Lebanon-Israel Ceasefire: Forex Opportunities Hidden in the Middle East News Shifting the Forex Landscape with Underground Middle East News The Forex market is like a game of chess. Each piece you move can either secure your success or lead to checkmate. Today, we’re diving into a secret corner of the financial news that’s quietly shifting the chessboard: the Middle East. The recent geopolitical moves in this region might sound like a far-off concern, but understanding them is the key to staying ahead in the Forex game. And trust me, these moves are worth a lot more than pawns. But let's keep it real. The Middle East news isn’t just about ceasefires and diplomacy; it’s also about the small ripples that become tidal waves—waves that smart traders can surf for profit. We’re going to break this down, underground-style, and I promise: no eye-glazing jargon, just clear insights and humor sprinkled in for good measure. After all, trading doesn’t have to be boring. Lebanon and Israel: On the Verge of a Truce or Another Bluff? Hezbollah, Israel, ceasefire—sounds like the usual rollercoaster, right? Well, it’s a bit more like realizing you’ve got two left shoes after an online shopping spree. Confusing and not entirely useful at first glance, but let’s polish this up a little. For traders, what’s happening between Israel and Lebanon isn’t just political theater. It’s also a massive game of signaling. When Israeli officials hint at a ceasefire—“we’re on the cusp”—it’s like someone saying they might, just maybe, buy Bitcoin at $40,000. Markets love signals, and when the Middle East throws up signs of peace, currencies like the Lebanese Pound could dance to a new tune. This isn’t just about Israel, though. Forex trading relies on catching these shifts before the broader market sees them. Every hint of ceasefire might be a chance to take a position on the USD/ILS or even the Euro, as broader stability in the Middle East can lead to unexpected currency correlations. Remember—the market is about perception as much as it is about fact. Iran, Nuclear Talks, and the Mystery Dance Iran and nuclear negotiations are like the Groundhog Day of international politics. We hear they’re going to meet up—this time with the UK, France, and Germany. But the real question is, does it matter for Forex? The answer is, definitely. Think of the nuclear talks as the fuel gauge for geopolitical risk in the region. The lower the risk (i.e., diplomacy goes smoothly), the higher the appetite for emerging markets, which could mean strength for currencies from countries aligned with Iranian diplomacy—like the Turkish Lira. Conversely, a faltering Iran-Europe discussion could mean increased volatility, pushing investors back into the safety of the USD. Traders should focus on timing: when are these talks scheduled? Friday—mark it down. If headlines start turning sour before then, you may want to hedge, and if things take a positive turn, keep your eyes on regional emerging market pairs. Drone Attacks: A Buzz in Ashdod and What It Means for Oil Hezbollah took to the skies over Ashdod Naval Base—a buzzing drone attack that’s the first of its kind, making headlines worldwide. To the average reader, this is just more bad news. But for us, it’s a hidden gem. Drone strikes near naval bases are a very real signal of heightened conflict risk, especially in oil transportation routes. Oil prices react to even the slightest whiff of disruption. And if oil is moving, you can bet that oil-dependent currencies like the CAD (Canadian Dollar) will move too. This isn’t the stuff of conspiracy theories—it’s about being a step ahead. When there’s pressure in the Gulf or around Israel’s coastline, it’s time to look at oil futures, then make your move on the USD/CAD. Murder, Politics, and Forex: How Israel’s Latest Crisis Affects Market Moves Okay, real talk: the news about Israeli Rabbi Zvi Kogan being murdered in the UAE is tragic, and beyond the personal loss, it’s also setting off political shockwaves. Iran has denied involvement, but you know how these accusations go—it’s a back-and-forth game where both sides deny until they’re blue in the face. But here’s where things get interesting for Forex traders. Israel’s Prime Minister called the act a terrorist attack, vowing to take action. The market loves safety, and incidents like this drive traders into safe-haven currencies—which usually means a stronger USD or JPY. Pay attention to Israeli government announcements here. If the situation escalates, or tensions with Iran heighten, expect investors to pile into safer waters. That means buying dollars or yen while everyone else is figuring out the politics. Why You Should Care: Insights You Won’t Hear on Mainstream News All this might seem distant, but every geopolitical twist and turn means opportunity for those who know where to look. Here's the hidden pattern: while most traders focus on macro indicators and big economic data, smart Forex traders understand that politics and sentiment in regions like the Middle East move markets in subtle, powerful ways. This is your chance to trade the shadows—to take advantage of trends that most traders dismiss as "just news." Did you know that during previous conflicts, the Lebanese Pound experienced micro-surges due to changes in investor confidence based on nothing more than a handful of rumors about ceasefires? Imagine having the inside scoop on which way the market would turn—that's where the edge is. By keeping a close eye on the dance between Iran, Israel, and the rest of the Middle East, you could potentially position yourself ahead of big market moves. This isn’t the kind of insight that your run-of-the-mill trader will pick up on; it’s what makes the difference between profit and regret. Ready to Take the Leap? Advanced Methods for Complex Markets Sure, you could sit this out and wait for "more stable times," but guess what? There are no stable times in the Forex world—only opportunities we seize or miss. Understanding political tensions isn’t just about reading the news, it’s about analyzing where the market is going to react—and taking that leap before everyone else. And hey, if all of this seems overwhelming, you don’t have to do it alone. Dive into our Forex Education for exclusive strategies, or get in on our Community Membership for expert analysis and live trading insights. This isn’t just about knowing what to do; it’s about knowing when and how to do it with precision. —————– Image Credits: Cover image at the top is AI-generated Read the full article

In Praise of Army Surplus Shops
Army surplus shops are really something. Not only are they rammed full of dope military garb, but they’ve got a certain raw ’n’ raggedy flavour to ‘em which is missing from most places these days. Like the humble car boot sale or the British seaside town, they seemingly operate on their own axis, relatively untouched by the sanitised hand of modern life.
War-time wares are piled up all over the place… old sheepdogs snooze behind the counter… mysterious scents waft throughout… and amongst all this, the clothes look sick and will actually last for longer than five minutes.
Admittedly they can sometimes be a bit of a gamble, but it’s in that roll of the dice that lies the appeal. This isn’t lazily clicking the ‘add to basket’ button on some slick-looking website and then getting the garb delivered into your lap via drone the same afternoon. It’s an effort, and whether or not you even buy anything is besides the point… it’s an experience that you’ve got to earn. The ‘buying things’ aspect is just a small part of it.
From what I can gather, the blueprint for these fine establishments was first drawn up over the Atlantic after the Civil War. Up until then, most war gear was made in fairly short runs by each separate regiment… but with mass production added to the equation, military schmutter was churned out by the shedload. When the war was over, both sides had plenty of wares to spare, so they set about flogging it as a way to make back a bit of wedge. One of the big bidders was a 14 year old scrap-metal merchant called Francis Bannerman.
Francis sunk his sizeable scrap fortune into buying heavily-discounted surplus gear (guns included), and after a bit of shuffling up the ladder, bought a seven-story super-store in Manhattan to house it all. Aptly-titled ‘Bannerman’s Army & Navy Outfitters’, this shop attracted the attention of everyone from twiddle-tashed gentleman-explorer types to mercenary soldiers fighting in the Spanish Civil War, and at it’s height, needed a full island on the Hudson River, complete with custom-built castle, to store all its stock.
Bannerman’s eventually dwindled for various reasons (including constant explosions on its ‘surplus island’ caused by rusting artillery), and whilst it slowly faded away throughout the mid-20th century, it set the stage for countless other surplus shops to pop up in seemingly every small town around the globe.
From WW2 up until the Gulf War the constant stream of battle meant there was no short supply of hard-wearing clobber, and the growth of arduous leisure activities like camping, fishing and hiking meant that more people were after tough clothes that didn’t cost a fortune. And perhaps most importantly, unhinged small-town madheads who didn’t make it into the forces could now walk their Alsatian whilst draped in the clothing they dreamed about.
These days there are still a fair few of these wondrous establishments around, and whilst a few of them have been infiltrated by snide ‘military-esque’ gear seemingly designed for moody bouncers and paintball moshers, gems may still by found in the shape of old M-65s, ripstop BDU jackets or those US Army ECWCS Gore-Tex parkas (which cost a fraction of the price of usual GORE-approved garb).
As well as the yank stuff, also look out for Swedish military work pants, German cold-weather parkas, that wild Swiss Aplenflage gear and another other Euro anomalies (like the seldom-seen Irish ‘Paddyflage’).
Don’t hang about though—in the age of artificial intelligence and cyber warfare, less humanoid cannon-fodder is needed, and because swanky computers and high-flying drones don’t wear ripstop cotton, not as much gear is made in the first place. Obviously it goes without saying that the less people involved in combat the better… but still, this genuine surplus won’t last forever—snaffle it whilst you can and leave the real combat to the robots.

