Evdoxia (Eva) Mendoza
OK, maybe I'll actually write more for her soon, but at least I introduced her this year... it's a start! Eva is my F!OC and Ethan's eventual LI in my Tobias x Casey world. My FC is the beautiful Maria Luiza Mendes.
Photo Dump | Vol. 1
Do you have a million pictures of your MC/ OCs saved up? Do you spend hours upon hours searching the internet for those perfect pictures all while lamenting the fact that you probably won't end up using them for anything? Well, now you can! You can dump them in a reblog here! Every week, we will dump random pictures of our characters just for the sake of telling the world (or the twenty people left in the fandom) all about your baby. You can dump the pictures and go OR you can add HCs/comments about each picture (OR a third secret thing). The rules are: 1) Have fun. 2) Be kind to each other. 3) Maybe consider supporting/hyping others who share their pics?
Let's begin! This week, reblog with 6 pictures you saved of your MC/ OC!

Karma is a... Barbie Premiere (2/2)
In part two, we learn a little more about Dr. Eva Mendoza, (a new OC in my Tobias & Casey world. An Introduction), and find out about her and Etahn's rocky start. Now that Tobias & Casey have them calling a truce, what does the future hold? 💄💗💋
I changed this a little because I'm going to see Barbie tomorrow. I didn't feel right commenting on the movie prior to seeing it. But, if I feel it's helpful to the story, I'll write a drabble about the conversation the four of them have over drinks after. :)
Karma is a Barbie Premier - Part 1
Book: Open Heart (Post Series) Pairings: Tobias Carrick x F!MC (Casey) Ethan Ramsey x F!OC (Eva) - Maybe? Rating: Teen Words: 2,300

Karma is a Barbie Premier - Part 1
A few days later at work.
The morning was busier than usual at Edenbrook, something most appreciated. Being busy was better than being idle. It made the day go faster, and lunchtime arrived before they knew it. The diagnostic team members on duty headed to the office for a working lunch.
After discussing current cases and determining a few new ones to bring in, they had fifteen minutes to spare. Tobias threw his feet on the desk with a yawn, and Casey rushed to put her food in the microwave, but Ethan started for the door.
“Woah, woah, woah!” Tobias called after him. “Where are you going?”
“It’s a hospital, Tobias. I’m going back to work.”
“Not for fifteen minutes, you’re not. Sit down and eat... and don’t tell me you had a smoothie. That doesn’t count as lunch.”
“It does if it contains spinach.”
“Ethan,” Tobias said, putting half his pot roast on a plate for Ethan. “You really need to live a little.”
Ethan turned to Casey for support, but she just shrugged.
“Don’t look at me. I agree. Take a few minutes to eat.”
Ethan sat down with a heavy sigh and started shoveling the delicious food into his mouth. Tobias and Casey had the right idea, though he wasn’t going to admit it.
“See,” Tobias teased, seeing the smile on his friend’s face. “This is why I’m here... to make sure you enjoy life a little.”
“Oh, that’s your reason for existence?” Ethan shot back. “Not your wife, your daughter, not even your career, but to be a persistent pain in my ass.”
“Hey, the others may be more important, but the last one has longevity. I’m not letting it go.”
“Oy, boy...” Ethan grumbled, noticing Casey had stopped eating. “Hey, are you done?” He asked.
“Sure am. Want the rest of mine?”
“If you’re not going to eat it...” he said, pulling her plate in his direction.
“It’s almost as good as a spinach smoothie,” Tobias chuckled.
“Fine!” He surrendered. “I’ll give you this one... just this one.”
“See!” Tobias boasted. “You need to listen to me more often!”
“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.”
Casey laughed, watching the two world-class doctors squabbling like little boys. “I’m with Tobias,” she grinned. “You do need to have more fun. I’m glad you’re going to the Barbie premiere with us.”
“Yeah, about that...” Ethan started.
“Screw you, Ramsey. Don’t even try to weasel out of it!”
“But, Barbie...”Ethan whined.
“I think you’ll be surprised, Ethan,” Casey offered. “From what I’ve read, it’s going to be a lot more meaningful than you’d think. Regardless, it’s a big premiere, and we’ll have fun!”
“Fine! Who else is coming? Trinh?”
Casey shot a look at Tobias. “You haven’t told him?”
“Told him what?” Ethan groaned.
“Hadn’t gotten around to it yet, baby.”
Casey rolled her eyes. “OK, before I tell you... this is in no way, shape, or form a setup...”
“Oh, God...”
“The day Tobias asked you, I had already asked Eva, and...”
“OK. No. Forget it.”
“Ethan!” Casey scolded. “Why not? You two are so weird. You sure looked cozy at our wedding, but since then...” she shook her head. “Ethan, she’s a colleague and our friend. All you have to do is be polite. It’s not a date!”
“Well,” Tobias simpered. “In fairness, it’s our date night.”
“Our date night, Tobias! Not theirs!”
“Does she know I’m going?” Ethan asked.
