Can i talk abt how much I despise how the genloss fandom portrays/mischaraterizes the characters for a second.

The way they baby gl!ranboo annoys me, same goes for gl!charlie

And the way they ignore gl!sneeg unless its for a fic where they make him be this- "dad of the group,caring,doesnt want anyone to get hurt,doesnt have any other personality than that" kind of guy.

Then they Just ignore the other characters as if like there is no other characters in the show other than gl!ranboo and gl!charlie

Charlie was in love with you, drowning in your love, even. He found your pair of e/c eyes and found himself stumbling over his words the whole night at that bar. He couldn't stop looking at you, your smile, your dancing with your friends.

He sat with you in the back corner booth later that night, around midnight, while his friends and your friends were doing their thing. He started small talk that led into laughter, and once the night was over, he didn't want to leave.

"Why don't we do something crazy?" You suggest, merely buzzed unlike all your friends.

"Huh?" He asks, grabbing the last can of beer he was sipping from as he stands up.

"Why don't we talk later?"

He smiles, glancing away for a moment. "Yeah, sure"

You loved him more than anyone else in the world could've loved him, from the quiet times to the loud ones.

You'd watch the sunsets on the porch swing, the sound of the chain links only pulling you two closer. You had his heartstrings tangled, your eyes brought him to his knees, your smile felt like an Earthy Sunday morning in the middle of no where to him.

He loved you more than anything in this life, you were the only thing he needed.

He bragged about you a lot on stream and to his friends, and he understood that you were always too shy to come on camera. He didn't mind, though. You were always out of frame in the corner or in another room listening to him or watching his stream.

But today, something came over you.

You were tired of having your Instagram on private, with him never posting pictures with you in them. You decided to just join his stream and get it over with and meet his fanbase.

It was worth it for everyone at this point, you'd been dating for over a year now, it wasn't that you felt like you owed it to his fans, you wanted to do it for the good of everyone even if it didn't make sense. You wanted to show him off, and he wanted to do the same.

He sits down at his desk, setting up all the screens to how they normally did when he streamed. You sit beside him in a spinny chair, spinning it around while he sets his things up.

He gives you a little smile as you slow the chair down, feeling dizzy. He starts the stream and welcomes his incoming audience with the Stream Starting Soon screen. He looks to you again, making sure you still look up for it.

You give him a happy nod, and after about five minutes, he fades the screen out to the webcam, showing you two sitting together.

You shyly wave while Charlie says hello and introduces you.

"This is Y/n, my partner" He smiles, looking at you to say anything.

"Hi, I'm Y/n." You shyly smile, "We met at a bar"

"Ranboo, my main man," Charlie smiles, "Set me up with them"

The chat explodes with positive comments. Most are complimenting you, others congratulating both of you. It brings a smile to your face, seeing all this support and all these compliments, it was the most you'd seen in your life.

"See? They love you" He chuckles, resting a hand on your shoulder. "This is gonna be a QnA stream, I guess," He looks to you for a moment, like he was looking for approval. "So send us questions!"

You nod, giving a thumbs up, a little nervous. Of course, the nervousness began post-introducing yourself.

"How'd we meet?" Charlie reads, "At a bar. It was me, Ranboo and Sneeg, and I saw them across the bar, fell in love at first sight"

You smile, "Later in the night he joined me in a corner booth and we talked for like, an hour, cause we were both tired but didn't want to leave our friends with no ride home"

"Oh, I would've left them, I stayed for you"

Cutscene Theory

During genloss we see several cutscenes. I don't think a single one should be trusted.

Heres why.

Cutscenes and prerecorded bits in genloss are used generously to give proper effect and punch to the story being told. many being used because it simply wouldn't be feasible to do live, or for comedic purposes.

