Lilly shifted her gaze back up to Zero. “I always thought that astral projecting meant disconnecting the soul from the body for a while, or something similar.” she expressed her confusion, to be honest she didn’t really know anything about that ability so she asked, “How does astral projection work?” Zero tilted their head, as if in thought, “That is hard to explain, but your understanding is actually close.”

“When astral projecting your mind leaves your body, to wander the world free from it’s mortal form.” Zero explained, “Your soul can only disconnect from your body once you die, but since the mind is close to the soul, it feels similar.” Lilly thought about what Zero was implying. “So you mean that what I’m experiencing right now is similar to being dead?” she questioned. Zero just nodded.

Lilly let that sink in for a while, she had thought information like that would be scarier to comprehend. Staring off into the distance she began to voice her thoughts, “You know, I always thought death would be scarier. Or more unpleasant. This doesn’t feel bad, in fact it feels really warm. Safe even. If this is what death is like, …” She didn’t know how to finish that thought, but suddenly the pain over Flares death stung a lot less. Maybe he really was in a better place now.

As these warm thoughts still floated through Lilly’s mind a second feeling joined them. This one though was physical and she knew it well. Last she had felt this all these years ago in Eterna Forest when her own dad had brought her to the Moss Rock. And even though she was still astral projecting she could feel the changes to her body. Her astral self too, was lifted of the ground as the evolution happened.

When she landed back on her feet, for the first time in months or even years she felt like herself. The sorrow and pain that had accompanied her ever since the clan had been destroyed were gone and she only felt calm and happiness. Zero next to her had turned and glanced at her surprised, “Well, that is new.” he mentioned, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen that evolution though.” he added.

Lilly turned to inspect her body, but she didn’t recognize the form either. “You wouldn’t happen to have a mirror or something?” she asked the god by her side. Zero shook her head, but pointed to a small pond near them. Lilly walked over to it to look at her reflection. “Strange,” she mentioned, “I’ve also never seen such an Eeveelution before.”

They both fell silent after that. Some time passed then Zero spoke up, “You feel very different now and I don’t just mean the Type change.” Lilly tilted her head, what did her mean. “Your soul felt dark and lifeless before, but now it’s warm like its supposed to be.” the god clarified. Lilly smiled, that sounded about right. “A big burden was just lifted of my shoulders, that’s probably why.” she replied.

Zeros eyes narrowed. “Correct me if I’m wrong,” he began, “But a loved one of yours died, right? And you blamed yourself, you thought because of you they’re gone. Hurting even.” He paused, but when Lilly didn’t deny his claims he continued, “But because of this experience and our meeting you realized that, -” “That they’re not suffering.” Lilly finished his sentence. Zero nodded.

After a while he spoke again, “I don’t meat Pokemon like you often. You seem to posses great compassion and you also seem to have a knack for the spiritual. Not many can Astral project, let alone manage it without prior training.” Lilly glanced over, what were they getting at. “Is that a good or a bad thing?” she inquired carefully. “A very good one.” Zero came back immediately.

Lilly mustered her, “And?” she inquired. It felt like Zero wanted to imply something more. The god took a deep breath. “I usually only ask this of Pokemon who already lived their lives, that died and moved on to the afterlife. …” they began, “But, a find like you is so rare. I have to ask.” Lilly perked up, she knew something big was coming and tried to brace her self. But what the god said next still stunned her.

Zero stood up and extended a paw towards her. “Lilly of the Eevee Clan. Partner of Flare, loving Mother of Dune, I want to offer you the mantel of a reaper. Will you join our ranks and help Anima guide lost souls to the afterlife? As to this day I have rarely met a soul more suited for this power then you are.” his voice echoed through the vast forests and deep into the Ethereal realm. And every spirit that heard it was suddenly drawn to her location.

Lilly could feel them gathering, as she tried to process what they had just offered her. “I, …” she stammered “Are you, … do you want me to…? You want to give me some of Animas Power?!”

Dunes thoughts spun around her head. This was to much to take in all at once and she didn’t really understand it either. What did her mother mean, she’s outside the cycle? What even is this cycle. But the only thing she could whisper was, “How do you know all this? … What happened since we last saw each other?”

