A passion for exploration
(Known in my notes as ahkaeology)
Tumblr media
Pairing: Ahkmenrah X reader
Warnings(?): Grave robbing
A/N: okay okay I know it's really odd that a wednesday blog is now posting for natm but I went down a rabbit hole and I'm afraid I lost the entrance. History nerd has shown through well and truly :')
Also my first multi part fic :D
Title is courtesy of my mate Abi using AI
Ch 1
Grave robbing
Was desecrating the tombs of these once honoured, omnipotent kings of Egypt really something you were willing to do? Had the circumstances preceding the grave robbery been less bleak, the answer would have undoubtedly been an definitive no. These rulers commanded the uptmost respect in life, and here you were, excavating the only memory that remained. There wasn't a day that went by during your expedition in which guilt did not infiltrate your mind, suffocating your conscience and depriving you of any sleep, even before you came close to finding an ancient tomb. But it wasn't like you had any other choice.
Pushing down your gnawing feelings of dread, you trekked on through the Egyptian desert. Rough sand brushed against your lower legs beneath your simple, calf-length skirt, chafing at the skin. You were the only one of the troupe resigned to walking, as the youngest and the lowest class. Astride camels, the two men had a better view of the surrounding plains, though the blank, barren flats stretched on long beyond the horizon.
"The valley of the kings shan't be too far from this place" called Lord Carnarvon, map still in hand.
You held back a scoff, rolling your eyes as you knew he wasn't looking at you. If only he would admit none of you knew where you were going. The only clue you were given was that the gold rich landmark was announced by a grand pyramid at the end of a hollowed valley consisting of a multitude of others. What a shame that this was the Egyptian desert.
Filled with pyramids.
Days and days stretched on of travel, and eventually, you stopped counting the sunrises, resigning to the fact that this would only stop when the valley was found, however long that took.
As with most great things, the discovery of the valley occurred at a time when you least expected. You had taken advantage of a small oasis, resting for a few hours and permitting the camels an indulgent drink. Howard Carter dozed beside you, hat pulled low over his face, in order to shield his resting eyes from the blazing fire of the sun. Carnarvon had taken his liberty and ran off, or so you had hoped. No, in fact he was continuing the investigation alone and on foot, clutching a worn, shoddy map, which was twinged a grimey brown with years of filth accumulated around the edges of the paper. He never strayed far, though attempted to work out his bearings, using the wind or some pretentious bullshit you never bothered listening to. No, you were perfectly content drawing in the sand with a stick you had found and claimed an hour or so prior.
You were more than unimpressed when the sketches you had so tediously etched into the sand were scattered by Carnarvon sprinting back to the small camp. Jolted awake, Carter sat up sharply, alarm etched across his features.
"Blimey, good sir! You gave me quite the fright!" He exclaimed as you nodded in agreement.
"Are you alright?" You asked, though your eyes may have given away your disinterest (had either man been paying an ounce of attention).
"Shh!" Carnarvon interrupted your pleasant concern, to which you rolled your eyes and began attempting to recover your drawings. "Carter, good sir! I dare say I've found it. I've discovered the pyramid!"
A bold statement, and not the first time either. No, twice prior you had been dragged into the colossal ancient skyscrapers, only to find they were far from your true destination. Empty of any treasure or historical worth beyond the buildings themselves, you continued on, fruitless. Grand structures were quite an obvious goldmine, and previous grave robbers had left the tombs void of, well, anything.
Though of course, it was more than worth it to explore this fresh discovery, not taking any chances.
Time was of the essence, or so you were told. Camels saddled up in record time, you were hoisted up from your seat on the floor by Carter, borderline dragged up.
"Come, young Y/N, you heard his lordship. We may have found the Valley. Hurry on, now" his words were gentle, still treating you as he had done in your childhood, despite the fact you were now 19. It was something that you both appreciated and hated simultaneously. Howard was kind to you, much more so than Lord Carnarvon, who cared as little for you as you did for him. The mutual disinterested made for some long, awkward silences, and many threats to leave you in an unknown grave.
Still dragging you by the arm, Carter began to untie his camel, before finally letting go of you. The rush was honestly needless, you had been expeditioning for months at the least, what harm would a few mere minutes cause? But the men were adamant, and there was no arguing, especially not from a useless child as yourself.
"Can I at least keep my stick?"
Recieving no reply from Carnarvon and an incredulous stare from Carter, you concluded the answer was yes.
The journey from the oasis to the pyramid was shorter than anticipated, though still rather long. Another day passed, spent entirely wandering through the desert. Exhaustion washed over your entire body, and it was a war every minute to keep your eyes open. But, alas, you must continue, and eventually your trek drew to a close as with further examination, it became clear this pyramid was not what you were searching for.
Disappointment and rage filled Carnarvon upon the realisation that this was, in fact, not the Valley of the Gates of the Kings, but rather a singular, sandy pyramid. "Why, there must be some mistake!" He complained impetuantly, always one to shift blame elsewhere. You exchanged a look with Carter, who for once was willing to admit the incompetence of the troupe's leader. After all, what were the chances that a random pyramid would mark the infamous, esteemed valley?
From a distance it appeared mighty, though in fact that was more than likely a mirage caused by the monochromatic nature if the desert. Upon further examination, however, the pyramid was far from the grandeur anticipated by Carnarvon and Carter. Huge gashes and rifts in the brickwork jumped out from metres away. Crumbling brickwork was cratered, resembling a sponge with many holes, as dusty gravel avalanched down the sides of the architecture at every other interval. Overall it was worn and aged, therefore more likely to be looted and barren.
"I do say it's worth taking a look around, my lord." You spoke, addressing him clearly. Carnarvon waved his hand dismissively, wishing you out of his presence.
"Yes, yes. Go ahead child." Did you expect that? No. Did you need to be told twice? Also no. A small grin gracing your features, you took off into the pyramid.
Racing across the gravely surface of the desert, the sand provided a slight level of resistance. Nevertheless, you persevered onwards, stride refusing to falter. Basking in the glorious heat of the warm Egyptian sun's rays casting down on your face, you closed your eyes as you ran, chin tilted upwards. Naturally, this obscured your vision, rendering you blind, and therefore leading you to miss the gaping hole in the ground.
A short squeala of surprise passed your lips as you suddenly found yourself unexpectedly falling through the earth. The drop was rather long, and you landed in a heap on the floor of the dugout with a large thud. You weren't aware of how long you were unconscious, but judging by the severe lack of any source of light, sunset had passed. Pain shot through your body, coarsing through your veins and ricocheting off each of your bones in turn. Head pounding, you groaned slightly, trying to work out what in the hell just happened to you.
Darkness continued to fill the room, prompting you to fish within one of your pockets, pulling out a match and striking it aflame. The hidden chamber was large, that much you could tell even despite the dim lighting. Blinking twice as you began to, very slightly, register your surroundings, you noticed the sheer obscurity of this interior. You'd heard of the saying 'paintings that seemed to follow you around the room', but this gave a new meaning to those words.
