Saha said: ‘Pelling is one of the most beautiful hill stations in India. I observed so many birds when I visited the area. I snapped this very colourful bird [a verditer flycatcher (Eumyias thalassinus)] in a garden near our hotel. The extremely vibrant blue colour makes this bird so beautiful.’ Location: Pelling, Sikkim, India

December 11, 2021 - Nilgiri Flycatcher (Eumyias albicaudatus)
Found in parts of southern India, these flycatchers live in evergreen mountain and lowland forests and shade coffee and cardamom plantations. Foraging in short flights from perches, alone or with other flycatchers, they feed on invertebrates and berries. They build cup-shaped nests in cavities from moss, plant fibers, and rootlets where females lay clutches of two or three eggs.

Leucoptilon Sangster et al., 2021 (new genus)
(A male individual of Leucoptilon concretum, photographed by M. A. Naturalist, under CC BY-NC 4.0)
Meaning of name: Leucoptilon = white feather
Species included: L. concretum (white-tailed flycatcher, type species, previously in Cyornis)
Age: Holocene (Meghalayan), extant
Where found: Dense forests of Southeast Asia
Notes: Leucoptilon concretum is an Afro-Eurasian flycatcher, a diverse group of small songbirds. Many Afro-Eurasian flycatchers hunt for insects by flying after them from a perch, though they also include primarily ground-foraging species like the European robin (Erithacus rubecula). The white-tailed flycatcher is one of the tree-dwelling types of Afro-Eurasian flycatchers, and is specifically part of the group Niltavinae, in which the males of most species tend to be primarily blue in color.
Niltavines also include the genera Anthipes, Cyanoptila, Cyornis, Eumyias, Niltava, and Sholicola. There is still some uncertainty about exactly how the white-tailed flycatcher is related to other niltavines, but recent analyses consistently find that it does not belong to Cyornis, which it was formerly classified as a species of. As a result, it has been reassigned to the new genus Leucoptilon. Physically, Leucoptilon can be distinguished from members of the genus Cyornis by being larger than most of them and having white patches on its tail feathers (though the white patches happen to be less easily seen in the subspecies pictured above...).
Reference: Sangster, G., P. Alström, J. Gaudin, and U. Olsson. 2021. A new genus for the White-tailed Flycatcher Cyornis concretus (Aves: Muscicapidae). Zootaxa 5072: 599–600. doi: 10.11646/zootaxa.5072.6.7
