Personality:

On a personal level, Helena is a lighthearted and jokester, as a way to keep spirits and morale up in tough times. Although she can be quite stubborn and rather prideful about her skills (a quality Beth would inherit from her), she seldom ever brags unless she has a reason to, and is content to simply just do her job.

On a professional level, Helena is every bit stoic and harsh, completely locking in whenever the situation calls for it. She prioritizes completing the mission, while minimizing casualties as much as she can.

Due to this aspect of her, Helena was nicknamed "Helly" as a silly little play-on version of the shortened word "heli" from helicopter, although this was an endearing nickname from Henry.

Background:

Helena was born on August 19th, 1976, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Samuel Rorke and Marie Henrikson; she was their second child, two years after their son Gabriel. Marie worked as a schoolteacher, while Samuel was a retired Army veteran.

Helena and Gabriel's childhood was not glamorous; the family struggled financially, and Samuel, having fought in the Vietnam War some years earlier, was a raging alcoholic who frequently abused his wife and children, with Marie doing everything she could to shield her children from his violence. When Helena was ten years old, Marie was diagnosed with a terminal illness, and died within a few months of receiving the news. This led to the two siblings to have take odd jobs in their teenage years in order to support themselves and get by, as Samuel continued to drink and gamble away their money.

At the age of 18, Gabriel would eventually leave the house and enlist in the Marine Corps straight out of high school. Two years later, Helena would follow after him, although she signed onto the Air Force.

Helena would eventually meet a friend of Gabriel and Elias's, Henry Ashford. The two gradually formed a bond over time and fell in love; they got married in 1998, and a year later, they had twin girls, Elizabeth and Evangeline, in 1999.

In 2005, Helena would participate in Operation: Sand Viper in the ongoing Tel Aviv War. Due to her skills in managing aircraft, she assisted in saving lives by airlifting wounded soldiers and civilians out of the hospital. When all came to a standstill, this would mark the formation of the Ghosts, and due to her role, Helena would be the designated pilot of the task force, something she carried with pride.

In 2011, sometime after the formation of the Federation, while pursuing high ranking officials, Helena and a small squadron were ambushed, their helicopter being shot out of the sky and crashing in the Amazon Rainforest. The crash was fatal, and all those in the helicopter perished on impact. Helena's body would never be recovered, nor given a proper burial of a Ghost.

With her passing left her family and comrades in devastation. Henry would never remarry and remained a widower, and shifted his focus to raising their daughters. Her death would haunt the small family in the years to come, with Beth and Eva enlisting after the ODIN strikes to honor their mother's memory.

You Tube has some hidden gems on it. Many people are drawn to the newer movies like an "Oppenheimer", or the latest bing worthy series. For anyone interested in older movies, or very old movies, I have a few suggestions.

29th Street: the movie came out in the early 90's and like many movies in its genre, 29th st is a funny, pithy movie, and in the end it becomes heartfelt. Starring Danny Aiello and Anthony La Paglia. The plot takes place in both Queens, New York and Manhattan (on 29th st).

Like "City Island" that I recently watched, it deals with family and family issues. Aiello is at his comedic best, not since "Moonstruck" has he been so comical. I believe the story maybe a trues one... The Pesce family has become rich by way of La Paglia hitting the very first lottery. Aiello, the father of the family is a degenerate gambler and loses his money faster than he makes it. He continually gets in debt with the wise guys in his neighborhood.

The movie covers the 70's; the direction is excellent, and the cinematography covers New York City in the 70's perfectly. From the cars to the Vietnam War scenes, the clothes, 29th street is well done!

'A Trip To Bountiful" is a movie that has been done many times on the big screen. My favorite stars Cicely Tyson and not the movie made by Geraldine Page. Although Page won the Oscar for her effort, the older "Trip" captures the time period much better. The other benefit to the older "Bountiful" is how it captures the old South. The politeness of the family even when they argue is impressive and makes this movie, watch worthy.

Like in the book, the movie has an older lady wanting to go back home one more time before she dies (we never know if she is dying or not). The son who is the protagonist and his wife as antagonist is in between both mother and wife the entire movie. The mother, even though she is poor is content with her life; she is proud of her son and the family that she has raised. The wife faces being poor another way: she puts on airs and pretends that she is better off than she is,,, image is everything to her. Rather than have financial security, she would rather go get her hair done, play bridge, go to the soda shop.

