chapter one (you're here)

A soft humming of a song unfamiliar to anyone could be heard around the computers. When Jake peeked out he noticed your presence. He had met a couple of other people in the place, but they didn't seem to hold him in high regard as unlike his brother. While he was thankful he wasn't being wheeled around in the chair to meet every scientist or military person who worked at Hell's Gate.

As he looked in your direction he noticed that you had a couple of things on your desk, unlike other adults, you looked younger, quite a bit. But another feature that set you apart from them was that you had at least three different screens on your desk, almost as if it was a control room just for you. Each one reflected different images or text. On the farthest one, he could tell you had the map of Pandora in full in company with a couple of pieces of information that he assumed as basic as he could as additional information.

“Ah, there you are. Grace informed me you were coming, Jarhead” you addressed him, without even looking at his direction. “What? Too many confusing terms for you?” you laughed a little, turning around in your chair and finally facing him.

“Jarhead? They only called me like that in the military” he laughed a little, stretching out his hand towards you. You nodded, shaking his hand for less than a second, only to go back to checking a couple of things on the screens.

“I call all the idiots like you around here that. I should call them by other names, but well” you muttered the last under your breath and he couldn't help but nod uncomprehendingly, but still, the confused smile on his face didn't leave him.

“Are you talking about the military?”

“I have worse nicknames for scientists” you assured with a forced smile, getting up from your chair and closing a couple of open tabs that were on just one of your computer screens. Soon, you guided your non-dominant arm to the vicinity of your lips.

“May 19, 2154 with lunar time of 10:17 AM, I report the presence of Jake Sully at my desk and the data I am to show him in the company of Norm Spellman before both of them officially become part of the Avatar project. Don't forget to corroborate data in…” you stopped talking and thought for a bit. “Ten hours and forty-three minutes in the company of Colonel Miles Quaritch and Head Administrator Parker Selfridge.” A small beam-which Jake could soon tell was a scanner-scanned first you and then him. He was a little surprised and smiled, cocking his head to one side.

“Do they give those to everyone?” As you walked, he followed as best he could with his chair. He seemed genuinely interested in the machine. You laugh a little and then spoke.

“No.”

You had just finished eating one of the rations that, you felt, you had just stashed away a few hours ago and you looked around, tired and with a headache that was slowly dissipating.

Honestly, you felt a little -a lot- of worry growing in your chest. From the state of the place, it had been at least more than ten years. You prayed somehow that everyone was alive, they should be. Besides that, nothing in those ruins could confirm anything about the date, the computers weren't completely broken, but they did have a couple of plants starting to grow around them. Which seemed strange to you, since there was no way for them to get in without having to wear an exo-pack. Though you were very lucky that by strange things -or by Eywa's will, according to the local natives' words- that animal had allowed you to leave.

Your watch was totally off, but at least in its place, right where you left it before Grace put you to sleep. Wow, with the time that had passed surely she had already found out about the little white lies you had delivered to the military base. Bah! for the time that had passed even your own planet must have been sure of that.

“But I guess you're happy…” you smiled teasingly, looking out the large window to where nature was peeking through. It stretched outside the glass, you also saw some small insects flying around.

After a long time of admiring your surroundings, you sighed. Which option should you take? Because the most emotional one would be to go back to Hell's Gate, but unsure about the time you've missed, you doubted if it was a reliable source right now. And even if it wasn't, it's been a good while where your information wasn't covered up by yourself, so anyone must know about you and your true identity.

“Agh… how stupid of me…” you complained, throwing your head back. “I still don't want to work besides…” you thought, turning to look at a tablet that didn't have any creepers on it. The only reason for taking a cryosleep was laziness to work during the time that Jake Sully had now decided to help the Na'vis, as you were still pretending to be part of the military's team for those times.

“I wish I'd had that idiot's problems… wanting to walk, ending up falling in love with an alien and betraying the race” you complained again, wearily, lying on the floor and staring at the ceiling. “I did the last one, though.”

