speaking of college boys, what do the college au aot babies study??

Okay, okay, I think I’ve talked about this in an ask before but I can’t find it 😭😭 but it’s okay, I love college aus, so I’ll talk about it again! Plus, now I’ve got more thoughts for more characters, so here we go

Levi — neuroscience and psychology of human behavior

He started out on track to do a bachelor of arts in psychology, but when they touched on the anatomy and biological parts of it during his first year lecture, he switched to a bachelor of science.

The focus is still psychology, but through a more clinical lens. Essentially, he gets the best of both worlds this way. He’s intuitive and analytical, so clinical and mental diagnosis is easy to dissect for him. He’s also canonically good at math, so the calculus and stats parts aren’t too bad, either.

This major also leaves him with a few options post-grad, which is a nice bonus for him. He’s likely going to medical school, but that’s not the only route open to him: law school, therapy, lab work, medicine and pharmacy, even teaching are all viable options without going to grad school.

Do not talk to him about Freud unless you wanna get punted off a building.

Be careful with him, because with a single glance he’s already got scarily accurate predictions about your parental and emotional attachment styles, your behavior in social settings, and the onset (or seemingly lack thereof) of your frontal lobe development.

He thinks he’s so smart making comments like, “I see those synaptic connections aren’t working so well for you today,” like mf come here let me lobotomize you and see how well your synaptic connects are working after that🙄

Eren — general health sciences

He’s interested in science and the discovery aspects of it, but picking a specific field of focus right now feels too final. He likes it this way, because his schedule and requirements are less restrictive, and he has more room to find out what really interests him.

He does best when he’s doing something he loves, so picking a major with a bunch of reqs that he couldn’t care less about would have sucked big time for him. It also would have affected his grades. There are still some classes he has to take that he’s not fond of (see: chemistry), but that’s to be expected. Science in general is cool to him and he hopes to make his own discovery some day, even if it’s microscopic.

He also plays a lot of sports, keeping his schedule flexible is important. The sports end up helping him excel academically, which is a nice bonus. Honestly, Eren uses his time at university to learn more about himself than anything, so having control and freedom to do what he likes the majority of the time was important to him.

He uses his elective credits to take philosophy or history courses of his interest, or maybe even a course that you’re in just to spend time with you. He also uses you as a live model for his homework bye, congrats on being patient number one to him.

Armin — astronomy and physics

He’s still interested in marine biology, but unless he attended a school near a coast, or with a specialized integrated program for that, it’s unlikely he’d major in it during undergrad.

Space and ocean exploration aren’t all that different. Both are vast, largely unexplored domains that reel-in Armin’s interest for discovery. So, while studying astronomy, he still gets to study evolution and make his own predictions about what could be out there because there’s so much to know.

Physics comes with the territory of learning about planetary science, and he’s mathematically inclined, so it works out for him. Learning about the different physical properties of other planets and space masses is honestly pretty sick to him. Because math isn’t a struggle, he actually considered aeronautical engineering, but he didn’t want to be a part of the college to military pipeline; that is, he didn’t want any potential design of his to be weaponized.

He still gets to study animal biology through his elective courses, and might even find a few focused on marine animals to satiate him. Plant and cell biology are also of interest to him, and are just further applications of his primary study anyway, so he’s got plenty of room to work with.

This boy is interning at NASA and still, with his whole chest out is like, “I don’t need to discover a new planet, you’re my whole world.” Armin, go check on the Mars rover or something please.

Mikasa — anthropology + minor in japanese language studies

Anthropology is virtually interdisciplinary in nature, and Mikasa is a pretty well rounded student, so she’s able to excel in a program like this. She gets to study history, science, cultural studies, and even a bit of art all at once.

She’s still debating between going to law school vs med school, so anthro this is a good in-betweener. She gets a taste of science through her anatomy and kin courses; and lots of practice with reading and dissecting texts through the historical and cultural lectures. So, when the time comes to decide, she’ll have some experience with both.

Don’t know whether it’s confirmed that she’s (part) Japanese or not, but either way I headcanon that she speaks/spoke some second language at home. She wanted to delve more into it, and courses were offered at the university so why not?

Cultural studies courses end up being her favorite. She likes learning about the history of people and their cultures, and it encourages her to learn more about her own family history and culture. It also propels her to apply for a study abroad opportunity, so she spends at least one semester doing an exchange program and absolutely loves it.

She would also encourage you to apply and go, too. You guys might not be in the same program, but if there’s an applicable program in the same country she’s going to, then she’d definitely want you to apply. Spending the semester away with you would be a dream come true.

Hange — bioengineering + minor in political philosophy and law

It’s almost self-sabotage to be in an engineering program and have a minor; the coursework for engineering alone is backbreaking, and bioengineering has the added weight of human intricacies, but of course Hange makes it possible.

They’re nothing short of a genius, so of course they have time to work a completely unrelated minor into their schedule. It doesn’t surprise anyone that they go on to complete an MD-PhD after undergrad. Insane.

Bioengineering is essentially the synthesis of chemical engineering and health sciences; Hange spends their time exploring biological sciences and applies the engineering aspects of their coursework to their understanding of (and interest in creating) medicine. Truly a one of a kind mind.

They also have an interest in philosophy and justice, so when they found out they only needed a measly nine or ten courses to minor in, they went for it, of course. In honesty, they don’t find the studies all that opposing: both law making and medicine making both have some kind of philosophy or method to them in their eyes.

Hange has... little to no free time pls. They don’t mind it, because they love their coursework, but this means you are essentially ducking into their labs or scrambling to find them in-between their classes during your time in undergrad. They appreciate every second spent with you tho, and will gladly rope you into long discussions about their work.

Jean — biochemistry + minor in art sustainability

He was undeclared his first year, and took a little bit of everything: art, science, history, anthropology, english. Basically, anything that fit into his schedule. It was hard for him to pick one thing—he liked the science and lab applications of STEM courses, but not the math; and the obvious painting and creativity of art, but hated the pretentious air about art history.

What he wants to do is make a difference, which is how he ends up knowing that he wants to go to med school after, so he picks a science-heavy major, but uses his elective spaces to take art courses. When he mixes the two, he ends up on sustainability—and the complexities about it that are applicable to both science and art are what really reels him in.

Interdisciplinary studies end up being his forte. He can approach sustainability from a science perspective which impacts his art style and materials; and tuning into his creative side allows him to think about science not just from a purely clinical perspective, but from a human one, too—patients are people after all.

He believes that everything is connected somehow, even things as seemingly opposite as art and biochemistry. And he works towards finding the unique intersection where everything overlaps. His studies are pretty cool, and he’s very passionate about them, so ask him about it 😌

The art he makes is pretty sick, too, and often commentary about science; he’s proving they’re not so opposite. You also heavily influence his studies in both areas: caring about you so much inspires him to take the healthcare focus seriously, and your very nature is inspiration to his art.

Sasha — nursing

She’s friendly and good at working with people, so nursing was an easy choice for her. She accredits most of her motivation to being around her younger family members, and learns that she finds a simple kind of joy in helping to take care of others.

She struggles a bit her first year when it’s mostly all grades and standardized testing, but when she starts getting clinical experience and working in the hospital on campus, things round out for her.

