If you're planning to travel soon, don't risk your journey without reading these 10 tips that will transform your experience from just a trip into an unforgettable adventure
Tip 1: Choose Your Destination Carefully
Select your destination based on your personal interests. Do you love nature? Or perhaps history? Or modern cities? Finding the right destination ensures you'll enjoy your trip even more.

Tip 2: Plan Your Budget
Never travel without setting a clear budget. Consider costs for flights, accommodation, food, and activities. Remember, a budget isn't just about spending money—it's about managing it wisely.

Tip 8: Choose Smart Transportation Options

Quinton was no stranger to wealth or the finer things in life. He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Quinton hailed from a lineage he could directly trace back to JP Morgan, and his entire family acted like the tycoons they hailed from. Well, the entire family aside from his branch. Quinton, the only child, was part of a very tight knit family that valued philanthropy through their wealth. They prescribed to the mantra of “success with a servants heart” and spent most of their time trying to use their money and power to make the world a little better of a place.
His childhood was riddled with mission trips, traveling extensively and living on the same budget as the people they were serving to gain perspective. His father taught him how to be a good man, and his mother taught him how to be a caring and open person. All of that changed one snowy afternoon when his parent’s private propeller plane crashed into the fields of rural Iowa on a speedy trip to help some folks in their network. They had left Quinton with relatives on the notion that it was a short flight.
What happened next was textbook. He fell on the responsible shoulders of his uncle and their family. Younger siblings to his own parents, they treated money in a more vicious manner. He went to a private school. Slowly, his previous ways of life were chipped away at. It was a gradual pace. Quinton had hit puberty early, and without the guidance of his parents. it wasn’t long until the tabloids knew who he was. He was a regular item on page six, brushing shoulders with people exactly at his station. When he joined Instagram, he amassed over five million followers in two days.
Despite having all the money in the world, and a lifestyle most people would envy, Quinton had no idea what we wanted to do. Philanthropy was the thing that killed his parents, and was seen as a necessity among his relatives. He wanted to start a nonprofit, and become something true to who he used to be, the legacy his parents left, but he instead fell into the internet era — becoming famous on YouTube and Instagram for his nightlife guides. The money from this content, and paid sponsors quickly made him realize that he was a promoter of some sort. He was envied by men, lusted after by women, he was golden just like he always was. It was easy to slip into old habits.
That old habit was an on and off girlfriend. They were extremely public when they were on and extremely public when they were off. They quickly became known for their fighting, break ups, drama, and then big romantic gestures. However, pressure grew from his family to do something real. That was when he decided to open Illusion. Illusion was everything the night life world craved. It skyrocketed to one of the best places to party in the city. He was on the up and up, it seemed.
All good things end. And that was the case with his second club that he planned to open in Miami six months ago. Drama hit a new high when a sex tape of his girlfriend was leaked on the big screen of the club opening. Which fueled a massive and very public fight between the two. Quinton went home with her best friend and she never made it home. He found out in the morning that his girlfriend had gotten into a car accident and died on the site while attempting to drive to his hotel. A hotel he wasn’t at.
P R E S E N T →
After the accident, Quinton dropped off the map for a month. The second club in Miami Quinton sold for a quick couple million. He was happy to wipe his hands of it and that night. When he returned to social media and the city, he returned with a bang. He threw a party to die for with A-Listers and no holes barred. Secrets were kept from that night but the photos that leaked to the press, quite purposefully, made the event to die for.
Illusion is his main club that he owns and oversees. He still maintains a massive following and often flies and parties. If anything, his party lifestyle has sped up since the accident. Where once he said that he promoted to make money, show people a good time, and make connections, he knows now that he’s doing it for the thrill to party lately. He’s been taking more risks lately, including dabbling in a society that allows his true visions for the club to come true — full debauchery at every aspect.
He’s started to take a step in. And he likes what he sees. Illusion has become a place for drugs, women, and Quinton? He’s the ringmaster of the most fabulous parties there ever was. He’d never admit he’s in too deep. He’d never admit that he’s hoping to really fuck himself. He’s not looking for redemption. He’s looking to die young. Which might be easy, because he’s been hiding a secret – his blackouts are getting worse and worse. He suspects what the route of the problem is, but avoids getting actual help for it, caught in this loophole of ‘it’ll save me some money and time to die that way’ and ‘it’s probably fine’. It isn’t though, because every so often he can feel the pounding in his chest, the light feeling of his fingers, even when he’s sober.