Everything was still spinning around in your head. Yesterday you had hugged Grace for the last time, said goodbye to Trudy, punched Norm in the ribs, and misplaced Jake's chair. Today, you were in complete solitude in that place.

Without a destination. Not knowing what the fuck to do. Ever since you'd arrived on that moon you'd been determined to always be one step ahead of anyone, even your friends, but there was no way you could do that now, not with who knows how much time wasted. Soon, your spotlight came on and much to your dismay, you sat up, running a hand over your face.

“Nothing is impossible for me” you repeated the mantra you used to give your coworkers when you were in front of the computers, walking over to the machines. Yes, most were broken, some not so much, but they were still unusable. You pulled out the tablet of it's place, feeling your eyes light up when it turned on. Soon your face looked annoyed again, as it had no date or time.

“Is there any fucking way to know what date I'm on?” you gave the wall behind you a little kick, checking the data that was available. You seriously wondered if waking up bewildered was something all those idiots expected. Sure, the girl who thought she was the big deal for outwitting the military by waking up not knowing where, or how, or when she was.

“You'll see, Grace… I'm going to cut all your fucking braids out of your avatar when I find you” you growled, checking a couple of things. While it wasn't something as advanced as your computer or your watch, it was something you could work with for now, especially if you wanted to get out of there.

Before long, you managed to get few of the technologies in the place up and running. You had to take a bit of a breath for that, as it meant that if Hell's Gate had been taken over by the military, they could track you.

“Okay, and now the only thing I could put in any of this junk” a simple double-location. It gave exactly the same spot on the other side of the planet. A little trick you had managed to install before you went to sleep, just in case. Yes, you couldn't get ahead by a few years, but you could give yourself a boost from the past with basic things.

“Now, if I have everything correct… and if Max is still alive…” you ran your fingers over the touchpad, hoping to see at least just a single red dot on the whole big vast map.

“What's this for?” asked Max, looking at the watch you had just left on his desk.

“To combine, obviously” you smiled, as you walked out of the labs.

Yes, it hadn't been just for that. Being the most loyal, you knew perfectly well that just by knowing Max's location, you'd have a little bit of information. And what kind of person wouldn't you be if you hadn't put a tiny little tracker on him?

You smiled at the idea and soon, a couple of hours away, as reflected by the tablet, there was a blinking dot. In a recognized location.

"Yes!"

You couldn't help but take a deep breath after the happy second, hoping that the military hadn't stolen that stupid watch.

“How angry I'd be if that asshole gave it away.”

...

“Hey… guys” the female voice of one of the few humans left on Pandora caused both the Olo'eyktan of the Omaticaya, Jake Sully and his friend, Norm Spellman to turn from the maps they were reviewing to where that woman was directing them. They followed her finger to the screen.

“What's going on?” questioned Jake, adjusting his eyes to check what she was pointing at. There were two new blinking dots on the map.

"It just activated. There's another one at the same point on the other side of the moon. Do you think they're military?” observed Norm, scratching his chin a little anxiously. That would be a big problem.

"No, no. This point is next to the cloud forests, remember? If there were military they'd be dead by now or we'd have gotten the word from the nearby clans. On the other side, it's the barren areas, but there's nothing there” Jake pointed first to the first spot that activated and then moved the map, pursing his lips. The first little light was around the intimidating forest and the oldest trees in all of Pandora bred, the other was in a dead space.

"M-maybe it's just a coincidence" the only woman there smiled, trying to avoid a tense atmosphere.

But nothing in Pandora is a coincidence. And Jake knew it.

"I'll send some warriors over there. There must be something in that place”.

Dispatch has confirmed 2024’s first couple: BTS’ Jungkook and BLACKPINK’s Nari!

Every year, Korean news outlet Dispatch rings in the new year by revealing new celebrity couples to the public. Girls’ Generation’s Yoona and Lee Seung Gi, Rain and Kim Tae Hee, EXID’s Hani and JYJ’s Junsu, and fellow BLACKPINK’s Jennie and EXO’s Kai had their first reports come from Dispatch.