“Yes, she wasn’t overly enthusiastic either, but she didn’t try to back out! Now... put your big boy pants on because you’re going to see Barbie!”
Ethan shot a look at Casey. “Please repeat that sentence, and you’ll see how wrong it sounded.”
Casey looked at her watch with a sigh. “I have a consult in five. You two babysit yourselves. And Ethan, make sure you wear something pink to the premiere.”
“I am not wearing pink!” He hollered after her as Tobias spooned the last of his pot roast into his mouth with a smirk.
“Oh, you’re wearing pink!”
~~~~~
The day of the premiere arrived, and Casey bounced around with the excitement of a child. Tobias slipped his pink sweater over his head as she entered the room. A slow whistle escaped him as he took her in from her fuschia high heels that perfectly matched her flouncy tutu to the pink and black floral corset that had him forgetting they were expected anywhere.
“Damn, baby. You know, we don’t have to go. Mom’s watching Sammy, and we could have a perfectly enjoyable night right here.”
“I’m sure we could,” she giggled. “But have you forgotten our friends are coming along, too?”
“No, watching them may be more entertaining than the movie.”
“It’s possible.”
“Hey,” he said as they headed to the car. “When we get there, let’s rush to our seats so they have to sit next to each other.”
“You’re terrible,” Casey laughed.
“All part of my charm, hon. All part of my charm.”
They picked up Eva first.
“You look amazing!” Eva beamed as she slid into the back of the car.
“Thank you!” Tobias replied enthusiastically.
“Not you, jackass. Your wife!”
“Yeah,” he smiled, taking Casey’s hand. “She looks hot as hell.”
“I didn’t say she... you know... never mind.”
“You look beautiful, too. Eva,” Casey laughed.
“Not as festive as you,” she replied. “But I managed to find a pink tank top to wear.”
“Hey, that’s all that matters!”
“Speaking of pink,” Tobias said as they pulled in front of Ethan’s. “Ethan better be wearing pink. I’ve told him a half dozen times....” his voice trailed as Ethan came into view, wearing a long-sleeved grey t-shirt, jeans, and a bit of a scowl.
“You were saying?” Eva grinned.
“That fucker isn’t wearing pink!”
“Hello, everyone.” Ethan nodded as he entered the car.
“You’re not wearing pink!” Tobias admonished. “How many times did I tell you... wear pink?”
“And how many times did I tell you... no?”
“Ethan, you’re such a party pooper,” Casey sighed.
“And you’re...” he stalled, looking over Casey’s ensemble. “...Barbie.”
“Which is fitting... since we’re going to a Barbie premiere!” Tobias groused.
“Children,” Eva scolded. “Behave, or no one gets dessert after dinner.”
“Oh, I’m getting dessert,” Tobias snickered. “Trust me...”
“Oh, for God’s sake,” Ethan grumbled.
“What?” Eva laughed. “I think they’re kind of cute.”
“It may have been cute in high school. I’d even say in college if they had a few drinks in them. But at their age... It’s not cute anymore.”
“You’re right,” Eva replied. “It’s adorable.”
Tobias caught Ethan’s eyes in the rearview mirror. “Looks like you’re outnumbered, Pal.”
“What else is new?”
The conversation lagged, and every attempt at small talk faltered too quickly, usually with Ethan or Eva disagreeing with one another or locking horns. Tobias mouthed, “Music?” to Casey, but she couldn’t ignore the eight-hundred-pound gorilla in the room.
“So,” she stated. “What’s the deal with you two? Eva, I know you and Tobias had some beef back in Kenmore, but you’re nice to each other now. This begs one question. What did Ethan do?”
“Hey!” Ethan jumped in. “Why do you assume it was me?”
“Because it was,” Eva deadpanned.
“That’s not true! We didn’t meet under the best of circumstances, but I have apologized.”
“It was new intern day, wasn’t it?” Casey asked.
“How’d you guess?” Eva replied.
“Because that’s probably the worst day to ever meet Ethan.”
Ethan hit Tobias’s shoulder. “Aren’t you going to defend me?”
“Ow!” Tobias frowned. “I was planning on... if they said anything inaccurate, which they haven’t. But you broke the pink rule, and now you’re assaulting me. Sorry, I’m on their side!”
“Yes!” Casey cheered. “Now, Eva, what did he do?”
“It all started when I got a page. Someone needed an interpreter....”
“You’re not really going to share this, are you?” Ethan protested.
“Oh, this has to be good,” Tobias goaded. “Spill, Eva, and drinks are on me tonight.”
“Drinks are already on you,” Eva retorted. “But...”
As Casey and Tobias waited with bated breath, Eva noticed the pained look in Ethan’s eyes, and she decided to refrain.
“You know what, it doesn’t matter. It’s old news.”
Tobias’s face fell in disappointment. “I am so not buying drinks!”
“It was a shitty day,” Ethan started. “ I was... less than cheerful.”
“Read: you were being a jerk,” Tobias smiled.
“BINGO!” Eva replied.
