The post you reblogged about redemption arc, I know you're not the OP, but I just want to say that I think it's unfair to say that the view of the purity people hold about redemption & villains is a reflection to their worldview (I assume this is "real-word view", just like it's not true to say that our shipping reflects our real life view, or saying that since I like Peter Hale, that means I want a serial murderer getting forgiveness from everyone involved & live happily ever after

I think it’s also fair to note the the first three posters were specifically talking about fictional situations and fictional characters.  

But I think the fourth poster has a point as well. Because if the antis always say that we are Real Life horrible people for the things we like in fiction, then I don’t think it’s unreasonable to assume that they can’t (or won’t) differentiate between fiction and reality. 

It’s the antis who set the parameters here to begin with. If they say that we (the terrible, awful people who like violence and Bad Things in our fiction) must also like them in real life, then I think you’re being way too generous honestly in assuming they have the ability to differentiate. 

I mean, either they actually believe that fiction affects reality on a 1:1 basis, which is the parameters on which they judge others, or they don’t actually believe that and they’re hypocrites. 

Either way, they’re assholes. 

Slight sidetrack, but I also think there’s an important difference between a redemption arc and getting forgiveness from everyone involved and living happily ever after. A bad person (or character), or a person who has done bad things can still improve themselves without the necessity of forgiveness from those they’ve wronged. 

For a real life example, take someone like Megan Phelps-Roper. She spent years of her life spewing hate on behalf of the Westboro Baptist Church, both online as the voice behind their Twitter feed, and in person by picketing soldier’s funerals and all that other hateful stuff. And now… she’s renounced that hate. 

That doesn’t mean the families of the soldiers whose funerals she picketed, or the people she hurled abuse at in person or online have to forgive her. They are under absolutely no obligation to do that, but in spite of that she can still be a better person than she was. 

Or how about Abdel Nasser Ould Ethmane, a former slave owner who founded an organisation to end the practice of slavery in Mauritania? He is doing good works, but the people he once owned don’t need to forgive him in order for that to still be true. 

Or Frank Meeink, a former white supremacist who now speaks out against it. If the people he terrorised and victimised don’t forgive him, then that’s absolutely their right, but it doesn’t cancel out the good he’s now doing. 

Redemption doesn’t mean getting forgiveness or wiping the slate clean. It means doing better. 

Redemption and forgiveness aren’t the same thing at all, and neither should they be.

I have to keep reminding myself books 2 & 3 of this trilogy are a clusterfuck and that eventually Luke goes by himself at the end to face the Big Bad, ugh and ends up King of the Jedi when his gambit to unite the kids Master’s Council fails.

But Mara being Mara. Skywalker Extra (tm) and fucking BADASS TEAMWORK. This is all like right before the Real Fighting starts too.

First Mara being Mara. This is Luke getting all protective and Mara whatever-ing it like a boss (this is something that has precedent):

Mara flipped her StealthX up on edge and slipped between two ethmane pillars, then crashed through a curtain of frost and sent up a glittering cloud of ice particles. Luke ducked under a frozen arch, then shot ahead of Mara into the lead.

He offered his apologies through their Force-bond, along with an image of the loose stabilizer he had seen on her wing.

Whatever, she answered.

You guys, I think Denning has actually read some Zahn. Or at least had like the best intern. What the fuck happened to them? Did they go to grad school? Publish their first novel?

Moments of Skywalker Extra(tm)! A hisser, y’all, is a motherfucking air leak in a goddamn vac suit. 

“How’s that hisser?” Mara asked.

Luke checked the heads-up display inside his faceplate. He was down to just fifteen minutes of air, and the loss rate was increasing.

“Fine for now.”

He has fucking FIFTEEN MINUTES AND INCREASING LOSS RATE. Oh and they fucking blew up their X-Wings so they’re basically stuck down there with their vac suits. But he’s fine. Just totally chillin’. Like you are.
