Crowdsourcing is the new Black
When supermodel Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s shopping sites and apps failed her, she turned to her 9 million Instagram followers to help her in her mission for a two-year-old Celine coat. Her followers jumped into action immediately spreading out globally until Arizona-based blogger Sandra Sauceda introduced Rosie to the work of Gabriel Waller, a personal shopper known for tracking down rare designer items. Waller reached out to her Denmark connections who located the exact piece and in less than a month, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley had her 2-year-old Celine coat. Beauty brands Glossier and Volition are now turning to crowdsourcing to determine what products they’ll make next. It’s a great success now spreading in the beauty industry: Weiss consults with the beauty community before launching new products and in return followers and fan’s loyalty levels increase as they feel part of the process and sales ultimately increase. Crowdsourcing, according to Merrian Webster Online, is the practice of obtaining needed services, ideas, or content by soliciting contributions from a large group of people and especially from the online community rather than from traditional employees or suppliers (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/crowdsourcing). To be more relevant for social networks, crowdsourcing is using the power of the internet and social media to virtually harness the power of individuals and bring them together; it has helped start projects, new business initiatives and engage large numbers of people to solve a complex problem (Riccardi 2016, International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction).
When new start-up brand ‘EverybodyWorld’ launched last year, their mission statement was literally to make sustainable clothing with a crowdsourced spirit. The label began their company with collaborations from friends of friends, then to famous friends such as Adwoa Aboah and Jean Pigozzi, and then reached out into the social media world for collaborations. Most recently they called for submissions for unisex shoe designs. As they explained ““It’s thrilling for us to connect with new people who we ordinarily might not cross paths with. We love to see new points of view, to learn about someone else’s life, and see how their experiences translate into a garment that is missing from their wardrobe.” Crowdsourcing is growing in the fashion and beauty industry and it’s only getting better as brand loyalty increases and interest and desire grow.
Moreover, crowdsourcing is not just for the beauty world, in fact crowdsourcing is incredibly beneficial and, in some cases, lifesaving, when it comes to natural disasters or tragic world events. Crowdsourcing is used for large-scale disastrous events occurring across the world such as the 2010 Haiti earthquake. During this time, there were services and networks worldwide online, on the phone, television or in person, where people could share information, find information or ask for assistance. Similarly, social mapping such as Facebook’s marking tool allowed people to mark themselves as safe during disasters. People caught up in the middle of one of these events often captured shocking but real and necessary footage that was posted onto social media networks, forwarded to news channels and quickly spread throughout the globe. Everyday people, social media users, are becoming the producers of the content broadcast on national television and news networks. The people are now creating content and are occupying a hybrid position of being both users and what in traditional terms would have to be described loosely as producers: they are produsers (Bruns 2007, https://produsage.org/node/67).
Crowdsourcing engages people and many platforms employ challenges to participate exposing participants to various different problems. This can enhance adaptability and problem-solving skills. Crowdsourcing is about passions, talents, skills and tangible resources (https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/307438).