Days 1-2: Tokyo, Revisited
On my last trip to Japan, to save money, I opted for a 22 hour series of connecting flights from Boston to Zurich, and then Zurich to Tokyo. For an additional 8 hours of airtime, I saved about $200. When booking this trip, I didn't make that mistake again.
My journey began roughly two days ago, with a 13-hour direct flight from Boston-Logan to Tokyo-Narita on Japan Airlines. I can't put my finger on it, but there's a very distinct "Japan smell," and I instantly smelled it upon getting onto the plane. Somewhere between "clean" and "foreign." As I sat down in my seat, a whole wave of sensory memories came flooding back to me.
The flight was uneventful, which is, of course, what you want in a flight, and filled with little Japanese details. Before takeoff, the flight crew announced that turbulence was expected on the route, but it only amounted to a few small bumpy sections. Perhaps this was just Japan's culture of risk-aversion at work, though: better to prime people to expect turbulence and not get any than the other way around. Also, every seatback TV screen had some kind of holographic coating, so that it's impossible to see what other people are watching unless you're looking at the screen head-on. They love their privacy, the Japanese.
Over the course of our 13-hour trip, we passed over my hometown, as well as Montreal and Alaska. I always forget about Alaska; this crazy massive chunk of land 1/3 the size of the lower 48 states just perched up at the top of the continent. Over the Gates of the Arctic National Park, the views were so arresting that I spent about an hour with my eyes glued to the window.
Another highlight of the flight: apparently, Japan Airlines has a series of inflight informational videos about all of their destinations. About 8 hours into the trip I discovered their video about Boston, and it's one of the most unintentionally hilarious things I've ever seen, for reasons I can't really articulate.
We landed in Narita at around 4:50 Japan time, almost 4 am EST. From there, it was a race against the clock to get to my hotel, check-in, and pass out. Right now, in Japan, the sun rises at around 6 am and sets at about 5:30, so by the time I got out of the airport, it was nighttime. After a 1-hour high-speed train trip into Tokyo proper and about 10 minutes on the subway, I arrived at my hotel.
On this trip, I decided to do myself a favor and get a proper hotel room. While capsule hotel-ing was fun last time, on this trip, I'm older, wiser, have a little more disposable income, and wanted my own bathroom. I’m staying at the MyStays Kanda, a part of the same chain as my favorite capsule hotel from the last trip. The room is small, but still offers a full-sized bed, a bathroom with a tub and a shower, a table, a chair, and a little closet/storage space for clothes and shoes. After unpacking all of my things and showering, I fell asleep.
Jet lag is a funny thing. It's basically the human body being unable to comprehend the concept of modern high-speed travel. A trip that used to take half a year now takes half a day, and everyone's brains are still trying to process that. Mine very much included.
On my first night in Tokyo, I slept from around 8 pm to 1:30 am. Not great, but not terrible. After trying and failing to sleep for another 3 hours, I got up and went for a walk.
My first official meal in Japan was a visit to an old favorite from the last trip, Yoshinoya, a chain restaurant specializing in beef and rice bowls. They have locations in California, so those of you reading this on the west coast would do wise to appreciate that. I started with a Kalbi Beef bowl, immediately followed by a small can of BOSS-brand coffee from a vending machine outside.
Ah, Japan.
After breakfast, I walked over to the Imperial Palace. Japan is the only country on Earth that has an Emperor as their head of state, and frankly, that's a huge vibe. Something about "emperor" as opposed to "king" or "prince" or "duke," it carries so much gravitas. Only Japan can still pull something like that off.
The Imperial Palace has been the residence of the Emperor since 1868 and occupies a huge chunk of downtown Tokyo. Situated on a walled island in the middle of the city, it's not hard to miss. Of course, being an official state residence, I wasn't able to go inside, so I settled for walking around the perimeter of the moat.
After that, I hopped on the subway over to Akihabara, a favorite spot from my last trip. Akihabara is Tokyo's gaming and Anime mecca. If it's weird and Japanese, you can find it there. The people-watching is world-class.
The contrast between the Imperial Palace and Akihabara is about as good a metaphor for Japan as I can try to come up with. It's a country that's at once hypermodern and steeped in millennia of distinct traditions, culture, and history. There's simply no other place on Earth like it, and as you can tell, I'm a big fan.
It was still around 7 am at this point, so there weren't many things open in Akihabara, and I headed back to my hotel.
Later that morning, I took the subway over to Harajuku, another favorite spot. What Akihabara is to gaming and anime, Harajuku is to fashion. Alongside the likes of Milan, Paris and New York, it's widely recognized as one of the world's fashion hubs, and you see it when you walk around there. People look like they've just stepped off a runway.
In Italian, they have a word for people who look cool without looking like they're trying to look cool: sprezzatura. "Studied carelessness." The kind of guy who just happens to be wearing a suit and a pocket square to go get coffee and have a cigarette on a Tuesday morning in Rome. There is no such word in Japanese: when it comes to fashion, people here try hard, and most of the time, they pull it off.
After several hours of walking, people watching and window shopping, I stopped into a little hole-in-the-wall whose name escapes me for some noodles, served cold alongside a bowl of fiery broth. You dip the noodles in the broth, but don't let them touch otherwise. Not to be confused with ramen or udon, noodles that arrive in broth. Very different.
From there, I headed over to Ikebukuro to the Evangelion Store. Evangelion is one of my favorite shows of all time, and there's only one store that sells officially licensed merchandise from it. Naturally, I had to go back since I'm here.
Throughout my day, I kept having little moments that reminded me of what drew me to Japan in the first place. There’s a thoughtfulness that goes into everything here that I haven’t seen in many other places. It may still be me looking at the place with rose-colored glasses, but nevertheless. It’s really something.
With merch acquired, still running on about 5 hours of sleep, I headed back to my hotel to relax. I managed to remain awake until around 10 pm, and slept until about 4:45 this morning. For my 6.5 hours of bed-time, I logged about 4.5 hours of sleep, according to the sleep-tracking app on my phone. Again, not great, but not terrible for night two in the polar opposite of my normal timezone. Stay tuned for more!

