The Golden Halla | 1
Tumblr media
** Cross-posted on AO3 **
Pairing: Cullen Rutherford x F!OC
Summary:Ā The Inquisition has been sent a gift of thanks for assisting the Dalish clan in the Exalted Plains - a Golden Halla, said only to appear in times of need. However, the creature is much more than it appears to be.
A/N: I had a couple requests to put this on here as well for those that prefer to read it that way.Ā Okay, here we go with a new series that we totally shouldn't be making since I have tons of other things to work on. However, this idea wouldn't leave my mind and I've been obsessively thinking about it for three days straight, so we're starting it now. First chapter is a little short, but I was excited. I have lots of plans for this one, and I have quite a few big plot points thought out already, so now it's just a matter of finding the time to get my thoughts on a screen. Hopefully you guys will enjoy and stick around till the end!Ā
Some things to keep in mind:
*I will be messing with timelines and embellishing lore to fit my vision. For example, in this first chapter I'd like you all to pretend that the Inquisitor is strong enough to have already gone to the Exalted Plains and finished gaining the favor of the Dalish. Hey, he's Qunari. It's possible.
*In future chapters I will be expanding on some lore with the Hanal'ghilan and the "Gods" involved with them. If you're a purist, cover your eyes.
* This series will eventually contain smut. If you're a puritan, cover your eyes.
* This author is fueled by comments and feedback. Please don't let me starve, even if it's merely a keyboard smash. Those are a nice snack.
Tumblr media
Truthfully, this wasnā€™t the strangest thing the inquisition had been sent in way of thanks so far, but he found it difficult to figure out the reasoning either way.
ā€œUh...we are grateful? Is it for...err...riding? Or perhaps eating? Iā€™m sorry. Iā€™m not familiar with the custom for this.ā€
Cullen rubbed the back of his neck nervously as he addressed the party before him, wondering for the hundredth time why he was the one sent to deal with this. Surely Josephine would make more sense. Or even Cassandra. The Nightingale? Anyone but him, at least.
The elven man before him appeared horrified at the mention of eating the creature, so he supposed that was out.
ā€œNo! She is Hanal'ghilan, a Golden Halla that appears in times of need. And this one is...especially sacred.ā€ Cullen thought the man had been a little too careful with that wording. ā€œOur keeper thought it best to send her here for safekeeping, along with the wish that the blessing Hanal'ghilan brings shows our thanks for assisting our clan.ā€
Cullen looks at the creature in question who was standing calmly next to the elven man. It appeared...not much different from regular halla, honestly. Perhaps a bit more of a yellow tint to its coat then normal, and bronze horns instead of the usual silver. However, he knew ā€œsacredā€ meant that this creature was just going to spend its days in the stable doing absolutely nothing, growing fat on Havenā€™s precious resources. They couldnā€™t ride it or eat it, so now he supposed the Inquisition has gained its first pet.
ā€œVery well. We accept your...offering. Thank you...errā€¦ā€
ā€œLoranil, Commander. The Inquisitor himself worked with my clan to bring me here. He said to report to you.ā€
Of course he did. The Qunari was becoming overly fond of the phrase ā€˜speak to the Commander.ā€™
ā€œOh, a soldier recruit then. Alright, welcome aboard Loranil. Report to that man over there in blue and heā€™ll get you set up,ā€ he nodded briskly. With another nod at a nearby soldier, he silently ordered him to lead the halla to the stables. Surprisingly, the creature seemed to follow direction well without the need for a lead, following the soldier obediently.
The elven man bellowed what he assumed was a farewell to the animal then started walking towards Rylan, as ordered.
ā€œWait! Loranil, was it? Make sure to stop by the stables and let them know how to care for the halla, if you please.ā€
Loranil bowed his head in acknowledgment and was lost in the sea of bodies crowding the courtyard soon after. Cullen sighed wearily and rubbed his forehead, the beginnings of a headache beginning to make itself known. At least with that bit of ridiculous business done he could escape to his tent for a time. With a quick glance around to assure no one was coming for him, he strode quickly towards his temporary home, only breathing freely again once he tied the cloth shut. He settled into his desk and attacked the evergrowing pile of reports, hoping that losing himself in busy work would distract him from the throbbing in his head.