“Anyway...” Ethan continued. “I had a very difficult patient who insisted they didn’t need an interpreter, but they didn’t speak any of the four languages I do...”
“Ethan,” Eva whispered, gently touching his arm. “You don’t have to.”
“No,” he replied. “I want to. These are my friends, and I’ve apologized to you, but perhaps I haven’t done it well enough, and I’d like the chance to do it again.”
“Guys, we’re just playing around. You don’t have to...” Casey started, but Ethan interrupted.
“I do. I had this total PITA patient. Their blood pressure was dropping, and I couldn’t get any medical history from them. Throw in it was new intern day. Several kept buzzing in and out for one ridiculous reason or another, completely grating my nerves. So, I called the nurses’ desk and asked them to find a Greek interpreter on staff. They sent someone who spoke Bulgarian. How does that help? So, I called again, and they sent someone who spoke Turkish. The patient is sicker by the moment, and I’m about to lose my mind when Eva walks in.”
“Now, it was my first day at Edenbrook, too... and Ethan assumed I was an intern.”
“Oh, no...” Casey groaned.
“I walked in, all eager to help. I said, ‘Hello, I’m Dr. Eva Mendoza. I hear you need an interpreter.’”
“And I turned around and said... “Those damn idiots can’t get a thing right. I need a Greek translator! I’m going to have those imbeciles fired!”
“I’m trying to explain I’m fluent in Greek, but I can’t get a word in...”
“So I tell her, I speak Spanish. I don’t need a Spanish interpreter, an intern much less, and you can go.”
“Oh, Jesus...” Tobias moaned.
“I stepped around him and started talking to the patient in Greek. Ethan looked like a deer in the headlights... after it got hit.”
“That’s a pretty good assessment of how I felt.”
“After we stabilized the patient, we went outside, and Ethan tried to apologize. But I wasn’t having it.”
“Rightfully so. She gave me a huge piece of her mind.”
“I informed him I wasn’t an intern, but a fellow... and assuming I could only speak Spanish because of my name was a bias and unacceptable. I’m half Greek, and I happen to speak four languages.”
“She didn’t say it quite so politely,” Ethan chuckled.
“Good!” Casey countered.
“I apologized profusely, but she turned on her heel, and I’m pretty sure steam was coming out of her ears.”
“An accurate depiction,” Eva corroborated. “But as much as I thought you were an utter idiot that day, you have apologized several times.”
“But you still think badly of me, and whenever I feel like I’ve knocked down a piece of the wall you built around me, you quickly build it back up again. I don’t get a second chance at a first impression, but I hope you’ll let me start fresh. It was a bad day, and I acted out of character. But I’m not that guy. The sad thing is, we’re surrounded by people who are... that guy... but they aren’t as hot-headed as me, and you’ll never see it. They don’t lose sleep over messing up like I did.”
“You lost sleep?” Eva asked.
“I have. So, it might be asking too much, but can we start fresh? If you don’t want to, I’ll leave right now. I won’t ruin the night for you. But I’d really like a second chance.”
“Ethan,” Eva sighed. “You don’t get out of seeing Barbie that easily. And if I were to ask you to go home, it would be because you broke the pink rule. If I’m wearing pink, you should be wearing pink! But thank you for the explanation and your umpteenth apology. I’m sorry for choosing to see the worst in you, even though you have shown other sides. I can be stubborn as the day is long, and that’s on me.”
“So,” she said, extending her hand. “I’m Dr. Eva Mendoza, and you are?”
“I’m Dr. Ethan Ramsey,” he smiled. “And it’s a pleasure to meet you.”
“This is like the end of a Hallmark movie,” Tobias joked from the front.
“Honey, you’ve obviously never seen a Hallmark movie,” Casey laughed. “So, are we all friends now?” Now, are we all friends?”
“Yeah,” Ethan smiled. “We’re friends.”
“Good!” Tobias smiled. “And Ethan, your face is so flushed. You kind of do have pink on now.”
“Oh, but that’s not nearly good enough,” Eva laughed. “Tobias, stop the car!”
“Why?”
“I need to stop at that street vendor. That pink boa would perfectly compliment Ethan’s outfit.”
“Yes!” Casey clapped as Tobias pulled over.
“No, oh no!” Ethan yelled.
“You could have just worn the pink polo shirt I gave you, bro. This is all on you.”
Giggling like a schoolgirl, Eva returned to the car with the pink boa, gleefully handing it to Ethan.
“If I wear this, am I 100% forgiven?”
“Yep,” Eva smiled. “Unless you do something stupid again.”
“Oh, good,” Tobias chuckled, pulling up to the valet. “We should have at least fifteen minutes before he does that.”
“OK, this ride has been nice but way too serious. Can we walk the red carpet and get our Barbie on?”
“Yes, dear,” Tobias smiled.
“You really are a whole new Tobias, aren’t you?” Eva said in wonderment. “Speaking of that,” Ethan said as he shut the car door behind him. “What was this beef you had with Carrick at Kenmore? You and I may have more in common than I initially thought.”
