Twenty Fanfic Writer Questions
Tagged by @littleblackraincloudofcourse
Tagging @lowkeyed1 @evodevo-geekmonkey @dianels @bisexualshakespeare @spybrarian @blackdalek
1. How many works do you have on Ao3?
7 (3 are WiP)
2. What’s your total Ao3 word count?
186,452
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Willow! ...Technically other things too but really it's just Willow with playful skins.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Red Embers: dark alternate future AU, resistance fighters against the Wyrm's tyranny, grim & gritty
Like Constellations, a Million Years Away: sprawling mecha sci-fi AU set in the world of the Lancer tabletop roleplaying game. The Questies all pilot giant mechs; four books (2 done), one focused on each of Jade, Kit, Graydon, and Elora (in that order). Posthumanism, anticolonial to the extent a fanfic can be, utopian, dramatic.
Soft Blazing Crowns: Tanthamoretober one-shot. Modern AU. Elora helps Jade with a sexy photoshoot for a gift for Kit.
Full: (E-rated) Tanthamoretober one-shot. Modern AU. Straight-up smut drabble, 100 words on the dot. Extremely funny to me that this is in the top 5. :P
The Loving Hurt: Canon-set one-shot digging into the violence implied by the canon against the Bone Reavers, Scorpia's backstory, how Jade got her name. Dark, grim, not pleasant to write and in some ways probably not to read TBH. I was in A Mood!
5. Do you respond to comments?
Religiously! Sometimes it takes me a while, but I do.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Hmmm. I mean I think it's gotta be The Loving Hurt. Like I said. Dark. Blame the show's writers, I do. :P
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Gonna resist the temptation to say Full and instead say I think that it'll probably be Flawless Five vol. 1 when it's finished in a few weeks!
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Not so far!
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
The only thing I'd consider smut is Full. Otherwise, not anywhere that you can see. ;)
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
No true crossovers, though Like Constellations is set (loosely) in the Lancer Universe.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I don't think so! They're too weird!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No but I'd be so honored.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Nope!
14. What’s your all-time favorite ship?
I am a Tanthamore diehard, what can I say.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
If you'd asked me recently I'd probably have said "all of them." Fortunately I'm feeling a little better lately! I hope to finish all of the current ones; Constellations is a slow, weighty project, F5 I hope to have done very shortly, Embers...we'll figure that out after F5.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I think I'm pretty good at dialogue, and I'm decent though not incredible at humor (especially character-based humor). I'm also a decent mimic - though this can feel a little clunky sometimes, I think I'm able to adjust my voice pretty easily to suit a situation, genre, or style. My unhinged and unpopular fic Excerpts from a new translation... is a pretty good example of that, lol. And on that note: I have a lot of fun with wacky metatextual stuff.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Taking the wacky meta stuff too far; not being bold enough in straying from the established character arcs/plots in canon; I don't think I'm great at writing really juicy interiority. Starting very large projects that will take forever to finish. ':)
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I'm comfortable enough in Spanish to write simple dialogue in that language. I've done one line in Latin (which I'm comfortable with since it's functionally a dead language) and made up some words in a conlang for Constellations. Wouldn't try anything via Google Translate though.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Willow! At least if we count conscious fanfiction. If we're going back to the Days of Yore probably Animorphs when I was a wee one.
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
Difficult to pick...but Like Constellations is the baby, the one I'll finish come hell or high water (I hope). On the other hand, Flawless Five is probably the most fun (to write, and maybe to read if you like that sort of thing) and Red Embers is the one that in many ways I find most exciting. Like I said - hard to choose!

