Wind Dancer

Teeny vent about the premiere of SVTFOE (mostly about Toffee)

OK….finally saw the Battle for Mewni premiere…and I just want to say is…Wow.

Wow!

I have mixed feelings about the premiere.

On the one hand, it had such dark and humorous moments that were memorable, great scenes to punch your emotional gut, and suspense.

However…I’m not really satisfied with the ending…particularly with Toffee’s fate.

Toffee is my favorite character in the show, and I just need to vent about what just happened in the premiere.

Spoilers underneath the read more so view at your own risk.

Since Season 1, Toffee had been introduced as a mysterious character with an unknown motive and an unknown background. This caused a lot of speculations and theories among the SVTFOE fans and possibly became one of the most popular characters in the entire show.

Then in the premiere…he just gets crushed by a pillar.

Granted, we still don’t really know whether he is really dead or not (I think and hope he’s not). but if he really is dead and gone…I’m sorry, but that’s the lamest ending to a great character like him.

Toffee has so much potential as a character. We saw how tense he was during “Mewnipendence Day”, and his “The Reason You Suck” speech to Ludo during “Marco Grows a Beard” makes a lot of sense now that we learned he was a general to an army of monsters.

My sister and I were talking about the episode and she was a lot more eloquent in her thoughts and feelings about it. I just had to share what she said because she’s an awesome analyst about these things. 

“The writers of the show are feeding us this idea that Toffee is gone or dead because we have an interaction between Buff Frog and Marco where Marco asks if he’s gone and Buff Frog replies that “he looks gone to him.” If that truly is the end of Toffee… it sucks. It sucks because, yeah, we are disappointed that an interesting and intriguing character has left us so soon, but it also leaves a lot of questions. If this is truly the last time we see Toffee, then there’s a lot of questions left open for him. Why did he go rogue? What was it that drove him and his monsters to go and kill Moon’s mother? Was going after his finger just so that he could be immortal again? Or is there something more to that? Something he needed to have his immortality back for so that he can complete?

Perhaps they needed to find a way to put Toffee on the side while they focus on another part of this season’s conflict. Overall, it would be a disappointment if that was truly the end of Toffee. I don’t feel like his motives were justified enough. The monsters were about to sign a peace treaty, why did he go rogue? Because he’s evil. Cool. Why did he posses Ludo and trap Star and basically the last part of that episode? Because he wants his finger back. Cool…and lame. He had motives and the answers we got from the beginning of the season don’t quite cut it for me if that’s the end of Toffee. So I’m sure he’s going to come back, at least in flashback form so we can understand why he did all of this. And if the creators expect us to accept the idea that he just wanted his finger back for immortality for kicks and giggles and that he rebelled because he’s #EvilMonster, then that’s bad writing in my opinion. But I have faith in the creators that there’s going to be more to that and that they’re not going to disappoint us with what they had planned for the rest of the season and with Toffee in particular.”

Yes, just yes. Massive props to my sister for saying exactly what I’ve been feeling but in a more intelligent light.

I just feel like Toffee has so much potential and it is my hope that he is not dead and more will be revealed about him. However if he’s dead for real, that was just a waste of a great character.
