“Goodwin suggests that queer space can exist within a physical and conceptual space, as queerness is not a definite, fixed existence. In relation to Goodwin's theories, I also consider queer space as both an act of personal and political intervention, as wen as a state in which we are able to transport our physical and conceptual bodies through modes or performance, actions, thought, and magical thinking. One outcome of queer approaches to understanding culture and history is that we may believe in the political potency of a less, rather than a more, certain world, one that takes us beyond a binary thinking of "gay" and "straight” and opens up a space for considering the familiar and unfamiliar in ways we don't always expect.

It's a Girl

Recently I was chased out of the cruising stalls of a pornographic bookstore, the owner yelling behind me, "It's a girl... it’s a girl!” A large part of my cruising experience consists of silently training myself to read body language and social codes, and keeping myself safe and undercover in the process. Even though in the moment I am cruising I may not mentally relate to a female body, it is impossible to forget that I must cover my female identifers in order to pass, as well as to ensure my own physical safety. Protection becomes part of the turn-on. I mostly watch, stroke my strap-on, and occasionally, when it's dark enough, jerk someone off. Many people ask me how I physically get off from this experience, as I do not touch my cunt, or come. I get off the same way! do when I receive a blow job while packing or wearing a strap-on. I slip into a body that is of another faction within my queerness, and I push myself to discover this mental state of arousal.

The Male and Female Cruiser

In When Men Meet, Henning Bech opens with the description of the experience of a woman trying to pass as a man in a male bathhouse:

She notices how the usual social hierarchy is replaced here by another — condition of body, size of penis, age — and the tension, competition, anxiety that go along with it; but also the possibility of total abandon in the darker rooms, of losing oneself in anonymity and carnal desire... she wants to have this option for herself as well.

Bech brings up an important distinction concerning the politics of touch in relation to gender. In the above quote, the female figure thinks about her ideal bathhouse cruising space as a place where women have the option of not just engaging in anonymity and sexual contact, but also as a space where intimate touch and erotic gazing occur. This brought to mind my experience at an all-female spa located in Chicago. Although many women attend this spa knowing that it is owned by lesbians, and that this space embraces an "all body types welcome” ideal, a tension exists between nude women who are sharing this public/private atmosphere. My experiences there have not been ones of sexual/erotic cruising but rather of a type of cruising where participants silently compare the image of one body to the next. Picture being in the locker room after gym class, and all the girls are examining the way your stomach hangs.

Returning to Bech's female cruiser, I am reminded of the way my heterosexual-identifed male friends embrace; they hug either with humor, arousal, anxiety, or all three. They flirt with each other by exchanging stories about who has made out with the most girls, or who has worker out the most that week. They find a common ground where they are comfortable being together without having to explain why they crave a certain intimacy from one another. Their touch seems to be charged with a type of potential that is generally ignored by both parties. Thus, I imagine them standing as still as possible on crowded subways, so as not to accidentally brush arms with the man standing next to them, for fear a woman might see. Similarly, whenever the subject of anything relating to the anus is brought up, I have noticed my straight-identifed male friends often freak out, as if even talking about the anus labels them homosexual.

We are always cruising. Whether we are sizing up each other's bodies at the gym, looking for a fuck, or people-watching at a café, the cruising body is everywhere. The idea of cruising is sexy, exciting, and irresponsible. In the moment of the cruise itself, cruisers may transcend the physical space they are inhabiting. In this moment I believe gender and sexual identity can (and should) be left at the door, allowing bodies to mesh into a blinding transcendence.”

Their bags are packed for the first day back tomorrow, even though they don’t have early classes. It felt good to stop his nerves by preparing and Isak followed suit. 

Right now Isak’s asleep more or less on him. They started watching a random swedish crime movie that was on and after Even started to scratch his nails over his head again and again Isak stretched like a giant house cat, repositioned himself half onto Even and fell asleep pretty much directly after that. 

After all the christmas fuss, new years and meeting their friends and meeting all the family members it felt so good to take this weekend to just come back home. To do nothing apart from unpacking - even though they haven’t completely done that - and some grocery shopping.

Even humms and tightens the arms around the sleeping boy on his chest when he realises that it really felt like coming back home. 

He thought it would maybe feel weird to leave his parents house again, It still feels like home there too but also... not at all. It makes no sense but he can’t find a better way to describe it.

Coming home into their flat with the familiar smell and Isak lazily throwing his winter jacket onto the floor settled something in his gut. 

Home. They’re home.
