"Evil Dead Rise" Movie Review
"A properly insane Evil Dead gorefest!" Check our #EvilDeadRise Movie Review & make sure you watch it in Cinemas from April 20 @RealAlyssaS @evildead @RealLilSull
Sam Raimi‘s original Evil Dead was an unlikely starting point for a multi-decade franchise, but here we are in 2023 with five movies and a TV series. It’s unusual in that the series has flitted between genres in the form of horror, comedy and fantasy, meaning you don’t know exactly what you’re getting with a new installment, and Lee Cronin hasn’t bucked that tradition with Evil Dead Rise. Evil Dead Rise (2023) Review
Tumblr media
This film may just feature one of the greatest movie title cards in modern day horror. That shot on the lake with the title in the background.... *chef’s kiss*
Plot: A reunion between two estranged sisters gets cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.
This movie is insane!! This is very much not the cheese-fest of Sam Raimi’s original trilogy, for as much as I enjoy seeing Bruce Campbell tear down demons using a shotgun he calls “The Boomstick”, those movies haven’t aged too well and now come off more so as campy horror parodies. Even the producers of those films having realised this made the show Ash vs Evil Dead in 2015 that fully leaned into the silliness and humour. However with the 2013 reboot and now Evil Dead Rise, this franchise is constantly trying to reinvent itself by appealing more to younger audiences, in this case side-lining the comedy in favour of a full blown shocking gore-fest. There’s so much blood in this movie - gosh golly! An abundance of gruesome imagery and horrifying kills - this is an Evil Dead that truly embraces its title.
Look, I don’t really get scared by horror movies. Whether featuring elements of the supernatural or based on real life, for some reason knowing that its all on a screen makes me completely unphased by it all. Bet I’d do terrible if The Ring was a reality. I’d just keep staring at that creepy lady with the long hair as it crawls out of the screen and kills me, and I’d just let it happen. But in the cinema screening I was at I could tell the audience was absolutely terrified of Evil Dead Rise. I could hear audible gasps throughout, and my dear fiancĂ©e next to me was hiding her face behind her hands for most of the movie in fear. So yes, pretty sure most people would find this to be a scary film. I did not, however the levels of gory massacre were truly shocking and in your face, and certain sequences were really uncomfortable. For example a certain moment involving a character swallowing glass and then seeing the glass press against their neck skin from the inside - eww! Yep, definitely a horror film.
There’s plenty of Easter Eggs and references for diehard fans of the franchise, such as the use of the Book of the Dead, or the chainsaw coming into the action, or the classic Sam Raimi shaky cam technique representing the evil spirit flying in for its attack. But director Lee Cronin uses these call-backs to only add to his very distinct horror directing style. I mean, this guy knows how to effectively build tension and suspense from the camerawork to the shot angles and special effects. This movie is so good at building up that feeling of anxiety and uncertainty, and then allowing it all to climax with blood, blood and even more blood. 6,500 litres of fake blood was apparently used during the making of this film. That a heck of a lot of blood.
Character wise is where the movie may falter a bit. In the beginning we are introduced to this family, and they’re all just sitting about and socialising and we basically learn one fun fact about each of them. One of them is very into music, the other goes on protests a lot. And these fun facts become their one each main characteristic. As such I didn’t really care for any of them, which I guess is okay as I did come to this movie after all for some frights and gore, not for a serious deep character study. The one stand out though is Alyssa Sutherland as the possessed mum. She was superb as this vile horrible ungodly being who would throw about insults knowing exactly how to hurt each of her family members, as well as providing a very physical performance, and one that was beyond effective. Sutherland - you’re one creepy looking lady!
I really enjoyed Evil Dead Rise. It does exactly what a horror movie should do - keep you on the edge of your seat, and shock you with its sheer rated R insanity. I also appreciate this franchise fully embracing its more darker sensitivities instead of the comedic, as it provided a very thrilling cinematic experience. That is if it weren’t for half of the theatre audience in my screening forgetting how to mute a smartphone!! Now that was the real madness!
Overall score: 7/10