El Dia de los Muertos
Book: Open Heart (post series)
Pairing: Casey McTavish- Carrick x Tobias Carrick, Ethan Ramsey x F!OC Eva Mendoza, F!OC Vivian Carrick
Word count: 761
Category: fluff
Rating: PG
Warnings: mentions of character death, birth complications.
Summary: It is the Halloween after Tobias and Casey welcome Kayla and Eva feels like that it would be nice to commemorate El Dia de los Muertos.
Disclaimer: Characters belong to Pixelberry and Jerzwriter.
Authors note: I hope you like my Halloween adjacent Treat Elsa.
🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃
All was organized chaos in the Carrick household, work, various Halloween parties, trick or treating keeping everyone on their toes. Everyone though was excited for a few days when Ethan and Eva were to come for a visit.
It had been a rough time, Tobias nearly losing Casey had made everyone come to grips to a degree with their own mortality. Eva by no means was a practicing Catholic, despite being brought up with many of the traditions but she felt it prudent that this year they commemorate El Dia de Los Muertos. They all had people that had passed that they would love to commemorate. So Eva and Casey organized it all. The men were not aware of what was to happen. Casey already had the Ofrendas organized and Eva had organized the flowers to be delivered on the day. Casey also invited Vivian so that she could participate also.
The day came and Casey was excited. Eva and Ethan arrived in the morning. Ethan went to the clinic to meet with Tobias while Eva stayed at the house with Casey and Kayla. Casey and Eva set up the Ofrendas. There were photos of Charles Carrick, Casey’s grandma Nonna Katerina, Mrs Martinez as well as some of Eva’s grandparents. They got to cooking. It was going to be a celebratory feast.
Ethan and Tobias came home with Sammy and Brooke. Both were a little perplexed at what was happening.
“Myself and Casey have planned a little El Dia de Los Muertos celebration.” Said Eva. After the last year me and Casey felt that it would be nice to celebrate the day of the dead.”
Both men nodded in agreement. Casey added “yes Tobias, Vivian is coming over too.”
Right on cue there was a knock on the door. It was Vivian.
Tobias was not surprised to see his mother but Vivian was surprised to see Ethan and Eva.
“Hello Vivian” said Ethan.
“Ethan, darling, Eva, how lovely to see you…” Vivian spies the Ofrendas. “What is that?”
“It is an Ofrendas. Me and Casey thought it would be nice to have an El Dia de Los Muertos celebration.” Said Eva.
“But you are Cuban, not Mexican.” Says Vivian.
“I may not be Mexican but many of the Spanish speaking Catholics have some type of celebration for it. I may not be practicing anymore but I do like the sentiments behind it.” Said Eva.
“So do I, dear, so do I.” Said Vivian, clearly emotional.
Everyone partook in the feast. After dinner Vivian and Casey put Kayla to bed whilst Eva, Tobias Ethan as well as Brooke and Sammy shared memories and stories about the people on the Ofrendas. The girls also learnt more about the cultural significance of the Day of the dead as well as All Hallows Eve and All Souls’ Day. It was time for Brooke and Sammy to go to bed. After they went the celebration turned emotional with much more stories shared about Charles, especially by Vivian and also Tobias.
“Thankfully I am not up there after the birth of Kayla” said Casey.
Tobias nodded in agreement, clearly emotional. “That is an emotional hell that I do not care to live through, ever again.” Said Tobias.
“At least if I did go you would have known how proud I was of you and how much I loved you.” Said Casey.
“That is true.” Said Tobias.
“I take comfort in that at least I know he would be proud.” Said Tobias.
Vivian nodded in agreement. “He was upset and I am sure that he wished he had longer…”
“Please do not be in a hurry to join him, please. Vivian.” Said Casey.
“I will be sticking around for awhile, I enjoy my grandchildren and my daughter in law far too much.” Said Vivian with a chuckle. “Charles would have loved to have been a grandfather, that much I do know.”
The night continued, and it was truly a celebration of those who had gone before and more importantly everyone was able to appreciate what they had currently , especially Tobias and Casey.
The night came to an end. Vivian went back to her townhouse while Ethan and Eva stayed with Tobias and Casey.
“That was a lovely thought you and Eva had.” Said Tobias.
“It was a joyous evening, I think Vivian also enjoyed being involved too.”
“Not that my mother ever needs another reason to come over but yeah, it was lovely to invite her.”
Casey and Tobias decide to put the Ofrendas up next year also.
——-
Authors note:
I know it was for Halloween but there was an evolution of an idea. Initially it was a Halloween party with Eva convincing Ethan to go dressed up as if they were doing a full El Dia de Los Muertos celebration but then it evolved to a more intimate gathering as was in the fic, actually I wanted an excuse to add Vivian really.
I hope you enjoyed your treat Elsa. Your friendship and support has being a treat to me and the fandom as a whole.
