every right thing (ch 1/2).
Read here on ao3.
Rating: M
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Emily Prentiss/Aaron Hotchner
Summary: Five times they asked each other to stay, and one time they didn't need to. (A little exploration of their relationship in the same universe as reckless (just enough).)
Chapter Excerpt:
Louise picks Maya up, and they stand in the doorway and wave goodbye until Emily’s back in the car, taking a steadying breath before starting to drive.
“You okay?” Hotch asks.
“Yeah, it just. . .” She hesitates as the familiar choice presents itself again: soft, or cold? “It. . . never stops feeling like leaving a part of myself behind.”
“Then you always have a part of yourself to come back to,” Hotch says. “That’s not a bad thing.”
Emily glances over at him and finds him frowning, staring down at his hands and twisting his wedding ring around on his finger. “Are you okay?” she asks.
She doesn’t really expect him to answer, but he clears his throat, takes a second before speaking softly. “I don’t know,” he says, turning his gaze toward the window. “We’ll see what I come back to.”

I'm still processing 7-13, in the meantime have this super quick thing! of all the things that happened that I didn't expect, one of 'em certainly was a not insignificant subplot revolving around Silver unintentionally committing international mail fraud.

I think that “Anakin was a slave child who was groomed by Palpatine and raised by someone who wasn’t ready to take on a child, thereby leaving him in a social limbo state where he’s surrounded by people but only has a few close confidants, with the one he trusts the most actively trying to take advantage of him”
and
“Anakin was taught right from wrong from a young age, first by his mother and then by Kenobi, but any time he was presented with a choice, actively CHOSE WRONG EVERY SINGLE TIME”
are two sentences that can, should, and MUST coexist to fully understand Anakin Skywalker as a character

listen. i know it's not 2014 anymore and i know it's just a throwaway line and that the russo brothers didnt intend for marvel action blockbuster captain america the winter soldier to become the tragic gay love story that never was but man. having steve say "it's kind of hard to find someone with shared life experience" in a conversation about romantic relationships right before the bucky reveal is so cruel. it's not just about steve and bucky obviously having the shared experience of being "out of time," it's the fact that they've both been stripped of their humanity in opposite directions. steve is a legend, he is an american hero and a national icon before he is a human being the same way that bucky is a weapon and a killing machine before he is a human being. steve knows that anyone who falls in love with him in the 21st century fell in love with captain america first, and that's just not him. but then the one person who knew him first and knew him best and loved him (not captain america, that little guy from brooklyn) so much he died for it is alive, impossibly. and it's a miracle because he's back and it's horrific because he's back under the worst possible circumstances. but to steve, the winter soldier is worth tearing the world apart for because he's always been bucky first. they find each other and suddenly they're human again. and maybe, despite it all, being "out of time" becomes a blessing, because in this century they'd finally be allowed to love each other the way they've always wanted to. like real people do.
like. no. the captain america trilogy isn't about two queer men traumatized and alienated by war and modern life rediscovering and reclaiming their humanity through their love for each other. but. i mean. it couldve been

Great news for uninsured adults in the USA who want a COVID-19 booster! It now appears that ALL CVS locations are now active participants in the Bridge Access Program. The Bridge Access Program gives out free Covid-19 vaccinations to 18+ adults who otherwise can't afford one, so if you have a CVS near you, please go get one! For others who don't have a CVS near them, please go to vaccines.gov, click on "Find Covid-19 vaccines", fill out which vaccines you prefer (you can mix different vaccines if you have to so i reccomend just marking all of them for the age groups you need), and when the next page loads mark the "Bridge Access Program Participant" option to see only locations that are Bridge Access Program participants. Hopefully, other places that aren't CVS will start participating soon, so just check back every so often to see if there are any updates. The CDC Bridge Access Program website also has more details on what locations will be participating, but only CVS is appearing as an active participant on the vaccines.gov location finder at the moment.

Relationships: Emily Prentiss/Aaron Hotchner
Summary: Five times they asked each other to stay, and one time they didn't need to. (A little exploration of their relationship in the same universe as reckless (just enough).)
Chapter Excerpt: “We were kids,” she says eventually. “John and I made the same stupid decision, and I. . . was left to deal with it. In 1980s Rome, of all places.”
The dots join themselves immediately, and his chest aches with grief for the girl in the photograph. “I’m sorry.”
“Matthew just. . . loved me, when nobody else did.” Her voice is painfully vulnerable, but she keeps his eyes on his, fingers digging into his hand. “He made everything possible for me, and it took his whole future away from him.”
He shakes his head automatically. “It’s. . .” not your fault is right on the tip of his tongue, and she tenses, waiting for it. “It’s not fair,” he says instead.
“No, it’s not,” she agrees, starting to tremble with the effort it’s taking to keep herself together. “So what the fuck do I do now?”

★ what was the scene you most wanted to write in every right thing will find the right place? what was the hardest scene to write?
Thanks for the ask! I really appreciate it.
I will be honest, every right thing was conceived and written in a haze over the course of five days and while it is very, very dear to me - I don't necessarily remember the details of actually writing it!
But doing my best to piece it together - I think I was really excited about the set up, where Nigel doesn't know what's going on yet. It's always fun to know more than your character, and from what I remember it was a fun challenge to try and describe childbirth from the point of view of a character who doesn't know it's happening at first.
As for hardest - idk what was actually the hardest to write, but I know that I went back and forth several times over whether to include the hospital scenes at the end. I'm still not sure if keeping them was the best decision.

Yes you’re not fatphobic but are you capable of talking about fat people in a positive manner without saying somft/round/rotund/squishy/tumby/chumby/any other variation of the sort. Are you capable of talking about us in a positive manner without it being about beauty or attractiveness. Are you able to talk about fat people in general without being dehumanizing or infantilizing. Can you treat fat people with respect.

"don't make it political!" .... what proportion of death and suffering must occur before politics are involved. if this isn't political, what is even the point of any politics, ever. of democracy. the words are "by the people for the people." if i am going to be left alone by my elected representatives to "figure it out" - to undergo damage, hardship, fear. what the fuck did i elect them for. what was their job. the entire point is that they handle this shit. this is why we were supposed to be electing leaders.
poverty is political. misogyny is political. gun control is political. climate change is political. how much aid a community gets is political. what the fuck are you talking about. it's been political this whole fucking time.

So much more of the natural world feels close and accessible now. When I started birding, I remember thinking that I’d never see most of the species in my field guide. Sure, backyard birds like robins and western bluebirds would be easy, but not black skimmers or peregrine falcons or loggerhead shrikes. I had internalized the idea of nature as distant and remote — the province of nature documentaries and far-flung vacations. But in the past six months, I’ve seen soaring golden eagles, heard duetting great horned owls, watched dancing sandhill cranes and marveled at diving Pacific loons, all within an hour of my house. “I’ll never see that” has turned into “Where can I find that?”