Trump Threatens to Send Federal Law Enforcement Forces to More Cities (NYT) President Trump plans to deploy federal law enforcement to Chicago and threatened on Monday to send agents to other major cities—all controlled by Democrats. Governors and other officials reacted angrily to the president’s move, calling it an election-year ploy as they squared off over crime, civil liberties and local control that has spread from Portland, Ore., across the country. With camouflage-clad agents already sweeping through the streets of Portland, more units were poised to head to Chicago, and Mr. Trump suggested that he would follow suit in New York, Philadelphia, Detroit and other urban centers. Governors and other officials compared his actions to authoritarianism and vowed to pursue legislation or lawsuits to stop him. “I’m going to do something—that, I can tell you,” Mr. Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “Because we’re not going to let New York and Chicago and Philadelphia and Detroit and Baltimore and all of these—Oakland is a mess. We’re not going to let this happen in our country. All run by liberal Democrats.”
Chicago restaurateur joins mission to feed America’s hungry (AP) Before coronavirus arrived, Manish Mallick’s trips to this city’s South Side had been limited to attending graduate classes at the University of Chicago. Now Mallick is a South Side regular—and a popular one. He regularly arrives bearing food for the hungry from his Indian restaurant several miles to the north, in the city’s downtown. “Thank you, sugar, for the meals. They’re so delicious!” one woman recently shouted to Mallick outside a South Side YWCA. “God bless you!” she added, raising her arms for emphasis. Mallick has personally delivered thousands of meals cooked and packed by his staff—among them, chickpea curry and tandoori chicken with roasted cottage cheese, sweet corn, peas and rice. Volunteers from neighborhood organizations then take them to children, retirees and the multitudes who’ve been laid off or sick during the pandemic. “We all need to help each other,” Mallick says. “That’s the best way to get through a crisis.”
American tourists are banned from the Bahamas as coronavirus cases spike (Washington Post) One of the few countries to welcome U.S. tourists has changed its mind, citing soaring infection numbers. The Bahamas will close its borders to most visitors from the United States starting Wednesday, Prime Minister Hubert Minnis said Sunday. While commercial flights from Canada, Britain and the European Union will still be allowed to land, all visitors must show proof that they tested negative for the coronavirus at an accredited lab in the past 10 days. Other international flights will be banned.
More and more countries are making masks mandatory (Washington Post) As countries around the world reopen their economies amid ongoing novel coronavirus outbreaks, governments are increasingly embracing what remains in some places a divisive public health measure: mandatory masks. In France, face coverings will be required in all public enclosed spaces as of Monday. England is set to begin enforcing new rules that make masks mandatory inside supermarkets and other shops, effective Friday. In the U.S., there is no national mask requirement. But at the state level, a growing number of mask requirements have come into force.
EU agrees on $2.1 trillion deal after marathon summit (AP) After four days and nights of wrangling, exhausted European Union leaders finally clinched a deal on an unprecedented 1.8 trillion-euro ($2.1 trillion) budget and coronavirus recovery fund early Tuesday, after one of their longest summits ever. The 27 leaders grudgingly committed to a costly, massive aid package for those hit hardest by COVID-19, which has already killed 135,000 people within the bloc alone. “Extraordinary events, and this is the pandemic that has reached us all, also require extraordinary new methods,” German Chancellor Angela Merkel said. To confront the biggest recession in its history, the EU will establish a 750 billion-euro coronavirus fund, partly based on common borrowing, to be sent as loans and grants to the hardest-hit countries. That is in addition to the agreement on the seven-year, 1 trillion-euro EU budget that leaders had been haggling over for months even before the pandemic. “The consequences will be historic,” French President Emmanuel Macron said. “We have created a possibility of taking up loans together, of setting up a recovery fund in the spirit of solidarity,” a sense of sharing debt that would have been unthinkable not so long ago.
Breached levees trap thousands as flooding in China worsens (AP) Breached levees have trapped more than 10,000 people in an eastern Chinese town as flooding worsens across much of the country, local authorities said Tuesday. High waters overcame flood defenses protecting Guzhen, a town in Anhui province, on Sunday, the provincial government said on its official microblog. Flood waters rose as high as 3 meters (10 feet), the official Xinhua News Agency quoted Wang Qingjun, Guzhen’s Communist Party secretary, as saying. About 1,500 firefighters were rushed to carry out rescues in the province, where weeks of heavy rains have disrupted the lives of more than 3 million people, Xinhua said.
Britain suspends extradition treaty with Hong Kong (NYT) Britain on Monday suspended its extradition treaty with Hong Kong amid worries about a new national security law that Beijing imposed on the former British colony. The suspension comes as London and Beijing find themselves at increasing odds over a variety of issues, including Britain’s move to bar Chinese tech giant Huawei from its 5G wireless networks and growing public anger in Britain over the treatment of the Uighur minority in Xinjiang, an autonomous territory in China.
Japan helps 87 companies to ‘exit China’ after pandemic exposed overreliance (Washington Post) Japan is paying 87 companies to shift production back home or into Southeast Asia after the novel coronavirus pandemic disrupted supply chains and exposed an overreliance on Chinese manufacturing. Alarm bells started ringing in Japanese boardrooms as soon as the virus emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan, a major hub of the auto parts industry. Japanese automaker Nissan was forced to temporarily halt production at a plant in Japan in February over shortages of parts from China, while a Japanese consumer goods company, Iris Ohyama, found itself unable to meet surging local demand for masks after supplies to its factory in China were disrupted and export controls out of China were tightened. In March, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the government wanted to bring production back home and diversify into Southeast Asia. The following month, the government set aside $2.2 billion in its coronavirus economic recovery package to subsidize that process. China is Japan’s largest trading partner, but Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has been trying for several years to reduce the country’s dependence on its giant neighbor. The 2008 global financial crisis, the 2011 northeastern Japan earthquake and the coronavirus pandemic all disrupted supply chains, while U.S.-China trade tensions are also a factor.
Jordan to reopen airports to tourists in August (AP) The Jordanian government says it will begin reopening airports to international travelers in August after sealing its borders in March to help halt the spread of the coronavirus. Travelers from a list of approved, low-risk countries must pass a coronavirus test at least 72 hours before departure and will get a second test upon arrival in Jordan, Transportation Minister Khaled Saif says. Jordan will require incoming tourists to download Aman, the government’s contact-tracing mobile application, for the duration of their stay in the country.
Swapping the stage for a deli: Israel underemployment rises (AP) A year ago, Cijay Brightman was doing sound and lighting for a Madonna performance in Israel. Now, after the coronavirus wiped out live events, he’s making sandwiches, slicing cheese and serving customers at a Tel Aviv deli. Brightman spent the last 15 years perfecting his craft and doing what he loves as a stage technician. But in the wake of the pandemic, he has been forced to abandon his passion and profession—like thousands of others in Israel—and find any job that will pay the bills. Underemployment is plaguing workers around the world. Although there are no global statistics yet, the phenomenon is expected to grow as the economic crisis around the world deepens, said economist Roger Gomis of the International Labor Organization.
King Salman hospitalized (Foreign Policy) Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz has been admitted to hospital with gallbladder problems, state media reported on Monday. The 84-year-old monarch is the second aging Gulf leader to seek medical attention recently, after 91-year-old Kuwaiti ruler Emir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah underwent surgery on Sunday for an as yet unnamed ailment.
Uganda’s Museveni seeks re-election to extend rule to four decades (Reuters) Uganda’s long-serving President Yoweri Museveni has collected papers to seek nomination as the ruling party’s candidate in next year’s presidential election, the party said on Tuesday. Securing a new term would potentially extend the 75-year-old former rebel fighter’s rule to four decades. Though no date has yet been fixed for the 2021 vote, it is typically held in February. The strongest opposition presidential aspirant is pop star and lawmaker Bobi Wine, 38, whose music endears him to the young. In power since 1986, Museveni’s tenure is only surpassed in Africa by Equatorial Guinea’s Teodoro Obiang, who has ruled since 1979 and Cameroon’s Paul Biya, who has ruled since 1982.

