#HARPERSMOVIECOLLECTION
2024 MOVIE LIST
www.tumblr.com/theharpermovieblog
I watched Etheria Film Night (2024)
Someone special told me to watch this one, so I dove on in.
A collection of short horror films from the Etheria Film Night.
"Etheria Film Night" is a Las Angeles film festival that showcases genre films created by female filmmakers. As we all know, female filmmakers have long been forgotten or ignored, so it's nice to see that festivals like this exist, especially because it is particularly for genre films...the best kind of films 😉
The 2024 collection features 9 films, so I'll go one by one,
TOOTH, Directed by Jillian Corsie: It's short, it's gross, it's fun. A woman gets attacked by her teeth, not much else to say. I liked this a lot and it was a great way to start an anthology film, incorporating a lot of the tonal shifts that were to come. Funny, creepy, gross, interesting.
THE THAW Directed by Sarah Wisner and Sean Temple: Decent folk horror about parents being buried alive, as a way to survive through the winter months. This one is a pretty good tension builder. Acting is iffy, but not bad. Pretty well made and interesting.
1 IN THE CHAMBER Directed by Annie Girard and Diana Wright: An action comedy spy story. One female assassin goes to kill the other, who is pregnant. The fight isn't all that great, but a few jokes work. I didn't love it but found it endearing enough.
TEN OF SWORDS Directed by Faye Jackson: Zombies are used as worker drones in a play on the struggle of soulless jobs and empty lives. It actually brings new ideas to the zombie genre, which is nice to see. A bit cheap feeling and it deviates from its point while getting confused by it's own lore, but overall interesting enough.
RIDE BABY RIDE Directed by Sofie Somoroff: A well shot possessed car story. Where as "Christine" was about a boy falling in love with his jealous girlfriend of a car, this is about a woman being assaulted by her Camaro. Too short and I wanted more from it, but what is there is really well made.
MAKE ME A PIZZA Directed by Talia Shea Levin: A satire of old pornos, complete with cheap and dated production quality, and it all centers around a pizza delivery. It's and absurdist and comedic gross-out teetering on body-horror. As a fan of old "Adult Swim" weirdness, I liked this one.
THE SHADOW WRANGLER Directed by Grace Rex: Decent acting and ok written dialogue, in a story about a woman being overwhelmed while recording an audiobook for a sexual Western novel. It held my interest, if it did feel a bit aimless at points.
INKED Directed by Kelsey Bollig: Slow to start and a little too cliche for my tastes. It's not poorly directed, but the whole thing feels a bit soulless. Hollywood has put out a lot of generic Horror like this. It has nothing original going on and nothing interesting to say. I appreciate the work that went into it, and some of the horror stuff is effective, but I was bored.
MLM Directed by Brea Grant: First off, horror legend Barbara Crampton has a cameo, I'm already on board. Secondly it's taking a swipe at the horrible world of Multi Level Marketing scams and I'm here for it. This is a horror/comedy with some original and out of the box ideas. It works. It's a fun little movie that doesn't take itself too seriously. Good acting, good directing, an axe murderer in leggings shows up. What's not to like?
HOW DOES IT ALL WORK AS AN ANTHOLOGY/COLLECTION?: This is a pretty good collection of shorts. Unlike most anthology films, these stories are not connected by any wrap-around segments. You just get the short films like if you were to sit through the actual film festivale. What it does have in common with most other anthology films, is that the stories vary in quality. Luckily, these shorts are mostly all good enough to justify sitting through them as a collection.
Watching with friends and critiquing them as they go by would be a fun night in.

Etheria Film Festival 2020 on Shudder #EtheriaFN
"Stunning, beautiful and intense" check out @ELJBrandt @brianlindenmuth's review and thoughts on Etheria Film Festival 2020 on Shudder #EtheriaFN #EtheriFilmNight #Etheria2020
I am thrilled that I got to experience Etheria this year. I’d never heard of it before (to my detriment), most likely because it’s located in a physical place. Like Brian, I’m hoping that the streaming numbers are good enough for them (and other film festivals) to consider doing this regularly as well as their physical festivals.
I love horror shorts, to me, they’re the film equivalent of a…
