Lunari Heritage in Zaun
This is gonna be a reach, but from the little we've seen of Vi and Jinx's mom and younger Silco, I'd guess they were both from the same ethnic group.
In a place like Zaun, where the people are left with scraps, any piece of jewelry sticks out. Vi's mom and Silco are both wearing similar pieces of jewelry. Silco's bracelet could likely be fitted as a necklace since it twice wraps over his wrist. Neither are wearing anything of high quality, but the necklace and bracelet in their respective pictures seem decently maintained if not worn. That's when I thought, these are probably heirlooms.
In fact they looked pretty similar too, but in smaller scale of the princess's own pendants. I wouldn't bring this up if it weren't for the fact that Piltovans prioritize elaborate art-deco aesthetics, the more elaborately geometric the better (Councilor Shoola). So you would assume even the simplest jewelry would be a square pendant or a straight line. But no, big plain circles, and then I remembered we saw that before, on the princess Ambessa killed. Big bronze circles.
And when we look at young Vi , you notice that she's wearing jewelry too. A simple necklace with a green (it looks green) gem. And I realized that the princess's necklace was also adorned green gems.
I'm pulling from scraps, but it's interesting that small things these Zaunites have to adorn themselves (though not for long with the time skips) are similar versions if not simpler version's of the princess's.
At first I thought this meant that many of the cast were actually of Ionian descent. But then in the Princess's scene a thought kept coming back to me, "Why is Mel wearing purple?". Mel, a skilled diplomat from a young age, typically wears the main colors of the nations she hosts and is hosted by. White for Piltover, Black for Noxus (Ambessa), and always with her signature accents of gold. So if Mel followed her mother to Ionia ,where green is a culturally significant color, why purple? It's because Mel and Ambessa weren't in Ionia, they were in Targon fighting the Lunari.
The Lunari are Rakkor tribal people in the Targonian region who worship the moon, and are persecuted for it by the Solari, the religious order that worships the sun. While technically Mt. Targon is influenced by Mt. Olympus and Greek mythology aesthetic, that's more the case for the Solari. Overtime the Lunari aesthetic has been mixed it's originally nomadic culture with East Asian influences. The prominent colors of the Lunari happen to be turquoise, silver, black and purple. It was such a little thing to remember but it made me see connections I hadn't thought about.
Suddenly everything starts to connect. The bronze coins represent the 3 moons that exist in Arcane's Runeterra. How do we know there are 3 moons, because the Valdiani piece Jinx stole was depicting their planet. In the Valdiani there are 3 orbits circling the Earth, meaning 3 moons (or satelites). Now the engraving on the gold of the princess's necklace makes sense, because it's supposed to resemble the gates at the peak of Mt. Targon. The pendant itself is shaped like the mountain with the gates fitted at the top.
Frankly, it works for the Princess to have been Lunari and waves of descendants of the Lunari to arrive in Piltover and end up in Zaun. In Arcane, Piltover was created as a safe haven to escape the Rune Wars 200 years from the start of the show. Even after the Rune Wars ended the shipping port has likely seen waves of migrant labor and refugees from the ongoing crisis that occur in Runeterra (*cough*Noxus*cough*). It's likely that many of the current generation of Zaunites are of mixed heritage of the various fleeing people's.
It creates a whole new dynamic of the ways in which Piltover's laws, their Ethos, strips the people of Zaun from their identity and reducing them to tools for the mines. Magic is inherently a part of religious ceremonies and religion in general in Runeterra, especially for the Lunari. How do you practice your religion in a place that has banned the means by which it's conducted? There must have been more people like the Lunari who didn't have a problem with their magic, their problem was that they were being persecuted.
The remnants of family keepsakes brought over as communities fled were clung to as best as possible especially as they had to let go of part their spiritual identity. But even that doesn't seem to have lasted either. Vi doesn't keep her necklace, her mother is dead, so lost is her necklace, and we never see Silco wear his bracelet. They could have been stolen, or at best, hidden for safe keeping, maybe Enforcers get suspicious at the hint of mysticism and suddenly they want to talk.
