I've been around Jakarta quite a bit, but I had no idea there was an actual street in Senayan named "Jalan Jakarta". I guess there's always something to learn about this city every time I come.

How George came to the sanctuary
George is a thresher shark mer that likes exploring, he moves as the water warms or cools and has been nearly everywhere. He's cautious around humans as he's had unpleasant experiences before and generally is not a big fan of them, on one of his journeys to the in the Indian ocean going towards the Philippines he's caught up in a net full of other sharks, mers and non mers alike, the net is hauled onto a wooden vessel before it is cut and George is spilled out onto the deck
Tw for blood and generally traumatic stuff
He can hear the screams of his fellow mers and their fins are mercilessly hacked off before they're thrown back overboard to fend for themselves. George scrambles to the edge of the boat before he is grabbed and pinned down with a knee in his spine, he feels the burning pain as the fisherman digs his blade through the cartilage of his dorsal fin, he screams and cries but no one hears him.
He takes a moment of distraction to bite at the fisherman's other knee, knocking him off balance and allowing George to escape of the edge. He struggles for a moment, unable to stabilise himself as he sinks to the ocean floor and resigns to pulling himself along corals and rocks to flee the iron tainted water. At this point hes basically a walking (crawling??) dinner bell for other sharks though mers express their sympathy and leave him be so he's also covered in bites.
He washes up on a beach in Indonesia a week later, half dead and battling a raging infection. A surfer calls it in to the police who then inform the rescue who have a clinic stationed in Jakarta, George is air lifted to said clinic with a marine veterinarian and human doctor to stabilise him on the flight over.
After this experience he becomes terrified of any human after so he's constantly half sedated for his, and the workers safety and hides in the rocks and corals of his temp enclosure while his journey to florida, where the main conservation aquarium is, for a permanent stay is arranged.
tw for fairly serious medical talk
Once George was safely in the Jakarta clinic he is stitched and bandaged while being given pain relief and antibiotics through an iv placed where he can't reach and pull it out.
He's far too scared and weak to eat so he has a tube placed through his nose into his stomach. He's tried pulling it out a few times but leaves it alone bc he knows its just going to get put back in.
He actually ends up weaving a small blanket out of the kelp in his tank to cover his back and self soothe because he ends up insecure about the discolouration from the infection and scar tissue.

I'd say it totally worth my time. Kalo ga PhD mungkin sekarang aku jadi middle management di suatu perusahaan, punya rumah kecil di pinggiran jakarta, pake sepatu Tory Burch dan tas coach plus mobil decentlah (ini melihat karir teman-teman seangkatan yang awal karirnya juga MT ya wk no shade at allll).
PhD bikin aku sadar betapa aku suka sekali fleksibilitas, kerja di korporat yang pake absen sidik jari tuh aku tersiksa banget, padahal perkara sepele ya. And I LOVE doing research. Love having flexibility to spend my time any way I want. BUT it is a lonely journey with lots of aspect you can't control. Kerja di korporat tuh banyak yang udah ada SOPnya, jelas kejarannya dan day to day activitynya udah defined. Research, at least in astronomy, is abstract. No one knows the definite answer so you have to really explore everything and the answer might not what you expected. 1 year project might turn into 3, 5 or even 10. Dan PhD tuh bikin kamu expert di suatu bidang yang niche banget yang di dunia ini yang ngerti banget bidang itu tuh bisa diitung jari, which again is very isolating because very little people can relate or help you.
How is life after PhD? Ga bohong menyelesaikan PhD change me a lottt. I became confidence that I got skills and can navigate my future career. Jelas ada safety cushion. Banyak opportunity yang sebelumnya ga kebayang jadi kebuka, kerja di luar negeri pun jadi relatif lebih mudah.
Doing postdoc is like doing another PhD but with 5x responsibilities. Helping students, helping PI, building your own research projects. Still very flexible, but still lonely. Benefit ok but not the best. Necessary to build more independent research skill and network if you want to stay in academia, or if you still care about the subject and it is still fun. Otherwise, not worth it. Sekarang lagi galau sih jujur mau stay di academia atau out, I still care about the subject and still want to be a professor though. Meskipun move ke industri financial benefitnya lebih banyak tapi trade offnya adalah ya gabisa riset sesuka kamu. Hmm.

