i’m not very attached to the movies, i don’t think (tho we owned all the DVDs and watched it regular times and it is absolutely hysterical in hindi) but it is great entertainment! i find it helps to think of it as a slightly different universe than the books but also, very much agree on the snape thing. alan rickman turned him into an incredibly sympathetic anti-hero and u don’t rly see the pettiness and loseriness of book snape in action.

So... I'm a sucker for polyam ships & here's why:

(I'm mostly referring to the Harry Potter Fandom but tbh for me it applies to every fandom I like)

Some characters simply have lots of chemistry with more than one person. Relationships are complex and, much like friendships, romantic and/or sexual connections are often not limited to one person only. And yes, platonic and queerplatonic relationships are valid and very important (and in much need of representation) but polyamory also exists and one doesn't invalidate the other! (nor does it invalidate monogamy altogether) Ex: I think we can all agree that Remus Lupin is the purest creature to ever grace the fandom, right? Doesn't our beloved Moony deserve all the love in the world? All the lovers that he wants? I'm a hardcore Wolfstar stan but guess what? I also love Remadora with all my heart! I think it's not so crazy to think he would/could be polyamorous... (nevermind the fact that I could actually ship him with anyone and it would work for me)

I'm a firm believer that almost every single love triangle (or any shape you like) can easily be resolved with polyamory. Besides, the "you must choose"/"it's them or me" trope is borderline toxic monogamy! In most cases, there is no reason for these love triangles to exist other than create a shitty "conflict" that doesn't even need to exist. Ex: You ship Harry with Ginny but also with Draco? Well, I'm your polyam aunty and I say LET HIM HAVE THEM BOTH! Ginny and Draco as metamours would be soooo much fun to see! Does Hermione really need to choose between Ron and Viktor? Maybe not! Can we explore that, please? Most importantly, can we allow it? I think we can.

Polyam relationships, polycules and metamours make the most interesting dynamics! (ok this is a bit silly but still) With polyamory, there is no one template in terms of amount/type of connections, relationship goals or expectations. This opens up the door for such complex and interesting dynamics and stories that enrich the characters on a different level, in my opinion. Ex: The Marauders are great candidates for this kind of exploration (but not the only ones). The context is just right (in the middle of a war in the 70s). There are a million ways in which that could work, let's see: - Lily and James, and Sirius and Remus as core relationships, Sirius and James of course and Lily and Remus. While James and Remus remain metamours, as do Lily and Sirius. - Lily and James, and then Sirius and Remus and James as a triad, and Lily and Sirius date outside as well. - Lily and James, and Sirius and Remus as core and open relationships. Lily and Remus in the sweetest platonic relationship, and James and Sirius as lovers. And I could go on all day but you get the point(?) Imagine ALL OF THEM RAISING HARRY! So much potential!

This is perhaps my very complicated way of saying I NEED MORE POLYAMOROUS REPRESENTATION IN THIS FANDOM! More fanfics, more fanart, more more more!

an introductory rec list (that nobody asked for) for some of my favorite (platonic and/or romantic) pairings: severitus [2/10]

First fic I read for the pairing: Of Potions and Phobias by tt22123 [1k,G] Severitus story with nightmares [i stumbled on this fic on accident and it was short and sweet (and a little bittersweet at the end).]

Fic that really sold me on the pairing: Leo Inter Serpentes (Series) by Aeternum [746k,E,6 works] (WIP) Just one conversation between two eleven year old boys goes slightly differently, and the world changes. Just how much will be different with Harry being sorted into Slytherin, and how much will stay the same? [i will never not recommend this series: it’s amazing, it’s well-written, it’s true to all the characters and relationships and it feels more canon than canon (of course, it’s also significantly more gay than canon but i said what i said).]

