Miami Medical - what the hell
OUAT inadvertently brought Dr Eva Zambrano into my life when I inevitably started going through Lana’s filmography.
Why world? Why have you brought this sweet, innocent child to my life, only to have her stay for 13 freaking episodes?!
Tumblr media
Listen, it's obviously a run-of-the-mill medical show. A bunch of cliche story lines thrown together. But Eva. Eva. God damn it. Such a great character. Hardass but incredibly kind and compassionate doctor? Who's an immigrant and looks after her patients beyond saving them from their physical injuries? Who's willing to take personal risks in order to uphold her values? A person who will cry after a patient dies, even though she works in an environment that in reality becomes more and more dehumanizing as medical personnel is brought to the edge of sanity by constantly working in understaffed and overworked conditions?
I just want to wrap her up in lots of blankets and makes sure the world won't hurt her 😭
Beyond the wonder that is Eva Zambrano, lets talk sexism because, come on, it's me, I'll talk about the sexism.
The show wasn't without its sexist issues, and while they managed to largely steer clear of the worst offences there was something that made me snort in derision: Proctor not telling Eva what happened the night he took her home after she had too much to drink.
Mate. You're not being mysterious when you're dodging her and not giving her a straight answer when she asks what happened on a night she doesn't remember, while you were there, sober enough to know every detail. You're being an asshole. A major asshole. For all she knew, you, her boss, assaulted her. Get fucked or get your story straight.
Proctor gets extra points in being a major cunt when after he explains to her that nothing happened (at the end of the episode, obviously), and she thanks him for being a gentleman, i.e. for not taking advantage of her, his co-worker, when she had a bad case of too much to drink on an empty stomach, he says something along the lines of "yeah, I'm a gentleman, my biggest flaw". I.e. yeah, I didn't assault you, what an idiot I am. Get fucked, Proctor.
Obviously, the whole thing was to set-up a love triangle between Eva, her boss, and the other doctor. However, as with most "love triangles" this is actually more of a corner, with the woman stuck between 2 guys, and it was awful. And Eva deserved better.

Eva Zambrano vol 2 - Immigration
God damn it. That I'd get sucked into a mediocre - at best - show, because of 1 freaking character.
I'll make this one quick. The show does an episode on Eva's arrival in the US, as an immigrant, with her family. Her mom dies from illness due to the horrible conditions they lived through during the trip. Her dad was a doctor in Cuba, but didn't get a medical license in the US *and* he had to raise a 6 year old (Eva) by himself.
The way people regard immigration, generally, is that humans leave a place that's bad, for a place that's better. That's hardly ever true. I'd say there are as many stories of immigration as there are immigrants. My mom is an immigrant, and she never thought of her country of origin as a place she had to escape from. Just a place that couldn't offer her what she needed at the time. She missed it desperately for many years, all her family is still there, and she wants to return to it when she retires.
All I'm saying is, sure, there are cases where people immigrate to escape horrible realities like war, famine, etc. But there are also cases, like that of Eva's, where people take a chance and it all goes to hell.
I bet there wasn't a day when either one of them didn't wonder how things would have turned out, if they had stayed in Cuba. And that has to be accepted as a valid sentiment. No country is perfect, certainly not the US, and immigrants don't owe the country of arrival any "debts" for accepting them.
Migrating populations bring work, culture, and money, and while there are millions of immigrants around the world, it's sad that situations where that's discussed as anything other than "X is the best country in the world and we're forever indebted that it's accepted us" are so hard to come by.
Anyway, Eva Zambrano rocks.
P.S. I do wonder about her dad not being able to practice medicine in the US, having studied in Cuba. *Cuba*. The place where people travel thousands of miles to, to get high quality medical treatment. The country that practically exports doctors. That country. Anyway, what do I know about the American medical system, nada.