Market Talk - September 6, 2022
ASIA: India’s dominant services industry grew faster than expected in August thanks to a solid expansion in demand and a continued easing in cost pressures, encouraging firms to hire at the quickest pace in more than 14 years, a private survey showed. Driven by strong growth in services and manufacturing activity, Asia’s third-largest economy expanded at its fastest annual pace in a year during the April-to-June quarter. India’s minister of petroleum and natural gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, said most of his country’s crude oil supplies in the near future will come from the Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia and Iraq, as it seeks a secure and affordable energy base. Crude oil imports from Saudi Arabia by the world’s third biggest oil importer and consumer rose in July by more than 25% after Saudi Arabia lowered the official selling price in June and July compared with May. Saudi Arabia stayed at the No. 3 spot among India’s suppliers. India’s imports from Russian oil rose by 4.7 times, or more than 400,000 barrels per day, in April-May, but fell in July. Japan’s household spending grew for a second straight month in July despite a resurgence in COVID-19 cases, but inflationary pressures from the yen’s slump to a 24-year-low have cast doubt over a revival in consumption. From falling real wages to shrinking service sector activity, data this week has shown private consumption stalling, undermining some of the gains made in April-June. Household spending rose 3.4% in July from a year earlier, government data showed on Tuesday. Compared with a month earlier, spending decreased 1.4% in July, bigger than the forecast 0.6% fall. The month-on-month spending drop could be because consumers felt less confident visiting shops due to rising coronavirus cases, a government official told reporters. Siemens Energy in May announced a 4.05 billion euro deal to buy the remaining third in Siemens Gamesa it does not already own, hoping it can get a better handle on operational problems at the division that way. Outstanding notes will be converted into Siemens Energy shares at maturity on Sept. 14, 2025, and will have a maximum conversion premium of 15-20% above the reference price and a coupon of 5.125-5.625% per year, the company said. Liz Truss will become Britain’s next prime minister with the economy on the brink of recession, according to data that showed private sector activity fell last month as businesses battled rising costs. The latest picture from S&P Global and the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (Cips) revealed a “significant and accelerated” decline in manufacturing in August, along with weaker activity in the UK’s dominant services sector. Cost pressures facing businesses remained at extremely high levels amid rising energy and fuel prices as Russia’s war in Ukraine further pushes up costs in the wholesale market, according to a monthly health check from S&P Global and Cips. Unlike households, businesses do not benefit from the energy price cap. The monthly S&P/Cips PMI fell to 49.6 in August from 52.1 in July. CVS Health acquired Signify in an $8 billion deal at $30.50 per share in cash. CVS Health CEO Karen Lynch said in a statement said that it will “strengthen ability to expand and develop new product offerings in a multi-payor approach.” Signify offers services in 50 states and provides both virtual and in-person health services to 2.5 million people. Executive Chef Stefano Marzetti and Food and Beverage Director Luca Costanzi run the show here and what a delightful show it is. Their impressive wine cellar boasts a never-ending selection of Italian and international labels (over 700 to be exact) and the refined menu with gourmet touches will delight even the fussiest of fine diners. In addition to the a la carte menu, there are three tasting menus to choose from, including Rome’s current complete gluten-free degustation consisting of 5 delectable courses. The classic decor with the live piano gives it an olde world cabaret feel. One thing’s for sure: the meal, the staff and lively atmosphere will more than impress. The view will leave you speechless. Metro: Barberini.

Coincidently, Domenico Stile’s surname means ‘style’ in English. And it couldn’t be a more appropriate description for the service, cuisine and location of Enoteca La Torre. This fine-dining establishment is housed within the elegant Villa Laetitia – a property owned by the Fendi family, of international fashion house fame. Again, a fitting location for Stile’s philosophy because the stunning Art Deco interiors, particularly the floor-to-ceiling glass arched doorways that look out on to the property gardens, are as impressive and refined as his plates. Born in the Gulf of Naples, he began his career at age 15 and it has taken him across Italy and even as far as Chicago. In Italy, he learned from the best having worked with Antonio Cannavacciuolo, Enrico Crippa and Massimo Bottura – to drop just a few names. He and his brigade have managed the kitchen here since 2016 and at 30, is of the youngest chefs in Rome to have a coveted star in the Michelin Guide. He is accompanied by talented sommelier Rudy TravagIi who impeccably leads the wonderful service team. The dishes here provide the perfect balance between Stile’s technical capabilities and his passion for innovation and outstanding produce. His amuse bouche can include anything from toasted pasta parcels filled with carbonara to a play on the Ferrero Rocher with hazelnut-encrusted blue veined buffalo cheese balls. Highlights on the entree and first course list include tuna tartare with beetroot, Greek yoghurt and a roasted rabe broth; red shrimp with cardamom, stracciatella cheese, caviar, citrus essence and mint croquettes; pasta filled with ‘coda alla vaccinara’ (Roman-style braised oxtail); amatriciana semolina rice with a smoked squid twist; and a divine risotto infused with lemons from Amalfi. Take your pick for second courses with one of the standouts being the flame-grilled duck with coriander, offal croquettes, fennel chutney and blood orange. Like all the perfectly presented dishes, desserts are a treat for all the senses, particularly the adventurous meringue and biscuit crumble with wasabi sorbet. Outside the a-la-carte menu, there are two (blind) tasting degustations to choose from 5 courses at E95 or 7 at E130 (excluding beverages). Closed Sunday and Monday at lunch.
Recommended for Romantic Dining because: Stunning art deco details with outstanding elegant dishes to match.
Maria’s expert tip: The evening is special, but a daytime visit with light filtering the gorgeous glass doors won’t disappoint.

If a change really is as good as a holiday, it looks like this guy has had ten of them! One of Rome’s most prominent and talented chefs (Michelin stars and various awards under his belt) caused an uproar in early 2019 when news of him leaving the historic Hotel Hassler was no less shocking for the Roman food world than what would have been, say had John Lennon left the Beatles at the height of their fame! Francesco Apreda made the controversial move after more than a decade and so Idylio was born. Set within the five-star luxurious design Pantheon Iconic Rome Hotel, the philosophy here is rebirth and it can truly be felt. The menu is devised by three distinct tasting menus (6, 7 and 8 courses, 120, 140, 160 euro respectively) and each dish can be ordered individually as you choose. Highlights include the panko-crumbed scallop with black truffle and a surprise buffalo mozzarella center, Apreda’s takes on the roman classics ‘Pollo ai Peperoni’ (his is slow-cooked for 4 days) and ‘Aglio, Olio e Peperoncino’ (this version is served with angel hair pasta and topped with smoked eel), and a delectable, sensory journey with a four-way prepared foie gras. As always, Apreda’s travels through Japan and India and his Neapolitan heritage can be savored throughout the menu. Apreda is supported in the state-of-the-art kitchen by the talented head chef Francesco Focaccia, sous chef Luca Caporilli and pastry chef Edvige Simoncelli. Around 600 labels make the wine list with more to come and the impeccable dining floor service led by Alessandro D’Andrea makes you feel right at home, a rarity in many fine dining establishments. Open for dinner Tuesday to Saturday. Bookings can be made online. Tram: 8, 3.
Recommended for Romantic Dining because: Cozy up for great food and cocktails with a side of jazz!
Maria’s expert tip: Bookings are a must and can be made online. Head over early in the warmer months to have a drink on the Divinity rooftop terrace.

