I don't know I'm not done talking about it. It's insane that I can't just uninstall Edge or Copilot. That websites require my phone number to sign up. That people share their contacts to find their friends on social media.

I wouldn't use an adblocker if ads were just banners on the side funding a website I enjoy using and want to support. Ads pop up invasively and fill my whole screen, I misclick and get warped away to another page just for trying to read an article or get a recipe.

Every app shouldn't be like every other app. Instagram didn't need reels and a shop. TikTok doesn't need a store. Instagram doesn't need to be connected to Facebook. I don't want my apps to do everything, I want a hub for a specific thing, and I'll go to that place accordingly.

I love discord, but so much information gets lost to it. I don't want to join to view things. I want to lurk on forums. I want to be a user who can log in and join a conversation by replying to a thread, even if that conversation was two days ago. I know discord has threads, it's not the same. I don't want to have to verify my account with a phone number. I understand safety and digital concerns, but I'm concerned about information like that with leaks everywhere, even with password managers.

I shouldn't have to pay subscriptions to use services and get locked out of old versions. My old disk copy of photoshop should work. I should want to upgrade eventually because I like photoshop and supporting the business. Adobe is a whole other can of worms here.

Streaming is so splintered across everything. Shows release so fast. Things don't get physical releases. I can't stream a movie I own digitally to friends because the share-screen blocks it, even though I own two digital copies, even though I own a physical copy.

I have an iPod, and I had to install a third party OS to easily put my music on it without having to tangle with iTunes. Spotify bricked hardware I purchased because they were unwillingly to upkeep it. They don't pay their artists. iTunes isn't even iTunes anymore and Apple struggles to upkeep it.

My TV shows me ads on the home screen. My dad lost access to eBook he purchased because they were digital and got revoked by the company distributing them. Hitman 1-3 only runs online most of the time. Flash died and is staying alive because people love it and made efforts to keep it up.

I have to click "not now" and can't click "no". I don't just get emails, they want to text me to purchase things online too. My windows start search bar searches online, not just my computer. Everything is blindly called an app now. Everything wants me to upload to the cloud. These are good tools! But why am I forced to use them! Why am I not allowed to own or control them?

No more!!!!! I love my iPod with so much storage and FLAC files. I love having all my fics on my harddrive. I love having USBs and backups. I love running scripts to gut suck stuff out of my Windows computer I don't want that spies on me. I love having forums. I love sending letters. I love neocities and webpages and webrings. I will not be scanning QR codes. Please hand me a physical menu. If I didn't need a smartphone for work I'd get a "dumb" phone so fast. I want things to have buttons. I want to use a mouse. I want replaceable batteries. I want the right to repair. I grew up online and I won't forget how it was!

Tumblr seems to be sliding in a downward spiral, and it feels like the start of the end of a fandoming era for me. I've been through it before; platforms are born then die, and life fandom finds a way. I'm just not looking forward to floundering for a bit, and dreading what the next hub will look like.

AO3 isn't really a place geared or meant for the same thing, and that's fine. My only fandom-related activity took place on AO3 only for a few years between my leaving LJ and joining Tumblr, and I lived ;-) But during that time, I was my own little island in fandom. Reading, leaving a few comments, not being super active. It's only when I found a community again that I was back to being really active in fandom once more.

And it's not that I actually use Tumblr to post about myself, but I do use it to read and reblog cool things - art, gifsets, science stuff, discovering new fandoms, and the like. I'm not sure where else I could find my people, with sameish purposes. The other sites I've tried didn't fill that niche in a way that suited me, in part because of how they look and work, in part because of who and what is(n't) there.

I have DW & PF accounts just to be safe, but I'm not very fond of group chats Discord-style - and without Tumblr, IDK how I'd even hear of new communities where I might pop in once in a while, loins girdled and everything. The micro-blogging platforms are not what I'm looking for either. Sure, I can follow a few DW comms and blogs; I already occasionally do and I will be more consistent about it if I must.

