The past 9 days have been incredibly emotionally draining as I’ve followed the situation with the US Agency for International Development (USAID). I feel sick thinking about the disastrous consequences that shutting down this agency will have. I don’t post much original content on here, but I know a little something about this and I wanted to share what’s happening and why it matters, and ask you, if you're a US citizen, to please contact your Congresspeople. Call or email them and say that you support foreign aid because it saves lives.
Recently, the Trump administration issued an executive order pausing all US foreign development assistance (1), then sent out a strict “stop work” order for existing contracts (2). (This is separate from the ostensibly rescinded halt of domestic U.S. grants) Although Secretary Rubio issued a waiver for “humanitarian aid” a few days later, there’s been huge confusion about which programs qualify, how to obtain a waiver, and the status of waiver requests (4, 5) - and some orgs who’ve received waivers still haven’t been able to access their funding (6). Now the administration appears to have plans to dramatically downsize, if not completely shutter USAID (7, 8).
Here are the reasons you should care:
Most importantly, many people will die because of this decision, including many children. Clinical trials for potentially life-saving medications have been called off, including one for experimental HIV vaccines (9). Babies will contract HIV at birth because their mothers aren’t able to access ARV therapy while USAID-funded clinics are closed (10). Manufacturers of nutrition supplements for malnourished children have been ordered to stop work, leading to a supply shortage that could kill hundreds of thousands of kids (11). Essential medicines that USAID funding has already paid for are sitting around in storage because orgs can’t get approval to distribute them (12). And those are just a few examples.
It’s illegal. USAID funds have been committed by congress. The executive branch’s job is to execute on those commitments by sending the funds. Elon Musk cannot legally block the money (13). USAID was also created by an act of congress, and Musk and the Trump administration are illegally attempting to destroy it without an act of Congress (14, 15). This completely disregards the system of checks and balances which are a central foundation of our democracy.
USAID’s activities are in the USA’s interest! Diseases don’t care about borders, so taking away funding to prevent, treat, and track diseases abroad puts us at risk of outbreaks here. The aid freeze is hindering the response to the current ebola outbreak in Uganda (16), and surveillance of bird flu has been stopped in 49 countries due to the freeze (17) even though there have been 67 human cases of bird flu in the US, and one death.
It’s disgusting that the richest man in the world is taking away lifesaving medications and preventative care from the poorest children in the world. I hope you'll take a few minutes to let your representatives know how you feel about that.

Job shenanigans man…
I’ve been temping for an international shipping company for a little over a month now. It started off with a mindless filing duty, and sprucing up graphics for a handbook (convincing IT to give me a workable photo editor was a journey on its own). The job overall isn't bad. Definitely am learning a whole new side to humans when it comes to employment. HR is a helluva department to be an administrator for. At least one of the HR ladies that I work with understands that I'd rather temp for them than be a full-time employee.
Then after about a month, I did a follow-up call with my recruiter, where she gave me some solid tips about treating my position like I'm the consultant, not so much a submissive peon. It was a little relieving to be able to tell her that I don't like this job if I can help it, which she understood, but advised that I do my best endure while the job market's thin. In all my years of employment, it was actually nice to have a mature discussion about how jobs work, and how to take ownership of my job skills.
Fast forward to today, where I've been assisting in planning a corporate event for the last couple weeks. I don’t know why my boss’s boss thought I would be a good person to assist her, when she's remoting in from Florida while I'm in Washington. Btw this event is in Georgia. Totally makes sense to give the Expat from South Korea to “secure a site and restaurants” in southern USA. Where I have never lived.
Suffice to say, this has been a consistent theme since my call with my recruiter:

Like, it's already hard enough when managing your ADHD makes your checklist look like a chutes-and-ladders game played with highlighters. All to make sure everything goes in order (cos to heck with our emotional regulation) while our squirrel-ly brains “multitask" with phone breaks as a way to cope. But then, imagine my annoyance when I found out that the normies-in-charge weren’t organized to begin with.
Izzy already reminds me enough times that people don’t think ahead, but it's still wild to me… 🤦🏻How many times have us NDs been told by normies to be more organized, thoughtful, and flexible whenever things go awry? I don’t mean to throw shade at the two people I report to, but damn…. I can only imagine how much they have to juggle while trying not to lose their own cookies. But eh, guess that’s corporate life. No time to strategize and execute — just react and get shit done 👍🏼
Despite how my inbox looks when I clock in, I'm learning a lot, and can already see how to implement improvements for future event plannings. Oddly enough, I accidentally found “enjoyment” in problem solving in this area, but the key thing is communication, which is hard to speak up on while you feel like you’re toeing the line with your busy superiors’ schedules. At least now I can rightly put on my resume Professional Fire Extinguisher.

This week, remaining workers were ordered by Musk to document their work’s achievements from the past week or resign, requiring them to prove why they should still have their jobs and not fall victim to the already staggering cuts in staff.
Trump ends federal benefits to undocumented migrants:
Donald Trump has signed an executive order this week that will end federal benefits being given to undocumented migrants, with the White House disguising it as a policy to ‘take corrective action’ against migrants and stop funds from being used to ‘support sanctuary policies or assist illegal immigration’. This was confirmed on the White House’s twitter page, telling people that there would be ‘no more federal benefits to illegal aliens’. Ironically, at the same event that this policy was announced, he described the USA in three words - love, strength and respect.
Donald Trump fires the US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, CQ Brown:
General CQ Brown was fired this week, being the second black man to hold the position and having co-signed a memo setting out diversity goals for the minority officer applicants. Develop leadership Skills Outside 9-5 Serving on nonprofits boards and volunteering in the community allowed me to gain key skills outside of my day job. It was in board meetings and part of committees where I was able to develop these skills, I simply didn’t have exposure in my day-to-day. And once I was placed in these situations and learn from them, I was able to run with it. With that confidence and immediate impact, I was able to build and strengthen my portfolio, allowing me to rise in my career quicker.
Moreover, if you are an excellent accountant, marketer, or attorney, you can expand your skills and expedite your experience while providing immense value and expertise to a deserving nonprofit. It may even allow you to be more appreciative of that skill in your day job.
Pro Tip: Think about a skill you want to hone and ask to try it out with a local nonprofit. Want to get better at copywriting? Offer to write material for an annual report. Want to learn how to manage multiple projects and stakeholders all at once? Volunteer with a local nonprofit executive director. The idea here is to fail safely.