Patient care is her strongest point. A lot of people often forget that knowing everything isn’t everything; if you don’t know how to calm or even just talk to your patient, you’re not that great of a healthcare professional.

Pretty certain that she wants to work with kids in the future, but she’s open to public health and even being a travel nurse if she finds opportunity there!

Of course, she’s pretty doting when it comes to you and all her friends. She might want to go into pediatrics, but the basics of nursing and health care extend to everyone, so you’re guaranteed to be well taken care of with Sasha around. You might even have to switch roles and take care of her sometimes, because her coursework can get pretty out of hand.

Connie — computer engineering with a focus on game design

He might not look it, but Connie has a brain under that shaved head of his. Computer engineering is cool to him because he basically learns about how simple things he uses every day (ie: phone, computer, microwave) works.

Systems and coding are actually the easy part for him, especially when they get into the application of it and aren’t just stuck looking at examples. That’s how he gets into game design.

The part about math and electricity and magnetic fields… well let’s just say he needed to make friends with someone who likes math and hardware his first year to get through it. But the struggle was worth it, because by his junior year he’s found a professor willing to mentor/supervise him as he works on his game and other projects, so life is good.

His school work is definitely hard, which is why the lives by the mantra of “work hard, party harder.” It’s only fair.

He makes you a little avatar so you can test out his games for him <33 best boyfriend things <33 He’d also… build a game about your relationship. Every level is a different date you guys went on, and he definitely includes something cheesy, like “There are unlimited lives because I love you forever babe <3”

Porco — kinesiology + maybe mechanical engineering

He’s pretty into athletics and working out, but didn’t wanna go down the sports psychology route; he wanted something that left him with a few more options, so he ended up in kinesiology.

He was surprisingly pretty good at biology in high school, so something stem-oriented works out in his favor, and it turns out he’s pretty damn good at anatomy, too. He’ll probably end up in physical therapy after graduation.

He’s also got a knack for cars, which is where the engineering comes in, but he doesn’t care so much for the math part of it (he doesn’t care for it at all actually, fuck that); he just wants the hands on experience of building/fixing things and working with his hands. So, if he can get a minor in it and not struggle through 4 years of math, then he’d do that. If not, he’d take a few workshop-like classes.

Because he wants to go into physical therapy, you are essentially his practice patient. Your back hurts? Not a problem, he’s basically a professional masseuse. Muscle aches? He’s got a remedy and understanding of why it’s happening. Don’t let him catch you hunting over your desk grinding away at your homework, because he will poke your neck and correct your posture (he’ll also massage your shoulders, but after the scolding).

Pieck — classics + minor in philosophy

Ancient studies interest her, but more than that, the language of ancient Greek and Roman culture fascinates her, so classics is the way to go.

Because her focus within Classics ends up being Greek and Latin language studies, she is essentially learning both languages at the same time. She gets farther with Latin that she does with Greek. For whatever reason, the former comes almost naturally to her, so her written and translated work is more complex in Latin.

However, she finds cultural studies relation to Greece more interesting than that of Rome, so it’s a give and take with both; better at languages for Roman studies, better at culture and history for Greek studies.

Her minor is a natural evolution from her primary coursework. Ancient Romans and Greeks set the foundation for a lot of modern day philosophy, so it comes up in her major classes, but she wanted to delve further into the philosophy, and not just look at it historically, so she takes more courses to fulfill the minor.

Can be found laying on a blanket in the quad on a hot day, with her books spread out all around her, highlighter in hand as she works through her reading. You’re always invited to sit with her, and more often than not, it ends up with Pieck’s head in your lap, a book in her hands, and your own schoolwork in yours as you both read in each other’s company.

Bertholdt — computer science and coding

He’s level headed, good at planning, and above all, patient, so he’s cut out for this. He doesn’t consider himself to be particularly creative, which is why he doesn’t pick a speciality with lots of design; but he’s good at streamlining and ideas to life.

The patience really comes in when his code doesn’t run. It’s frustrating to scroll for two hours just to find out that the issue is a missing semi-colon in line 273 that he overlooked, but Berty will sit there until he finds it.

He’s also good at fixing issues. That’s not limited to issues in the code itself; it can mean finding shorter ways to produce the same function or loop, or integrating new aspects into existing code.

Also, he’d just be so cute, coding away on his computer. Just imagine: Berty working on his homework in the library, he’s got his signature crewneck + collared shirt look going for him, his blue-light glasses, a cup of coffee nearly as tall as him sitting at the corner of his desk. Adorable.

He’d make little codes/programs for you, too, even if it’s silly. A simple code that helps you decide what to eat for dinner or where to go on a date, one that shuffles different reminders for you, hell he’ll even forgo the torture of design engineering just to build you a little robot that says “I love you” to you.

Reiner — english + minor in justice & political philosophy

Everyone expects Reiner, star quarterback of the university’s rugby team, to be a business student or communications student; but no, he’s an English major, and he loves it.

Just imagine a guy as huge as Reiner absolutely manhandling someone on the field, just to show up in his lectures with a tiny paperback of The Great Gatsby tucked between his fingers with his reading glasses on. It’s so precious.

He’s always running a bit late to class—either coming from the gym, or practice, or oversleeping from exhaustion—but he’s so sweet to his professors and genuinely interested in the literature that they don’t give him a hard time about it. They can tell that balancing school and sports is difficult, and they just appreciate that he takes his studies seriously.

Yeah he’s in a book club and he dog-ears his books. What about it. They’re doing poetry this month and Reiner actually likes Edgar Allen Poe. Who said jocks can’t be sentimental.

He also reads a lot outside of his classes, and has a soft spot for coming of age stories. He usually empathizes with the main character somehow. His ideal weekend plans after a week of grueling games and essays is taking a long, relaxing shower at your place, while you both share a bottle of wine, and maybe even get you to read a chapter or two of his current book out loud to him.

Annie — clinical psychology/neuroscience

Almost scarily analytical and methodic, so this major was calling her name. Localizing brain legions is… insanely intuitive to her it’s incredible. She’ll be an insanely impressive doctor someday, even if she doesn’t end up working with patients directly.

She doesn’t care too much for the more philosophical/reading heavy parts of psychology. Even experiments and research closer to the social end of the spectrum aren’t all that interesting to her; but the brain science behind it it.

Nobody should be good at cellular biology. Nobody should be able to ace cell bio and neuro and calc and work towards their thesis proposal in the same semester, but Annie proves it’s possible.

Ends up working in one of her professor’s labs by her junior year. She was offered three TA positions working with first year students, but she swiftly turned them down. Teaching isn’t her thing.

She doesn’t bring up her studies to you unprompted, but if you ask her about them she’ll explain it to you. Her notes are color coded and it’s super neat, and very cute; coloring them is somewhat relaxing for her. She usually saves the coloring part for when you guys study together; there’s extra comfort in doing it with you around.

Herd Immunity and the Anthropocene

When is getting an infection actually a good or a bad thing? Let’s start by talking about herd immunity. What exactly is it, and why have we been hearing about it so much during the Covid-19 pandemic?

Herd immunity, as described by the CDC, is a situation in which a sufficient proportion of a population is immune to an infectious disease (through vaccination and/or prior illness) to make its spread from person to person unlikely. When a group has a high enough percentage of immunity in its population, transmission becomes increasingly difficult for a disease to spread to even the more immunocompromised members of the community.

