Writing Apollo-as-a-young-deity is fun because sometimes it involves completely making shit up based on the loose outline of a story told through old poems, prayers and plays and other times it involves researching the totally legit and well documented ancient art of studying sheep livers to make sure your statesmen don't accidentally piss off Jupiter.
In completely unrelated news, if anyone has any recommendations for books about bird augury, that'd be wonderful.
#ginger rambles#ginger chats about greek myths#apollo#part of why the next part of manent is taking so long is because traditional greek divination is an incredibly involved process#with many sub-arts and studies that all have their own variations developments and places in terms of usage and context#Apollo's sons especially the ones who were skilled seers often had their specific specialty of divination stated/which divination skills#Papapollo passed on to them#Idmon was great with entrail divination apparently#and Iamus was taught bird augury - specifically how to listen to their calls and predict the future from their flight patterns#Calchas the diviner in the Iliad? He was also a bird diviner#Really interesting stuff that's severely underutilised when it comes to portraying stories dealing with prophecy and Apollo#They were skills to be mastered y'all not magic#Anyway save me George Sarton wah wah wah#I absolutely should be sleeping LMFAO

Our Lady Of Mysterious Ailments & The Mystery at Dunvegan Castle
books 2 & 3 in the Edinburgh Nights series
paranormal mystery set in a climate-ravaged future Scotland, plagued by ghosts and magic
follows a 15yo Black girl who’s finally gotten an in to learn scientific magic properly - but it turns out to be an unpaid internship, so she has to take more jobs delivering ghost messages and investigating mysteries to take care of her gran and little sister
in book 2 she’s investigating a strange illness centred on a magic school for boys
and in book 3 she’s attending a global magician conference held in a creepy castle - when someone’s murdered, and they’re locked in until she figures out the culprit
Zimbabwean magic, friendship, disabled characters, no romance (so far)
#The Mystery at Dunvegan Castle#Our Lady Of Mysterious Ailments#Edinburgh Nights#T.L. Huchu#The Library of the Dead#really enjoy this series!#the worldbuilding is very interesting - kinda combo climate-ravaged future but also in some aspects societally it feels kinda 1800s#(especially with the vibe of the mystery/paranormal elements)#I saw that the author (who is from Zimbabwe) describe it as ‘if edinburgh was a third world city’ which actually makes a lot of sense#Also I have to make the wendell & wild x lockwood & co comp again#I felt like book 2 was a little all over the place? I slightly lost track of the other-realms stuff lol#I really loved book 3 though - definitely more direct plot-wise#I like how it explores her journey through learning that the magic society is just as corrupt and shitty as anything else and maybe she#doesn't want it after all. as well as how the stress of everything is getting to her is causing panic attacks#love the scottish accent in the audiobooks!#so many interesting different supernatural elements. yay for sidhe in book 3 (tho only briefly)#hold on. do the book covers reflect the colour of her locs. (ok not quite for book one which is usually blue but there is a green variant)#ok I did say no romance but also I can’t tell if I’m just imagining Something between ropa & priya bc in book 3……they had some moments.#I mean I enjoy them as platonic moments also but just noting here in case it DOES turn out to be intentional and something that happen??#also fair warning the promo for book four seems to spoil somehting that's not even in the blurb??#aroaessidhe 2024 reads

i like to talk abt how annoying i’ll be when the episode that animates ch 122 drops but like. actually i won’t be annoying when it drops. i’ll be annoying when it gets dubbed. i watch mashle dubbed bc i watch it w my brother and he wanted it dubbed bc there’s a lot of va’s he likes. so likely when it’s reaching the point in time when that episode drops i will probably just. not check the mashle tag until i get to watch it bc i want absolutely zero spoilers for how the anime does that scene
#also if they fuck that scene up i think i’ll cry#i’m fine if they change the dialogue up a bit but the original intentions and message there NEEDS to be kept in tact#regardless i’m really excited for it despite knowing it’ll still be a LONG while before it gets there#especially bc s2 leaves off just before the like. finals??? or whtv with all 3 schools#(well. not ALL 3)#point being there’s a lot of stuff that has to go down before epidem#mashle#mashle magic and muscles