No, wait.
Those paintings were moving, and not metaphorically. Eyes widening, you began to notice everything in the tomb writhing like a cluster of cobras. Onyx black cats prowled upon shelves, worn linen bandages slowly unfurling from being bound around each of their limbs. Animated drawings of men, deities and horses alike moved naturally, as though it were a perfectly normal occurrence. Shabti servants, the colour of oxidised copper and ranging from 5-30cm tall formed an army scattered throughout the tomb. Then, slowly, as though delaying the inevitable, your eyes trained upon it.
The sarcophagus.
Shuffling away rapidly, your back hit the decrepit wall of the hidden grave. The embodiment of terror plastered over your face, you watched in horror as the coffin began to violently shake. Your blood ran cold as bangs from the inside began to echo across the acoustic chamber. The rusted hinges were worn and flimsy, and the bolts began to unscrew from their holdings. Padlocks had become frail with ages and popped open, one almost smacking you square in the forehead, to which you responded with a short yelp. For a moment, all movement ceased, as though whatever was inside had begun to listen to the intruder in their grave. You took liberty of the fleeting moment, and began to craft a way out. The quiet was short lived, however, as, with one final, mighty heave, the final lock was broken.
The sarcophagus had been opened.
Your breath caught in your throat, the air thick and suffocating as you watched a wrapped hand emerge from the tomb. The coffin lid was ajar, though it didn't take much pushing to be removed almost entirely. Almost at once, the creatures residing in the grave marched forward, crowding their newly awoken master. Hidden in the shadows, you froze, hoping to remain unseen and ignored, and thus leaving unscathed. Soon enough Carter and Carnarvon were bound to find you?
Right?
A huge open grave couldn't be subtle, you only missed it as you eyes were closed. A stupid decision really, and you mentally cursed yourself.
You remained rooted to the spot on the freezing floor, as the reanimated corpse continued to rise from its grave. Surely this was an affect of your concussion; for all you knew this was just an unconscious dream. Besides, with all the travel in the desert, dehydration had undoubtedly left you delirious. It was at that split second of slight relaxation (if you could call it that) in which you spied the piles of treasure sloping at every corner of the tomb. What could you say - you were a grave robber. Carnarvon would be so proud - if you returned alive that was.
It began to claw at the ancient, frayed linen covering its face, causing your heart to race: it thumped so hard you swore you'd be given away. Praying you didn't go into cardiac arrest, you continued staring bug-eyed as the bandages unfurled in front of you, like the dramatic unveiling of an innovative new invention. Closing your eyes for the second time that day, you winced, raising your arms to shield your face from the horrors you were undoubtedly about to witness. Bile rose in your throat as your mouth drew dry. Images of rancid, rotting flesh peeling off bones flashed through your mind, prompting your whole body to tremble.
'I'm just delirious. Any moment now I'll open my eyes to be met with a chamber of riches.' You thought to yourself. Awoken mummies were the stuff of fairytales, and despite what Carnarvon and Carter believed, you were most certainly not a child.
Your internal monologue was cut short however, interrupted by the gentlest of touches placed on your arm. It prompted you to flinch away instantaneously, a soft whimper escaping. Eyes shooting open, you came face to face with the pharoah himself. And he was not what you had anticipated.
He wasn't the scary mummy you were expecting, he was a teenage kid.
Kind, cerulean eyes rimmed with a smoky black eyeliner stared into your own, azure oceans plagued with concern. Concern for you. Such a colour must have been pricelessly rare, sapphires amongst stones.
His golden, tanned hand had felt cold and lifeless against your arm, yet the heat it had radiated was electrifying, continuing to shoot jolts throughout your entire body. His skin was soft and smooth, betraying the fact that this royal had almost certainly never worked a day in his life.
Slightly unruly brown curls and a toned slender figure - he was actually rather cute.
"Are you alright? You seem a little... Lost?" He queried, to which you seemed unable to form a response.
"I- what.. who? What's going on?" You managed, stumbling over your words as your voice cracked slightly.
He gave a small smile, clearly sympathetic of your utter confusion, before gesturing at a golden tablet, as though that were supposed to help you in any way. Noting your expression of utter bewilderment, the undead Pharaoh elaborated.
"That's my tablet, blessed by Khonsu himself. It holds the power to awake the dead at night," he gestures to himself and the cats, who stared at you, blinking and unsure whether it would be safe for them to approach. Then, he pointed to the paintings in the walls and dragged his finger towards the mass of shabti dolls, both of which watched you with the same confusion. "Along with anything else resembling a life form that finds it's way into the presence of the tablet."
"Right." You answered, holding your head and still in shock.
"You needn't be afraid, you know. I'm not going to hurt you."
"Thank you, that is a relief." You swallowed thickly.
He hummed in response, smiling with an amused frown at the fact you feared him.
"So, who exactly are you?" You asked after a short yet not uncomfortable silence.
His lavish outfit betrayed the royal status he claimed in life, only accentuated by the Red Crown, or Deshret supporting a golden snake - the symbol of monarchy- resting atop his sarcophagus. Around his neck fastened a Usekh collar, adorned with teal and umber jewels and beads, and topped with golden accents. Sleeves of cloth draped over his arms, the fibres of the fabric woven with pure gold. The metallic shine of the element was evident in the chromatic sheen of the cape resting over the Pharoah's shoulders. At his waist there hung a Shendyt kilt, fastened with a cloth belt, also elaborately decorated. Beautiful gold jewellery decorated his figure, your eyes drawn in particular to the stunning gold bracelet cuffs he supported on either wrist, encrusted with gemstones, potentially aquamarine or topaz. Once again your attention was drawn to his face.
"I am Ahkmenrah, fourth king of the fourth king. And you are...?"
Stunned into silence for a moment by the regality of the ancient king before you, you blinked and paused briefly before answering.
"Y/N. Y/N L/N."
"So, Y/N, what are you doing in my grave?" Ahkmenrah asked you, barely trying to surpress an amused smile. Your cheeks flushed as you tried to form a lie. This ruler seemed nice, and regardless, you couldn't exactly tell him you were intent on raiding his tomb for riches.
"It was an accident. Really, it was. I was running, and, well, I wasn't exactly looking where I was going."
"Clearly." He smirked. "Why were you in the desert though? Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but you don't appear to be Egyptian."
"What? Oh, no I'm not. I'm English. I came out in an expedition with two other men; Lord Carnarvon and Carter. They're archaeologists." You winced at the manufactured truth. It wasn't entirely a lie, that was what the men claimed to be. Though all your troupe really planned to accomplish was glorified tomb-raiding, a fact that made you sick.
"And they left you here?" Ahkmenrah questioned incredulously, unable to fathom why on earth they would abandon you like this.
