Imagine you have a really nice house. You've lived in it for centuries, because you're a minor deity and you can do that. Then the previous owner's angry sister wrecks it.
You keep on keeping on. You miss the old house, but whatever. You fall on hard times. You can't afford to keep up with the rising cost of living. You've gotta move.
A weird white woman comes by and tells you that she actually saved the old house before it got fucked up and moved it to her neighbourhood, and she's actually willing to let you move back in! It'll have to be a one way trip though.
It's a lot of work, but you make it to the new old house. It's beautiful, it's everything you remember.
You start moving your stuff in and discover that there's a bunch of squatters running a fascist state for birds out of the living room. There are two separate hostels for people who got expelled from engineering school for safety violations in the basement, and they hate each other. There's a bunch of old ladies raising orphans in the kitchen and they won't let anyone else even step foot in it. The previous owner never actually left, she's been locked in her room hotboxing for the past several centuries. The study has been converted into a casino. There's a bunch of broken mirrors and black cats and upside-down horseshoes piled in a corner for some reason. A Minecraft streamer is living in the walls.
... At least the girls who've been living in the garden shed are nice.
Your wife goes in to evict the squatters. You decide to go find somewhere to sleep, you can't be assed to deal with any of this shit. But first, the both of you send your daughter to go introduce herself to the neighbours. Maybe it'll be worth it if she can at least make some friends.
An hour later she comes back and tells you that she couldn't work up the courage to ask out the leader of the neighbourhood watch, so she started throwing rocks instead, and now they're coming to kick your collective asses.
Your wife lets you know she's come to a mutually-beneficial agreement with the fascist birds and is planning to have one of the engineer factions rewire the house's electricity and she thinks she might be able to get a cut of the profit from the casino.
The neighbourhood watch beats everyone in the house half to death, except you.
The next day they realise they forgot you and come back to beat your ass too.
This is more or less what Mountain of Faith was for Suwako.

Interview with Jonathan Bailey and Matt Bomer from GQ Hype
Tumblr media
Filled with cozy, Hemingwayesque signifiers of midcentury masculinity (think: taxidermy and artfully-tattered boxing gloves), the restaurant seemed perfect for a breezy, late-autumn hang in the West Village.
But there’s one problem: Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey have burgers on their minds. And while this place boasts a surplus of dead animals nailed to the wall, it somehow only serves snacks and salads in the afternoon. And as Bomer points out, Corner Bistro—a pub that, in his opinion, serves some of the best burgers in town—is just a six-minute walk away.
The British-born Bailey—who, in his black sweater, floppy beanie and overstuffed backpack, looks more like a backpacker who just rolled out of his hostel rather than one of the streaming era’s top heartthrobs—waxes rhapsodic about In-N-Out, the California burger institution, which he recently tried for the first time.
He asks the suave, Old Hollywood-handsome Bomer, who spends most of his time in L.A. with his husband and three teenage sons, where In-N-Out falls on his personal burger index. “Our boys are really good judges of burgers,” Bomer says, and for them, In-N-Out is up there—but so is the burger at Corner Bistro. And how can we send Bailey—the Viscount of Bridgerton himself—back to London without tasting New York’s best?
Our location, midway between Stonewall Inn and Julius, two of New York’s most historic gay bars, is apt. The project we’re here to talk about—the epic new Showtime series Fellow Travelers, in which the pair star—tips its hat to the legendary 1969 riots that happened in Stonewall, but goes even further, telling the story of gay liberation in the second half of the twentieth century.
Part epic love story, part political thriller, Fellow Travelers begins in 1950s Washington, D.C., with an illicit affair between the strapping Hawkins “Hawk” Fuller (Bomer), a State Department official savvy to the ways of power, and the earnest, energetic Timothy “Tim” Laughlin (Bailey), the kind of wide-eyed idealist who goes to D.C. wanting to change the world. When they first meet, Tim is a conservative Catholic boy; his passionate, intensely erotic affair with Hawk both liberates him and throws him off his path.
Through the decades-spanning run of their relationship, the series takes us from the Lavender Scare of the 1950s—when a McCarthy-era policy that institutionalized homophobia expelled many “sexual deviants” from government, resulting at one point in a suicide a day—to the AIDS crisis of the 1980s.
The series is based on the Thomas Mallon novel of the same name. But where Mallon’s book generally focuses on the 1950s and the explosive romance between Hawk and Tim, the series expands the Fellow Travelers universe to reach through the decades and cover the Vietnam War protests of the '60s and the White Night riots of 1979.
“It's been taught that LGBTQIA+ history begins at Stonewall,” says Jelani Alladin, the actor who plays queer Black journalist Marcus Hooks in the series. “It’s a kind of false narrative. Queer people have been around taking a stand for themselves since the beginning of time.”
It feels like a disservice to call a series so sexy and so compelling as educational. But Fellow Travelers does serve as an important history lesson for younger generations who may not fully understand the battles fought before their time. “It was a really dark period in American history that obviously we're not taught in school,” says executive producer Robbie Rogers, who prior to his work in film and TV was the soccer player who became the first openly gay man to compete in a North American professional sports league. “We're not taught LGBT history.”
When the first episode of the series came out in late October, a viral clip showcasing Bailey and Bomer in a particularly kinky sex scene had Gay Twitter shuddering with excitement. In the scene, Bailey’s Tim uses his power as a sub to persuade Bomer’s Hawk to take him to an important D.C. party. “I’m your boy, right?” he tells Hawk. “Your boy wants to go to the party.” In surely one of this year’s hottest scenes on film or TV, we see Bailey hungrily suck on Bomer’s toes and gamely attempt to put his foot in his mouth. Earlier in the series, Hawk gives Tim the name “Skippy” after thoroughly dominating him in bed, a gesture of affection as much as of ownership.
