maybe im just crazy or maybe i just haven’t read enough runs yet but how come Superman seems to THRIVE in minis and stand-alones while being stuck in some of the most boring stories in continuity? like i’ll read Byrne Superman, Jurgens Action Comics and Tomasi Rebirth and I just remember it being SOOO boring and lack luster. but then i’ll read stuff like Birthright, All-Star, Smashes the Klan, Up in the Sky and it’ll be PEAK Superman so what gives? cuz it’s like i enjoy the Geoff Johns stuff and I love Morrison’s Action Comics so i know it can be done in the main titles but i just feel like more often than not, the character’s kinda held back. anyways here’s hoping that Superman: Lost and Williamson’s Superman can prove to be bangers
Shitty editorial played a part. Berganza got Morrison, Waid, Millar, and Peyer all banned from the Superbooks for as long as Carlin was in charge because of how he handled the Superman 2000 pitch (in addition to being a sex pest). Talented creators can only do so much when the editorial mandates they get are terrible, just look at the New 52 for evidence.
Continuity plays another part in hamstringing Superman. If no one knows what is canon and what isn't, how the hell are you supposed to write the character? Is Lex from Smallville? Are the Kents alive or dead? Obsessing over continuity is crippling DC, but not having any at all is what drove George Perez and a lot of other talented creators away during the New 52.
Final big reason? There's more freedom. You don't have to worry about editorial demands (mostly), you can just tell the story you want because it's non-canon anyway. No concerns over how does this fit in with everyone else, just the writer and artists doing their thing. If Waid wants the Kents to be dead in his upcoming BL book, then they're dead. If he wants Lex to be a mad scientist and not a CEO then that's what Lex is. When the characters serve your story rather than having to constantly rework the story to serve the status quo of the characters, that's when you see big swings that can revitalize worn out franchises (or kill them dead if the ideas are bad).