Finally, maybe a little less related, it is interesting how prominent Piltovans and Zaunites take on day and night aspects. The sun shines over Piltover at their best, begins to set at times of uncertainty. While in the cover of night with moon above, the strongest Zaunites strike hardest. One more thing, it is interesting how Arcane's Jinx has taken on darker tones of purple rather than stick with neon pink. I always have to go back and look at a reference to remember that her pants are purple-er than I recall.
Update: I wanted to include that the large doodle Jinx made on her cup actually looks similar to the Lunari's sigil. And the sigil remains on the cup into the timeskip, also the center moon is made smaller within the crescent like in the necklace. I also noticed Jinx's cup later has more violent bomb imagery around it.
Update 2: With the final season approaching I'm noticing this is getting some attention again. I would like to say that if I could write this from scratch again I'd say it's more likely the princess is from Ionia now, which doesn't up end the Lunari theory.
Previous League canon confirms the Lunari faith does have ties to Ionia. A good portion of the Lunari are Ionian in descent, and Diana, their aspect of the moon (essentially their demigod), currently lives in Ionia. League even created skinline for Ionians blood moon worshippers, an edgy offshoot of the Lunari faith. It's all very interesting and a bit complicated because Riot loves to drop plot points in the lore and never come back. I'll try to clean something up for a longer explanation later. What's crazy is the Medardas are still the aggressors because Noxians and Solarians, which the Medardas are both, terrorize Ionians and Lunaris respectively.
#arcane#lunari#zaun#silco#vi arcane#jinx arcane#mel medarda#there's a lot to think about#for everyone including mel#piltover#arcane theory#arcane meta#arcane speculation#thank goodness i wrote this before i discovered the blood moon aspect or i would have writtern something WAY longer

𝐓𝐈𝐙𝐈𝐑𝐈 (1/2)
Tiziri (n): often used as a feminine name within some North African communities, tiziri is an Amazigh word that means 'moon' or 'moonlight'. It reflects and symbolizes the tranquility, serenity, and beauty associated with the moon. (proud amazigh moment)
: ̗̀➛ pair: yoongi x f reader/oc
: ̗̀➛ chapter word count: 2K
: ̗̀➛ tags: supernatural/superpowers, sorcerer!yoongi, belly dancer!reader/oc, private entertainment worker!reader/oc, arabian/middle eastern older eras settings, use of gun (nothing gruesome), time traveling, no smut, (will add more tags if necessary)
: ̗̀➛ synopsis: In a world of simplicity and ordinary, Yoongi was only a teenage boy stuck in a turmoil of his indentity and purpose in life when he embarked on a long, tough journey of endless obstacles and ignorance. For years, he traveled the world and crossed paths with all kinds of humans and characters, all kinds of situations and dangers. He worked on honing his powers and bringing honor to his kind, despite, and despite, and despite. However, nothing could ever compare to a certain set of eyes. Not that he would ever believe that himself, anyway.
OR: when a powerful sorcerer falls to his knees in front of a belly dancer’s eyes.
: ̗̀➛ A/N: Chapter one is finally here! enjoy and interact with it, so I know you're interested in more <3 and give me your feedback!!!! I'm pretty proud of my improvement with this fic. it's completely new to me, I did a whole lot of research and other stuff to make it as interesting and good as possible.
: ̗̀➛ warning: this piece of fiction does not represent any community or ethnicity or group of people. I was inspired by the arab/middle eastern culture (as a semi arab myself), but it's all a product of my imagination. I hope this point is clear.
★ MASTERLIST.
Yoongi’s eyes shifted from one corner to another, taking in the sight of the dimly lit lounge room he was resting in. The several scented candles scattered around casted warmth and a hint of intimacy to the air. A kind of intimacy he didn’t find in any of the places he visited in other villages and tribes before in his long journey.