This year, they released photos proving that BTS’ Jungkook and BLACKPINK’s Nari have been secretly seeing each other.

According to Dispatch, Jungkook and Nari said their goodbyes to each other outside Nari’s home as Nari was flying to Paris, France for New Years and Jungkook to Nonsan Army Recruit Training Center for his military service.

Dispatch also caught the two at an ATM months before in March 2023.

Pictures have dated back to as early as January 2023 but fans allegate they’ve been dating since 2018 after person A posted a thread full of photos allegedly of Jungkook and Nari in December 2018.

Furthermore, the media outlet stated that the reason Nari’s previous dating scandal with ASTRO’s Cha Eunwoo from back in October was clearly false was due to the fact that Jungkook and Nari were dating as early as December 2018.

You and Baekhyun had always been close and even if you hadn't been in the same company you were sure you'd have become friends. Bakehyun's group Exo and your group Red Velvet debuted not too far apart and you saw one another a lot. Baekhyun was the first one in EXO you noticed because he was so funny and friendly. You'd been so nervous back then and needed a more confident personality like Baekhun to bring you out of your shell and he did that. He was the first idol you became friends with and your friendship had stayed even years later when you'd both become successful. Then it turned into something more 3 years into your relationship. You started dating BTS' Jin a few years after your debut but just shy of your 1 year anniversary, he ended things with you. You were devastated and Baekhyun was there for you...then his girlfriend broke up with him later that same week. The timing was uncanny and you wallowed in your situations together. In an odd way, it made you feel closer to Baekhyun to go through something like this with him and you definitely became closer physically. You got drunk together and bonded over your pity, one thing led to another and you slept together. You couldn't remember all of it but recalled having fun and Baekhyun was very good. He said the same of you and jokingly offered his services if you ever needed them. The two of you laughed it off but found yourself in the same position 2 weeks later. From then it just become a deal, if you were both in the mood then you hooked up. There were no strings attached and it wouldn't change your friendship...atleast that's what you said. Neither of you even wanted a relationship so this seemed like the perfect solution. Baekhyun didn't want to date again because it hadn't worked. He didn't have enough time so he figured that was just not on the cards for him. Meanwhile, you still weren't over Jin. You didn't miss him anymore but you were scared to let another guy in and the emotional scars were still there. So it should've been perfect. You had the friendship part for comfort and the physical chemistry for sex but it wasn't as carefree as either of you pretended. You recognised you had feelings for Baekhyun and your members were always urging you to tell him. "You'll get hurt if you don't" Irene would always say and you knew she was right but couldn't bring yourself to tell him. You didn't think you could face rejection from someone so close to you again and didn't want to see the pity in Baekhyun's eyes as he looked at you. You knew he didn't feel the same way because it had been 2 years now and surely he'd have said something if he wanted this to be more? You suppose, you could've said the same about yourself but you could sense something in Baekhyun that told you he didn't feel the same way. Atleast not completely. You knew he cared for you a lot and at times thought he had caught feelings but there always seemed to be something there stopping him. You felt an invisible wall between you and knew if you pushed it, he'd just build it higher. So you ignored your feelings because there were more important things happening...like Baekhyun's enlistment.