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe Review: An Earnest Exploration of Friendship
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe is a coming-of-age film adaptation of Benjamin Alire Sáenz's beloved 2012 novel of the same name. This cinematic journey takes viewers through the summer of 1987, where fifteen-year-old Aristotle Mendoza, played by Max Pelayo, embarks on a transformative friendship with Dante Quintana, portrayed by Reese Gonzales. While the film touches on various themes, including friendship, identity, family, and love, it ultimately falls short of achieving the depth and emotional resonance found in the source material. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3yV0Hzj8jM The movie begins by introducing us to Ari and Dante, two boys with contrasting personalities and backgrounds. Their initial meeting at the local pool marks the start of a poignant friendship, one that is built on a foundation of shared experiences and personal revelations. The classical namesake they both bear serves as a poetic metaphor for their unique connection, a connection that promises to uncover the secrets of the universe. The Good: Director Aitch Alberto captures the essence of their budding friendship beautifully, emphasizing the genuine moments of connection that occur between Ari and Dante. Their interactions feel natural and unforced, and the film is at its strongest when it delves into the heartwarming moments of their camaraderie. Dante's role as Ari's mentor, introducing him to literature and poetry, is particularly touching, as it showcases the power of friendship to inspire personal growth. However, the film stumbles when it comes to portraying the depth of the characters and their inner struggles. While the novel delves into their innermost thoughts and emotions, the movie often leaves these aspects unexplored or only superficially touched upon. The result is that some of the emotional impact and character development that made the book so compelling are lost in translation. One pivotal moment in the film is the accident that leaves Ari severely injured while saving Dante from an oncoming car. This incident serves as a turning point in their friendship, bringing their families closer together and setting the stage for deeper connections to be explored. The film captures the essence of this moment effectively, conveying the gravity of the situation and its impact on both families. Eva Longoria and Eugenio Derbez deliver heartfelt performances as Dante's parents, adding depth to the story's exploration of family dynamics. As the story unfolds, the film explores Dante's struggles with his sexuality and his move to Chicago, which adds an extra layer of complexity to his character. Reese Gonzales does an admirable job portraying Dante's vulnerability and the challenges he faces in accepting himself. However, the film falls short in fully addressing the depth of Dante's internal conflict and self-discovery, leaving his character feeling somewhat underdeveloped. Max Pelayo's portrayal of Ari is solid, capturing the character's introspective and reserved nature. Ari's journey of self-discovery and coming to terms with his feelings for Dante is at the core of the narrative. While Pelayo delivers a commendable performance, the film fails to fully explore Ari's inner turmoil and the complexity of his emotions, leaving some viewers wanting more depth and insight into his character. The supporting cast, including the talented Eugenio Derbez as Ari's father and Eva Longoria as Dante's mother, provides strong performances that enhance the overall emotional resonance of the film. Their interactions with their respective sons add authenticity and depth to the family dynamics portrayed on screen. One of the film's most powerful moments occurs when the truth about Ari's brother, Bernardo, is revealed. This revelation is a poignant exploration of the impact of family secrets and societal prejudices. It adds a layer of depth to the film's themes of identity and acceptance, highlighting the importance of confronting uncomfortable truths. The film also tackles the issue of violence and discrimination faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in the 1980s, as seen through Dante's experience of being attacked for his sexual orientation. While this aspect of the story is a vital and relevant commentary, it is not explored in as much depth as it could be, leaving a sense of missed opportunity to shed light on the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ youth during that era. The Bad: One of the film's notable shortcomings is its handling of Ari and Dante's romantic relationship. While the novel beautifully portrays the evolution of their love and the complexities of their feelings for each other, the film often rushes through these moments, leaving their romantic connection feeling underdeveloped and lacking the depth it deserves. Overall: Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe is a commendable adaptation of Benjamin Alire Sáenz's novel, featuring strong performances from its cast and capturing the essence of the source material's themes of friendship, identity, and acceptance. However, the film falls short in fully exploring the depth of its characters' inner struggles and their romantic relationship. Despite its shortcomings, it remains a heartfelt coming-of-age story that offers moments of genuine emotion and connection. While it may not fully satisfy fans of the novel, it still serves as a valuable addition to the genre of LGBTQ+ cinema, shedding light on the challenges faced by young individuals in the 1980s while on their journey of self-discovery. ❀ *◦sean teale. cis man. he/him. pansexual. ⇝ hey, isn’t that rio mendoza? i think that the thirty two year old from milwaukee, wi, works as a mechanic and shop manager at wrench it, but outside of that people describe them as grease stained hands with a gentle touch, the crack ice makes as a frozen lake starts to thaw, lazy tousled hair forgotten in a rush, a coin left on the sidewalk, a half finished shopping list left in a book, the thwack a shoe makes as it makes contact with a soccer ball, and a stone cold forgotten cup of coffee. i hear they are forgetful & dense, but they are also known to be loyal & fun loving. consider giving them a visit at their home in seal harbor apartments and get to know why they’re called the halcyon. ( Katie, she/her, 31, EST )
Name: Rio Gabriel Mendoza
Gender: Cis-Man
Pronouns: He/Him
Birthday: June 1 1991 (32 Years Old)
Hometown: Milwaukee, WI
Orientation: Pansexual
Relationship Status: Single
Occupation: Manager and Mechanic at Wrench It
Residence: Seal Harbor Apartments
Education: Associates Degree from Milwaukee Area Technical College
Languages: English (Fluent), Spanish (Fluent), American Sign Language (Basic)
Family: His father is named Raphael and his mother is Teresa. He has two younger sisters, Carla is twenty seven, and Eva is twenty two.