Sex is a powerful, world-shifting force in Fellow Travelers, but it’s also a Trojan horse. While the early episodes bristle with erotic energy, every exchange between Bomer and Bailey is about power as much as it is about sex. And the further you go into Travelers, the more you realize what’s really at stake when these two hit the sack.
“Even in the ‘50s, they had joy,” Travelers creator and writer Ron Nyswaner, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of Philadelphia, says. “You might be struggling, but that doesn't mean every moment of your life you're a victim of oppression. Behind closed doors they had a life—it's just that at any moment, the police could come through those doors and ruin that life.”
That unapologetic approach to queer desire is still pretty revolutionary in a big-budget prestige series on a major network. Gone are the days when gay characters were allowed to exist onscreen as long as they adhered to respectability politics. In Fellow Travelers, the queer characters are allowed passionate, unapologetically freaky pleasures.
“There's no shame attached to that,” Bailey says. “And I do think Matt's character detonates something in Tim. It's a gift to meet someone [who does the] radical act of helping you feel less shame and understand that intimacy that can be explored in so many different ways.”
Religion is a big theme in Fellow Travelers. Hawk is bound by covenant to his wife; Tim struggles with Catholic guilt. And like many queer people, Bomer and Bailey themselves have both had to negotiate religion within their queer identities.
“It took me a long time to dismantle it and to question what I was being told,” Bailey says. “Religion is interesting because it’s the voice of the shame but also [a source of] relief. There was this person that I could speak to—and I definitely did have that full conversation with a higher power. But the contradiction is brutal. To really lean into that as a gay kid who's not born into a gay family, you see both sides of what religion can provide, which is scathing judgmentas I felt it looking back—but also a real space for catharsis and nourishment.”
Bomer says he has an individualized approach to religion: “It's something that I've found for myself over years and years of exploration. It's just highly personal that way.” Bomer is proud to have raised his kids in a truly intersectional environment. “They go to an Episcopal school, but they're in school with Muslim kids, with Jewish kids,” he says. “We gave them that experience and then let them find their own way from there.”
On the way to Corner Bistro, Bomer gives Bailey a capsule tour of gay West Village. “That’s an iconic lesbian bar,” he says, pointing out Cubbyhole on West 12th street. Later, he asks if we’ve ever been to Fire Island. “You can have any experience you want there,” Bomer tells me, when I confess my anxiety around Speedos. “It's not just one thing.”
These streets bring up certain memories for Bomer. He tells us about coming up as an actor in New York in the early 2000s, at one point living in “a renovated crackhouse in Brooklyn.” Later, he worked two jobs to afford a one-bedroom apartment he split with a fellow aspiring actor—none other than Lee Pace, the famous, and famously tall (6′ 5″, if you don’t know), actor and Internet Boyfriend who Bomer has known since high school. “I’ll tell you how long I've known Lee Pace,” he says. “I’ve known him since he was shorter than me, when he was 14 and I was 15.”
As gay men are wont to do, trust that the group veered off-topic to talk about vocally-prodigious divas. Bomer has just seen the Broadway production of David Byrne’s Here Lies Love, which tells the story of the rise and fall of Imelda Marcos, the wife of the Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos. And when he finds out that I grew up in the Philippines, he tells me how much he loves Lea Salonga, the Tony-winning Filipino Broadway star who appears in the production.
We ask Bailey if he’s familiar with her. “Do I know Lea Salonga?” he asks. “She was Fantine!” he retorts, referring to her role in Les Misérables in Concert: The 25th Anniversary.
From there, we fall into a Filipino diva rabbit hole, talking about former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger (currently appearing in a well-received West End production of Sunset Boulevard that Bomer tells Bailey they must catch together), Mutya Buena of the Sugababes (an iconic U.K. girl group that Bailey and I separately saw live recently), and Darren Criss (who Bomer directed on The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story—technically a straight male, but one who earns diva status for his formidable vocals and the dance he did in a red speedo on Versace).
As we near the pub, a thirty-something woman walking hand in hand with her man does a hilariously convincing impression of the Distracted Boyfriend meme at the sight of Neal Caffrey and Anthony Bridgerton casually strolling through West 4th Street.
“Her neck!” Bailey says, audibly concerned.
In Corner Bistro, with sandwiches and coffees in hand (Bailey decides on a classic burger and a grilled chicken sandwich), we settle down in a cozy booth and talk about the points in their careers where Fellow Travelers found the actors, the hard-won representation Hollywood’s queer community has been fighting for for decades, and the LGBTQ+ talents of color they’d like to support on their own projects.
Bomer, of course, has been famous since the early 2010s, when he became a star on the series White Collar, and along with Neil Patrick Harris, proved that openly gay actors could become leading men. Since then, he’s conquered Broadway (The Boys in the Band), won a slew of awards (Golden Globe and Critic's Choice trophies for The Normal Heart) and become a producer and director.
In the past, Bomer has discussed the way doors closed on him even as he was being celebrated for being an out gay actor. When asked about that now, he says, “I choose just to never look back in anger about anything. Ultimately, my career is a lot richer because I decided to be open with who I am.”
“It’s a wave of progress that Matt's been surfing and is at the front of,” says Bailey. “And it's been a real honor to be able to get on my boogie board next to him.”
Before he became a global star mid-pandemic playing the grumpy, furry-chested Anthony Bridgerton on the Netflix juggernaut Bridgerton, Bailey was an award-winning actor in both the West End and British television. Huge fame didn’t find Bailey until his early 30s, so when it did, he had a clear idea of what he wanted to accomplish with his platform.
“I feel the responsibility immeasurably,” Bailey says. “I get it when people are saying you create a chair and bring people [to the table].” He talks about the connection between the civil rights movement and the queer liberation. “The Black queens are the ones who really started to fight,” he says. “It's amazing to feel politically activated. And if there's any project to do that, it's going to be Fellow Travelers. It will change the way I see myself in and the world I live in.”