When mother takes off for Bountiful, a town that is all but abandoned is when the movie gets interesting. Along the way she meets a young, polite woman who's husband is in the war. She is going to live with her mother until her husband comes back home. Both ride the bus for hours and talk about their hopes in life. Both are religious and quote scripture and sing hymns.

Like the book, "Bountiful" ends happily and is worth seeing. It is a classic!

I have not seen "North by Northwest" since my Senior year in college. Hitchcock who directs this masterpiece is one of the best directors of all time and he directs a beauty here. Carey Grant who stars as an advertising executive is spun into a wild brew of the underworld. Although the movie never states exactly what the criminals are up to, the story is great no-less.

Hitchcock movies always have splendid cinematography! North by Northwest may just have the best. The scenery at Mt Rushmore alone is worth the price of admission! Grant and Eva Marie Saint blend well and the story line on Saint is even better. The viewer judges her one way, then another and at the end of the film we are shocked to find out who she really is. In typical Hitchcock form, North by Northwest is twists and turns, great acting and superb direction!

3 movies: one a comedy in 29th st, one a drama in Trip Through Bountiful and the third, a suspense masterpiece in North by Northwest.

The play is based as much on video artistry as it is on the solo artist: Rafika Chawishe. Out of Ayos, the play can take place in pretty much anytime the earth has existed. As it is set in Greek times, the modern music and sound design (Manolis Manousakis) and video (Asteris Koutoulas) is earry at times; edgy and absorbing at other times.

Boundaries Festival, Sunderland, 2024

Sometimes, it’s the provincial towns where the fascinating stuff happens. Take Sunderland’s Boundaries Festival. In theory, assembling an international array of experimental music gurus in a northeastern city better known for footballing struggles and industrial heritage should be a non-starter. Easy to assume there’s no local audience, and nobody willing to travel to an unfashionable outpost regardless of who is on the bill.

Just saw Martin Scorsese's Beatles '64, up today on Disney+. It's everything you would expect from a master like Scorsese and his masterful 1978 The Last Waltz, but much more, given what the Beatles were and are to so many millions of people on this planet. As I began saying in the 1970s, that impact will last for thousands of years, right up there with Socrates and Shakespeare, even though at one point in the documentary, a young Paul scoffs at The Beatles having anything to do with "culture," preferring instead to say that what The Beatles are about are "laughs".

A Touch from the Abyss

“To forget would not only be dangerous but offensive; to forget the dead would be akin to killing them a second time.”— Elie Wiesel, preface to ‘Night’ (2006)

As if free-falling, the body plunged into darkness. Humid air dampened the skin, cooled the ground, and diffused an earthy scent. The wind’s symphonies sounded celestial from a distance, enchanting the listener into nocturnal woods. This ambience was characterised by “âm”, the form and expression of ‘And They Die a Natural Death’ (2022) by artist and filmmaker Nguyễn Trinh Thi. A homophone in the Vietnamese language, âm has different usages, some of which provide clues to understanding humanist concerns in this work.

In the Vietnamese language, the syllable âm denotes distinct meanings. As a Vietnamese observer, I realised an existing language barrier—artistically and linguistically—that poses a challenge in contextualising ‘And They Die a Natural Death’. By introducing the word âm, I attempt to illuminate foundational layers of Nguyễn Trinh Thi’s presence at documenta fifteen, which is arguably one of the most prominent global exhibitions.

Âm 音: sonic, sound

A site-specific art installation, ‘And They Die a Natural Death’ was a public intervention reviving Rondell—Kassel’s long-standing defensive tower built in 1523 and was said to later house torture facilities in its underground vaults. As part of the installation, a high-tech system recreated and implanted the natural environment of Tam Đảo forest in Vietnam. Via this hidden automated design, the Tam Đảo wind was generated in Rondell’s interior, and composed rhythms with the bamboo flutes in the dome. In this absolutely dark cinematic space, sound became the main device to storytelling.