A few customers settled down on comfortable floor cushions just like he did. A small band was playing on oud, goblet drums and other instruments in a corner. Their music drowned the noise of quiet chatters and the soft boiling of a number of hookahs, including the one Yoongi had planted inches away from where he was lounging.
He took a long drag, feeling the refreshing flavor of mint and lemon smoke on his tongue. By habit, his fingers fidgeted with the magical long chain he always had wrapped securely around his wrist. He liked tracing the engravings on its moon shaped pendant.
A number of dancers emerged to the center of the room, each with an almost see through red veil over their head. The music continued flowing as they danced around. Yoongi didn’t bother lifting his eyes from the carpeted floor, focusing instead on the rhythmic instrument sounds he grew to like listening to, but soon after, when he did, his eyes froze on one single figure.
Among the group of performers, one stood out the most to him. And by the content smiles and lingering eyes he could see on the faces of the other attendances—once he actually peeled his eyes away from the show before him—he could guess this particular one was a favorite.
She took the center with a different, more accentuating attire than the rest. Yoongi let his eyes observe the way she moved her body, the way her arms extended and moved ever so gracefully, the way her waist had a life of its own. Her hips swayed fluidly, oscillating between sharpness and smoothness. Her face and hair were hidden behind a cloth, showing off her eyes alone.
And those eyes… A sight he never saw before.
Her irises: each with a different color. One, a perfect brown, the other, an ice blue. Each chanting: I am beauty, magic and temptation.
Yoongi wanted to avert his gaze. To look away and feel the boredom seeping into his pores like it was supposed to. To note whether every swing and turn is well synched with the flowing music or not. But he couldn’t. The hookah mouthpiece stayed tucked in the corner of his mouth. He kept his eyes carefully fixated on her, face blank and empty of emotion, as he followed her every move.
A server crossed the hall, holding out a tray of pretty metal goblets to the dancers. Without breaking the performance, she smoothly picked one up and stood up straight in front of him. He watched as she marched a few steps closer and knelt down, then held it out to him.
In that very moment, as her sultry eyes locked with his cold ones and pierced well into them, a chill ran down his spine. He, for some undefined reason, found her eyes so captivating that he couldn’t bring himself to blink just yet.
He reached a hand out and took hold of the cup without breaking the contact of their eyes. Then, he watched as she found her way back to her spot at the center of the huge persian carpet underneath her.
The moment she stood still, her hips broke out in quick quivers that lasted for a good one or two minutes. It was mesmerizing, like she controlled the sound of the drums herself, matching every single tap on its own with a proper lift and drop.
The performance went on for a few more minutes, and Yoongi slowly sipped on the drink he was served. His gaze was mostly fixed on the golden anklet wrapped around her ankle, absentmindedly grounding himself after being in the chokehold of those mesmerizing eyes for longer than he’d ever like.
When he didn’t hear the instruments playing any longer, followed by the clapping that erupted around the hall, he realized that it was over.
His gaze never left the dancer that had his full attention the entire time as she bowed down gracefully then quit the hall with the rest of the group through a beaded curtain.
“Have a blessed evening.” Said a man, who looked close to being past his forties, at the front desk near the exit. He had a turban similar to the other servers inside the lounge, but different in color.
Yoongi’d been in there for quite some time, sitting down and enjoying the calm atmosphere, thinking and mulling things over. Amongst the train of thoughts he was taking, he found himself thinking back on that same performance. The one that caught his attention like no other before.
He never was one to sit and devote his attention to such pieces of entertainment, yet he never watched something quite as spellbinding as that of some previous minutes. Time was a concept he could often play with, though with some unprevented consequences. Yet those eyes, like a magnet, pulled at his senses to a world where time stood still, unmoving.
Although that thought alone stirred some irritation in his system, a tiny piece of his being deep inside couldn’t help craving more of it, more of that special sight in itself.