***
The headache only grew worse. Heā€™d known that quitting the lyrium wouldnā€™t be easy, but he hadnā€™t quite been prepared for the pain. Heā€™d been without for an entire week now and his body was protesting the sudden lack greatly. It was getting hard to hide the increasing number of symptoms as his hands began to shake or his head throbbed to the point he couldnā€™t focus his eyes. Or the incredibly embarrassing occasion three days ago wherein one of his lieutenants barged in on him expelling his breakfast into a chamberpot.
It was now late in the evening, nearing the midnight hour bells he would imagine. The air seemed somewhat crisp and he decided a stroll outside might help him cool off and wind down enough to attempt some sleep tonight.
He dared to leave off his breastplate, not wanting anything restricting his chest right now but pulled on his cloak. Despite his desire to cool off his overheating body, he wasnā€™t fool enough to stride out with barely anything and risk taking truly ill. As he left his tent, he was pleased to see that most people had already retired for the evening, leaving only those assigned to night watch and various workers too busy to pay him any mind.
He roamed about the grounds, hoping he appeared more like he was inspecting for strategic weakness or something else more impressive than taking a midnight stroll. Because he just couldnā€™t help it, he still took a mental tally of things that would need fixing or refilled. The healerā€™s area needed more tents. That elderly couple near a cooking fire needed more blankets. The shoes on that soldierā€™s horse needed replacing.
That, of course, led him to wonder when the last time was he checked on his own mount. Heā€™s been rather bound to Haven of late with little time to ride. She was surely feeling neglected. He switched his path to head towards the stables. He could at least give her a brush and an apple before seeking his bed.
Havenā€™s stables were small and not very sturdy, but seemed comfortable enough for now. If they were here for much longer he was probably going to have them fixed up, but any weather was kept away beyond a slight chill. His horse has been through worse and handled it well. She was Feraldan, after all.
He stopped by the crate of apples kept near the wooden door and grabbed a large one, clicking his tongue as he sauntered towards her stall.
ā€œGrace? Have a treat for you, girl.ā€
The horse whinnied in welcome, shaking her mane as she popped her head over the gate. The bay mare looked like her upkeep has been being taken care of, despite his preoccupation. She nuzzled his shoulder, nipping a bit no doubt to protest his negligence.
ā€œSorry, girl. This nasty business has been pulling my mind all over the place. Iā€™ll take you out for a ride soon, I promise. Perhaps we can go around and check the surrounding area for weakness tomorrow, give you a chance to work some of this building fat off, eh?ā€
Cullen chuckled as she quickly chomped the apple from his hand, giving him a side-eyed look as though to say, ā€˜What fat?ā€™
There was an...unearthly bray in the stall next to hers. Cullen cringed at the sound, suddenly remembering why heā€™d never been very fond of halla. Their cries sounded like a wailing child to him. Cullen sighed and peeked into the other stall, finding the golden halla watching him expectantly.
ā€œI suppose you saw Grace get an apple and now you want one? Can you even eat them? I donā€™t see why not, I suppose.ā€
He walked back to the crate and grabbed another apple and brought it to the halla.
ā€œHere you go Hana...err...gilie? I donā€™t suppose youā€™d settle for Hana, would you? Iā€™m afraid I donā€™t have the tongue for languages.ā€
The halla brayed itā€™s awful sound again, which he took as an agreement. She accepted the apple with much more impressive manners than his mount had, delicately nibbling the offering.
The headache that heā€™d been trying so hard to ignore chose that exact moment to reach a level worse than he had ever experienced. The pain was so sharp and he could feel his head throbbing so mightily he wouldnā€™t be surprised if it would burst. He groaned and clutched at his head, dropping to one knee. He clenched his teeth, willing himself to tough it out.
The halla brayed again, making him almost want to sob. The sound was horrible during a normal time. Currently, it was painful enough it felt as though it was piercing his ears.