Although, herd immunity is obtained at different levels of community immunity depending on the disease. Some highly infectious diseases, such as measles, require about 94% herd immunity to stop community spread. According to the Mayo Clinic, about 70% of the US population would need to have immunity from Covid to stop our current pandemic.

So how do we even get herd immunity? Well, we can achieve herd immunity through two different methods. The first method is infection. Herd immunity can be achieved by having a large amount of the population getting the virus naturally. The downside of this method is that the population has to get sick and recover. Depending on the disease, short or long-term side effects or mortality rate can be very detrimental to the population.

Germs have most likely existed for around 3.5 billion years (the age of the oldest living organisms, bacteria). Modern humans have only been around for about 130,000 years. Humans have only been around for a fraction of the time diseases have, but they are both a part of nature. However, in response to their presence, humans have developed immune systems that have been a part of a back and forth protecting us from harmful germs. Terrestrial vertebrates such as humans have complex immune systems that have evolved to protect them from new immunological dangers. Getting sick is a part of life. Diseases have always been a part of nature, and that is especially true of the current time period, the Anthropocene. The Anthropocene is the current geologic age where humans have a substantial effect on their environment. During this time period, the way we interact with nature through contributing to climate change, deforestation, and urbanized lifestyles has increased the likelihood of pandemic-like illnesses to sweep over our communities. Deforestation causes loss of habitat; and with loss of habitat animals will be forced to come into contact with animals they originally wouldn’t have, including humans. This increases the chance for germs to spread to new hosts. Climate change and urbanization are also causing organisms to live closer together, allowing for diseases to spread more easily through communities. So, while diseases are a part of life and nature, occasionally there is one germ that can come around and have a profound effect on society.

I remember the news stories when NYC was first getting taken over by Covid. Medical personnel lacking PPE, hospitals overflowing, using ice trucks to store the deceased, and exhausted nurses and doctors. All of that resulted in just 22% herd immunity. At 22% herd immunity most of the population of NYC is still susceptible to Covid. If natural infection was the only way forward, so many more of NYC’s citizens would die or become severely ill. However, because this happened NYC was quick to understand the importance of instituting mitigating measures to slow the spread of the disease. Andrew Cuomo, the governor of New York, is similar to Rand Paul in that he is in a position that he can implement policies. When Andrew Cuomo, governor of New York, saw what was happening in his state, he used his ability to implement policies to follow scientific guidance surrounding closures, social distancing, masks, etc. As a result, the rates in NYC decreased. Not because of herd immunity, but because of serious measures against Covid. If we look at a different state, such as Florida, that did not take measures against Covid seriously, there were consecutive days in the state where they were having 10,000 to 15,000 new cases a day. This lacking approach to Covid caused thousands of preventable deaths. Even after months of lockdown the US is not close to herd immunity. All of the preventable deaths and long-term health complications that I’m seeing in people are going to continue with the natural spread. This is why the global race for a vaccine is so important.

The second method of reaching herd immunity is through vaccinations. By developing a vaccine for an infectious disease, we are able to reach herd immunity without having to subject our population, community, and families to the side effects and overall awful experience of falling ill. By using widespread vaccinations, we can also protect our most vulnerable members of society, like our loved ones in an older or younger age range, immunocompromised individuals, or those with allergic reactions making them unable to receive vaccines. Herd immunity is a good thing. When we have a disease like Covid, however, natural infection will cause crippling long-term effects in what were healthy people, and hundreds of thousands of preventable deaths. This is why herd immunity is good, but it depends on the method used to obtain it.

Immunity is an important part of preventing diseases in my home. Herd immunity helps me protect my family, friends, and people I come across every day. When paired with vaccines, I am able to protect more people in my community. I have a small child in my home, and older family members who I come into regular contact with. My family (my herd) and I get our vaccines and flu shots every year to help protect those more immunologically vulnerable members of our family. By doing this, my herd is creating a mutually benefiting environment where our personal actions protect those around us. The actions that we take to protect our family also protect the members of our communities and your herd too.

Humans are a part of nature, and so are diseases. Individual actions have a larger inter-connected effect on surrounding environments and society. The same thing could be said about the Covid virus spreading through the country. Society as a whole needs to develop a larger scope of thinking about how the actions of individuals affect the environment and planet. The factors I mentioned earlier, climate change, deforestation, and urbanization, are keeping steady and increasing. If these continue as they are currently, we can expect more pandemic-like diseases in our future. And when it happens, society will have to come together again to figure out the best way of adopting herd immunity to combat the disease.

As for my advice for the rest of this year, think critically, look at scientific data, vaccinations work, and in the words of Mr. Rogers, “Real strength has to do with helping others.”

