I went completely bananas and wrote a full analysis of Joker Out and JO fandom stuff and situation... idk
Hi baby boos!
I’ve seen some confusion regarding JO’s latest announcements and social media activity (or lack thereof) so I've tried to analyze the current situation with a critical eye 🤓
I don't use Tumblr much so you're probably more familiar with my Twitter but I got suggested to post this here for easier reading (and... better audience in general 👀)
Long rant under the cut:
Before I begin I must point out that these are my opinions and theories. I have no idea how JO’s communication and management is being organized right now, I’m just making assumptions based on my perception as a fan 🤷♀️
(also I’m a communication graduate but my studies and current job cover this sector only tangentially so I may not know how some/most of this works…)
Let’s start with comparing last year’s situation to the current one: one year ago the boys were riding high on the wave of enthusiasm, having had a successful ESC (despite the ending placement) and having gained a lot of attention as fan favorite competitors ✨
A very high % of the growing fanbase, esp the international one, was coming directly or tangentially through ESC and how do you maintain that attention once the contest is over? you increase your social media presence and you start planning international concerts. which they did!
This constant exposure to content made the fandom flourish: we were all witnessing how easily people from everywhere could join and already feel at the very center of attention, both because JO’s communication was being very active and successful and also thanks to fanmade organizations like JokerOutSubs, group chats, old time Slovenian fans sharing juicy pre-ESC content, etc. I'll be grateful forever
We had a past year that could be divided into 2 halves in terms of communication: it all went extremely well until more or less the end of 2023 (last tour dates in Spain) and then started gradually becoming very odd and chaotic all through 2024 until last month’s complete draught
We know that they mostly tend to manage their online presence on their own, so ofc during breaks and during very busy times is harder for them to find good content to share. They had also been very clear about needing time off their phones all through the London era and the album recording in Hamburg, so that didn’t come as a surprise for fans 🤷♀️
But having very sensible, personal reasons to quit/decrease social media presence has unfortunately no meaning in communication, where the laws are very simple: once you stop sharing, you stop existing
I don’t want to criticize their choices, because they are entitled to their privacy and offline time. I’m just pointing out that this very long, hiccup-y period probably could have been avoided with better management and with the presence of a smm/pre-planned sm communication 🙃
It also unfortunately happened concurrently to the new ESC season, which was bound to “organically” erode part of the fandom anyway, and to an EU tour that, although successful, has still highlighted a lazy/bad management and yet again a communication that made little to no sense at times (es. the whole campaign that subtly asked people to go to more than one concert, which clearly made fans with less financial and logistical possibilities feel ‘lacking’ and ‘inferior’) 🙄
In their defense, the tour was to establish a fanbase more than gaining more fans and exposure, so pushing for getting more of a loyal than an occasional fanbase wasn’t completely wrong an idea… it just backfired
And it did because the greatest part of their international fanbase is made of very young people who aren’t financially independent and whose interests are bound to be fleeting and shifting ESPECIALLY when they aren’t constantly met with content production/consumption
Let’s also not forget that having completely shifted their attention to international waters at the expense of the Slovenian/regional fanbase has been very risky. We still can’t tell if the gamble was successful or not
It’s never a good idea to ignore/neglect your hardcore supporters, the very people that helped you raise to your current standards. it’s true they are the most loyal, but they are also very easily the ones that could feel more betrayed
I also think it’s very risky trying to shift the fans’ content consumption out of social media and into a (controlled, easier to manage, ofc) site like Openstage for two main reasons: as said before, complete disappearance from socials means communicational suicide and until now, the “dedicated content” directed toward fans on the site has been… too bland and generic (sorry)(they can learn how to improve that)
Openstage has other very interesting uses tho, firstly the early access to ticket sales and secondly the tracking of international fan presence, which was pretty clearly the main goal and reason why they opened the site in the first place... so it’s not ex ante a bad communication choice, just (until now) one that has yet to show its potential and usefulness
