16 Things to See and Do in Tallinn, Estonia

Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, is a medieval city nestled against the Baltic Sea. With its picturesque historic Old Town that dates back to the 13th century, it has been drawing in tourists since the fall of the Soviet Union.

Cheap flights, cheap prices, and the beauty of Prague without the crowds have made Tallinn an appealing weekend getaway for Europeans.

I visited the city on a trip from Finland — there’s a frequent ferry service between the two cities — and was enamored by it. It was a blend of Nordic and Baltic culture with plenty of things to see and do.

Best of all, it was super affordable!

Though the city has become a bit more crowded and expensive in the last couple of years, it’s still one of my favorite places in the region. It’s peaceful and wonderful: the people are open and relaxed and the country is super tech-forward (they offer e-residency services specifically for digital nomads).

To help you make the most out of your trip, here are the best things to see and do in Tallinn — from the super touristy to off the beaten trail!

1. Take a Free Walking Tour

One of the best things you can do when you arrive in a new city is to take a free walking tour. They’re a great way to learn about a destination and its history while taking in the main sights.

Not only will it give you a solid introduction to the city but you’ll get access to a local guide who can answer any and all questions you might have.

EstAdventures has a few different free tour options, including general walking tours, tours focused on the city’s communist past, and street art tours. Just make sure to tip your guide!

2. Estonian Maritime Museum

Founded in 1935 and located inside a historic 500-year-old building, this museum highlights the history of Estonia’s maritime culture. The main attraction is the interactive Seaplane Harbour exhibition, which includes a Short 184 seaplane as well as the steam-powered icebreaker Suur Toll.

And don’t miss the 1936 submarine Lembit, the only surviving Baltic warship from before WWII (and one of only two submarines in Estonian naval history). There’s also an aquarium, ship miniatures, and a flight simulator. It’s a fun and educational place for adults and kids alike.

3. Glehn Park & Castle

Glehn Park, located on the Nomme hillside, is home to medieval-style Glehn Castle. Built in 1886, both the park and castle were created by Nikolai von Glehn, a rich and eclectic man known for his unusual taste in decoration (such as tables and chairs carved like figurines, large statues, and an obelisk in front of his house marking the grave of his favorite horse).

Unfortunately, most of the castle was looted during World War I, so none of the unique pieces of furniture he created remain. However, you’ll still get to see the statues he built on the grounds of the park. There’s also an observatory tower and palm house, which has a gorgeous mosaic rooftop. It’s a good place to relax, go for a walk, or go skiing during wintertime.

4. Tallinn Town Hall & Square

Tallinn’s Gothic town hall is the oldest in the Baltics. Completed in 1404, it boasts a 64m spire topped with a weather vane of an old warrior (named Old Thomas), a Tallinn city guard and hero from the 16th century who fought in the Livonian War.

You can climb the spire to 34 meters (111 feet) from May through September. The interior of the Town Hall is open to visitors as a museum only during July and August; inside, you’ll get to see colorful designs on the walls, intricate wood carvings, and stunning arched ceilings as you learn about the city and its history.

The surrounding plaza is a great place to people-watch and it hosts lots of activities and markets throughout the year.

Don’t miss the annual five-day Tallinn Old Town Days festival held in May. It’s dedicated to the cultural heritage of Tallinn and includes themed days such as Medieval Day and Children’s Day, as well as numerous workshops, music, and theatre performances.

5. Tallinn Museum of Photography

Hidden amidst the cobblestone streets of Tallinn, this small museum is tucked away inside a 14th-century prison. It focuses on Estonia’s history of photography with a permanent exhibition including antique photos and cameras from 1840 — when photography first made its way to Tallinn — to 1940.

You can also check out contemporary photography from modern-day artists in many of the museum’s rotating exhibits. It’s a very small museum, but super interesting even if you’re not a huge photography buff.