Gaming Hotels, Money & Nebula
Hello, welcome, and G’day, we are so happy to have you join us again for our latest episode. When we say episode we don’t mean Buck having a rant and all that; just thought we should clarify that up front. Now we have a bumper episode this week with lots of stuff for you to enjoy.
First up we have Professor bringing us news about Atari’s plan to open a chain of hotels. They have announced that they will be themed and focus on developing E-sports functionality. But we wonder is it going to be presented with the old style timber/brown laminate like we used to see on the old Atari? Guarantee that it won’t be the first option for the honeymoon market, although, any ladies who think that would be cool let us know that we are wrong once again. Following this Professor has the ESA’s environmentally unfriendly stance against the right to repair and modify your machines/consoles. BOO HISS!!! How lame can these idiots be, I mean, don’t they realise that advancements in technology have come about by people looking under the hood and figuring out ways to do things better?
Next up we have DJ talking about IDW losing money and what they are planning to do about it. Apparently they have announced they are struggling in various markets with the material they are presently distributing. Of course the solution would be to develop new material, breathe new life into the company instead of just pumping out more of the same thing. But, no, they are hoping that their partnership with Netflix will save them. Then DJ brings us news on the critic’s reviews on Birds of Prey for us to laugh at and make fun of. Seriously, does anyone actually take them serious anymore? Buck suggests that if Rotten Tomatoes give a film a bad rating it must be good, and if it is good then stay away. What do you think, does that sound like a good approach to use?
Then Buck has the latest on the Spitzer Space Telescope, which has just retired. After being on mission since 2003 it has provided heaps of data for scientist, with the first images and data being of the Tarantula Nebula. In homage to its origins the last images and data developed by Spitzer were also of the Tarantula Nebula. Which honestly is a hotbed of activity, with the explosion of a supernova that was first discovered in 1987 (interestingly called 1987a) and still sweeping through space creating some awesome images. Also there is a collection of 40 massive stars at least 50 times the size of our sun all in a tiny area together. If this isn’t enough for you Buck also brings us news of the latest evolution of robot tanks. Before anyone gets all Terminator Judgement Day on us, they are not all armed and those that are still need a person involved to fire on a target. But for those who are looking for an alternative to a trailer that hitches to your car, we might have a solution for you.
We hope you enjoy this bumper episode this week. As normal we have the usual shout outs, remembrances, birthdays, and special events. Let us know what you think, make requests if you have a topic you are interested in having us dig into. Or just drop us a line and we will give you a special shout out. As always, remember to take care of yourselves, look out for each other and stay hydrated.