Dimensional door scenes (forest, beach, hell, slime dimension, warehouse) Cooking challenge cutaways the ep 2 laser room and even the ep 3 button sequence these are all prerecorded. and not just for us, but in the context of the show as well. They don't pretend that scenes arnt prerecorded. in the laser sequence, vinny is thrown across a room, gets hit by an anvil, before ranboo and sneeg get beamed up out of the room. Further, multiple dimension doors are very clearly done on a greenscreen. Showfall prerecorded their scenes. the only people they need to fool are the cast members, and in that case it's brushed off as a "don't think about it too hard" situation. The real question is how this affects the story. and the answer is alot. Prerecorded scenes mean that while cast members are experiencing a silly video like its a wacky and current experience, their bodies are either just going through motions....or as it's highly implied, they get "Paused" during the duration of the scene. Due to sneegs escape attempt, we have proof that the characters can be paused. a stasis where they don't move, don't experience, and don't remember anything happening in front of them. I propose we try to peel behind the presented video and imagine whats behind the camera. I propose that during the laser scene and vinnys "death" ranboo was busy getting guided by an employee to the blacklight room which we know from the mall layout, was on the other side of the floor. I propose that when opening the dimensional door, ranboo kept getting paused before the door would actually open, which is why he still struggles with it when the camera lets him. a detail very intentionally cut from TFC. I propose That from the moment we see ranboo and charlie enter the room with hetch, they don't stand a chance. that there was no reprieve. no chance to think about the place they're in, no grand final determination and chase to freedom. instead, while we were watching the bow to a grand final show.. the real ranboo is being dragged down an escalator. carelessly. mask scraping against and cracking against the floor, being pulled down to the first floor of the mall to be strung into the place reserved for him. the heart of the facility. ready to face judgment. -Tophat

i keep seeing people say that gl!niki deserved better, and don't get me wrong, i think she does too, but you know who else deserved better?

gl!sneeg.

Reason 1: he was the only person on the carousel that actually got a glimpse into what was actually happening. when he got the first hat, you can just see the sheer terror in his face. he didn't even say anything, but you could tell exactly what was going on in his mind! (that's also extremely good acting on sneeg's part, kudos to him)

also, remember when the screen first went weird when gl!ranboo operated on gl!charlie? and how gl!charlie had an actual open wound and he was in actual pain?

gl!sneeg probably saw that as well. he saw what really happened in that room when everyone else was under god knows what kind of mind control. he didn't deserve to see all that, he didn't deserve to get put back into the carousel after he ran away.

So we can see in the above images the methods Showfall Media is using to control gl!Sneeg gl!Charlie and gl!Ranboo, they use an already pre-existing technology called an Electroencephalogram (EEG). Now this technology has been in use for decades, and essentially how it works is that it uses electrodes placed onto your scalp combined with a conductive gel to measure the electrical activity in your brain, these electrical signals are usually referred to as “brain waves” and these brainwaves can be subdivided into four categories, Gamma (greater than 30 Hz), Beta (13-30 Hz), Alpha (8-12 Hz), Theta (3.5-7.5 Hz), and Delta (0.1-3.5 Hz)

These different brainwaves are generally assosiated with different emotions, awareness levels, brain activities, etc. Now if Showfall Media has installed these onto sneeg, charlie, and ranboo, that means they have access to their thoughts and feelings, but brainscanning isn’t an absolute precise device, it still takes a lot of human effort and time to properly interpret the brainwaves. If Showfall somehow had a tool to easily interpret the signals they could much more easily operate, say, a live show. Lucky for them there is already a real life solution to this problem, kinda.

Its called Brain Generative Pre-Training Transformer, or BrainGPT for short.  What its goal is, is to act as an assist tool for human neurologists to use in real neuroscience cases and case studies, what it does is it uses a Large Language Model (LLM) full of pre-existing human research papers and other neuroscience knowledge too vast for human comprehension. And whenever a neurologist hands BrainGPT a prompt, (such as anomalous finding or to asses the fields understanding of a certain topic) , “would generate likely data patterns reflecting its current synthesis of the scientific literature”  (braingpt.org)

Now in regards to Generation Loss, what this means is that Showfall Media potentially has acces to this sort of technology, and would be able to use it in the production of their shows, now BrainGPT has a good way to go before its widely avalable. But in the genloss au, it can be far into development at this point, and be available for companies to use in whatever way they see fit.

Now reading and decoding brain signals is one thing, but to mind control someone is far beyond what is capable today, but Showfall Media has somehow developed technology to do so, the way I’m guessing they did it is that they produced certain brainwaves from the electrodes on the actors heads to give them the emotional reactions they needed for the show. I can’t exactly get into the technical stuff cause I’m not a neurologist, but its just a hunch on how I think they did it.

As for the mind controlling devices themselves, I feel there’s a more subtextual reason as to why those objects in particular are chosen as the devices that are central to the show’s operation. Ranboo’s mask has been a heavy emphasis throughout Gen 1 TSE,

Its been a central figure in not only generation loss’ marketing, but also ranboo’s marketing, because when you think of ranboo one of the first things that pops up is the mask, atleast in the wider public’s eye.

But these general associations not only exist with Ranboo, with Slimcicle you usually think of the wide brim glasses, with Sneeg its his backwards cap, and this is with the other cast members too when their introduced on the spinning carousel in episode 2. Furthermore, with Niki it’s that’s she's just so nice, with Austin its that he’s just a gay guy,  and with Vinny and Ethan these associations don’t really exist. So, with Vinny he's just the “hoarder”, and Ethan isn't even introduced. And then there's Jerma, who is relinquished to a goofy character with a weird voice and a strange sense of humour which sort of fits his public image.