Acknowledging the worker’s service, Yoongi nodded his head respectfully and ignored the way his gaze lingered on his own face a few seconds more than necessary, before heading towards the wooden exit door.
It was sometime in the late afternoon when he got there, but the sun was already almost completely hidden under the horizon. The warm tints that color summer skies around that time were fading out, leaving room for the night to fully set in.
He looked at the pale buildings aligned on both sides. The lanterns hung along the tall, semi narrow passageway worked well with the paleness of the limestone of the village’s architecture.
Everything was new to him there. A sudden want to see the atmosphere under the moonlight alone, away from all the humanmade lights, washed over him as he walked ahead with steady steps.
Yoongi was immersed in breathing the beginning of a chill night’s air around him when a sudden body collided onto his, once he'd made it near a sharp bend.
He quickly steadied himself, a low curse slipping out between his lips, and the other person almost made it to the ground had it not been for the tight grip he had on their arm, pulling her up.
“Argh!” Their cry grabbed his attention. “Careful there!”
The person—a woman groaned as she clutched onto one of her shoulders. He took note of the blood under that hand and her pained expression. One of her eyes was covered with a black eyepatch, while the other roamed his face carefully as if trying to identify it. After some seconds, her frown dissolved a little.
“You-” she cut her own sentence short with a pained yelp. A hand yanked her by the hair and pulled her away from him.
“Hey, hey hey!” Yoongi was on high alert. He quickly grabbed the arm in a tight hold, willing to draw it away, but the other face-covered man yanked his collar with his free hand instead.
“Mind your business, foreigner.” He growled through gritted teeth, then pushed him aside.
“Get your hands off of me!” The woman exclaimed, rushing to free herself from the harsh grasp. Yoongi was able to get a direct glance at the injury on her shoulder once she moved her hand from it.
He heaved a sigh, grabbing the man’s arm again with more force. He had to remind himself to keep his strength at bay, to not blow his own cover just yet. He, however, couldn’t resist punching him in the face.
The punch was quite effortless, but the man stumbled to the ground. Yoongi was ready to receive whatever reaction he could get from him when a shout from the end of the passage grabbed his attention.
“Boss, there she is!”
Two other men were rushing towards them. One of them had the same exact clothing as the one he just dealt with, while the other was dressed in something that looked fancier than the other pair.
If the number of his opponents did not worry him, then the gun that the latter was holding out in their direction did a perfect job at unsettling him.
“God- What are you doing? Run away!” The woman behind him urged, but did not move an inch from her own spot.
He turned around and gave her a confused look, but the man who was on the ground surprised them both and struck him with a punch.
Yoongi's teeth dug into the inside of his cheek. He hissed. “That was painful, damn it.”
With quick, sharp moves, Yoongi countered his opponent with a jab to his guts and a kick to the ribs. Then, he gripped his covered head and slammed it onto his own knee, before throwing him to the ground again.
The other two were so close to reaching them. He wasted no more precious seconds and spinned, gripping the woman's arm before starting impulsively running through the labyrinth alleyways foreign to him.
The ground under their feet and the buildings on both of their sides were a blur. The sound of her ragged gasps ringed in his ears as he tightened his grip on her arm, feeling her pace winding down the slightest of bits.
“Don’t stop!” Yoongi threw over his shoulder.
The sounds from the busy main street were getting closer and clearer. The scent of fresh market wares grew thicker in the air. From spices to fresh herbs, vegetables and fruits. A light sense of relief filled him at that.
Moments later, the stillness of the alleyways was replaced with the warmer and brighter atmosphere of the bustling market. They hurried through the main, larger street, blending into the crowds of modestly dressed individuals.
Yoongi threw another glance over his shoulder and spotted the three figures searching for them. With a swift clench of his hand, all the lanterns that were assembled above the entirety of the local market with multiple cords were switched off, followed by a second or two of complete silence before people started moving and mumbling in confusion. The only thing illuminating the place was the moon that started its fresh journey in the night’s sky.