Young Roman chefs who take a risk with the drive to open their own restaurant in this current Italian economy must be applauded. And Antonio Ziantoni is the latest to venture out on his own after stints in some very reputable dining establishments. For four years he worked with Anthony Genovese of Rome’s two-Michelin starred Il Pagliaccio and even with England’s Gordon Ramsey. He chose Trastevere – a neighborhood in need of dining evolution – and his could very well be the Rome restaurant opening of the year. His stellar curriculum and talent will certainly stand him in good stead. The interiors and fit out at Zia are an ode to those all too familiar Scandinavian lines infiltrating the city but with Made in Italy design touches, Ziantoni and co. have truly made it their own. With less than 30 covers, it’s an intimate space and away from the more crowded zones of the quartiere. The menu will attract a crowd looking for quality and innovation on the plate, but the prices are extremely reasonable for Trastevere and for the refined technique you find on the plate. There are 5 entrees,5 first course and 5 main courses to choose from as well as a 5-course tasting menu (55 euro) and a 3-course lunch menu (30 euro). The menu will change each season and some of the current highlights include lamb sweetbreads with mozzarella and tomato; a delectable pulled pork salad; panzerotti with smoked cockerel; and a most tender lamb and mustard dish. And when it comes to dessert, Christian Marasca’s delights don’t disappoint, especially the spectacular Tourbillon. If innovative fine dining is what you’re after in Rome but you don’t want to break the bank, Zia certainly won’t disappoint. TRAM: 3 8. BUS: 75, H.
Recommended for Romantic Dining because: Fine dining without being stuffy, Zia is perfect for a special romantic outing.
Maria’s expert tip: Let the chef treat you to a degustation that you won’t soon forget.

Sleek and chic. If Retrobottega was one of Rome’s hottest addresses for contemporary dining before, its recent restyle has sure taken it up a notch. Located right in the heart of the city, between Piazza Navona and the Pantheon, there are only 26 seats at this modern eatery so you’ll have to book to get a seat. The venue has two dining spaces that are centered around the open kitchen so not only do you get to taste Giuseppe Lo Iudice and Alessandro Miocchi’s creations, you see their artistic preparation unfold right before your eyes. These young and experienced chefs (they count brands and names like Bulgari, Anthony Genovese, Il Pagliaccio and Enrico Crippa between them) are all about refined, seasonal dishes in a convivial, minimalist setting. Walking in off those off those old cobblestoned streets is a contrast from old and new and the design features and lighting stand out right away – here, your cutlery is built into the specially designed high top tables which always make for a great conversation starter! You can choose to dine from the menu or a 5-course degustation (where you select two starters, a first and second course and dessert) for 50 euro. The menu changes frequently but think squid and wild boar tartare for entree and first courses like blueberry and veal shank risotto or sea eel and fennel tortellini. On the main course list, you’ll find anything from cuttlefish to pork to pigeon. Dessert is a decadent affair too with an almond, licorice and raisin delight or heartwarming chocolate and salted caramel treat. The wine list is extensive and the staff is super knowledgeable and friendly. Open daily for lunch and dinner. BUS: 64, 70, 85.
Recommended for Romantic Dining because: Classy, fun and contemporary dining in Rome doesn’t get much better than this.
Maria’s expert tip: Look for your cutlery in a cute drawer built into the custom design tables.

Rome’s Ristorante All’Oro has a new home and a stylish one at that! Chef Riccardo di Giacinto and his partner Ramona Anello have just unveiled their 5-star boutique hotel The H’all Tailor Suite and All’Oro (not new to Rome, formerly in Via del Vantaggio) sit like a jewel in her crown. This is not your average hotel restaurant but in a sense, a fine dining restaurant with hotel rooms. Riccardo and Ramona have thought of every particular detail to make you feel as though you’re dining at their place! The restaurant is fitted with plush and luxury colorful interiors and everything from the charcoal fabric covered tables to purple velvet sofa seats are designed with client comfort in mind. The menu brings the same fun and spunk to their age-old signature dishes with a few new ones on the list. Some of the standout dishes included the potato and salt cod tiramisu; a deconstructed carbonara cream in an eggshell; mascarpone ravioli with duck ragu and red wine reduction; and the cheeky take on the old Roman classic, a ball of coda alla vaccinara (slowly braised oxtail) that resembles the Ferrero Rocher chocolate. The fun doesn’t end after dinner with a mirror prop arriving at your table for a Snow White ‘mirror mirror’ moment complete with small apple delights to cleanse the palate. All’Oro is a gastronomic journey that surprises and makes you smile at every turn.

what began as a hole-in-the-wall in Trastevere, Pianostrada Laboratorio di Cucina has slowly and quietly evolved into a Roman institution. It’s one of the hottest addresses in town and brings together high quality ingredients, contemporary style and service with a smile. You can take a seat on one of the open kitchen bar stools, in the eclectic main dining area or in their pretty, fairylight filled garden. Start off with their homebaked focaccia (the one topped with prosciutto, basil and fig jam never disappoints) and then opt for one of the fresh daily past specials or a the classic, baccaburger – squid ink bun and a delectable salt cod and zucchini flower filling. The ever changing desserts are also an event. The place is packed at both lunch and dinner, so bookings are recommended. TRAM: 8

Economic news:
US: The dollar loitered around multi-week lows on Monday in the wake of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell laying out a slower-than-expected path to rate hikes, as traders’ focus shifted to U.S. jobs figures due on Friday for clues on a tapering timeline.
A storm lashing oilfield in the Gulf of Mexico also lent support to crude prices and to oil-exposed currencies, helping the Norwegian crown drift to a seven-week peak.
The euro touched its highest since early August during Asia trade, at $1.1810, and the yen rose to its strongest since last Wednesday at 109.70 per dollar.
A holiday in Britain on Monday was expected to limit further moves in the London session.
The greenback has fallen since Powell said on Friday that tapering could begin this year but that it wouldn’t directly signal higher rates, as hiking would need the economy to pass a substantially more stringent test.
Eurozone: French consumers were only marginally less confident about their economic prospects in August despite a surge in coronavirus cases and new rules requiring a health pass to enter many retail outlets, a monthly survey showed on Friday.
The INSEE official statistics agency said its monthly consumer confidence index fell to 99 from 100 in July, just short of the average expectation for 100 in a Reuters poll of 10 economists.
The index had peaked at 102 in June – the highest since the pandemic started – as vaccination rates picked up and coronavirus restrictions were eased.
But with France now facing its fourth coronavirus wave as the Delta variant spreads, the government began requiring people earlier this month to show proof of vaccination to enter cafes, restaurants, trains and big shopping malls.