6. Estonian Open-Air Museum

Located 15 minutes from the city center by car, this open-air ethnographic museum recreates what life was like in Estonia’s rural countryside. It’s a life-sized rural village composed of farms, a wooden chapel, a school, fire station, shop, and an inn that highlights how families from different social classes lived during the 18th and 19th centuries.

There’s plenty to do, from eating a traditional Estonian meal to riding a horse to taking a workshop. It’s open all year round, but you might want to go during the summertime when it’s warm! It’s also one of the best things to do in Tallinn with kids. Download the mobile app Numu for a free audio guide while you’re at the museum.

7. Ichthus Art Gallery

This is one of Tallinn’s best-kept secrets. It’s tucked away in the depths of St. Catherine’s Dominican Monastery, which dates back to 1246. On arrival, turn right toward steep steps that take you into the cellar. The confined space used to contain three wings, called the Claustrum, that housed monks in the 13th century.

Today, the space is used by artist Aleksandr Savchenkov, who sells his original artwork from the cellar. As you wander about you’ll also see the ‘Energy Pillar’, which is located in the ancient monastic chambers and is said to be a source of spiritual well-being.

8. Epitaphs of the Cathedral of Saint Mary

The grounds of this church date back to the 13th century, though the current building itself is from the 17th. What makes it unlike most other churches is that coats-of-arms epitaphs hang on the walls of the church instead of more traditional religious artwork or decorations.

Historically, these were used as headstones for people of importance, such as nobles and knights. They reflect the people of status who were buried on the grounds.

In fact, the first man who ever led a Russian voyage around the world, Admiral Adam Johan von Krusenstern, is buried here. Climb the 69-meter (226-foot) bell tower to get a beautiful view of the city.

9. Estonian Architecture Museum

The Estonian Architecture Museum was established in 1991 during the fight for Estonian independence. The museum is located in the Rotermann Salt Storage building, which was built in 1908 (and then reconstructed in 1995 with multiple additional floors for the museum).

Its galleries now feature drawings from the 1920s, as well as over 11,500 archived items (such as drawings and sketches) and some 18,000 items in their photo collection. There are always some interesting rotating exhibits here too.

10. TV Tower

Adrenaline junkies will get a kick out of visiting the TV Tower. Not only will you have an incredible bird’s-eye view of Tallinn from the top, which stands 314 meters (1,030 feet) tall, but you can also try the Walk on the Edge experience. Hop into a harness and step outside of the tower onto the exposed deck. It’s the highest open deck in Northern Europe and offers both an amazing view and a huge rush!

The TV Tower was constructed when Tallinn was chosen as a host city for sailing during the 1980 Moscow Olympics. It closed in 2007 for renovations and reopened in 2012. It has floor-to-ceiling windows (not ideal if you’re afraid of heights) so you can really soak in the view as well as touch-screen information panels so you can learn about the tower and the city.

The tower hosts many events, such as music concerts and the annual Stair Run to mark the anniversary of its reopening.

11. Telliskivi Creative City

The Telliskivi Creative City is a workplace for over a thousand people, with artist’s studios, a radio station, rehearsal spaces, and NGO offices, all situated throughout ten repurposed factory buildings. Telleskivi hosts a flea market every Saturday, and there are over 600 cultural events throughout the year, including dance performances, music concerts, and improv theatre.

There are colorful murals on many of the buildings and you’ll also find restaurants and bars full of locals and tourists alike. Make sure you eat at Peatus (“Stop” in Estonian) for a really unique experience: it’s located inside two old Soviet railcars (and the food is great too!).

12. Bastion Tunnels

These tunnels were initially built in the 17th century as an addition to the Kiek in de Kök (Peek in the Kitchen) tower, and were intended for storage. They later held prisoners and then were used as shelters against air raids during World War II.

In more modern history, thieves and rebels used them for shelter since the police usually avoided the tunnels. They were cleaned out and opened up to the public in 2004. If you’re brave enough, you can explore the winding maze of the dark, damp tunnels on a guided tour when you visit the tower.