replaying dragon age inquisition is just an exercise in “the rebel mages would not fucking do that”
#da#my posts#specifically the hostile ones hanging out in the hinterlands for no good reason.#at least they gave the crazy hostile templars a motivation. a really weak one but still. At least they have a goal.#‘kill at mages. don’t gaf about anyone else’ ok. fine.#‘kill everyone you see for some reason. we need to steal their belongings I guess????’ insane. what the hell.#the could have at least done some blood magic about it. it would have been a boring repeat of da2 themes but at least there would be themes?#it’s just so STUPID. especially coming off of a fresh da2 playthrough.#like there’s some dumb stuff in da2 to give you an excuse to fight both mages and templars as generic npcs don’t get me wrong.#but not this much. and unlike da2 you and your companions comment on it as if it makes any sort of sense lol#also I hate that they decided that the chantry explosion killed a bunch of people (which is not supported at all by either the environments#or dialogue of da2 btw. the game is mainly concerned about anders murdering elthina not randos lol)#but that will come in later.#anyway. every note I find in the game from the mages is so insane. just found the area where the templars burned down a house with mages#locked inside. but because both sides have to be bad for dai plot reasons#the mages killed the peasants that lived in the house for damn reason lmao. AFTER robbing them on the road earlier.#insane choices from the writing team on this one.#what were you trying to SAYYYY#like I’m ok with the mages being a bit brutal. that happens in war. but there’s like. reasons? usually?#like as much as orsino turning himself into a flesh beast is insane and weird both-sides-ism plot device.#at least they tried to give him a reason (even if it didn’t make sense in the context of hawke and co absolutely destroying the templars he#was so convinced were going to kill them all)#the hinterlands mages genuinely have no reason to attack random passersby.#ESPECIALLY SINCE IM PLAYING A MAGE.#like?????? hello I am one of you. how the hell do you even know I’m not one of the rebels.#sorry anyway I’m upsetti spaghetti.

(Whatever they want, Riju, don’t be a hater.)
But anyway, headcanon that during this DLC mission (Liberate the Ancient Tech Lab), the Clan was there for more than just an opportunistic attempt on the Thunder Helm.
All we’re told at the start of the mission is that the Lab was ‘captured by monsters,’ forcing the researchers to flee, and that Urbosa and Riju took troops there to retake it. And that ‘more than just a monster horde [lay] in wait for them.’
What if! The Yiga weren’t JUST setting up an ambush for any heroes who might’ve come to take out the monsters at the lab. What if (in addition) they were there to steal ancient tech from the lab themselves? And figured the monster onslaught would be a good cover?
I headcanon that the Yiga are less alienated in general from many parts of their ancient Sheikah heritage than the Kakariko Sheikah and that that’s a big reason why they take to using Zonai stuff in TotK so readily: they’ve got access to super old records of Sheikah tech rescued and hoarded during and after the genocide 10,000 years ago, so tinkering and figuring out magitech is in their culture. (There’s at least one turn-in quest in AoC where Kohga gives a Clan member some kinda ‘oldfangled’ bit of tech, for example.) In the current era they don’t get a whole lot of opportunities to mess with actual working Sheikah tech beyond what bits they’ve dug up for themselves over the years though. So I feel like in AoC timeline, taking advantage of a monster attack on the Royal Lab to liberate a whole bunch of tech stuff and more documents would be right up their alley.
Meanwhile THIS ^^^ is a lil’ more fodder for my previously stated view that the Yiga/monster ‘alliance’ (this mission takes place pre-Astor betrayal, obviously) is not exactly great. The Clan clearly hasn’t ‘tamed’ the monsters like Urbosa claimed in Destroy the Yiga Clan! since Kohga is surprised that so many are around. So it doesn’t seem like he has control over the monster side of the attack on the Lab, but more like the ‘situation’ is advantageous for some theft and hero-smacking. Regardless, the fact that not only is Kohga surprised at the number of monsters, but cites that as a reason to pull back from battle (it’s definitely not cause Riju kicked his butt, no no never that definitely didn’t happen), tells me that monsters are as much of a danger to Clan members as to anyone else. Why leave the field and hang back til the heroes have repelled the horde to make a play for the Helm, if that horde is your true ally you could safely fight alongside?
Anyway I’m rambling at this point, so I’ll leave y’all with this picture of Master Kohga’s cool new hat:
Stunning. Fashion icon. No notes.
#kidk says stuff#age of calamity#yiga clan#legend of zelda#he’s so fuckin BIG look how bitty the helm is in comparison#((myyyy own screenshots))#((i got so many headcanons about the yiga and ancient sheikah stuff oh i could go on and on))#((that’s why I got kohga hangin out at the lab post-game events: he loves all that science/tech/magic shit and is actually knowledgeable!))#((man gets along so well with purah especially and impa is so mad))#kidk headcanons