The War on Used Games

Once we prepare for the coming wave of next generation systems, we should be anticipating improvements on all the good stuff we associate with the current crop of systems. Moving forward we expect: better graphics, faster processors, more fascinating games, you get the idea. But not everything that we're anticipating will be a progressive movement for gaming. At least, as far as Sony and Microsoft are concerned, you can wave goodbye to playing used games on their systems. Although these are simply rumors at this point, it wouldn't be surprising if they came to fruition. It's very plausible, especially when taking into consideration that a few game publishers have already fired shots at the used game market. Most notable is Electronic Arts(EA), who grew to be the first publisher to institute the practice of charging gamers, who bought used games, a charge to access codes that come with the game. To elaborate, Downloadable Content(DLC) codes are included with new copies of a certain game and only with those codes, can that content be accessed. EA expanded its project to provide playing used games online. Gamers would now have to pay $10, in addition to the cost of the used game they will purchased, in order to have access to the online components of their game. Ubisoft has since followed suit, requiring an internet pass for its games as well. You can identify the games which require an online pass as they uncovered the, "Uplay Passport", logo on the box. Ubisoft decided they'd take things a step further and additionally implement Digital Rights Management, a practice more often associated with DVD or CD anti-piracy efforts. Assassins Creed 2 was the first game to be effected by this practice. In order to play the PC version with Assassins Creed 2, gamers are required to create an account with Ubisoft and remain logged into that bank account in order to play the game. This means that if you lose your internet connection, the game will automatically pause and try to improve the connection. However , if you're unfortunate enough to be unable to reconnect to the internet you'll have to continue from your last rescued game; losing any progress you may have made since then. This will be the case for all of Ubisoft's PC titles, irrespective of one playing single-player or multi-player. While Digital Rights Management has been used to combat DVD and DVD piracy for quite some time now, this will mark the first time it's been used for a video game. In light of Ubisoft's guidelines of DRM, Matthew Humphries of Geek. com, cautions that it's feasible that eventually even console activities will require online registration in order to play them. So what's the reason for all of this? According to According to Denis Dyack, the top of Silicon Knights, the sale of used games is cannibalizing the profit of the primary performance market. He also claims that the used game market is somehow causing the price of new games to go up. His proposed solution is to move away from physical disks and embrace digital distribution. Essentially he'd wish to see services like Steam or EA's Origin replace traditional hard copies. There are even rumors that X-Box 720 will embrace the exclusive use of digital downloads and not use disks at all. Whether Ms will actually follow through with that plan remains to be seen. One could argue that Sony has already laid the bottom work for preventing used games from functioning on their future system. At the very least, they've already made quite hard work to make used games significantly less desirable. Kath Brice, of Gamesindustry. biz, reported that the latest SOCOM sport for PSP, SOCOM: U. S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 3, will require customers who purchase a made use of copy to pay an addition $20 dollars to receive a code for online play. I'd like to see a few quantifiable evidence to support the claim that used games are in fact hurting the sales of new games in any respect. Without some actual facts, it sounds to me like a whole lot to do about nothing. Case in point, within day Modern Warfare 3 sold 6. 5 million copies, grossing $400 million dollars in sales. Proper me if I'm wrong but you haven't heard Infinity Ward complaining about the used game market therefore affecting their bottom line. That's likely because they're too busy counting their money earned by constructing games that people actually want to play. Imagine that. Maybe the problem isn't that used games have a negative impact on that sale of new games but, the problem is instead that game developers need to make better games that people are willing to pay full price for. In my opinion, not every game is worth $60 simply because it's the suggested retail price. Considering things objectively, not every game is created equally, therefore not every game is worthy of costing $60. Whether it's since that particular game failed to meet expectations and live up to the hype or because it lacks any sort of replay benefits. It's ludicrous to argue that gamers should pay top dollar for every game especially when they all too often end up horrible disappointments, like Ninja Gadian 3, or they're riddled with glitches like Skyrim. I know that the War on Used Games is nothing more than a money grab by developers, upset that they're helpless to cash in on a very lucrative market. To put it in dollars and cents, in 2009 GameStop reported nearly $2. 5 million dollars in revenue from the sale of used consoles and used games. And not an individual red cent of that profit reaches the pockets of game publishers. Greed as the motivating factor for any declaration of War on Used Games is transparent. Especially when you consider that when GameStop began separating ones own revenue from new games and used games in their financial statements, EA thereafter instituted their $10 dollar fee for used games. In the absence of empirical evidence, I'll have to settle for anecdotal. I'll employ myself as an example. I'm planning to purchase a used copy of Ninja Gaidan 2 . I've never been a giant fan of the series. I didn't play the first one because I didn't have an Xbox and when it was an Xbox exclusive. And I never played the original version. Needless to say, I was never clamoring to play Ninja Gaidan 2 . However the innovation in the second incarnation of the game, which allows you to disembowel your enemies, is enough of a novelty that I'd like to play through it at some point. I can buy it today, used, for about 10 dollars. If it was only being sold at full price I would more than likely pass on playing the idea altogether or maybe rent it. My point is that game developers are not losing money because of used video game titles; you can't miss money you weren't going to receive anyway. They're simply not getting money they weren't visiting get to begin with. Unless you have a significant amount of disposable income and a considerable amount of free time, you're probably enjoy me and you prioritize which games you plan to purchase and how much you're willing to pay for them. You decide which often games are must haves and which games you'd like to play but are willing to wait for a price drop in advance of getting them. Then there are the games which you're interested in, but they tend to fall through the cracks because they really are not all that high on your radar and you'll maybe pick them up several months later, or even years when their release, if you ever pick them up at all. I find it ironic that the looming death of the applied game market could likely spell the demise of GameStop who, ironically, push their customers to help pre-order new games and purchase them at full price. One would think that game publishers would be appreciative about this product and not detest GameStop and treat used games with such scorn. Pre-orders not only help promote your games but they function as a forecast of potential sales as well. Even Dave Thier, a contributor with regard to Forbes Online, who describes GameStop as, "a parasitic bloodsucker that doesn't do much besides mark in place discs and sit in the mall", recognizes the folly of passing the burden of the used game sector onto the consumer. I've only once pre-ordered a game myself. At the behest of J. Agamemnon, I pre-ordered Battlefield 3, which is ironically a property of EA. I paid full price for this game and was happy to do it. In large part because I was granted access to several weapons and maps that I would have must wait to download had I not pre-ordered it. I propose that instead of punishing gamers for hoping save their hard earned cash, the gaming industry needs to learn to incentivize gamers into wanting to pony up to that will $60 dollar price tag. I titled this article The War on Used Games in an effort to be tongue-in-cheek in addition to poke fun at how whenever the government declares war on drugs or terror or whatever it usually is, they only succeed in exacerbating the problem. It should come as no surprise seeing as how the government tends to take probably the most asinine approach possible trying to "solve" problems. The end result is always the same; precious time and resources are wasted, along with the issue is that much worse than it was before they intervened. If the gaming industry does indeed drop this path; they'll only hurt themselves in the long run, fail to share in the revenue they so greedily covet and worst of all, hurt their customers, who keep the gaming industry abreast with currency. It's very ironic and actually very fitting that it's EA who are spearheading the effort to attack the used game market right after they themselves are one of the largest beneficiaries of used games. Chipsworld MD Don McCabe, told GamesIndustry. biz that EA has what he referred to as a "franchise software house" in that they "upgrade their labels; FIFA, Madden; all of these are effectively the same title upgraded each year. And people trade in last year's for this purpose year's. " He went onto say that those titles are the ones which are most often traded with. Shutting down the used games market effectively destroys a tried and true method in which fans of EA's franchises keep up-to-date with each of EA's annual releases. Aside from nostalgia, what would be the point of keeping FIFA 11, when FIFA 12 is right around the corner? Don McCabe, an executive at Chipsworld, teaches that, "consumers won't prosper under this new system, as copies of the game will lose their reselling value". He goes on to say that retailers will "just readjust [the price] bearing in mind you must buy the voucher. " The CEO of SwapGame cautions that "customers who trade in for cash and credit do so to acquire new games they could otherwise not afford. " This means that ultimately it will be the founder who ends up losing money because when retailers adjust their prices to reflect the increase in charge for used games, the resale value of the game will drop and new games are not as likely to be purchased.

The short answer is I don’t know. The long answer is that it’s complicated and there’s something I need to confess after this break:

I am not a medical researcher. My actual current “job” is... a medical student. As in, I’m in med school. Trying to get an MD degree and use it for a career. The truth is that I started posting Guiding Light during, like, my second week in med school. The entire time I’ve been plodding along, trying to keep my regular upload schedule, I’ve been attending classes and studying for a variety of exams.

Why did I never mention it? I honestly thought that, given my health issues, I’d wind up pulling out after one semester. Buuuut that didn’t end up happening. I’m now at a point where it makes more sense for me to finish the degree, despite (and because of) my ongoing health issues. See, I’m American, and have to deal with the American health insurance system. Without insurance, it would cost me well over $100,000 a year to manage my conditions. But high-ranking health care professionals like doctors frequently have very good insurance plans. With my student health plan, for example, I typically only have to pay about $500 a year for assorted medications, doctor visits, and chemo infusions. I’m not willing to take the risk of moving out of the medical field and finding out my insurance isn’t good enough to cover my health care costs enough for me to live comfortably with whatever salary I put in.

“But, wait, Amby. Isn’t med school expensive? How can you afford things like art commissions if you’re a student?” you say. A lot of it came down to luck and I’m not comfortable discussing it publicly. If you’re really curious, you can DM me, I guess. But I digress.