Jerome Siegel who also used pseudonyms including Joe Carter and Jerry Ess was an American comic book writer. His most famous creation was Superman, which he created in collaboration with his friend Joe Shuster. Siegel and Shuster had been developing the Superman story and character since 1933, hoping to sell it as a syndicated newspaper comic-strip. But after years of fruitless soliciting to the syndicates, Siegel and Shuster agreed to publish Superman in a comic book. In March 1938, they sold all rights to Superman to the comic-book publisher Detective Comics, Inc., another forerunner of DC, for $130 ($2,361 when adjusted for inflation). Siegel and Shuster later regretted their decision to sell Superman after he became an astonishing success. DC Comics now owned the character and reaped the royalties. Nevertheless, DC Comics retained Siegel and Shuster as the principal writer and artist for the Superman comics, and they were well-paid because they were popular with the readers. He died from a heart attack at the age of 81 in Los Angeles,California.
Famous Birthdays
- 28 January 1611 – Johannes Hevelius - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johannes_Hevelius
A councillor and mayor of Danzig (Gdańsk), Kingdom of Poland. As an astronomer, he gained a reputation as "the founder of lunar topography", and described ten new constellations, seven of which are still used by astronomers. He discovered four comets, in 1652, 1661, 1672 and 1677. These discoveries led to his thesis that such bodies revolve around the Sun in parabolic paths. He was born in Danzig,Pomeranian Voivodeship.
- 28 January 1912 – Jackson Pollack – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackson_Pollock
American painter and a major figure in the abstract expressionist movement. He was widely noticed for his technique of pouring or splashing liquid household paint onto a horizontal surface ('drip technique'), enabling him to view and paint his canvases from all angles. It was also called 'action painting', since he used the force of his whole body to paint, often in a frenetic dancing style. This extreme form of abstraction divided the critics: some praised the immediacy and fluency of the creation, while others derided the random effects. He was born in Cody Wyoming.
- 28 January 1966 – Seiji Mizushima - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seiji_Mizushima
Japanese anime storyboard artist and director. He has directed such series as Shaman King, Fullmetal Alchemist, Mobile Suit Gundam 00, Un-Go, and Concrete Revolutio. He also directed anime films such as Fullmetal Alchemist: Conqueror of Shamballa and Mobile Suit Gundam 00 the Movie: Awakening of the Trailblazer. He was born in Fuchū, Tokyo.
Events of Interest
- 28 January 1887 - The first digging work on the Eiffel Tower started - https://www.toureiffel.paris/en/the-monument/history
It took two years, two months, and five days after construction began. The pieces of iron are connected by 2.5 million rivets. They were put in place by between 150 and 300 workers who were employed to build the structure. The structure may be named after Gustave Eiffel, but it was actually his senior engineers, Maurice Koechlin and Emile Nouguier, who designed the building.
- 21 January 1981 - The World Land Speed Record on a public road is broken by Rudolf Caracciola in the Mercedes-Benz W195 at a speed of 432.7 kilometres per hour (268.9 mph). - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_W125_Rekordwagen
The streamlined car was derived from the 1937 open-wheel race car Mercedes-Benz W125 Formel-Rennwagen, of which also a streamlined version was raced at the non-championship Avusrennen in Berlin. The main difference to the Grand Prix race car, which had to adhere to the 750 kg (1,653 lb) limit, was the engine. While the GP car had the 8-cylinder inline M125, which was rather tall, the record car was fitted with a V12 engine that was lower, which reduced drag. It remained the fastest ever officially timed speed on a public road until broken on 5 November 2017 by Koenigsegg in an Agera RS driven by Niklas Lilja, achieving 445.6 km/h (276.9 mph) on a closed highway in Nevada.
- 28 January 1896 – Walter Arnold of East Peckham, Kent, becomes the first person to be convicted of speeding. He was fined oneshilling, plus costs, for speeding at 8 mph (13 km/h), thereby exceeding the contemporary speed limit of 2 mph (3.2 km/h). - https://www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/HistoryofBritain/Walter-Arnold-Worlds-First-Speeding-Ticket/
The London Daily News detailed the four counts, also known as “informations”, on which Walter Arnold faced charges at Tunbridge Wells court. Arnold’s vehicle was described several times in the newspaper court report as a “horseless carriage”, and the case clearly raised some interesting philosophical as well as legal points for the bench. The first count, which reads oddly now, was for using a “locomotive without a horse,” the next for having fewer than three persons “in charge of the same”, indicating the enduring influence of horse-drawn and steam locomotion when it came to legislating the new vehicles. Next came the actual speeding charge, for driving at more than two miles per hour, and finally, a charge for not having his name and address on the vehicle. The case may have had an influence on the changes to legislation shortly afterwards. The fearsome machines no longer needed a minimum of three people to control them.