"Well, no. Not exactly. They allowed me to go check out the pyramid about 10 yards south, but, as o said, I fell down a hole." You blushed again, this time due to your own stupidity and clumsiness. This was not how to earn the respect of an esteemed king.
Ahkmenrah frowned. "So how long have you been down here?"
"Uh. I don't actually know, I was unconscious for a short time. Or possibly a long time, that I'm not sure of either."
Concern once again crossed the young Pharoah's face. "You poor thing! Are you alright? You're not concussed, are you?"
"Probably." You shrugged, further alarming him.
The next few hours were spent talking to Ahk, discussing everything from the legal affairs of ancient Egypt to the cats that accompanied him in his tomb. Over the course of the night, the two of you had grown closer, both in terms of friendship and literal distance. Most of the other inhabitants of the grave had deemed you safe, returning to their regular routine, and the most curious of the mummified cats, an (aptly) Egyptian mau apparently named Tivali, had become rather taken to you. Eventually, the exhaustion of the day had caught up with you, and you slumped against Ahk's shoulder. Revelling in his presence, contentment washed over you as, for the first time on your quest, you relaxed, finally at ease. Perhaps it was delirium, but in your sleepy state you swore you felt his fingertips grace against your cheek, the ghost of his lips pressing gently against your temple.
"Sleep well, my dear."

How long does it take to climb Manaslu?
The eighth-highest peak in the world, Manaslu, is a spectacular climb. Standing at a height of 8,163 meters (26,781 ft), it is situated in Nepal. You may be wondering how long it takes to reach the top if you're considering taking on this adventure. Now let's dissect it!
Tumblr media
Preparation: Training and Planning
It's important to prepare before you ever set foot on the mountain. The majority of climbers train their bodies and minds for several months. Typically, this comprises:
Physical Training: Building strength, endurance, and flexibility.
Mental Preparation: Developing the mental toughness to handle extreme conditions.
Logistics: Organizing permits, gear, and a reliable guiding service.
Journey to Base Camp
Travel to Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, is the first leg of the trek to Manaslu Base Camp. You will next drive to the trailhead, which is usually in Soti Khola or Arughat. This is a six to seven-hour drive. After that, you'll journey through stunning communities and scenery for roughly six to ten days. Acclimatization, or assisting your body in adjusting to the altitude, is facilitated by this walk.
Acclimatization and Climbing
Once at Base Camp, the real adventure begins. Here's a rough timeline:
Week 1: Base Camp and Acclimatization
Days 1-3: Setting up Base Camp and resting.
Days 4-7: Acclimatization hikes to higher altitudes and returning to Base Camp.
Weeks 2-3: Climbing Rotations
Days 8-14: Climbing to higher camps (Camp 1, Camp 2, Camp 3) and returning to Base Camp for rest. This helps your body get used to the thin air.
Days 15-21: More rotations between camps, gradually moving higher each time.
Week 4: Summit Push
Days 22-28: Weather permitting, you make your summit push. This involves:
Climbing from Base Camp to Camp 1, then Camp 2, Camp 3, and finally Camp 4.
From Camp 4, you'll start your summit attempt, often in the early hours before dawn. The climb from Camp 4 to the summit and back to a lower camp can take about 12-18 hours.
Descent and Return
Although the descent is faster after reaching the summit, caution is still necessary. Usually, returning to Base Camp takes three to four days. After spending another five to seven days trekking from Base Camp to the trailhead, one can drive back to Kathmandu.
Total Time
In total, the entire expedition from Kathmandu and back usually takes around 6-8 weeks. This includes time for acclimatization, climbing rotations, and weather delays.
Personal Experience
The experience of climbing Manaslu was both thrilling and draining. There were breathtaking vistas and hospitable residents along the route to Base Camp. Although difficult, the acclimatization climbs were necessary to help the body adjust to the high altitude. The most difficult part was pushing to the summit while dealing with bitter cold and strong gusts. It was all worthwhile, though, as you stood atop the peak and gazed down at the world below.
Final Thoughts
Manaslu climbing is a challenging but worthwhile experience. It calls for endurance, patience, and careful planning. Manaslu presents a special challenge that will make you cherish your time spent there, regardless of your level of experience as a mountaineer or your level of desire for exploration.

(3AM) ODD Women Series - 40 days Ascent (ONE)
A/N: This story is inspired by the film 'Edie' and my uncle who has recently ascended the Mount Everest (wooo!). I hope you'll like this one.
Also, it takes around at least 40 days or more to ascend Mount Everest (includes, stops, and short breaks). Cheers to those who got there!.
SYNOPSIS: Sage is a woman, who has given almost everything up for the man she loves, only to be dumped, and discarded at the end. Upon receiving a call to remind her of the climbing expedition to Mount Everest that she had booked a year ago and trained for the past few months, she sets off to Tibet, finally doing something for herself and starts recovering parts of her that were lost.
EDIT: PART 2 IS HERE - ASCENT (TWO)
40 Days Ascent
"Wait... what?" Sage's mouth hung agape, almost dropping her utensils on the table, upon hearing what her beau said.
"I think we should see other people..." Henry repeats, as he stared directly at her.
"Wha... why?? Did I do anything wrong? Have I not done enough? what else do you want Henry?!! I've given you all my Time and affection..." Was her tense response. His cold hard glare tried to deter her from speaking up, but she was done being treated like this.
"I feel like this is not going to work anymore... I'm sorry" he replied. His apology didn't sound like one. "You're just not the woman for me..." he added. "But I would like us to remain friends..."
Sage sat back and stared at him, and then laughed at the sudden and painful realization. How could she not have seen it from the start?! Right from the beginning of their relationship, it was clear who was in control. He had taken advantage of her vulnerability and he used that to constantly groom her to fit his ideal.
Henry looked confused, as to why she was laughing. "Sage?"
However, before he could continue, the tables were quickly overturned.
Sage gave Henry a look, her eyebrows raised and a smirk playing on her lips. "Wow, Henry, you really outdid yourself with that apology. I could practically taste the sincerity in the air." She paused, her words tinged with sarcasm, despite hurting inside. She refused to give him the satisfaction of seeing her tears.
"So, I guess I'm just not the right girl for you, huh? It's so devastating! Like, how can I resist being friends with someone who just broke my heart? Such an amazing offer!" Her voice dripped with sarcasm, emphasizing the absurdity of his request.
Without another word, Sage took a deep breath, composed herself, and turned to walk away. Henry called after her, his voice filled with confusion and regret, but she didn't look back. She had made up her mind.
-----
Sage returned home to her flat, feeling a mixture of emotions. She couldn't hold back the tears any longer and let herself cry, releasing the pain that had been building up inside. As she wiped away her tears, her phone pinged, signaling a new email. She hesitantly opened it and her eyes widened with surprise.
There it was, the email confirming her permit to climb Mount Everest—the one she had been waiting for so long. Her heart raced with excitement and determination. It made her remember that she had applied for this adventure way before Henry entered her life. Everest had always been her dream, hidden beneath the weight of their relationship.