So what now? I think it’s time they make a few considerations and sensible choices to maintain what’s currently the status quo and in order to tackle festival season in the best way
They need to keep their international presence by opening their fanbase to a new kind of fans: festivals bring exposure to bands from a very specific type of fanbase, more interested in music than in contents. If they manage to capture the interest of Sziget people, for example, they could gather a new type of international fanbase less interested in the “social media” content consumption and more in the “I wanna see these guys play again, somewhere else, maybe a show of their own” way
(which, to be completely fair, could be the best choice to cure their current crazy/shifting/confusing fanbase state, giving them more peace of mind, more privacy and a more “normal” rock band experience than the one they had in the past year… that we can all agree has been pretty bad at times)
I personally think this summer season must go in the quantity direction (gaining more new fans) and at the same time in the quality direction (less shows, bigger stages) and this is why some of you are disappointed in seeing so little shows compared to last year or to the SYS tour... I get it
Many of us, me included, won’t be seeing JO live for the whole summer season, and I’m aware that is disappointing, but I hope this analysis has helped you put things into perspective and consider maybe one of the possible reasons why this next phase for Joker Out is being organized this way
I’m still hoping they’ll find a good compromise with their social media communication, because right now I really feel that being the main issue with the gradual but constant drop in traction (please boys hire a smm. i adore jan’s sad edits and the unhinged video and stories like the next person but serious work has to be done too)
Ending the rant on a note of hope: I wish to see you all enjoy the summer and the content to come and I hope for the boys to have a successful, fun season full of new experiences, new music, new people, fresh ideas for the future. I’m honestly very excited for what’s to come! 🌻

HELLO JAMES MENLOVE how are you this fine day. I have a very important question to ask, do you have any tips on writing an accurate Paul voice in fanfic? I’m trying to write Baby’s First Beatles yaoi here and I’m struggling. TYSM 🫶
EXCITED TO SEE WHERE U GO W BABY'S FIRST BEATLES YAOI. SEND ME SO MANY UPDATES. also love the new pfp us matching mclennon icon warriors are brave
and LORD okay take this all w the "I'm american" grain of salt but! depends on the era you're writing them in really imo! like any of them, when he's younger, pre-beatlemania and especially in liverpool/hamburg, his accent was thicker. ur gonna be out here googling slang words in 1960s liverpool. but to get a better idea of His voice specifically, a lot of those early interviews and ahdn are good, but also keep in mind he was sort of like. cleaning up his accent a little for the cameras. but it's lots of contractions, but focusing on cadence/wording is better, imo, than focusing on trying to write out the accent which can get grating to look at if you have an apostrophe every other word (but that's just me). lots of glottal stops happening
during/post-beatlemania it seems like he tried to clean up his accent. out of the 4 of them, imo, his accent is the Least strong. it's turned a bit more posh as he's aged (again if I'm mishearing any of this british people you guys do have the right to kill me with hammers) & watching some of his more recent interviews or later beatles interviews gives you a good idea of that! BUT this has the bonus of- you can always have more of the liverpool accent slip back in when he's upset/excited/particularly comfortable/etc etc
if u mean Content....... what I always keep in mind is just that paul is very diplomatic. he says what he thinks will keep the boat from being rocked, esp once they hit beatlemania. so it's always fun to have him sort of think through his words, think about what he Wants to say, go hm yeah can't say that in any dignified way without Consequences, and say something else that may even be contradicting his actions. on the other hand, though, he can be a bit of a dick. esp when him and john feed off each other. lots of early days stories of him encouraging john being an ass to people and being one himself. his asshole-ry comes in a sort of blunt flavor OR a very backhanded sort of bizarre flavor. like sending people postcards saying "obey your school master" and telling people they're not good vs his weird little "who knows, yoko!" type of comments when he's Trying to be diplomatic but still wants to kick shins. I always sort of view him as being kind of oblivious to how blunt & dickish he can come off 😭 great for writing scenes w him and george honestly. so it's fun to have him say or do smth that just. from the outside is sooo shitty but since ur in his pov he's literally just not even thinking about it

Hello! Can you recommend any mcharrison fics? Preferably ones in which George bottoms? Or Paul doesn't bottom? I've only read ones in which he does and I'd like to read smth different. Thank you.