Even now, there’s a voice in my head telling me fic-writing just isn’t do able for someone in my position. The counterargument that I always use is the popular nuzlocke comic Myths of Unova, which ran from 2011-2017. The creator, kylee/kynimdraws is an MD/Ph.D. student — which typically requires 7-8 years of school, whereas MD students attend for four years — and worked on the comic while working toward her degree. She’s also heavily involved in the Korean Overwatch League.

The problem for me was that I didn’t know how to pace myself properly. At first, I would write about 1000 words every day, typically before my classes started. But when the second year began, things changed. The amount of material I had to go through left me too physically and mentally exhausted to sit down and write. I just wanted to do mindless things like watch TV.

It’s really my fault. I didn’t expect the fic to get much in the way of attention, but I also thought the best way to get feedback was to A) offer comments on other people’s stories, and B) keep a regular update schedule. The former worked pretty well for Serebii, while the latter led to people noticing the fic on FFN.

I don’t know the ages of most of my readers. But because second year sapped so much of my time and energy, I wound up in a position where I couldn’t keep writing and follow all the fics I was following. I really wanted to finish Guiding Light, so I focused my attention on it. As a result, there are a lot of fics by talented authors — a few of whom gave me advice earlier on that really helped me improve — that I just couldn’t keep up with anymore. I’d tag them all, but I don’t want to shock them out of nowhere. Many of them are around my age and also busy themselves. Hence, I understand why they can’t read my stuff, either. I just feel guilty about all of it.

When the FFN version gained more attention, I honestly felt pressured to keep updating and to try and force myself to write. I figured the people reading were younger (as in, still in school) and, if I didn’t update, they’d go find another fic to look at. I think I even said this before, but one of the reasons I started the blog was in the hopes that it’d spur my writing efforts, but the results were... mixed. And this was all before I got extremely sick in April/May and gave myself a stress ulcer.

It’s also part of why I ask people to comment on the story. In school, I rarely get any feedback unless I screw something up. My self-esteem sucked to begin with, so it’s hard to stay motivated and keep up with my coursework when there isn’t any positive reinforcement. And I expect that to get worse when I move into my clinical work starting in January.

It’s also why I’m desperate to finish drafting the fic this year. Not because of Gen VIII, but because once I move into the clinic, I will have a lot less time on my hands. It will be very difficult for me to keep up you guys, even through something like Discord. The fact that I’m drafting the final episode is definitely helping my motivation, but feedback and comments from others are undeniably a good source of positive reinforcement for any artist. Even a sentence or two can make someone’s day.

So, as for what the future holds, I really don’t know. I’d like to write other things, but that’s going to depend a lot on what my life looks like in 2020 and beyond. I wish I could’ve found the courage to join the fanfic community at a younger age, instead of silently reading. But I didn’t. If I do write anything beyond the end of Guiding Light, it will be smaller-scale pieces. Fewer battles. Shorter battles. Fluffy pieces. Quiet moments between characters. Maybe some silly stuff. I don’t really know. We’ll see what happens.

In the meantime, my big hope is that I can end the fic in a way that makes you all happy. I had a range of ending options planned, but finally settled on one a few months back. I’m very worried it will be poorly-received, which is why I’m doing the best I can with these chapters.

Publicly, he went from being the troubled youth who’d tried, though admittedly not very hard, to blow up his primary school, to being the prodigy with the bright future of scientific discovery ahead of him, but privately, the eventual creation of the Hulk only brought forth what he’d always known he was - a monster, just like dear old Dad.

Whether he was on the run or working in the lab with Tony Stark, that knowledge had always been at the back of his mind, and it was what eventually sent him back on the road. After Sokovia, he couldn’t bring himself to stay with the Avengers, couldn’t just be another liability. His decision was borne out when he heard about the Sokovia Accords - and, more specifically, the general that would now be responsible for leading his friends. There was no way he was putting the Other Guy in the hands of Thaddeus Ross. But at the same time, he still doubted he could do any good for those of his friends that were taking a stand against the Accords. Revolutionaries needed a Hulk almost as much as they needed a physicist. Maybe less.

But he couldn’t stay away. He’d never been very good at turning away from someone who could make him forget, even just for a little while, that he was the real monster, the Doctor Frankenstein to the beast with the stitches and bolts. He was always going to be drawn back.

How I broke into design

“Why haven’t you done your maths homework?!” That’s what I’d be asked most evenings during my formative years, when I’d rather create new Transformer characters, or design new Nike Air shoes. The ability to create something from nothing and then give it personality and style was what captivated me.

During the last years of secondary school, my art teacher would let me skip other classes so I could perfect my sketching and design skills.

Thanks to being the youngest of three children (and thus being a master manipulator), I always had an excuse ready for when other teachers would ask why I’d missed their lesson.

My grades across all subjects were slightly above average, apart from Art & Design, where I excelled and would transform into a miserable brat if I ever achieved anything under an A grade. On one particular day, pupils were invited to meet a careers advisor who would help us choose the right path when going out into the big wide world. I was ushered into a small room and met by a very bland looking middle-aged man, with a dull grey suit and a tone of voice to match. To me, my path into design was clear so I didn’t expect much help. Despite hearing my obvious enthusiasm, he dismissed my life ambition as quickly as he could roll his eyes. He told me – with absolute certainty – that I’d be wasting my time pursuing design as there weren’t any jobs or money to be made in the industry. He and other influential figures in my life proclaimed that I should follow my Sister, who excelled at all things academic, and become a manager at a leading bank in London.

And just like that, my entire career had been decided for me.

I decided (with rose-tinted glasses on) that I could make money in a standard business role and fulfil my creative dreams during my evenings and weekends. Oh, how naive I was.

I secured my first job as a production coordinator at a food and beverage trading company overlooking Tower Bridge. On my first day, I arrived wearing an ill-fitting grey suit and a carrier bag containing a just-ham sandwich and a grey umbrella. My careers advisor would’ve been so proud.

It became clear pretty quickly that there was no future for me in this industry. Any idea of fulfilling my creative dreams during my evenings and weekends were dashed by a job that drained my creative juices and demanded late nights to meet deadlines. The final nail in the coffin came when the MD would regularly send me away to a tiny, dark room alone to gather samples of citric acid which could be used to clean his yacht.

My time wasn’t completed wasted though. Not that it didn’t feel like it at the time, especially when I was being made to earn my stripes through some excessive delegation from senior colleagues who spent their afternoons in the pub. But thanks to a good work ethic and actively seeking advice from mentors, I climbed the ranks and became a manager soon enough.

Whilst I was busy wondering what education I was missing at university, I developed important, real-life skills in the workplace, where it mattered. Managing and motivating colleagues, building relationships, meeting deadlines within set budgets and problem solving helped build the foundations for running my own business later down the line.

Despite the promotion, I remained unfulfilled and I decided that my job would have to suffer in order to achieve my dream. I enrolled at the London College of Communication and took a series of courses in the evenings that would span across 3 years.

My eyes were opened immediately as I stepped through the university doors. Incredible designs, created by students, adorned the walls and provided me with a huge sense of inspiration and purpose.

I met other students in a similar position to my own, who wanted to escape other careers and venture towards something creative. We shared a drive stronger than many students who take the 3 year degree in graphic design; each of us had experienced an unfulfilling career and were desperate for change.