--
Halcyon: Hal.Cy.On (adj.) denoting a period of time in the past that was idyllically happy and peaceful.
--
Backstory:
Rio’s parents met at the University of Wisconsin when their mutual friends decided that the two had to meet and would get along with one another, fortunately they guessed correctly. For Raphael, a scholarship student from the DC metro area, Teresa was a spark of fire in an unfamiliar and cold city, away from his family. Teresa meanwhile was attracted to Raphael’s goofy personality and kind heart. Not long after graduation, the two were married and moved to Milwaukee for Raphael’s job and there they decided to put down roots.
Their timing was beneficial because Rio came not long after that with Carla and then little Eva finishing out their family. Since they were closer geographically to Teresa’s family, who lived mostly in Wisconsin, the three siblings got along better with their cousins on that side as opposed to Raphael’s family who remained in the DC Metro area. The relationship is friendly, but not as close although in more recent years it is easier to keep in touch with that branch of the family tree.
Rio’s childhood was pretty tame and quiet, all things considered. He would play outside with the neighborhood kids, go to the nearby elementary school, and took to playing soccer as a defender. He ended up playing through high school but the soccer team was not as widely popular as the basketball or football ones, something that suited him just fine. Academic wise, Rio tried his best and usually ended up averaging in the high C’s, low B’s range. He definitely is more of a hands on learner and prefers to learn more “useful” things than just how to pass tests.
When Rio graduated in 2009 from high school, he struggled for a bit, trying to decide what to do. While his parents encouraged him to think about college, there wasn’t a particular field that grabbed him and after a year of trying a few part time jobs, he decided that he needed some kind of degree and enrolled in the local community college. Gabe did enjoy himself at MATC, and a lot of the classes were good at appealing to his desire to know why what they were learning was useful outside of academia, but once he got his associate’s degree he had already decided that transferring to a four year university and continuing school was not for him.
While Rio was in college, he met a girl named Rebecca. The two got along well and since there was attraction there, they began dating. Rebecca was more outgoing and heled Gabriel overcome some of his desire to coast along and not draw attention to himself, to take pride in the accomplishments that he did do. The relationship was fairly serious, to the point most of them shared the same friend circles and they had moved into an apartment together. Rio really loved Rebecca and since he had been raised with the stories of how his parents met, he thought that they would eventually get married.
Then he came home one day to find Rebecca in bed with another man and the illusion he had made in his mind about their relationship crashed to his feet. He found out that Rebecca had been cheating on him for years with different guys and that his supposed friend group knew about her infidelity and never let him know. Heartbroken, Rio packed his things and turned to his family, who were just as upset as he was. Once everything was over and finalized, Rio tried to stay in the area but everything was too painful so he headed north. One of his best friends from high school lived out near Anchorage and they had been one of the few friends Rio was close to who hadn’t known about what Rebecca was doing.
Rio still goes back home to Milwaukee when he can, for example when his baby sister graduated high school and when Carla got her degree. He also will spend the occasional Christmas down there. But it can be difficult to make the trip back to Wisconsin on a whim. He initially got a job as a mechanic at Wrench It and throughout the few years he has been in the area he has eventually taken on the store manager position. Rio isn’t necessarily happy with his current residence and has been saving money to move somewhere better in the area. It also seems wise to keep a small nest egg in case something unexpected happens. He has yet to try to date again after his heartbreak and has been throwing himself into his work, although the hurt has definitely dulled now.
Tobias & Ethan pushing each other's buttons is my kryptonite. lol The glee Tobias feels when he wins is just palpable, and he gets to feel that more often than Ethan, simply because even when Ethan "gets" Tobias, T usually just laughs, and Ethan's like "Wait, you're not supposed to do that!" lol
And oh, Bryce would have been all over this. His Malibu Ken outfit would have been ready in no time! And I FREAKING LOVE the art you had made! BRILLIANT!
Thanks so much for checking this out & sharing, hon! ❤️❤️❤️
Karma is... a Barbie Premiere (1/2)
I completely blame @jamespotterthefirst for this! It started as a simple edit, then it became a gossip page, and now it's a full-blown fic.
I've long hinted about Dr. Eva Mendoza joining as an OC in my Tobias & Casey world. She's only been briefly introduced once, but what better way to bring her back than for the Boston premiere of the Barbie movie? 💄💗💋 It's definitely a date for the Carrick's, but what about their friends, Ethan & Eva? No one can get a straight answer, and rumors are swirling.
Part 1 of fic below.
