Doctor Takuto Maruki Was Right
Maruki is the Councillor Arcana in Persona 5 Royal and is a fantastic character that the original game was sorely lacking. I’ll be talking some spoilers here. Be warned.
We can talk about how Demiurge/Yaldabaoth/Yagor/Jägermeister (or whatever you want to call him) is straight trash and shouldn’t be the overarching antagonist of Persona 5 another time, but that’s not what’s important here.
What’s important here is that Maruki wasn’t in the original game and that does a disservice to everyone who played it.
For the vast majority of P5R, Maruki is just the high school counselor who was brought in to the school in the aftermath of the Kamoshida incident as a means of damage control. He’s kind, emphatic and insightful and genuinely wants to help anyone seeking his services.
The Phantom Thieves, due to their involvement in the Kamoshida incident are mandated by the school to talk to him; as the game progresses, most of the team members form some sort of connection to him, save for Akechi and Futaba (I believe) as Akechi is only a Phantom Thief when his goals align with the team and Futaba isn’t a student.
Even Yoshizawa and Yusuke interact with Maruki, as Yusuke goes out of his way to do so after hearing about him from the other thieves and he was Yoshizawa’s counselor after the death of her sister.
Over the course of his confidant, Joker gives Maruki his perspective on some of Maruki’s research, which is later revealed to be Cognitive Psience. At the end of his confidant arc, Maruki reveals that he’s known that Joker’s group were the Phantom Thieves since he saw them exit the Cognitive world during the first heist. He says he supports the thieves and their justice but he has to go a separate way. He then exits the story until after the defeat of the God of Control.
If you finish Maruki’s Confidant Arc by the time that he leaves the school, Maruki completes a belated Cognitive Psience paper that he was working on with funding from a college in Toyko and winds up applying his theory when Mementos merges with the real world.
In short, Maruki fully awakens to his persona with the special ability to rewrite cognition. When the cognitive world and the real world are merged, however this power becomes absurdly potent, and Maruki begins to warp reality in order to make a world where no one suffers.
Maruki’s machinations affect all of the Phantom Thieves positively: Joker doesn’t go to prison because... Akechi is alive and confesses to his crimes in Joker’s stead. Akechi is let off the hook for his crimes. Morgana is a human. Ryuji was never injured and is still the star of the track team. Ann’s friend Shiho never attempted suicide. Yusuke was never exploited by Madarame, who instead acts as a passable father figure to him. Makoto and Sae’s dad was never assassinated. Futaba’s mother is alive and is presumably in some sort of relationship with Sojiro. Finally, Haru’s father wasn’t executed after his bossfight and he was never an exploitative egoist.
There’s a lone exception to this: the girl who the game refused to let join the Phantom Thieves; a girl who had been receiving therapy from Dr. Maruki since before the start of the game due to her trauma from the death of her sister, Sumire Yoshizawa.
In a way, “Kasumi” was Maruki’s prototype for the world he wanted to create. She couldn’t process the guilt she felt for surviving the crash that killed her allegedly more talented sister and consequently wished that she was her late sibling.
Now the world that Maruki creates is essentially a utopia, where no one suffers and crippling psychological harm is unable to befall anyone. Now we can consider the value of free will that Maruki is removing by becoming a new “God of Control”, but as a card carrying deterministic nihilist, I see it as more or less as trading the whims of an uncaring chaotic universe for those of a benevolent eccentric. The game frames this as a stagnation of humanity, something I don’t entirely agree with. Maruki understands that physical wounds (aka hardship) are inescapable (and can provide adversity to fuel growth) and his big theory revolves around altering cognition to inoculate against mental illness. Any issue with Maruki’s world revolves more around his personal flaws and lack of moderation than it does with his theoretical framework. Regardless, Maruki’s world is more ethical than what it replaces.
In the third semester, if we ignore some of the alterations like reviving the dead as they’re more of a condition of the world than an effect of it, many people who would otherwise be sick or destitute are not, and the natural conclusion of Maruki gaining full control (as evidenced in the bad ending where you side with the doctor) is a world where no one is. Essentially, the Phantom Thieves in the third semester who fight against Maruki are condemning these people to poverty, despair and a miserable death. Ethically, for the sake of their own morality, the Phantom Thieves are the bad guys.
Maruki’s motivations need to be examined closer. He is someone who has been largely unable to move past his own trauma (as evidenced by the entire third semester and foreshadowed in the scene where he runs into a college friend) so he has come to the conclusion that he should dedicate himself to moving others past theirs. I mean, mind-wiping your fiance of most of her life with you to cure her of her PTSD and having your life’s work stolen by Shido as you try to pick up the pieces would probably leave a guy feeling pretty empty. Essentially Maruki has resigned himself to his own sorrow after repeatedly being dealt a bad hand, so to speak.
I think we can safely say that at the very least, Maruki has been emotionally displaced (if not worse) since the incident with Rumi and having his life's work defunded has led him to a place where his only real desire is the pursuit of a singular goal: obliterating sadness. Not his mind you, but everyone else's.
Basically, Maruki is not well, emotionally or mentally, despite him being able to function as a productive member of society. Completing his contract with a cosmic entity and taking the throne of the god of control, enables him to pursue his goal far beyond what he was capable as a mere doctor with a special power. He infests the human subconscious to further his goal and relentlessly tightens his grip on the world. Despite having augmented physiology in the fused metaverse as a persona user, I feel that he's a mentally ill man who's burning the candle at both ends, so to speak. I think, if anything, fully awakening to Azathoth’s power exacerbated his preexisting mental state.
To evidence my claim of Maruki’s declining illness, allow me to cite: putting a friend and confidant into a vegetative state because he couldn’t solve a moral dilemma in a month’s time, tentacling a teenage girl and brainwashing her because her dissent is a rejection of your life’s work, picking a fistfight with a high schooler while screaming about stuff unrelated to him, choosing to martyr yourself in resignation to your own suffering when you have the power to avert it.
Imagine a world where Maruki became the new ruler of the Cognitive World, but acted in a more limited capacity that is more in line with his original research, than the extreme conclusion of it. Consider him acting more like the collective subconscious's guardian angel than the god of control, possibly with the blessing of the Phantom Thieves. I think that’s more what a sane Maruki would settle on, feeling responsible to use the powers he was granted by his contract with an outer god.
With that out of the way, let’s discuss the way that Maruki implements his agenda.
While working at Shujin, Maruki isn't anything particularly special as a counselor, as it's neither something that he's particularly skilled at, nor is it something that he's passionate for. It's more or less a case of his job being something that he is qualified to do.
We know that his real passion was cognitive psience research. In essence, he's a scientist over a health professional, even though the funding for his area of expertise was slashed to bits forcing him to take an alternate career path. Especially early on, the way he’d approach his job would certainly be influenced by his passion. To that end, I think you need to analyze his session with Yoshizawa from a research perspective. He rewrote her cognition to be that of her sister’s because he thought it would help her move on. His actions here were absolutely unethical, as he was experimenting on a minor without guardian consent or full disclosure of information, but initial results of his cognition rewrite were positive (especially in the short-term, despite Yoshizawa struggling more in the long term than she otherwise may have).
"Kasumi" in a lot of ways is a proof of concept for the world he creates in the third semester, even if she isn't necessarily an optimally-functioning prototype. Now, I think Maruki was definitely acting as a bad counselor, and a "mad psientist", if you'll allow my pun, in the flashback. In the third semester however, there's no validity in examining him as a counselor, as he's not actively doing counseling. You can't even really examine him under the lens of ethical science, as he's essentially beyond morality. The man has the power to massively warp reality, raise the dead and alter memories. Essentially, his powers are such that only the end result of any action he takes really matters. If Maruki were to harm or kill someone, regardless of intent, he could make it never happen. So, only the ends of his actions can really be taken into account.
The ends of his actions are, of course, to obliterate human misery, and he proved effective at this. The exceptions being Sumire Yoshizawa (albeit before the full implementation of his agenda) and himself (his palace is the Laboratory of Sorrow after all.) I guess what I'm getting at here is that, Maruki has to be judged as a god for all of his actions in the third semester, as that’s really the only lens applicable to his role there.
With that in mind, the questionable actions that he takes in the third semester are basically just holding Akechi’s life hostage and forcing Yoshizawa to be Kasumi. He avoids physical altercation with the Phantom Thieves until they literally approach him with a mutual agreement of force. The Akechi situation is one that Maruki claims to be unintentional, and I do believe him. I think the awkwardness of that reveal is more due to Maruki’s social ineptitude and difficulty revealing that sensitive piece of information than it is anything nefarious. As for the Kasumi situation, Maruki has every ability to revive the real Kasumi and adjust Sumire’s life to become one more satisfying to her. In the end I think that that unfortunate situation has more to do with an ill man with unlimited power unable to distance Yoshizawa’s rejection of his initial gift as a personal sleight to everything he’s spent his life working towards. With his work being pretty much the only thing he’s currently attributed meaning to in his life his swift rejection of dissent makes a little more sense.
This leads to something I consider mandatory, Yoshizawa needs to rebel against the fate Maruki assigned to her, or every member of the Phantom Thieves would be working against their and all of humanity’s best interests.
I think no one would disagree with me when I say that his role in the third semester is that of a god antithetical to the themes of Persona 5, and thus narratively has to be deposed for a satisfying conclusion. Looking objectively at his grand plan however, even with his hiccups, I can’t really say he’s wrong, even if his implementation isn’t as clean as I (or even himself in a better frame of mind) would like.