But as she read the email, doubts, and thoughts of Henry came rushing back, trying to bring her down. Could she handle such a big challenge mentally? Would she be able to conquer the mountain while dealing with the memories of their failed love? Insecurities filled her mind, making her excitement fade away.
Suddenly, her phone rang. It was a call from a friend who lived in Shanghai, China. They wanted to meet up before she embarked on her climb in Tibet. Sage saw it as a wonderful opportunity to gather strength and support from a trusted friend.
Her friend, Della, noticed the tremor in Sage's voice and sensed the hidden sorrow beneath her words. "Are you okay, Sage? It sounds like you've been crying," Della asked with concern.
Trying to hide her emotions, Sage quickly replied, "Oh, it's nothing, Della. Just going through a tough time, but don't worry about it. We can catch up when I come to Shanghai in a few weeks."
Della wasn't entirely convinced, but she respected Sage's desire to keep things private. She assured Sage that she would be there for her whenever she needed a friend.
-----
A few days later, Sage mindlessly scrolled through social media, and her heart sank as she stumbled upon pictures of Henry. There he was, looking all handsome and happy, surrounded by other girls, as if he had completely moved on. The sight was like a punch to the gut, a painful reminder of how easily he had left her behind.
Overwhelmed by emotions, Sage couldn't hold back the tears that welled up in her eyes. Hurt and betrayed, she cried, her sobs echoing through her empty apartment. The weight of her broken heart felt unbearable, leaving her eyes swollen and her spirit drained.
Exhausted from the outpouring of emotions, Sage eventually succumbed to sleep. As she drifted off, tears still glistening on her cheeks, she made a mental note to limit her time on social media. She realized that constantly checking for updates only brought more pain, a masochistic cycle she needed to break.
With her Everest expedition drawing closer, she knew she had to channel her energy into preparing for the journey ahead. The mountain called to her, its towering presence offering solace and a temporary escape from the pain that still lingered in her heart.
The thought of being in the serene and quiet embrace of the mountain, far away from the distractions of social media and the constant reminders of Henry, gave her a glimmer of hope. She saw it as a chance to escape the cycle of tears and heartache, even if just for a while.
-----
A few days before her departure for Shanghai, Sage's phone rang late at night. Startled, she glanced at the screen to see the name "Henry" flashing. Curiosity mingled with caution as she hesitated before answering the call.
"Hey... Sage," slurred Henry's voice on the other end. It was evident that he had been drinking. Sage braced herself, knowing that this call could only bring trouble.
"I've been thinking about you," Henry mumbled, his words coated with a mixture of desire and desperation. "We had something special, you know? Maybe we can have one last night together."
Sage's heart wavered for a moment, tempted by the familiarity of their past intimacy. But deep down, she knew that giving in to his request would only lead to more pain and confusion. Taking a deep breath, she mustered the strength to respond firmly.
"I'm sorry... I can't. I need to wake up early tomorrow," Sage replied, her voice steady despite the emotions swirling inside her. "I have important things to take care of."
"But it's the weekend," Henry protested, his voice laced with seduction.
"S-sorry, Henry. I just can't," she stammered, her resolve firm. With a determined click, she ended the call and powered off her phone.
Sage knew that indulging in one last night with Henry would only prolong her healing process. She needed to stay focused on her journey ahead. As the phone lay silent, she felt a mix of relief and empowerment. She had chosen herself over the lure of the past, and she knew it was the right decision.
With her phone turned off, she closed her eyes, finding solace in the quiet of the night.
----------
As Sage stood on the driveway, her luggage neatly arranged beside her, she hailed an Uber to take her to the airport. Anticipation coursed through her veins, causing her heart to beat faster as she anxiously awaited the arrival of the car. But as the Uber approached, another vehicle pulled up beside her—a car that she knew all too well. It was Henry's car.
With a mixture of shock and confusion, Henry stepped out of his car, his gaze fixed on Sage and her bags. The realization slowly dawned on him that something significant was unfolding before his eyes.
"Sage? What's happening? Why haven't you been responding to my messages?" Henry's voice revealed a blend of concern and frustration. "Where the hell are you going?!"
Determined and resolute, Sage met his gaze with unwavering strength. Taking a deep breath to steady herself, she gathered her thoughts before responding firmly, her voice laced with determination. "Henry... it's no longer your concern."
Henry's eyes widened further, struggling to process her words and the resolve emanating from her. "But... but we need to talk, Sage. There are unresolved matters between us."
Sage let out a weary sigh, feeling the weight of their unfinished conversations. However, her Uber driver arrived just in time, lending a helping hand to load her luggage into the trunk. Despite Henry's attempt to hold onto her arm, the concerned Uber driver intervened.
"I believe she doesn't wish to engage in conversation right now. It's best to let her go," the driver said, their voice filled with empathy and concern.
Sage expressed her gratitude to the driver, acknowledging their understanding of the situation, before swiftly entering the waiting car. Ignoring Henry's pleas, she closed the door, shutting him out from her journey. With a nod to the driver, signaling her readiness to depart, the Uber began to pull away.
From the confines of the car, Sage watched Henry fade into the distance through the window, his bewildered expression fading into the distance.
----------
After a long and tiring 12-hour journey, Sage finally arrived in Shanghai. Exhausted but filled with anticipation, she made her way to the hotel room she had booked. The warm water of the shower washed away the weariness from her body, and the minty freshness of toothpaste brought a renewed sense of vitality.
Dressed in comfortable pajamas, she sank into the softness of the bed, feeling the weight of the day slowly fade away. The room enveloped her in a peaceful embrace, offering a moment of respite before the grand adventure that awaited her in Tibet.
As she closed her eyes, a serene smile played on her lips. In just two days, she would embark on her journey to the mountains, where she hoped to find solace and strength. But for now, she relished in the tranquility of the hotel room, cherishing this time of calm and preparation before the challenge ahead.
As the morning sun filtered through the window, Sage reluctantly woke from her slumber, dreading the reality that awaited her. With a heavy heart, she reached for her phone and absentmindedly scrolled through her social media feed. What she saw hit her like a wave of sorrow.
There, amidst the stories and posts, were glimpses of Henry's seemingly carefree life without her. Pictures of him surrounded by friends, laughter, and an endless stream of girls. They appeared to be living in a world where their shared memories had faded into insignificance.
Tears welled up in Sage's eyes as she gazed at those images, feeling the ache in her chest grow. It pained her to witness how effortlessly he moved on, as if their time together meant nothing. Each photo seemed to silently taunt her, whispering, "If you don't want to talk, fine, it's your loss."
The weight of those visuals became too much to bear, and Sage set her phone aside, allowing her tears to flow freely. It was a necessary release, a moment to acknowledge the pain and grant herself permission to heal. Deep down, she understood that dwelling on the images that showcased a life without her would only hinder her own growth.