SightSeer Scrutineer Script for Pilot video Episode 1 on Youtube:
Who?
Hello, welcome to the pilot episode of “Sightseer Scrutineer.” I am your host and creator, Michael Hoerbelt. I am a real person and this is being broadcast in my home office. I have a passion for travel and writing good reviews to enhance the experience for the next person, and in the end, making this a better world for all.
During the week I drive Tractor Trailers and typically come home daily. I see a lot of places, people, and history. Sometimes I stay over at a hotel and go out to a restaurant to eat. You may hear me say that I have “ground travel advice,” and that’s because I have little experience with flight and trains or boats. I do have paddle boating experience, and some destinations are accessible by paddle boat, but I prefer to stick to what I know best. If you plan to drive, ask me!
Where?
The show will take place mainly in my office, but as this is a travel show, I will be adding in certain destinations at which may be suggested by the subscribers of this show.
What?
The purpose of this show is to inform travelers and the public of an overview and detailed insight on “other” reviews of certain places like: hotels, stores, parks, and restaurants. Also a part of my goal is to remain honest, hence why I’m shooting at my home and in my comfy clothes, no special lighting or green screen enhancements.
There will be 4 features to every episode including a closing statement. In the first feature I will be doing a new review of a place I’ve never been to.
In the 2nd feature I will give “ground” travel advice using the App and Website Google Maps (this will vary from show to show with a few new tips every episode).
The 3rd feature will showcase one of my past or most recent reviews about a place I’ve actually been to and why I wrote what I did. I will also include ground travel advice to this feature.
The last feature will be a review or reviews for the subscriber(s) in which they can request in the comments/or message me a place they want me to do research on. The request will be shown the following episode, but you MUST subscribe to send in a request. I prefer that your request comes in before Saturday EST.
Why?
This idea is of my own creativity and is to help you and others to make the best educated decision RATHER than doing all the research yourself…in other words, it’s supposed to save your time.
How?
By reading through reviews left by the public and/or professional critics and filter out the bland or biased opinions. *Take note however, that I will not be completely un-biased as it has been pointed out to me that no human is completely emotionless. Therefore I will keep bias’s down to a minimum.
I will also follow a set of standards so that you have a clear definition of my *honest* opinion.
Standards:
Hotels: 6
Cleanliness-smell of room, quality of sheets, bathroom
Accommodation and amenities-TV, wifi, plugs, Good Toilet? fridge, microwave, hair dryer, ironing board, coat hangers, coffee maker, wheel chair accessible, sofa, office chair and table, lamps, window, indoor/outdoor pool, exercise room, balcony, was hotel able to give you toiletries or plunger?

Customer service-Are the representatives helpful, respectful, enthusiastic, have good hygiene and efficient?
Policies (ie refunds/returns)-Are their policies legit/real or are they trying to rob your faith in words?
Quality of product/service-Did whatever you bought work, was it of bad quality/high price, was it: you get what you paid for aka low quality low price? Was the service unique, relaxing, accommodating, did the person giving the service open to requests?
Parks: 4
Accessibility-Who can benefit from going there? Are the trails clear and easy to follow? Are the trails often too muddy, are they gravel or paved or wood chips or man made wood cat walks?
Signage-Is there enough information to guide you through the park, is it easy to get lost, is there enough information on the ecology or sights of the park?
Parking and Roads-How many vehicles can fit there, how big of a vehicle can I fit there? Are the roads extremely rough, do I need a 4x4 to get there, is it paved or dirt or gravel?
Price (if applicable)-Is this park worth the price, who funds this park, where does the money go?
Closing:
This concludes the end of the Pilot Video
If you leave a comment or message me at [email protected] for a request for me to review a place, please subscribe so you can be featured in the next episode.
You can read all of my reviews on my Tumblr account “mhoerbelt” which will be listed at the bottom of this video.
You may have also noticed the artwork and easel behind me I claim to be an artist and you can view all of my work on Facebook under MCH_Artwork. I will post the link at the very end below this video.
Thank you for watching, there will be new content by the end of next Sunday EST. Please subscribe and feel free to participate in my “interactive” experience. I value your opinion and loyalty.

Colorado 2018
I started working back in July of 2017 with a goal to save up enough money to travel. I worked hard and saved money. After months of going to school while working, my coworker and I talked about traveling somewhere, and we were both interested in Colorado. Just a few weeks before spring break, we started planning that trip.
After my coworker assured me she was all in to go, we started researching and planning everything. The destination we decided to go to was a town in Northern Colorado called Estes Park. This town caught my attention for 2 main reasons: Rocky Mountain National Park and The Stanley Hotel. If you don’t know by now, Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) is an amazing park and was referenced in that John Denver song, and The Stanley Hotel is where Stephen King stayed, which inspired his book, The Shining. I was so excited to see these attractions that I made sure the whole trip went well. Keeping a budget in mind, I found the best flights, hotels, and activities to do. When everything was planned, we talked over our work schedules with our boss. We knew we couldn’t take off a whole lot of time from work, so we went with 3 days. It wasn’t a lot of days, but we were happy with that and ready to kick off our spring break.
Suddenly, weeks before the trip turned into a day before the trip. Then, the night before our early flight came. We had everything packed in each of our own backpacks. We arrived at the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) Airport 2 hours prior our flight departure. Just printing our boarding passes, going through security, and waiting at our gate was exciting. I was happy that we were following through with our plans and traveling to a different state. Once we boarded our flight and departed, we said goodbye to the sun rising over Dallas.
After the 2 hour flight, we landed in Denver, Colorado. The Denver International Airport was a very impressive and huge airport. We were supposed to wait for an hour until our shuttle bus came to pick us up and take us to Estes Park. Luckily, the driver called right when we got to the airport and said he was ready to pick us up early because we were the only ones scheduled on that morning ride. As we drove out the airport and away from Denver, we instantly saw mountains in the distance. I was becoming even more excited and couldn’t believe we made it and were close to our destination. After about an hour and a half, we were just entering Estes Park and were in awe of a brand new scenery of snow, mountains, and hills.