Image of letter transcript
Fia - 17/04/2020
As you may have noticed, we’re trying to make our blog more accessible by adding image description and transcripts to help out the visually impaired, to keep the formatting of the last post and prevent it from getting too long, I'm posting the transcript of Fia’s letter in a separate post here. I really hope some of you could take the time to read/listen to it - it’s wonderfully written and powerfully presented, and definitely worth your time.
Dear Mr Breithaupt,
I am sure you are aware that historically, women have been excluded time and time again from the field of science, and especially physics. But even though they were often unwelcome in this area, the ones who were passionate enough always found a way to learn about physics and make their own significant discoveries, whether this be by working unpaid in basements at the time when women weren’t allowed in laboratories, or by moving across continents and away from their families in order to pursue an education that they would not otherwise have been permitted to have. One such example of this is the great physicist Lise Meitner. Having been taught by Ludwig Boltzmann and Max Planck, Meitner worked in Berlin alongside German chemist Otto Hahn in the team that accidentally discovered nuclear fission in the quest for transuranium elements, by bombarding samples of uranium-235 with neutrons – which led to the then baffling formation of lighter elements. Unfortunately due to her Jewish origins, she had to flee Nazi Germany in 1938, but this did not stop her from keeping in touch with her team about the research. And what few people are aware of is that she was the one who realised that fission of the nucleus had occurred, and she was the one who explained it as such, and who linked it to the concept of binding energy, and who therefore understood how and why an enormous amount of energy was released in the process. However, she was not recognised for her achievement, as Otto Hahn, who eventually won the 1945 Nobel prize for it, did not include her as a co-author when he published their research – which can be understood given her origins and the political state of Germany at the time. But this has led to Meitner often being left out of a narrative that she significantly helped to build, and having her achievements downplayed or uncredited. Let us not forget that throughout her entire career, she was nominated for the Nobel Prize a total of 48 times. Lise Meitner was undoubtedly an exceptional scientist with a brilliant mind, who dedicated her life to physics, and reading about her I found her incredibly inspiring.
So you can imagine my disappointment when I opened your textbook to the section about nuclear fission only to find that there was not one mention of her contribution. And maybe this would have been fine if none of the scientists involved had been mentioned (something I have seen textbooks do before). But that is not the case, because Otto Hahn and his fellow chemist Fritz Strassman were. So my question is, why isn’t Lise Meitner? Her contribution to this discovery is certainly considerable and I find it unacceptable that she is completely left out of a textbook published in our day and age when the important part she played should be well known (and yet it isn’t by most). Because maybe this seemingly small detail doesn’t make such a difference to the majority of physics students, but when we look at the numbers, the proportion of girls my age and lower going into physics is strikingly low. A study by New Scientist indicated that in 2018, the ratio of girls to boys taking A-Level Physics was 1:3. And one of the key reasons why girls are discouraged to pursue this subject is the lack of representation. Counting through the index of your textbook, I have found that only one female scientist (Marie Curie, who is basically presented as the only role model for women in science) is mentioned as opposed to 28 male scientists – but that ratio may be even lower considering that Hahn and Strassman are not actually to be found in the index. Of course, this textbook is written to fit a specification which aims to cover the discoveries that are most relevant to the course, which as it happens were mostly made by men – since as I mentioned earlier, men were from the beginning at the centre of scientific progress and discovery. And I want to make it clear that I do not ask that all textbooks be rewritten to include more of women’s discoveries in the field, since that would defeat the ultimate goal of a textbook which is to provide an appropriate educational foundation in the science. But what I do ask is that we do not leave out the women who were there, who contributed to those key discoveries that pupils like me learn about. Because too many studies have shown that girls and women do not receive enough support in the STEM fields, and if we could make at least this small change in how we teach science, I believe it would make a significant difference – and even if only one girl makes up her mind to go into physics as a result of this, it will have been worth the effort. And in a best case scenario, maybe this could be the start of something bigger leading to the inclusion of more girls and women in STEM.
Going back to the original issue, I believe Lise Meitner is one of those scientists that deserve a mention in this textbook. As should the accomplished French mathematician and physicist Émilie du Châtelet, who showed that kinetic energy is directly proportional to the square of the velocity, proving even the great Isaac Newton wrong who thought that kinetic energy and momentum (mv) were one and the same. And in the Astrophysics optional section, so should the astronomers Annie Jump Cannon, who developed the system of classification of stars by spectral class (O, B, A, F, G, K, M), and Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin who determined the composition of stars in what was described as “the most brilliant PhD thesis ever written in astronomy”. These are only a few examples, and I am sure there are more that deserve to be included just as much as those 28 (and more) male scientists do.
Although I won’t pursue physics at university, I can safely say that I have truly enjoyed the A-Level physics course. But I didn’t always, and I have my amazing teacher to thank for constantly encouraging me and challenging me to improve and refine my skills, and most importantly inspiring me with her love and passion for her subject. She is proof that role models matter, in the same way that I look up to the many female scientists that I have had to research and read about in my own time since they were not rightfully included in my education. We cannot go back to change the centuries worth of discrimination that women have faced in science and in society in general, but there are generations of girls and women to come for whom we can and must make a difference. They deserve to learn about the women who played significant roles in shaping our world as it is today – and so do the boys and men, because if we want to make a change in how women are treated in our world we will need their help, too. And after all, science is for everyone, so everyone who wishes to go into science deserves a fair chance; and that includes appropriate representation, which means we need to hear the stories of more female scientists, not just Marie Curie’s.
Of course in practice I can see how the current A-Level textbook might not be rewritten any time soon since it already provides a very good basis for the physics course. But I urge you to please consider this for the next time you have to write such a textbook (and in general), because it is an important cause – for me, and for all the girls and women who like me have the potential to become incredible scientists, if only given the same level of inspiration and encouragement that boys and men have been receiving from the beginning.
Sincerely,
(Fia)