Taking a deep breath, Sage made a conscious decision to let go of those haunting images. She wiped away her tears, determined to shift her focus back to the forthcoming adventure that awaited her.
------
In the evening, Sage reunited with her friends at a cozy skewer joint, where laughter and the aroma of delicious food filled the air. As they sat around the table, skewers in hand and glasses of beer before them, the conversation shifted towards Sage's upcoming journey. Her friends listened intently, eager to hear about her adventure to the mountains.
Curiosity sparked in their eyes as they noticed the subtle signs of Sage's emotional struggle. Her puffy eyes couldn't escape their notice. Concerned, they gently probed, asking about her well-being. With each sip of beer, Sage found herself opening up, confessing the pain and hurt caused by Henry's actions.
Her friends, true to their nature, responded with warmth and understanding. They shared anecdotes and wisdom from the old philosophers, injecting humor and wit into the conversation. Slowly but surely, Sage's laughter began to replace the heaviness that had burdened her heart.
"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step... and a whole lot of snacks. Seriously, climbing Everest is like a marathon for your taste buds. So, pack those trail mix packets, energy bars, and maybe even a secret stash of chocolate. Remember, conquering the world's tallest mountain is impressive, but conquering it with a bag full of snacks? Now that's legendary!" one of them said.
"In climbing Everest, remember: Fall down seven times, stand up eight... and then take a selfie to prove you survived the fall and still look fabulous!". another said.
Amidst the laughter, one of Sage's friends jokingly scolded the person who shared the witty twist. "Hey, hey! Let's not tempt fate here! Falling down on Everest is like trying to dance with a Yeti. We want Sage to conquer the mountain, not become its personal acrobat!" The group erupted in laughter, realizing the importance of keeping the journey safe while still enjoying the humor.
Amidst the camaraderie, they captured moments of their reunion with photographs that exuded a genuine sense of friendship and support. The pictures showcased their shared enjoyment of delicious food, clinking glasses in toasts, and a joyful group picture that radiated positivity.
----------
As Henry scrolled through his social media feed, he stumbled upon a series of pictures that caught his attention. It was Sage, surrounded by friends, indulging in a delicious barbecue feast and sharing laughter. They explored the ancient structures of the city, their smiles genuine and carefree.
Something tugged at Henry's heart as he witnessed Sage's joyful moments frozen in those images. It wasn't about showing off or seeking attention; it was simply Sage embracing life and finding happiness in the simplest of moments.
And then, a realization hit him like a bolt of lightning. He now knew she had gone to Shanghai. The pieces started falling into place. The unanswered messages, her sudden departure—all made sense now.
A mix of emotions surged within Henry as he looked at those pictures. He felt a pang of regret for not realizing sooner, for not being there when she needed him. Yet, at the same time, a glimmer of hope flickered in his heart.
Seeing Sage genuinely enjoying herself without him made him question what he had let slip away. Regret mingled with a glimmer of hope, stirring emotions he had tried to bury.
For a brief moment, he allowed himself to imagine what it would be like to be a part of that scene, laughing and creating memories alongside Sage. And at that moment, he felt a pang of regret for the choices he had made and the connection he had let go.
----------
"40 days huh..." Della says, embracing Sage tightly before she enters the control station and begins her climb towards the train boarding area.
"Yes..." Sage responds, her voice tinged with nervousness. She takes a deep breath, preparing herself mentally for the train journey from Shanghai to Tibet.
"Take care of yourself, and come back, come back well!" Della says, her own anxiety evident in her voice. The gravity of the Everest expedition was not lost on either of them.
Sage nods, her determination shining through. "I will, Della. I'll give it my all and come back stronger than ever."
As Sage bids farewell to her friends, they each offer words of encouragement and heartfelt goodbyes. They share a mix of excitement and concern for her daring adventure. One of their friends was capturing the moment for his social media story, bidding Sage good luck on his posts.
Days later, as fate would have it, Henry stumbles upon the story on his own social media feed.
He watches intently as Sage enters the control station, her determined figure gradually disappearing from sight as she makes her way toward the train. A surge of concern washes over Henry, realizing the enormity of the Everest expedition and the risks involved.
Without hesitation, he springs into action, fumbling for his phone and dialing Sage's number. The phone rings, and each passing second feels like an eternity as his mind races with all the worst-case scenarios.
"Come on, pick up," Henry mutters under his breath, his heart pounding in his chest. He envisions avalanches, treacherous slopes, and unpredictable weather, each fear fueling his urgency to reach her.
But as the call goes unanswered, a sense of helplessness sets in, and the unpredictable nature of Everest gnaws at his thoughts.
----------
Sage stirred from her nap, feeling refreshed after the 5-hour journey on the comfortable first-class seat of the Bullet train that her friends had booked for her. As she arrived in Beijing, she wasted no time and made her way to the airport hotel. Exhaustion washed over her, and all she desired was a good night's sleep.
Ignoring Henry's incessant calls, Sage disconnected from the outside world and surrendered herself to the blissful embrace of slumber. The weariness from her travels had caught up with her, and she knew she needed to recharge for the adventures that awaited her in Tibet.
Wrapped in the solitude of her hotel room, she drifted off into a deep sleep, letting go of the worries and distractions that had consumed her in recent days. Tomorrow would bring a new chapter, and Sage was determined to face it with renewed strength and determination.
In the morning, still feeling groggy and half-asleep, Sage made her way to the airport lounge to have breakfast before her flight to Tibet. Absentmindedly, she answered an incoming call without checking the caller ID, not realizing it was Henry on the line.
As she approached the lounge entrance, handing her lounge pass to the hosts, the sound of Henry's voice suddenly jolted her awake. His scolding tone pierced through the haze of her fatigue, catching her off guard.
Sage winced, her head throbbing with a dull ache. She struggled to gather her thoughts and make sense of his scolding words. She knew she needed to address the situation, but at this moment, her hunger and weariness took precedence.
"Hey, Henry," she replied, her voice laced with drowsiness and a hint of annoyance. "I just woke up and I've got a pounding headache. Can we talk later? I'm about to have breakfast and catch my flight."
On the other side of the line, Henry, sitting in his apartment in London, clutched his head in frustration as Sage abruptly ended the call. He sighed deeply, feeling a mix of disappointment and concern. The sudden disconnection left him with a lingering sense of unease, unsure of how to navigate the situation.
Throughout the day, Henry tried reaching out to Sage multiple times, but each attempt was met with silence. Texts, calls, and voicemails went unanswered, further fueling his frustration. It seemed that Sage had made up her mind to thoroughly ignore him.
With the early morning light casting a soft glow, Sage boarded the flight to Lhasa, her mind still clouded with sleep. The grogginess clung to her, a reminder of the hurried morning and the countless thoughts swirling in her head. As she settled into her seat, she glanced at her phone, noticing missed calls from Henry. However, the anticipation of the journey to Tibet consumed her thoughts, and she made a conscious decision to delay any conversation until later. The hum of the aircraft and the promise of a new adventure lulled her into a state of tranquility, as she drifted into a light slumber, leaving Henry's call unanswered and the day unfolding before her.