It was during these classes that I learned the fundamentals and principles of good design. I’ll forever be thankful to the amazing lecturers, particularly to Paul Chamberlain for his seemingly unending wealth of knowledge and his willingness to share it, both in the lecture hall and in the pub.

One of my finest moments as a designer (even to this day) came during the end of year exhibition, where the best designs throughout the year were showcased to the university and public. I was shocked to find my poster layout promoting the London Olympics given a feature, receiving praise from some respected figures at the university. My work was now adorning the same halls that had so inspired me when I began the course three years prior.

That sense of achievement and pride was nothing I’d felt before; I wanted more of it!

I gave in my notice (a bit too proudly) and quit my role in food and beverage distribution and looked to the future with excitement and eagle-eyed focus.

I deleted my very corporate CV designed in Microsoft Word and set about creating a CV and portfolio that would attract a creative director. Whilst some recruiters were confused and possibly put off by my unconventional career path, I landed a role in production and design at a leading promotional merchandise company in Shoreditch.

It felt like I’d been adopted by a family rather than enduring the standard awkward greetings on a new employee’s first day. This friendly, outgoing and ambitious team, coupled with a creative role gave me unbelievable satisfaction. Plus, there were wasn’t a grey suit in sight!

Starting a design job in a promotional merchandise company wasn’t a conventional route into a design career. But then, I hadn’t followed a conventional designer’s career path. However, creating artwork and managing the end-to-end process developed that sense of responsibility for managing the client’s needs. I had the opportunity to produce innovative designs and creative promotional merchandise for major clients that helped develop my role into a senior creative and management position.

“I created my own degree”

Despite being guided to a different career path and some long hours learning graphic design, I’m thankful that I went the extra mile to achieve my dream. It wasn’t the conventional or recommended path. In a sense, I created my own degree through learning key soft-skills in the workplace during the day, whilst mastering graphic design in the evenings and weekends.

The common advice is to encourage young designers to enrol at university, which I wouldn’t argue with. My point is that there are other ways to be successful in design, especially in the modern age. Some of the largest global businesses are recognising that candidates with hands-on experience through online courses or similar methods can make the same impact as candidates with a degree. Google, Apple and IBM are amongst an increasing number of companies who no longer require applicants to have a degree. Having that work-place experience, becoming multi-skilled, developing people and management skills will help future proof your career in an age where gains in technology are at such a pace that great design skills alone won’t stop you from becoming obsolete.

An easier and more effective way of reaping the same benefits of my journey is to apply for an internship, whether you’re at university or not.

One incredible reward of an internship is that you have the opportunity to learn on the job, with an experienced designer to guide you. Learning by ‘doing’ is quicker, easier, for most of us and means that repeating the same skill next time isn’t as intimidating. You’ll feel a greater sense of achievement completing a real-life project and grow in confidence with every successful task. Becoming a skilled, reliable and integrated team member could even bring you paid work from that company, or at least a glowing reference.

Sometimes you don’t know how far you’ve come until you look back…at your Inbetweeners haircut whilst listening to some garage classics. The journey is different for us all, but the secret to achieving my dream was pretty simple. It just takes an open mind, a passion for creating, perseverance and above all, self-belief!

Starting from the bottom

Career Change: if you’re thinking about switching careers from an industry that seems completely untransferable, it’s not too late. You may be unaware of several skills that’ll help you in design, which may put you ahead of other candidates, such as the ability to confidently pitch to clients.

Understand Graphic Design: well duh! There are some great courses on Udemy and Skillshare at amazing prices. There are also plenty of free tutorials available on YouTube.

It’s ok to be rubbish: be prepared to be absolutely useless when starting something new. This’ll help you develop patience and appreciate the mastery you’ll pick up in the long term.

Look around you: Don’t rely solely on the internet for creative ideas. Look for inspiration everywhere you go and from everyone you meet.

Break out of your comfort zone: mastering one skill or piece of software is definitely a good thing, but getting out of your comfort zone and learning something new will develop confidence and provide more opportunities for future employment.

Get out there: the self-taught route can be a lonely experience. Join local groups and find other designers who can share experiences and skills. An accountability partner is a fantastic way to keep you motivated and on course.

Build on the relationships you already have: send a DM to your social media contacts and look for opportunities. Be friendly, whilst getting to the point.

Imposter Syndrome: most of us encounter this, normally early in our careers and especially if, like me, you haven’t followed the traditional route into design. Take a moment to appreciate what you’ve achieved, the positive feedback you’ve had and stop comparing yourself to others.

Understand User Experience (UX): as a designer, it’s important to put the customer first, by knowing how to design products with good usability and user pleasure.

Create a portfolio: To land that first role in design, you won’t get anywhere without a portfolio. Display only your best work, explain the challenges you encountered and the process of how you reached the final design. Proof-read the portfolio and covering letter and ask someone else to check it as well.

Free work: A very controversial topic, of which there are many opinions. I believe that whilst you’re starting out and developing a portfolio, it’s OK to offer cheap or even free work. However, make it clear to the client that you’ll be charging your standard rate for future work. As you start to show your worth and your demand rises, don’t undervalue yourself or your time.

Share your work: whether it’s on your own website (which we’d highly recommend), Behance, Dribbble, social media or Youtube, get your work out there. This is a great way to build followers and get seen by employers.

Give value: this may be difficult when you’re starting out, but simply sharing your process can inspire others. Rehearse this at home in advance, as this’ll help your story flow on the day and help you gain confidence in your story. You need to believe in your own work – no one else will if you don’t. It may sound obvious but make sure that everyone can see your work during the presentation – this is your time to impress. Above all, be yourself!

Sh*t happens: There will be some obstacles along the way. Clients or employers will reject your design or application. Stay calm, keep trying and learn from your experiences. Remember, design is a very personal preference and you can’t please all of the people, all of the time.

Prove it: you’ll want to promote your soft-skills within your application or interview. It’s all well and good mentioning that you’re a troubleshooter, or team-player, but this’ll mean nothing without good and relevant examples.

The promo of the new season started with the news of David appearing at Jimmy Kimmel. (X) EW announced a special 25th-anniversary, Ultimate Guide to Every Season & Film, being released 5th January. ENews published a short interview with Gillian and David, from the set of The X-files and TV Guide Magazine published a new photo of Mulder and Scully #Shouldertouching! Next was announced that Gillian will be at the late late show with James Corden, 9th January and we got a picture of David jamming with the band when Brick wished everyone a happy new year! (X) Chris Carter did a Reddit AMA, but this is something I don’t wanna talk about. He is a moron. *For all upcoming events, @justholdinghandsok has a calendar running with all the info!*

The night of My Struggle III was off to a good start, @gillianaofficial posting: Gangs all here! Tonight at 8/7c @FOXTV . 👽 Fox released a new promo just before the Premier, in which, we could see Dana Scully in bed, with bare shoulders...and as this is The X-Files fandom, for us it is an absolutely good reason to loos our minds!! So yeah, we were in a happy place😂😂 But Chris Carter was true to himself, did give us a critically claimed bad episode with a twist that was disgusting and controversial at the very least. The fandom exploded, the media was loud, but we did get one thing that was promised to us.; a lot of MSR scenes and Willaim discussions with Gillian and David more at ease. Interview with Queen Faye Wong (2001)

It’s not easy to interview The Heavenly Queen. I contacted Faye Wong’s management several times and would receive their apologies [for being unable to schedule]. After a week of frustration, our two sides negotiated a rather creative interview method: fax. I listed the questions that I wanted ask and sent it to Hong Kong. Faye Wong answered while she was taking a break. She recorded herself on an MD disk and then had it express delivered to me. Faye Wong’s greetings to readers of this newspaper were also sent by fax. And of course, she did not forget to promote her Guangzhou concert. Reporter: What have you been up to recently?