Five Ways to Succeed as a Part-Time Personal Trainer
What comes to mind when you think of a part-time trainer? Chances are, it’s someone who teaches Zumba classes for $20 an hour—a perfectly respectable gig, but probably not someone you’d consider a professional coach, much less a fitness expert.
We reserve those designations for full-time trainers and coaches, who spend their days “in the trenches,” working long hours with clients and athletes.
That’s certainly the most common way to succeed in the fitness industry, and I firmly believe every personal trainer should work full-time for at least a couple of years. You have to get your reps in.
But if full-time training was the only option for a rewarding career, I would’ve left the industry a long time ago.
Instead, I’ve been a part-time personal trainer and strength and conditioning coach for 10 years and counting, following two full-time years in the gym.
I’m lot alone. Lots of talented trainers and coaches work part-time, for lots of reasons. For parents of young children, it’s a way to balance work and family. For others, it’s a way to pursue a passion for training without depending on it for their living. And for some, like me, it’s a way to have complementary careers as a trainer and writer.
I’ll start there, with the benefits I get from training part-time, and then talk about how you can combine two passions without compromising either one.
Four benefits of part-time coaching
I split my time as a coach (30 percent of my income) with being a health, fitness, and nutrition writer (70 percent of my income). Without coaching, the rest of my life wouldn’t be nearly as good. Namely:
I go to bed at a reasonable hour
As long as clients want to train before dawn, trainers will have to get out of bed before dawn. That forces me to go to bed early, and when I get up early, I get more done.
I get out of the house
If not for coaching, I’d spend my entire day staring at a computer screen. Training clients keeps me social for a couple hours to start my morning.
I stay fit
As they say, the hardest part of working out is showing up. Because I’m already at the gym, it’s easy to tack on a workout after two to three hours of coaching.
I have more to write about
Because I write about fitness and nutrition, coaching improves my knowledge, which improves my writing. The converse is also true: The research I do for my writing makes me a better coach.
That’s why part-time coaching works for me. But my version is just one of many possible career paths. Here are five more.