Why Rising U.S. Consumer Prices Could Mislead: Live Updates Here’s what you need to know: The latest Consumer Price Index is expected to show a jump in inflation, but central bankers say the price pressures are likely to be temporary.Credit…Andrew Spear for The New York Times Consumer prices are expected to jump sharply in April data that will be released on Wednesday, a move resulting mainly from a technical quirk — but one that investors will be watching carefully as they try to determine if inflation could alter Federal Reserve policy. The Consumer Price Index probably climbed by 3.6 percent in the year through April, economists surveyed by Bloomberg expect. The increase in prices from March to April is expected to be more muted, at 0.2 percent. The Labor Department will release the figures at 8:30 a.m. The annual jump would be the fastest increase since 2011, and a sign that prices are shooting higher as inflation figures lap extremely weak readings from 2020 and, to a lesser extent, as supply chain disruptions begin to bite and demand climbs. Central bankers think the jump in prices will be short-lived, and have made it clear that they plan to look past a temporary increase when setting policy. The technical quirks at work in April will last only a few months, officials point out, and while it is less clear when shortages will be resolved, they are expected to eventually work their way through the system as businesses ramp up production to meet demand. But the concern on Wall Street, and among some economists, is that the fast recovering economy, huge stimulus efforts from Washington and pent-up demand from consumers could mean that price gains are more pronounced or sustained than the Fed can tolerate. April 2021 forecast: +3.6% Percent change in Consumer Price Index from a year ago Some of April’s expected jump can be explained through what’s known as base effects — prices fell significantly last spring, so the increase now from the year prior is larger, even if prices are not rising as dramatically. 2021 Consumer Price Index April 2021 forecast: +3.6% Percent change in Consumer Price Index from a year ago Some of April’s expected jump can be explained through what’s known as base effects — prices fell significantly last spring, so the increase now from the year prior is larger, even if prices are not rising as dramatically. 2021 Consumer Price Index A key part of the central bank’s role is to keep price increases contained, so a steep acceleration in prices that is expected to last might prompt it to dial back policies that keep money cheap and credit flowing. Reducing the support would probably cause stock prices to sink. While the Fed defines its inflation target using a separate measure, the Personal Consumption Expenditure index, that metric relies on data from the C.P.I. and is also expected to move above the central bank’s goal. Fed officials aim for 2 percent annual inflation on average. Central bankers have been clear that they would react if, contrary to their expectations, signs of a persistent price takeoff emerged. But they have also said they want to avoid withdrawing support from the economy early, which could leave the labor market incompletely healed and put longer-run inflation at risk of returning to uncomfortably low levels, where they have been mired for much of the past decade. Lael Brainard, a Fed governor, said during a speech on Tuesday that “remaining patient through the transitory surge associated with reopening will help ensure” the economic momentum to “reach our goals.” SoftBank reported a net profit of more than $36 billion for the year ending in March.Credit…Philip Fong/Agence France-Presse — Getty Images The comeback continued for SoftBank on Wednesday, as the Japanese technology investment firm posted a net profit of more than $36 billion for the year ending in March. Yet a recent slide in confidence in technology stocks could make it more difficult for Masayoshi Son, the founder of the technology conglomerate turned investment powerhouse, to keep up the momentum after what seemed like an impossible change of fortune. Last May, SoftBank was in crisis after posting a loss of more than $12 billion. Its big bets on Wall Street favorites, like WeWork, the troubled office space company, and Uber, resulted in huge losses. But it was not down for long. Riding high on a post-pandemic stock boom, SoftBank has since notched seemingly unthinkable gains. When compared with its previously released figures, the year-end results implied a profit for the first three months of 2021 alone of more than $17 billion. In a live-streamed press event Wednesday, Mr. Son opened by showing a photo of the humble town where SoftBank began, before calling the huge earnings numbers “lucky plus lucky plus lucky.” Mr. Son told investors on Wednesday that he would not deny that he is a gambler. But he said he regretted some decisions. The question now is whether his current run of luck can continue. SoftBank’s profit, mostly paper gains from increases in investment values, was based heavily on a jump in the price of South Korean e-commerce firm Coupang after it listed earlier this year. Results were also lifted by strong share price rises from other SoftBank investments, DoorDash and Uber. The share price of all three companies has fallen sharply over the past month on a broader pullback in technology shares, in part related to fears over inflation out of the United States. Investors appeared more interested in the broader tech sell off than Mr. Son’s luck, as SoftBank’s shares fell more than 3 percent on Wednesday, despite the solid gains. With the Colonial Pipeline, a vital fuel pipeline stretching from Texas to New Jersey, shut down after a ransomware attack, airlines, consumers and state leaders are responding as gas prices rise in part of the country. Industry analysts said the impact of the shutdown would remain relatively minor as long as the artery was fully restored soon, but drivers scrambled to fuel their vehicles at filling stations across the Southeast on Tuesday in a panic-buying spree that left thousands of outlets out of gasoline. Gasoline in Georgia and a few other states rose 3 to 10 cents a gallon on Tuesday, a price jump typically seen only when hurricanes interrupt Gulf of Mexico refinery and pipeline operations A gallon of gas increased an average of nearly 7 cents in South Carolina and 6 cents in North Carolina on Tuesday, while gas in Virginia rose about 3 cents a gallon. Filling stations in Southern states were selling two to three times their normal amount of gasoline on Tuesday, according to the Oil Price Information Service, an organization that tracks the oil sector. Some stations are running out of fuel while others are limiting purchases to 10 gallons. Gov. Brian Kemp of Georgia signed an executive order suspending his state’s gasoline tax through Saturday, which amounts to roughly 20 cents a gallon. Gov. Roy Cooper of North Carolina and Gov. Ralph Northam of Virginia each declared a state of emergency in an effort to suspend some fuel transport rules. American Airlines said it had added stops to two daily flights out of Charlotte, N.C. One, to Honolulu, will stop in Dallas, where customers will change planes. The other, to London, will stop in Boston to refuel. The flights are expected to return to their original schedules on Saturday. Southwest Airlines said it was flying in supplemental fuel to Nashville, and United Airlines said it was flying extra fuel to Baltimore; Nashville; Savannah, Ga.; and Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport in South Carolina. Shopping for books in Barcelona last month. Spain’s economy, hit hard during the pandemic, is expected to grow nearly 6 percent this year.Credit…Pau Barrena/Agence France-Presse — Getty Images The economic outlook has brightened considerably across Europe after lockdowns restricted growth at the start of the year. Now, economists can foresee the complete recovery by the end of next year from the early effects of the pandemic. The British economy grew 2.1 percent in March from the previous month, the Office for National Statistics said on Wednesday. The reopening of schools was one of the biggest reasons for the larger-than-expected jump in economic growth, as well as a rise in retail spending even though many stores remained closed because of lockdowns. The statistics agency estimated that gross domestic product fell 1.5 percent in the first quarter, slightly less than economists surveyed by Bloomberg had predicted, while the country was under lockdown with nonessential stores, restaurants and other services such as hairdressers shut. Though the British economy is still nearly 9 percent smaller than it was at the end of 2019, before the pandemic, the Bank of England forecasts it to return to that size by the end of this year. The European Commission also upgraded its forecasts for the region on Wednesday. It predicted the European Union economies would grow 4.2 percent this year, up from a forecast of 3.7 percent three months ago. Germany’s economy is forecast to grow 3.4 percent this year and Spain, which suffered Europe’s deepest recession last year, is expected to grow nearly 6 percent. “The E.U. and euro area economies are expected to rebound strongly as vaccination rates increase and restrictions are eased,” the commission, the executive arm for the European Union, said on Wednesday. The recovery will be driven by household spending, investment, and a rising demand for European exports, it said. Still, despite the optimistic outlook, the commission warned that the risks were “high and will remain so as long as the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic hangs over the economy.” Even as millions of people were vaccinated, the number of new coronavirus cases globally reached a peak in late April as the pandemic has struck especially hard in India. The uneven distribution of vaccines around the world and the emergence of new variants has the potential to set back the recovery. The National Institute Of Economic and Social Research in London said on Monday that it did not expect the British economy to return to its prepandemic size until the end of 2022, predicting a slower recovery than the central bank. Economists at the institute expect lower global growth because of uncertainty about the global vaccine rollout and lingering doubts about the end of the pandemic inducing more people to hold onto their savings, rather than spend it. The electric Endurance pickup truck made by Lordstown Motors. An investment firm claimed the company had inflated the number of orders for its pickup trucks.Credit…Tony Dejak/Associated Press Lordstown Motors is one of a dozen electric vehicle start-ups that have wowed investors with big plans to revolutionize the auto industry. But in February, a prototype it was testing in Michigan caught fire. Then, in April, another prototype dropped out of a 280-mile off-road race in Baja California after just 40 miles. Lordstown is also being investigated by the Securities and Exchange Commission, and its stock has tumbled from a high of about $30 last year to less than $8. The swift rise and stunning decline of Lordstown are emblematic of the recent mania for E.V. businesses that are far from making a product, let alone selling it, Neal E. Boudette and Matthew Goldstein report for The New York Times. That frenzy has been driven by investors looking for the next Tesla, a pioneer in the industry that has a strong sales lead over other electric-car makers. But Lordstown seems far from achieving its goal of churning out electric pickup trucks starting in September and becoming a challenger to G.M. and Ford Motor. It’s not alone. Shares of Nikola, which is developing heavy trucks, have fallen from around $65 to about $11, for example. The S.E.C. is looking into allegations by an investment firm that Nikola made false statements about its technology. Buying protective face masks following a small outbreak of coronavirus disease in Taipei, Taiwan, on Wednesday.Credit…Ann Wang/Reuters Growing concerns in Taiwan about a small but worsening coronavirus outbreak drove a sharp intraday plunge in its stock market on Wednesday, as investors worried about new government restrictions on businesses in a place that has largely escaped the pandemic. On Wednesday morning, Taiwan’s health minister, Chen Shih-chung, said that the island’s new outbreak has reached a “very severe stage” and that restrictions could be upgraded in “the coming days.” He spoke after the government reported 16 new cases of local infection on Wednesday and seven on Tuesday. The Taiwan Stock Exchange weighted index slumped as much as 8.6 percent intraday following the news, a nearly 13 percent loss from its April peak. The market regained some ground later in the day and finished down 4.1 percent. Taiwan has been a rare success story in a pandemic-stricken world. The island democracy threw up its borders when the pandemic first began to spread from mainland China and has heavily limited travel. It has recorded only 1,210 total cases, according to a tally by The New York Times. But the authorities haven’t been able to trace the handful of cases that have popped up in recent days, raising questions about whether the government will limit the number of people who can gather within restaurants or other businesses. Taiwan instituted some Covid-related restrictions on Tuesday, the first in a long time. It suspended large events, limiting outdoor gatherings to 500 people and indoor gatherings to 100 people. On Wednesday morning, the health minister said that the restrictions might be stiffened within days. Source link Orbem News #Consumer #Live #Mislead #Prices #rising #Updates