The intersectionality makes the story Travelers is trying to tell even richer—most of all in Alladin’s scene-stealing portrayal of the conflicted Marcus Hooks, a pioneering Black journalist who pushes against segregation as he grapples with his own sexuality. “When I look at older men today, I'm like, You guys have endured so much,” Aladdin says. “From the Second World War all the way through to the AIDS crisis, it was nonstop life crisis after life crisis. To have been able to survive through all that, there needs to be a real, solid weight on the feet of [these characters].”
Part of the pleasure of watching Fellow Travelers is picking up on the cinematic references hidden in each scene. Hawk and Tim’s first interactions evoke the forbidden affair in David Lean’s 1945 classic Brief Encounter. When Hawk’s family settles in suburbia, the show evokes the Technicolor repression of the great Douglas Sirk melodramas. When Hawk and Tim run through the beaches of Fire Island in the ‘70s, that iconic image of Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr kissing on the beach in From Here to Eternity may flicker in your mind. And in some ways, the series plays like a gayer, hornier The Way We Were—an epic love story tossed on the tides of political change. (In this version, of course, the Barbra Streisand character is an eager foot-licking sub and Redford’s Hubbell Gardiner is a daddy with a pit fetish.) Fellow Travelers allows us to imagine an alternate timeline where queer love has always gotten as much screen time as cinema’s great heterosexual romances, giving other kinds of stories the chance at celluloid immortality too.
In the book, Hawk is described as being more handsome than Gregory Peck. But seeing Bomer in period-appropriate clothing, the Old Hollywood leading man I thought of was Montgomery Clift, the talented and ultimately tragic gay actor who starred in classics like Red River and A Place in the Sun. For a time in the mid 2010s, Bomer was attached to star in a Montgomery Clift biopic for HBO, to be directed by the great gay director Ira Sachs. “Ira is a genius,” Bomer says. “[But] I think that ship may have sailed.”
Still, when I press him about doing it in the future, he lights up. “You know, I’m [now] the same age Monty was when he passed away,” Bomer says. “I always thought it'd be really interesting to do a play about the last night of his life, when he's watching one of his old movies on TV. And he had this man who lived with him and took care of him for the last chapter of his life. There's an interesting play in there somewhere…. Maybe Liz Taylor swings by.”
What’s changed since the mid 2010s is that a lot of Hollywood’s current gatekeepers are queer people who were fighting from the bottom a decade ago. “It's the people, the gatekeepers who are now going, ‘We are going to make this [queer] story,’” Bailey says. “This narrative that gay people have to be closeted in order [for a project] to be commercial and in order for things to be interesting to people—it's been dismantled. But it's slow because it's not just straight people who think that—I think everyone believed that in the system of Hollywood.”
Nyswaner, who has been working in Hollywood since the early ‘80s, has seen that shift up close. “When I grew up in the ‘60s and early ‘70s, I never heard the word ‘homosexual’ spoken aloud,” he says. “There was no conversation that I ever had with anybody about homosexuality. It was not just bad, it was the unspeakable thing—that's how terrified people were of us.”
And while he agrees that, in some ways, it feels like the LGBTQ+ community is once again losing ground on some rights, Nyswaner refuses to accept that there hasn’t been change. “Sometimes I hear people say, ‘Well, we haven't gotten anywhere.’ And I'm here to say, ‘Oh, yes, we have.’ Because actually you can turn on the television and find gay characters.”
Fellow Travelers is the culmination of a dream for a number of the men involved in the series.
“When I met Ron, he was talking about how he thinks about this as his lifelong legacy project,” Bailey says. “And I just said to him, ‘Whoever ends up going on this journey with you, I think it'll be the same [for them] probably.’”
“In some ways, Fellow Travelers is a span of my life,” Ron Nyswaner says. “I was an infant in the McCarthy era. And then I came out of the closet in 1978 and just danced and did cocaine and had multiple sexual partners—we didn't know what was coming, which was the AIDS crisis.” Nyswaner was nominated for a Best Original Screenplay Oscar in 1993 for Philadelphia, the landmark drama about an AIDS patient who sues his employers for AIDS discrimination. In a way, the historical span of Fellow Travelers gives the battles fought in Philadelphia their context.
Rogers remembers being a closeted soccer player in the late 2000s, watching Tom Ford’s A Single Man and hoping one day to be able to find love and take control of his own narrative. And Bailey recalls, post-Bridgerton, realizing that he could suddenly write his own destiny and vowing to seek out “a sweeping gay love story.”
Bomer, meanwhile, says—laughing, but seemingly dead serious—that it’s his goal to play a queer character from every decade of the 20th century. “A queer Decalogue,” he says, referencing the Krzysztof Kieślowski classic.
Bomer’s next project might just help him do that. He’s currently producing a Steven Soderbergh film on Lawrence v. Texas, the case that overturned the sodomy laws in Texas in 2003 but started in the 90s.
There are many more stories to tell. And as our interview winds down, Bomer and Bailey start spitballing dream projects.
We talk about All of Us Strangers director Andrew Haigh, who’s revered for his portraits of gay intimacy. “Andrew Haigh has been a special filmmaker for years,” Bailey says. “I think [his film] Weekend informed actually how I approached the sex scenes in [Fellow Travelers].”
“I’d love to play Jessica Fletcher's queer grandson who moves back to Cabot Cove,” Bomer says, referencing Angela Lansbury’s iconic role in Murder, She Wrote. “He's inherited her house and he finds an old journal in her library, and it's a case she never saw and he takes up her mantle.”
And moments before the restaurant speakers suddenly start blaring George Michael’s “Freedom ’90,” Bailey comes in with a killer pitch: “I’m obsessed with the Sacred Band of Thebes, an army of 300 gay lovers in [ancient] Greece. They partnered in pairs, this gay army, and they overthrew a Spartan army… I want to do that as a comedy.”
“Oh hell yes!” Bomer says.
“Just get all the queer actors together,” Bailey says, laughing.
