Something very special about January taking himself SO seriously, and absolutely no one in town matching that energy
Let him take a nap - said everyone in town

"You, you have to do something- Do something- Do something! Artemis!"
"She’s already dead. And what could I do? It’s not like I have any control over my actions. It’s not like this was an accident; clearly this was just a lesson somebody had to learn."

Hello again, podcast side of Tumblr.
This time around, I did a video on Ethics Town, a relatively new cosmic horror podcast about a British valley town where nothing is quite as it seems. Right now Ethics Town is a terribly underrated series, so this video is both my analysis of it, and also my attempt at getting more people to listen to it.
Anyways, yeah, watch the video if you want, or not, it's up to you I guess. If you want to, though, I really do suggest you take the less than four hours and actually listen to the podcast, it's well worth your time.
SPOILERS FOR ETHICS TOWN SEASON ONE BEYOND THIS POINT. CONTINUE READING AT YOUR OWN RISK. / / / / / / / / / /
As with the last post, I also want to share the art from the video. For the first one, I wanted to do something that captured the feel of the Ethics Town logo, which is all black and white and red, so I stuck with a pretty monochromatic colour palette here. The image depicts the Mayor of Ethics, Ian Jacobs, moving the wrapped body of Natascha Flynn to make space for a nearby factory's planned expansions. It was one of two scenes I considered, and I think this was the much better option. The skyline in the background, while not perfect, is meant to mimic the same skyline seen on the Mayor's hat in the logo. The other weird detail here is that everything was done linelessly, which was very weird for me, because I thought it created an interesting look. Oh, also, yes, I did give Ian a ponytail.
Tumblr media
The other art piece is a sketch of Ian Jacobs and January Johnson, because I wanted to experiment with how much I could push their designs before they stopped looking like the same person. I also wanted to have their outfits at least be a little similar, so both of them have outer coverings closed around the middle of the chest around a shirt beneath, and both Ian and January have black headware. I considered giving January a white band on his headphones, but it just wound up getting lost. Another notable difference is in the hair, which I imagined here as blonde, probably in a more platinum direction, though you can't tell that very well from the greyscale. Ian's hair is pulled back in the aforementioned ponytail while it's left loose when he's acting as January. January also has a little more stubble, and his eye bags sag a little more. Finally, even though I only really had two colours to work with, I wanted to try expanding on how he acts within each role using the clothing. January's clothes are lighter, thanks in big part to the grey and white striped hoodie, which is designed to make him seem more emotionally truthful than he actually is. Underneath that light tone, though, is a plain black tee, which ties him to the darker colour scheme of Ian and also hints at the fact that, below his friendly and approachable personality hides the dark secret that he is, in fact, the Mayor who has been making such terrible decisions. Going back to the sweatshirt, the grey and white striping is also slightly reminiscent of the stripes on prison jumpsuits, which is a way of representing his feeling of being trapped into bad decisions and being ensnared by Ethics and his secret role as Mayor. Speaking of the Mayor, Ian is a lot simpler. I considered giving him a big, slightly cartoon-y MAYOR sash, but I wound up preferring how he looks without it. Generally, I tried to keep his wardrobe darker and more formal, and, of course, I had to include the fancy hat we see on the logo of Ethics Town. I also reduced the amount of vape cloud around him for two reasons. First, the in-story reason, is that Ian has accepted who he is and the role he plays in the "narrative" of Ethics, so I imagine he's a bit less stressed. It also works really well metaphorically, though, because he's not disguised anymore. When we see Ian at the end of "The Identity Issue," the mask is fully off. Artemis knows exactly who he is, which means that his identity doesn't have to be clouded by as much smoke. Oh, also, it's a cosmic horror podcast, so if I didn't put something tentacle-esque around the main antagonist, there would be problems.
Tumblr media
And I think that about covers it. I had a lot of fun listening to the podcast and making the video, and I hope it can bring joy to y'all as well. Catch y'all next time around for The Buried Explained!

ETHICS TOWN SPOILERS UP TO EPISODE "History is written By...Who?"
Turned out longer than I intended and I didn't even add everything I wanted to say.
Romulus (love that choice of name), once he travelled back in time, is just a copy of the Romulus of his current present, placed in the past. So, a clone, you could say.
In his original future, Ethics Town was founded by a Richard, and he waited for a Richard to turn up and do it in the past he placed himself in. There's none. So he, Romulus (now Ryan), founds Ethics Town.
Is this the point were he changed the story or was it once he arrived in that time? Is this past a copy of the other one? Like when you have a word document, which we now call "History" and you save a copy of that document, you have "History Copy 1". Now, on your computer, tablet, phone, whatever, you can change "History Copy 1" into anything you want without altering "History". You all know how word and file saving works. I am sure.
My point is, did Romulus create a copy of the history? He said it himself, Ryan is not Romulus. They aren't one "continued consciousness." Is this what happened to the others? Is this the reason why Ian and Artemis have memories that they seemingly just made up? Because they have the memories and desires of Ian and Artemis from the other history. Is this why they are doomed by the narrative - because it's already written?
I'm pretty sure I am wrong because there are more things worth analysing, like the parallels between Ryan and January (I've read the tags on my other post - they are based on the same guy! That's so cool).
(Is Ian the Remus to Ryan being Romulus? Ian is from a neighbouring town, and Remus hopped over the small wall when they first started building Rome).
Is it ethical to jump back in time to change something? Even if you just want to experience life there, you change history.
Does anything of this post make sense to anyone else besides me?
I love media that lets me analyse and theorise. I know I have a tendency to see clues where there aren't any ("turning it into a mystery that needed solving"), but it's fun nonetheless to see what I can come up with and if anything is true in the end. Anyway, I look forward to more of Ethics Town.
Wait, does that mean the town will be flooded at the end of this podcast?
This is how I feel:
Tumblr media
Good gods, I just googled something and found out something else. Why can't I stop?
I should probably reblog this post and continue there.