The face of the uncovered man twisted into a grimace, frustrated as he couldn’t catch a glimpse of them or even move through the crowd. He pointed his gun up to the sky and shot a couple of times.
Startled gasps and scared shouts erupted in the marker. Yoongi cursed under his breath as people started scattering and scrambling around in all directions.
“From here!” The woman was the one to pull at his hand this time. “Hurry, quick!”
They struggled through panicked bodies until they slipped into a narrow backstreet, never looking back. Even as the volume of the chaos was getting lower behind their backs, they kept running and taking turns through the web of never ending alleys.
Using his free hand, Yoongi made sure to subtly move some things he deemed helpful around to block the path behind them.
The further they ran, the harder it was for Yoongi to distinguish the differences between each alley they took. His breathing was beginning to become heavier, the distant presence of footsteps and grunts chasing after them was no longer audible—or maybe he just was too distracted by the woman’s pained gasps and hisses to pick up on anything else.
“s-stop… I c-can't...” She struggled to mumble.
With one last glance over his shoulder, Yoongi pulled her into an alcove, pushing her gently onto the wall while keeping a wary watch over the path they’d just taken. When he found no trace of their chasers, he stepped back and hid his body as well, panting.
“Don’t you dare move.”

Amazon has come under fire for a second time this week, and the most recent controversy involves a Jewish activist who accused the e-commerce giant of having a “big, giant Jewish problem” for allegedly canceling her talk to company employees but allowing anti-Israel rapper Macklemore to address staffers.
Best-selling author and renowned speaker Samantha Ettus revealed in an Instagram video on Tuesday that she was invited by Amazon a few months ago to speak to an unofficial group of Jewish employees at the company. However, her talk was eventually canceled because the human resources department at Amazon decided she was “too controversial,” said the Harvard graduate and former TED Talk speaker.
A few months later, Ettus explained, Amazon invited Macklemore to speak to employees, reportedly at an official seminar for Amazon employees who are suffering from addiction or in recovery, in honor of September being National Recovery Month.
The “Hind’s Hall” singer has publicly spoken about his alcohol and drug addiction, but has also publicly accused Israel numerous times of committing a “genocide” of Palestinians during the Jewish state’s ongoing war with Hamas terrorists, which began after last year’s Oct. 7 massacre in Israel. Hamas-led terrorists murdered 1,200 people in southern Israel and took over 250 hostages, including Amazon employee Alexander Trufanov, who remains in captivity. Amazon has so far not publicly commented on Trufanov’s kidnapping.
Macklemore accused Israel of “genocide” when he performed at a “Palestine Will Live Forever” benefit concert last month, which took place just weeks after his pre-taped, Zoom seminar for Amazon employees, according to the New York Post.
“Despite the Jewish people’s pleas that this is an antisemite, you can’t have him speak, the employees are up in arms, [Macklemore] is allowed to speak,” Ettus said in her Instagram video. “So Macklemore is not controversial but I am … Amazon, you have a huge Jewish problem. What are you going to do about it?”
An Amazon spokesperson responded to Ettus’s accusations on Wednesday in a statement to The Algemeiner.
“Many of these assertions lack important context, and it’s inaccurate and misleading to suggest we tolerate hostility in our workplace,” the spokesperson said. “We realize this has been a difficult time for many, and we remain focused on supporting all of our employees.”
Ettus shared the news the same week that Amazon executive Dr. Ruba Borno appeared in a promotional video for the company wearing a pendant in the shape of Israel that had a Palestinian flag imposed on top. Amazon has since deleted the video but not before the company faced backlash from social media users, who called the video “disappointing and insulting” to Jews, threatened to cancel their Prime subscriptions, and called for Borno’s firing.
Ettus has a Substack called “The Jewsletter” and launched a campaign called New Voices, in which non-Jewish and Jewish celebrities and influencers, including Cindy Crawford and Kevin Nealon, draw awareness to antisemitism. Ettus also co-produced the documentary “Primal Fear: Jews Under Siege.”