But one of my greatest fear is that the next platform will be phone-based, app-only, or some such BS - and that is something I just won't be able to deal with. Phones are tiny, it's uncomfortable to write anything, I don't like touch screen and much, much prefer a proper keyboard and a mouse (copy-pasting on a screen? (x_x) << it me), art/pics are too small to properly appreciate, a phone isn't comfy to hold for a long time for me, and the app system means you have no control over anything as a user… and that anything there must be Apple Approved, dick-free, blood-free, and tasteless. And I say this as someone who's pretty much uninterested in sex IRL or in my entertainment ;-) I still support and want the tits, the gore, the everything, and as long as I have the tools to curate - oh, wait. Curate things myself? That's not something that's popular these days, is it? It's not going to generate money, if I'm happy ;-)

So… I guess I'll play some more on Neocities, and see if anyone wants to have webrings again? (it would be fun and nostalgic, but not really viable on a large scale; people who haven't known those would just laugh and point and go on the InstaTok of the time).

So here is my little cane-waving rant of the day! I know things evolve and change and that in ten years I'll be rolling my eyes at my moping. It's only that I feel tired of moving from one shitty platform to another, of fearing I won't adapt (or more accurately won't want to adapt given the annoyance/benefit ratio) to whichever new place things will move in a few years. It's saying goodbye to a former home, moving, and hoping you'll make another home elsewhere kind of sniffles today!

We already know the next platform. It has been Discord for a few years now.

If you want the one after Discord, I think you're looking at waiting things out for quite a few years (or until Discord makes a major misstep as a company).

True, real time chat is not for everyone, but small discords with well-chosen channels can operate more asynchronously. Just like a lot of people who hated the look of Tumblr early on eventually capitulated, a lot of chat haters have jumped ship to Discord already.

Realistically, 90% of fandom always goes where the action is, no matter how much they claim the features make that space impossible, and 10% disappears.

We might get the 10% back on the next platform or they might leave fandom for good. There were LJ-haters who resurfaced post LJ era.

But as for where you'll find out where people are... probably AO3 author's notes.

My art year in review!

I learned so much this year and made a ton of cool stuff! These are my favorites from each month, but it was so hard to choose. A lot of stuff didn't even get posted--I'll be sure to at least post the ones that made it to this list!

It's amazing to see how much I've changed and learned over this year, and to see the things that are emerging as part of "my style."

Here's to another year of delight, creation, connection and fun!

Some monthly reflections beneath the cut, but here's the highlights:

I participated in 3 art challenges, Artfight, OC-tober and Huevember.

I made fanart for the first time!

I created a piece I conceived of before I started drawing

Made some big breakthroughs in techniques and skills in April, July and November

January: My first branch into full character design, Rodd is the culmination of training on Hero Forge renders to make dnd portraits! I was doing this cool thing with neon rim lighting, I should bring that back!

February: I saw a piece on here with this amazing glowing effect, so I color picked it and experimented to figure out what relationship between the colors was making it do that! The answer was saturation. This rose is meant to be glowing from within, and I think I did a good job for my knowledge level at the time! As Chuck Tingle would tell us, it's beautiful because only I could have made it in that moment on the timeline.

March: I spent a million years on every detail of this one, it has at least 5 clipping overlay/saturation layers for lighting, multiple line work groups and I want to rework that background but! I never felt more accomplished than I did when I finished this one. I learned a lot, especially about things I could skip or simplify. And the symbolism really pops off ngl

April: I read Gideon the Ninth for the first time this month and I immediately needed to draw Jeannemary Chatur, Cavalier of the Fourth House, the worst teen to do it. She's the first fanart I ever made and posted! I also discovered a new pen tool with this one, which CHANGED THE GAME.

May: This one is an idea I had written down before I ever picked up the tablet and stylus. I thought I might commission someone to make it, the image of it came to me so clearly during our VTM session I just had to make it real somehow. Well I did it! This is one I will come back to redraw in like 5 years bc I love the concept so much. Also rife with symbolism and inside nods to the Low Kings.