Lilly sighed, “I guess I should tell you, … you have the right to know.” she looked into the distance, her eyes clouded with heavy memories. Then she began, “You know how everything started, on that fateful day almost 5 years ago, … when that cursed hollow attacked our clan.” she paused, “I remember it attacking you and me jumping in to save you. Then everything went black.”

Dune and Flake sat in silence as Lilly told her story. When she woke up after the fight, everyone had left, she didn’t know if they had survived. She and Flare had been buried by falling debris, she had only survived because she was a Grass-type. Dunes dad hadn’t been as lucky. After that she wandered the land trying to find her clan until she stumbled into a void breach. There she broke down, from how hopeless everything seemed.

“When I woke up after that episode I noticed that I had devolved back into an Eevee.” she told. She smiled, but Dune could see the sorrow in her gaze. “Back then I didn’t understand how that happened, but I learned about it later. I must have wished to go back to my childhood days and the Void interpreted that as wanting to go back to an Eevee. Anyways this is where I think this story really starts.” She continued her story.

The Eevee had once again found herself in a strange place. Why had she stepped into another of these spacial Anomalies, she thought to herself, one would think the last time had taught her a lesson. But alas. At least this one looked a lot nicer than the last. That one had been nothing but a black void, but here there were trees and flowers. She had even seen a few Pokemon, though only briefly.

She even thought this place had a strange beauty to it. The only weird thing was that it was still nighttime. She could have sworn that it should be day by now. A shiver went down her spine as she remembered the day of the second cataclysm, or the day with out sun as it was also called. A fitting name, she thought. Then she looked behind, she couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched.

She decided to call out to her potential follower, “Hello, … is someone there? Please show yourself.” She heard a chuckle, a voice called out from behind the trees, “Well aren’t you a brave one,” it said, “a piece of advice though. It’s not wise to call out to the spirits, you could get their attention.” The Eevee shuddered. What an ominous warning.

As she still watched the trees the speaker decided to reveal themselves. A big Meowscarada stepped out into the open, and scanned the Eevee. She stared right back and mustered the newcomer. They had a strange color for a Meowscarada, like dead leafs in the winter, but most unnerving they were carrying a big scythe on their shoulder. The Eevee took a nervous step back. The stranger smiled.

“So now you’re scared? A bit late if you ask me.” he chuckled. His voice was somewhat echoing, but it was the most soothing sound she had ever heard. She calmed down immediately, but still kept her distance. Then the Meowscarada dispelled it’s scythe and sat down on the ground. “Now there is now need to fear me young one, I would never harm a living creature.” he reassured and the Eevee was ready to believe him.

She slowly stepped closer. The Meowscarada watched, “Say, this is a strange place for any Pokemon. Would you mind telling me how you got here young one? Also do you have a name?” it asked. “My name is Lilly.“ the Eevee replied, “And I’m not young, I’m 31”. Now the Meowscarada laughed, “That Is young, young one. Also Lilly is a nice name it suits you.”

Lilly scoffed, “Well how old are you then, Mr. condescending?” He smirked back, “As of this year I’m twelve thousand three hundred and forty five, but I think I look no older then 1000.” Lilly stopped in shock, “Wha.., but how. …Who are you?” “I guess I haven’t introduced myself yet. I am Zero, Champion of Anima, Guardian of the cycle and first Reaper. Pleased to make you acquaintance.”

Lilly stared in disbelieve, she had heard stories about them, Kuro liked to research to old legends, but never had she thought she would one day come face to face with a real god. “You mean Anima, as in the Goddess of death and Rebirth?” She asked. “The very one.” Zero answered. “Which brings me back to my first question, how did you get here? The living are not supposed to be able to enter this plane without dying.”

He paused and fixated Lilly with concern in his eyes, “And you seem still very alive to me.”

Dune laid next to Kuro and watched him worried. After the battle her Mom had brought them all to this grove deep in the forest. She said it was save and something about magical barriers. Dune was worried. With the exception of her and Flake none of her friends had woken up since the battle. She knew they were hurt badly, but still they has to recover sometime right.

Dune put her head on her partner side and listened, his heartbeat and breath were so weak. She called out, “Mom, he doesn’t seem to get better at all. What if he’s dying?” she said. Her mom, who was currently checking on Shooting Star turned to her. She smiled, “Don’t worry sweety, he’s still weak but he’ll get better.”