Absolute favorite fic(s) for the pairing: Nobody Cared by etherian [360k,G] Harry is 11 years old and looking forward to attending Hogwarts. Why, then, does he miss the Welcoming Feast? (warnings for: child abuse, bullying, depictions of violence) [this fic is really well done (but has a lot of angst and definitely mind the warnings above (although the author doesn’t include warnings on the fic)).] Family Means More Than Blood by WingsOfADream [422k,M] A prophecy made in 1975 drastically changes the life of the boy who should have been known as Harry Potter. [this is yet another fic with a really well-written and fascinating plot with excellent characterizations and plot lines. i definitely would recommend it to someone with a lot of time on their hands.]

Most recent fic I’ve read for the pairing: Blackberry Tart by starknjarvis [33k,G] One year after Severus Snape offered to become Harry's legal guardian, Sirius Black shows up at Hogwarts. [the fic is a part of a well-written and pragmatic series and this fic also includes the development of a remus & severus and a sirius & severus friendship so that harry can have a larger and supportive family and i’m living for it (i believe the exact tag that the author used was “coparenting with your childhood nemesis” and i am living for it).]

Favorite AU(s) I’ve read for the pairing: Alternate Sorting AU (Slytherin!Harry): Malfoy Flavor by Vorabiza [199k,E] Harry’s ready to banish the Golden Boy image and take charge of his life. Unfortunately for him, or fortunately, there are surprises in store for him. [Slytherin!Harry but it’s not an entire canon rewrite like most of the alternate sorting fics i love so much, so that’s fun. also drarry and just the right amount of painful but realistic angst. oh and it has a delightfully fluffy little sequel.]

Favorite Series for the pairing: Forgiveness & Redemption by waitingondaisies [130k,T,2 works] Severus Snape was discovered as a spy mere days before the start of the school year. Thankfully, Albus had been working on a vague contingency plan for this possibility. It had been inspired by the question, “What would it take for Severus Snape to see that he was wrong about Harry Potter?” The answer? Force Severus to go undercover as Alfonse “Eli” Hopkirk, a sixth year Gryffindor. (that’s technically the summary for the first fic but i think it serves well enough in lieu of a series summary, which the author did not provide. also warnings for child abuse.) [this series is such an interesting concept and it feels very realistic in how it played out and i’m honestly here for it.] You're a Parent, Severus by acmparker [210k,G,6 works] (WIP) When Lily got home from her first year at Hogwarts, she found a new distance between herself and Petunia. As a result Severus and Lily became even closer to each other over that summer. The next year Lily found a book in the Hogwarts Library that describe an ancient ritual for creating a blood bond that would make two unrelated people kin. She convinces Severus to undergo the ritual with her and they become brother and sister. This means that when Lily dies there is another whose blood relationship with her is recognized by the blood ward Dumbledore places on Harry. To Severus Snape's chagrin he finds himself the last line of defense between Harry and the forces of the Dark Lord. (again, no series summary but i think this works well enough.) [i love a good remus and severus friendship plus severitus so this series really works for me. and it’s a canon rewrite (love those).] Bruised Words by starknjarvis [49k,G,2 works] (WIP) After Harry blows up Aunt Marge, Dumbledore decides it's not safe for Harry to spend the rest of the summer at the Leaky Cauldron, and instead sends him to stay at Spinner’s End with Professor Snape. It's tense, awkward, and teeming with misunderstandings...but it might be the best thing that's happened to either of them. They're both been without a family for a very long time. (apparently all my favorite series aside from Leo Inter Serpentes, which i’ve already listed above, don’t have series descriptions, but the first work’s description seems to work well enough. also warnings for child abuse.) [this is the series that blackberry tart belongs to and may i just say: it’s excellent and well-written and pragmatic and i would recommend it.]