Coffee Talk Creator’s Newest Visual Novel ‘Afterlove EP’ to Launch Later This Year; Free Limited Time Demo Available Now
From Noisy Pixel
Fellow Traveller announced they will publish the Pikselnesia-developed visual novel adventure Afterlove EP on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam later this year. A limited-time demo of the game is available now on Steam until May 13. Afterlove EP is the vision of Mohammad Fahmi, the creator of the beloved Coffee Talk series, whose passing in 2022 led the Pikselnesia team to continue his legacy and bring his dream to life.
Afterlove EP is a narrative-driven game set against the vibrant backdrop of modern-day Jakarta, focusing on a young musician named Rama grappling with the sudden loss of his girlfriend, Cinta. As he navigates his grief, Rama is compelled by Cinta’s voice in his head to complete his debut EP and explore the possibilities of moving forward and finding new love. This slice-of-life adventure combines elements of dating sims, rhythm games, and narrative storytelling to offer players a deeply personal glimpse into the challenges of overcoming personal loss while engaging with the rich cultural setting of Indonesia.
The game vividly portrays the city of Jakarta through manga-inspired artwork by the acclaimed Indonesian artist Soyatu, featuring detailed character designs and recognizable local landmarks. Players can immerse themselves in the social dynamics of Rama’s world, making choices that influence the story’s direction and outcome. Accompanying the visual and narrative experience is an emotive soundtrack provided by indie band L’alphalpha, featuring songs in Indonesian that underscore the game’s emotional depth.

Redefining Myself: Navigating Identity, Rejection, and New Beginnings
Recently, I took a leap of faith—leaving my job and relocating to a new country. It's been a journey filled with excitement, challenges, and profound self-discovery. The most significant challenge has been redefining my identity now that it is no longer tied to my career. For so long, my job was not just what I did; it was who I was. Now, I am learning to see myself in a new light, beyond the titles and professional achievements.
Letting go of my job in ASEAN, which I loved, felt like losing a significant part of myself. I had not realised how much I equated my profession with my identity. Without that defining role, I have found myself grappling with questions about who I am and where my true value lies. It's been both unsettling and liberating to confront these thoughts head-on.
I have been actively looking for work here, but it has not been easy. The job market is different, and the cultural and professional landscapes are unfamiliar. I remember after one interview that I thought went okay—I knew I could have done more, but it was not terrible—I received a polite yet generic rejection email. It hit me harder than I expected.
I spent the day feeling numb, questioning my abilities, and wondering if I'd made a mistake moving here. For a few days, I let myself be buried in my depression. It was a heaviness I'd never felt before, especially since finding a job in Indonesia had been easier. The rejections here have been tough to handle, each one chipping away at my confidence.
During this difficult time, my family, friends, and my loving husband became my anchors. They comforted me for hours or simply took me to coffee shops because it always made my day. It did not erase the disappointment, but it reminded me that I am not alone.
I have also started exploring parts of the city that captivated me—the parks, the bustling streets, the quiet corners. Back in Jakarta, pollution and a hectic work schedule kept me from enjoying outdoor spaces. Now, I have the time to walk more, take public transportation, and lose myself in books while sitting in parks. These simple pleasures are helping me rediscover the joys that I had put aside and are teaching me that there is more to life than professional success.
Letting go of my previous job and the identity it provided has not been easy, especially with the added weight of job search difficulties. But each new experience—whether it is a conversation with a new friend, a walk through a park, or quality time with loved ones—helps me move forward. I am learning to find fulfillment in the present moment and in activities that nurture my well-being.
I am also trying to be kinder to myself, recognising that it is okay to feel vulnerable. This process is teaching me patience and self-compassion. I am beginning to see this transition not just as an end but as a beginning filled with possibilities.
These experiences have made me reflect deeply on how much we tie our self-worth to our careers and external validation. Society often equates success with professional achievement, but what happens when that validation is not there? I am challenging this narrative by exploring self-worth that is not dependent on job titles or others' approval.
Facing rejection has been tough, but it is also forcing me to reassess what truly matters to me. I am starting to appreciate that my value is not determined by a job offer or a title—it is inherent and multifaceted.
This journey is ongoing, and while I do not have all the answers, I am embracing the process of redefining who I am and staying positive about all the possibilities. If you have ever faced rejection or felt lost without the anchor of a career, know that you are not alone. We can redefine success and self-worth on our own terms, embracing all aspects of our journey—the highs and the lows.

Sari Pacific Jakarta - We spent two nights at this hotel but unfortunately I only got the chance to swim once in the pool. I liked the small waterfall in the corner but it was pretty clear that this pool hasn't been renovated while the rest of the hotel has. Overall a good hotel pool though.