13. Toompea Castle & Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

Toompea Castle dates all the way back to the 9th century and is currently used by Riigikogu, Estonia’s Parliament. The east wing has a brightly colored pink and white exterior in baroque style, as ordered by Empress Catherine the Great in 1773. The opposing side still has its medieval stone exterior. The Estonian flag is raised above the tower at sunrise every day.

You can also visit the nearby Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. It opened in 1900 during the Czarist Empire and is home to Tallinn’s largest bell (it weighs 15 tons). The impressive exterior showcases Russian Revival architecture with its onion-shaped dome. The interior is decorated with colorful mosaics and stained-glass windows and has three ornate altars.

Toompea Castle: Lossi plats 1a, +372 631 633, riigikogu.ee. On Thursdays at 11am, there’s a 45-minute English-language tour of the castle. Admissions is free though you need to reserve your spot in advance.

14. Soviet Statue Graveyard

The Soviet Statue Graveyard, located near Maarjamäe Castle, contains a collection of discarded statues, such as those of Joseph Stalin, Vladimir Lenin, and Mikhail Kalinin. After the Soviets left Tallinn, they were dumped here and ignored.

You’ll find large statues of heads (a classic Soviet statue trend) and others that tower over three meters (ten feet) tall. It’s a surreal place to visit — especially when you realize it hasn’t even been 30 years since Estonia achieved independence and these statues were left to fade into history.

15. KGB Museum

Rooms previously used by spies during the Soviet era sit on the top floor of the stylish Hotel Viru, located on Viru Square. They house listening and recording equipment (some cleverly disguised), dial telephones, uniforms, and a typewriter.

Few people ever knew these rooms existed, and they were only exposed in the 1990s when the KGB fled the city. They shed light on just how controlling and subversive the Soviet government was during the occupation.

16. Take in the View

For the best view in the city, head to Kohtuotsa viewing platform. It’s on Toompea Hill and offers the best view of the city and harbor. You’ll also often find buskers here, making it a nice place to end your day and watch the sunset.

Brewing coffee outdoors will never be as easy as at home. Whether you are camping in a forest or sleeping snug in a caravan, you’ll need to plan ahead and have the right equipment. Yet it’s not as tricky as you might think – and there’s no reason to skimp on quality.

I spoke to Alan Adler, creator of the AeroPress and the AeroPress Go and experienced camper and hiker, to find out how best to brew while hiking, camping, and caravanning. Keep reading to find out his tips.

Planning Is Key

The difference between a good cup of coffee and a watery, lukewarm mess? Good planning. From choosing your equipment to having water and heat sources, and bringing the right amount of coffee to knowing what to do with your waste grounds, it all comes down to thinking ahead. “All the things that you do outdoors can first be tried in your own kitchen,” Alan tells me.

What to Pack

Traveling light is key for outdoors adventures. While caravanning allows you a few relative luxuries – such as room for more cups – you’re still in a relatively small space. And if you’re camping out of a backpack, you’ll want to cut down on the weight and size of your coffee equipment as much as possible.

Luckily, there’s plenty of coffee gear designed for brewing outdoors. And, with some careful organization, you’ll need a surprisingly small amount of equipment.

Let’s take a look at the essentials:

Coffee

Think carefully about how long your trip will be and how much coffee you’ll want to drink. You don’t want to get to the last two days of a week-long hike and realize that you’ve run out.

If you choose to bring whole beans, you’ll also need a portable grinder. Brands such as Hario, Comandante, and Rhino have compact ones. Alternatively, you can grind your coffee beforehand. While it will be less fresh, pre-ground coffee can sometimes taste better than poorly ground coffee. Alan tells me, “I personally grind my travel coffee at home.”

Whether you bring pre-ground or whole bean coffee, you’ll need a way to measure the dose and a waterproof way to store it before brewing.

If you are caravanning or driving to the camping site, you might choose to bring a scale with you. But if you’re backpacking to your campsite, this is one area where you can reduce weight. Measure your coffee at home and place each dose in a small sandwich bag.

