Ming Fay’s “Shad Crossing” (2004) at Delancey Street-Essex Street (F/J) celebrates the return of the once abundant shad fish to New York. These river herring typically spend the majority of their adult lives at sea and migrate up coastal rivers like the Hudson River in the spring. Considered a delicacy, shad played a vital role in the region’s history, however, due to pollution, overfishing and the construction of dams, migrations have declined, and commercial and recreational shad fisheries were closed in 2010. Ming Fay continues to investigate the symbolic relationship between the natural world and human needs or desires in his show “Beyond Nature”, on view at Sapar Contemporary through June 1.

Some #NewYorkers like to joke that the Z train is simply a myth or a figment of our imagination, but what is it really? We’ve got answers!

The Z train is a skip-stop service on the BMT Archer Avenue/Jamaica/Nassau Lines that pairs with the J train during rush-hour service in the peak direction on weekdays. The skip-stop service is run between Sutphin Boulevard – Archer Avenue and Broadway Junction. Skip-stop service is an A/B service pattern where only “A” trains stop at “A” designated stations and “AB” designated stations (express stations). This pattern is put in place to increase efficiency during rush hour.

If, like most of us, you’ve always wanted to ride the Z train, you can catch it from 7:00 am – 8:15 am on the Manhattan-bound track and from 4:55 pm to 5:45 pm heading back to Queens. However, the Z may not stop at your station, so be sure to check out this list of all Z train stations at http://web.mta.info/nyct/service/zline.htm