Five ways to make part-time coaching work for you
If you’re currently training clients in person full-time, adding a complementary service is the best way to transition to fewer hours in the gym.
1. In-person + online personal training
Most people who sign up for the Online Trainer Academy want to continue coaching some of their clients in person. They just don’t want to do it for 10 to 12 hours a day anymore. Online personal training is the perfect solution.
There are two ways to combine the two systems:
Hybrid personal training, in which you do most of your coaching online, but see those clients in person at regular intervals to do assessments, teach new exercises, and keep their form and intensity on track.
A new and separate online training business, in which you coach some clients in person and others remotely.
However you do it, one of the biggest benefits is also one of the biggest challenges: Coaching clients remotely works a much different part of your brain. You have to be able to anticipate and head off potential problems, and give your clients a lot more information up front than you do when training them face to face.

2. Fitness + nutrition coaching
Similar to online personal training, nutrition coaching gives you a new option to offer your current clients, along with the opportunity to work with new clients anywhere in the world. And some of those nutrition clients may become personal training clients.
The complementary nature of the two services gives you an opportunity to offer either as an upsell to the other, or to combine them in a premium coaching package. It’s a win for clients who need help in both areas, as well as a way to make more money with less marketing.
Before you offer nutrition coaching, you’ll want to get certified. I highly recommend becoming a Precision Nutrition Level 1 coach. You can complete the online course in about three to six months, working at your own pace, and learn everything from the basics of human nutrition to how to coach clients.

3. Fitness + life coaching
As personal trainers, we get our clients for an hour a day at most. They have more success when we delve into the other 23 hours of their day—what they eat, how much they sleep, what kind of stress they experience. A good workout helps, but it’s just the tip of the iceberg for most of the people we train.
One solution is to add lifestyle coaching as part of a more all-encompassing service.
While there are countless courses out there, I recommend OPEX Fitness education. It teaches you how to administer lifestyle consults with your clients; you’ll cover nutrition, stress, and sleep, and delve into the client’s true purpose.

4. Fitness + cooking and meal prep
I have a good friend who’s both a chef and a personal trainer. She spends three days a week coaching and two days cooking healthy lunches and dinners for her clients.
Not only does she make a great living, she gets to combine her passion for training with her passion for cooking. She also mixes in nutrition and lifestyle coaching, all for the same people she trains in the gym. And, because she prepares their meals herself, she makes it easier for them to stick with her program.
5. Fitness + consulting, marketing, and/or business coaching
Another friend splits her time between personal training and working for fitness and nutrition companies on their social media. While her desk job, like mine, requires specialized skills, her coaching knowledge and experience bring value to the brands she works with.
Your fitness career can set you up for work in complementary disciplines like marketing, consulting, or business coaching. If you’re good at it, and if it helps other people reach their goals, there’s a good chance someone will pay you for it.
Selling is the lynchpin for all these endeavors. It’s the most universally applicable skill. To sell, you have to be bold and reach out to the people you can help. The more people you help, the bigger your network becomes, and with a bigger network, you’ll find more growth opportunities to expand beyond personal training.
I recommend taking a sales course if you aren’t yet confident with your ability. The one I took, Sandler Sales Training, taught me that selling is simply a conversation to see if you have a solution to the other person’s problem.

Final thoughts
The fitness profession offers endless ways to use your knowledge and skills outside the gym. These career-building steps will open those pathways:
Begin with a solid foundation in exercise science, human movement, and nutrition. You don’t necessarily need a college degree, but you should have an accredited certification, bolstered by continuing education.
Work with real human beings—the more diverse, the better. There’s no substitute for practical, hands-on training experience.
Become excellent at sales, and develop a basic understanding of the business side of the industry, especially marketing and brand-building.
Build your network, and look for opportunities to pursue a passion and bring value to clients or companies.
Once you’re a solid, credentialed, experienced fitness professional, there’s no reason you can’t also be a solid pro in something else, and combine the two to create a fulfilling and lucrative career.

