“Death is only the beginning”
In celebration of The Mummy’s 25th anniversary (🫠) i wanted to draw this after seeing the rerelease in theatres!
ART META
That tagline is still so brilliantly haunting. I created this piece with Rick and Evie as the key that both jump started and ended multiple cycles of unfinished business. The deaths of Princess Nefertiti and her guard, then Evie down the line demonstrate how deeply rebirth is tied to her character. Her pull towards the Book of the Dead, her “I’ve dreamt about this since I was a little girl,” which should absolutely be taken literal by this point, her successful resurrection, all of it pointing to this unstoppable force that is Evie saying, “You can’t threaten me with your return if I’m making it my fate to pull you out of the underworld myself.” Death is only her beginning as well.
Then we have the Golden book of Amun Ra/Book of the Living associated with Rick as her counterpart. This book is the punctuation at the end of a sentence, fitting for a reincarnated Medjai and soldier. Rick is the guide and key to leading Evie to Hamunaptra, the city of the dead. His force of will allowing him to survive the harsh desert and imprisonment. He is strength despite odds, imbued with vitality to bring upon death to those who overstayed their welcome.
I drew Rick in his signature adventuring outfit and emotional support holsters, the ones he still wears under formal suits. And likewise Evie in her librarian outfit bc that’s where she shines, as a proud librarian—a place like her in a girl like this. But I really love how her outfits always leaned towards black to balance Rick. I decided against it in order to make her pop and emphasize the librarian aspect, and mirror his short hair better.

Well, you put up with me because I can read and write in ancient Egyptian, decipher hieroglyphics and hieratics... and well, I am the only person within five thousand miles who can properly code and catalogue this library, that's why!

Lockwood & Co AU where Lockwood's parents are just Evie and Rick O'Connell from The Mummy
Lockwood inexplicably knows a lot of extremely specific things about Ancient Egypt and he never elaborates and it infuriates George to no end
Lockwood: Well, it can't be a real canopic jar. The jackal protects the stomach, not the liver. George, who has never seen Lockwood read anything other than trashy tabloids and pulp detective novels: How could you possibly know that???
They discover while fighting off relicmen that Lockwood is insanely capable with guns and he flat out refuses to acknowledge any line of questioning about it, but it does explain the crate of old shotguns in the basement
He also apparently knows how to build, operate, and diffuse a range of explosive devices, which they discover during the Siege of Portland Row
Clearly, he has a talent for leaving buildings in partial to complete ruin everywhere he goes
He viciously despises the British Museum, a fact they discover after getting hired to clear out a particularly nasty poltergeist from one of their exhibit halls and Lockwood turns them down flat
On top of ghost relics, Portland Row is also home to various Ancient Egyptian decor--small statues, modern recreations of khopeshes, photographs of temple interiors. Some of the artifacts are the real thing and he does not see the hypocrisy in this
Along with the iron line outside, the lintel of the front door has the Eye of Horus carved into it as an additional protective measure
During rare nights off, the gang sometimes plays board games together and Lockwood is visibly surprised that no one else knows how to play Senet
He speaks Arabic and, if given enough time and motivation, can translate hieroglyphics
Sometimes when they're stumped in a particularly dangerous case, Lockwood will call on a 'family friend' who happens to have the relevant connections or expertise
Ardeth visits on Christmas every year without fail or warning. Everyone is in utter shock the first time except Lockwood, who is royally embarrassed by all the baby stories his godfather keeps telling people. Ardeth is just happy to know that Lockwood has formed his own family
The uncle he stayed with in the country was Jonathan
He has dual citizenship in the United States and, when Kipps learns this, he teases him mercilessly about it

25 years ago I was born but, more importantly, 25 years ago The Mummy was released. Had a lil rewatch and the smile has not left my face.
First things first, thank you to the cast for awakening my bisexuality. Secondly, Evie is my hero and one of the first female characters I saw growing up that was not only doing a job I daydreamed about but was a badass as well as a librarian. Thirdly, Brendan Fraser…. No one is hotter than you or will ever be. You’re everyone’s type. You’re THE type. Each individual lock of hair on your head deserves its own room in a 5 star hotel. The clothes on your skin as Rick make me want to burn down the entire fashion industry for never being good enough, for never matching the standards you set. Fourthly, Jonathan……. You’re a cash-hungry kook and I will always appreciate you for it. Fifthly, Ardeth Bay… Ardeth Bay…….. Ardeth Bay…………… baby girl……………… you’re gay. You saw a white man trudge through the desert after being in a forbidden city and instead of killing him, as you would do with anyone else, you let him go. The second you saw him the next time your first words were “he’s strong”. When you first came face to face with him and his gun, you walked away AFTER you disarmed him. Then, you ran into mummy zombies to give your boyfriend time to save his girlfriend. Then you came back to say goodbye. You’re gay, son. And you made Rick gay for you too. Sixthly, Imhotep I hate you but in the kinkiest way possible. It’s giving screaming-“fuck you”-just-to-get-you-to-fuck-me vibes and I wouldn’t expect anything less unhinged from myself. Seventhly… Anck-Su-Namun, I too would raise hell and bring every plague to earth if it meant getting to spend time with you. Never seen a hotter human being in my entire liFE. Lastly…. Given that The Mummy has had two perfect movies, I’m still waiting for the final part of this incomplete trilogy. I am a patient child. I will wait forever.
K.
That’s all.