Baekhyun's military service had been looming malevolently on the horizon for a while but it was finally here. You helped Baekhyun get everything sorted and offered as much support as possible. He didn't want to say a rushed goodbye to you when he was leaving for the airport so you spent a night together and that made everything more passionate. Baekhyun made you feel things nobody else could and you loved being with him. This was very much on your mind as you lay together and you sighed "I'm going to miss you" you said honestly and Baekhyun tightened his grip on you. "I'm going to miss you too" he said "but I'll be able to text sometimes and visit...". "I know but it's not the same and I worry about you. What if you hate it?". Baekhyun chuckled "well I don't think I'm going to love it". You made a humph noise and Baekhyun smiled "but I'll be fine okay? You don't have to worry about me. I want you to live your life as normal and it goes without saying, you should find other guys to treat you like this. You don't have to wait for me, you don't owe me anything and I'd never expect you to restrain yourself". You paused because this was the closest Baekhyun had ever come to describing your relationship...and it was to tell you to hook up with other guys. "I don't mind" you told him but Baekhyun shook his head "I want you to be happy with other guys, I won't get upset. You should be with other people" and you felt your heart break a little more but you nodded "okay".   Baekhyun left for the military 2 days later and his words echoed in your head constantly. You knew he didn't have feelings for you but still, hearing it hurt. You told your members and they comforted you. "Not to be impolite but in some ways this is good" Joy said and Irene shot her a glare. "No it is! It's better you found out before he goes than you waiting 2 years only for him to tell you when he comes back. Plus out of sight really is out of mind, you won't have to see him for ages and can focus on other people". Wendy nodded "she's actually right, it'd be so much harder if you had to bump into him everywhere but you won't!". Irene and Seulgi nodded seeing the girls' point. "Plus this is good because it means you can hook up with more guys!" Yeri said "there's more to the world than Baekhyun". You smiled "it doesn't feel like it right now". "I know it doesn't but she's right" Irene said "and this time apart will show you that. So use this time to heal and have fun". You nodded "okay! I will" and vowed to use this time wisely. Fast forward to nearly 2 years later and you wanted to kick your naive self's butt! You had not used your time to hook up with tons of hot people and focus on you. You'd slept with a grand total of 2 people and one of those was your ex Jin. "Am I just incapable of making new connections? Can my brain only repeat things?" you asked your members the morning after and they laughed. "No of course not, just the familiar is less scary that's all. Plus you always said Jin was attractive so that's what this was". You agreed but didn't believe yourself. You'd kept in contact with Baekhyun the best you could during his enlistment and had called a few times. Despite everything you missed him a lot and couldn't wait for him to return. So much so that when Suho invited you to come and pick him up with him, Kai and Chanyeol you agreed. You were nervous the whole drive over and then when you saw Baekhyun you knew why no other guys had done it for you. They weren't him. Baekhyun spotted you and a big smile filled his face. You missed that smile and rushed to his with the boys. His members got to him first and then Baekhun was in front of you again. "Y/n" he smiled and opened his arms. You stepped into his hug and felt happy to be back in his arms. You went back with Exo to a small party Suho was throwing for Baekhyun with all the members and some of his friends. Baekhyun was catching you all up on everything you missed on the drive back and when he ran out of things to say the boys started chatting among themselves. "I'm really happy to see you again" Baekhyun said and you smiled "me too! I missed you". "I missed you too" he said and put a hand on your leg. Before this, you'd considered ending this friends-with-benefits deal but the second Baekhyun looked at you like that it went out the window. You disappeared together at his welcome home party and went right back into old habits not 24 hours after he'd left the military. "Wow you just really jumped back into that" Joy said when you confessed to the girls the next day. You sighed "I know but I couldn't help it. He looked at me with those big eyes of his and I was hooked". Irene sighed but Yeri shrugged "I don't see what the problem is, I think if you still want him after 2 years apart and he clearly still wants you then go for it. You're young and can settle down at any age. Have fun with the hot guy who wants you". Wendy nodded "I agree, just decide what you want this to be. If you want to date him then tell him but if you're happy for this just to be hooking up. No relationship then that's fine". The girls nodded but Irene carried on staring at you. "I won't get hurt" you told her and she sighed gently stroking your hair "if you say so". Baekhyun's members also found it funny that the night he came back he was with you and teased him about it. It started out funny but by the end Baekhyun was worried. "How does he have a girl waiting for him the second he's discharged?" Chanyeol asked "Chen only got that because he's married. The rest of us had to wait at least 48 hours, not 3!". Baekhyun laughed "guess you're just not as magnetic as me". "Oh please, you and Y/n are as old as time" Lay said and Xuimin nodded "I don't think it counts when you're basically a couple". Baekhuun paused "but we're not a couple, we're just friends with benefits". "You don't wait 2 years for your friend with benefits to get discharged" Kai said and Baekhyun looked at him "what do you mean? Y/n didn't get with anyone while I was gone?". "Not that we could tell but I mean she could've at some point" Chen pointed out. Baekhyun frowned and Suho shushed the guys "hey leave her alone, this is a good thing. Baekhyun has a girl who cares about him a lot and will always be there for him. Who cares what they define it as, they're happy together and that's all that matters". The guys nodded but Baekhyun felt jittery and anxious. He had no idea everyone considered the two of you a couple and now he thought about it he could see why. He was worried you'd gotten the wrong idea about