I do find Zosan pretty delightful--LOVE a rivals-to-rival/lovers pairing--and for that matter, Franky/Robin is GREAT and whips ass and both pairings were on the candidate list. But lbr I'm a huge sucker for that captain/first mate intense loyalty "til death do us part and you're not allowed to die" shit. plus Luffy being all but canonically ace means I can bring my no-holds-barred-all-romance-no-sex moirail agenda to yet another pairing which is GREAT for me emotionally. eue

After the fifth time that Katsuki pops up at UA, surprising Izuku with Bento for lunch, calling him "sensei" in a cocky(affectionate) tone, Kouta just stops at Izuku's desk on his way out of the room and asks him point blank,

"So are you and DynaMight actually dating, or what?"

Izuku sputtering and dropping all of his paperwork and avoiding the question out of sheer dumbfoundedness.

Then, the sixth time that Katsuki barges in, as he is thrusting the bento into Izukus hands as usual, Kota raises his hand, and stands up from his seat and yells out,

"DynaMight, sir!! Pardon me, but are you dating Deku-Sensei??" And the whole class gasps and whispers. Katsuki appears just as dumbfounded as he looks wide-eyed at Kouta and the students.

"Kouta!" Izuku balks, but then Katsuki suddenly grins mischievously. Izuku doesn't trust that look...

"Well, brat, maybe I SHOULD date him, then I could make sure Sensei doesn't forget to eat every day, right??" Katsuki looked entirely too pleased at the louder gasps and chatter that came from the students. He has a wicked grin as he turns his sharp red eyes back to Izuku.

"K-Kacchan, what are you doing?!" Izuku stammers, beet red and grabbing his arm. "This is not the time for--"

"If you don't want me disrupting your class, then stop leaving your Bento in the fridge!!" Katsuki scolds Izuku before swinging himself back out of the open window. There was a fresh wave of gasps and excited murmuring at the insinuationthat the two lived together. "We're ROOM MATES, OK?" He adds hastily, pointing his finger at the noisy classroom of kids.

He drops out the window and blasts off.

Izuku is left, stood at his desk, hands planted and hanging his head, trying to collect enough of himself to quell the riotous theories now flying around his classroom.

Kouta stands at his own desk amidst his unruly classmates, eyes narrowed as if he had just realized something, "I knew it!" He hisses.

"You're the worst," Izuku texts Katsuki later.

"I know" katsuki replies.

"Now eat your fuckin food or I'll stop making it for you."

So like we’re just not gonna talk about how Garmadon’s whole life was spent doing horrific actions that he couldn’t help do as he’s burdened from the guilt of harming others and himself and pushing away everyone he so desperately loves and wishes to protect, and Wu’s whole life was spent trying to prevent Garmadon from doing something horrifically irredeemable and actively stopping him from harming others and himself whilst also drawing to the conclusion that his elder brother that he so deeply cares about has to be stopped no matter what and he became desperate to find a way to just end Garmadon because at this point its the only way to save him from himself?

Cobra Kai and Accidentally Going too hard on the Iron Dragons

So the Iron Dragons are kind of... a problem. The showrunners and writers had an idea for them, but the execution went a little too hard at it, and we kinda need to deal with it.

Cut for spoilers and also talk about SA and how writers don't understand SA when the victim is a man and the abuser is attractive and female. (But I'll keep that to the end, and warn before I get into it if you wanna read about Axel and Wolf first.)

Dr. Frankenstein's Axel

So Axel is the most sympathetic of the three, he's big and powerful but also a victim (of Sensei Wolf) and generally just weird. Not intended to be harmful, but that how big and powerful he is isn't the end of who he is.

And yet they botched the landing.

See, if he was big and powerful and used what Sensei Wolf taught him to try to 'protect' Sam that'd put him in the tragic monster camp. That he cares for the only person to give him kindness, but shows it through the tools he has at hand: violence.

However he's covetous of her when she isn't in actual threat. So it reads more possessive and sinister than the writers probably meant. Having him menacingly stare at Miguel. Which is probably an emotional beat they didn't mean to hit.

Of the two botched landing, this is botched less, but in the same direction. They know what they wanted, but didn't land the nuance well.

Sidebar: Axel's physicality, as in how large and imposing he is, how good he is at violence, is a part of the tragedy. He was shaped generally scary and honed to match that impression. When he didn't need to be.

