The Subtle Art of Finding Joy in the Mundane
In the dizzying whirlwind of our modern lives, with its notifications, deadlines, and endless to-do lists, it's easy to overlook the little things. Our quest for big achievements, exotic vacations, and grand celebrations often overshadows the understated moments that make up our daily lives. Yet, there's a profound beauty and solace in the mundane, waiting to be discovered.
The Magic of Morning Rituals
Consider the simple act of brewing your morning coffee or tea. The aromatic scent that wafts through your kitchen, the warmth of the mug against your palms, and that first invigorating sip – it's a ritual that beckons a new day, filled with possibilities. It's not just about the caffeine kick, but the quiet moments we grant ourselves before the day's chaos ensues.
Nature's Everyday Theater
Look out of your window. Even if you're in the heart of a bustling city, nature is putting on a daily show. The radiant hues of a sunrise, the gentle rustle of leaves in the breeze, or even the rhythmic patter of rain against the windowpane. These are nature's gentle reminders of its cyclic rhythm, urging us to pause and sync our own rhythms with the world around us.
The Joy of Daily Tasks
Believe it or not, there's a meditative quality in mundane chores. The rhythmic act of washing dishes, the soft hum of a vacuum cleaner, or the therapeutic act of decluttering can be grounding experiences. They tether us to the present moment, offering a break from the incessant noise in our heads.
Conversations and Connections
Everyday joy is also about connections. A brief chat with a neighbor, a spontaneous phone call to a friend, or even the simple act of greeting your local grocery store cashier can forge bonds. It's in these fleeting interactions that we find a shared human experience.
Rediscovering Your Space
Sometimes, joy is about rediscovery. Re-read a favorite book, revisit old photographs, or rearrange your furniture. Familiar spaces and objects can offer new perspectives and insights when looked at with fresh eyes.
Wrapping Up
The art of finding joy in the mundane is essentially about shifting our perspective. It's about appreciating life's quiet moments and finding depth in simplicity. It's recognizing that while milestones and grand celebrations are significant, there's immeasurable joy to be found in the spaces in between.
In the words of novelist Alice Walker, "Expect nothing. Live frugally on surprise." Life's everyday surprises, no matter how small, are the threads that weave the beautiful tapestry of our existence. So, let's cherish them.

What Fun...
Young’uns are as solemn as a cathedral imposing and an attempt to be stately.  Games are no longer played unless there is a trophy attached. How I would like to let loose Pop Glossop and his ilk of mindlessness over the merchants of mindfulness.  In moments of deep deluge, I wonder if we even remember what fun is… Ah, fun! That delightful concoction of amusement and merriment, often bubbling…

Cold Lakes
We’ve got 21 years to boast, not an easy feat, imagine diving into an icy lake, head first, while we were wading and floundering, we often ask one another, should we get out? Too late for that now, we have committed and therefore invested more than two decades discovering what really love means, along with two binding contracts to remind us why we have to strive as adults. Relationships are more…

There's nothing I love more at work than unexpectedly tech savvy pensioners.
Like, anyone over 60 regularly complains that "they don't believe in email" and "why does everyone keep telling me to do it online" and, sure, that's fair, not everything should be online, and most people I work for have a birth year starting with 193- and a history working in the most analog industry worldwide. Extremely valid objections from extremely valid people. But then there's the ones who have digitalized so hard, they make the tech bros look restrained and moderate.
For example, the 98-yo guy who was like "yeah, no, I can't do digital; I dropped my phone, the camera is busted, new one is still being shipped--do you people still do fax?"¹ And then he called back 10 minutes later because the (16-yo) nursing home trainee wasn't sure a) what a fax machine was and b) how to replace the paper in the one on their floor, and she wouldn't let him do it for her. Callous youth, what is this world coming to, back in my day, etc.
And the 80-yo woman who couldn't remember what paperwork she had sent us--we didn't have an online overview she could check. Also, her 60-yo neighbor was still dragging her feet on the online safety seminar, apologies for that. After a bit of back and forth, she was delighted to learn she could use our app on her tablet--for a grand total of thirty seconds. That's how long it took me to mix up the names "App Store" and "Play Store" and get stuck in an anti-Android litany with far more valid points than my IT-engineer of a BIL has managed to bring up at any given holiday dinner over the past seven years³.
These kinds of moments bring me joy, and it's only partially because they make my job easier. It's mostly because it's one of the rare occasions where the elderly reveal what they do with their free time, and, yes, they're all staring death in the face, but some of them are spending the time they have left with something that isn't 24/7 dread.
1. Good sir, we are in Germany. Fax will be pried from this nation's cold, dead, bloody hands, just like "cash only" restaurants and cigarette ads
2. We don't have a website, but we have an app; she doesn't have a smartphone, she has a tablet--is it compatible with an iPad?
3. T, if you're reading this: Apple has the more user friendly and effective accessibility features across languages. I'm still not paying ten times the price for it.