Suddenly, there was a bright golden light shining from the hallaā€™s stall. He shaded his eyes with his hand, more worried about the discomfort the light brought with it than the source at the moment.
ā€œYou are hurt! Here, let me help you.ā€
The voice was lovely - soft and calming, with an almost musical quality to it.
His other knee dropped to the floor as his body weakened further. As his vision darkened, he caught a single glimpse of the most beautiful woman heā€™d ever seen in his entire life. Her modesty was only saved by the curtain of snowy white hair covering her bare breasts as she leaned over his falling form. Her amber eyes filled with concern as she reached towards him with a glowing hand - skin bronzed and shimmering as though dusted in gold.
ā€œSleep now,ā€ she whispered, bringing the hand to his forehead.
And then he knew no more, fainting on the straw-covered wood floors of Havenā€™s stable.

shame on me, i saw this just now but thank you for the follow šŸ˜
aha, i did think about howl's moving castle while reading! but i thought it was just me and my obsession with the story haha i'm glad to discover you're a fan as well.
now i'm definitely gonna check out all your stories for october, you got me all excited. your writing really is unique and, well, as a fellow fantasy lover, it suits my tastes.
i know how it feels to doubt your writing and constantly thinking about it. but hey, remember there's always at least one person out there who enjoys it and that maybe you unconsciously have saved someone's day by posting your work here, even if that person isn't giving any feedback (although feedback is recommended, for anyone reading this, pls feel encouraged to share your thoughts after reading something, even if it's a keyboard smash). i was personally kicking my feet while reading the Minho fic! and i predict that i'm gonna love the rest as well.
hope you're having a wonderful day/night šŸ™ƒ
No worries, I'm also delayed in replying to this! Such is life.
Haha nope, Howl's Moving Castle is one of my all time favourite whimsical fantasy reads, so it's easy to say I'm influenced by it. Funnily enough, I'm hosting the buddy read of the final book in that series and I honestly don't grasp what the author was attempting in adding Castle in the Sky and House of Many Ways to the the first book. Yes, they all connect with references and cameo appearances, but it's like night and day in comparison. From here out, Howl's will simply be the only one I reread!
So far I have The Huntsman up on my blog, and will have Gatekeeper later this week, I've had to delay its posting until Sunday thanks to some unexpected changes to the schedule. The Secret Library was actually written first before I decided to interconnect all my stories this month, so I have to do a little tweaking but otherwise I'm so happy with my efforts thus far.
Thank you so much for your kind words again. I'm often so self-absorbed and thinking I can't do anything right or that I want to so it's nice to have reminders that I can and there are people who support what I do. I'm so grateful to you, and to everyone who still reads my stories.

HIGHKEY ALL I WANNA DO IS SMASH MY KEYBOARD AND SCREAM SO THAT U CAN MF HEAR ME FROM ACROSS THE WORLD BUT I JUST NEED A MOMENT TO BREATHE ???????? ugh SEI i fucking loved recall so so so so so much šŸ˜ the way it had everything needed in an smau??? like where do i even start wtf... ok lets like talk ab the characters bc that's such a strength of urs??? honestly for me, i dont mind reading a fic whose plot is comparatively tame so long as i enjoy the characters?? w recall i literally got the best of both worlds... insane plot aside, i fucking LOVED all the characters sm šŸ˜ u really created so many standout characters?? like,,, YN?? WONYOUNG?? YUNA??? YURI??? MOST IMPORTANTLY... JUNGWON?? FUCKKKKK he was literally my fav... i have such a soft sucker spot for "broken" characters and won mf ANNIHILATED my heart šŸ˜šŸ˜ being able to follow the entire trajectory of his character development was so insanely satisfying??? like i loved the way u introduced him as this super stoic, aloof, standoffish, lowkey mf aggro ass dude ??? it was super perplexing and intriguing at first, given the fact that he was literally the goody two shoes student president??? like naur THE GOOD TURNED BAD BOY TROPE IS FUCKING SUPERIOR IDGAFFFF UGHH the execution of the trope was so fucking GOOD THO. SEI THE FIRST FEW CHAPTERS