hi so i finally listened to the new ep of ethics town and
whatthefuckwhatthefuckwhatthefuckwhatthefuckwhatthefuckwhatthefuckwhatthefuckwhatthefuckwhatthefuckwhatthefuckwhatthefuckwhatthefuckwhatthefuckwhatthefuckwhatthefuckwhatthefuckwhatthefuckwhatthefuckwhatthefuckwhatthefuckwhatthefuckwhatthefuckwhatthefuckwhatthefuckwhatthefuck!
major spoilers under the cut because i have been replaying the episode especially the last scene on loop for over an hour now and i might implode if i don’t talk about it
ok so first off i’ll get the to the big thing in a bit but just the whole vibe of the town?? the identical houses?? was just so unsettling like what is this a domain of the lonely??
and the building dread i felt as people didn’t know who january was that led up to the big reveal,,
also shoutout to liz’s performance this episode because my god did it make me feel things, the way artemis broke down,, wth man
look i was prepared for artemis finding out about her mum BUT GOD DID IT HURT
and then when she found the picture of the mayor,, hell i was internally screaming please no
WHAT DO YOU MEAN JANUARY IS THE MAYOR
THE PIECES WERE ALL THERE BUT WTF??
HES the one that killed artemis’ mum??
so what were the broadcasts for? to try and clear his conscience? project out his self hatred?? some much more fucked up thing???
maybe it’s some kind of jekyll and hyde situation because otherwise ian is one HELL of an actor
there has to be some sort of explanation i cant do this
AND THE LAST SCENE,, JANUARY’S(?) IAN’S(?) VOICE??
i am begging for answers next episode because i have so many thoughts but none of them are expressible through words and most are my internal monologue going “whatthefuckwhatthefuck” over and over
thanks louis great episode it one shot killed me

Listened to the Ethics Town finale yesterday and oh my god!! Artemis!! Everyone becomes mayor because they think they can do better, but they never can, because it's not the person in charge that's the problem, it's the system itself!! It's a violent cycle, what's seen as old and outdated and wrong is pushed out and replaced by what is seen as new and positive and right!!! But without a drastic change to the fundamentals of the system, nothing can change in any way that matters!!!! It's an ouroboros of politics and morality and ethics!!!!! You've got to bite off your own tail to make things better!!!!!! Oh my god they can't hear me, they're all just characters in a story and they know it!!!!!!

oh OH THE PAUSE FOR THE OPENING MUSIC TO PLAY BEING COMMENTED ON IN THANATOLOGY OH THATS SO CLEVER
(spoilers for episode 8 under cut)
I USED TO THINK IT WAS JUST "oh what a funny silly little joke" BUT OH BOY OH BOY THAT PROBABLY ALSO FED INTO IAN'S PARANOIA AND WAS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT BUILT UP TO THE REALISATION THAT HE'S A CHARACTER (and that's Looking at it from his perspective, imagining him as real rather than as a fictional character who was just written to think he's fictional)

Audio Drama Sunday - 22nd September ✨
I’ve been so unwell this week, it feels like I’ve barely listened to anything! I was very grateful for the pods that saw me through!
🌲 @hellofromthehallowoods (168) oooOOOH my GoD. All my locked tomb readers MUST be shouting the same name I am shouting. They must be.
🧳 Travelling Light @monstrousproductions (33) SO thrilled to have travelling light back in my ears, even despite the heartbreak of losing my fave. I loved Duytren’s tale of compulsory monogamy and the gentle reminder that platonic relationships are just as important as romantic ones - are you listening, Traveller?
🧋 @hinaypod (19) I always forget that Mari can just … astrally project. It’s so useful, honestly. Cannibals in the hospital is such a nasty concept (compliment). I’m so pumped for this camping trip! I’m sure nothing at all is going to go wrong!
🦋 @remnantspod (10) oh my heart!! It’s fascinating to see part of this story from a different perspective. I feel like there’s something going on with the way people are dying (a striking number of blows to the head, no? If you’ll excuse the pun) a lá More Than This by Patrick Ness. There’s just so many layers in this show!
🎩  @ethicstownpod (Ship’s Theseus) oh, Ian… that’s just… it’s just not very good, is it? I’m actually a little surprised the surgery didn’t work… hopefully we’ll find out why sometime soon.
Rest well and have a good week 🥰

Hey Lords of Fortune, mind explaining why you have a pile of disposed corpses in a not so secret corner of your base. And mind explaining why they're members of all the other factions. Whenever you've got a moment. Thanks for your time.