Faye Wong: I was mainly filming in Japan for the drama “Love From A Lie” for Fuji TV. The next album is also in production which has kept me busy.

Reporter: When will your new album be released?

Faye Wong: The production is nearing completion, probably around October.

Reporter: How did the last Guangzhou concert feel? What are your expectations for this time?

Faye Wong: The last Guangzhou concert was the first stop of my first mainland concert tour, so I was quite impressed. Speaking of my expectations for this concert… my expectations for a concert is always the same. I hope that I can be very emotional in the concert. I hope that the audience will follow my emotions and I hope that they can watch it very enthusiastically. In short, the input from both sides is what I look forward to most.

Reporter: You shed tears in previous concerts. In this concert, what song do you think is most likely to cause you to cry when you sing it?

Faye Wong: I haven’t thought about this. I think whether I shed tears depends entirely on the emotions at the time.

Reporter: Someone said Faye Wong has not been very “hot” in the past two years but she is still better than other singers. What do you think of this statement?

Faye Wong: First of all, I think what’s “hot” and “cold” are products of a trend! Anyway, trends are always changing! Trends will always pass, so I don’t think anyone can be “hot” forever. I think if someone has this opinion, of course they must have their own reason.

Reporter: It is said that you are a singer of the “Diva” class. Are you worried that your “heat” will cool down?

Faye Wong: This kind of thing depends on the public, the audience, and the market, so it is useless to worry or not worry about something that you cannot fully control!

Reporter: Which mainland singers and musicians do you admire? Why?

Faye Wong: There are many that I appreciate from before to now. For example, of course Zhang Yadong who has been working with me for a long time. I especially like his album “Zhang Yadong” released in 1998. I think when I’m listening to an album, I’ll judge if it’s good or not mainly on whether or not it can bring me into a mood and an atmosphere. His music can make me very engaged and create resonance, regardless of whether his thoughts when he was producing it were completely different from the thoughts I had when listening to it. As long as it can drive my emotions, it's good. I think Zhang Yadong has been very successful in this regard and he is very talented.

There is another person worth mentioning, Jin Wulin, who is working with me for the first time in my upcoming album. I didn’t pay much attention to his music before, but I like the song that he wrote for me this time and his arrangement is also very good. I hope we will collaborate more in the future.

Reporter: Your last two albums insisted on personalized music but the fan reception did not seem very enthusiastic. What do you think of this contradiction?

Faye Wong: I think you may be referring to the album “Fable”. Speaking of personalized music, in fact, our starting point when making records is not to personalize the music. I find it difficult for me to consider the business side because I don’t know how to distinguish between business and art. I just think about whether it sounds good or not. For me, this may be purely a matter of personal taste, so it is a matter of preference! The reason is not too complicated.

Of course, since it is a matter of preference, there will definitely be a contradiction between my preferences and the audience’s preferences. I have not found a good solution to this problem. If the things I like are not accepted by everyone, I really don’t know how to solve it! But I don’t want to make a record that is not based on my point of view at all, so I can’t compromise myself. It is difficult. Reporter: Speaking of the contradiction between music style and the market, will you make some changes to conform to the market?

Faye Wong: Actually, there have been some changes in the records I have made. It’s not that you can see it as clearly as in the previous album. For example, the first 5 songs and the last 5 songs in “Fable” are completely different. There are totally two different feelings. The first 5 songs were produced by Zhang Yadong and me and the last 5 songs were produced by Hong Kong producers. I think the role of the producer may be key to this kind of balance! Reporter: Do you think you are “cold” to people?

Faye Wong: Any comments I get, whether I agree or not, I have to accept it. For example, I think since they always use the word “cold” to describe me, they must have their reasons. It’s not for nothing. Maybe I really don’t smile much in public or I am not the type of person who often smiles in front of the camera. It doesn’t matter whether this is because of my personality or other reasons. The audience saw me through the media and that was their understanding. They can never fully understand me, so I don’t care. Reporter: I often see your unsmiling expression. Are you an “irritable” person?

Faye Wong: I don't think I’m an irritable person. Everyone will be like that when they are unhappy . But when I am unhappy, I don’t lose my temper easily. It may be because I don’t talk much.

Reporter: How interested are you in developing your film career?

Faye Wong: I think acting is very difficult to figure out. In terms of interest, acting and music feel completely different to me. I don’t know when I will suddenly become interested in acting. There may be a long period of time without interest at all. It is difficult to tell how this interest will come about. And I still don’t have much confidence in acting.

Reporter: Talk about your performance in the new Japanese drama.

Faye Wong: I think there are some things I am satisfied with. For example, before, I didn’t know the satisfaction that acting could bring, but I felt it when filming this Japanese drama because I participated and put forward my opinions to the director which I have never done before. Perhaps the satisfaction comes from this. Of course, looking at it as a whole, I think I’m still lacking. It’s not completely satisfactory, I can only say that some things are.

Reporter: What kind of life do you think is the happiest? Are you happy in life?

Faye Wong: In my opinion, of course, the most fundamental happiness in life does not all come from external conditions. Everyone’s happiness should be found in their own heart by finding a psychological balance and peaceful state of mind. A very peaceful state of mind will be happier, of course this is just my opinion. I think this is the only way to find true happiness. But it is very difficult to do this. It requires “cultivation”, so I think I am still cultivating now. Reporter: Does the entertainment industry bring you more troubles or more pleasure?

Faye Wong: It’s equally the same amount! No matter how much trouble there is, you will get as much pleasure. You have to work hard physically and mentally. I think it’s not just the entertainment industry. If I was not in the entertainment industry and I was doing another job, it would still be like this.

Reporter: Until when do you think you will continue to sing?

Faye Wong: I didn’t think clearly about when I’ll stop singing. I have always been a person who goes with the flow. This kind of planning is not very suitable for me, so I haven’t considered it clearly.

Reporter: What is the status of music and family in your life? What’s the weight of each?

Faye Wong: In my life, work (that is, career), family, love, children and other aspects, I never rank them. I think these things are all part of my life. I will try to coordinate them as much as possible instead of ranking. Reporter: What is your biggest feeling about marriage?

Faye Wong: The biggest feeling that marriage gives me is that it allows me to understand myself better!

Mariam Daoud’s Dove Collection

Having launched her brand only one year ago, Mariam Daoud has already succeeded in dazzling us with her creativity and the fresh, unique spirit she brings to the Egyptian haute couture market. Don’t believe us? Take a look at her stunning evening gowns. We talked to her about her latest SS19 collection and how she first started on her road to success.

When did you decide to take on fashion designing as a career?

I actually started drawing illustrations at a very early age. After school, I was searching for a fashion design school, but unfortunately I didn’t find one in Egypt so I resorted to the next best thing aligned to my dream. I graduated from the faculty of fine arts in decor of theatre, cinema and the TV department. This is when I got the chance to start designing theatre and dramatic costumes. After that, I decided to learn more about pattern making, draping, styling and embroidery through workshops and online courses so I can start my own project.