what this was and wondered how he could correct it. Exo had a comeback a month after Baekhyun arrived back. It was a really quick turn around and Baekhyun got almost no time to readjust but he was happy to be in the new song. It turned out really well so Baekhyun was happy he did it. They were promoting it at award shows and Baekhyun was really enjoying being back...but he still had his worries about you. You weren't at the award show but Baekhyun figured there had to be something he could do to fix the situation he was in and then he spotted an idol he thought he was done with, watching him. You hadn't seen Baekhyun much because he'd been rushing to prepare for his new comeback. He'd be so busy with work and trying to get back integrated into society, see his family and friends etc. You totally got it and gave him space. He texted you last night apologising for his absence and you told him it was totally fine. You saw Exo win an award for their new song and were so proud of them all but especially Baekhyun. He'd jumped right back into work like it was nothing and you were biased but you thought he killed the latest comeback. You want to congratulate Baekyun and knew he always got home for award shows around 1 am so headed to his place with his favourite alcohol to celebrate. You were excited to see him and knocked on his door wondering how happy he'd be. 30 seconds passed and nobody opened the door so you knocked again. And then when more time went passed you wondered if Baekhyun was in. Maybe he'd stayed out longer or something. You were setting the drink down on the ground, getting ready to leave when the door opened and Baekhyun appeared. "Y/n?" he asked "what are you doing?". "I brought you something to celebrate your win...did I wake you?" you asked seeing his messy hair and how he was squinting. Baekhyun paused "aww that's so sweet thank you and erm no...". "I didn't?" you asked laughing "then why do you look so..." when someone else appeared behind him. "Where did you go?" a girl asked and you saw it was Seoyun and froze. Seoyun was Baekhyun's ex and according to pretty much everyone the love of his life. Their romance was one of the most famous in kpop history and their breakup even more so. It had been so romanticised that all fans were so sad when they broke up but always claimed they'd find each other again and it looked like they had. You of course knew Seoyun from when she did date Baekhyun and she smiled when she saw you "Y/n, is that you?". You nodded "Hi Seoyun...sorry I didn't realise you guys were...don't worry I'm leaving". Baekhyun paused "okay but I...I'll call you tomorrow?". "Sure" you said and Baekhyun went to hand you back the drink. "No keep it, you guys celebrate". "Wow are you sure?" Seoyun asked "it's a good bottle" and you nodded "sure!". "Thanks" she said wrapping an arm around Baekhyun's waist and you glanced at it without meaning to. "So goodnight!" you said and rushed off. Baekhyun closed the door feeling awful. He'd wanted to send you some sign but he didn't want it to hit you in the face like this. He saw the hurt in your eyes and it stuck with him. He cared about you and you were the last person he wanted to hurt. "You're not drinking your champagne" Seoyun said pushing his untouched glass towards him and Baekhyun shook his head "I'm not in the mood...for anything actually. Do you mind if we call a rain check?". You went back home and didn't plan on telling your members. You thought you were pathetic enough but the second Irene saw your face she knew something had happened. You burst into tears and told them all of it. "I'm such an idiot" you said while Seulgi hugged you. "No you're not" Wendy said but you shook your head. "You all told me to be careful and not get too invested but I did". "Y/n you didn't choose to fall in love with him" Joy said and you froze "I'm in love with him?". The girls looked at one another unaware you didn't know that. It made sense and you groaned "Oh God I am...and he's never stopped loving her" you cried and buried your face in your hands. The girls stayed up comforting you for several hours and expected you to be a mess the next day but you woke up before any of them and went for a run. You found when you were stressed or hurt the best thing to do was exercise because if your body was exhausted it was harder to think. So you got on the road and just kept running. You didn't pay attention to anything, hardly even traffic and just ran as far as you could until you had to stop. You struggled to sit down, your legs utterly exhausted and breathed so heavily your chest moved up and down. Despite it all you started crying, so much for your exhaustion plan. Once you'd finally calmed down you realised you didn't recognise this neighbourhood. Your phone wasn't getting any signal but there were some shops down the road. You stopped off at a cafe trying to work out where you were. You bought a Smoothie while you were there, figuring it'd be a long walk back when someone called your name. You turned to see Jin and cringed because you looked a mess and were meant to look hot when you saw ex. Jin didn't seem to care/notice though and greeted you warmly. "What are you doing all the way out here?" he asked. "Oh you know just out on a run" you laughed and Jin laughed "all the way from house?" before it clicked. Jin remembered you liked to run when you were upset "you did, didn't you?" he asked. You nodded "yeah...". Jin didn't want to pry so he just smiled "want a lift home?". It turned into dinner because Jin had to travel right afterwards and wouldn't be able to eat for a whole. You were fine with that though and took Jin to a place you really liked. You were right about how positive Jin was and he made you smile and see things with Baekhyun from a different perspective. Your life wasn't over and there were so many things to be grateful for. As if surmounted though who should walk past and see you but Baekhyun? He'd been wanting to contact you about what happened since that night but had no idea how. It was too awkward and the longer he left it the worse it seemed to become. He now thought it might be too late to contact you but then as if by magic there you were in your joint favourite restaurant...with Jin. You looked happy and kept smiling at the worldwide handsome who of course looked amazing. He had one of the most beautiful smiles in Kpop and Baekhyun felt a big burst of jealousy which surprised him. He'd always liked Jin so had no idea why he was feeling so resentful. Jikook Week 5 Complete ✔️(09-16/01/2024)

