Inside the Taftsville Covered Bridge in Woodstock, #Vermont. According to the marker beside it, it is a rare example of an early #vernacular wooden covered truss bridge. The builder was a local resident named Solomon Emmons III and he used no existing patented truss bridge designs. It was built in 1836 and is the third oldest covered bridge in Vermont. It is the second longest covered #bridge in Vermont, at approximately 189 feet at the roadway. On August 23, 2011, Tropical Storm Irene devastated the south abutment, closing the bridge for two years while repair and restoration efforts were made. So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, goodnight. I hate to go and leave this pretty sight. Last weekend when we were in Stowe, we popped up to the Trapp Family Lodge. Can you believe I’d only ever been to the Bierhall? So glad @traceasaurusrex brought us up here because WOW the lodge is absolutely stunning. Fun fact: the Von Trapp’s (of Sound of Music fame) settled in Stowe, Vermont when they came over to America! They opened the Trapp Family Lodge in 1950, just a few years after they had moved to Vermont! In addition to the lodge, they now have a Bierhall, gardens, a Farm Store, Cafe, walking trails and more! The Quechee Covered Bridge in Quechee, #Vermont. Originally, this was a 1930's steel stringer #bridge with a faux wooden cover added in 1970. In 2011, the bridge was heavily damaged by Tropical Storm Irene and rebuilt in 2012. The bridge has two lanes and a pedestrian sidewalk.