Sensei Abusive Jerkface

So Sensei Wolf is meant to be evil, and he's meant to be evil in direct mirror to Johnny. This works. He's in the grown-ups world so he's allowed to be more out and out evil because he's why the kids aren't alright. (Kreese, Kim, and Terry are also more overtly evil than say Tory, Kenny, or even someone like Kyler.)

Sam seeing him be abusive to Axel in the same ep that Johnny is getting all uppity and Cobra Kai-y with the kids (because Daniel is kidnapped) is meant to draw this comparison.

This one they did not botch the landing. He's bad and he's the level of bad you expect.

Zara (without the SA)

So Zara is meant to be selfish and two-faced, she's a girl's villain. She flaunts herself and is egotistical, but she has the skills to back it up. She acts nice in public but cuts with words the moment she doesn't have 'her' audience. She's in the same vein as Yasmine from S1 but actually will kick your teeth in.

And her sleeping with Robbie is meant to be her undercutting Tory off the mats mostly for fun, and because she can. And if a pissed off 'thinks Tory has already cheated on him' sober Robby slept with her, it'd be tacky and Robby would feel bad and it'd make Robby and Tory awkward for the rest of the season (which is the intent).

The issue is a Robby who has believed Cobra Kai lies sleeping with Zara sober would come off as an asshole, and the show decided to hedge that bet. Having him be drunk to make him more likely to go along with it makes sense, there can't possibly be anything else going on here, right?

The intended girl is loathsome, she's meant to be about as endearing as S1 Yasmine (compare to say S1 Moon who is far more endearing, or S3 Yasmine who has a soul). She's intended to be very satisfying to see get her comeuppance. But they made her worse than intended due to a stupid social standard.

Conclusion

Conclusion before the Zara SA stuff for people who don't wanna read that.

The intentions behind each character, abusive jackass teacher, abused well meaning large boy, and self-obsessed bitch (not super fond of the language but that's essentially the point the writers were trying to hit here) are good antagonists for the season. We don't need Axel to be villainous in the same way Kwon is, because we have (well, had) Kwon for that.

But they missed the mark by yards (Axel) and miles (Zara) on the execution. Making them far worse than intended. The same mistake, but on massively different scales.

And now Zara (with the SA)

So the problem is that they (the writers) did not realize if they swapped the genders around how BAD this looks. Because there is a fundamental disconnect in society as a whole that consent laws DO MATTER. Consent laws matter when the girl is hot and the boy fundamentally cannot say yes. This is the third show I've run into that hit this plot point, and this is the third show to miss the mark.

Even The Fosters, which had a male character who was too drunk to consent sleep with a female character sober enough to know better, focused less on the 'he's too drunk to consent' part. The show was more focused on the 'she is around a decade older than him, he is a minor, and she's a manipulative abuser playing everyone in her orbit like fiddles. She is also dating his dad.' So while the show did say 'sleeping with fully smashed boy bad' it didn't focus on that being the whole of it.

The other example, Degrassi, had a protagonist do this shit. Then it plays out as 'he's a cheating cad' when he had dumped her, and only slept with her because 'he was both blackout drunk and had lingering head trauma' which made him pliable. The writers did not see the line they were crossing due to a fundamental social idea that 'all boys are down for sex even if they can't say yes.'

They wanted to absolve Robby of his responsibility. So he would be well and truly without weight in making 'this mistake' (the writer's thoughts). Which in turn means a setting where he could not consent, and so the writers accidentally wrote a rape plot. They didn't mean to, they didn't mean to have Zara be THAT evil.

But here we are. The only advantage Cobra Kai has is we're not suppose to like Zara. We're not even suppose to like her as much as S3 Tory. Who is a messy complicated thing to root for, who does very bad things but she's been through it.

So... congrats, Zara is the worst teenager on the show. Don't attempt to redeem her ever.

Ego Death with the help of this anime: An essay

Natsume Yuujinchou is a grounding anime and can help us achieve ego death. How? It makes us experience the true lives and ways of people who are powerful but never letting their ego come over their daily lives, to the point that us viewers forget about ego altogether.

In shounen, we are always presented with characters who are or will be powerful, and their entire story revolves around their abilities. There is also a group of side-commenters who narrate their greatness. Even when they are pure hearted, the story surrounds the power system, making us think, "cool power, cool personality, I wanna be like them," or " I like this character because they're powerful and their personality stands out." Such thoughts focus on ego. Not to generalize all, but some heavy fans of shounen do end up having ego problems like hidden-god complex or superiority complex.