“Lee Pace, everyone,” Bomer says.
“Where would we film it?” Bailey asks.
“Mykonos?” Bomer suggests.
“Flaming Saddles, down the road,” Bailey counters with a chuckle, referring to a gay bar in midtown.
“Oil us up and let’s go!” Bomer says.

Hot Rod: Remembering ‘ Rowdy ’ Roddy Piper
Today is the nine year anniversary of the death of WWE Hall of Famer and Wrestling Legend , ‘ Rowdy ’ Roddy Piper. I have mentioned Piper in my article about Scottish wrestlers that I did in June, if you haven’t , please go check that out . I’m doing this article as a tribute to Hot Rod by celebrating his life and career as a wrestler and an actor.
Roddy Piper was born Roderick George Toombs on April 17, 1954 in Saskatoon , Canada . He was of Scottish descent due to his mother, Eileen , being of Scottish- Canadian descent. His father , Stanley , was of Anglo-Canadian descent. He spent his childhood being raised in the city of Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he attended school. He was expelled from school due to having a switchblade knife when he was in middle school. He also left home after having a dispute with his father and decided to stay in a local hostel. For income during this time , Toombs was hired by local professional wrestlers to run errands all while he worked at a few gyms. He also learned to play the bagpipes , however , he has claimed that he didn’t know where he started with them. Thus , he also had a lifelong best friend , Cam Connor , a retired National Hockey League Player ( NHL ).
Toombs was a black belt in the sport of Judo and an amateur wrestler before deciding to train for professional wrestling. He was trained by Gene LeBell , a former Judo instructor, professional wrestler, and stuntman. Therefore , under the guidance of wrestling promoter , Al Tomko , he had his first match in front of an audience with ‘ Midget Wrestlers ’. Therefore , he was earning money to survive by wrestling all while going back to school.
Toombs’ first match in a well known wrestling promotion was against Larry Henning , the father of ‘ Mr. Perfect ’ Curt Henning , and the grandfather of former WWE Superstar, Curtis Axel. The match took place in the American Wrestling Association ( AWA). For his entrance, he had friends play bagpipes for him as he handed out Dandelions to the AWA audience. The announcer of the promotion only knew that his name was Roddy, thus , he came up with the name ‘ Roddy Piper ’. Therefore, Toombs would be known as Roddy Piper. He was an enhancement talent in the same promotion from 1973-1975. This meant that he was paid to wrestle and lose matches against the top wrestlers in the AWA. He did the same for the NWA Central States territory. This territory consisted of Missouri , Iowa, and Nebraska. He also was an enhancement talent in the Maritimes for the Eastern Sports Association. He also was booked in the NWA Houston Wrestling Promotion under Paul Boesch and Big Time Rasslin under Fritz Von Erich. Both promotions were located in Texas.
In late 1975 and going into 1976 , Piper was the top Heel for the NWA Hollywood Wrestling Promotion, which was owned by Gene and Mike LeBell. A Heel is a wrestler who is considered the ‘ villain ’ and hated by wrestling fans. Piper was also booked to work at NWA San Francisco, which was owned by Roy Shire , in 1977 and 1978. He was feuding with Gory Guerrero and Chaco Guerrero Sr, the father and brother of Eddie Guerrero. Their feud included Piper losing his hair in a match and a few loser leaves town matches . This meant that whoever lost , had to leave the wrestling territory. Piper also appeared as The Mask Canadian in the territory as well. He was soon unmasked by Hector Guerrero. Piper also worked in the Pacific Northwest , Georgia, and Mid-Atlantic territories. He made his return to Jim Crockett Promotions in 1983 after wrestling in Puerto Rico. When he returned to Georgia , he became a fan favorite and feuded with top stars such as Ric Flair, Sgt Slaughter , and Greg ‘ The Hammer ’ Valentine.
In 1983, at the first Starrcade show , Piper and Valentine had a Dog Collar match. This type of match is when two wrestlers are strapped together by two dog collars and chains. During the match , Piper suffered from a broken eardrum in his left ear due to Valentine hitting him with the collar of the chain. He lost 50%-75% of his ability to hear due to this . He also made a few early appearances in the WWF in 1979 under Vince McMahon Sr. His first match in the promotion was against an Enhancement Talent named Frankie Williams. Thus, wrestling manager , ‘ Classy ’ Freddie Blassie , decided to place toilet paper in Piper’s bagpipes , therefore , the crowd wouldn’t be able to hear them as he made his way to the ring.
Piper returned to the WWF in 1984 under Vince McMahon Jr., after being advised to finish out his contract with Jim Crockett promotions in 1983. He was in a managerial role when he returned when he was partnered with ‘ Mr. Wonderful ’ Paul Orndorff, and ‘ Dr. D ’ David Schultz. This role ended and he soon became an in ring competitor full time . Nevertheless, with his strong microphone skills, he was given his own little segment called , ‘ Piper’s Pit ’ . The segment took place for three years , ending in 1987. He insulted talent such as Bruno Sammartino, which their storyline ended with Piper losing in a Steel Cage match in 1986. He also insulted Jimmy ‘ Superfly ’ Snuka, which left him being hit in the head with a coconut. His most well known storyline is with Hulk Hogan , Mr. T, and Pop Star , Cyndi Lauper. Hogan and Piper faced off for the WWF on an episode of MTV’s ‘ The War To Settle The Score ’ in 1985. Nevertheless, this storyline and event went on to help set up the first Wrestlemania.