Book: Open Heart (Post Series) Pairings: Tobias Carrick x F!MC (Casey) Ethan Ramsey x F!OC (Eva) - Maybe? Rating: Teen Words: 1,700 Summary: Tobias scores tickets to the biggest event in Boston, and he & Casey each invite a friend. When they learn who each invited, the wheels start spinning. A/N: See above. It's all Bree's fault. lol. This is just a two-parter, and part two will be up later tonight. This was fun, I hope you enjoy it, too! Participating in @choicesflashfics (prompt in bold below)
It had been a brutally hot summer in Boston, leaving most residents eager for something to do indoors just to keep cool. That included the doctors at Edenbrook. So Casey was elated when Tobias told her he scored four tickets to the event of the summer, a premiere of the Barbie movie being held by a local charity. She had told him she didn’t mind missing it, but her reaction when he said they’d be going proved otherwise.
“So,” he smiled between breaths as Casey rolled off him and snuggled into his side. “I’m glad to see you really didn’t want to go.”
“Oh, stop,” she giggled with a playful shove. “You know we would have done that anyway.”
“Good point,” he agreed. “Now, who should we offer the other tickets to?”
“I don’t know. Why don’t we each pick a friend?”
“Bryce would be all over this, but he’ll be in Hawaii that week.”
“Same with Sienna. That’s the week she’s visiting her family. Jackie would rather have food poisoning.”
“I think you’re right about that,” he laughed. “Don’t worry, we’ll think of someone.”
_____
But with the movie premiere just a week away, neither had picked anyone to go, and they made a pact to correct that by the end of the day.
Casey was reading an article on her phone in the cafeteria when she heard a familiar voice. Desperate for adult conversation that didn’t involve medicine, she eagerly waved Eva over.
“Hey,” the stunning brunette smiled as she approached Casey’s table. “I saw you, but I didn’t want to interrupt. I thought this might be your only alone time.”
“Nah,” Casey smiled. “Tobias is a great hubby... he makes sure I breathing room when I need it. But what I need now is some mindless girl talk! I haven’t had that in ages!”
“Oh, wonderful,” Eva sighed. “I’ve never been terribly good at mindless girl talk, but I promise I’ll give it my best shot. What are we supposed to discuss? Boys? Make-up? Waxing?”
“No, silly!” Casey laughed. “It can be anything... just not work and nothing too serious. Like, tell me, do you have any summer plans?”
“Mmm, not really,” Eva replied, biting into her sandwich. “My first anniversary at Edenbrook is in September; I don’t have much vacation time until then.”
“Well, that sucks! I hope you’re doing some fun things anyway.”
“Oh, I am! I love exploring Boston. I’ve been going to a bunch of concerts and rollerskating in the parks... It’s sort of my thing!”
“Now, that is something I’d love to do with you!”
“You rollerskate!” Eva enthused.
“Ice skating is more my thing, but... transferable skills. I’m going to have to get a new pair of rollerskates. The last ones I owned were Barbie skates to show you how long it’s been.”
“So... last year,” Eva chuckled. “Sorry, you strike me as a woman who would wear Barbie rollerskates even now. And I don’t mean that as an insult.”
“Mmm,” Casey hummed. “GUILTY! But it really was some time ago.” Then, a lightbulb went off. “Hey! Wait! Were you a Barbie girl growing up?”
“Not exactly,” Eva sighed sadly. “I wanted to be. It’s so steeped in American culture; it’s a right of passage. But my traditional Greek and Cuban families felt they were too provocative. So, I only got to play with them when I visited my friends’ houses.”
“Well, that sucks!”
“I think my parents would have been OK with it, but my Abuela and Yiayia wielded far too much power with my Mother in those days. My father sneaked me off to the Barbie section when he took me to the toy store. He also encouraged playdates with Mindy Schumacker, and I believe her rivaling the Barbie Dreamhouse had something to do with it.”
“I think I’d like your Dad!” Casey smiled.
“I’m certain you would.”
“Well, I would be a failure as a physician if I didn’t do my part to help cure your Barbie Deficiency Syndrome! Tobias and I are going to the premiere at the IMAX next week, and I have a spare ticket. Want to join us?”
“Wait! Those tickets are impossible to get? How’d you score them?”
“My husband is a miracle worker,” Casey winked. “And he loves spoiling me.”
Eva shook her head. “I’ve known you a while now; I attended your wedding and witnessed that man being the most doting husband and father I’ve ever seen... but it’s still hard for me to reconcile that he’s the same man I knew back at Kenmore.”
“Well, love has a way of doing things to people. But I know he’d love it if you joined us. What do you say, are you in?”
“Oh, you couldn’t keep me away!”
_____
Tobias stepped into the Diagnostic Teams office, humming a song vaguely familiar to Ethan as he entered. Looking up from his paperwork, Dr. Ramsey feigned annoyance with his friend.
“I don’t understand how you’re always so chipper. You have a newborn and don’t sleep.”
“She’s three months old now, not a newborn.”