Here comes Natsume. Like most Slice of Life protagonists, his line of thoughts are wholesome, and so are the people around him (the present timeline). Since his thoughts focus on kindness, empathy, compassion, and forgiveness, we forget that he is actually powerful, and is the heir of a forbidden name-binding book. We do not focus on who he is, we do not focus on his powers, we do not focus on what people think about him. We focus on the story of his cases and sometimes cry about them. Instead of 'wishing to have his cool powers and cool personality' or revering him for it, we wish to see his happiness and the happiness of the ayakashis he helps. We forget wanting this and that, we forget about the concept of "I".

They say it is impossible to completely lose your ego, but there are a few who ironically brags losing their ego.

I read a book of an apparent "Spiritual Guru", and more than half of the book only talks about himself, and how great his findings are, and how he invented the concept of the 8th chakra etc etc. His spiritual journey was in Shounen Protagonist perspective, adventuring to find out cool powers and gaining cool personalities that made him meet these people who always tell him how cool he is. His methods are questionable. And oh, he has expensive online classes to create exclusivity.

Well, most modern 'Spiritual Books' are like this, and I've seen people who start their spiritual journeys with these books spiral down more, and gain more massive ego.

Ego Death was almost impossible when you deliberately search for it 😭😭😭 First of all, living in a society full of ego, we literally have no idea how it feels like.

And then I returned to my childhood anime out of nowhere, and understood it in context. Instead of focusing on labels, (like division of groups, sects, powers, ranking, emblems, etc.) it focuses on purpose. Instead of focusing on self-identity, it focuses on compassion. It treats those labels as a side-note rather than a serious world-building. You don't have to wish to be a hokage or a hero to help the many. You don't have to be on Top to offer a helping hand. The simple daily formula of living life with nature and friends and help those in need if (and only if) you can is a simple path to Ego Death.

To accept simplicity and humility. To accept peaceful isolation. To accept a world of no praises. To accept that you can live a life without labeling anything. To accept that you can exist in this realm without a source of pride.

Only in the simple world of Natsume Yuujinchou did I get the idea of living without a tinge of ego.

Kakashi actually tracking down Itachi immediately after the Uchiha Genocide ‘cause let’s face it, he’s that good of a tracker/shinobi (even if Itachi can completely kick his ass) and single-minded when in mission-mode and was clearly not one of the ANBU/Root or S-Rank jonin enlisted for this. (If he’s going rogue instead of bending the rules for a half-hearted sanctioned pursuit? Call it his Obito&Rin Guilt Complex + remaining guilt over not keeping a better eye on his “junior” when Minato literally dragged Kakashi out of that life for a time so he could recover a bit mentally.)

Anyway. Kakashi catches up to Itachi.

But instead of finding the tween prodigy hypervigilent in bloodlust and ready to engage him in a battle, he accidentally finds the kid mid-breakdown absolutely losing it in grief and guilt once Itachi presumed he was a good distance away from any Konoha or Atasuki pursuers.

And well. This is awkward. And not at all what Kakashi expected.

Does this finally knock Kakashi a bit out of his avoidant apathy to take a more active interest in Sasuke’s and Naruto’s lives? Maybe? But well, it’s a start. Only trash abandon their comrades.

Rin was Minato's favourite. he believed she had a lot of potential. being a medic to the team, she was truly important, and was already incredible at keeping them all alive. she would grow up and become even stronger. he knew she was stronger than she let on.

Obito was Minato's second favourite. sharing the same dream of becoming hokage, Minato would be drawn to raising Obito right and ensuring they both became great hokage.

Kushina's favourite was Obito. they, too, shared the same dream of becoming hokage. they got along well, despite all their playful arguing and fighting. Obito was adorable to her, especially whenever he tried to act tough.

Kushina's second favourite was Rin. being a girl, Rin was easy to get along with, too. she was adorable and got along with Obito, but knew when to put her foot down too. she was a kind girl but had been slightly influenced by Kushina and learned to be just a little harsh if she needed to.

of course, that leaves Kakashi. the distance between the three isn't massive or anything. he is loved no less.

at some point... Minato had lost faith in Kakashi, believing he'd never recover from Sakumo's death, believed Kakashi would never value comrades again. Minato had distanced himself just a little bit from Kakashi, and blamed himself entirely for it (because why would you back away from a kid with no parental figures and clearly needs so much help??).

he believed he could not help.

Kakashi never noticed until he got older and remembered the way Minato would look at him.

the realisation that Minato had no faith, no trust in him hurts, and it only builds a deeper hole when Kakashi knows Minato felt that way all the way up until his death...