--------
As Sage's group huddled together, discussing their route up the mountain and making important decisions, her phone suddenly rang again, breaking the concentration in the room. Absentmindedly, she answered the call, not expecting it to be anyone significant. But as she heard Henry's voice on the other end, a mixture of curiosity and apprehension swept over her.
Excusing herself from the group, Sage stepped away to find a quieter spot for their long-awaited discussion. The surroundings blurred as her focus shifted to the conversation at hand. It was a moment she had anticipated, the chance to finally address the unresolved issues between them.
"Have you lost your mind?" Henry's voice reverberated through the phone, a mix of concern and frustration evident in his tone.
Sage took a moment to collect herself, her voice steady as she responded, "Crazy? I assure you, Henry, I'm as sane as ever. Now, what's the matter?"
His words carried a weight of worry and accusation as he fired back, "You're seriously climbing Everest because of our break-up? Are you trying to put yourself in danger? Or seeking revenge? Or maybe you just want my attention? Well, congratulations, you've certainly got it now! But this is madness! Come back immediately!"
Sage couldn't help but let out a small chuckle, her voice laced with a touch of wit, "Wow, Henry, not everything I do is a ploy to get your attention. Trust me, the world doesn't revolve around you." There was a brief silence before Henry responded, his voice softer, "I still worry about you, Sage. I don't want anything bad to happen."
Sage could feel her resolve wavering as Henry's concern seeped through the phone. She took a deep breath, reminding herself of her newfound strength. "Well, whatever happens, it's really not your problem anymore, Henry. So don't worry, love. See you in 40 days, or perhaps sooner if luck is on my side... or if I manage to survive," she added with a teasing lilt in her voice. "At least for the next month or so, you won't have to endure my supposed annoyance," she quipped, lightening the moment with a touch of humor.
"Bye," Sage said playfully, letting a mischievous tone color her voice before ending the call and powering off her phone. She knew that once the climb began, communication would be a challenge, and she wanted to embrace the adventure without the distractions of technology. With a smirk on her face, she imagined Henry's reaction when he realized she would be out of reach for a while.
A/N: Alright people, I have not written in a long time, but I hope you enjoyed this one! I will be making some changes, because I probably made some mistakes here and there. I will make the next part in a while.

Ironically, had I been invited, I wouldn’t have been driven to write this report. Private PR companies seeking to control access to information and public debate on behalf of the government about projects as consequential as the MBSD is dangerous — and is part of a larger concerning trend.
A growing number of these PR and consultancy companies work for clients seeking permits as well as the agencies responsible for issuing them, offering a one-stop-shop for expediting permits, with a team of communication specialists, consultants, engineers, and lobbyists at the ready. Two scoping hearings I attending this year held by the U.S. Coast Guard for floating LNG projects off Grande Isle, Louisiana, were moderated by third-party contractors who offer permit expediting services for industry.
Despite the region’s shrinking wetlands, the government continues to permit new LNG export facilities on the Gulf Coast, and is encouraging hydrogen and carbon capture sequestration developments, though they too will lead to further land loss. Such developments require new pipelines, and constructing pipelines in the wetlands is one of the main drivers of the state’s land-loss crisis.
Thirty miles south of New Orleans is where the MBSD construction will take place. A break will be made on the West Bank of the Mississippi River levee in Plaquemines Parish to allow for controlled releases of the river’s freshwater, laden with sediment and nutrients, through a two-mile-long concrete channel with a gate system re-connecting the river’s flow to the Barataria Basin.
The project’s supporters assert diverting the river to its historic path and unleashing the power of nature will result in the creation of 21 square miles of new submerged land in the basin’s wetlands over the next 50 years. This new land will create a natural barrier that will help protect the New Orleans metro area from storm surge, project proponents say. But scientist point out that the modern Mississippi River isn’t the same as it was 100 years ago — its land-building sediment load has been degraded due to the manmade water controls, and nutrient concentrations in the water are much higher. The project’s planners acknowledge that when the polluted river water is introduced into the basin’s brackish saltwater environment, increased initial land loss will occur as fresh water kills some of the marsh grass that holds the land together; however, a study determined that the land loss could be more substantial than the modelling for the project reflects.
The diversion project lies at the intersection of two crises: the state’s alarming coastal land-loss rate and the essential threat of climate change. This makes it ripe for disaster capitalism, a phrase Naomi Klein coined in her book “The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism.” Following a destabilizing event, funding is made available with little debate for projects the public is told that will fix or mitigate issues that actually advance corporate interests.
...
In an op-ed about disaster capitalism, Klein pointed out that some of the same companies that profited off the Iraq war — Bechtel, Fluor, Halliburton, CH2M Hill, and Parsons — also profited in New Orleans after Katrina. CH2M Hill, now owned by Jacobs, is playing a role in the diversion project, as one of the many firms contracted by the CPRA. Those same companies, some of which have new names after being acquired, are all now also positioned play a role in the hydrogen and CCS market — an unsubstantiated climate solution that is being heavily unwritten with public funds. With billions on the table to combat the state’s land-loss crisis from restoration settlements funds from the BP oil spill, and billions more from the federal government to combat climate change, the disaster capitalist vultures are circling. Attending the groundbreaking offered me a peek at those utilizing a revolving door between public and private sector jobs allowing them access to the loot. Among the couple hundred attendees were government officials and an army of consultants, lobbyists, and PR specialist who service the oil and gas industry, at the ready to claim a piece of the pie.
...
The Environmental Impact Study prepared on behalf of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers by GEC, a firm that offers engineering and consulting services, states that while there would be a positive impact of decreasing storm-related surge for communities in the greater New Orleans area, it would create increased flooding for communities directly south of the project in lower Plaquemines Parish that are home to minority populations. The report also concluded that the project will create economic hardship for those in the fishing industry who rely on the Barataria Basin, one of the country’s most productive estuaries. This is because the polluted fresh water entering the salt water environment will kill off most of the brown shrimp and oysters, as well as most of the Bottlenose dolphin that live there.

How Inventory Management Services Optimize Shipping Company Operations
Tumblr media
In the perplexing world of worldwide commerce, shipping companies play a crucial role in guaranteeing products reach their expected goals quickly and securely. However, behind the scenes, a covered-up legend works energetically to organize the consistent stream of products—the Inventory management services. These unsung champions have a transformative effect on shipping company operations, moving them into a period of unparalleled proficiency and client fulfillment. In this article, we dig into how stock administration administrations are revolutionizing the operations of shipping companies, revealing the significant role they play in streamlining stock levels, minimizing abundance stock, and guaranteeing convenient conveyances.