“Practically ready to go off to college then!” Ethan teased. “What were you humming... was that... Taylor Swift.”
Tobias raised a brow. “And what if it was? I have an excuse for humming it twenty-four/seven, and it’s called Casey. But what’s your story for knowing it?”
“Also, Casey! I’m trying to be supportive with her returning to work part-time, so I let her play the godforsaken stuff when we’re in here together.”
“She really can convince anyone to do anything, can’t she. Do you like any songs?”
"No."
Tobias stared at his friend with a wicked grin. "You always were a terrible liar. 'Fess up! What are your favorite Taylor songs?"
Ethan sat back in his chair and rocked as if deep in thought. “Some of her work from Folklore and Evermore is quite appealing. But if you tell Casey, I’ll fire you.”
“My lips are sealed,” Tobias laughed. “I heard you canceled your trip to the Cape. Everything all right? I’m happy to take over some of your work if you need help.”
“I appreciate the offer, but it’s not canceled. Just delayed. I was foolish to plan it around budget time.”
Tobias rubbed his chin as he studied his friend, his concern growing. “You know, Ethan... I’ve been a little worried about you. I’m a new dad, and I do more fun things than you. You need to work some playtime into your life.”
“Please,” Ethan groused. “I hope you’re not suggesting another boys' night out with Lahela. I have neither the budget nor the energy.”
“You damn well do have the budget! As for the energy, I can see how it's hard at your age. But you have to push through.”
“I’m a year older than you!” Ethan reminded.
“But you act twenty-two years older!”
“I can’t help it if you’re immature,” Ethan countered with a grin.
“Say! Case and I are going to the premiere of the Barbie movie next week...”
“She has you so pecked,” Ethan chuckled.
Ignoring him, Tobias informed him he had an extra ticket, Ethan was coming, and he wouldn’t take no for an answer.
“I’m more of an Oppenheimer person. Barbie isn’t exactly my thing.”
“I don’t care; you’re coming.”
“No, I’m not.”
“Fine,” Tobias grinned, picking up his phone and pretending to dial. “I hate to do this, but you leave me no choice.”
“What are you doing?”
“I’m letting Casey know how much you loved Folklore and Evermore. I’m even going to fabricate and tell her you’re experimenting with Midnights; she should play that for you on her next shift. Don’t worry, Ethan. You’ll love it!”
“Hang up that phone right now,” Ethan ordered.
“Too late!” Tobias smirked. “Casey, baby, how’s your day going? Guess who's coming with us to see Barbie? Ethan! I know it’ll be a blast. See you at home soon, hon.”
Ethan pinched the bridge of his nose. “I can’t believe you’re doing this to me.”
“Hey, it’s joining us at the Barbie movie once and maybe... gasp... having some fun... or listening to Taylor on loop for the remainder of time. I think you made a wise choice, Ethan.”
“I didn’t make a choice!”
“Oh, you did,” Tobias winked as he left the room. “You’ll need to wear something pink!” he hollered as he entered the hall.
“I don’t own anything pink!”
“Good, you have time to fix that!”
_____
Tobias opened the front door to his home and couldn’t help but smile. Casey stood just beyond the foyer, holding little Sammy on her hip as they danced to The Temptation's “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg.”
“Look!” Casey beamed, pointing towards him. “Daddy’s home! Now he can dance with us, too!”
“You better believe I am,” Tobias grinned. He took Sammy from Casey, then wrapped his arms around her hips. “I’m so glad you’re giving our daughter a balanced musical diet. It can’t be all Taylor, all the time.”
“Hey, my love of Motown is what sealed the deal and made you fall in love with me,” Casey said, kissing his cheek.
“Heh,” Tobias snickered. “It certainly impressed me, but that wasn’t what sealed the deal.”
“Oh, really, then what did?”
“Not in front of the baby, dear,” he grinned. “But hey, speaking of Taylor Swift, your fellow fan at work is joining us at the Barbie movie next week.”
“My fellow fan? I told you Sienna is away next week.”
“I know, but I’m talking about Ramsey.”
“ETHAN? Ethan is coming with us to the Barbie premiere?”
“Yeah,” Tobias replied. “He really needs to expand his horizons. I hope it’s OK with you.”
“Of course! It’s just... he doesn’t seem like the Barbie type.”
“He’s not,” Tobias laughed. “But we’re going to have so much fun with this. I even told him to wear pink!"
"We're going to have fun, for sure! But Ethan? The jury is out on that. There’s just one tiny problem, babe. I asked Eva to come along.”
Tobias’s face fell. “Oh, shit. They’re totally going to think we’re trying to hook them up.”
“Which we’re not,” Casey replied. “I mean, I would... but this wasn’t our intention.”
“Maybe not,” Tobias smirked. “But you know... me and karma vibe like that.”
“T.,” Casey said, shaking her head. “Please leave inserting Taylor quotes into situations to me... but... we are going to have so much fun with this!”
Tobias jiggled Samantha on his lap. “You hear that, Sammy? Your Mommy’s got ideas in that head. No one is safe now.”