June: I made a bunch of ref sheets in the run-up to Artfight in July. Caleb hadn't even been in my plans to upload, but I had time and inspiration! I will be uploading this and a few more of him <3

July: This is one of my faves from Artfight! This character is Blueberry, by way of OrchidEatsBread on artfight. I have still never played... rainworld? But I love me a slug cat. In July I drew a TON of people, it really drilled anatomy basics into me and how to get clothes looking like actual clothes a bit more. Also solidified some things I would consider "my style" at the moment, like no irises, and my approach to noses and mouths and fingers!

August: Another fanart for the Locked Tomb series, I never posted this!!! Will be rectifying that soon.

September: I got really into javascript and css this month, and I made this to be a landing page image on my neocities website XD I'll get back around to that eventually...

October: At the last minute, I discovered OC-tober and the prompts from @/bweirdart, a worthy follow up to the rush of Artfight two months previous. I developed so much stuff for the Low Kings, including this drawing/character, Amayah/Girl-Z, who has been a figment of my pintrest board for 2+ years.

Huevember: Chasing that OC-tober high, I found Huevember! I did not expect to actually do every day, but it proved to be an amazing exercise! I learned so, so much about color, discovered amazing new brushes and techniques and found I really enjoy working in those one day capsules! I loved a lot of the stuff that came out of this month, including my highest note post ever!!!, but this one is still my phone background and I'm maybe developing an OC world around it. We'll see what happens in 2024.

December: I got hit HARD with the writing bug this month, so this was my only choice for this month but I WOULDA CHOSEN IT ANYWAY. I unlocked something here that I'm really excited to visit again, in fact I'm working on a companion piece rn! This is also fanart btw, prepare for me to get even weirder about this guy in the coming months.

Gonna try to use this tumblr a bit more to post thoughts and such. Twitter is imploding and so many people are jumping ship, so I might move back to using this as my "main" (kind of)

I don't have an interest in getting a bluesky or whatever (maybe will get a cohost eventually but not any time soon) but I AM hoping to dedicate a lot more time to my neocities! I've been playing around learning coding (I do not know how computers work so it has been a journey) and I'm hoping to have a full revamp of it done sometime this month, all prettied up with hand-drawn assets!! Maybe not with every page filled out right away tho.

Eventually I'll also update my portfolio site but I'm not suuuper worried about that since I'm not actively looking for work or anything. Gotta get into drawing more regularly before I can even dream of doing that, and to be honest I'm still not 100% on if I'd even want to do art as my main day job.

What is Overmorrow?

Overmorrow began as a worldbuilding project, developed into a writing project aimed at the eventual creation of a novel, and went in like 10 different directions minimum over the course of about 5 years up until now. Currently, Overmorrow is intended to take the form of a text adventure - which is what I'll be posting about on here!

What's it about?

Overmorrow is a sci-fi/fantasy story set in the fictional world of Paneia. You can find more detailed info about that in this carrd: https://yesternight.carrd.co/#overmorrow , which I'm using as a kind of placeholder wiki (until I eventually get around to putting it on its own site, I guess, but that's pretty low priority rn)

In terms of story, Overmorrow takes place following the death of a character who then comes back as a ghost. In this world, ghosts are a fairly average part of life - not super common, but also not unexpected, and not generally regarded as dangerous or malicious, either. You play as the ghost. You don't remember your past as a living person, but a lot of the people around you do; ultimately, Overmorrow is a story about identity, change, and mourning, and how those things can interact and conflict.

It's also, like, about space and speculative biology and borderline-thaumaturgical magic systems and stuff. We stay silly :]

How long will it take to fully release?

Probably years. Sorry. Got a lot going on in my life right now, so as much as I'd like to devote most of my time to writing and coding, I... Have neither the time nor energy to do so.

Rest assured that at no point do I intend to abandon Overmorrow entirely. It's my baby and it's like, easily half a decade old by now. I love it to death! It's just incredibly slow going.

