A glorious natural wonder to many, a forbidding mix of wetlands, forests, mosquitos and alligators to others, Everglades National Park in Florida has always evoked strong reactions in people. Generations of Calusa and Seminole people lived in harmony with the Everglades, often using the wilderness as a refuge. While many were devastated by disease or forcibly relocated, Native Americans still living in the area continue to be an important part of the area's story. I was recently asked what my favorite (big 62) National Park was - part two. ⠀ . . . It took me a minute, to wrap my head around the question, because each is beautiful and unique. But it wasn’t really hard. White Sands, followed by the Everglades and Joshua tree. Those are unlikely choices by many, but each of them have a peacefulness and simplicity not found anywhere else.⠀ . . . Cypress domes form when pond cypress grow in shallow standing water. The ground level in the center of the dome may be several inches to a few feet lower than at the edge of the dome, but tree growth is more vigorous at the center of the dome. Thus, the treetops are higher at the center than at the edge of the dome. 📍: Everglades National Park 📅 : January 2017 #nationalparkgeek #IBrakeForBrownSigns #evergladesnps #hashtagflorida (at Everglades National Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-p0fJUFc5U/?igshid=1s0pv98xli5jc

Happy #NationalBirdDay! Bird watching is one of my pastimes and living next to @evergladesnps makes that endeavor all the more fruitful. I don’t think it’s a surprise to anyone that EVER’s Barred Owls are among my favorite subjects to photograph, among others. When I was in 4th grade I wanted to be an ornithologist. 20 years later.... it didn’t exactly happen but I’m still happy that my love of owls endures. : : #Everglades #evergladesnp #evergladesnationalpark #evergladesnps #miami #florida #igersenp #igersbigcypress #FindYourPark #GoParks #usinterior #experienceyouramerica #americasbestidea #protectpubliclands #protectingparks #naturephotousa #natparkexplorer #optoutside #monumentsforall #sharetheexperience #nationalpark #nationalparkgeek #ibrakeforbrownsigns #nationalparkobsessed #owl #owls #barredowl #owlsofinstagram #audobonsociety (at Pahayokee Trail Everglades) https://www.instagram.com/p/BsQYeHNne-M/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1ed7bhyww09rf

Reposted from @evergladesnps Habitat loss is a main reason species that live on land become endangered. For this Endangered Species Day, we recognize an Everglades habitat that is disappearing. The Pine Rocklands, also called the Pinelands, have hard rocky ground, made up of limestone. The pinelands are found on higher ground and a bit of elevation makes all the difference here! This makes it a dry habitat, unlike the majority of the Everglades. They are extremely unique -- the ‪Long Pine Key‬ area in ‪Everglades National Park‬ holds around 80% of all remaining pine rockland found in Florida This globally imperiled habitat is a hotspot for plant biodiversity and is home to several federally listed endangered species such as Florida prairieclover and our state mammal, the Florida panther, as well as federally threatened species, like Garber's spurge and the Eastern indigo snake. I guess we're calling the largest wilderness east of the Mississippi, home to panthers, crocodiles, manatees, and over 350 kinds of birds, "nothing" now. @evergladesnps

#PleinAirpril Day 24/30 “Everglades National Park, Florida” gouache on paper 4”x6” National Park Week is April 17-25, so I will be featuring some of the majesty of this country’s National Parks. For the eighth day of National Park Week, I painted one of the resident alligators taking a rest in Everglades National Park. The park plays an integral part in conservation, as it protects 20 of Florida’s original Everglades. The park is home to manatees, crocodiles, pythons, storks, and ospreys. This is the twenty-fourth painting of an intensive thirty day painting challenge hosted by the @warriorpainters. All of my paintings are available for sale, and will be listed on my website as they are made available. If you are interested in one of my pieces, feel free to send me a message. And if you have a photo you would like for me to paint, also feel free to send me a message. “A little over a year ago I had the opportunity to spend a week at @oysterbamboo building my own bamboo fly rod by hand. It was an experience that changed me and got me back to my roots; building things with my hands. Last year I planned to catch permit in Oman, salmon and char in Iceland, Tarpon and bonefish in the Keys, and lots of trout, sook and reds locally. COVID screwed all of that up. Recently I got down to @evergladesnps and got my first tarpon on bamboo. @jims298 and I had a pretty epic trip. It was worth the wait. Thanks to Bill and staff at Oyster for sharing their knowledge and love for their craft. Don’t forget to support your local fly shops and craftspeople like @compoundflyfishing ⁣@toweeboats ⁣@skinnywaterculture ⁣@tiborreels⁣ “ ~ ⁣@thejoshwynne ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ Honor to be included! ⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣#SkinnyWaterCulture #HCFT #BornWildLivinFree⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ #CompoundFlyShop #ToweeBoats #TiborReels #NightOrDayBlueSkiesOrGrey⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ https://www.instagram.com/p/CMvQrYRlV9o/?igshid=1ntv73gxw82z8

Tall trees are a reminder to take time to marvel at the sky. At Everglades National Park in Florida, Long Pine Key Trail explores the Pine Rocklands and weaves through majestic trees and palmettos. From sawgrass prairie and marsh to freshwater sloughs and mangrove habitat, Everglades National Park has an enchanting array of habitats and is one of the world's most extensive wetlands. Kayaking, birding, biking, boating, camping and hiking offer ways to enjoy Florida's sunshine and are popular activities -- especially during the dry season. Happy birthday @evergladesnps! ⠀ ⠀ The first written record of the Everglades was on Spanish maps made by cartographers who had not seen the land. They named the unknown area between the Gulf and Atlantic coasts of Florida Laguna del Espíritu Santo ("Lake of the Holy Spirit"). The area was featured on maps for decades without having been explored. Writer John Grant Forbes stated in 1811, "The Indians represent [the Southern points] as impenetrable; and the [British] surveyors, wreckers, and coasters, had not the means of exploring beyond the borders of the sea coast, and the mouths of rivers".⠀ ⠀ British surveyor John Gerard de Brahm, who mapped the coast of Florida in 1773, called the area "River Glades". Both Marjory Stoneman Douglas and linguist Wallace McMullen suggest that cartographers substituted "Ever" for "River". The name "Everglades" first appeared on a map in 1823, although it was also spelled as "Ever Glades" as late as 1851. The Seminole call it Pahokee, meaning "Grassy Water." The region was labeled "Pa-hai-okee" on a U.S. military map from 1839, although it had earlier been called "Ever Glades" throughout the Second Seminole War. Synchronicity or simply expanded awareness? Yesterday I noticed this poster in the hallway of our rented vacation house. I instantly recognized it as the work of Charley Harper, the same artist I discovered in the Everglades while looking through the archives and objects in holdings. For me, this is the equivalent of learning a new word--suddenly you see and hear the word everywhere. Every artist has his or her own fingerprint, but Harper's is instantly recognizable to the once-initiated. #evergladesnps #obx #airieverglades (at Duck Beach, OBX)