oooooooOOOOOooooooOoooh trick or treat!
*takes your hands* read this book. Please
Also have this:
The ballroom was crowded, filled with hundreds of partygoers, all clad in glittering costumes and fantastic masks. But Kanan only had eyes for one woman.
Closing the distance between them, he adjusted his mask, then stepped up behind her. She tensed a little, and he knew she sensed him behind her. "Fancy meeting you here, milady," he murmured.
Letting out an irritated huff, Hera muttered, "Will you stop messing around? We're trying to find a killer in a room full of rich sycophants."
"I'm as focused as can be..." Kanan trailed off as she turned to face him. Instead of her usual musketeer's gear, she wore a deep orange gown, the skirt trimmed with fluttering panels of orange and red. Her pendant sleeves were embroidered in gold thread like feathers, and her mask was gold and red with fiery patterns etched across it.
Okay, he thought. Maybe I'm not that focused.
"What are you supposed to be?" She asked, taking in his simple black and red outfit.
Clearing his throat, Kanan managed to regain his voice. "Uh, Scarlet Pimpernel. You gotta read more old books, Captain Hera. You're a phoenix?"
She smiled, and it set his heart aflame. "How'd you guess?"
#IT'S MY FAVORITE BOOK#the romance the found family the WRITING STYLE#i will propaganda at y'all all day LONG about this book#thanks for the ask!!#i know this was a random assortment of stuff#but i came up with the idea and couldn't resist writing some musketeer's au!#especially after your sweet commentary about it the other day#swr musketeers au#kanera musketeers au#writing stories is a kind of magic too

i was just reading kell's pov in acol where he goes down to see holland in the cells, how he feels hollands eyes scraping against his own, and back in adsom where its described as two stones sparking together. not only does that make me want to go insane, it also makes me wonder if holland feels that too or if its just kell? its not mentioned as far as i can remember in any of hollands pov and not even in their first meeting flashback. the absence of it from holland's pov is a bit of a shame really though it does suggest that its just kell and the effect holland has on him... its also mentioned briefly when lila gets her antari prosthetic eye (in the sense that kell feels glad that he can look her in the eyes without that friction) which makes me wonder, if lila had both eyes would there be that sparking sensation between her and kell? would it not as their black eyes are on the same side? why would that sensation be only due to the presence of the marked eye? it's clear that kell and lila DO have a connection but then again so would most people who went through what they did together (especially as kell is quite dramatic about what he cares about). it would just be a shame to have this connection between antari be a real thing and it not be developed past a couple of brief mentions one of which to enhance a ship. the antari could be endlessly more strange so it's a shame that, even when bonded with the rings, they are essentially just very powerful magic users and not something altogether else...
#give me some STRANGE#also actually i was thinking about if there was an actual bond between antari whether they like it or not#and how lila and holland would navigate that#i tried to write a lila pov fic about this that was mainly just a stream of consciousness actually#about when holland is torturing lila in adsom to get kell to come back#and despite the fear and hatred she felt like she could lean back and through into him like ink into water#meeting something made from the same stuff as her and that feeling of connection being new and utterly terrifying#but alas i cannot write and also don't have the patience to get better at it so it is not somethig i can post#i just really wanted them all to be more weird about it lmao#i can imagine holland turning up to deliver letters and people being like “ah theres holland. he and kell have something weird going on”#or kell being consumed with grief about having to kill one of his own kind but not being able to express it to anyone especially rhy#and feeling this overwhelming wrongness thinking its just that he killed holland#not knowing its actually holland having osaron in his head thats causing the inexplicable wrongness#or just lila hating that she has any kind of bond with holland wishing she could seperate the two of them#but if she were to take a knife to remove him from her she wouldn't know where to start cutting#wow thats a lot of words today#adsom ramble#adsom#shades of magic#holland vosijk#lila bard#kell maresh#anyway i do love and adore these books but it doesnt mean i can't be sad about missed opportunities