The good news: I do have a finalised plot outline, and I'm really trying to stick with it and not change it too drastically this time. It's coherent! Cohesive! It has common themes and an actual planned ending! Wow! Revolutionary!!

Other info:

Even though it's not done yet, once you get to whatever point in the story that's the current "end point", you'll be able to return to the main intro/menu, where you'll find a page displaying your accumulated stats. Some of these involve actual planned gameplay mechanics, but some of them are just for sillies - I have intentions to create some joke achievements you'll be able to unlock in the finished version, but for now they're just kind of... There.

The first chapter of Overmorrow is a pretty linear path. It's main divergences are just differences in how you experience a scene, without any changes to actual plot. This is deliberate! I don't want readers to become too confused right from the get-go, so chapter one is basically just... Orientation. An introduction to the world and how things function. Etc

So it's been a while. I wanted to make these weekly but oooh time passes me by babeyyyy.

For real.

One thing I've realized is that I take a loooot more time than other people to /process/ stuff. Whatever it might be, a crush, a fight with a family member or even an acquaintance, new topics to learn, CLEANING, I will need two days minimum to actually start doing/reflecting/whatever. I've literally counted the days. It's two, minimum. I don't know what to do with that info.

So, in the meantime I've literally consumed so much content that I have some to bring here.

I'm still listening to newjeans, a LOT. I don't know really know a lot about them but what I do know is that they can make a tune!! What's ur ETA!!

Also. I've been thinking about painting my door white. I have to buy the stuff but in my country we have a three day holiday so I'm not gonna be able to buy anything until TUESDAY. I might just lose interest.

I know it's not gonna look /exactly like this/ but *will graham voice* this is my design. It *is* cute.

I also have some ideas that I would like to make time to do eventually.

- practice css (I picked it up a couple of months ago, panicked and left my vsc and my neocities to rot).

- learn to make eclairs. with those little metal things that give them shape. (I don't have them... If I have some money left from the paint I just might buy them). My idea was to make a list of recipes and learn them "in order" but I don't have the first idea about patisserie so I'll just search by vibes.

- finish my popcorn stitch pouch. Like I started BUT I don't have enough yarn, and knowing me I'd leave it for another two days before I even start thinking about going to the store. It's so cute even though I only made one row 😭😭😭😭 I wanted to do the tulip thingy that was popular at one point but I don't have green yarn 🤪🤪

Soooo, enough of me for this week (?) Obviously I did more normal stuff (partially true) but I'm not telling!!

Update/Where to find my other stuff

Hi there. Won't be too many of these, just want to lay down a few (good) things for what's moving forward.

1- Unless I've forgotten something, I've posted all of my old twitter threads I wanted saved!!! At this point I'm cross posting newer things I find worthy from my twitter to here.

2- That also mean less longer posts, as I keep most of that to my blog/website rn. Not to say these won't appear, just not in the cards. I have been considering posting some of the blogs here eventually. (If I still like them later. And they fit the vibe of this tumblr really well.)

3- I would like to make some more posts playing to the strengths of this site, but idk what I'd like to do. That's more of a thought.

4- Most of my web/writing plans this year is for fiction. (Posted to my site rn, if I post it at all.) So, I've been wondering if I should talk more abt writing on here. I do sometimes on my other socials, but this place isn't short enough to be tweets, isn't big enough to be a blog. (To my taste aesthetically.) At the end of the day I just do what I want. Full transparency, since I've rarely mentioned my fiction up till now.

5- As for writing itself I have a monthly story called simple carnivorous behavior I post on my neocities. There's some other ideas I'm working on... In the short term I'd like to get another short story out. I won't be posting work here, just links. I also try to get a blog post out once a month. (Try as in causal. This is just a hobby, no need to stress myself.) Maybe one day I'll make a blog or smth on why I post my "main stuff" there, but in short, html site cool.