OF RECALL WERE LITERALLY INSANELY GOOD. i loved loved loved the way you sustained plot suspense the entire time and always kept us readers on the edge of our seats??? like i was honestly ALWAYS questioning what would happen next - jungwon was such a fucking mystery and super unpredictable WHICH MADE READING THE SMAU SO SO SO FUCKIGN FUN?? also the way you were conscientious enough to incorporate various red herrings or "fake villains" like yuri and jeongwoo was so so so GOOD too?? BC YANNO AT THE END OF THE DAY THE ACCIDENT WAS LOWKEY JUST JW'S FAULT. BUT ANYWAY THE REST OF THE STORY DID NOT DISAPPOINT AT ALL,, LIKE FUCKKKK just thinking about the whole smau across 40 chapters and how everything unravelled is insane ?? GIRLL you did such a good job w ur story pacing by including just enough every single chapter so that you could answer a few questions and also create a thousand more šŸ˜ literally ADDICTIVE. it honestly made the whole experience of reading SAUR GOOD
i actually really really really the way you unfolded won's character too?? like i could NOT figure him out the entire time. he was so hot and cold with yn and while it was CONFUSING, i feel like it was all part of the fun trying to figure him out? the same w all the other characters like rei and yuri -- you never make anything definitive and i love that sm about ur characters,, I ALWAYS ALWAYS doubt my first judgements/impressions of some of them bc i know ure very detailed and thoughtful and are batshit crazy enough to make them flip entirely??

Right, the letter. How could Yn forget? Jungwon had made such a big fuss about opening it on graduation.
But somehowā€¦
Somehow it felt wrong ā€” opening it without him.
But still, with tears welling up in her eyes, Yn slowly unsealed the navy blue letter, pulling out the neatly folded paper that was sealed with a cherry blossom sticker.

Zulā€™s Top 9 Games of 2018
Tumblr media
By Zul Edwards
Heyyy itā€™s me. Iā€™m back! What a year! 2018 has come and gone and many awesome games have been played by everyone here at PAR. The votes were tallied, the results are in, and I am included in that bunch. However, some of the games I played and loved this year were no-shows on our list. Some AMAZING games that I think deserve a little love on our corner on the internet. Ā So, I thought, if you out there reading this were interested, (spoiler alert, nobody is) here is my OWN personal top nine games of 2018.
So, letā€™s get this thing started with my number 9!... oh yeah, I only played 9 games in 2018. heh.
9) No Manā€™s Sky ā€“ So I was one of those gamers who was excited for NMS when it was first announced a few years back. Thought the idea of exploring a quintillion planet was awesome. Then the game came out, I heard it sucked, and I ignored it. Enter a couple years later when it was on sale, had a ton of updates and new features: true online with friends, customizable characters, base building, and a brand-new story. However, it wasnā€™t enough to keep me hooked. Donā€™t get me wrong, I liked exploring the various galaxies and doing various side quests, engaging in dogfights with pirates and mining for space gold, but overall it just still felt so empty, so repetitious, and soā€¦ blah. I guess I still prefer quality over quantity, even if the quantity is in the quintillions. Ā
8) The Alliance Alive ā€“ The first on the list of ā€œGames only Zul played this yearā€. The Alliance Alive is a 3DS game from the creators of the classic ā€œLegend of Legacyā€, literally a game I borrowed from Justin, played for all of 30 minutes, then promptly returned to Justin never to be spoken of again. So, to my surprise when he told me the same studio was making another game, The Alliance Alive, but it was helmed by one of the writers of the Suikoden franchise, I was cautiously optimistic. Much to my (pleasant) surprise, the game was good! A blend of classic JRPG turned based battles with flairs of modernization: skills learned through fighting, increased stats based on the location of fighters in battles, and a darker story not usually found in those classic SNES/PS1 RPGs this seems to emulate. Ā While the main characters fall into some pretty clichĆ© tropes, the side characters really shine. From giant axe-wielding lizard men that remind me of my own D&D character, to a demon-dog-man butler, to a mad child genius scientist who rides a duck robot, this game has a lot of flavor.Ā I really should go back and finish.