So, About Evil Dead Rise,
I am begging Hollywood to let mainstream horror movies have sad & grim endings again. Let the final girl die. If ever there was a movie that should've done this, it's this one.
Now, that aside, this film did successfully keep me entertained for an hour and a half, and it was able to keep me slightly unnerved, so that's something. Whether or not it's enough is a matter of some debate.
One big strike this movie immediately has against it is the cabin in the woods opening scene. There was a lot of debate when the trailers came out about how this scene could fit into the story. Turns out the answer is it doesn't. The scene contributes nothing, is barely connected, and could've been cut without anyone noticing it was gone. A complete and utter waste of runtime. The one thing it attempts to do is give the audience a sucker-punch right at the beginning, and there were other better ways to do that. It also serves to try and give the film a sucker-punch ending, but since I don't know or care about any of the characters at that cabin this completely fails and, again, could've been better accomplished in other ways.
It feels like the writers were trying to have their cake and eat it too, by having our heroes survive but then use the separate unestablished and uncared for cabin in the woods characters to still give us something dark to chew on. If the film makers had just committed one way or the other, it would've had a much heavier impact.
It also really feels like the filmmakers just didn't know how to make an Evil Dead film. The reason the first two originals worked is they were relatively light on plot. They spent like 10 minutes at the beginning establishing characters and exposition, and everything after that was pure unadulterated horror. This film, on the other hand, follows the more conventional flow of going back and forth between exposition and action throughout the film, which if you ask me really does not serve horror movies well and definitely doesn't work here. Like we'll get some nice horrific tension building and then all the sudden, just when it's really getting good, the writers tear it all away by having the characters relax and do some more expositioning.
Not only does this not work well from a tension point of view, it also doesn't make all that much sense in-universe. In the original Evil Dead, the hero is never safe for a moment. The deadites always have some diabolically horrifying trick up their sleeve. The hero never gets a moments rest. Every time he thinks he's gotten rid of the deadites temporarily, they almost immediately throw something new at him. Here, however, the deadites conveniently play dead or forget about the assorted supernatual things they're capable of for extended periods of time whenever the plot demands our characters should rest.
I am once again asking horror movie writers to stop feeling beholden to conventional film/plot structure. It will not always work for you. Have some fun with it for christ sake.
Now there is still plenty to praise here. There's loads of nice juicy practical effects, and it seems like overall CGI is kept to a minimum. And with these delightfully realistic effects, we get some gore scenes that will really make you squirm. But of course, Evil Dead has never been about gore.
There are also some fun callbacks to the originals that I'm certain everyone will enjoy, including one scene that's fairly reminiscent of the famous laughing scene, although in this case it doesn't go quite far enough. I will say though, that was one of the scenes that legitimately scared me.
Ultimately, this film did successfully unnerved me, and though I think it could've been better, it is still relatively damn good. I do recommend seeing this in theaters. If I had less of a tolerance, I would've been terrified.

‘Evil Dead Rise’ Review: A Magnificent Bloody Blast
“#EvilDeadRise violent and brutal film full of its own personality, a film to see in the cinema, it’s a whole new experience for the franchise.” #SXSW2023 #SXSW #EvilDead Check out our full review:
Evil Dead Rise, directed by Lee Cronin and written by Lee Cronin, is also a new reimagining for the Evil Dead franchise. Sam Raimi, director of the original films in the franchise, ends up being an executive producer on this film here. As was the case with 2013’s Evil Dead in which it has similarities but is nothing like Sam Raimi’s original films, Evil Dead Rise is a film with a different

