back to her. 

“Vanguard Actual, this is Cliffside Outpost, over!” Poe shouted as he fired off another round from his pulse rifle, which slammed into the head of one of the Phalanxes. 

“Bzzt- Vanguard, go ahead -bzzt- Outpost.” 

“We have hostiles attacking the Outpost, where are the relief forces and supplies?” Dutch swore as his gun ran dry. The Stormcaller tossed out a ball of lightning which expanded into a storm, downing another Phalanx. 

“Bzzzzzzzt- nearly there -bzzzzt-” Poe swore as the connection went static. The others fired some more, chasing off the remaining Phalanxes who had no doubt retreated to get reinforcements. The reprieve only lasted a minute or two, enough time to grab the remainder of the ammo they had stored away. At the base of the hill, a column of Legionnaires marched up the hill. The haggard Guardians fired back, shifting positions to dodge the grenades and slugs lobbed their way. At last, out of ammo, Felix looked over to see a Phalanx who’d reached the trenchline send Dutch flying with its shield. 

“No!” Felix cried, rage and Light filling him as two flaming wings sprouted from his back. Leaping into the air, a blade appeared in his hands, which he flung upon the Phalanx. His allies shielded their eyes as he showered fire upon the Cabal. At last, the survivors activated their jetpacks, retreating from the burning Warlock in a hurry.  

Exhausted after the battle, Felix landed, his wings fading. Caitling caught him as he slumped down into the trench, closed his eyes, and let sleep take him. The Warlock awoke to a tapping on his foot. Looking up groggily, he saw Dutch offering him a hand. As the Exo pulled him up, he noticed some other Guardians he didn’t recognize setting down crates and establishing a perimeter. 

“Relief force made it,” Dutch said. “Poe has your pack, we’re gonna go ahead and start walking to the pick-up zone.” Felix held up a hand, blocking out the bright sun. He hadn’t been training as a Dawnblade for long, and it still exhausted him every time he summoned the sword. “If you need a minute, we can wait,” Dutch said. Felix shook his head. 

“I’m alright, just tired. Let’s get going.” The two set off, meeting up with the others at the edge of the camp. The Fireteam turned back, waving goodbye both to the outpost they had called home for six months and to the Guardians replacing them there. Turning, they walked, silently, into the Martian sands. As they walked, Caitlin stepped up next to Dutch. 

“So what’ll you do when we get back?” she asked. He shrugged. 

“I have a bit of research I need to get done in the libraries there, but honestly I’m just going to take some time to relax.” He squinted, barely making out the small pickup point off in the distance. “What about you? Any fun plans?” Caitlin chuckled. 

“There may be some plans for the four of us in the works. I just gotta get in touch with a friend first, but you guys will enjoy it,” she said. Dutch couldn’t see her face, but he was sure she had another one of her wry smiles on her face. “That is, if we can manage to peel Felix away from his Titan friend.” The two chuckled, chatting to pass the time until they arrived at the zone. There, they found three other Guardians waiting for them, a Warlock and two Titans. Felix and Dutch recognized one of them, a Warlock by the name of Palus Scrawn. 

“Palus, good to see you,” Dutch said. The other Warlock nodded to him. 

“Felix, Dutch, it is good to see you. How was your deployment?” Dutch and Felix both shrugged in sync. Palus nodded, chuckling. “It was quite the same for me. My research all but ground to a halt here due to the constant stream of Cabal; I look forward to returning to the City, where I can pick up where I left off.” As Dutch opened his mouth to respond, a large gunship came into view, hovering above the assembled Guardians. Wordlessly, they transmatted aboard the ship, which sped off toward Earth. As they flew, the other fireteam all fell asleep, lolling to the sides in their harnesses. Dutch, eager for rest, and Felix, still exhausted from his use of Daybreak, also quickly fell asleep, leaving Poe and Caitlin as the only conscious members of the ship. Poe leaned in to Caitlin, keeping an eye on Palus. 

“Who is that Warlock who spoke with Dutch and Felix?” he whispered to her. She shuddered, a shadow passing over her face.

“He’s eerie. I first met him through Dutch, but my friend had gone on a mission with him. He’s one of those Thanatonauts, the Warlocks that die over and over to try and find new knowledge. I think it’s messed him up a bit. Apparently his Ghost is also somewhat odd, or at least, that’s what my friend told me.” Poe shuddered. He had died several times since his rebirth, but the idea of doing so on purpose spooked him. 

“Warlocks are so odd,” he said, turning his eyes to their sleeping companions. “Caitlin, do you know what those two research?” She shook her head. 

“Not specifically. I know that Dutch has been doing something with the Hive, while Felix works with studies of the Light. Other than that, I don’t really know.” Poe shuddered. 

“Dutch’s research worries me, whatever it is. There was this time on Luna-” He suddenly stopped, choosing to fake a yawn instead. “Ah, it’s not important.” 

She frowned as Poe fell silent, nodding as he sat back to rest. Why didn’t she know more about what her friends were researching? After all, she didn’t want either of them to wind up like Osiris, or worse, Toland. Looking up she saw that Palus had woken up and was staring at her. Without his helmet, she saw an Awoken who was missing one eye. He smiled at her, leaving Caitlin with a sense of unease which she couldn’t shake until the City came into view.