7) Chasm ā€“ While itā€™s no secret that I love Castlevania games, I think itā€™s fair to say Iā€™m not really a giant fan of Metroidvania games. I prefer the simpler side-scrolling action of Castlevania, constantly moving forward towards a goal of smacking Drac in the face with a metal whip, to the backtracking and map completing chore of most Metroidvania games. With that said, something about the less intense and simpler format of Chasm kept me hooked till the end. I didnā€™t mind backtracking and completing the map in Chasm because it wasnā€™t as vast or complicated as other games in the genre. It was colorful, had great music, stellar pixel art and a fun yet challenging battle system and platforming. Overall it was a blast to play, but it just got overshadowed in a year filled with superior games.
6) God of War ā€“ ā€œWHAT THE FUCK?ā€ I hear you slam on your keyboards as I place the unrivaled GOTY in a paltry 6th place. Donā€™t get me wrong, this game is good. In fact, itā€™s VERY good. However, for whatever reason, I guess this game didnā€™t hook me like it did for everyone else. I only have a passing familiarity with the GoW series. Even though Iā€™m a diehard SonyBoy, I only ever played GoW 1 and never beat it. Kratos and Atreus are some of the best written and best-acted characters to come out of a video game in this year or any year. Hell, if we had a ā€œbest new characterā€ category again this year, I would struggle to not put Atreus in the top 3. The music is amazing, the writing is fantastic, the scope, cinematography and the constant one camera perspective were all stellar achievements in the medium of gaming, not to mention Iā€™m pretty much obsessed with all things Norseā€¦ BUT. I dunno. Little things kept taking me out of it. Atreusā€™s sudden, jarring mood swings. The poor pacing in certain parts. The sudden introduction of major characters and/or story elements, that felt kind of brushed over and/or rushed. The lackluster side content, the padding and the empty worlds. The game is good. But it never felt great to me. Most games that I love, I think about when Iā€™m not playing them, then I rush home from work to play them because I want to complete them, either for the story or because the gameplay is addicting, but this game felt more like a chore sometimes. I didnā€™t even buy it, I just borrowed it from Butch earlier in the year when it came out. Iā€™m sorry Cory. I tried but I just didnā€™t love this game.
5) Moonlighter ā€“ Now hereā€™s a game I absolutely adored. Flew under my radar and was recommended by Nick. By day youā€™re a humble shopkeeper, selling various wares and curios. By night, (byā€¦ MOONLIGHT) you explore dungeons ala Link to the Past style in a top-down view, into randomly generated maps. Each area has different items to collect & new materials to find, which you bring back to the shop to sell, which with the money you earn, can craft new weapons, which will get you further into dungeons, which will mean you find more items to sell which means you make more gold to spend on armor and weapons, which means you can get better materials to keep delving deeper, WHICH MEANSā€¦ ahem. Ah yes. That classic feedback loop. It sucked me in. Itā€™s simple but effective in keeping me engaged. Coupled with a great art style, fluid beautiful pixel graphics and a surprisingly good amount of story for this type of game, Moonlighter took a nice chunk of my time early in the year.
4) Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom ā€“ Another entry in ā€œGames only Zul played this yearā€, NNK2 was a surprise hit for me. I never played NNK1 and heard rather negative things about it from Nick over the years. I bought NNK2 on a whim months after it came out because it was on sale and I was craving a good JRPG, and it did not disappoint. I loved pretty much everything about this game. The music, the story, the beautiful not quite Ghibli, but practically Ghibli art style, the characters, the mechanics, the town building, the combatā€¦ it was everything I was looking for. There were certainly parts in the middle that lagged a bit, and the general ā€œgo to town > solve townā€™s problem > make an alliance with the townā€ could be considered clichĆ© or predictable, but every town felt unique and its inhabitants all felt genuine. Recruiting citizens into your kingdom and assigning them all a role in your castle was a time sink I didnā€™t realize I would be so into, but I think I spent more hours on that than anything else in the game. And it also gets marks for being the other child in a video game besides Atreus, King Evan, that I didnā€™t want to strangle, and in fact by the time the credits rolled, heā€™d probably be #2 or 3 in Best Character of the Year for me.
3) Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age ā€“ Now as far as JRPGS go, Dragon Quest is the ultimate grand-daddy, even more so than Final Fantasy, but it was a series I never really got into. I played some previous games in the series and found passing enjoyment in a couple titles but never enough to ever want to complete a game or seek out other entries in the series. That all kind of changed when I played DQ 11. DQ has never really strayed too far from its classic turn-based JRPG roots. ā€œIf it ainā€™t broke, donā€™t fix itā€ would be their mantra I assume, and I love it. In a time when the turn-based system is all but gone from genre giant Final Fantasy, DQ has instead chosen to stick with it, and fully master the dying style. It was hands down the best JRPG Iā€™ve played all year, and probably one of the best Iā€™ve played in several years. It has everything: a great story, compelling characters, awesome music, amazing art style, engaging combat, fun side quests, a challenging yet fair difficulty curve, and itā€™s actually, really funny on top of all that. While the length might scare people away, (I clocked in right around 120 hours after getting the platinum trophy for 100% completion of the game) itā€™s some of the best time I spent gaming in a long time. Itā€™s a classic in a modern era. Itā€™s weird, if you said to teenage Zul ā€œone of your favorite JRPGs ever will be Dragon Quest 11, and one of your least favorite JRPGs will be Final Fantasy 15ā€, he would never have believed youā€¦ but here we are.
2) Monster Hunter World ā€“ Ah yes. The one oddball in my gaming repertoire. I think we all have one of these, right? That one game/series that for whatever reason, sits outside your normal gaming habits, yet you love it, nonetheless. Maybe you love Halo and FPS games, but you also really like Animal Crossing for some reason. Or maybe youā€™re a diehard Dark Souls series fan but just canā€™t get enough of Cooking Mama as well. Variety is the spice of life they say, and while Iā€™m primarily a ā€œcharacter & story first, RPGs, video games are artā€ kind of dude, something about smashing Monsters in the face with a giant hammer has kept me hooked on the Monster Hunter series for nearly 10 years. I love the challenging but fair battles, the deep customization, the various weapons and armors for both male and female hunters, the varied and unique monsters that all have their own ecology, musical themes, and battle styles you must learn and adapt to if you want to survive. Itā€™s also linking up with friends (or even strangers online) and tackling a beast as a team. For all these reasons and so much more, this series sunk its claws in me from the very first time I played it, and it hasnā€™t let go. Monster Hunter World is the next-gen, beautifully realized game Iā€™ve wanted for years; and it took the story, art, gameplay, and fun Iā€™ve come to expect from this series to another level.
1) Red Dead Redemption II ā€“ I honestly donā€™t know how to write about this game. I can say all the other things Iā€™ve said up until now about how great the music is (itā€™s amazing), how varied and alive the characters feel (theyā€™re amazing), how stunningly awe-inspiring the scenery is or how fluid and lifelike the character animations are (theyā€™re amazing), how the story and personal journey of Arthur Morgan literally brought me to tears more than once (heā€™s #1 in Best Characters btw. And theyā€™re amazing), how rich every side quest is, how fun the mini-games are, how great the dialogue is, or any of the other truly breath-taking aspects of the game, but I donā€™t think I could do them justice. Hell, I donā€™t even know how to put them into words myself inside my own head. To me, this is one of those games that surpasses all of that. Yea, it has flaws, every game does, everyTHING does, but to me, itā€™s perfect, warts and all. Ā I canā€™t give it much higher praise than that, and it is absolutely the best game I played in years. When a game can give me an extensional crisis during some of its final moments, I think itā€™s safe to say that Itā€™ll stick with me and has undoubtedly set a very high bar for all future games. The team at Rockstar outdid themselves and have my thanks for bringing this game into the world.
PHEW. Well, thatā€™s it. Top 9 games of 2018 according to Zully Boy. Another great year in gaming for me personally and hereā€™s to another great year in 2019! Lots to look forward to, and hopefully some hidden gems thatā€™ll surprise me along the way. Happy Gaming everyone!