Thank you so much for asking. I'm not a big reader of mcharrison yet, and the 'no Bottom Paul' stipulation added another challenge!
But here are some fics I love that hopefully fit what you are looking for. If any mcharrison expert has more recommendations: please add them. <3
our bodies possessed by light (tell me we'll never get used to it) (hey_dorothea): Paul POV. George and Paul discover a new side to their relationship during a business meeting with Maharishi in Sweden. I love that neither of them is a 'virgin with men' when they do. This writer also wrote a novel-length fic about George and Paul, which I haven't read, but if you enjoyed this story, it might be for you.
A Wrench in Clocks (honeyheffron): To quote from the summary: Paul, John, George—forth and back, and all the ways they fit together. This ends with George and Paul together. The scene where George bottoms for Paul while John is...there (sorry, John) is one of the hottest things I read, full stop.
This also goes for No I in Threesome (@with-eyes-closed), also a John/George/Paul triangle story, this one set at the height of Beatlemania, amidst the howling chaos and merciless grind of touring, with relentless, painfully hot sexual energy between all of them— esp. George and Paul. Paul is very much not a bottom here.
Much shorter, but equally potent: Taking Control (@ohjohnnysblog). Paul discovers he likes it when George takes control.
Sherlock Starr (Anonymous): On tour. George and Paul get each other off—and George reminds Paul he doesn't always have to do all the work. Inspired by a very interesting photo!
sorry about the blood in your mouth (I wish it was mine) (stargiirl27). Hamburg. George and Paul fight, and then fuck. They like it. They lie there together, disgusting and bloody and covered in come. Plus protesting German neighbors.
Years Since it's Been Clear (@boshemians): Strictly speaking not mcharrison, but Paul & George, but a great relationship story nonetheless. Similar to:
Hear Them Say (@boshemians): George is sick before the Beatles' American TV debut in 1964. This is about George's relationship with the band as a whole, and with John and Paul separately, with mclennon in the background (and—discreetly!—in the next bed), but I'm putting it here because I enjoy the George POV a lot.
(as always, I don't know everyone's tumblr, so feel free to let me know so I can tag where appropriate. Thank you.)

Quote
Seventeen-year-old Frank Sellman was one of the Beatles' new fans. [...] "It was nothing less than a revolution for children born at the end of the war to be out in such places, a real liberation. The strip shows in St. Pauli intrigued us, but the big draw was this American music, played by English band. We were all very taken with the Beatles, their presence, dynamism and charisma. It was like an addiction: once we'd seen them a couple of times we couldn't get enough of them. John and Paul interacted with the audience and were responsible for creating the sense of the show. The other three were very much more background, the quietest being Harrison." [...] Memories have stayed distinct and precise for Top Ten habitués. [...] Icke Braun, 24, liked it when John was late returning from a break because Paul would say over the microphone 'Quasimodo, get on the stage!' and John would go into one of his cripple imitations, which made everyone laugh. Icke also adds: "My main friendship was with Paul, who seemed happy to talk and spoke a few words of German. He came to my house, though the language barrier did prevent meaningful conversation. Quite often I'd stay in the Top Ten until four in the morning and then go out to eat with the Beatles afterwards. I felt that the closest grouping was John and Stuart; George belonged to that but wasn't as close, and Paul was orbiting around them. Pete never came along -- whenever they went anywhere outside the club, Pete wasn't there." And Kathia Berger, 22, was deeply in love with Paul. "He looked like an angel with big eyes. He found it hard to say my name so he would play a request for 'the girl with red hair' and sing Till There Was You. [...] I could speak English which not many could do; I told him the Beatles would be famous and he laughed. I liked the others very much as well. [...] I thought John was intelligent and gifted, not so very happy but funny. He used to call Liverpool 'Liddypool' and had this rhyme he would sing into the microphone, 'Isadora Duncan works for Telefunken.'