Make sure to store your coffee – pre-dosed or not – in an airtight container. This won’t just slow down the rate at which your coffee grows stale, but will also keep it dry in case of heavy rain, a leaking tent, or an accidental slip into a river.

You should always leave your campsite as pristine as you found it. Store used coffee grounds and filters in the same sandwich bags or storage devices that you brought them in so that you can carry them away with you. If you have an AeroPress or AeroPress Go, you can also opt for a metal filter.

A Coffee Maker

Ideally, your coffee maker should be compact, lightweight, and durable. Even if you love your Chemex, a glass brewer is not a good option for the great outdoors.

Look to alternatives such as the AeroPress Go, which is currently available for pre-order. It’s durable, compact, and made of food-safe polypropylene. It also comes with a travel mug, and the entire brewer and its accessories fit inside it.

Alan tells me that it’s designed to be packed together when wet, which is ideal if you’ve just finished washing it or it’s been outside in the rain. Simply place the pieces inside the mug, close the lid, and wipe the outside dry.

Cups

Bring an extra cup or two, especially if you’re not traveling solo. You don’t want to find your one mug has cracked and can’t drink anything. A thermal cup might be useful, allowing you to save warm coffee for later.

A Heat Source

If you’re caravanning, you’ll probably have a way to heat water, whether it’s a plug-in kettle or a gas-powered oven. If you’re camping, you can opt for a small gas stove. There are many portable options designed for campers.

If you’re in a dry area and it’s permitted, you could also build a fire. Check the rules first: in national parks and protected areas, live fires may be prohibited or you could need a permit. Remember, too, that if it’s humid or has recently rained, you may struggle to find dry wood.

Should you decide to start a fire, remember to leave the site in the same condition you found it. Consider whether this is an appropriate area for a fire: are there enough trees nearby that you can burn wood without significantly affecting the area? Is there scrubby underbrush or low-hanging foliage that could catch fire? If it is an appropriate area, and there’s a fire ring, use it. If not, make a fire mound.

Keep an eye on the size of your fire to make sure it remains manageable. Don’t forget to triple-check it has fully extinguished before you go to sleep or leave the area. Use water rather than dirt.

And no matter your heating source, make sure to bring matches (and to keep them dry!) or a lighter.

Skip the gooseneck kettle if you’re trying to cut down on space. Opt instead for a pot so it can double-up as a way to cook food. Or if you’re in a hot area with mild nights, ask yourself if you could make do with cold coffee.

“Many would bring a kettle and perhaps a small fueled stove,” Alan tells me. “You’ll probably use that for food preparation, but if brewing coffee is the only reason, I recommend you practice with cold-brewed AeroPress at home.”

A Water Source

If you’re caravanning, you might be able to bring potable water. But if you’re backpacking, water is heavy and takes up space. Plus, bottled water contributes to single-use plastic consumption.

With some careful planning, you should be able to find water in the wilderness. By using creeks, lakes, and rivers, you reduce the weight of your pack and cut down on plastic. Never drink untreated water from a natural source, however. Just because it looks clean doesn’t mean that it won’t contain parasites and bacteria that could leave you with a nasty stomach bug.

First, make sure you only collect moving water or water from the very top of a lake. If you can, collect it from as close to the source as possible. Always go upstream of campsites. Secondly, purify it. There are no treatment methods that can kill 100% of bacteria, but there are several highly effective ones. Here are some common options:

Portable water filters: A good filter should remove sediment, bacteria, and parasites such as protozoa, and many campers use them on their own. However, to be completely confident in your water quality, you should also disinfect it. Make sure you look after your filter and replace it when required.

Chemical treatment: This usually refers to the use of iodine or chlorine, which kill harmful microorganisms like bacteria and parasites in water. They affect the taste of the water and using them can be time-consuming (especially if the water is very cold), but this is a relatively cheap and portable option. You can find water purification tablets in most camping and outdoors stores. However, some chemical treatments should not be used by pregnant women or people with certain medical conditions, nor for prolonged periods. Make sure to consult with your doctor first. Moreover, some studies cast doubt on the efficacy of this process for treating certain types of parasites.