Social distancing could last months, White House coronavirus coordinator says (Washington Post) Some form of social distancing will probably remain in place through the summer, Deborah Birx, the White House’s coronavirus task force coordinator, said Sunday—the same day several governors expressed optimism about the course of the virus and outlined their plans for a piecemeal reopening of their economies. After weeks of being told to simply stay home to halt the spread of the virus, individuals and business owners are now facing more complex decisions about how to proceed. In places where restaurant dining rooms are reopening, is it safe to go? Is it a good idea to return to the hair salon for a much-needed trim? And for business owners facing a litany of new guidelines about how to reopen without endangering their workers or customers, are the risks worth it?
Las Vegas and the jobs crisis (NYT) As the bottom fell out of the American economy, few places were hit harder than Las Vegas, where a full one-third of the local economy is in the leisure and hospitality industry, more than in any other major metropolitan area in the country. Most of those jobs cannot be done from home. Nearly 350,000 people in Nevada have filed for unemployment benefits since the crisis began, the highest number in the history of the state. Applied Analysis, a Las Vegas-based economic research firm, estimates the city’s current jobless rate to be about 25 percent—nearly double what it was during the Great Recession—and rising. “From an analytical standpoint, this is unprecedented,” said Jeremy Aguero, a principal analyst with the firm. “We have no frame of reference for what we are seeing.” Before the crisis, Nevada’s economy was one of the fastest growing in the country. Then, practically overnight, the glittering Vegas strip shut down, throwing thousands of waiters, bartenders, hotel cleaners and casino workers out of work, often without severance or benefits, and leaving the most bustling and storied stretch of the state’s economy boarded up and empty.
Bolsonaro Pulls Back Justice Minister Pick as Critics Cry Foul (Foreign Policy) Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has postponed the appointment of a new justice minister after numerous news reports suggested Bolsonaro loyalist Jorge Oliveira would be the favorite for the role. The decision follows an explosive few days at the top of Brazilian politics as allegations of presidential corruption mount and public confidence in Bolsonaro’s handling of the country’s coronavirus epidemic crumbles. The latest episode began on Friday with the abrupt resignation of Justice Minister Sergio Moro, after Bolsonaro had fired the head of Brazil’s equivalent to the FBI, Maurício Valeixo. In his resignation press conference, Moro alleged Bolsonaro had fired Valeixo for personal and political reasons relating to ongoing federal investigations into Bolsonaro’s children. Immediately following Moro’s remarks, Brazil’s chief prosecutor asked the Supreme Court to authorize an investigation of Moro’s accusations against Bolsonaro. Writing in FP last week, Eduardo Mello observed that Brazilian lawmakers will be loath to remove Bolsonaro if that risks empowering Vice President Hamilton Mourão, a retired four-star general. “While most in Congress know that Bolsonaro’s populist rhetoric is a threat to them, they also think that having a general with no links to the country’s political power brokers is a bigger risk at the moment,” he wrote.
Chile plans coronavirus certificates (Foreign Policy) Chile is moving forward with a plan to issue “release certificates” to those who have recovered from the coronavirus. The plan, according to Chile’s top health official, Jaime Manalich, would mean holders would be “freed from all types of quarantine or restriction, specifically because they can help their communities enormously since they pose no risk.”
Virus spreads fear through Latin America’s unruly prisons (AP) The spreading specter of the new coronavirus is shaking Latin America’s notoriously overcrowded, unruly prisons, threatening to turn them into an inferno. The Puente Alto prison in downtown Santiago, Chile, had the largest of Latin America’s largest prison virus outbreaks so far, with more than 300 reported cases. The prison’s 1,100 inmates are terrified. Social distancing is hard to practice in jail. Latin America’s prisons hold 1.5 million inmates, and the facilities are often quasi-ruled by prisoners themselves because of corruption, intimidation and inadequate guard staffs. Low budgets also create ideal conditions for the virus to spread: There is often little soap and water and cell blocks are crowded.
As Europe confronts coronavirus, the media faces a trust test (Nieman Reports) By and large, European COVID-19 coverage is not increasing the public’s trust in the media. In an Edelman survey, journalists were the least trusted information source on the coronavirus, falling behind politicians and healthcare CEOs. This response follows five years of declining trust in the European Union’s media, and in some countries, the numbers are quite stark. About a week into Italy’s COVID-19 lockdown, a TradeLab study found that only 16 percent of those surveyed believed news on the pandemic was balanced and transparent.
Dutch teens sail across Atlantic after becoming stranded in Caribbean (Washington Post) When the global pandemic made air travel impossible, a group of Dutch high school students stranded in the Caribbean got home the old-fashioned way—sailing a 200-foot schooner across the Atlantic. The 25 teenagers on board the Wylde Swan sailed into the port of Harlingen and were reunited with their families on Sunday, roughly five weeks after leaving the island of Saint Lucia. Many of the students had minimal sailing experience when they signed up for an educational program aboard the two-masted schooner and had anticipated spending only six weeks cruising the relatively calm waters of the Caribbean. They eventually embarked on a journey of nearly 4,500 nautical miles across the ocean. Along the way, the students gradually got past their seasickness and watched dolphins swim alongside the vessel. One 17-year-old told the Omrop Fryslan Dutch radio station that it had been “an even more exciting journey than what I had signed up for.”
Face masks become mandatory in public across most of Germany (Washington Post) Most federal states across Germany implemented rules on the wearing of face masks in public on Monday, amid hopes that it will allow businesses to reopen without sparking a second wave of infections. The details differ between federal states. For instance in Berlin, face masks are mandatory on public transport, but violating the rule will not be penalized. In Munich and other cities, however, the rules are expected to be more strictly enforced with hefty fines. Face masks are now also mandatory in supermarkets and other shops across much of the country.
Dry Germany, drying Rhine (Bloomberg) Germany’s spring showers haven’t materialized this year, and that’s drying out the country’s most important river (the Rhine), prompting concerns that key industrial goods might have trouble making it to their destination. Typically one of the wettest months, Europe’s biggest economy has received just 5% of its normal April rainfall so far, according to Germany’s federal weather service. It’s on course to be the driest month since records began in 1881.
The right to work from home (Bild am Sonntag) German Labor and Social Affairs Minister Hubertus Heil has called to enshrine the right to work from home into German law, in a move that could become more common as advanced economies emerge from their coronavirus epidemics. “Anyone who wants to, and whose workplace allows it, should be able to work at home—even when the coronavirus pandemic is over,” Heil told Bild am Sonntag.
Saving Czech pubs (Worldcrunch) With more than 90% of pubs closed due to lockdown measures, the Czech Republic has been deprived of an emblematic part of its culture. In response, Czechs have spent 7 million CZK (257,124 euro) since the beginning of April on beer and food vouchers to be consumed in better times, reported iROZHLAS.cz. Started by the Czech Beer and Malt Association, the site “Zachraň svou hospodu!” (Save Your Pub!) enables concerned drinkers to buy vouchers in order to support their favorite bars and restaurants through the coronavirus shutdown, and use them whenever the cash-strapped pubs reopen.
Mideast economies take massive hit with oil price crash (AP) Iraq is planning painful cuts in social benefits relied on by millions of government workers. Saudi Arabia will likely have to delay mega-projects. Egypt and Lebanon face a blow as their workers in the Gulf send back less of the much-needed dollars that help keep their fragile economies afloat. The historic crash in oil prices in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic is reverberating across the Middle East as crude-dependent countries scramble to offset losses from a key source of state revenue—and all this at a time when several of them already face explosive social unrest. While some Gulf countries can rely on a cushion of foreign currency reserves, nowhere in the region are the circumstances more dire than in Iraq, where oil sales fund 90% of the state budget. Iraq saw massive protests in the past months by a populace angry over the weak economy and rampant corruption—and the turmoil could erupt again. Cutbacks in spending will only add to the pain for a population struggling to get by under coronavirus restrictions.
Lebanese defy coronavirus lockdown and block roads, protesting deteriorating economy (AP) Protesters took the streets across Lebanon late Sunday, blocking roads and highways to protest the worsening economy, in defiance of a coronavirus-triggered lockdown and curfew imposed by authorities, according to the country’s official news agency. Sunday’s demonstrations were the latest to rock Lebanon in recent days, even as a lockdown and a dusk-to-dawn curfew remained in place. The coronavirus pandemic has deepened Lebanon’s worst economic crisis since the nation’s 15 year civil war that ended in 1990. Since October, hundreds of thousands have demonstrated against the government and its elites, decrying corruption and other mismanagement that has crippled the economy.
Netanyahu confident of U.S. backing on annexation (Foreign Policy) On Sunday, Benjamin Netanyahu told a pro-Israel Christian group, the European Commission for Israel, that he was confident the United States would give its blessing to a planned annexation of parts of the occupied West Bank in a matter of months. A condition of Netanyahu’s newly formed coalition with Benny Gantz is that Washington must approve any annexation decision first. Writing in Foreign Policy on April 23, a trio of seasoned Israeli military commanders warned Netanyahu against such a move. Ami Ayalon (a former chief of the Israeli Shin Bet security service), Tamir Pardo (a former director of the Mossad), and Gadi Shamni (a former commander of the Israel Defense Forces Central Command) argued that annexation would undermine Israeli security and could spark a popular backlash in Jordan and Egypt—endangering hard-won peace treaties with those countries. “This irreversible step, once taken, is likely to trigger a chain reaction beyond Israel’s control,” they wrote.