#if you are wondering about the flood thing#trees obviously absorb water#they also grow through the soil with their roots to increase the ability of the ground to absorb water#also the leaves catch the rain slowing how much water reaches the ground at once and lets some of the water evaporate before reaching groun#urban trees are super important for human well-being in many ways#can't speak to the Italian haha but all the English info is great
Thanks for sharing @evodevo-geekmonkey
The Magic of Street-Side Trees. Beauty, Coolness, and Urban Prosperity.
The beauty, coolness, and urban prosperity brought by street-side trees.
Trees lining urban streets are integral elements of the urban landscape, serving multiple ecological roles and socio-economic functions. In general, incorporating trees along the roads in urban areas can elevate the aesthetic appeal, regulate temperatures, and foster prosperity growth. And if our goal is to enhance the role of cities in driving economic growth and fully utilizing human resources, then we must prioritize making tangible improvements to urban environments.
Trees are crucial components for creating appealing and hospitable urban environments that enhance citizens' psychological and social well-being. They play a vital role in reducing air temperature and humidity, which helps alleviate the effects of heat waves and global warming. Trees bear witness to the history, culture, and identity of cities, which they preserve and pass on to future generations. In addition to their undeniable beauty, trees are valuable allies in the fight against climate change.
They provide a range of local benefits that are often ignored beyond the global role of absorbing carbon dioxide. This article aims to increase awareness among readers about the importance of trees for cities and the planet. It seeks to motivate all of us to value, preserve, and protect the urban tree heritage through a participatory and accountable manner that involves citizens and institutions.
Street-side trees are more than just beautiful to look at. They are an essential resource for cities, providing numerous benefits to residents' health, well-being, and quality of life. In their article on Monocolo, Paolo Massi and Giulia Papaleo highlight the main advantages of trees in urban areas. La magia degli alberi lungo le strade. Bellezza, frescura e prosperità urbana
Among the benefits that trees bring to the urban environment, we can mention:
Trees perform ecological, social, and economic functions that contribute to the well-being and development of cities. They help to reduce air pollution by capturing particles, filtering harmful gases, and producing oxygen. Trees also absorb carbon from the atmosphere and store it in their wood, making them beneficial for climate change mitigation. Additionally, trees create shade, cool the air, and reduce energy consumption for cooling buildings. They prevent flooding, improve water quality, and increase biodiversity by providing shelter and food for many species. Trees enhance the urban landscape, mitigate noise, and even increase the value of properties.
Moreover, they promote physical and mental health by stimulating physical activity, reducing stress, and improving mood and concentration.
Therefore, roadside trees are a valuable resource for cities and their inhabitants. It is critical to protect, care for, and increase them through various means, such as public policies, private actions, and guaranteed maintenance over time, recognizing their fundamental role in the quality of urban life so that maintenance, which develops jobs, in particular, is 'guaranteed' over time,
Urban forestation and eco-neighborhoods.
Urban forestation refers to designing and creating green spaces in urban and peri-urban areas to incorporate nature into the landscape. It is important to both develop new green spaces and enhance existing ones.
Eco-neighborhoods serve as an example of sustainable and livable urban environments. They are designed considering the environment and the health of their residents. Sustainability principles are followed to improve the landscape and economic assets of the urban context. The design of an environmentally sustainable neighborhood aims to reduce its environmental impact during construction, throughout its life cycle, and even during decommissioning while prioritizing the comfort of its residents. These neighborhoods are built to improve people's quality of life by emphasizing energy conservation, renewable energy, environmentally friendly materials, reducing water and waste consumption, and promoting sustainable mobility. They are tangible parts of the city that contribute to the well-being of its inhabitants.
In addition, urban forestation is another example of how urban environments can be made more livable and sustainable. We can seamlessly blend nature into the urban landscape by integrating street trees, gardens, and parks. They represent elements of nature that help purify the air we breathe, capturing pollutants, storing carbon, and mitigating the climate of cities.
In summary, street-side trees are not just a decorative element but a proper green infrastructure that improves the quality of urban life. Therefore, It is vital to encourage planting, caring for, and preserving trees in urban areas, with the participation of government institutions, businesses, and residents, in order to achieve a shared vision to promote sustainable progress.

Intro

evodevo-geekmonkey replied to your post “I know this isn’t a popular opinion, but I am actually okay with...”
I appreciate everything you are saying and I get how it has to do with the plot and totally agree. But due to the UK's long history of homophobia it is always going to be suspicious to me. I am just wired like a prey animal when it comes to this stuff. I don't think anyone involved in the show is homophobic it just will always be sketch that when it turns from het flirting to homo flirting it turns off. I can't trust BBC's intentions with their most famous character.
But I totally agree with the rest. Because she doesn't want a real romance again. Because she is definitely scared of that. But flirting isn't romance and... Well 12 did flirt with a dinosaur so I don't think silly flirting is out. But deep romance yeah she is gonna avoid it
It’s always a real surprise to me re: BBC and homophobia because of the RTD era and Torchwood but then again, I’m not really that familiar with British TV landscape except for Doctor Who!
I did remember Peter Capaldi going around in interviews before ‘Deep Breath’ going: ‘There is no flirting with this Doctor!’ and then having Twelve turn around and flirt with a dinosaur... although after that I think it took a while for flirting to happen again? I think I chalked that up to regeneration weirdness.
Also, the Doctor’s tendency flirting with non humans. (Jodie’s chemistry with a wooden box shows how much she can generate chemistry with anything and anyone!).
It’s really fascinating to me how Thirteen looks like the most open of the Doctors and yet also, the most tight lipped about herself personally. Other than telling anyone who will listen she’s an alien, I thought it was telling that it took until Kerblam for Graham to know Thirteen had two hearts.
I wonder if the fam even knows that TARDIS actually stands for Time and Relative Dimension in Space?

evodevo-geekmonkey replied to your post “Kate is 100% a valid bi. It’s just. Like. We always get queer women...”
Back in my day queerbaiting actually meant the showrunners jerking us around because they were too scared to actually have lgbtq characters. It means something that maybe these people are too young to have context for? But it's not even that long ago it was happening so..... I don't understand the confusion. If you have a character on screen in a same sex relationship that is a very far cry from queerbaiting.
It’s quite a self explanatory term. Baiting the queers with what at least appears to be queer content. But yeah a bait is a trick, the word is defined by the queer content not being real or not being present at all. So how people find it in themselves to keep calling shows with actual queer characters and relationships “queerbait” is blowing my mind. I mean they have Supercorp RIGHT THERE as a great recent example of queerbait (unnecessary as it was because Alex/Sanvers. That’s even worse, they were just toying with a pseudo romantic dynamic because they could, they didn’t even need to bait anyone but that’s what it was).

@evodevo-geekmonkey replied to your post “Okay, but like, have we talked about how Alison’s house violates the...”
If the house was built on a hill this is totally possible. The first house I lived in was on a hill and the backyard was on the second floor. But it depends on what the outside of Alison's house looks like
A fair point, and one worth investigating!
As you can see from this shot, we have at most, a slight decline from Alison’s house to the backyard/garage area. Certainly not a severe enough angle to account for the entire stairwell, which, I should remind everyone, is built like ten feet from the front door. And it’s like another ten feet from the bottom of the stairs to the backyard. Where is the drop, friends? Where is the drop?