-- Poorly Constructed Enchanted Tool --
A small tool carved from a fruit tree seed. Energy to power the enchantment has seemingly run-out long ago, and the method of recharging is unknown - but, based on the appearance, it's very likely that this was once used for detecting magic. Usually, looking through the glass center would highlight areas of higher magical energy concentration present in the viewer's environment, even if they were otherwise obscured to the naked eye. While this form of enchantment itself is highly advanced, the craftsmanship of the item is far less neat or complex than what might be typically seen in similar devices. It may have been made as part of training/practice, or as a hasty replacement for a previous tool that had broken.
#written from the perspective of some fantasy traveler who checks all of the local thrift-stores and lost & found places for every#town they visit - looking for interesting items and documenting them or something#In reality - just another one of my goofy little avocado pit carvings lol. Still working on inlaying little stones in them and stuff#I don't really have the tools to make super intricate stuff but doing little plain swirly patterns is still fine enough lol.#WORKING ON NEW POLL ADVENTURE also I know I know it's been months.. I have been Busy and struck by the evils of summer#But like I mentioned in the previous one I do want to at LEAST finish the quest with the egg lol#ANYWAY.#Things like this would plausibly exist in Nanyevimi (my fantasy world) but wouldn't be very common as - like mentioned- this would be an#extremely advanced enchantment. REALLY advanced mages could sense magic around them (to varying degrees of pinpoint accuracy of location#) without even having to use any external device. But for a majority of people there's really no way to know someone is using magic near#you unless you either see visual proof or if it's strong enough to feel effects from it (since magic is kind of like radiation in that the#higher energy/more of it youre exposed to the more it damages you/can make you sick/etc.) and even then most people would just be like#'hmm why do I feel so nauseous and bad out of nowhere?' likely wouldn't directly think to link it to magic. Thus the only really reliable w#way isto just hone your senses over like 500 years as you become an expert mage - OR use enchantments like these. But a 'sense magic' encha#ntment is not as common as a just 'magic is not allowed here' enchantment. If you wanted to prevent magic from being usedin a space#it's easier to just put up a broad barrier enchantment around that space than to have some sort of Magic Sensor to pick out if it's being#done and then handle each individual case of it . etc. etc. These sort of things can have their uses (especially for people investigating#things or trying to be secretive about detecting something etc.) but are less common - especially in this form (where visuals are used. itd#be more likely to jsut have like 'piece of metal that gets warm or cool depending on magic nearby'.) ANWAY so this is why it's a notable#object. Though a majority of the realm is not very magic literate - if you were a researcher or a mage and found this at a pawn shop you'd#definitely be like 'oohhh!! :0 inch resting... ' if not you might just be like 'oh cool necklace!' lol#also love the quick 2min ''costume'' for the image of it being used. literally just 'wrap yourself in scarves from the waist up' and slap o#a wig and ears lol#on this blog I guess since it's worldbuilding related and technically art.. maybe more like crafting? I should have a crafts tag lol.. hmm

i’ve never watched the descendants movies but sometimes i wonder if you could do a twst and descendants crossover. PROBABLY not but i think if riddle interacted with princess red his head would fucking explode and i would like to witness that.
#especially bc he can't just Off With Your Head her bc afaik MOST of her stuff isn't her own personal magic#the Mage rambles#i don't think the descendants would get along w their twst counterpart#ESPECIALLY not mal and malleus. MAYBE evie and vil?#mal and idia (bc mal is also hades' daughter) would absolutely despise each other LMFAO#just so we're all aware i am cheering for the descendants girlies bc we love supporting women's wrongs

I want to know which octopath developer woke up and chose violence
#yes this is about the extra battles#I’ve been working on them which has taken me a while bc I needed to level everyone first#and I FINALLY FINALLY got them all down#and then FUCKING OPHILIA#GETS UP FROM DEAD AND REVIVED EVERYONE#GIRL I KILLED YOU FIRST WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU JUST HAD RISE AGAIN LOADED AND READY. WHY CANT I DO THAT#tressa: invite friends (or whatever the fuck it’s called)#me: oh it’s them!!!!!! oh wait fuck#anyway we. died again. AND WE WERE DOING SO WELL#the current strat is scholar!temenos arcanist!agnea conjurer!castti and throne i had as merchant but her subjob matters less#castti keeps everyone bp boosted. temenos mainly is keeping everyone at full health#agnea latent power + reflective barrier#and then spam throne’s veil of darkness ability so they can’t land physical attacks either#and then repeat every time Alfyn neutralizes our buffs#the flaw with this strategy is everyone is busy doing damage reduction I don’t have a heavy hitter#especially since tressa keeps stealing castti’s ax#so it takes a really really long time to get them down#i think I might make castti a cleric and then swap osvald in for temenos#I’m worried about that bc osvald is so squishy but elemental attacks are the only thing tressa can’t STEAL#and the one true magic can break shields which will be helpful after ophilia FUCKING REVIVES EVERYONE WITH AUTO REGEN SHIELDS#before I was having good luck with ochette’s summon multiple beasts ability for shield breaking#but I don’t want to give up the reflective barrier/veil of darkness combo I’ve got with agnea and throne#and both of those are dependent on skills unique to them so I can’t just do thief Ochette or whatever#ugh. I’m gonna take a break and come back to this. Alfyn Greengrass you especially are not my friend anymore#actually that’s not fair TRESSA is my enemy. girl gimme my stuff back!!!!!!!!#octopath#octopath traveler