She claimed in her Instagram video on Tuesday that Jewish employees at Amazon have been denied the right to form their own employee resource group, also known as an affinity group, even though the company has 13 such groups already, including ones representing Asians, women, military veterans, people with disabilities, Latinos, indigenous workers, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. Amazon “refuses to officially acknowledge” Jews and allow them to create an affinity group for themselves because the company believes Jews are “a religion [and] not an ethnicity,” Ettus claimed.

Jewish Life Pre-Diaspora: Jewelry
In my previous post in this series, I looked at something ephemeral and best seen in art; women’s hairstyles [x] and came up a bit short. While I’ll get to men’s hairstyles later I wanted to do something a little easier first, and so am doing a topic archaeology is the best tool at answering: What did indigenous Israelite and Judean people wear as jewelry?
Amir Golani has written the literal book on the subject, and so I’d recommend for further information and techniques you should read his book Jewelry from the Iron Age II Levant or his article Revealed by their jewelry: Ethnic identity of Israelites during the Iron Age in the southern Levant, but I’ll provide a summary and some images here.
Since in his writings on the topic Golani found the Israelites and Judahites (the members of the two Israelite Kingdoms in Canaan in the Iron Age) to be similar in ornamentation trends and groups them together, I’ll be doing the same here under the umbrella term Israelites.
(looooong post beneath the cut. you have been warned.)
Part 1: Distinctly Israelite Jewelry
While trade and the movement of craftspeople led to the dispersion of different styles of jewelry around the Mediterranean, we can see trends that indicate certain pieces of ornamentation are distinctive to Israelite culture.
Three types of pendants, usually made of bone or ivory but sometimes of terracotta or stone, follow the history of the Israelite kingdoms to a surprising degree: originating around the 10th century BCE and disappearing in the 8th Century BCE in the North, and the 7th to 6th centuries BCE in the South (matching the beginnings of the diasporas of Israel and Judah, respectively).
1.1 Club Pendants
These pendants are typically 4-9 cm long shaped pieces with rounded ends and a slightly conical shape. They have been found as far north as the Lebanese Coast and as far south as the northern Negev Desert, though most examples come from the historic borders of the Israelite Kingdoms. Some were plain, but many have bands, latticework, or ring-and-dot ‘eyes’ incised into them.
Similar pendants are found in Ephesus (in Asia Minor) and various sites on the Greek Mainland, but these all date to after the 8th century BCE, are truncated at the top rather than rounded, and only have the horizontal bands as decorations and may have arrived with Phoenician traders (as they had been found in the Phoenician city of Byblos in modern day Lebanon).
1.2 Plaque Pendants
These plaques were made of bone and usually had a stringing hole at one end, or with a tab to be attached to a string. Unlike the club pendants, they have more than a single shape; they can be rectangular or oval, circular or teardrops, and are incised with ring-and-dots, lines, and chevrons.
These have a much smaller range than the club-pendants, with most only being found in the territory of the Judean Kingdom. Two were found at Meggido in Israel’s territory, and one at the site of Hama in Syria.
It was at one point theorized that these served as calendars, since some examples have three rows of ten uniform ring-and-dots, the presence of examples with other, non-calendrical numbers (such as 17) indicates that this could not have been their only use.
1.3 Mallet Pendants
The most restricted of the Israelite pendants, both in morphology and in chronology, these pendants are made of two pieces of bone or ivory; a cylindrical head often decorated with ring-and-dot incisions, and a thin shaft pierced at one end for suspension that was inserted into the head at the other end.
These pendants appear in the 10th Century BCE, but disappear in the 8th Century, despite being found in both Israel and Judah.