Piper returned as a Babyface in 1986 on ‘ Championship Wrestling ’ for a match against AJ Petrucci. A Babyface is a wrestler who is the hero and is loved by the fans. During the storyline , Piper became upset after finding the ‘ Piper’s Pit ’ segment was now ‘ The Flower Shop ’ , an interview segmented hosted by fellow talent, Adrian Adonis. Adonis also decided to hire ‘ Cowboy ’ Bob Orton , the father of WWE Superstar, Randy Orton , and former bodyguard of Piper, as his own bodyguard. Piper soon destroyed the set with a baseball bat, leaving the two to have a match at Wrestlemania lll, before he retired from wrestling to start an acting career. He returned in 1989 and interviewed Brother Love ( Bruce Pritchard ). He also became a co-host alongside Gorilla Monsoon for the show , ‘ Prime Time Wrestling ’ the same year. He had feuds with major stars such as Bobby Heenan and Rick Rude. Piper would return to the show in 1991.
Piper went on to star in the iconic 1988 sci-fi film , ‘ They Live ’ , which was directed by John Carpenter. Piper’s signature line from the movie was , “ I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass. And I’m all out of bubble gum. ” . This movie made him a ‘ Cult Icon ’ according to Entertainment Weekly magazine.
In 1994, he returned to the WWF again as the guest referee for the WWF World Heavyweight Championship match with Bret hart and Yokozuna at Wrestlemania 10. He soon started a feud with Jerry ‘ The King ’ Lawler. He also began hosting a segment called ‘ The Bottom Line ’ on ‘ All American Wrestling’ . He took a break in 1995 before coming back in 1996 , taking on the role of Interim WWF President. He reinstated The Ultimate Warrior and participated in a “ Hollywood Backlot Brawl ” match against Goldust at Wrestlemania 12. He soon went to WCW and feuded with Hollywood Hogan and the nWo.
On the November 18 episode of ‘ Monday Nitro ’ , Piper revealed that Eric Bischoff was the newest member of the nWo. Thus , this led the faction to attack Piper after doing so. Ric Flair and the 4 Horseman offered to help Piper against Hogan , thus , on the December 9 edition of ‘ Monday Nitro ’, he declined and went on to defeat his long time rival on his own as he declared he would at Starrcade in 1996. In 1997 , Piper joined forces with Flair and the Horseman to battle the nWo. Piper took a hiatus from the promotion , only to return in 1998 as the new Commissioner of WCW. His last WCW appearance was in 2000.
Piper made a few more appearances in WWE and went on to make an appearance in TNA. He continued wrestling on the independent wrestling circuit until his retirement in 2011. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005 by Ric Flair. Piper died at the age of 61 from a Heart Attack on July 31 , 2015 in Hollywood , California. Piper is considered to be the Greatest Heel of All Time. Wrestlers such as Drew McIntyre, MJF, and Ronda Rousey were all fans of Piper. He gifted Rousey his nickname ‘ Rowdy ’ and his jacket. She’s wore it to the ring .
My Final Thoughts:
Roddy Piper is my favorite Heel of all time. I love how he didn’t care what you thought about him . He was also pretty cool as well. I wish I could’ve seen him in his prime and met him. Have you met Rowdy Roddy Piper? What is your favorite Roddy Piper match or moment? Let me know!
Love You All,
- Kay

Day 17 - The Starving Artist part 2
This is Part 2 of Day 5's entry, The Starving Artist
The Starving Artist Part 2
Eloise sat outside the hostel, finishing another bottle of red. Crouched down in the slums of her once beautiful city, she stared at the now empty bottle.
‘How many of these did I drink today?’ She asked herself, lost in thought. It had been far from the first time that she had asked herself this. While Wine might not have the highest alcoholic content in it, Eloise found herself more and more as she struggled to live in the Nazi occupied city of Paris.
The door beside her opened and the nurse, Céline stepped out, an unlit cigarette in her hand. She looked down at Eloise as she took out her zippo and started a flame, holding it out to the densely wrapped tobacco between her lips. She blew out a puff of smoke before finally asking. “What are you still doing here?”
Eloise sighed. She couldn’t really look at her directly, so she settled for the light reflection of her onto the clear wine bottle, the candle light in between them providing the view on this dreary night. “How long has she been in there?”
Céline asked, “Whom?” in a flat tone, struggling to keep herself too invested.
Elosie said, “The old woman, The one I sketched. How long was she in there?”
Céline shrugged, “Maybe five years, or ten or however many. She was there before I got here.”
“You know she actually woke up this time? I couldn’t believe that.”
“Yes, right. You mentioned that before. The first time she had been fully conscious since I arrived. What of it?” Céline asked as she took a deep inhale, thoroughly enjoying the sensation of the smoke building up and being expelled from her body.
“She knew so little of the world. She seemed so… Happy. Like she knew that her son was going to come for her one day. I don’t know how anyone can believe such things at a time like this.” Eloise sniffled, her eyes covered by a thick layer of water just waiting to escape her eyelids.
Céline rolled her eyes, looking up at the dark sky above before finally looking down at Eloise and doing a half assed attempt to disguise her sigh as blowing more smoke. “It’s easy to have hope when you’re living a good life. Things weren't always so bad and things might get better, but it’ll never get the same as it used to be. Who’s to say if hope is truly dead or not? That’s for the next generation to decide, long after this war is over and done with.”
“I think I had hope once…” Eloise said. “I used to be naive and wide eyed. I left my family farm to come here. I painted the serene landscapes as I traveled, and what did it get me? I always wanted to move to Paris and become an artist… I guess I got my wish…” Some of the tears finally let loose as they began to traverse down her cheek, dangling and slowly dripping off her chin. “I… I asked for this life. I had no idea how bad things were going to get. Just how quickly France would fall in this war. What if it never gets better? Could I seriously live with myself like this? Just rotting on the streets?”
Céline sat down beside Eloise, telling her, “Maybe they will, maybe they won’t. We can’t focus on such thoughts when people haven’t given up yet. That’s why your mission is important at all. Couriers like you keep the resistance talking, especially when we fear those pigs might be onto us. As long as there’s people willing to fight, the struggle isn’t completely hopeless… just mostly hopeless.”
Eloise wiped her face, “Wow, you’re really not good at being uplifting, are you?”