Streamlining Stock Levels: The Key to Easy Coordinations
The spine of any successful shipping operation may be a well-balanced stock. Typically, inventory management services rise as the directing light. They give shipping companies a real-time view of their stock over different areas and courses, permitting ideal stock administration. By analyzing chronicled information and current request designs, these administrations offer assistance to shipping companies in fine-tuning their stock levels, diminishing the chance of overstock circumstances and guaranteeing that items are accessible when and where they are required.
Minimizing Overabundance Stock: A Win-Win for Costs and Client Satisfaction
Overabundance stock isn't a capacity challenge; it's a monetary burden. Here's where inventory management step in with a strategic approach. By closely checking request vacillations and deal patterns, these administrations empower shipping companies to preserve leaner inventories without compromising on assembly client needs. This deciphers into decreased capacity costs and a progressed cash stream, all while guaranteeing that clients get their orders instantly. The result? A win-win situation where shipping companies spare on overhead costs while keeping clients enchanted.
Opportune Conveyances: The Crown Gem of Customer Fulfillment
Within the fast-paced domain of shipping, each miniature tallies. Inventory management services prepares shipping companies with the tools to ace the art of opportune conveyances. By synchronizing stock levels with arrangements, these administrations guarantee that items are dispatched expeditiously, minimizing the chance of stockouts and delays. The swell impact is evident—a boost in client fulfillment and dependability as orders arrive on time each time.
Operational Proficiency: The Orchestra of Stock Administration

Tanoan Relations With Other Regions
General: All regions have access to a research lab-station (known as the Inter-Regional Research Lab) where they send a research team of their own selection (usually averages to about 15-20 people max) under a mutually discussed schedule (similar to researchers on the ISS)-here they can conduct research on local flora and fauna and can look into the geological and dimensional components of the island to better understand mirage islands
Kanto-Johto/Sekiei: Research treaties are the bare minimum due to prolonged strained relationships between the Indigo League and Nat, the league wanting jurisdiction the likes of what they have with the Sevii Islands; individual basis is fine, and those with affiliation to the Dragon's Den and/or the Blackthorn Clan have a larger pool of permissions surrounding the dragon cave
Hoenn: A bit more leniency in regards to operations, there's designated dig sites and shore research sites that are under supervision of Tanoan authorities; Draconid people enjoy the same liberties as the Dragon's Den folk if not more
Sinnoh: Due to Sinnoh's own long winding history involving distortions and dimensional rifts, more often than not researchers from the region are present year round specifically working on dimensional research ; certain branches of interpol the likes of Looker and Anabel can also be found working with the island's security sector
Unova: Despite Nat originally being a Unovan citizen, the region has similar permissions as  the Sekiei region; the only notable difference is that there's an outreach program in place for disenfranchised Unovan youth, particularly drawing in those of the Tanoan diaspora
Kalos: Similar as Sekiei and Unova, however there are special interpol permissions in place due to a shared goal in investigating and dismantling the Cult of Drakoboros
Alola: By far has the most liberties, also has access to the dimensional research lab as Sinnoh does; the two regions are under an alliance similar to what the two island chains had in ancient times under a name of the Mahina Lā Conventions; those with Alolan citizenship for over 5 years with census record of being of Tanoan descent (traceable by family name) are eligible for a homestead on Tano as long as they adhered to code (ex: don't damage the land, only natural resources to build/no industrial feats)
Galar: Also has few permissions like Unova and Sekiei, however due to the region's focus on battling as a spectacle they are allowed permission on the island's off season to use the battlefields for cold-season training
Paldea: While incredibly strict, there is permission to conduct research on Tano's Interior due to the similarities with Area Zero-only small teams authorized by Tanoan authority are permitted for such expeditions and must have very specific credentials such as clearance for Area Zero research; Paldean citizens of over 10 years with census record of Tanoan heritage are also eligible for land, and there are many programs to boost interest in cross-heritage appreciation such as dance and art festivals

Building and Rebuilding
On the post-flood central Occident, new cultures in Incarien, and underwater developments.
Corobel started turn 18 with 17 points: 9 (roll) + 3 (nonhoarding) + 5 (left over)
Corobel starts turn 19 with 21 points: 4 (roll) + 17 (left over)
Command Avatar (-1): In the wake of the Great Flood, chaos stalks the land. Cults thrive. Some menace the lunar passage, or the Secret below, or the temples of great Azimuth. The Two Stars grant the fearsome Sun-Diver warrior Qaheb, who survived the expedition and the flood, an immortal mission to guard the holy places. He bears the terrible sword Decision, which is a sliver of the razor-sharp present. His countenance is the white-freckled blue of twilight; pink-gold butterfly’s wings grace his back. His company is the Evenguard, who patrol the blood-red swamps and ruined towns rooting out bandits, rogue calyptra, and the myriad indecently proportioned shapes that menace travel.
The blood does not rot, for it is not permitted to die; nor will the earth admit it, so foul it is. Only inconstant water will dilute it, and so it perdures in attenuated pools of unnatural red, still bright as if fresh-taken from a living artery, but thin as iron-fouled water. In these, the sun will not show his face, nor will any happy visage be perceived—all reflections frown in horror, whatever the expression of the face itself.
Other than that, it’s a pretty chill place, sort of picturesquely post-apocalyptic. The flowery and vivacious life of the Occident springs eternal, if somewhat strangely. The survivors want to reclaim and improve the ruined land, but this will be the work of generations. Azimuth still stands, somewhat reduced, and the blow in the rest of the continent is more spiritual than material.
Command Avatar (-1): The House of Faces, with the inspiration of the ever-changing moon, builds an insurance policy against Kilkanaqa—hidden chambers in which souls can be regrown from pruned-off thoughts and memories implanted in an unconscious host. These slowly warp the host’s mind into an (imperfect) facsimile of that of the original donor. If the worst happens, the House’s highest echelons will be restored from backup.
Command Avatar (-1): The Oracles instigate the construction of the Temple of the Charism on the hill above the Nak valley where the Prophetic Twins are supposed to have received their vocation.
Command Civilization (-3): The socially marginal, the pioneers, the runaway slaves of the coastal Lunar civilizations disperse into the continental interior, forming hardy civilizations of nomadic herders and stubbornly independent farmers. These are the Pale Hosts. They ride moon-adapted mvao and silvery reptilian creatures, braving terrible storms of regolith and the punitive expeditions of the coastwise kingdoms. Often seen in more civilized regions as merchants and mercenaries, they are recognizable by their distinctive customs and pallid dress.
Command Civilization (-3): Around the Isthmus of Incarien, human/Sun-Diver kingdoms grow in power and wealth. Their culture is vibrant, fusing ideas and aesthetics from both sides of the continent, and half a dozen major states war intermittently. The richest is proud Vayak, of the thousand bolts of cloth, so called because that, at one point, was its price. In its palace, there is a great menagerie, where the trapped souls of executed criminals (small, furry, scurrying creatures) are denied the polar solace of Laneth. Its legendary founder, Ulam, supposedly came from the Nak ten generations before the pilgrimage of the Prophetic Twins.