At what point did you feel you were ready to start making your own line?

After taking many courses and feeling that I’ve learned quite a lot about everything in the field. I also observed famous fashion designers to learn about their careers, how they started and what they faced and so on. I would look at Alexander McQueen, for example, Dolce and Gabbana, Balmain, and from the Middle East, Zuhair Murad. Then, making a research on the market helped me figure out what the customers need exactly, and I found the best Egyptian workers to work with, who can provide a very high quality of finishing, which can match the standard of international brands.

What is the story behind your Dove SS19 collection?

As usual, before every collection I look for a main theme. For this season, I decided to choose doves as my inspiration because I find in them freedom, purity and simplicity. This came with a limited color palette of white, black, off-white, grey and gold, but I felt that each color had a different appeal and presented different layers of beauty.

Would you describe to us your favorite pieces from the collection?

I can’t ever pick just one piece since all of them are my creations and carry my spirit. I feel like they are all my babies.

Did you face any challenges in the design process?

There is the everyday challenge to improve quality and finishing so that I can surpass customer expectations. That’s what I care about the most.

We also love your previous collection. Tell us about the theme behind it.

My FW18/19 collection is inspired by the renaissance era – an era of discoveries and creativity. For me, it represents the clever combination of romance and relevance. This collection was created to reflect the eternal beauty of a strong and individual woman who likes to appear different and unique. It’s modern, yet has a classic touch.

Where are the most random places you find inspiration?

Travel is the best way to find inspiration. Before my first collection, I had visited some places in Europe and that’s how I was inspired by the renaissance era.

What drove your decision to start designing suits for men?

I’m all about art and challenge…the first suit I designed was an artistic collaboration project, which was for the actor Sherif Hafez to wear for a photo shoot. I got very good feedback on that suit, and that’s why I decided it is not my last so stay tuned to see more in my next collection!

What are your plans for the future of your brand?

My plan is to succeed both locally and internationally. My dream is that every woman who wears MD gowns feels unique and wonderful.

How would you describe your personal everyday style?

I usually go for the casual look and pick rather comfortable pieces, as I tend to spend most of my days in the workshop monitoring all the work process and details.

Where do you see the Egyptian fashion scene in a few years?

If we continue in the same direction we’re going, I’m guessing we will establish an exceptional spot in the international fashion industry.

My name is Max, I’m twenty years old, and I’m travelling abroad to study in Spain. I’m freckly, two inches from the security blanket that is average US male height, past the weight that makes everyone around you ask if you eat anything (but not by much), and a recent recipient of the dreaded pre-important-event-bad-haircut. Short, skinny, white with a bowl cut… Ladies, please, control yourselves.

I hail from a small/medium/big coastal suburb of California. If that sounds unspecific… it is. I’m quickly learning here that everything is relative; Maybe I’m taking it too far. We’re twenty-thousand sun bleached skin sacks and rising. Kind of. The rising part, that is. Insert ramblings on size of neighboring suburbs that ends in a phrase like “moving on…”

I'm writing this on a word document in the font "Aileron" because I just realized I haven't used one single other font than Times New Roman and Calibri (by mistake, or default) since I started my first English class. Which I guess was called "Language Arts" back then, so school administrators could feel justified and annoyed parents could be vindicated in their decision to send their annoying little angels away for eight hours a day. I was less than angelic, I can tell you that. A bonus of writing in this font (to get back to the subject of this paragraph) is that it all looks ‘bold’ which gives my ramblings a (false) air of importance. Ok enough context, on to the ramblings:

“Gravity is working against me and want's to bring me down”

External forces, or just a representation of the negative forces ... <-- me starting to explain something while obviously in denial about my weird nuances Let's start over Ok, internal forces (obviously), which are negative, are acting on me constantly. It's the force that causes me to watch Netflix in my room for 10 hours in muy bonito Spain instead of perhaps going outside and exploring and talking to people and STEPPING OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE to order something from a place in Spanish (Fear fear fear fear fear fear fear fear fear fear fear of something which does not affect anyone else here who actually speaks the language).

-{ This is an afterthought I'm writing after typing the next two paragraphs: I'm basically making excuses here but I'm sure you'll see a lot of that if I write more “journals” }-

It's like my deepest anxieties (i.e. interacting with people I don't know and being judged too) that exist behind a wall of logic.

To explain better, I have certain anxietal fires that are forced to not take hold by the ease of their... function... this still doesn't make sense.

Some actions give me anxiety but because they are so simple there's no way for me to rationalize letting them stop me from doing the actions. I.e. going into a place I've never been and asking for something from someone.

-{ Another afterthought: if it was socially acceptable for me to stand rigid in front of cafe Espanola while I battled my mind for control of any motor functions then I wouldn't be in Spain right now because I'd still be standing in front of that house party five years ago, gripped with fear and soiled shorts }-

But because I'm now in a different country thousands of miles over the Atlantic (in a direction and distance I've never traveled) there's (obviously) a new language barrier. So now it's as if I can rationalize being too scared to walk into a FUCKING COFFEE SHOP with the mere fact that I don't speak the language they do. I probably shouldn't compare myself to an immigrant from Mexico but I'm gonna do it anyway; I'm aware there are stark differences in our situations. They come here and throw themselves at the will of a federal system that 1. doesn't favor them 2. is divided on whether they should even be helped 3. could quite possible make their lives agonizing ... ALL while probably not knowing a lick of that federal system (or the entire country's) language - - - we're talking about the US here. And here I am having done the same thing, thrown myself at the mercy of another country. Can't remember where that was going but it’s probably best to move on anyway. I'm sick. Or maybe I'm not. I don't know. I have a sore throat and I'm sneezing but the sneezing... anyway my throat hurts and my acid reflux is acting up, probably onset by the new diet in Spain (which keeps me fed and avoids the action of actually asking someone for food i.e. ordering it). To Maria (my house-mom), my muchasiest of gracias for these structured meals.

I'm thankful for the food.

No I'm not.

I expect it.

Of course I do, because its at the same time every day.

I'm having a fucking introspective crisis right now to be honest. And if I'm not having a crisis then I'm crazy. And if I'm not crazy then I'm lost. And if I'm not lost... fuck man I don't know. There isn’t a guidebook for this. And if there is, I don’t think I wanna know the answers.

This whole introspective journalism thing I've got going on right now is kinda interesting. By "kinda interesting" of course I mean MENTAL. I’ve created a diagram to illustrate the scale of the amount of interesting “this” is.

Speaking of which, I've been watching a lot of House, MD on Netflix and I don't know if that's helping my sanity or hurting it pero nevertheless, there's something more pressing on my mind at this very moment:

Why do I have to completely capitalize the word “ok” in word processors? Ironic that a word short for that which means stable (okay) is only correct in an all caps induced anger. That was my attempt at a joke, I think, but it got less funny the more complicated it became for me to explain. That's been another issue I've realized recently; I explain things for way too long. I was about to go into a really in depth description of how I explain things for way too long but then I realized what I was doing. This journal entry (if you can even call it that) is getting long and I have a nagging urge to still explain my way of explaining things so I'm going to end it here.