The Beauty of Social Sciences
Journal Entry # 3
Danah Mae Malinay
“The Roles of Social Science Practitioners in the Past, Present and Future”
The seminar forum was an opportunity to expose ourselves with people who are at the peak of their careers. The guest speakers were invited to discuss their careers, and each represented categories within the Social Sciences. A politician, a sister, an Anchor Broadcaster, and a Teacher.
The guest speakers were Hon. Vic De Jesus, the Vice Governor of the province of South Cotabato, Sr. Marie Han. Alo, the Oblates of Notre Dame of Marbel University, Mr. Rey Legario, the anchor of RMN Radio Station, and Mr. Jayson Troy F. Bajar, Faculty of NDMU.
The person who caught my attention in the forum was, Hon. Vic De Jesus, the Vice Governor of the province of South Cotabato. He was the first to introduce himself, a man who never expected himself to be involved into politics. He talked about his journey through his career and learned how he took the opportunity and nevertheless expected himself to be passionate about it. It took me by surprise when he showed a side of politics where it wasn’t stereotyped to be corrupted. Yes, the game of politics is dirty, but the forum opened a path of understanding that people in politics do strive for the betterment of our country.
Mr. Rey Legario, gave his own insights as well about how it is their duty to give the truth to the people. It’s their duty to question everything on what goes on in their country, risking themselves for the sale of truth. He made me understand the importance of what goes on with things that people aren’t aware of. Sr. Marie, too also has their thoughts and opinions about what goes on in the government, even for the fact that what she does not involve any help coming from the government.
These three representatives of their field of expertise had one goal, they all do it for the people. Yes, our opinions are different to each category, but we can’t deny the fact that these representatives were genuine to what they want to give for the people, and what benefits the people.
As the forum went on to discuss every category of profession present in the seminar forum, I gained insights of each category and learned to appreciate the existence of social sciences. It gave me light to be more involved and maybe someday, pursue a career like theirs.

Juvie Garde
It was a Friday morning at seven in the lorning when I decided to go to school for our seminar forum, together with the other HUMSS students, I felt really excited and nervous at the same time. I was excited in a sense that we had the chance to be with other HUMSS students and to socialize with them, and nervous in a sense that this program is new to me. Frankly, I had no idea what the program is all about. When we finally entered the SMC Hall I was in shock when I saw the tarpaulin, because one of the guest speaker was a very popular person, especially here in Koronadal City. The other one is also a well-known Radio Broadcaster in Koronadal City, and lastly one of the sisters in our school, was also invited to that Seminar Forum. That made me more excited because we all know that those people are very busy especially in their own fields, but still they gave their precious time to share their knowledge to us.
Politics, Church, and Media plays a very big role in our society, without these three what would our community look like? I can’t even imagine. Entering politics nowadays is very crucial because in some instances, they might die if they will run for the election. Some reasons, is that other politicians needs to be on that high position because of the salary the they can get, because they can steal money that is intended to their community, another reason can be, is that they want to be powerful as God. The church entered in the discussion. The church also plays a big role in a sense that it can make us people critically think that are we really voting for the best and not just an average? The Church always taught us that we people was created in the image and likeness of God, but are we really enough to be known as that? Because for me, we are not worthy to be known for that, especially to those politicians who put God’s name just for them to look very religious. And lastly the people in the Media, who is very influential in terms of reporting legit news specially in politics, for me being a broadcaster is not an easy job, you need to be strong as rock to surpass every challenges that you will face along the way. One of the threats of being a broadcaster is the Death Threats that they can get because of the reports that they are making.
“The Roles of Social Science Practitioners in the Past, Present and Future”, this theme talks about our next generation, what would our generation look like if we, the people in our current time, are not well educated enough, especially on what is happening to us. We the past, present and future are the only hope of our next generation. We need to educate ourselves in order for us to be globally competitive. And that is the main reason why we are having this seminar forum with the people who are very influential. And lastly thank you for our subject teacher Mr. Jayson Bajar for the effort just for us to make this program more memorable.

Mellen Salo
Panel discussion was held with the theme of “The Roles of Social Science practitioners in the Past, Present and Future”. They discussed and shared to us their roles and connection to our society. The guest speaker Mr. Jayson troy Bajar ask the question to the three panellists “ What is the importance of Social Science”? Hon. Vic De Jesus, the Vice Governor Province of South Cotabato answered that “As a leader the importance of Social Science in our community, is you must give to people what they really need, our first priority is health and scholarships for the students to give them the chance to go to school.” Sr. Marie Han. Alo, DND, the Oblates of Notre Dame of Marbel University answered that “We also support the lack of government, also we are trying to do our best to help people, educate children, give livelihood program and we give opportunities and privilege to people”. Lastly Mr Rey Legario, the anchor of RMN Radio Station answered that, “We are always asking questions to government like is the project and happenings in our society. We are doing our very best to do our job even though being part of media is not easy but it is so challenging and some of us is called, "Bayaran na Media”“. this program help me and made me realize, that we live in a society without knowing what is happening in our surroundings. I also learned from them that if I choose my course or future goals I need to be practical, be true to my self and follow my passion, put God first always, don’t be afraid, be humble between knowing yourself, be a servant leader, maintain integrity, be confident, use your learning in school and also have a direction and clear vision in life because if you have all of this nothing is impossible.

Nadia Bidara
On November 16, 2018, we had an open Forums in theme “The role of social science practitioners in the past, present, and future.” The panellists were:
Hon. Vic DE Jesus. The Vice Governor, Province of South Cotabato. Sr. Marietta ALO, OND. The oblate of Notre Dame. Mr. Rey Legario. The Anchor, RMN radio station.
It’s a great experience for me because I gained more knowledge for the things they’ve mention, actually this seminar helped me think of what I wanted to become because of their inspiring story of their past and how they reached their positions now. They give us tips on how we deal or how we choose our future careers, because we never know what will happen in the near future.
What I liked about this seminar is that we’re given a chance to witness and listen to the life of these three persons, who has a name in our society and involvement in the social sciences field.
FEAR IS CHOOSING A SAFE COURSE.
In choosing our course we must identify where we are good at, and when we find out, the next step is to identify our passion because you can’t do that without passion. An example can be when you’re engaging yourself in a relationship without love is useless and will not last long. Next is our patience, this is the one of the most important things to remember in fulfilling your dreams in life. Choosing your course is like choosing your future someday, so we need to think and plan for the better future. In every step we take in our lives, we must need to be thankful for Allah SWT/God, pray always, trust him, be yourself, trust yourself, that whatever happens in the future, you can do it and be the one of the graduate students of this institution in line with a Social Sciences studies.

