Patalliro! is fascinating to me because of stuff like this. It's unapologetically gay - even within its anime which aired during primetime hours in 1982 - in a way that many later BL manga would never be, like the ones from the early 2000s which would never dare to call their characters actual homosexuals. Patalliro has actually aged quite well in this regard, there's something comforting about how campy it is.

#i still dont really understand how they got away with this kind of thing honestly #female VAs i get that - but first m/m kiss in an anime in episode THREE?????#theres also the maraich/thomas episode where they are *Both* voiced by women....advanced yuri #patalliro #i love how bancorans gender expression is pretty much explicitly to attract only bishounen #you blushed - so you must not be a girl #etc #i also love how joyful it all is #theres never anything sad or tragic about being gay - only that bancoran is forced to kill the bishounen spies/assassins/etc #when bancoran finds out that gay sex feels good after demian; in the manga he is elated. its basically a positive thing #he awakens to his true power...lol #also notable is that while bishounen youth is glorified maraich is 18 #this means it portrays being gay as an adult as normal; not a phase relegated to nostalgic adolescent periods of time #according to the NYT japan's psychiatric body called homosexuality a mental illness until 1995 #im NOT going to say patalliro changed that or anything lmao but its just significant to me that banmara get to live their lives happily #even raise children together in the manga....???#especially contrasting that with kaze to ki no uta and other manga of the time (no shade intended)#yaoi #<- for tagging purposes #obviously it also got away with a lot by being a gag manga. but still!#months later edit: want to say im not intending to moralize BL manga from the 2000s either. like gen. no hate on them.#as a gay person i just appreciate when characters who act gay are considered gay textually #and its kind of disheartening how gay-as-identity was treated as something incredulous in those manga a lot of the time #even the mere suggestion of attraction to men as a whole and not just the other male lead...yknow #this post is meant to praise patalliro for being unique in its approach to gay content compared to other titles #ive enjoyed plenty of 2000s yaoi titles despite their shortcomings lol #joseiposting #shoujo

forgot how interesting drawing flipnote-type stuff was, since the limited colors, tools, and space force you to be creative. unfortunately i don't have access to basic flipnote studio at the moment (battery issues with my dsi) and the software i used to make these doesn't have the horizontal/vertical dither brushes, but i make do anyways

I'm Mao Onigawara of the Ground Defense Force! I'll protect the peace of Japan!

I was privileged to be part of @dotzines pris-M-agic Zine project, and this is my illustration for it! When picking a magical girl, I wanted to represent a series that was influential on me growing up but would be underrepresented in the zine. Despite other options having a more meaningful influence on me now, I knew they'd be (rightfully) more popular. However, Ground Defense Force Mao Chan was the anime that REALLY got 10 year old me into anime (and, down the line, magical girls!). Strange, right? With these two combined factors, it became an obvious decision.

As for the drawing itself, I wanted to highlight the titular character Mao. Despite being mostly pink in design, her representative color in the story is green. It was a fun challenge to balance that out appropriately while also finding a way to convey her role in protecting the land/ground/earth.

I think the writing is gentle, often funny, and sustained (overall) but it’s the acting and the chemistry that takes it to the next level.

#crash landing on you #which is often the way I find with my favorite love stories #in movies/tv shows #like reylo. comes down to the acting. especially Adam’s (though Daisy is wonderful too)#because you can actually tell a love story through facial expressions/shift in voices/body language #all of those can and do communicate love and personality. interplay and the necessary balance that makes for a great love story #and man they are soooo good. especially her (I mean especially both of them)#but she sets such a high standard. and the way her face flickers between so many different shades of feeling #and not just feeling but personality #instant layers to who she is. and he responds to them all. and you know WHY he does #you know why he’s completely in her chokehold #he’s completely caught by her personality. and she is caught by the ways in which he takes care of her/expresses his love through action #(which is ultimately his personality too)#but in the way of many of my favorite love stories she just has to exist and he has to—-wants to!—do the work #they’re also silly and cute and in Situations where they can Display Behaviors (positive)#but like. it comes down to the quality of the acting creating 3-dimensional people and real love at the same time #I am now wandering from the point #and rambling. but man!#anyway I’m going to go back to bed now

Commentary:

This is less about your favorite color, and more what color most things you own end up being. That CAN match up with your favorite, but I've noticed a lot of people accumulate things in a color that's not their fav, for reasons.

Like, with me, I was sorting through clothes today (packing away winter and pulling out summer) and realized I own a lot of pink, and a lot of blue. My favorite color however, is purple. But I don't actually like the most popular bright shades I see in the stores, so I don't actually have many articles of clothing that are purple. I do own more purple objects, but blue still out numbers the purple.

It's interesting to think about.

god the amount of art i would pump out if i stopped letting lineart talk me out of it i would be unstoppable

#this is a rant @ me and not to sound like i'm bragging when i say what i'm about to say #but i swear to god it takes more time/effort for me to do a cartoonish drawing than a photo realistic-ish drawing and i hate it #because sometimes i just want to do a simple drawing that's just lineart. maybe SOME shading.#but i fuss so much on how the lines should look and where to add more/less lines and what kind of thickness and blah blaaah #i have SO many art ideas i want to bring to life i stress myself out about it #i know that sounds so stupid #like yes just do art! do it bad! it's better than nothing!#but it's... deflating. especially when i literally have an art degree like #5 years of art school and i was barely taught anything about line art #'oh well that's in animation so you'd want to do a degree in television' ???#and those few times lineart was relevant was when there was a naked person in front of us when you're told to just replicate what you see #but we rarely had any variety between models and when i'm in that setting drawing someone my mind is just #~oh god naked person don't stare but i must don't think about it but it needs to be right oh god naked person i'm uncomfortable -+#like it was just overwhelming stress of getting it right rather than actually learning anything #which honestly sums up my art school experience overall #but it also doesn't help when you hate your own body so much and the idea of someone trying to draw you is just humiliating #(like at one point we had to partner up with someone and both paint their portrait AND model their head with clay #and i nearly had a breakdown and refused and asked if i could use someone at home instead #bc I've got plenty of scars and deformities and my face isn't symmetrical and i knew that was either going to be overlooked or exaggerated #and when it's the other way around i try my best to pay attention to detail but it's becoming this debilitating anxiety #of doing exactly that back. and it's made me paranoid to do anatomy related stuff) ANYWAY #it would have been good if people weren't ALWAYS naked and they helped us narrow down how different fabrics work on bodies and stuff #and to help us convey that through LINEART instead of needing to do whole ass paintings and detailed sketches and stuff #[SpongeBob voice] WHAT I LEARNED IN ART SCHOOL IS--- 😬#anyway if any fellow artists have any tips they'd be willing to share i would very happily listen #like i've got my drive back to draw things again which in itself is nice but man #it would be nice to not lose steam 5 minutes after anything i start drawing because i freak myself out #okay rant over if anyone's still here thank you for your patience and interest #me ranting