Their fifth week in the military is now complete. Jikook are nearing the end or have now completed basic training. It's time to celebrate this major milestone with a look back at this week in 2017.

The Wings Album including Blood, Sweat and Tears, was released the previous October 2016 and BTS had spent the last months of the year promoting it.

On 14th January they attended the Golden Disk Awards winning the Bonsang for Wings and the Global K-pop Artist Award.

This was also the show where BTS, EXO and Shinee were dancing to Rainism (3.44 min onwards) off stage and Jungkook was really getting into it. See 2.20 -2.30 mins of the video below for jikook antics and Jungkook athleticism.

The next day Jimin thanked everyone on Twitter.

Also this week on the 16th January BTS filmed the Idol Star Athletics Championship (ISAC) Games.

Jimin posted photos with all the members on BTS Twitter.

He also posted with JK saying, "Did you enjoy your meal? The lunch chicken is Jungkook I drew the dinner chicken"

This was the games where the audience called out that it was Jimin o'clock at 10.13 am.

Jungkook, JHope, RM and Suga came second in the 400 m relay.

Let's not mention Jin, Jimin and Tae's placement in the archery that year. Despite that I have to admit I am a sucker for Jimin with a bow.

Not sure if this was the last ISAC games they attended but ARMY legend goes that BTS were banned from the games due to their habit of spoiling content before it was released. I can't find any real evidence of that but maybe someone who was around at the time can shed more light on this.

I'm so sorry I've been trying to figure out how what Ravi did caused Kai to go in early. I think I'm missing some context. Like I totally agree that what Ravi did was awful and gross and terrible, I just don't actually understand how that caused it. And I've been trying to figure it out but I don't seem to be getting anywhere. Would you mind explaining it please?

ravi was basically the scapegoat for this huge scandal where brokers were manufacturing forms for people who wanted to postpone or be exempted from going to the military and as a result the military has been super harsh about ppl evading military service and that's definitely why kai was given 1 week notice about his enlistment date instead of being able to do his plan of having the exo comeback before he goes. it's like setting an example that even high profile celebrities can't just postpone however they want and have to serve when the government tells them to

How is EXO Kai doing in the military ?