OVERVIEW
Her father was a rags-to-riches story, who started as a boots-on-the-ground terraformer who rose up the ranks to become the President and CEO of the ASPECT company. Its name is an acronym for AeroSPace, Exploration, Colonization, and Terraforming. ASPECT made significant contributions to Mars colonization, habitation, and terraformation. Her mother became the CFO of REDROCK and was from a family with deep roots in global business which naturally evolved and scaled up to the interplanetary stage. When they met, she was charmed by the silver fox and it didn’t take long for them to embark on a journey to become a family. Aramonta had a warm upbringing and had never been without her parents’ love. She was free to find her direction and experience things independently, but her parents’ busy careers often left her without their gentle guidance. Maybe that was why things sometimes slipped through the cracks of their attention and they missed the initial signs of her illness. She was three when she wished she could tell her nanny that breathing made everything feel like knives stabbing inside of her whole body, but she couldn’t find the words through her screams or sobs. She thought that the pain would never stop, but just as the nanny was ready to call her parents, it did. While she caught her breath, she realized that her nanny was screaming in her stead, and for the first time, her eyes took on their reddish sheen. When her parents came home, they removed the hysterical caretaker and did their best to find a suitable replacement but each one afterwards suffered the same fate. This strange recurring situation wasn’t problematic for the Wei family. Instead, it was a complicated inconvenience. Through a series of secretive tests, Aramonta’s parents learned of her SIGHIR nature and recognized her need for stand-ins. They readily, and at one point, desperately, found staff members appropriate for her condition to buy more time. Still, this solution was nothing close to a permanent cure and not without lasting repercussions. Pain was an excellent teacher but Aramonta couldn't remember the last time she took a lesson from pain in the form of a first-hand experience. While her body tore itself apart, she largely lived her life painlessly by callously utilizing others to move toward the extremes and redefine expectations. Her parents, unable to part with their cherished daughter, did little to limit her. As part of her masquerade, she continued the family legacy and became an emerging leader in finance. Aramonta was quickly named the poster child for bridging the wealth gap and creating accessible avenues for financial well-being. Optically, she was a young and fit thirty-something uniquely positioned to change systems and influence industries toward equitable solutions. However, reality as she understood it was fundamentally unjust, and despite its imperfection, as her parents put it, it was still worth saving. Resources were limited and the systems to procure them were fragile, so her real purpose was to maintain the systems to ensure society's existence while selling market manipulation in a pretty box as inequity reduction. Raised by the belief that she could do anything, she met her family’s greatest expectations and exceeded them. She was already wearing shoes thought to never be filled by her so all that was next was to carry worlds on her shoulders. Between the tasks of caring for society and her race against time, the latter terrified her. After all, who could replace her?
FUN FACTS
The Spear Pillar refers to a spear in Shinto mythology, that was used to create a bridge between heaven and earth.
Dumdum the goldfish is an oranda goldfish with a multi-coloured cap that makes it look dog-like. She received Dumdum from her mother. Alastair the koi fish was given to her by her father. Every birthday, all she asks from her parents is for a fish. She has fish on Earth, in space, on ships, and on Mars.
She has a Filipino nanny turned personal chef named Magdalena Santos, or Maggie for short. Monty respectfully calls her Nanay Maggie, with Nanay meaning "mother" in Tagalog, her nanny's native tongue. She has managed to survive Monty's sighir.
She also has a butler named Walter. He typically handles the less-than-savoury tasks that would leave Nanay Maggie sick.

World Coconut Day
Discover the tropical taste and versatility of this round, hairy fruit with a hard shell. From coconut water to oil, there's so much to love about them!
A popular fruit consumed around the world, the coconut is healthy and tasty, and it grows in tropical regions. World Coconut Day celebrates everything that has to do with this delicious and nutritious fruit!
History of World Coconut Day
Coconuts are a food that humans have found sustenance in for at least 2,000 years. Probably native to Indonesia, the name coconut translates to “walnut from India”. While coconuts would have traveled throughout the Indian subcontinent and even to Africa in the early years, they didn’t make it to Europe until some time around the 16th century.
It is likely that coconuts were introduced to Europeans through the Maritime Silk Road, which connected the East with the West. Marco Polo may have been one of the many travelers and explorers who would have brought coconuts back with them.
When the Asia Pacific Coconut Community (APCC) was founded in 1969, it was created in an attempt to help support and promote the tropical countries that are high in growing, producing, selling and exporting coconuts. Located in Jakarta, Indonesia, this group stays connected with the production and export of coconuts. Sharing scientific expertise and coordinating activities within the industry, the members of the APCC are responsible for the growth of more than 90% of the coconuts produced and sold all over the globe.
Founded in 2009, World Coconut Day was started by the Asia and Pacific Coconut Community to promote the activities of coconut growers while raising awareness about the fruit for those outside of the growing community.
The celebration of World Coconut Day offers plenty of opportunities for this important product of the Asia-Pacific region to enter into the forefront of conversation of people around the world!
World Coconut Day Timeline
1st Century BC