But what I wanna mention with Ranboo’s mask specifically is that with the three images shown on the genloss twitter of the control devices, sneeg’s is just a hat, like theres nothing special about it, just a hat with electrodes on it, when you take it off he’s completely in control of himself. But, with charlie’s it’s a good bit harder to just take it off. His glasses are drilled into his skull connected to electrodes which are also implanted in his skull, with an additional feature of a speaker in his jaw. But if you remove the glasses, there would be a lot of bleeding and his vision would be impaired, but he would still be a free man.

But with Ranboo, poor, poor, Ranboo… Like Charlie, they have electrodes implanted on to their brain connected to a switch on the back of their skull (which also may or may not also be connected to their spine, idk its hard to tell). These sprout wires that thread through the mask and lead into their throat, and the mask piece itself is sewn shut onto their SKIN.

Now this makes me wonder, why is Ranboo so heavily guarded when the other are (relatively) easy to set free? Is it because Ranboo is an integral part of the show and therefore high risk? Is it because Showfall needed extra resources for the chat to be able to control them?... Or is it because Ranboo tried to escape so many times before that they were forced to disfigure them to such an extreme degree, and yet somehow, SOMEHOW, they are able to resist, whether it be tapping SOS on their hand when they're on full control mode or shanking a Showfall employee with a dagger, Ranboo, Resists. But Showfall will never let them leave. Or they will? Idk founders cut hasn’t come out yet as of writing this, anyway ramble over. You can leave now.

If we’re going off of the “All genloss deaths were real and shot through a silly filter”:

-CHARLIE: Survives DAY1. The death as the Slime Demon was staged and he was taken away offscreen through special effects. His real death however happens on DAY2 when Ranboo performs surgery on him in the Second Puzzle Room (Surgeon Simulator) this is also the first time we see the red camera (the set without the silly) for the first time. The ‘Charlie’ Ranboo was talking to in the second room was his dead body with the SFX put in. I also think his voice was pre-recorded (like the cutaways on DAY1) before that -which makes everything even more fucked up knowing he was recording lines to replace himself in case he died. This ALSO also implies that Snowfall made Charlie eat ?? A bunch of micro plastics back when he was made the protagonist which I think is very funny cuz why??? He got a whole mouse trap and hotwheels car in him dude 😭

-SNEEG: Survives DAY1. Like Charlie we see him get taken away offscreen for DAY2. We see that red camera again as he tries to get away during the second room through a bathroom break but Snowfall brainwashes him. The original plan was supposed to be one person would survive the second room but by what happened. A second person (Sneeg) would be picked to survive and essentially act as an enforcer to make sure the other actors stay in line. He ultimately dies keeping himself and Austin at the other side of the wall, crushing them to death in Seventh Puzzle Room (Hole in the Wall).

-NIKI: Is shot twice offscreen by Jerma in the Fourth Puzzle Room (Candy Crush) DAY2. Theorise the game masters (Charlie DAY1, Jerma DAY2) like Sneeg were there to supervise the actors. Theorise the first shot at Niki was a deliberate mercy shot to keep her quiet but alive. It’s implied through watching Sneeg get brainwashed that Jerma was terrified that the same would happen to him if he failed - the second shot was reluctant but fatal.

-VINNY: Burnt by lasers and blunt head trauma in the Fifth Puzzle Room (Oceans 11 Heist) DAY2. Kinda a weird one I think they actually did try to throw Vinny over the lasers but it both wasn’t far enough and too high. He’s burnt by lasers but we also see him hit his head on the ceiling which might have been the final blow rather than a comically small anvil.

-ETHAN: murdered offscreen in the Sixth Puzzle Room (Top Model) DAY2. Similar case to Niki he went backstage where he wasn’t supposed to go (the blacklight signs just extra warning to the actors NOT to use that way in)

-AUSTIN: Crushed to death by a wall in the Seventh Puzzle Room (Hole in the Wall) while being held back by Sneeg on DAY2.

-JERMA: Murdered offscreen in the final room (Mall of America entrance) DAY2. Snowfall found out about the recording Jerma was going to use to help Ranboo find the truth after witnessing the deaths and they killed him.

-FRANK (bonus): Unknown if he was an actual person or a prop (hard to tell atp). If he was he’d be long dead before DAY1. He could have been Sneeg’s friend, he could have been a staff member at Snowfall who rebelled and tried to escape. Those ‘slime’ parts on Charlie’s set on DAY1 might have even been Frank’s body parts.