We were dropped off at our lodge, which was near town and RMNP. It was a very cozy and decent lodge. We walked out to our balcony and had a view of the street filled with trees and a lake running through below us. We didn’t want to waste time, so we immediately ordered a taxi to The Stanley Hotel to have lunch and tour the hotel. The hotel looked just like how I had imagined it. We walked through the quiet hallways and it felt very spooky.

Afterwards, we decided to walk to town and look for lunch there. Not too far a walk away, we were introduced to a very cute little town with souvenir shops and restaurants. We had a relaxing lunch with a beautiful view. After lunch, we walked through some shops.

Some ladies working there suggested we hike to Gem Lake. We took their suggestion, ordered a taxi there, and started hiking. We were told it was a short hike, but it took us a very, very long time to get to Gem Lake. We accidentally went on a longer trail and the elevation was kicking us in the butt. We did, however, make it to the top. The Lake was frozen and it became very cold and windy up there. It felt amazing, though. Since we weren’t there during peak season, it was very calming because there was no one there except a couple. They were very friendly and took our picture. It was getting super cold, so we headed back down. We started to rush because the sun was setting soon. I went too fast and slipped on an icy rock. My knee was bleeding and the blood was bright red in the snow. We were finally out of the trail, but our taxi wasn’t answering and we had no other transportation. We began to worry, until that couple we met at the top came out. They offered us a ride back to our place, and were glad to accept it. They truly seemed like nice folks, so we weren’t worried that we’d be in danger. Later that night, we were exhausted and went to sleep.

The next morning, I woke up early right before sunrise. I sat outside on the balcony, eating breakfast. Our plans for the next day were to go to RMNP. It was one of the main reasons why we came here. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out, but there was still much to do. We walked to a trail near the town that was high up. At the top, there were views of the whole town and a some ruins. We saw a view of The Stanley Hotel, too. We had some snacks and enjoyed our time up there. We grabbed some lunch nearby, which also had a beautiful view. We walked through some more shops, looking for souvenirs. On our way back to the lodge, we saw a small park. We walked through the gates and the ground was covered with snow. There were huge steps in the snow, like a bear’s footprint. Then, we walked back to our lodge and took a nap. We woke up hungry and walked to a restaurant nearby. After getting back, we decided to take advantage of our lodge’s hot tub. It was very cold out, but being inside the hot tub felt very relaxing.

On our last day, we wanted to watch the sunrise at the trail that with views of the whole town. So, we woke up in the morning, when it was still dark, and started walking to that trail. It was pitch dark, but we had flashlights on us. As we were walking, we were caught off guard by an animal running just to the left side of me, as if it was chasing us. We instantly stopped and turned off our flashlights. I whispered to my coworker to not move at all. We waited and slowly moved to the opposite side of the road. Then, we heard it growling and I swore it was coming right at us. I was shaken and felt like this was how we were going to get severely hurt or die. We saw a car coming and stood in the middle of the road trying to get its attention. We were desperate for any help, but it drove around us, leaving us alone in the dark. I saw a house just off the road and whispered to my coworker to walk towards it. We slowly moved, but my steps were loud from the gravel on the ground. When we made it to the house, we waited on the steps on the porch in the cold until the sun rose. I was afraid something would come out and attack us, but we were safe. We walked back to our hotel lodge and decided to stay there until our shuttle came to take us back to Denver. As we left Estes Park, we saw our last glances of the beautiful town. After an hour and a half drive, we were dropped off at the Denver International Airport. We got some food then ordered a lyft to the Denver Aquarium. The 30 minute drive downtown seemed long as we noticed how different it looked from Estes Park. After the aquarium, we walked around 16th Street Mall with our heavy backpacks and sweaters in hand. As the afternoon was coming to an end, we decided to head back to the airport a little early for our flight back to Dallas. For some reason, we almost forgot to go through security. We had enough time, though and waited at our gate to board our flight. This time, we had bigger seats together at the front of the plane. It was the same airline, too.

We were sad to leave Colorado and have to get back to work the next day, but it was a successful adventure. I’m grateful to have been able to go with my best friend and have everything go right plans-wise. Besides the bear scare, it was very safe and fun to be able to travel outside of our home state on our own.