Céline let out a laugh, the closest thing to a smile Eloise ever saw on that face. “No, I’m not. I don’t know much about any of that freudian junk. But what I do know is how to numb the pain.
Céline passed her cigarette over to Eloise, who gladly accepted it, taking a deep puff of smoke.

“Picture this, you’re deep in the wilderness of a foreign country, with friends you met only two days before, united by a single word: Adventure. Far away from screens and ‘social’ media (what’s so ‘social’ about social media anyways??). Your eyes drink from the most magnificent views known to man as from a sea of endless joy, you expel your worldly desires and anxieties into each hole you shit in. The 9-5 life just doesn’t work for you. You’re not one of those sheep.” I think there’s such thing as making too much of an experience.
I had a dream that Anna Karenina became popular on Tik Tok and suddenly it was everybody’s favorite book. I don’t want to call it a nightmare, but I definitely didn’t like it. I read classics because I want to be different. I like reading books, but I like that I’m a reader. I like traveling, I like backpacking to foreign countries, I like the people that I meet in hostels, and I also like that I’m a traveler. I look at the American families I see on vacation, uniform in Patagonia (I also brought a Patagonia sweater), with disdain. Uncultured Americans, soulless, staying in hotels, refusing to tip their ‘free’ tour guides. Not like me, I travel the right way. Vanity, hypocrisy, call it whatever you want.
I met a 54-year-old Scottish hairdresser named Donna who booked a 6 week trip to Peru on 2 days notice, not knowing a word of Spanish, with the purpose of going on a shaman-guided Ayahuasca trip in Iquitos, her first experience with psychedelics. This is a woman that knows how to live.

Life at NLU is a vibrant experience with diverse threads of legal academia, experiential learning, and a dynamic social environment. From rigorous classroom discussions to real-world application through moot courts and internships, NLUs cultivate a holistic learning environment.
Beyond academic diligence, this blog seeks to answer the often-asked question, "How is life in an NLU?" by examining the vibrant student culture, extracurricular activities, and the unity that binds students together. Join us on this exploration as we navigate how life is in an NLU in India, where education extends far beyond the classroom.
The Academic Journey:
In the hallowed life at NLU, every day is a dynamic interplay of legal discourse and practical application. The rigorous curriculum fosters critical thinking and analytical skills, preparing students for the complexities of the legal world. The faculty comprises seasoned professionals and scholars who guide students with expertise and mentorship.
Beyond the classrooms, life at NLU is marked by a lively atmosphere. Moot courts, seminars, and legal events punctuate the academic calendar, offering students opportunities to showcase their legal acumen. The campus buzzes with intellectual discussions, where students engage in debates that go beyond textbooks.
However, life at NLU isn't just about academics. The vibrant student community ensures a holistic experience. Cultural fests, sports competitions, and student-driven initiatives create a balanced environment, nurturing not only legal minds but also well-rounded individuals.
The First Year:
Wondering what daily life is like for a first-year student at NLU?
First-year students at NLU delve into foundational legal subjects of clat, laying the groundwork for their future expertise. The workload is demanding, but the faculty's guidance and support make the journey intellectually stimulating. Moot courts and legal research assignments become integral parts of daily life, honing practical skills alongside theoretical knowledge.
Socially, the first year is a time of forging lifelong friendships. NLU's close-knit community ensures a supportive environment, with seniors offering advice and camaraderie. Cultural
events and extracurricular activities provide much-needed breaks from studies, fostering a holistic approach to student life.
The first year at NLU unfolds as a period of growth, resilience, and the formation of a solid academic foundation. It sets the stage for a rewarding journey through the unique and dynamic world of legal education.
Hostel Life:
People often ask “How is hostel life in NLUs?” Hostel life in NLUs is a dynamic and integral aspect of the overall experience. NLUs typically offer on-campus housing, fostering a close-knit community among students.
The hostels buzz with intellectual discussions, late-night study sessions, and collaborative endeavors. This environment not only enhances academic pursuits but also provides a platform for personal growth and independence. From moot court preparations to cultural events, hostel life in NLUs is an integral part of the holistic and enriching journey through legal education.
There are some regulations to avoid misconduct. Ragging is punishable in the University. Any student indulging in ragging may be expelled from the University for one to four semesters or debarred admission to any other Institution.
All the students are required to stay in the University Halls of Residence. There are separate Halls of Residence for Girls and Boys respectively. The administration of the Halls of Residence is the direct responsibility of the Resident Wardens.
The collegium of the Wardens coordinates the activities, resolves conflicts if any, and manages the corporate life in the Halls of Residence. The University insists on a very high standard of discipline from the students befitting the status and reputation of the University. The Wardens initiate disciplinary proceedings in cases of violation of hostel rules & regulations.
Internships:
Internships are mandatory in the NLU curriculum, aligning with the professional nature of the course. Each semester, students engage in practical, on-field experiences, exploring diverse sectors like NGOs, Governmental Departments, Lawyer Chambers, Corporates, Banks, Law firms, etc. By diversifying internships throughout the five years, students gain a comprehensive understanding of various legal domains. This approach allows them to guide their choice of industry upon graduation.
Sports and Extracurricular activities:
Life at NLU has the opportunity to explore diverse campus communities by joining various associations and clubs. Some University-established associations boast renowned alumni who have excelled in their careers. Additionally, numerous student-led initiatives and clubs address contemporary issues and align with current interests. Active participation in campus festivals is encouraged, fostering a vibrant and engaged student community.
The Sports Committee orchestrates an array of sporting events held throughout the year. Intra-university activities encompass on-field sports such as basketball, football, cricket, badminton, and hockey, as well as indoor sports like carrom, table tennis, and chess. Additionally, the committee plays a pivotal role in coordinating inter-university tournaments and collaborating with many institutions.