Recently, Nguyễn Trinh Thi began to incorporate new media in her work, including organic materials and natural forces, prioritising the art of listening over mere representation. She experimented with sound as the primary technical apparatus. An ethnographic research trip to the Central Highlands of Vietnam in 2021 touched the artist so significantly that she dedicated her film to the J’rai culture of listening.2 ‘How to Improve the World’ (2021) is the documentary film that acts as a prelude to ‘And They Die a Natural Death’. By appropriating musician John Cage’s diary titled ‘How to Improve the World: You Will Only Make Matters Worse’ (1992), the filmmaker suggests that we should listen to the world around us to survive ecological crises together.3

Âm 荫: tree shade

The Tam Đảo wind not only created sounds inside Rondell, but also activated a lighting system to blow up silhouettes of bird’s eye chilli plants hidden underneath the platform. Enlarged shadows reached the highest parts of the dome, casting a luxuriant forest onto Rondell’s circular wall. Using small plants as main actors, the artist built an eco-theater in which non-human agency played a crucial role in the retelling of death. Chilli pepper shadows inside Rondell formed a panoramic ink painting, and this visual quality could be said to reference East Asian traditional art. In feudal China, the landscape genre seeks to express harmony between Heaven and Earth and cosmic wholeness between humans and nature, and this is observed with the installation.

Nguyễn Trinh Thi’s use of shadow as a visual signifier is not unlike American American artist Kara Walker’s signature strategy, which elicits the legacy of slavery through stereotypical--often grotesque--cut-paper silhouettes. Such technique aids the artists to walk the lines between pleasure and pain, visibility and invisibility, power and oppression.

Âm 喑: muteness

Like the other projects at documenta fifteen, Nguyễn Trinh Thi’s installation recalled a testimony denied by grand history. ‘And They Die a Natural Death’ was a mute cry for loss and brutality. The artist referenced a chapter in Bùi Ngọc Tấn’s memoir in prison, A Tale For 2000.4 In the labour camp, male prisoners longed for the spicy heat of chilli pepper. One day, the discovery of a vast pepper tree forest caused an uprising in the camp. Unable to control the mob, furious guards fired in the air and ended up shooting a prisoner. The mob went silent and returned to the camp; their hands still held on to the chilli peppers as if it represented fleeting freedom.

As a site-specific project, ‘And They Die a Natural Death’ connected to local history in Kassel. In the Nazi era, the city witnessed book burning, destruction of Jewish synagogue, concentration camps, and Adolf Hitler’s speech in the first Reich Warriors’ Convention. Within this context, the installation can be interpreted as a passive mourning. Its dim lights and eerie sounds gestured towards, in the words of philosopher Jacques Ranciere, “the representation of the inhuman.”5 This rhetorical device employs micro-description of actions, which highlights the absence of humanity experienced in prisoner camps from Bùi Ngọc Tấn’s memoir and Kassel’s Nazi past.

Âm 陰: the underworld

Nguyễn Trinh Thi is neither the first nor the only artist to adapt a ruin’s history in a retelling of memory. However, her philosophy, deeply rooted in Taoism, fostered aesthetic qualities that were peculiar to East Asian and Vietnamese worldviews. In 1987, German artist Rebecca Horn also addressed history by staging a site-specific installation ‘Concert in Reverse’ in a Munster fortification, which was built around the same time as Rondell. While both artists intrigued their audiences with cinematic experiences and sounds from ordinary tools, for Nguyễn Trinh Thi, darkness was crucial to the mise-en-scène of death. Such an artistic strategy inserted the Vietnamese spiritual belief that the dead are not far gone, and that their souls stay in the underworld. With its 10-metre-thick wall, humid air, and absolute absence of light, Rondell became a vessel, displacing viewers to enter a space outside of time. The haunting yet meditative ambience enchanted listeners to feel a tender touch from the abyss.

A story about death is a reminder that nature’s flow waits for no one. However, by narrating death, both storyteller and listener resist this flow and encounter the deceased in a parallel reality. This temporal convergence offers a space for grief, and in some cases, the telling of death helps to make sense of loss.

At documenta fifteen, Nguyễn Trinh Thi presented her ongoing investigation of anti-representation, nonhuman agency, and power. She conceived of  “landscapes as quiet witnesses to history.”7 ‘And They Die a Natural Death’ was a live theatre in which nonhuman actors--wind and chilli pepper plants--took centre stage. In this nonverbal retelling of death, artistic strategies were utilised to engage the viewer’s multiple senses. By imagining a gate to the underworld, the artist staged a landscape that connected Kassel and the Tam Đảo forest where the prisoner died a natural death.