Command Civilization (-3): Near the Gulf of Azmit, trading emporia traffic the goods of the northern regions, the Glass Steppe, and the more developed regions of Incarien, even as they fend off (or buy off) periodic incursions from western nomads. The markets offer fur, ivory, amber, ice keener and stronger than steel, the golden frost-rime of frozen souls, sky-flowers, slaves. The land is dotted with chiefdoms, only some of whom control emporia; the marginal, especially, are eager to pledge themselves to a slow parade of steppe hegemons as convenience demands. The greatest emporium is Olavern, of the Amber Citadel. Its doughty oarsmen brave the breadth of the Sea of Isles, and the priests of the great church are given to obscure contemplative rituals involving amber, glass, ice, candles, whale-fat, burning pine. Popular fancy imputes to it the sin of cannibalism, brought home in the empty holds of ill-fated northern expeditions.
Command Avatar to Found City (-1): The False-Fire Trance of Evening, bolder than his fellows in seeking the solace of icy depths, founds a new city on the edge of the Abyss, planning to dive further after various arcane preparations. His polymorphic retinue, Aphotic drones and overseers and servant-broods, settles into the muck and builds. The silt itself, and the luminous microbiota within, seem drawn to the great deep, streaming among the rooftops like gently glowing waterfalls. The fauna of the deepest places—endless forms, most terrible—flits the lightless streets. This is Barathron, the Poised. Its streets flirt with the great depths, subaquatic shanties looming, aurora-shadowed, in piles above the yawning fathoms. Its inhabitants are drawn to flights of fancy, to self-destructive longing, and to that final and most vertiginous fall. Some say they see lights in the deep. All feel the awful gravity of night; and, when they sicken or grow old, many simply float away, avoiding a mundane and natural death in favor of one infinitely more sublime.
Command Civilization (-3): Aphotics gradually begin to disperse beyond the control of the Fires, forming independent bands and villages nestled in the coral and kelp of the shallows.
5 points remain.

Earlier this month, Russia’s State Duma and Federation Council passed a new military conscription law. The bill, approved on an expedited basis, was designed to close the remaining loopholes that until then permitted the most determined of draft-dodgers to escape military duty. The new law enables the Defense Ministry to distribute digital summonses, also restricting the draft evaders’ ability to leave the country. Russia is now set to develop a unified digital register containing comprehensive personal data on every male citizen subject to military duty. Observers were quick to call the new system a “digital gulag,” but government officials greeted the new data project with enthusiasm, not least thanks to its gargantuan anticipated budget. Meduza’s correspondents Andrey Pertsev and Svetlana Reiter investigate who will benefit from building a new digital system of mass control.
Russia’s Ministry of Digital Development is undertaking a new task, thanks to the new conscription law requiring the creation of a unified information system for comprehensive data on every male citizen subject to military duty. The data, it’s expected, will be at the Defense Ministry’s fingertips during the regular seasonal conscription drives, as well as in the event of possible mass mobilization.
An informed source in the government, as well as a second speaker in the telecommunications sector, both told Meduza that Rostelecom, the Digital Development Ministry’s largest data systems contractor, is bruited to be tasked with the new government data project.
Two government insiders were able to further tell Meduza that the Rostelecom subsidiary RT Labs will be directly responsible for building the military conscription register. On April 11, when the new conscription law was passed by legislators, RT Labs was quick to post a number of new jobs available in the company, including, for instance, a data engineer position specifically mentioning work on the state bureaucracy website Gosuslugi (“State Services”). Under the new law, this website has a critical new function of distributing electronic draft summonses via its built-in messaging system.
RT Labs already services Gosuslugi and other state data systems, as well as the Unified Identification and Authentication System (“ESIA”) used by a number of branches of the digital state bureaucracy. RT Labs’ motto, “State Services R Us,” is quite clear about its role in government data systems.
The present CEO of RT Labs, Tengiz Alania, joined the company after serving as the deputy director of Moscow’s Regional Center for Information and Communication Technologies, another data-management enterprise servicing the government. Another top executive still working at the center, Evgeny Kovnatsky, shares a full name with someone who had been in charge of Donbas Post, a postal service started by the Russia-sponsored separatist governments in Ukraine back in 2015.
Another major player in the creation of the conscription register is Maksut Shadayev, the former RT Labs CEO and now Russia’s Minister of Digital Development. Shadayev’s career trajectory included a stint as an advisor to Vladimir Putin’s Deputy Chief of Staff Sergey Kiriyenko, and later a stretch of working at Rostelecom. When appointed minister in 2020, Shadayev championed the Gosuslugi Stop Coronavirus QR-code verification program. Early in his appointment, he also proposed giving the state law-enforcement and security apparatus complete access to Russian citizens’ personal data. (Later, he denied having ever suggested this, claiming others had misunderstood him.)
A government insider who spoke with Meduza told us that federal officials led by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and his deputy, Dmitry Chernyshenko, greeted the idea of a unified conscription register with “great enthusiasm.” It was Mishustin, after all, who had digitized Russia’s tax service prior to being appointed prime minister. During a closed meeting within the Presidential Administration, Mishustin and Chernyshenko assured the Defense Ministry that the comprehensive register the military wanted could be created in practice. “Of course we can! We’d be happy to make it,” they said there and then.
This eagerness, the same speaker tells us, can hardly be separated from the truly gargantuan budget reputed to be allocated for the new data project. This is likely to be “tens of billions or rubles,” he says. Forbes Russia also estimates that the project will cost “billions of rubles” (that is, hundreds of millions of U.S. dollars).
A telecom industry insider who spoke with Meduza believes the contract is going to be a major “headache” for Shadayev and his team. “The deadlines are unreal, and the responsibility is huge. The FSB is overseeing all the work, but if the deadline is broken, they’ll just blame the Digital Development Ministry and Rostelecom,” he says. (Shadayev himself had said that the earliest the new system could be expected to go live would be the fall 2023 conscription drive.)
Despite the hasty adoption of the new conscription law, the Kremlin insiders who spoke with Meduza still disclaim any knowledge of any high-level talk about another round of mobilization. At the same time, mobilization and mandatory conscription appear to be the only way to achieving the Defense Ministry’s recruitment goals, particularly if its plan really is to recruit 400,000 men, as reported by Bloomberg back in March.
A government insider in one of Russia’s largest regions explains that the Kremlin is still hopeful about recruiting enough contract soldiers to avoid a new round of mobilization. “We have ads and banners everywhere,” he says, adding that “the task” is to “maximally motivate” men to join the army.
An informed source close to the Putin administration says that around 10,000 contract servicemen were recruited since last winter in the Moscow region alone. “People keep coming in,” he said, adding: “The draft offices see 200–300 people coming in on their own, every day. They come for the money.”