Evil Dead Rise (2023)
Tumblr media
Don’t let the semi-comical (though extremely gruesome) pre-title sequence fool ya; Evil Dead Rise is not a horror-comedy. I can’t vouch for the Ash vs. Evil Dead television series, but 2013’s Evil Dead wasn’t funny either. Not even darkly funny. This franchise now has two modes: splatsick horror and visceral, unsettling terror. While you may not gasp in fright often, what happens in this film is so no-holds-barred that thinking back at it, I shudder.
After learning that she’s pregnant, guitar technician Beth (Lily Sullivan) visits her sister Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland), nephew Danny (Morgan Davies) and nieces Bridget (Gabrielle Echols) & Kassie (Nell Fisher). Then, an earthquake hits Los Angeles and causes a concealed chamber in their building’s basement parking lot to open. Inside, Danny finds a copy of the Necronomicon, as well as recordings of its passages. Once played, the incantations summon the demonic Deadites.
The main cast consists of two adults and three children. I figured the main cast would be "spared" (except for psychological trauma or minor injury) while everyone else in the building would get possessed by the evil magic of the Naturom Demonto. I was wrong. Writer/director Lee Cronin gleefully tears his characters apart, leaving piles of red goo and severed limbs all over the place. What’s particularly unnerving is that you have no idea how our heroes will make it out alive. Deadites are not zombies. Shooting them in the head only puts them down for a few minutes. Once they get back up, Deadites can use weapons, may wield supernatural powers (beyond rising from the dead) and they can talk. More than talk, they can strategize, deceive and taunt. That’s particularly relevant because Deadites are nasty. Not just physically; they don’t play fair. You keep expecting this to be like a possession movie, where you can exorcise the demons out of people and bring them back to normal, but that’s not happening.
The word to describe Evil Dead Rise is “deranged”. When you see the ways people and monsters get stabbed, shot, dismembered, shredded, grated, torn apart, impaled, mangled and mutilated, you wonder what sort of person dreamt up this nightmare scenario. I knew I was in store for something traumatic when the rental screen gave me chills - remember, it's just a still image. In action, it’ll have squeamish viewers running for the hills. In a way, I think the makeup and special effects artists might have overdone it. It’s not that they’re excessive, it’s that most people will be wincing and covering their eyes so much that if the visuals had been half as good, no one would notice. Try your best to keep your eyes open, however, there are some great monsters in this movie.
This fifth, standalone entry in the series pours on the viscera but it also takes the time to craft likable characters. This means you’re equally excited and nervous when the madness starts. Yes, Danny is warned by his sister not to touch the evil-looking book but he grabs it anyway because it looks fancy and most importantly, expensive. He thinks selling it might bring the family some much-needed cash. The relationship between several of the family members may be strained but you can tell much of the tension comes from the unfortunate circumstances that have been piling on top of their shoulders in recent months. Sometimes, our heroes do make mistakes that make their situation worse but more often than not, they’re making smart choices and in their defense, no one could ever be prepared to handle the torrent of hellfire unleashed upon them. Things are not completely hopeless, but it’s not looking good.
The only major flaw in Evil Dead Rise is the opening scene. Firstly, because it means everything is told in flashback. Being shown that more goes on after the events inside the high-rise end feels unfair. Even if the entire family makes it out alive, it’s rather bleak to know they weren’t able to contain the evil and that it “lives” on. The second reason to criticize the opening scene is for its tone, which doesn’t match the rest of the movie. I wonder if it was made intentionally more splatsticky so that the die-hard fans of Evil Dead 1-3 would give this film a chance. There is something to be said about catering to your audience’s expectations, but it's inconsistent.
Evil Dead Rise is a frightening, unrelenting deluge of horror and gore that keeps you guessing, shows you something new, and gives you something to remember all while forcing its likable protagonists through the wringer. There aren’t any big names among the cast but I wouldn’t be surprised to see more than one make it big in the future. I was impressed. (June 14, 2024)

Evil Dead Rise (2023)
⭐⭐⭐
Tumblr media
This got boring after a while. How many times can I watch demon-people get horribly disfigured by themselves or others?
Like yeah, I get it. The Dead is Evil and they have Risen. Maybe I would have gotten more from this movie if it wasn’t the only one I have seen from the franchise.
But I will say, the line: “Mommy’s with the maggots now,” goes so incredibly hard.
Watch this film if:
You don’t get gore fatigued easily
You like to squirm at realistic body horror
The trope of “Horror at Home” isn’t overdone since living through it during the lockdown orders of 2020
Similar titles:
Hereditary (2018) (spooky mommy issues done a bit better, imo)
Insidious (2010) (spooky daddy issues)

Bro... 😐 ...Dayum. THIS was some badass shit. Evil Dead is still the King of horror franchises imo (when you include Ash vs Evil Dead). Definitely check this one out in the theater because the sound effects are a big part of its delivery. You wanna endure that shit with the full might of a powerful sound system. I pretty much loved every minute of this. My only critique would be when they tried to pay homage to the original with an effect that was amusing but didn't really fit the vibe. I feel like they could have paid that homage by doing a gag that resulted in the same payoff but was more true to the feel of this film. Other than that? Fuck. Yes. Good shit. 8.5/10 pending a second watch.

Quickie: Evil Dead Rise
Tumblr media
7/10
Evil Dead Rise is the newest installment of one of the great horror franchises. This movie is about a mother and her kids living in a run down apartment block when the family aunt comes to visit. As they gather together, an uninvited, demonic guest also slips inside.
The original Evil Dead films have come to define the genre. This film tries to take these conventions into the modern era, which I think it does a decent, but not exceptional job of. It has some really fun and disgusting gore, some great scenarios and the overall tone of fun hellish slasher is entertaining. But the gore didnt push the boundaries for me, and while occasionally a bit funny, it never reached the silly heights of the iconic Bruce Campbell movies. Acting was also decent, with Alyssa Sutherland as Ellie giving a great performance. The production values felt right for a horror movie of this type, doing a lot of good prosthetic and makeup for the demons and gore.
Overall while I definitely enjoyed it, I wasnt hooked and mesmerized like I’d hoped. Evil Dead Rise wont be making it onto any ‘Best Of’ lists, and it doesnt match its legendary predecessor, but its still a right bit of good fun if you like horror.