Okay, now that I've had time to get my bearings and sit with Another Code and really think about what I want to say about it, I am prepared to do so.
First off, the Switch remake is not Trace Memory. In fact, if you were like me and played Trace Memory as a kid but then it kind of fell off your radar and you didn't buy a used copy on eBay to replay it before you replayed the remake, you would be forgiven if you had a little niggling feeling that you couldn't place that you had seen all of this somewhere before, but not where. Ashley's name isn't even the same - Robbins is spelled with only one b, which I do understand is the same as in the original UK version, but was still quite jarring to someone who's only played the US version.
I didn't feel like I was playing the same game. There's not a single puzzle that I remember as being the game, and where the original made use of it's hardware, so too does this game, having puzzles that depend on the gyroscope, which might be frustrating if you're playing in docked mode and the controller you tend to use doesn't have gyroscope controls.
It is certainly more fleshed out. There are more parts of the map that you get to visit, and you learn more about the Edwards family, though it also felt like it unraveled more threads than it was willing to wrap up, which is peculiar because it also got rid of one of the most interesting aspects of the original game, which is the multiple endings. No matter what you do, the game funnels you into the "good" ending, which I won't say more details about, just in case anyone reading this hasn't played it. This is a little annoying, because it feels like it's taking away one of the things about the game that made it so special, that the choices you make ultimately matter, but is also overshadowed by the fact that I suck at this game and always have, so I never got the good ending on my own, so now knowing why what happened had to happen and how things ended up the way they did... it's nice to have the closure I was never skilled enough to achieve on my own.
Another cool aspect of this game is that Sayoko being Japanese is not incidental - they actually spend time explaining various aspects of Japanese culture, instead of DTS cards Richard's diary is left on origami cranes, and there's a sweet moment where they talk about the meaning of the name Mizuki. As well, there's actually more depth given to Sayoko's character, even though she was still fridged.
So ultimately... Is it a faithful 1:1 recreation of the source material? No. In fact, you might feel frustrated because it feels like the game is treating you with kid gloves - from things like the forced good ending to the fact that anytime you're working on a puzzle, you just have to press a button to get hints and if you go through all of them it basically just tells you the answer straight out - which, in all fairness, it is.
But is it still worth playing? Yes. It's still a good game, even with the oversexualization of Ashley and the fact that with the camera, you spend most of the game looking directly at her ass and she's 13 years old. If you like puzzle games, which if you don't why are you even following me, it's definitely a worthy entry into that catalogue, which does seem to have been drying up lately.
Now, do I want them to make a remake of Hotel Dusk in the same style?
Hell fucking no. The game was good, but not "I trust you with my baby" good.
#another code#another code recollection#trace memory#game review#like i do think that there's a lot of things that make me feel like this was just a test run for a hotel dusk remake#because otherwise it makes no sense to pluck out the less famous sister and leave the objectively better known one in the vault#and like the fact that the puzzle solved noise is the same as hotel dusk#and the loading animation/going into a puzzle animation is sketchbook style#but hotel dusk owns a part of my heart that trace memory never did#and especially after replaying it and confirming that it is just as good as i remember#remaking it and keeping the magic would be impossible to do with the same kids gloves AC had would be damn near impossible#like they could do cool stuff with voice acting#which AC has but wasn't in the original#but it's a very delicate balance when you're dealing with a story where the main character straight up shot his best friend#and there's a part where if you're not good enough at the game you just. die.#you literally can die in hotel dusk.#but all that said#i'm doing ECT again so my memory is really bad#so i'm waiting until it comes back to play the sequel#but i am excited and looking forward to it!#queue takumi defense squad

I was thinking about how, I’m general, you don’t really see magic in the DC universe outside of Earth(maybe it’s just me but I’ve only seen like one reference towards it) and how on Earth we have Fawcett(idk if it’s canon but I say that it’s where all key lines intersect so it’s… something). It got me thinking that maybe Earth is like Space Fawcett(yes I do love the Earth is space Australia posts) and maybe it’s where all the universal ley lines intersect or something??? Idk just something I was thinking about
#Earth is Space Fawcett#Did I spell Fawcett correct?#Who knows#I thought it was Facewett for a while#Is it that?#Idk#dc#Earthens: yeah we have a few magic users and sometimes unicorns and stuff get through from Fawcett#Earthens: but yeah only a few people so earth really isn’t that special in the universe :(#Alien from most other planets: Im sorry you have a sustainable magic population??? And aren’t particularly vulnerable to magic???#From an alien’s perspective all Earthens are a bit magic just because of the fact that they aren’t especially weak to it#I know Martians can have magic too(I think) so they would be effected by all the ley lines (not as many as earth)#Do with this what you will#Tumblr don’t delete my tags challenge