Longest fic I’ve read for the pairing: A Year Like None Other by aspeninthesunlight [789k,T] A letter from home? A letter from family? Well, Harry Potter knows he has neither, but all the same, it starts with a letter from Surrey. Whatever the Durleys have to say, it can't be anything good, so Harry's determined to ignore it. But then, his evil schoolmate rival spots the letter and his slimy excuse for a teacher intercepts it and forces him to read it. And that sends Harry down a path he'd never have walked on his own. It will be a year of big changes, a year of great pain, and a year of confronting worst fears. It will be a year of surprising discoveries, of finding true strength, of finding out that first impressions of a person's true colours do not always ring true. It will be a year of paradigm shifts. And from the most unexpected sources, Harry will have a chance to have that which he has never known: a home ... and a family. A sixth year fic, this story follows Order of the Phoenix and disregards any canon events that occur after Book 5. (warnings for: graphic depictions of violence, self-harm, severe medical trauma) [the fic has some really dark parts but the plot is so intricate and fascinating and the relationships and dynamics are excellently written and the characterizations are spot on and i would definitely recommend it to anyone with a lot of time on their hands.]

Fic(s) with some of my favorite tropes: Sickfic + Hurt/Comfort: When He Called Me Dad by MarauderChaos [31k,Not Rated] It was only however as the end of his second year did Severus collect enough evidence and enough of his own courage to step in. The boy looked as though the world was ending when Severus brought him to his private quarters to see Madam Bones, and for a moment Severus felt the world was ending when someone recommended him as guardian. But that was how it ended, with Harry Potter becoming the ward of the Potions Master. It was kept a secret from the press and the students of Hogwarts – even his own Godson didn’t know, mainly because Lucius was bound to hear of it if he did and Severus didn’t want to risk their lives. They had their ups and downs, screaming and shouting, hexes and slamming doors, crying and hugging, laughing and actually having fun. But there was one moment that Severus would always remember, with its own fair share of good and bad, was the time he called him Dad. [i’m a sucker for hurt/comfort and accidental revelation of feelings, which in this case is the strength of harry’s platonic feelings, and this fic has all that so… yeehaw.] Accidental Bonding (but make it platonic): Love is... (series) by atiaahmed [133k,G,4 works] (WIP) This series revolves around how Snape starts to care about Harry because of a charm put on him by Ron and Hermione. The first story "Love is a charm" explores how their relationship changes because of the charm and what happens when it expires at the end of the year The second story explores how their relationship develops after the events of "Love is a charm". In "Love is a haven" other paternal figures, namely Lupin and Black will threaten Severus position with Harry. [i kind of like the platonic severitus take on one of my favorite hp tropes tbh and i like the way that their relationship develops and the realistic trust issues and such.]

002 | Send me a ship and I will tell you: Ron and Harry!!

When I started shipping them: Since the beginning of time. I actually don’t remember. I think it’s always been there just because I’m always a sucker for best friends to lovers. But they became my OTP like a year or two ago.

My thoughts: I love them so much?? I genuinely don’t know why more people don’t ship it. Even if it’s not their OTP or their preferred pairing for each other. But they’re just so cute and non-toxic and obvious? Like, how is this not like Deamus in that everyone ships it at least a little? Or even if people see it more of a friendship and don’t want to mess it up with romance. I get it. Sometimes I feel that way too (less often, now). Like, that’s why I have a friendship story for them devoid of romance. But why isn’t there more friendship fics? I love all of their interactions. Platonic or otherwise. Honestly? I kind of want someone to write them as rivals to friends. (If anyone knows a story like this, send it my way).

What makes me happy about them:Their obvious love for each other and unwavering support. The fact that Ron is always ready to defend him and protect him  when no one else does. The fact that even though Harry doesn’t always show it (and he should show it more), he still silently supports Ron and looks out for him. Like with having the twins buy robes for him. Like when he was trying to get a glance at his try-outs when he was in detention or when he kept getting distracted by him during his first game (coughhesinlovecough).Or how he was glad for Angelina’s faith in him and how he tried to ease his nerves by holding keeper tryouts last.

What makes me sad about them: I’m going to go with @hillyminne here and say that the relationship can be unbalanced. If they got together, Harry would have to make more of an effort to get him to open up, instead of just kind of assuming that he’ll be fine or be too uncomfortable to talk about it. Because we all know Ron would be right there through all the nightmares and moodiness and making tea in the mornings because he already does that. So Harry would need to step. it. up. It just makes me sad because I feel that in any relationship, Ron is obviously going to know that the person loves him, but probably feel that he loves the other person more or that if he doesn’t do enough the other person will leave and just. Ronnie breaks my heart.