Giving energy a new shape, on the Island of Capri
A power station becomes distinctive element of the relation between urban fabric and nature
The new Terna power station designed by the Italian studio Frigerio Design Group is an innovative architecture, elegantly integrated into the unique natural context.
Capri, Naples, Italy | The new Terna power station is an industrial architecture that merges into the unique historical and natural landscape of the island of Capri. Designed by the Italian studio Frigerio Design Group – winner of the international competition with restricted procedure held by Terna, the company that manages the high and extra-high voltage national power grid in Italy – the new Station is a pioneering project with important environmental benefits. It is also a unique example in the world of innovative architecture for electrical power Stations.
In designing the Capri project, built on an area of about 2,700 square meters, architect Enrico Frigerio developed a linguistics based on geometry, greenery and light. Thus the station becomes a discreet element, elegantly integrated into a unique natural context.
Capri, the only island in the Gulf of Naples not of volcanic origin, stands out for its unmistakable profile etched in calcareous rock, modelled by time in steep, and precipitous walls covered with Mediterranean vegetation. The architecture also gives the territory a new symbol, an expression of a contemporary sensitivity.
The new power station completes the electrical connection between Capri and the mainland: a pioneering project realized with an investment of 150 million euros made by Terna, that makes possible to provide the island with energy from renewable sources and to reduce polluting emissions to zero – by decommissioning the current diesel power plant – while making the island safer at the same time.
The new Terna station ensures remarkable benefits in terms of safety, continuity, quality and stability in their provision of electricity. The new power line, entirely underwater and underground, will deliver higher quality, reliability and efficiency to the local electrical service.
The decommissioning of the diesel plant which was on the island and the possibility of providing electricity from renewable sources – coming from the mainland – will bring considerable benefits from an environmental point of view. At the same time the inclusion of Capri in the national electric grid will guarantee savings for the collectivity and for the electric system estimated around 20 million euros per year and a 130-thousand-ton reduction in CO2 per year.
The architectural project
An industrial building developed from the special context of the site, which integrates into the natural landscape with a sense of renewed harmony. The natural matrix of Capri, its calcareous steps, the Mediterranean vegetation and the elements characterising the place inspire the architectural project developed by Frigerio Design Group.
The building represents a dialogue with the context by standing as a sign of the renewed relationship between what is built and the surrounding environment, far from the perennial conflict between the two. Materials, geometries and details preserve the same richness and vibration of light the natural scenario offers. The orography of the land determines the layout of the power station: the limestone crags going up from the Marina Grande become retaining walls or buildings, while the vegetation softens the visual impact, by occupying empty spaces in a spontaneous manner.
Facades and Geometry
The peculiar shades of colour of Capri’s landscape are recreated in the facades of the building, almost as if to make it a further variation of the natural ones. The industrial character of the architecture is expressed in the strong quality of the materials and details, enriched by finishing and assembly particulars. Taking the distinctly aggressive environmental conditions into account (salt air, humidity, UV rays), certain solutions were developed to reduce maintenance to zero.
The play on solids and voids gives birth to dynamic perceptual effects helping to mitigate the visual impact of the architecture and to create a relationship with the special nature of the place. The architecture acts as a pivot connecting the diffused urban fabric and nature. The architectural finishing of the complex consists of several geometric elements, obtained by basic trapezoidal formal abstraction, which overall create variable and vibrant compositions.
Landscaping
Greenery, the second natural matrix inspiring the project, creeps through the volumes by occupying empty spaces, spreading out spontaneously just as it does in the areas surrounding the lot and in the limestone walls of the island. The vegetation is typical and local with evergreen shrubs and plants to guarantee the constant mitigating effect throughout the year and to minimise maintenance. The landscaping project was conceived to reduce maintenance to zero and achieve autonomous growth after a brief period to allow the plants to set their roots.
The light
The lighting design was developed in full respect of the landscape and minimising any light pollution. The lighting devices, with cut-off parabolas, were positioned to hide lighting sources; LED technology was adopted to reduce consumption and waste. The lighting design between the railing and the walls illuminates the perforated sheets upwards and walls downwards, thus making the view of the power station evocative also by night.