Placements:
Typically, placement at National Law Universities commences in April-May annually. Recruiters visit law university campuses, evaluating candidates based on academic records and legal aptitude. Each NLU operates a dedicated 'Placement Bureau' or 'Recruitment Committee' overseeing the entire process. The recruitment and placement procedure involves pre-placement talks, pre-interview screening, and the eventual issuance of placement offers.
To conclude, in the twisted realm of academic pursuits, social dynamics, and personal growth, life at NLU emerges as a transformative journey. “How is life in an NLU” is the question that is asked by every law student.
NLU life is a harmonious blend of intellectual rigor and vibrant companionship. The academic challenges and the vibrant student community foster friendships that extend beyond the confines of classrooms, creating a supportive network. Cultural events, sports competitions, and student-led initiatives contribute to a holistic experience, shaping well-rounded personalities. How is hostel life in the NLUs? The hostel life becomes the crucible of independence, nurturing resilience, and lifelong bonds. Internships provide practical insights into the legal profession, while diverse associations and clubs offer avenues for exploration. The placement season opens doors to future opportunities.
In essence, life at NLU is an enriching journey, where students not only acquire legal expertise but also cultivate essential life skills, preparing them for the dynamic challenges of the legal landscape and beyond.

A Letter from Ruchira Gupta
“I wrote this story because I wanted to share with you that someone somewhere of your age fought back and won.”
Tumblr media
I started writing this story when a fourteen-year-old girl just like Heera won a gold medal in a karate competition in Forbesganj. She was being groomed for prostitution along with other girls in her lane. A lane just like Girls Bazaar.
Her journey was not easy. Her achievement was heroic. I saw how she and her friends overcame hunger, fought off their fear, and stood up to traffickers with grace and gusto.
An annual cattle fair used to claim girls from that lane every year. When my NGO, Apne Aap, opened a community center and hostel there, we were constantly attacked by men like Gainul and Ravi Lala. They would stalk the mothers, their daughters, and me, hurling abuses, throwing stones, stealing from our offices, and even kidnapping girls.
We built higher walls around the hostel to prevent traffickers from jumping over. I posted guards outside my home, hired lawyers, filed police complaints and cases in court. Just like Mai, some mothers in the lane disobeyed their husbands, even though they were beaten up. Their daughters were the first batch of girls in our hostel.
Most of the events in this book are inspired by real people, places, and events.
I still remember it was early morning and I was fast asleep when a boy and his mother came to my home asking for help. The boy’s sister and cousin were locked up by traffickers who wanted to stop the girls from returning to our hostel. We had to mobilize the police to get them out. I noticed then that the girls were badly bruised, while the traffickers were unscathed. I wished that the girls had been able to fight back. Our Apne Aap women’s group met that afternoon at the center. Everyone was scared that they would be beaten in retaliation for the police raid. That’s when I suggested martial arts classes.
The women loved the idea. Someone knew a local karate teacher who taught in a private boys’ school. We hired him and the classes began. The bullying at school stopped. When the girls began to win competitions, something changed. The very townspeople who had asked the school principal to expel our red-light children began to respect them. Fathers in the community began to value their daughters.
The biggest change was in the girls themselves. They began to own their bodies and respect themselves. Their grades improved along with their self-confidence. Hundreds of girls from the lane have since finished school. Many are college graduates. They have jobs as animation artists, teachers, doctors, lawyers, chefs, and managers of pizza parlors and gas stations.
The truth is that there is not one, but many Heeras. Girls Bazaars still exist in many parts of our world, including the US. The brothel in Queens is real. A trafficking survivor from Indonesia told me the story of how she was locked up there and escaped by disguising herself in a burka. She is now a global leader in the struggle against trafficking.
The International Labour Organization estimates that there are over 40 million victims of human trafficking globally, with hundreds of thousands of victims in the United States. Human trafficking is the second-largest organized crime in the world, involving billions of dol- lars, according to the United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
Thank you so much for reading I Kick and I Fly. I wrote this story because I wanted to share with you that someone somewhere of your age fought back and won. I wanted you to know that change is possible. I have witnessed it in my own lifetime.
Heera’s story is a story of hope in spite of great odds. It’s about our bodies—who they belong to and the command they can give us. It is the story of a community that resolves to make change contagious and succeeds. I hope you find a friend in Heera who will give you some clues to making the changes you would like in your own life.
The martial arts classes continue in Forbesganj.

There is a theory among fans that Rollo will be expelled and transferred to the NRC
Well, you understand that I can't help but beat this idea!
Dark Mirror chooses a dorm for Rollo. Flamme suddenly raises her hand to attract attention.
-Mr. Director Crowley, can I choose a dorm on my own?
-Oh, that's tradition,Flamme. The Dark Mirror chooses a suitable dormitory for you. - Crowley answered, taken aback, looking at the young man.
Suddenly, a dark mirror interrupts all the voices in the hall.
-Heartslabyul
Deuce cursed softly as he stood next to Ace. "Damn it!Not to us!!"
-It seems that this guy will not be very well received in any dorm - Grimm grinned sitting on Yuu's shoulder.
-Yeaaah…it won't be easy for him at first. But on the other hand, Heartslabyul with rules will be a more similar place to NBC for him..
-I would prefer to stay in Ramshackle. -Rollo announces very sharply, already anticipating his life with the Prefect.
Everyone in the audience gasps with surprise and confusion. Why would a magician suddenly choose this dorm?!
-WHAT THE HELL?! -Grimm shouted in disbelief. ***
Yuu tries to convince Rollo not to go to their dorm.
-Mr. Flamme, please think carefully. Ramshackle is definitely not a place where anyone in their right mind would want to go…At least…look at Heartslabyul. Yes, there are strict rules, but there is a more comfortable atmosphere for you.
-Yeah..Deuce is already dreaming of breaking head if he even takes a step towards them… - Grimm snorted softly, looking apprehensively at the former president of the school board.