The hammer form of these pendants, as well as their strict morphology, has led some to theorize that they were used to identify the wearer, though it is unknown if that identity would be to a profession, religion, or some other faction. Similar looking pendants are found in Sardinia in the 12th-10th centuries BCE, as well as Etruscan Italy and Greece in the 9th – 7th Centuries BCE, but those are made of cast bronze and are a single piece. There, however, we know from context that they were probably linked to the wearer’s profession. Whether this bears true for their Israelite counterparts is still unclear.
Part 2: Inherited Canaanite Traditions
While the bone pendants appear to be an aesthetic choice that evolved along with the Israelite identity, as a part of the Canaanite cultural tradition, Israelites also continued to create and wear adapted forms of Canaanite jewelry. Several styles of metallic jewelry that Canaanites also wore, and do not have aesthetic designs credited to the Phoenicians to the north, may be concluded to be the work of local craftspeople in the Israelite kingdoms.
2.1 Crescent Pendants
These are flat crescent-shaped pendants typically made of copper alloys, silver, or gold, though bone examples have been found. They are either strung through a hollow tab at the center of the pendant, connected to a string via two perforations in the crescent itself, or possibly directly sewn into clothing by those same perforations.
These pendants first appear in the area in the Middle Bronze Age (18th - 16th centuries BCE) and appear in archaeological contexts through the Iron Age II, with designs getting simpler over time.
What they represent is debated. Most intuitive to most people reading this would probably be the crescent moon, which was a widely used symbol in the Ancient Near East, either as a symbol of fertility or of redemption and regeneration. The moon cult has been extant in the region for a long time at this point (Jericho, one of the oldest cities in the world, is named after the local moon god Yarikh, who is also the source of the Hebrew word for The Moon, Yareakh).
Other hypotheses include bulls horns or boars tusks, the later of which were used in the area to ward the evil eye away from horses through the Ottoman Period in the Levant. This is further supported by one of the specimen from the Middle Bronze Age in Megiddo is apparently too large to be worn comfortably by a human, and lines up nicely with a story from the biblical story of Gidon taking crescents as spoils of war from Midianite camels in the book of Judges.
2.2 Rings
2.2.1 Finger Rings
Finger rings with bezels (a wider portion used for mounting or displaying an object or image) are by no means a Israelite invention; the style they imitated comes from Egyptian scarab rings, named for their scarab-shaped bezels, which first appeared around 2000 BCE. However, types were worn by Israelites, and their innovations on the style are of interest.
(Egyptian scarabs and scarab rings, via Wikimedia Commons)
The first style Israelites used, all dating to the 7th and 6th centuries BCE, widens and flattens the metal of the ring at its terminal ends, which can support a scarab or other bezel. The rings are made of silver or gold and flattened ends are decorated with flowers, palmettes, or other forms of decorative flora.
The bezel may be made of gold, silver, faience (ancient glass) or may be absent entirely (though it's possible the bezel was simply lost to the sands of time). Unfortunately, such rings are rare (and some of them are poorly documented), so a more robust typology is difficult.
The second form more closely resembles a traditional Egyptian scarab; a round body to the ring with a flattened area at the tips of the terminal ends to support a bezel that may be swiveled on its axis to show off all sides of the piece (this was very important with scarabs, as the bezel was shaped to resemble like a beetle and the flat bottom bore a seal or inscription). The key difference is the material of the scarabs: where the Egyptian scarab is faience or stone, the Israelite 'scaraboid' is made of metal, and the carved scarab is nonexistent.
These are extremely rare and only appear in the record at the end of the Iron Age II (right before the diaspora) and in the Persian period following, so they may have been a relatively short-lived phenomenon - at the same time similar non-metallic, non-ring seals and scarabs are relatively common.
2.2.2 Large Rings
A form of large ring (that is large enough to fit on a limb rather than a finger) that only appears in Israelite contexts has a catch to secure it in place, using a diamond-shaped end and a U-shaped end with upturned ends. Only four of these have been found, all made of a copper alloy, and all from the latter half of the Iron Age II (8th-7th centuries BCE)
This wearing of metal bracelets and anklets appears to be a holdover from Canaanite traditions, where we see depictions of goddesses wearing such items. That, their rarity, and idea that the innovation here is functional rather than aesthetic, are why I believe is why Golani doesn't consider this as a uniquely 'Israelite' jewelry form.