Things done in fanfic that annoys me: Making them too cinammon rolly or too emotional. For the first one, I’ve talked about it, but don’t forget they’re sassy little shits.Don’t take that away from them. For the second, y’all know that I like them talking stuff out. You’ve read my fics. But they’re also awkward about emotions. Like, I have to go back and be like “okay, but would they say that? is it too emotional?” because again, they’re little shits and they need to work towards being more vulnerable. Also, Harry crying at the drop of a hat. Like, unless there’s something really emotional going on or he’s overwhelmed and stuff, Harry doesn’t cry. Like, I can count on one hand the number of times Harry has cried in canon. Like, I’ve made him cry in my fics, but like. Not just for anything. That was a huge rant, just to say: OOC. Like, obviously you have to shift stuff for it to make sense, but I want to recognize them as my two idiots in love.

Things I look for in fanfic: I’m a sucker for Ron pining after oblivious idiots fics. 

My wishlist: MORE CONTENT. But also, protective Harry fics. Please send them my way.

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: Hermione and Ginny

My happily ever after for them: “Two brooos, chilling in a hot tuuub” very, very close together because they’re in love. Just them, being them, getting into trouble and having fun and going to the movies and quidditch games and getting caught making out in closets. Living in sin for years and bliss until one of them is like, “maybe we should get married?” also, kids, but I haven’t formed enough headcanons about that

harry potter + gayness ratings

so I've been doing a hp reread the last week or so. I'm on the goblet of fire and I figured it was time to look at all the hidden subtextual (and therefore the last thing from intentional from she who must not be named) homoeroticism in the books I've read so far:

harry potter and the philosopher's stone - 2/10, pretty much zilch as harry was still smol and therefore didn’t really understand his feelings at all (not that he got much better at that later on lol), but I'll give a couple points for harry and ron because their friendship at least started here

harry potter and the chamber of secrets - 3/10, nothing really springs to mind except ron being fiercely protective of his bff MY DUDES I HAVE FAILED MY OWN FANDOM how could I forget the whole “scared, potter?” “you wish” moment??? or just generally how harry and draco are archenemies aged just 12 years old?? for realsies tho that moment in the books and the films was one of the few things that I think was done justice. 5/10

harry potter and the prisoner of azkaban - 7/10, now we're talking. this was the one that made me glad I was doing a reread (the first two, while enjoyable, felt a bit predictable, possibly because I have watched those movies so many times), and the moments with remus and sirius being unflinchingly loyal to their bf james and rightly berating peter for not dying for him the way both of them would have - showstopping. I'm just sad they only hugged when they reunited but hey this is you-know-who after all - and no, I don’t mean voldy-shorts. and I felt like drowning in my own tears at “not at all, padfoot, old friend” and good god now I want to either read or write marauder fic. I will have to dig up some of my old faves at some point soon. 

also!!! ron with his whole “if you’re going to kill harry you’ll have to kill us too” - this is the kind of RIDE OR DIE person I need in my life one day - girls only tho lol.

harry potter and the goblet of fire - 12/10, omg. omg omg omg. I haven’t even finished it yet but here’s a quick list of what I have so far:

harry meeting bill and immediately realising he’s got a crush on him (”bill was - there was no other word for it - cool”). 

also I always felt like bill radiated bi energy with that long hair and earring combo amirite

fred and george legit say to harry that they’re sure percy is gonna pop the question soon to barty crouch, which aside from being rather funny also reminds me of the fact that there are a fair few jokes of this vein that I might have missed in past books - tho I still find it hilarious that crouch calls percy weatherby, lolol

so! many! mentions! of cedric diggory being handsome! like harry my boy I know how you feel. I used to wonder what that feeling was when I looked at a girl and was sure I was just jealous of how pretty she was and actually it turned out I just wanted to kiss her. harry should have kissed cedric on the mouth 2k19

god also harry gets so nervous around cho, bless my lil bisexual disaster

when harry is doing the second task, the thing that he would have missed the most was “his wheezy” and honestly SAME. like, aside from fleur who got her sister, the boys all got the people they loved to save