🤍 for the adorable blue soon-to-be boyfriends
SEND ME 🤍 + A SHIP AND I’LL TELL YOU… [ VOL. 3 ]
- Who cooks meals for the other?
I'd wager they swap? Both can get pretty buys though I'd imagine. So whoever is the least buys taking the time to cook makes sense.
- Who spams the other with memes?
I think what happens is that Serzad spans ketshi with memes, and Ketshi shows Sayble meme she thinks Sayble would like form that bunch.
- Who likes to tidy around the house?
Both are rather tidy I'd imagine, so its like cooking, they either switch or do it together?
- Who likes to play pranks on the other?
I think it's probably Ketshi, but its never anything malicious or hurtful. Small things. More than likely though its Ketshi's lusus.
- Who asked the other to move in with them?
Unsure, I imagine both of them probably dance around the idea for a bit if they decide to at all. If they do decide to move in together it probs takes a while for either of them to ask.
- Who is in charge of the music during a car ride?
Whoever is driving!
- Who is more likely to tickle the other mercilessly?
I am also unsure, Ketshi maybe???
- Who needs to hold the other during scary movies?
Hold Ketshi gently like hamburger esp if you're watching them in the dead of day!
- Who has to help the other when it comes to technology?
Ketshi is the more tech savvy of the two I think, so Ketshi I wager.
- Who likes to get a bit frisky in public / an inappropriate setting?
I think IF either of them would, it'd be Ketshi but I also think Ketshi probably would not, both seem to like privacy and getting frisky would probs be saved for when its appropriate to get frisky.
- Who wakes up first, and do they wake up the other or let them rest?
I see them both as early risers, so I think they maybe get up around the same time. The person who wakes up first probs wakes up the other if they haven't been up all day.
- Who is always taking pictures of the other when they aren’t looking?
Neither? Unless Sayble thinks Ketshi is pretty photogenic. Ketshi usually asks.
- Who always forgets their wallet and never ends up paying for anything?
Neither? I think they both make sure everything is on them.
- Who can’t sleep because the other snores or moves too much at night?
Maybe Sayble? Maybe Ketshih? I don't think Ket snores much I don't know about Saybae.
- Who is better at video games, and do they let the other win or show no mercy?
Ketshi, probably because he does have a friend who makes them nd probably has him test things.
- Who always gets up in the middle of the night to use the restroom and accidentally wakes up the other?
Ketshi.

Association of Tennis Professionals
For other uses, see ATP (disambiguation).
The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) is the governing body of the men’s professional tennis circuits – the ATP Tour, the ATP Challenger Tour and the ATP Champions Tour.
It was formed in September 1972 by Donald Dell, Jack Kramer, and Cliff Drysdale to protect the interests of professional tennis players, and Drysdale became the first President. Since 1990, the association has organized the ATP Tour, the worldwide tennis tour for men and linked the title of the tour with the organization’s name. It is the governing body of men’s professional tennis. In 1990 the organization was called the ATP Tour, which was renamed in 2001 as just ATP and the tour being called ATP Tour. In 2009 the name of the tour was changed again and was known as the ATP World Tour, but changed again to the ATP Tour by 2019.[1] It is an evolution of the tour competitions previously known as Grand Prix tennis tournaments and World Championship Tennis (WCT).
The ATP’s global headquarters are in London. ATP Americas is based in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida; ATP Europe is headquartered in Monaco; and ATP International, which covers Africa, Asia and Australasia, is based in Sydney, Australia.