He's all right. It's stressful in different ways than being an idol. He's a bit worried about gaining weight. He also feels some jealousy towards some other idols who he feels have preferential treatment and has more vacation or doesn't really do the stuff but then they get promoted or photos seem to imply they are doing the training. I do sense some loneliness like he's not able to be with his friends so much or do what he likes to do to destress. He also feels like he's missing on the dating scene and misses being in the spotlight. He's also a bit worried about his career like once he comes back will his career still be the same or will he just fade away?

I've answered the question of where I see SM in 5 years here <- that's from about a month ago.

My view of Baekhyun and Taemin both jumping ship is that they were overdue. It was always a question of when not if. SM has a long, prolific history of bleeding talent and abusing their idols - that company is quite literally the worst offender among the Big3 just going by the number of lawsuits filed every 3 - 5 years from idols under their management. And this is aside the fact that SM is the only major company that compels their artists to sign 10-year contracts using a legal loophole, where the industry standard is 7 years. The reason SM's known practices aren't talked about more in fact, is because SM also has the largest amount of company stans in the wider k-pop fandom who strongly influence where scrutiny is placed.

And that reason is why even if this snowballs, it won't change anything dramatically for the company, because nobody is more committed to keeping illusion of SM's legacy/prestige alive more than fans of SM groups.

That said, based on debut dates, the group next up for contract negotiations is NCT. Because most of the founding members have promoted outside Korea (the legal loophole SM uses), this means they have 10-year contracts and so they'll only begin negotiations from the latter half of this year through 2026. As some of the members are due to enlist starting this year (Taeil, Jaehyun, Doyoung and Taeyong are the four oldest Korean members), it's assumed they are speedrunning negotiations ahead of that deadline, and it could be why we've seen solo and sub-unit projects for Taeil, Taeyong, Jaehyun and Doyoung in the last year. I'm highlighting those four in contrast to a member like Mark, who is easily NCT's most prominent member (alongside Taeyong) who still doesn't have a solo EP, and it's probably just a coincidence that he's Canadian and not up for military service. And so his negotiations can happen much later. Given the state of SM's dwindling idol portfolio and how they've been handling NCT so far, I expect almost all the members to re-sign (WayV is the wild card here), but I expect more bleeding from EXO and other legacy acts.

Anyway, I'm already rambling.

Baekhyun/Taemin have been associated with SM for a decade and that's not going to change even with them leaving the company, for two reasons:

They are still signed under SM for group activities.

SM stans won't relinquish that connection no matter how hard those idols attempt to rebrand their image. Like I've been saying, most fans of SM groups are actually company stans despite what they'll tell you.

So long as the make-up of k-pop fandoms remain dominated by SM stans, nothing is changing significantly for SM in this space in the next 5 years. Their new girl group will debut to much fan fare, Taemin and Baekhyun will continue being included in conversations about SM talent and influence, and SM company norms will continue as they have like every other time a high-profile talent has left their company - just fine.

The one caveat I didn't include in my prior post (linked above) but feel compelled to include now, is that the non-compete HYBE placed on Lee Sooman in 2023, expires in 2026. Given everything I've mentioned about how SM operates and the cult-like following LSM has both with his staff and k-pop stans generally, if he establishes a competing agency in the next 5 years, that could dramatically impact the life of SM Entertainment beyond any of the expected M&A scenarios I mentioned in point 3 of my linked post.

Overall, expect more of the same but there's a chance we get more fun times ahead. :)

Apparently he applied on early august, and you know what else happened on early august their 8th anniversary in where they announced the upcoming concerts to be held on January, so all this time he was out of those plans? and for what reason? at first i thought TI's f-up triggered his decision but they weren't informed about it until mid-august.