(side note, I love love love all the krumione in this. not gay directly but I’m getting there)

I know it wasn’t in the books but when the weasley twins are teasing ron about how much he admires krum it reminded me of how in the movies they were like “viktor, I love you, viktor, I do, when we’re apart my heart beats only for youuuu” and also!!! ronnie literally has a figurine of viktor in the dormitory. freddie wasn’t wrong when he said ron was in love :D 

on that note, omg, I am something of a sucker for love triangles and I have to admit I loved the whole thing with ron, hermione and krum, and then harry, cho and cedric, esp because??? they all liked each other??? and they could have all been happy together if they wanted to. in particular, ron clearly fancied the pants of viktor, and there is no platonic way of harry thinking of him as handsome that many times, lbr.

the yule ball. good god. it could have been so, so, so easily solved if they just went with their best friends. I remember seeing a post about how ron should have danced with harry to open the yule ball with a rose between his teeth and honestly SAME. 

not to mention??? parvati and lavender were clearly girlfriends and dean and seamus were boyfriends, so they also should have gone together instead of forcing this thing with parvati and harry (krum and hermione meanwhile were a match made in heaven imo and I loved them and always will)

asexuals, platonic relationships, shipping & the media

Something that really frustrates me (esp as an aro/ace) is seeing non-canon (but totally are canon shh) ships. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a sucker for a good ship (especially a slow burn with a great storyline) but a lot of the time I see things like “they can’t just be friends”, “look at the way he looks at her”, “there’s obviously something more than just friendship”.

Romantic relationships are not worth more or less than platonic ones. Someone could bond and really connect with someone and truly love them, but their relationship is purely platonic. It hurts seeing so many things saying “more than” or “just friends”. No type of relationship is worth more or less than another, purely based on the type of relationship it is.

Males and females can be friends. They can be best friends. They can be soul mates. They can be life partners. They can be all of these things while still having a healthy platonic relationship. It's normal. And I think that always having male/female relationships in shows/books/movies/etc always end up to be “more than friends” just adds to this whole assumption that romantic > platonic and male/female friendship = “something more”.

These ideas are actually harmful and confusing to aspec/arospec people. We already have to grow up thinking that we’re broken or immature or just waiting for “the one” and this is adding unnecessary pressure to get that “ideal life”.

I (a female) asked my parents a few weeks ago if I could meet up with my (male) friend. They completely freaked out because they assumed we were dating or at least one of us likes the other (which is funny because neither of us is into the opposite gender in “that way”). My parents don’t allow my male friends to sleep over and this year will be the first year I’ve even been allowed to invite guys (who aren’t family members) to my birthday party (I’ll be 16).

It’s so normalised that male/female friendships automatically mean “something more”. From a young age, my family always refer to the young boys in our family as a “ladies man”.  We are told that boys/girls have cooties and to stay away. We are told that boys pick on girls because they like us. We get a little disgusted by the opposite gender a lot of the time, but are then told (by the same people most of the time) we’ll “want a boy/girlfriend someday!”, one day “we’re going to want to kiss a boy/girl!”, if we’re seen with literally anyone from the opposite gender, we get the whole “oooohh are they your boy/girlfriend?”

Society is so stuck in its allonormative ways that everyone just assumes that two people who are of opposite the gender and are close are dating. Because that’s normal. Because “they got friend zoned”.

!! JUST LET PEOPLE BE FRIENDS WITH PEOPLE WITHOUT IT BEING A BIG DEAL !!

and so many more

I am in no way saying that shows/books/movies/etc can’t have male/female relationships (platonic or romantic or whatever) nor am I saying that shipping people is bad (I, myself, am a big shipper) It’s just painful sometimes when you ship two people and the entire fandom are saying “they have something more than friendship”. But what’s more than friendship? Best friendship?? It’s totally okay to ship people. But I’m just so tired of the lack of stronger-than-everything platonic ships (especially the male/female ones)