“If you can dream it, you can it”
Hannah Katrina Tancio
We are obliged to wear business or any formal attire for the seminar that is held in SMC Hall of Notre Dame of Marbel University. We had these three guest speakers representing the world of politics, religious life, and the world of medias. They were asked about their personal experiences about politics, religious life and being part of Medias. They explained their side about what threat do the Media and Politics receive. Politicians and Media personnel are sometimes consider mortal enemies, in the other hand Politicians and Religious life are often times considered mortal enemies. Politics do their best shot for the people, Medias gives facts to give awareness to people, and religious life they serve other people and keep spreading good news from the word of God. They are selfless.

Liesel’s File
Name:
Liesel Monika Erskine
Aliases:
Lizzie
Nick
Agent 0
Elizabeth Vanderbilt
Age:
97 / 32 (appearance)
Occupations:
SSR scientist / Ballerina / Fashion designer/ (Formerly)
SHIELD’s textile engineer; suit designer
Early Life
Born in June 20th, 1920, Augsburg, Germany. The third child of her family, Liesel proved to be a really curious little one, usually bombarding her father with numerous questions whenever he mentioned something about his works. Gifted with a great memory, it wouldn’t be a surprise if she ended up learning many things on her own.
However, she would end up falling in love with the one thing she wasn’t gifted at: dance.
Her family, especially her sister, would repeatedly suggest her to pursue something else, they managed to convince her, she followed her father’s steps as an aspiring chemist. But her passion didn’t change.
No matter how much effort it would take, she wanted to be a ballet dancer and that was final. In order to achieve that, her scientific interests would be pushed aside.
After enduring years of endless practice and failure, she finally got accepted into a good school in London, the place where she’d have her first contact with the world of fashion.
Project Rebirth
During her stay in England, she annually recieved one letter from her family, but after 1935, they simply stopped coming. Both scared and devastated, Liesel considered going back to Germany, until she got an explanation, in the form of a letter from a Josef Reinstein- her father using an alias- it urged her to come to the United States, which she complied in October of 1942, under the guise of a presentation.
There, while assisting her father finish the serum, he made her promise she’d remain silent about all the information, especially the formula, no matter what. She wasn’t present when the project unfolded. Although successful, it was sabotaged, resulting in her father’s death. The news that turned the young woman in a paranoid mess, would reach her through Howard Stark and Peggy Carter, people whom she would eventually warm up to and work with, after the shock and grief were worn away.
Creating Tech
With her family taken away, she could either return to London and be an easy target, or she could try working with SSR as a scientist building new gadgets for the field agents, she decided to stay. Upon the time working with Stark, Liesel reached a financial stability and climbed up more and more steps of the social ladder. She found out how to recreate the technology used in Project Rebirth, Vita-Ray chamber and all. Then, she retired from the SSR.
Project Coppelia
As soon as she had retired, Liesel would spend the following year in her safe house basement recreating and upgrading the components of Operation Rebirth, in order to conduct what she named as Project Coppelia, where she would take a dose of her variation of the serum. It was successful at a cost, she’d have to either destroy everything or find a way to hide it all, so HYDRA wouldn’t pick on it.
Meanwhile
Since she had her first contact with work, Liesel was more than eager about the chance of having a degree. Both the ballet and science careers surely were promising, but she wanted more, wanted to build, to lead a glamourous life. All these goals were reached within the fashion career.
Working at SHIELD
Upon Howard Stark’s death, the paranoia episodes about being a target resurfaced, resulting in spending her time building security technologies for her own use.
One early morning, she contacted SHIELD offering to secretly work for them in exchange for protection. Luckily, she was accepted. Under the name of Agent 0, she recieved a regular agent training. Given her past in the SSR and her abilities as a designer, Liesel was selected to work in the uniform division, projecting new gadgets and suits to accomodate each wearer’s powers and skills. She has lived in a classified location ever since.