6- General reminder: This tumblr will be tame, but if you go to my other socials sometimes I talk abt darker topics that isn't gonna be everyone's cup of tea. I'll do my best to give warnings when needed. This is more of a general reminder that this can happen. I feel the need to give a heads up since this tumblr page is probably my cleanest social. Don't expect anything wild though. I don't host any H accounts or anything like that. I just think it's fair to mention this.

It has come to my attention that my blog is a sort of go-to for Guilty Gear scans. Unfortunately, my blog is a cluttered hovel. Here is what I've worked on, what I'm going to work on, and what I do not have the material with which to work on.

Some stuff before the juicy bits: Yes, the Brisket <3 meme started here. My Japanese is self taught so I'm probably making a bunch of mistakes but I go back and polish up old translations regularly. These scans/translations are done as a hobby. I've been doing this since I started Begin sometime around December 2021. Real life stuff has priority so the deadline for everything here is "when I get to it."

🔥 Guilty Gear Xrd (Revelator) Visual Book - Small art book included in the special edition release of XrdRev in Europe and Japan. This is a scan of the European book, which is in English (mostly). These scans were done by @birthdaytrain and I only compiled it into a .PDF for Archive.

🔥Dengeki PlayStation F, Volume 10 (October 13, 1995) - Volume 19 of the Japanese gaming magazine, Dengeki PlayStation. Has an article on what appears to be the first printed appearance of any sort of Guilty Gear 1 material. Very early prototype stuff in this.

🔥Dengeki PlayStation F2, April Special Issue, Volume 19 ( April 10, 1996) - Volume 19 of the Japanese gaming magazine, Dengeki PlayStation. Has an article on an early build of GG Missing Link. This issue also has articles for Final Fantasy 7, Tekken 2, Street Fighter Zero, Darkstalkers, and a lot more.

🔥Magic In Your Eyes (Japanese, BL doujinshi, SFW, 32p) - Sol/Ky doujinshi from 2004 by Rima Setsura. Its plot revolves around cooking, shenanigans, and amazing facial expressions; overall very lighthearted. A lot of the rest of the cast also make appearances. Google Docs has been placing images with a slight white border along the top and left sides of the page lately. I'll update this .PDF once I fix it. Will eventually be translated.

FAQ //

Can I use scans/translations for stuff?: You can use them for any personal/non-commercial projects like icons, banners, blog themes, etc. Credit is nice, but not required. 

How long does stuff take?: Begin took about 6 months exactly, Artworks of GGX took a little over 8 months, the Overture short stories take 1-2 entire days, so like maybe 8-15 hours of work.

How long have you been into Guilty Gear?: I heard Holy Orders from GGXX in 2013 and was fully consumed by the disease when I watched my friend play Strive in August 2021.

WHAT ABOUT BLAZBLUE? //

I don't go to Blazblue but maybe one day after I run out of Guilty Gear stuff or my brain finally melts and pours out of my eyes from Google Doc radiation exposure I'll get around to it. My buddy @smellpelt made a compilation post of the work Daisuke did for Blazblue though, over here.

Question for the gifs on your neocities - where did you find them, or did you make them? Also, where do you get inspo for your designs? I’m highly considering making myself a proper on neocities (made one long ago, didn’t put shit in it) and use it as a portfolio and art gallery maybe :] but I also don’t know where to find ideas o(-(

A lot of the pixels and stuff are found usually from Japanese websites I traverse, or I saved them from other people who posted them ^_^ When I make my own graphics (which usually are just real things edited) I use ezgif to put the frames/images all into one and edit the speed, etc of the gif ^_^

For inspo, I really just like looking at some other people's work or at old websites ^__^ for general websites I like looking at neocities' or archived geocities' websites... for themes I like looking at other theme's people made, or even general websites can be inspiring for a theme ^_^ all in all, what helps is just finding some work you like and trying to find your own style. Think about all the stuff you want your website to have, and try to find a way to put it all together !!

For portfolio's specifically, I recommend looking at some other people's as well ^_^ maybe you can get inspired and throw together all your ideas to make something new ~
