i think adrien would love saying “the horrors” someone should teach him that. as explanations for your awful mental/physical state go, it checks like all his boxes: vague, deflective, silly. “what’s wrong adrien?” “oh you know. the horrors😸” like he would love that.

Film & TV I Think About A Lot » The Fits (2015) dir. Anna Rose Holmer
You know it's gonna happen to us. Just thinking about what my sister said, you know? What do you mean? I just... I just wanna know how it feels. Aren't you scared? Yeah, but it doesn't matter. It'll happen to us anyway. It hasn't happened to any of the boys. Yeah, but we're not them.

me 1.5 drinks in: you know what I ALSO hate? that people will read Dostoevsky or Tolstoy when they want to read something “real” and “weighty” but not Austen even though she is every bit as real. this is because of sexism and other sundry reasons.

I think the ideas that
“Raven is a bad parent”
And
“Raven loves their children”
Can and should co exist. I will never sit here and say Mystique is a good parent, but I think acting like they don’t love their children is just being willfully ignorant of their characterization since the 80s.
I see a lot of people try to claim Raven doesn’t care about their kids. I actually think they care a LOT, it just, doesn’t deter their actions. And they’re not a good parent, don’t get me wrong, but that doesn’t mean they don’t love Kurt and Rogue and I think trying to claim they don’t actually does away with a lot of Raven’s character nuance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A lot of the tragedy and depth of their relationships come from the fact that Raven DOES love their children, but it’s not enough. And Kurt and Anna Marie know that, and that’s part of the tragedy of it too.
I’m not a Mystique defender, but I am a Raven Darkhölme characterization realist. A lot of people flatten their character to add more sympathy to Kurt’s story especially, which feels kinda iffy to me. But that’s for another post.
From a storytelling perspective, it adds so much more depth and tragedy to all characters involved to not make the relationship so shallow and one sided as “Oh Mystique doesn’t love them”, and even to juxtapose Raven’s relationship to them with Irene’s is a whole other thing I may talk about one day. But like, you do the story injustice to flatten it down to just “Oh Mystique sucks”
Tl;dr - Raven Darkhölme is a shitty parent but they do love their kids. And that’s the whole tragedy of the thing

last night i spent three hours total lovingly sketching doodles in pen on valentine’s cards and for my long distance friends i even sketched out pen doodles on a tiny journal so that i could send a picture to them show my love for them for valentine’s. i did such a thing for @anna-scribbles, lovingly crafting a doodle of adrien and marinette holding hands with the words “the power of love so strong” and “happy valentine’s day anna!! i love you!! 💘peach” and as i was laying down to sleep, as i had saved hers for last and was now exhausted, i saw she had sent me a valentine’s message. i opened it, excited and filled with joy. it was a picture of chat noir with the caption “my mom is dead.” happy valentine’s everybody

forgive the brief jesus chris superstar rant but. there is a very important difference between the pharisees being villains and the pharisees being antagonists. they're technically antagonists because they're actively working against the interests of our protagonist, but i don't believe they should ever be played as villains. they're not evil or bad or wrong. they're terrified just like literally everyone else in the show is, and their actions are completely justified. to me that's the entire point of the musical. it's not about christianity; it's about the impact the roman empire's brutal and violent imperialism had on everyone on all levels. including jesus and judas, but also including the pharisees, and even herod and pilate. when a powerful coloniser forces their presence on innocent people they are the only winners. everyone else suffers, even the puppet kings and high priests who look like they're reaping some sort of benefit from it all. that's roman propaganda. the romans kept native rulers like herod and caiaphas in power to maintain the illusion of provincial autonomy, and keep populations appeased and therefore under control. everyone in the show is acting out of fear of the romans. the one roman character we do see (pilate) is acting out of fear of his own emperor. it makes no sense to cast the pharisees as two dimensional Bad Guys, especially when the same productions that do that usually offer a sympathetic portrayal of pilate. it would be so easy to stage and direct a production in a way that makes it obvious that the pharisees are doing what they're doing because they truly have no choice, and not because they're pure evil and want to kill jesus for the sake of it. it's not only an antisemitic trope but also undermines a really important theme of the musical. if you can see the humanity in the violent roman governor installed forcefully on conquered land then you can afford some humanity for the pharisees too. they are victims of pilate and victims of rome just like everyone else