The Women Behind Promo
In honor of International Women’s Day, we want to showcase just a few of the amazing women who work tirelessly behind the scenes at Promo to make an exceptional product and bring it to our users. We believe that Women’s Day is every day because women are such an integral part of our workplace and the world it simply isn’t enough to spend only one day shining a light on the accomplishments of half our population.
With that, it is our pleasure to give an extra nod to the females taking the tech world by storm. In what still is considered a man’s game, our start-up is lucky to have the talent of these ladies and the other women who are currently and will eventually join our greater Promo family to make the best creative content product and bring it to market.
Tamar Garfunkel,
Senior Marketing Manager
How did you arrive in your profession?
After studying music, I was looking for something that has a creative side but also something more analytical and business oriented. I discovered the world of tech in college. When my startup needed someone to take on more of a marketing role, I welcomed the opportunity and found that if I was looking for something analytical and creative – this was it.
What is the most exciting part of your job?
When you work hard on a campaign, a new hack or problem you’re trying to solve, and you see that it’s successful, it’s an adrenaline rush. Even in a hyper-growth environment, where you’re faced with many challenges to overcome, at the end of the day it’s all about people. It’s about finding them, speaking to them with a message they can relate to, providing them with value and doing all that in the easiest way possible for them to take action.
How do you see being a woman affect your work/professional life?
I think women have a lot of strength, resilience and patience, and an ability to listen and learn. When I was just starting out, my first boss was an amazing woman and mentor. She would bring me in on meetings that weren’t even related to what I was doing. She told me, “This is your time to keep your ears wide open, listen, it’s not about talking and making statements, it’s about taking it all in and learning”. I’ve tried to implement that in nearly every new environment and new field I’ve entered.
Where do you hope to see women professionally by 2030?
The playing field is getting more and more leveled already. As women we need to be more united and judge each other less. Some women want to invest themselves in careers, some in a family, and some are trying to find the balance. We need to respect each others’ choices and ways of life and try to incorporate these different types of work-life balance in the workplace. The more we have workplaces that make room for these different models of life, for both men and women, the more we pave the way for women’s success.
Adi Avital,
Project Manager
How did you arrive in your profession?
I studied political science and after completing my degree began working as a project manager at a smaller company and grew from there.
What is the most exciting part of your job?
I really enjoy the process of initiating new projects based on ideas and methods that we haven’t tested before. That’s why the start-up environment is such a great fit for me. I have the freedom to learn new fields and help grow our business with every new project.
How do you see being a woman affect your work/professional life?
Being a woman has only been an advantage in my professional life. I possess the more “female” qualities such as being friendly, creative, a quick learner and adaptive. I think these are the qualities that have allowed me to succeed thus far.
Where do you hope to see women professionally by 2030?
I hope to only see more leaders, more working mothers, and more female entrepreneurs. The sky’s the limit.
Ester Rabinovich,
Senior QA
How did you arrive in your profession?
I worked in a similar field when serving in the military.
What is the most exciting part of your job?
I really enjoy working closely with my team and collaborating in order to achieve all of our targets.
How do you see being a woman affect your work/professional life?
There are many challenges, especially in tech and within technology such a male-dominated field.
Where do you hope to see women professionally by 2030?
I hope to see women in every role and every position with as much professional and expertise diversity as men.
Hila Shitrit Nissim,
VP Marketing
How did you arrive in your profession?
I always liked sales and marketing. But I think it really started during my military service when I served as a PR agent in the IDF Spokesperson unit. It was an amazing education for marketing, media relations, and large project management. From there, I just moved from one role to another, while completing my B.A in Economics and MBA (with a focus on Strategic Marketing). I was always passionate about storytelling, content creation and customer-facing activities, so I believe that’s what led me to where I am today.
What is the most exciting part of your job?
I am excited about all aspects of brand building, creating the story behind our company and conveying our message in a clear consistent way. Every opportunity to communicate with our users is exciting to me, be it via our content, our ads or our emails. We really want them to know that we are here to help them grow their business and we will do whatever it takes to help them succeed.
How do you see being a woman affect your work/professional life?
I do not feel any effect and I believe I never have.
Where do you hope to see women professionally by 2030?
I hope to see more women in technology professions and in management positions. We already see it happening today.
Tovah Coldham,
Community & Content Marketing Manager
How did you arrive in your profession?
I wanted to find a more creative outlet to use my writing skills & connect with people and after working in journalism I stumbled upon the joy of social media.
What is the most exciting part of your job?
I can’t pick just one so I will limit it to two:
I love the teamwork in developing and executing creative content that will help our users. And, I love every opportunity I get to speak directly with our users and learn how Promo helps them. This community building and communicating in order to improve gets me inspired.
How do you see being a woman affect your work/professional life?
I always try to approach work by first listening, thinking, and then acting. I think that because I’m a woman, people might view those as “weaker” traits, but I disagree. I think that’s what empowers my creative process and allows me to give more to each project.
Where do you hope to see women professionally by 2030?
I would love to see a more equal balance of women in all positions throughout all industries and equal pay for all of us. Also a powerful female president…of course.
Noa Turgeman,
Office Manager
How did you arrive in your profession?
I really enjoy helping solve problems and organize groups of people in a rewarding way. The jobs began to fall into place because of my skill set and I really enjoyed it so I continued to pursue this career.
What is the most exciting part of your job?
The feeling of accomplishing a task, no matter how big or small, gives me a lot of satisfaction. Also, providing a work environment that allows for our employees to feel taken care of matters most to me and any task that supports that end goal is motivating.
How do you see being a woman affect your work/professional life?
Being a woman and a mother in the workplace allows me to have balance and perspective when I’m helping my co-workers, which ultimately is my job. I have the perspective of the entire life experience of our employees and work to support them in all aspects of life through what we can provide at work.
Where do you hope to see women professionally by 2030?
I know that we will see more and more women taking on management roles in the future and I look forward to that time.
Yael Klass,
Content Lead
How did you arrive in your profession?
I trained in the creative arts and always had a passion for both writing and technology so once I learned how creative you can be with the right product in the marketing sphere, I was hooked.
What is the most exciting part of your job?
Content and social media are constantly evolving, and I really mean constantly. I love getting inspired by tastemakers and pushing myself to try new and innovative ideas to see what kinds of stories will make the most impact.
How do you see being a woman affect your work/professional life?
I have read a great deal of literature on the subject and it’s clear that a man and woman can say the same thing and often it is questioned out of a woman’s mouth as if it were an experiment and taken as fact coming from a man. I work on having the confidence in meetings and via email to say what I think without any sort of minimization around it and stand behind my experience and professional knowledge.
I’ve also tried the Chrome Plug-In Just Not Sorry which I think is genius. It points out when you are typing apologetic text by underlining it, thus triggering you to question if it’s needed and make more declarative statements.
Where do you hope to see women professionally by 2030?
My hope in 2030 is that articles such as this one and the likely other avalanche of such content becomes obsolete. I hope my daughter is so removed from the idea of experiencing gender differences in her professional life that our conversations in 2018 almost appear silly.