Win a Free Trip Around The World!
Twelve years ago, I was inspired to travel the world by five backpackers I met while on a trip to Thailand. As we talked on our way to a temple outside Chiang Mai, I was captivated by their tales from the road. Since my trip to Costa Rica the previous year, I had thought about nothing but travel. All I wanted to do was travel more and here were five people who had managed to unlock “the secret” to long-term travel. They were living my dream.
And I wanted to nothing more than to follow in their footsteps.
So, in a moment of spontaneity, I quit my job, finished school, and with my savings went on a yearlong trip around the world. Eighteen months later, I finally came home, sat back down in a cubicle, and realized this wasn’t for me. I immediately decided to head out again and, a few months later, flew to Europe.
I’ve been a perpetual nomad ever since.
What started as a yearlong trip has turned into a decade-plus adventure. I’ve been to close to 90 countries, lived and worked overseas, and seen and done things I never thought possible. I was just going to get travel out of my system before I settled down with a corporate job – but life had other plans!
I never had any intention of making travel a career. But this little a personal blog I started has morphed into a six-figure business with employees, digital guides, a best-selling book, a charitable foundation, media school hostel, and a host of conference and speaking engagements.
It’s been a crazy ride.
And it can all be traced back to my decision to travel.
Today, the third edition of my New York Times best-selling book, How to Travel the World on $50 a Day, is out. This new edition contains over 40 pages of new content, updated prices, tips, tricks, and travel advice. It features new companies and resources you can use to help you travel cheaper. It also has more of a global perspective to help non-Americans, couples, and families travel.
So, in honor of this new edition, I want to do something special. I want to give someone the chance to travel and change their life the way travel changed mine:
I am giving away a FREE trip around the world. (For real.)
I know how lucky I was to be able to do that original trip and how much of a positive impact it had on my life.
So I am going to give a free trip around the world worth $18,250 USD (i.e., $50 a day) to one lucky person who buys the book. It’s like Willy Wonka’s golden ticket contest…except winning this won’t turn you into a giant purple ball!
So, without further ado, here are the details of the contest — and how you can win:
The Prize: One trip worth $18,250 USD (i.e., $50 a day) with money paid out in monthly increments.

You have six months to start your trip after you win and nine to eighteen months to complete it (or when the money runs out, whichever comes first).
How to Enter:
Purchase a copy of the latest edition of my book, How to Travel the World on $50 a Day. You can buy it in person at any retailer or online at the following places:
Write a 500-word (no more) mini-essay on why you really want the trip, what you hope to accomplish, and how you will give back to the world along the way. Be honest and raw. I want to know what drives you. I want to know your why. Essays will be judged on clarity, humor, and creativity.
Submit a copy of your receipt along with your contact details and essay by clicking the button below:
This contest will run from now until 11:59:59 EST November 30th, 2017. Winners will be picked on or around December 17th, 2017.

Eighteen months later, I finally came home and immediately decided to head out again.
I’ve been a perpetual nomad ever since.
My life is not what I imagined it would be. What started as a yearlong trip has turned into a decade-plus adventure. I’ve been to close to 90 countries, lived and worked overseas, and seen and done things I never thought possible. I was just going to get travel out of my system before I settled down with a corporate job – but life had other plans!
And, along the way, what started as a personal journal has morphed into a six-figure business with employees, digital guides, a best-selling book, a charitable foundation, media school, a hostel, and a host of conference and speaking engagements.
It’s been a crazy ride.
And it can all be traced back to my decision to travel. I never had any intention of making travel a career.
For real.
Three other things to know
Winners will be required to update readers about their trip once a month on this blog so we can follow along with your adventure!
This is open to residents of the fifty United States and the District of Columbia and Canada (excluding Quebec), age 18 or older. I wish it was open to the entire world but since this is a published, print book, I must work within the constraints my publisher’s legal department tells me!
Be sure to read all of the legal information below!
So I wish you luck. Even if you don’t win, the book is an up-to-date collection of all the best ways to save money. It’s my most complete guide to date, containing resources, tips, and details you won’t find on this blog (so you should totally get it!). (Plus it makes an amazing gift for anyone you know who travels…and the holidays are coming up soon! Just saying!)