And now there's a US interview (the only 127 member that did written interviews for US media, and idk if he's filming any interview now that he's been there for about a week or so) and he says that in about a year he sees himself releasing more good music... like??? why would he say that when it's clearly not

but then there's that fansign clip in which OP tells him about missing TY and JH telling her that he would go soon too, but I take this with a grain of salt, he might sad subtly or had he actual plans of going this early all this time and for what? he's the most popular member, he has international appeal his solo is the one doing the best in most metrics, he qas also booked with cfs, which he most likely wouldn't have got if he was enlisting this soon

Yes, looking at the schedule, to get into a band Jaehyun had to submit his application August 1st or August 7th. Plus, fans think that he returned from Thailand to Korea and then went right away to Indonesia (that weird detour after a 127 fanmeet everyone was confused about) because he had to do a health check (again, based on the dates from the military enlistment shedule).

There is information (I don't know how true), that if Jae didn't get into the band, he would have to apply again. However, he got accepted on the first try. Frankly, even if it's an option, I don't think military would pass a famous idol with a clearly good voice and handsome face. "Oh, it's so hard to get into an army band" is not about the likes of Jaehyun.

In addition, Jaehyun's whole schedule for October has been already planned. Doyoung's encore is exactly on the last days of Jaehyun being in town. Lastly, a band has limited number of places, to not miss a chance and apply in time the decision should have been made before deciding on the solo slot even. It's not like it was with Kai, when he was planning to perform with Exo, and then the military called saying his application for a 3d (?) postponement was not granted, so he had to drop all plans, beg forgivenes from the fans, and go to the base right away.

Ergo, it was planned Jae will go November 4th way ahead.

"In a year" is a common approximation when it comes to idols. It can mean 1,5 years, 2 years, in foreseeable future. It's a vague answer in an interview, not an official announcement (like with Mark's solo in February). Imagine you are promoting your first album and saying that you will release another one in 2-3 years? Fans will connect the dots. Most SM artists normally release an album every year. If Jae said "maybe in the future", fans would have attacked SM. Who is promoting themselves as a soloist with no promise of continuation?

Plus, he could have recorded an OST. And there is that collab with the guy from Emotional Oranges (Jae will feuture on his upcoming album).

Taeyong booked a new cosmetic endorsement right before he left. It aired after his enlistment. Clio has a ton of footage with Jae, it will release it bit by bit the same way it does with DoWoo. Same for Prada. Jae was its BA long enough anyway. These contracts are for a few years only.

What do you mean "And for what?". 1) for 127 to comeback as whole sooner, 2) to reunite with Doyoung sooner, 3) if it's true that the army band only accepts up to 27 y.o., than this as well.

Jae will be in a band, he will be seen by gp. It is better to release a second album and go on a tour after enlistment in Jae's case. He is not known as a soloist yet. Imagine him getting some attention in US and then dissapearing for 2 years? You think people will hold on his name? No.

Jae didn't break the wall. His MV didn't go viral (3,6mln views as of now). Album sales and streams are from his fans. They will wait for him, especially knowing what to expect from him genre vise (= wanting more and anticipating).

It's not about me being observant, it's about common sense and "giving it a thought".

You said "Jaehyun is so popular now!". So what? With whom he is popular? With 127 fans and his solo fans. GP doesn't know him, as an actor he is not known, he is a nobody on the international scale as a soloist yet. Brands bag him because he is from SM, a part of a famous group, has 15mln followers on IG, and he is very handsome. In two years (1,5 actually) it will stay the same.

All these years Jaehyun was saying he wants a holiday. And you want him to have another squirrel in a wheel year after 10 years of exactly that for fame and brand deals he doesn't crave. A year alone, without Doyoung by his side, or at least Tae, Yuta, and Haechan?

Maybe trust idols in their late 20s themselves sometimes. Enlistment is their decision, a company can't force them to do it. Normally idols go the very last minute. When they go ahead of time, it's what they want and see as the best solution.

P.S. Sorry, forgot about the concert. So yeah, it was planned without him (but with Taeil, the main vocal, i.e. 7/9). They just couldn't say it. Look at other SM groups, they performed and gave concerts with few members as well. It will be 127 day concert. I was surprised it was scheduled so far in the future, but it makes sense given the context now (not a tour, just a special day performance).