FAQ

How will eligibility be determined?

It will be determined by the amount of fics the character is tagged in for the fandom in question. Then, the characters with the most fics for them (about top ten for larger fandoms, will change depending on the fandom/smp size) will be excluded

What about characters who are in a lot of fics but not the main character?

Sadly, they will still be excluded if they are in the top percent, as there is no way to consistently tell main characters without searching through fics, which would take too long.

What about non player characters, like NPCs?

They are considered characters for this! Some are even popular enough that they aren't eligible! So if you want to write about an NPC who is eligible, go for it!

Do fics need to be a certain length?

Nope! Can be a drabble, a one shot, a multi chapter, or a small poem! All it has to be is about one or more of the eligible characters.

Do fics have to be finished to add them to the collection?

They do not have to be! It can be a fic that you plan to work on even after the event ends, or just an idea you want to get out there

What is Generation Loss: Unperson?

Unperson is a Generation Loss AU written, illustrated, and narrated by yours truly!

The story begins as canon-adjacent to Generation 1 (the first chapter, Savior's Stigmata, is technically a prologue, in that it takes place during the events of episode three of The Social Experiments). In chapters 2 and onwards, the cast of TSE begin an adventure anew.

Showfall Media has revolutionized the field of interactive entertainment. In Hetch's Social Experiments, this entertainment took the form of three consecutive livestreams, which the audience could actively participate in and, ultimately, decide the fate of the Hero [i.e. Generation 1 of Generation Loss]. Now, Showfall Media is proud to bring you entertainment through an even more immersive medium: video games.

Anathema Annihilation is Showfall's most innovative use of "Phantoptics" technology to date: a video game where one's choices really matter and actively impact the world we live in.

Charlie awakens in a new environment and with a new purpose as the face of the beta tester's Hero avatar. Elsewhere, Ranboo has been revived, reprogrammed, and repurposed with a new face of his own: a biomechanical, bestial antagonist known as "The Devourer".

The player character - the Hero (who we know to be Charlie) - joins forces with a helpful non-player Companion (Sneeg) to eliminate a wide range of enemies - known as "Anathemas" - across multiple levels, each culminating with a fight against a powerful boss: an "Abomination".

Depending on the player's Variant choice, the theme (and therefore appearance and ability mechanics) of the Anathemas, as well as the Hero and Companion classses, changes.

Regardless of the player's Variant choice, however, the Abominations always remain the same: previous cast members who have been previously rejected by an audience and have been revived and repurposed as biomechanical monstrosities.

As the Hero and Companion progress through the levels of Anathema Annihilation, their minds become increasingly plagued by questions concerning their memories, free will, and grasp of reality. But they are not the only ones cursed with introspection; the Devouerer, too, clings desperately on to whatever shreds of humanity it still possesses, and seeks, above all else, to avenge its friends.

I DONT HAVE MUCH MORE TO SAY ABOUT THE LATEST SHOW BUT HERES A QUICK SUMMARY OF MY THOUGHTS

1. the whole censorship thing is so good i love it. i love how it recontextualises the last episode too. how much horror have we really been watching and laughed off? was The Spirit covered in blood not slime? was the slagghetti actually just guts or something?

2. kinda bouncing off the last one but I am definitely redrawing the surgery scene. ran I love you but my nitpicky anatomy brain wants to make alterations

3. sneeg becoming lucid and just constantly staring at charlie was a lot of fun because he’s probably seeing someone who is literally bleeding out. like there is no hope for charlie. even if they sewed him back up he would have the worst fucking infection. I like the idea that its not just us and ranboo seeing everything through a filter, it’s EVERYONE

4. I’ve seen a couple people say Niki could see everything the whole time which I LOVE. she was the only one who seemed genuinely upset on the carousel and fully aware of showfall’s cruelty.

5. I NEED TO GO BACK BECAUSE APPARENTLY RANBOO IS TAPPING OUT MORSE CODE IN A FEW SECTIONS WITH ONE HAND AND THEIR OTHER HAND MAKES THEM STOP???? GOOD SHIT RIGHT THERE

6. Ranboo finally swearing at the end suggesting that not only was he blind to everything truly happening in that moment, they were also being censored. similar thing with stopping themselves from tapping morse code.

7. I’m not ever getting over ranboo finally seeing the cameras and looking DIRECTLY AT US god that was fucking good. Eye contact is so powerful in art and having the first proper eye contact with them at that point is *fucking explodes*.