UV light purifiers: These purifiers sterilize water through ultraviolet light. They need a power source, but there are portable versions designed for camping and hiking that can be charged at home. Bear in mind that this is a purifier and won’t remove sediment; you should use it in combination with a filter.

Boiling water: One of the world’s oldest ways to heat water, this can be time-consuming but doesn’t require extra equipment or affect the water’s taste. Since it doesn’t remove sediment, you should still filter the water first.

One of the best things about going camping and caravanning is giving up the technology and unnecessary luxuries. But one thing you’ll be glad you didn’t give up is your coffee. Prepare right, and you’ll find it doesn’t weigh much, takes up only a small amount of room in your pack, and is surprisingly quick and easy to make in the morning or at the end of a long hike.

The ready-to-eat pork and turkey sausage patty items were produced on April 19, 2019, April 27, 2019, May 7, 2019 and May 9, 2019. The following products are subject to recall: [View Labels (PDF only)]

24.92-oz. packages containing “Great Value Fully Cooked Original Pork Sausage Patties” with use by date of 10/16/19 and lot code 1091971894.

24.92-oz. packages containing “Great Value Fully Cooked Original Breakfast Turkey Patties” with use by date of 10/24/19 and lot code 1171971897.

35.6-oz. packages containing “Family Size Great Value Fully Cooked Original Pork Sausage Patties” with use by date of 11/03/19 and lot code 1271972894 or use by date 11/05/19 and lot code 1291972894.

The products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. M2206T or P-2260T” printed on the package. These items were shipped to retail locations nationwide.

The problem was discovered when the firm notified FSIS that the firm’s third-party cold storage facility had inadvertently shipped the ready-to-eat products to commerce.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.

FSIS is concerned that some product may be frozen and in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers or both. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

How to Make Fortnite Chug Jug Slime:

Start by painting the bottom of your jar and the very top of the lid using the blue acrylic paint and set aside to dry. Don’t worry if it’s not perfect as you’ll be covering up any imperfections with the silver tape later on.

In the meantime, it’s time to make the slime!

Start by combining 4 oz of glue, 3-4 drops of blue food coloring and 1/2 cup of warm water. Stir well.

In a separate bowl, add 1 tsp borax and 1 cup of water in a bowl. You want to add the borax solution slowly to the glue as you will only end up using about half of the solution (the other half is used for the green colored slime below). You only want to add until your slime reaches the stretchy consistency you want.

Tip: You want your slime to be firm but not too firm, this will help keep the 2 different colors from mixing.

Next, in another bowl, combine your other 4 oz. of glue, 3 drops of green food coloring, 2 drops of neon green food coloring, the other 1/2 cup of warm water and stir well. Use the remaining borax solution and the same steps above for achieving the correct consistency.

Once your jar paint has dried, you want to use the silver tape to create the outlining of the jar. You want tape to be around the sides and some near the bottom and towards the top of the jar allowing the slime to peak through like a real chug jug from Fortnite.

Once you are done decorating the outside of the jar, add your slime! You want the green slime at the bottom and the blue at the top.

Screw on the lid and if you wish, you can add a silver button made out of a dime wrapped in duct tape (we hot glued this onto the top of the blue part of the lid).

October 23rd of 2018 marked 120 different people sick across 22 different states, due to the same foodborne illness outbreak – the JBS Salmonella Newport Outbreak. The outbreak strain of Salmonella Newport was reported as early in the year as August 5th and proceeded to stretch into the end of September, leaving thirty-three individuals hospitalized and over a hundred ill. While thankfully no deaths have been reported, JBS Tolleson, Inc., of Tolleson, Arizona, ended up recalling approximately 6.9 million pounds of their beef products on October 4th, 2018, in direct response to the outbreak. This type of food contamination and foodborne infection is precisely why the Lange Law Firm puts so much effort into food safety awareness and action!