A Message From Our Founder, Cynthia Brian
Summertime and the living is easy or perhaps easier, at least that’s what the songs tell us. Kids are out of school, families enjoy vacations, barbecues, concerts, and cookouts. Interestingly for many of the volunteers of Be the Star You Are!®, we are busier than usual reading books, writing reviews, planning radio broadcasts, and working on new book projects. Since spring, eleven new teen book reviewers have joined our STAR Book Review Team and our Book Review Coordinator, Maria Wong is posting new reviews daily. Read reviews at http://www.btsya.com/book_reviews.html. Chelsea Pelchat, our Teen Event Coordinator planned a pop-up orchestra recital on Saturday, July 15th at 2:30pm at Aegis Living in Moraga, California with our musician volunteers. More info at http://www.bethestaryouare.org/events .Elizabeth Aquilar, our Newsletter Director, continues to assemble this monthly circular in between her exciting travels. Read about her latest adventure here.
I am busy proofing the final publishers copy of my new book, Growing with the Goddess Gardener, with pre-orders available now at http://www.cynthiabrian.com/books. 25% of the proceeds from the book will benefit BTSYA. Our most exciting news is our work on the third book in the Be the Star You Are!® series, Be the Star You Are!® for Millennials, with extraordinarily poignant chapters from 30+ BTSYA volunteers, supporters, and radio personalities. 100% of all proceeds will be directly donated to BTSYA to continue our uplifting, life-enhancing literacy and positive media message programs. This is a gift of love is keeping me very occupied with writing, editing, proofing, and communicating with our talented contributors. In 2018 we will base the themes of our weekly radio broadcasts on StarStyle®-Be the Star You Are!® and Express Yourself!™ Teen Radio to a specific chapter in the book, inviting authors and experts with complementary ideas. It is going to be a spectacular season and the book is going to be a fabulous read.
We will again have a booth at the Pear and Wine Festival in September and are seeking sponsors. Thinking ahead to our 20th anniversary in 2019, we are in search of a talented event coordinator to help us celebrate. If that person is you, please email me at Cynthia@BetheStarYouAre.org.

TIPS ON STAYING COOL THIS SUMMER
1. Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water. Avoid alcohol and caffeine when it’s hot as they cause dehydration.
2. Use sunscreen every day and reapply as directed.
3. Wear a hat and cotton clothing.
4. Avoid sports and high-energy activities when it’s really hot, especially mid day.
5. Take a dip in the pool, wade in a river, swim in a lake, play in the sea, or just take a cool shower.
6. Relax in the shade. A cold cloth around your neck helps.
7. Keep ceiling fans on, close draperies and window treatments during the heat of the day. Open windows for cross ventilation when the temperatures are lower at night.
8. Make sure your pets have plenty of water.
Enjoy this wonderful season of the year when you can be outside in nature.
6 MINUTE VACATIONS
By Karen Kitchel
Summer disappears so quickly that we all need to pack in as much vacation time as possible. While trips to faraway places are nice, our bodies and souls can use fun breaks far more often than we can pack a suitcase.
Consider taking a six-minute vacation every day this summer. Begin by making a list of the little things you enjoy doing like eating an ice cream cone, picking some wildflowers, listening to your two favorite songs, looking at vacation photos from years ago, or closing your eyes and imagining you are in Bora Bora enchanted by the turquoise water. Then take that list and schedule six minute vacations on your calendar for every day that's left of summer.
You just might find these six minutes every day are your favorite part of summer.
Karen Kitchel is passionate about helping those in need. As President of the Cheerful Givers nonprofit organization, she helped to bring birthday gifts to more than one million less fortunate children. Prior to that, she created a corporate university at BI Worldwide. Currently she serves meals to the homeless, is a job coach, teacher, writer and mentor. Somewhat Sleepless in SeattleAn Update from Liz Aguilar Leaving home again to start up research wasn't easy after having a month of vacation at home. While I loved the idea of traveling again, I had gotten quite comfortable enjoying home, family, and friends. But the longer I explore Seattle, the more I love it more each day. I'm extremely grateful and lucky to have already made wonderful friends and to have supportive mentors working with me in lab on my research. For those of you who may not know me as well, I'm majoring in biochemistry and minoring in computer science with the hopes of someday pursuing graduate school to study computational biology. With my work, I'd love to be able to help make advances in medicine by understanding the underlying cause of genetic diseases. The University of Washington in Seattle has so far provided me with a wonderful environment to personally grow and learn from other peers who are also motivated to make a difference through their work. While research has been enjoyable, exploring the city has given me a greater appreciation for the culture and the beautiful pacific northwest. Last weekend, I went on a seven mile hike with several friends in the Bandera Mountains, which are just an hour away from the city. While the hike was long and challenging, the gorgeous views and sights were absolutely stunning. It truly reminded me of when I was back in Switzerland! I hope to continue making these memorable experiences and I hope to also share them with you. I hope you are all doing well and that you also manage to take time for yourself to enjoy this wonderful summer! p.s - Seattle hasn't had a drop of rain since late May!