Kotor Old Town: 1350 Steps to The Crown
Kotor Old Town is rising star of Montenegro. For a few years, Kotor became more and more people among the traveller. Kotor is a very small city with only 13510 residents. City is located at the Gulf of Kotor and more popular than the capital of Montenegro, Podgorica. Kotor Old town is surrounded by fortifications built by the Republic of Venice. History of the town dates back to the Roman era. In this post, you will discover this fascinating city of one of the youngest countries in the world.
Panoramic view of the Bay of Kotor from the Kotor Fortress (Source).
History of Kotor
Early History of Kotor Kotor has a long-standing and complex history and maybe the most fascinating one when compared to the other major tourist spots. Name of the Kotor first appeared in the Roman artefacts. Those times (168 BC) the city is known as Acruvium, Ascrivium or Ascruvium and was the part of the Dalmatia. Kotor always fortified by its conquerors because of the geostrategic location of the settlement. Around 535 Emperor Justinian built a fortress over the town (Ascrivium) after the expelling the Ostrogoths. After a quite long time from the Emperor Justinian Kotor was plundered by the Saracens in 840 and fortified more and more toward to the peak of Saint Ivan by the Constantine VII Porphyrogennetos in the 10th century. Between 1002 and 1143 Kotor was under influence of the First Bulgarian Empire.
The entrance of old town Kotor with post-World War II sign "What belongs to others we don't want, ours we don't give" (Source). Venice, Ottoman Rule and Modern Times Kotor conquered by the Grand Principality of Serbian in 1185 and Serbs ruled the city until the year of 1391. After the death of Tvrtko (King of Bosnia) in 1391, Kotor became fully independent until the threat of conquered by the Ottomans. Kotor asked for help from Venice when the Ottoman threat rose up. The city was part of Venetian Albania between 1420 to 1797. In this time frame Ottomans besieged the city two times, 1538 and 1657. More than 4 century Venice made great contribution to the Kotor's current heritage. During these 4 centries city was own time-to-time by the Ottomans also.
You will get lost the fascinating streets of Old Town (Source). After the Treaty of Campo Fomio in 1797, Kotor passed to the Habsburg Monarch but in 1805 became part of the French Empire's client state. Even Russian held the city for a while but in 1810 the city return to the Kingdom of Italy. Kotor became one of the main bases of the Austro-Hungarian Navy and home of the Austrian Fifth Fleet. After the end of World War I (The Great War), Yugoslavia founded an the city became part of it. Kotor got it name from that date. During the tensions of World War II, Kotor annexed by Italy and stayed that way between 1941 and 1943. It is complicated, right? Kotor has a stunning heritage because of its historical heritage.
Where is Kotor Old Town?
Kotor is only 85 km away from the Podgorica, capital of the Kotor. If you want to go to the Kotor Old Town by plane you should go to Podgorica Airport. The nearest airport to the Kotor is the Tivat Airport but it will hard to find a flight to there. It is also possible to go to the Kotor Old Town by renting a car from nearest major cities like Tiran, Pristine or Skopje.
How to Go to Kotor Old Town?
Unfortunately, there is no train to the Kotor from any city because of the channelling geography of the area. You should rent a car, taxi or buy a ticket for the buses. Don't worry buses are good to travel and trusted. You should find the bus routes to the Kotor Old Town from other cities. Podgorica to Kotor: 14 - 20 Euro Tiran to Kotor: 13 - 19 Euro Belgrade to Kotor: 19 - 40 Euro Skopje to Kotor: 24 - 35 Euro Budva to Kotor: 11 - 17 Euro
Kotor Old Town and Fortress
When you enter the gate of the Kotor Old Town you will start time travel through history. Kotor Old Town have multiple historical places to see during your time there. At the main entrance of the Kotor Old Town, you will a couple of places to drink coffee or eat a pizza with shops and other places. Before starting to move up to the top I'm strongly suggesting to walk around the street for a while. You need to heat your leg, you will need it :) Gate of the Kotor Old Town opens at 08.00 am in the morning. If you go to the Kotor during summer you will think to go to the top early hours in the morning or evening to avoid the excessive heat.
The main entrance of the Kotor Old Town (Source). There is no tickets or price to enter the Kotor Old Town. Also, you don't need a guide to visit the town. There are multiple apps or maps for the Kotor Old Town. You will also find maps at the entrance. In this link, you will a really good map and information about the trail to the top. There are three entrances to the old town; South Gurdic Gate, Main Sea Gate and North River Gate. You will probably use the Sea Gate to enter. Before you start to walk to the top you may want to visit some important spots in the town. You will find the list (a long list) of them below; Riva Bastion Campana Tower Citadella Valier Bastion Corner Bastion Gurdic Bastion St. Tryphon's Cathedral St. Nicholas Church St. Lucas Church St. Mary's (Blessed Ozana) St. Paul's Church Santa Anna's Church St. Michael's Church St. Josep's Chruch St. Francis Monastery Santa Clara's Monastery Arms Square Flour Square Karampana Square Town Tower Clock Prince's Palace Old Town Hall Venetian Arsenal Town Hall Historical Archives Venetian Barracks Austrian Prison Drago Palace Grgurina Palace Pima Palace Macchin House Lombardic Palace
The clock tower of the Kotor Old Town (Source). Time to Start to Walk If you spend time for a while in the Kotor Old Town you will start to walk to the top. There will an 8 Euro entrance fee to the trail road to the top. There is around 1350 step that you have to climb. Don't worry there are multiple places to rest while climbing. There are 3 different routes for the trail to the top and down. There are two important place in this trail, Lady of Remedy Chruch and St. John's Castle. It will be easy to reach the church but the castle will be a little tiring for you. If you're confident don't use the red route to go down. Because on some part of it there are no stairs or road to follow. You just need to jump over the wall or make your own way through the trees.
The red route would be really challenging (Source). Lady of Remedy Chruch The year 1435 was a sad page of the history of Kotor. Plague during the year wiped out most of the population of the Kotor Old Town. People of Kotor built the Lady of Remedy Church to have God's protection over them. Your first aim should be reached to the Lady of Remedy Chruch. After around 500 steps you will reach the church. It is not a big but beautiful one. Lady of Remedy Chruch was built during the 15th century. The church has a baroque style with a gothic arch. Three bells of the church are quite famous because they made in the bell foundry De Poli in Vittorio Veneto, Italy. You will see a crypt inside the church. That crypt is related to Bolic family of Kotor. There is also the tomb of count Anton Lukovic (Kotor citizen) outside of the church.
You will rest and enjoy the view for a while (Source). St. John's Castle You need to climb around 800 steps more to reach the St. John's Castle from the Lady of Remedy Chruch. St. John's Castle is located 260 meters high from the sea level. Unfortunately, St. John's Castle is a crumbled ruin but it is still possible to climb over it and enjoy the view through the Kotor Old Town and stunning nature of the region. There is a plan for the restoration of the castle, pathways, sightseeing spot and other thing but it didn't start yet.
Ruins of the St. Jonh's Castle (Source).
Suggestions for Visiting Kotor Old Town
It better starts early to climb up. Take a couple of bottle of water. You won't find anywhere to buy during the trail. Maybe there will be some people who will be selling it but not for sure. Climbing will take around 2 hours, be prepared for that. Don't forget to wear suitable clothes and especially shoes. Enjoy the view! If you ever visited or thinking to visit the Kotor Old Town please share your experiences and questions on the comment section to help others. Read the full article

Empty Nester Home Renovation
Located in Coronado, California, and recently renovated by Brittney Nielsen of Brittney Nielsen Interior Design, this home was designed as a second home for a couple with 3 sons. They were soon-to-be empty nesters and have since sold the family home and moved into this house. The home was a track home built in the 1970’s that hadn’t been updated. It is in a wonderful location on the canal in the Coronado Cays and the clients are avid boat and water sports enthusiasts.
The client wanted to modernize the floor plan and add natural light to the space, so the team took the house down to the studs, added approximately 450 square feet and reimagined the entire layout. The exterior elevation had a Spanish feel but the client wanted a clean lined modern feel inside. See more details shared by the interior designer of this inspiring empty nester renovation.

New-Builds in Naples
Big things are happening for Pegasus Builders, who recently opened their new Naples office at 1400 Gulfshore Blvd. North, Suite 130. Chris and his team have been building bespoke homes and stables in Palm Beach/Wellington for years, and are excited to share some of their recent builds in our area. Step inside their new digs and you’ll see the walls adorned with projects of all scopes and sizes. From a natural wood horse stable to a contemporary take on Art Deco, the hanging portfolio is inspiring.
Make your way into the conference room with hands-down, the coolest live-edge and glass table, and you’ll see the renderings for a nearly completed Crayton Road home. 2175 Crayton Road is located steps away from the Gulf of Mexico and can be yours! The modern, 4400 sq ft home is a fresh addition to The Moorings area. Pegasus pulled out all the stops in this beautiful 4bd/4ba home, which has received praise from local realtors. Custom luxury cabinets, high-end appliances, an open floor plan, a gorgeous mix of limestone and wide plank wood flooring, a Euro edge pool and spa…these are just a few of the details that elevate the newly constructed home now on the market. A complete smart home system is in place and ready for its new owners to take the house for a test drive.
Sitting on the table are blueprints for yet another Naples home. Not to be overshadowed by those completed, this home currently underway at 2155 Shad Court will house an eclectic mix of contemporary elements. Woods, metals and other natural materials are to be incorporated in this 2-story, 4 bedroom home. Located on a cul-de-sac in the coveted Royal Harbor neighborhood, the Shad Court home is all about outdoor living. In addition to the spa-inspired outdoor space, the lot features nearly 171 feet of deep and wide-water stretches perfect for big boat maneuvering and direct access to Naples Bay. Stay tuned for more pictures of the build upon it’s completion!
If you’re interested in either the Crayton Road home or the Shad Court home, feel free to reach Chris by email, or drop into the new office and talk shop with John. Better yet, dream up your perfect house and let Pegasus make it a reality!