JBS Tolleson, Inc., beef products have been recalled by the millions, including their ground beef packages which are thought to have possibly been contaminated with Salmonella Newport. The beef products included in the recall were those produced and packaged between the dates of July 26th, 2018, and September 7th, 2018. Unfortunately, JBS Tolleson’s beef products were shipped nationwide to many different brand names, making the massive recall even harder to contain. The recalled products are labeled, however, clearly marked with the establishment number “EST. 267” which can normally be found within the USDA inspection mark. Any JBS beef product marked with this establishment number ought to be discarded. In order to get a complete list of the stores and states where JBS Tolleson recalled beef has been sold, visit the USDA-FSIS website.

Restaurants, retailers, and consumers have all been warned against serving, selling, or preparing recalled beef products for consumption. Any consumers who have purchased these products are specifically urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase as soon as possible.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) on October 4th, “JBS Tolleson, Inc., a Tolleson, Ariz. establishment, is recalling approximately 6,937,195 pounds of various raw, non-intact beef products that may be contaminated with Salmonella Newport.” The department when on to explain the details of a Salmonella infection, saying that

The products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. 18506” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to commercial distributors and a cold storage warehouse in Florida.

The problem was discovered when the firm was notified by their third-party laboratory that a sample was positive for E. coli O157:H7, but the products associated with the sample had already been shipped into commerce. There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.

FSIS is concerned that some product may be frozen and in Commercial Distributor’s freezers. Distributors who have obtained these products are urged not to distribute them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of origin.

When we are traveling with the kids we typically have all kinds of products with us, from toothpaste to bug spray. Safe storage of our travel products is important, and not just because we don’t want to have all of our toiletries covered in sunblock due to the pressure change when flying, but because we don’t want to have the kids riffling through our luggage and getting into something they shouldn’t.

We’ve partnered with Know Your OTCs to share tips for staying healthy while traveling and also about the importance of self-care, and this month they’ve asked us to share what we do to ensure our family’s travel supplies aren’t accessible to the kids so we can enjoy the safest experience on the road together.

Safe Storage of Travel Products

We’re not necessarily traveling with a full pharmacy in our bags, but we do bring along some important goods that help us travel better. Have you ever thought about what you’ve got in your bag that could be bad for kids to get into? It might surprise you.

We looked at what we’ve got packed for our upcoming trip to Florida and here are all the things we came up with that could be potentially dangerous for the kids.

Note: our kids are older and aren’t all up in our stuff, but there was a time in the not too recent past that they were wild and curious little dudes that thought everything was free game. Kids, older or younger, will be curious, so we encourage you to consider our tips as you prep for your next family trip.

Another thing to remember, when you look through our list you’ll see that there’s much more than sunblock listed when we’re talking about safe storage or travel products (and all of this applies to the home as well). Keep in mind that more than 60k kids end up in the ER each year due to hazardous consumption of medications… which a lot of people travel with.

Potentially dangerous travel products

As we started to ponder what exactly we travel with and what could pose some sort of danger we gasped aloud. Like, safe storage just became crystal clear in our eyes as something we need to ensure we always practice. Just look at what we travel with on any given trip:

Soaps and shampoo – some smell a lot like delicious foods

Skin care products – face products aren’t meant for little kids and can be painful if used

Shaving tools – chances are you travel with a razor. Big red danger flag

Toothpaste and mouthwash – yes, something designed to go in the mouth, but not to ingest

OTC pain relief – kids may be familiar or think it’s okay to access ibuprofen or children’s suspension

Prescription drugs – we don’t typically have any of these, but when we do we are extra careful

Vitamins – vitamins aren’t treats but they can taste like it. Our kids always ask for an extra (and we say no)

Supplements – whether it’s fish oil or protein powder, neither should be readily accessible to kids

Essential oils – not too many people travel with these, but some do the temptation to open and smell them all is strong with some kids

Bug spray – true, we often purchase this once we’re in a destination, but then we’ve got it with us as we travel

Sunblock – even our favorite sunblock products and lotions aren’t meant for kids to use without supervision

Did you ever think about all of the stuff you pack that can be potentially dangerous? Crazy once you list it out. So what do you do then? How do you keep the kids safe just in case they get curious when you’re not looking?