-Grimm, you're definitely not helping me…
-I heard, Prefect, that you spoke about your hostel as "Exceptional", so I was very interested in this position. "To be an exception to all possible rules and procedures"
-That is, it does not bother you at all that you will have to live with freshmen, one of whom is a fire-eared cat with fire, and the second person does not have magic from another world… ***
Under heavy negotiations, Rollo was still allowed to stay in Ramshackle, much to Yuu's regret. Now they really need to be a prefect. In addition, for a high school student…not the best arrangement for them.
-Mr. Flamme…before we go inside…I ask you to gather all your courage. Because I know how you definitely… um…..interested? In cleanliness….Ramshackle definitely won't fit your taste on any point…
-Oh, I'm sure you're completely exaggerating.
-Ooooooooooh, if only it were so….
Yuu shows Ramshackle. Still in a dilapidated state. With a lot of cobwebs and mold. But definitely in a better way than when Yuu and Grimm came for the first time.
-HAVE MERCY ON THE RIGHTEOUS JUDGE?!WHAT IS THIS PLACE?! - Rollo is horrified to notice every inch of dust around him and… mold on the ceiling?!Because the roof is leaking?!And there's still some weed growing in the walls somewhere?
-I warned you, didn't I? ***
First-year students are interested in Yuu how everything went in the evening in a video chat.
Yuu dejectedly and extremely awkwardly lowers his head.
-He fainted…..
All - ???
Yuu covers his face with his hands and exhales heavily.
-He felt so bad from the sight of the dorm that he fainted….the nurse said he was in shock.
The first-year students are quietly choking with laughter, and really do not want to pour salt on Yuu's wound.
Epel biting her lip so as not to burst out laughing. - Well……he deserved it.
Yuu rubs the bridge of his nose tiredly. - Deuce, please warn Riddle that he may ask tomorrow morning to live on a full basis as a student of your dorm…

Caught in a diplomatic limbo, Mehran Karimi Nasseri made a small area of Roissy Charles de Gaulle airport his home in 1988.
His experience inspired the 2004 film, The Terminal, starring Tom Hanks.
Mr Nasseri was eventually given the right to live in France, but he ended up returning to the airport a few weeks ago, where he died of natural causes, an airport official told AFP.
Born in 1945 in the Iranian province of Khuzestan, Mr Nasseri first flew to Europe in search of his mother.
He spent some years living in Belgium, having been expelled from countries including the UK, the Netherlands and Germany for not having the correct immigration documents. He then went to France, where he made the airport's 2F Terminal his home.
Nestled on his bench surrounded by trolleys containing the possessions he had accumulated, he spent his days writing about his life in a notebook and reading books and newspapers.
His story attracted international media attention and caught the eye of Steven Spielberg, who directed The Terminal, starring Hanks and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
After the film's release, journalists flocked to speak with the man who had inspired a Hollywood movie. At one point, Mr Nazzeri, who called himself "Sir Alfred," was giving up to six interviews a day, Le Parisien reports.
Despite being granted refugee status and the right to remain in France in 1999, he stayed at the airport until 2006, when he was taken to hospital to be treated for an illness. He then spent time living in a hostel using the money he had received for the film, French newspaper Libération reports.
Mr Nasseri returned to the airport a few weeks ago, where he lived until he died, an airport official said.
He was found with several thousands euros in his possession, the official added.

Something that recently occurred to me is that nobody ever made sure Harry reunited with the Dursleys at the end of the year. He takes the train, crosses into muggle King’s Cross and then meets with them.
All on his own. Without supervision.
So what if Harry notices that as well? He is, after all, highly motivated to find an alternative to returning to them.  What if he sends them a letter that he found another place to stay and they would not have to come pick him up in London? And he takes the train, crosses into muggle King’s Cross, says “goodbye and enjoy your holidays” to Ron and Hermione and takes off.
I have two versions of this semi thought out:
1) this happens after second year and is partially driven by Dobby.
Dobby wanted to be free. That was the extent of his plans. Oh right, and “keep Harry Potter safe”. So maybe Dobby sticks with Harry during the last days of second year and they manage to strike up a friendship. This friendship includes Dobby being strictly opposed to Harry living the way he does at the Dursleys.
Between the two of them they have a relatively detailed understanding of the wizarding world, if from a side-line perspective, and the ability to mess with essentially any magic (Dobby), funds and the ability to handle the muggle world (Harry) and zero inhibition or respectful braincells.
Dobby delivers the letter to the Dursleys during the night (Harry doesn’t think they’d treat Hedwig too kindly) and after they reach King’s Cross, the two of them make their own way through London. They take care that Dobby only casts when alone to avoid the trace, Harry drags them to Diagon Alley and Dobby coaches him through wizarding life essentials and their appropriate costs and they get a subscription of the Daily Prophet. They exchange galleons for pounds and live in various youth hostels.
And then Sirius breaks out and they read about his connection to Harry in the paper. Dobby *flips* and hides his Harry Potter, Sir, and himself as well as a house elf can hide.
Dumbledore checks on Harry and panics because the Dursleys haven’t seen him since he went off with the Weasley kids.
Sirius watches that go down from the bushes while he also tries to check on Harry and panics. His priorities and plans go from “see Harry - hunt Peter - contact Harry” to “FIND HARRY - PROTECT HARRY”.
Dobby is questioning whether he should get Harry expelled after all.
Harry misses the days in which the only murder attempts around him were on unicorns.
2) the somewhat cracky edition
This starts at the end of Prisoner of Azkaban. After all, by then he has the experience of living at the Leaky Cauldron for a couple of weeks. And he had freedom from the Dursleys offered to him, getting five wonderful minutes of hope for the future.
He is not going back. Sirius could live on the run for a year, Harry could manage a summer.
So he takes the train, crosses into muggle King’s Cross, says “goodbye, Ron and Hermione, enjoy your holidays”, pretends to go look for the Dursleys, turns right around and reboards the Hogwarts Express. He is kind of curious what it does when it isn’t ferrying around students.