It should be noted here that these are not the only large rings found in the Israelite kingdoms, and evidence from graves indicate that both men and women wore single, solid metal arm-bands as jewelry. Women may have also worn multiple, simple, large rings as bangles as depicted in figurines (which to my chagrin told me nothing about hair, but I digress). This may be a local innovation by Southern Canaanites and Israelites, as the Phoenicians to the north are not depicted this way. Bangles were made of many materials; copper alloys, silver, gold, iron, and even shell.
(More common styles of large rings found in the Israelite kingdoms alongside the rare locking one above)
2.3 Earrings
The styles of earring Israelites used were innovations on earlier Canaanite styles, and were so numerous I'll just be showing archetypal forms and the uniquely Israelite ones, otherwise I might as well rewrite the whole book.
2.3.1 'Lunate Earrings'
These earrings are solid metal (usually silver or copper, but any nice metal works) with a crescent body, a bent and tapered hoop that is narrower than the body, and ends that usually meet at one side.
(Simple Lunate Earrings, found throughout the Ancient Near East)
The most common Israelite version of this earring, and indicative of the Iron Age II (our time period of interest), widens the lunate and rounds out the whole earring for a more robust, heavy design, often with a small rise in the center of the body
Towards the end of the Iron Age II, the hoop elongates and decorations such as wire wrapping or soldered hoops and globules appear on the lunate, and are made of exclusively expensive metals such as silver and gold.
A unique final example comes from the city of Lachish in the Shephelah of Judah from the 8th century BCE (Iron Age II). 'At least a dozen' lunate earrings were found in a corroded mass in a burial cave. at least one of these depicted the head and torso of a woman, but the corrosion of the pieces precluded further analysis.
2.3.2 Lunates with Fixed Attachments
A more ornamental variation on the lunate where the body has an attachment joined to it. The archetypal form of the attachment is that of a hollow ball, tear, or pear, and is further decorated with wiring or soldered globules. Much more detailed than the basic lunates, these seem to typically be made of nicer metals such as silver and gold.
These evolved from much simpler tear and globule attachments worn by Canaanites as early as the Middle Bronze Age.
There is an variant of these solid globule attachments that is common in the 8th - 7th centuries BCE with a ring of globules supporting a center orb, that I think is neat, but is kind of an evolutionary offshoot of the more ornate attachments.
Towards the end of the Iron Age II, elaborate attachments begin to appear, including clusters, rows, and pyramids (or even rows of pyramids!) of globules, as well as fans and the elaborate hollow examples above.
It should be noted that these more ornate forms of earrings are rare in Israelite society, the simple lunates and solid globule attatchment lunates were by far the most common forms of ear ornamentation.
Part 3: Conclusion
When looking at the more common pieces of jewelry among Israelites, bone pendants and copper alloy metal rings and earrings in relatively simple forms seem to be the most common items, despite the wealth of the kingdoms attested to by Assyrian records of what they looted during their invasions.
Additionally depictions of Israelites generally show them without jewelry (but that may be due to them being depicted by conquerors who took their jewelry, rather than by Israelites themselves).
So what's with this apparent aesthetic of austerity? According to Amir Golani, the Israelite kingdoms may not have been poor, but the Israelite Identity as separate from Canaanites possibly started as a rejection of the Canaanite City State culture of the Late Bronze Age, and a general distaste of luxury goods may have persisted through the development of the ethnicity to a more spartan aesthetic overall (this is not just seen in jewelry, Israelite pottery is basically earlier Canaanite forms, just undecorated, with some exceptions).
If you made it this far, congratulations! I hope this was as interesting to read as it was to look into, and thank you for your time.