Safe storage of OTCs and vitamins

First rule when you’re traveling with OTC drugs or prescription medications is to keep them in their designated child-safe storage containers. There’s a reason that you feel like it’s nearly impossible to open pill bottles: it’s to make it even more difficult for little kids to get their hands on what’s inside.

The same thing goes with vitamins, for adults or children. Vitamins and supplements are often packaged in child-safe bottles, so keep them there. And be sure that your kids know what medication is. I don’t mean that they have the book smarts to start pharmacological school, but that they understand the purpose and the dangers of medicines and why they’re potentially dangerous.

Tip: if you need to separate out the medications or vitamins you’ll be needing while traveling, use a child-safe storage case. As much as you may trust your kids, you never know when they’ll surprise you with an unsafe decision.

Reminder: if you are flying with medications, the TSA recommends these be kept in their original bottles for ease of going through security.

Rule of Thumb: always store medications in child-safe containers and pack them where they’re not easily accessible to kids.

Why is this so important? Medications don’t all look like candy and sugar-coated goodies like they did when we were kids, but it’s always possible that kids can get into them. Even children’s vitamins can be dangerous if too many are consumed.

How to pack fluid travel products

I think we’ve all had the random bottle of face lotion or sunblock explode on a flight, am I right? I know we have all too many times, hence the need to perfect the safe storage of our travel products!

Reminder: when flying, the TSA limits the amount of fluids you can bring through security to 3 oz or less per container. This applies to everything from toothpaste to sunscreen, from your Drakkar Noir to your super-special hair conditioner.

So, what does safe storage of travel products look like?

Tightly sealed with little to no air in the container

If it’s a squirt tube, like sunblock or face lotion, tap the bottle to get as much product away from the mouth as possible, then squeeze out as much air as possible.

Put the sealed container inside an airtight baggy.

Tip: we like to package our fluids with no more than two travel products per bag to minimize a risk of mess

These same methods can be applied to fluid medications, such as children’s suspensions or cough medicine. When it comes to the more potent or sticky fluids, we always have them in their own bag and then be sure, at home or while traveling, to store medications OUT OF SIGHT to minimize the potential hazard.

Rule of Thumb: all of these fluids in their sealed, airtight bags should then be packed in an adult’s luggage, NOT IN A CHILD’S LUGGAGE. Just like how you’d want to be in control of access to lotions and medications at home, the same goes when you’re talking about safe storage of travel products.

How to pack razors and self-care tools

Our kids are smart and curious little guys. They also cannot wait to grow up and think that shaving is the coolest thing. Yeah, no. We’re not at that point in life and want to be sure that they know that razors are NOT for children’s use.

Safe storage for razors, nail clippers, tweezers, mending kits (with sewing needles) means putting them all in one clearly different smaller luggage piece. Again, this toiletry bag is packed into an adult’s luggage and not easily accessible to kids.

Tip: when traveling with a razor, we are sure that there isn’t a blade on the razor handle. We keep any blades in a safe storage cartridge that’s kept in our toiletry bag.

Rule of Thumb: pack anything particularly dangerous in a way that it’ll take several steps and minutes for a child to access. A blade within a cartridge within a zippered case within a toiletry bag packed in the middle of clothes in a compartment in a piece of luggage…

So, now that you’ve gotten our insight on how we pack and what to watch for in your own safe storage of travel products, it’s a great idea to actually take a look around, either in your home or your current hotel room, and double check to be sure that you’re storing things properly. If you peek in your bathroom is your cold medicine accessible to a little person? Is the carry-on bag you’re packing something your kids can get into and you know they’ll be safe?
