[Chapter 1: The Anderson Place]
In the town where I grew up, there's a story about a ghost. The ghost is a boy that died of yellow fever a century ago, and as the story goes, the boy had been raised by the town's children. He would tell stories of a little girl he saw in a window, and each time he went to tell the story, the boy would be shot by the girl. He died, and when he was buried in the cemetery, the girl was still there. She kept waiting for him. And each time, he would be shot again."
"When he was dead and gone, her mind turned to killing. She made sure that he got it over with first."
The boy's name was William H. Anderson, and the girl was his mother's first cousin, Anna Anderson. He was a good, obedient boy, who had never been to jail. He was also, by all accounts, a quiet, quiet kid, as far as these things go.
His life ended abruptly, as did the life of three other children and the lives of their parents, on January 14, 1891, when Anderson was just 7 years old. The only hint of this tragic event in his life was that the coroner reported that Anderson was found "lying by a pool of blood." He was found, as usual, near the pool of blood by his father. The coroner concluded that Anderson had suffered a heart attack.
The coroner's office had no record of a heart attack. However, the coroner's office, after years of work, found that Anderson had a series of unexplained strokes of death that occurred on the same date as the fatal heart attack. Anderson was also given a medical history at the time of his death, but the medical report indicated that he had suffered a stroke of death.
Anybody who grows up in Eversberg knows the story of Anderson and the stroke of death. We just thought it was bullshit. That said, it didn't stop the old Anderson place from falling to ruin. As the years passed, the house sagged. People agreed the air around the place was colder and still, as though even the wind couldn't bear to pass by the place.  Eventually the roof collapsed in on itself, leaving the place a little more desolate than it was when it was all new.   Anderson's name was on every door in town. I mean every door.  People were just walking in and out of the house at all hours of the day and night. A few nights ago, as I was walking through town, I passed by a man standing in a doorway of the old Anderson place.
"Where the fuck do you think you're going?" he yelled, "I thought you were trying to find a whore! She's out there in the alley, she's a whore!" "Oh, no," I said, "I don't think so. What kind of a whore would I be?" He glared at me with his ugly black eyes, as though I was some kind of criminal.
"Hey," I said, and then looked away, "I'd appreciate it if you'd just leave me alone." He didn't stop staring. "Well, okay then. Thanks." He turned and started to walk off, but I didn't have to say another word. I watched him go.
"Hey, uh, hey."
The man turned around. "Hello."
I didn't say anything for a long moment. "Hey, you."
"You."
"You."
"You."
"You."
"You."
I stared down at my feet. "You're going to do it again?"
"What?"
"You've been staring at me for a while now. What are you going to do?"
"I didn't do anything. I've always been friendly to you."
"You have?"
"Of course, don't you forget that. I'm a friendly, nice guy. But what do you want?"
I stared at him, dumbfounded.
"I want you to be your best friend again. I want you to become the best friend you ever had. Because I can see right through you now." He smiled. "You're a great guy, and I'm proud of you. I'll always be there for you. I promise you that."
I froze.
"That's my promise. But what if I can't be? You're my first love, and I know what it's like not to be in love, what it's like to be single."
"I'll get you back."
I took a step closer. "I know you will. I'm sure of it."
He shook his head and smiled. "No, no. I'm going to take a stand against it."
I nodded. "You have my respect, Blake."
He smiled. "And my gratitude."
I leaned down and hugged him. "You have everything you need. All I ask is that you believe in me and give me a chance. I promise I'll make the world better."
I hugged him back. He squeezed my shoulders and kissed my forehead.
I smiled and wiped the tears from my eyes. I didn't want to think of anything else. I felt safe. And it was a little bit lonely, but I could do that. The world didn't have anything else to offer, and I would make it better. It wasn't worth worrying about my own loneliness.
I closed my eyes and thought of nothing for a long time.
The next day I found out that ten minutes after speaking to me, Blake had walked into the Anderson place. He hasn't been heard from since. For the first time in a long time, people started to talk about about the stroke.

#янетакаякаквсе (at Burg Eversberg)