Tourist Visa Secrets that will save you money
The tourist visa secrets will help you save money by showing you free/economical ways to provide proof of onward travel and hotel reservations. Most countries ask for proof of onward travel and hotel reservations among other common tourist visa requirements
Terminology
Onward Travel: Leaving a country and traveling ONWARD to another country or back to your own country
Applying Country: The country you are applying the tourist visa for
Onward Travel Ticket Reservation Secret
The bummer of the pack. You have to show them proof of onward travel in the form of a confirmed ticket into and out of the country. This ticket shows them that you don’t plan on settling down in the country and you will leave the country. The annoying part is the cancellation process and the loss of money if the visa is not approved. The first of the tourist visa secrets will help you save money on ticket reservations, read along.
The Secret
Most people think that they have to book a flight ticket and present it as a proof of onward travel. It is true for some countries. But, many countries accept bus, train or boat ticket as a proof of onward travel.
I got all 7 of my South American visas by showing bus tickets. The bus tickets are cheaper than flight tickets.
The Free Trick
You don’t have to really pay for a bus ticket. I presented FAKE bus tickets to embassies (sshh!) of 7 South American countries and got tourist visa for all of them. What you do is book a real ticket once to get hold of the ticket template. Then use Microsoft Word or another text editor to edit the ticket to fill in the details. Use, Bus guide to the Americas, to find an online bus reservation portal for the applying country. Find a bus to and out of the applying country. Now, edit the ticket template and fill in the accurate information about this bus – origin, destination, departure time, trip duration, cost, travel company etc. Now, you can present this bus ticket to the embassy as a proof on onward travel. And, it is totally FREE.
The Economic Trick
If you don’t want to submit FAKE tickets then you can book a real bus ticket. Use GoogleMaps and find nearby towns on both sides of the border of the applying country. Due to the short distance the bus ticket price will be less.
For e.g. Ciudad del Este, Paraguay to Foz do Iguacu is seperated by a bridge. The bus fare ~$5
Visa Application Scenarios and Onward Travel Proof
There are three visa application scenarios and your onward travel proof might change based on the scenarios
(i) You are applying in your home country
You are from India and you need a visa to visit Brazil. So, you have to apply in the Brazilian embassy in India. So, what do you give them as a proof of onward travel?
Firstly, ask the local Brazilian embassy if they will accept a round trip bus ticket from a neighboring country, let’s say Bolivia. You don’t have to be going to Bolivia. It’s just a trick.
If they do, then follow the above steps and reserve a round-trip bus ticket between Brazil and a neighboring country.
If not, then sorry buddy you will have to give them a flight ticket. I feel your pain.
(ii) You are traveling on the same continent and applying in a neighboring country
You are from India and you are traveling in Bolivia. You want to apply for the Brazil tourist visa in a Brazilian embassy in Bolivia. They should accept a round-trip bus ticket from Bolivia as a proof of onward travel. Still, call them ahead to confirm
(iii) You are traveling and applying in a country that doesn’t share borders
You are from India and you are traveling in Bolivia. And, you want to go to Colombia. Colombia doesn’t share borders with Bolivia. In that case you want to present a round-trip bus ticket to Colombia from a 3rd country (Peru or Ecuador) that shares a border with Colombia.
Ask the local Colombian embassy if they will accept this.
I presented a bus ticket from Brazil to Argentina to the Argentina embassy in Ecuador. The embassy told me to apply in Brazil since I am entering Argentina from Brazil. But, I got the Brazilian visa by presenting a bus ticket from Paraguay to Brazil in the Brazilian embassy in Ecuador. So it all really depends on the embassy
Two things to keep in mind
(i) The duration of the visa, that is the amount of days you can stay in a country, may depend on your proof of onward travel. Because your round-trip flight, train or bus ticket shows how long you intend to stay in the country. Therefore, if you use one of the tricks I shared then make sure you give dates based on how many days you want to spend in the country
(ii) The visa start date may depend on your flight or bus ticket into the country. So, if you want to travel 2 months later then DON’T give earlier dates or your visa might start and end before you actually plan on traveling
Hotel Reservation Secret
Some countries demand confirmed hotel reservations for the entirety of your stay. If you are a traveler that likes to plan as you go then this is a big problem. Or, if you don’t have enough cash to make reservations for your 2 month stay in Argentina. What do you do? Worry not, read the second of the tourist visa secrets that will save you money with free cancellation hotel reservations
THE FREE TRICK
Use Booking.com to reserve hotel rooms that have free cancellation policy. You don’t pay any money if you cancel your reservation before the mentioned time. Most hotels have free cancellation as long as you cancel the reservation 24 hours before your check-in date. You are not going to stay at these reserved hotels, they are just for the visa application sake. After you get the visa decision, cancel the reservations if you don’t plan on staying at the hotels.
Two things to keep in mind
(i) Ask the applying country embassy if the visa duration, number of days the visa is valid, depends on your hotel reservations. If yes, then reserve hotels for the number of days you want to spend there. I booked hotels for 60 days in Brazil because I wanted to spend 2 months in Brazil.
(ii) Ask the applying country embassy what is the minimum number of days you have to show the hotel reservations for