Historical records from Sri Lanka show that coconuts existed before this time.
16th Century

Arriving as many exotic foods did, through the Maritime Silk Road, Europeans were exposed to coconuts through traders like Marco Polo.
1946
Almond Joy candy bar hits the scene
This candy bar combines the sweetness of shredded coconut with an almond and then covers it in delicious milk chocolate.
2004
Vita Coco introduces coconut water
Offering a delicious and nutritious beverage, Vita Coco begins a trend of bottling coconut water and making it commercially available.
2009
World Coconut Day is first celebrated
Started by the Asia-Pacific Coconut Community, World Coconut Day aims to raise awareness and bring harmony to the growth and distribution of coconuts.
How to Celebrate World Coconut Day
Getting involved with World Coconut Day is easy – all it takes is tasting and enjoying this delicious fruit. Consider some of these ideas to celebrate the day:
Enjoy Eating a Coconut
Some people who haven’t grown up around this delicious fruit might be intimidated by its brown, hairy shell. But once it is broken into and the creamy white flesh is exposed, it is a fragrant delight to behold.
First, start by poking a hole in the coconut at the end near the ‘eye’, where the shell is the thinnest. Use a screwdriver or hammer with a clean nail to make the hole. This will allow for the water of the coconut to be drained.
Pro Tip: Strain the coconut water through a cheesecloth and into a cup, and then drink it up!
Once the juice has been drained out of the coconut, one of the easiest ways to break open the fruit is by using a handsaw to cut it in half. Other people might want to simply put it into a sturdy bag and bang it against a stone or concrete until it breaks. This method is a bit messy, but it works.
Once the coconut is open, remove the meat from the shell and enjoy eating it fresh!
Cook or Bake with Coconut
One way to enjoy National Coconut Day without having to go to the trouble of cracking open the fruit is by purchasing the coconut in bags that are shredded or chipped. These are often pre-sweetened and ready to be used in recipes. Since the fruit is a tropical one, and the day falls at the end of the summer, many recipes are cool and refreshing.
Consider cooking or baking with some of these recipe ideas to celebrate the day:
Coconut Cream Pie. This classic pie contains coconut flakes or chips, coconut milk, heavy cream and eggs, and is topped with mounds of sweet whipped cream.
Coconut Ice Cream. This refreshing dessert is so simple, all it needs is 6 ingredients: whipping cream, sugar, vanilla, milk, salt and, of course, shredded coconut.
Coconut Milk Pudding. This delicious recipe is similar to the consistency of flan, but is made with coconut milk, gelatin, mango, butter, grated coconut, condensed milk and other simple ingredients.
Coconut Rice Pudding. A special blend of coconut milk and rice, this dessert is delicious when served with a homemade rhubarb compote or jam. The coconut and rhubarb flavors just meld together on the tongue!
Drink a Piña Colada
A classic tropical drink, the piña colada contains delicious ingredients like pineapple juice, coconut cream, rum, lime juice and ice, all blended together into a delicious frozen beverage. Throw the ingredients in a blender at home and mix it up. Garnish with a drink umbrella and skewer with red cherries for a vibrant presentation.
Try Out Some Coconut Water
A fairly new product on the market, bottled coconut water can be found in many places around the world now. Coconut water is actually the juice or liquid that comes from young coconut plants. Some brands of coconut water that might be worth trying out in celebration of National Coconut Day include Vita Coco, ZICO, Naked Coconut Water, and C2O.
Listen to Some Coconut Themed Music
One fun way to enjoy National Coconut Day is to enjoy a few songs that were written around the theme of coconuts. Try out some of these ideas to get started making a tropical playlist just for this day:
Coconut by Harry Nillson (1971). Probably the most famous song about coconuts, the lyrics are “put de lime in de coconut and drink ‘em both togedder”.
Cocoanut Woman by Harry Belafonte (1957). Released on his album called “Belafante sings of the Caribbean”, this song is about a lady on the island who is selling coconut water.
Coconut Telegraph by Jimmy Buffet (1981). Appearing as the title song on the album of the same name, this song speaks of a Tuesday on the island when information and gossip is exchanged.
I’ve Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts by Merv Griffin (1950). With lyrics that make a story out of a coconut toss at a fair, this song is a silly and playful classic from a bygone era.