Dune was to scared to leave it at that, “How can you know? To me he doesn’t look like hes recovering.” Her moms eyes drifted to the far and she suddenly looked incredibly sad, “I know because I’m a reaper. It’s my job to guide lost souls to the after life, if he was dying I could tell in a glance, that way I could stay to make sure his soul passes on after the fact.”

Dune thought about that for a while. “What is a ‘reaper’. The hollow mentioned that two, but I never heard of such a Pokemon.” for a moment her mom seemed lost in thought again, then she answered, “That’s because Reaper isn’t a Pokemon but more of a job description. We are the champions of Anima, goddess of death and rebirth. And we help her with her job of keeping the cycle stable, by guiding souls that can’t reach the afterlife on their own.”

A thought popped into Dunes head, “But if that’s true, what about Ghost-type Pokemon. I thought those came from souls that couldn’t move on” Her mom nodded, “Well yes, that is true. However not every lost soul turns into a ghost, but sometimes we don’t get to them in time. And additionally Ghost-types don’t go against the cycle. They’re a natural way of reintegrating lost soul into the cycle.”

“You’re a Ghost-type now right,” Dune asked, “does that mean you died at some point?” Now her mom smiled again, “No, I simply evolved. You see after the attack on the clan, I stumbled into a Void breach, which made me de-evolve back into an Eevee. Then later I evolve again, but this time into the Ethereon I am now.”

At this point Flake entered the grove. He looked around, then fixated the Ethereon, “Lilly? Have Dad and aunty Kiara still not woken up?.” he asked shyly. Lilly smiled back at him, “Oh, Flake. I told you you can call me grandma if you like.” she paused, “But no, unfortunately they are still asleep.” Flake looked away, “Oh, ok.” then he looked embarrassed, “And you don’t look that old to me, it doesn’t feel right to call you grama.” he whispered.

Dune smiled at her son, he was so cute sometimes. Honestly, if it weren’t for him she might have gone mad with worry a while ago. Which reminded her of Kuro, she wasn’t quite convinced of what her mom had said. After all, she had been hurt probably just as bad, but she was back on her feet already. She said as much to Lilly, but she froze up as she said that and tear welled up in her eyes.

Dune was shocked at that reaction, “Mom?” she asked, “Did I say something wrong?” Lilly shock her head, “You just reminded me of something unpleasant.” she caught her gaze, “You’re fine, because short of destroying you body or killing Shooting Star, there isn’t much that could kill you right now.” She paused, the continued, “After all, you can’t really kill what’s already dead, right?”

Now it was Dunes time to freeze. Flake as well looked shocked, “But, … Mom is alive right?” Lilly shook her head, “Only in the spiritual sence.” she looked Dune directly in the eye, “You probably haven’t noticed, since you were so worried for Kuro. But since the battle with the hollows, your heart hasn’t beaten even once and you only breath when you want to speak.”

Dune didn’t know what to say, she caught Flakes gaze, he wispered, “I thought it was just to weak to hear.” He looked at his Grandma, “But the how can she …?” he clearly didn’t know how to finish that sentence. But apparently Lilly had understood him anyways. “It’ impossible to bring a Pokemon back to life. Only Anima could pull of such a feat. What Seraphore did was bringing back her soul and then binding it with their own life force. Later that was replaced by Stars. She isn’t living on her own Energy right now, if she were she would have succumbed to her wound a long time ago. She lives because of Stars energy and if he were to die, so would she.”

She paused and looked at Dune with a deep sadness in her eyes and said, “Unlike Ghost-types, you are outside of the cycle right now. That’s the only reason I found you.”

I'M BACK. Finally, how can one move take this long?

Then again, I would have posted last week, but unfortunatlymy sceen broke right after the move and the only replacement was on the other side of the contry with my parents.

Well now it's with me and I can finally work on this series again. Oh how I missed that.

Now we should mostly return to schedule, with a short break between christmas and new years.

Anyway, Chapter 4 now beginns for real and as the Title suggests this one will dwell a lot on past event's. There will be a few big lore drops, probably and we shall learn what happend to Lilly the now Ethereon, between this Chapter and the prolouge.