Early history
See also: Grand Prix tennis circuit and World Championship Tennis
Started in 1972 by Jack Kramer, Donald Dell, and Cliff Drysdale, it was first managed by Jack Kramer, as Executive Director, and Cliff Drysdale, as President. Jim McManus was a founding member.[2] Kramer created the professional players’ rankings system, which started the following year and is still in use. From 1974 to 1989, the men’s circuit was administered by a sub-committee called the Men’s International Professional Tennis Council (MIPTC). It was made up of representatives of the International Tennis Federation (ITF), the ATP, and tournament directors from around the world. The ATP successfully requested that the MIPTC introduce a drug testing rule, making tennis the first professional sport to institute a drug-testing program.
1973 Wimbledon boycott
In May 1973 Nikola Pilić, Yugoslavia’s number one tennis player, was suspended by his national lawn tennis association, who claimed he had refused to play in a Davis Cup tie for his country earlier that month.[3] The initial suspension of nine months, supported by the International Lawn Tennis Federation (ILTF), was later reduced by the ILTF to one month which meant that Pilic would not be allowed to play at Wimbledon.[4]
In response the ATP threatened a boycott, stating that if Pilić was not allowed to compete none should. After last-ditch attempts at a compromise failed the ATP voted in favor of a boycott and as a result 81 of the top players, including reigning champion Stan Smith and 13 of the 16 men’s seeds, did not compete at the 1973 Wimbledon Championships.[5][6] Three ATP players, Ilie Năstase, Roger Taylor and Ray Keldie defied the boycott and were fined by the ATP’s disciplinary committee.[4]
1988 breakaway
But the tour was still run by the tournament directors and the ITF. The limited player representation and influence within the Men’s International Professional Tennis Council (MIPTC) as well as dissatisfaction with the way the sport was managed and marketed culminated in a player mutiny in 1988 led by active tennis pros including then world Number 1 ranked Mats Wilander which changed the entire structure of the tour.[7]
ATP Tour
Main article: ATP Tour
CEO Hamilton Jordan is credited with the “Parking Lot Press Conference” on 26 August 1988 during which the ATP announced their withdrawal from the MIPTC (then called the MTC) and the creation of their own tour from 1990 onwards.[2][8][9][10] This re-organisation also ended a lawsuit with Volvo and Donald Dell.[11] On 19 January 1989 the ATP published the calendar for the inaugural 1990 season.[12]
By 1991, the men had their first television package to broadcast 19 tournaments.[2] Coming online with their first website in 1995, this was followed by a multi-year agreement with Mercedes-Benz. Lawsuits in 2008, around virtually the same issues, resulted in a restructured tour.[13]
2009 changes
In 2009, ATP introduced a new tour structure called ATP World Tour consisting of ATP World Tour Masters 1000, ATP World Tour 500, and ATP World Tour 250 tier tournaments.[14][15] Broadly speaking, the Tennis Masters Series tournaments became the new Masters 1000 level and ATP International Series Gold and ATP International Series events became ATP 500 level and 250 level events respectively.
The Masters 1000 tournaments are Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid, Rome, Toronto/Montreal, Cincinnati, Shanghai and Paris. The end-of-year event, the ATP Finals, moved from Shanghai to London. Hamburg has been displaced by the new clay court event at Madrid, which is a new combined men’s and women’s tournament. In 2011, Rome and Cincinnati also became combined tournaments. Severe sanctions are placed on top players skipping the Masters 1000 series events, unless medical proof is presented.
Plans to eliminate Monte Carlo and Hamburg as Masters Series events led to controversy and protests from players as well as organisers. Hamburg and Monte Carlo filed lawsuits against the ATP,[16] and as a concession it was decided that Monte Carlo would remain a Masters 1000 level event, with more prize money and 1000 ranking points, but it would no longer be a compulsory tournament for top-ranked players. Monte Carlo later dropped its suit. Hamburg was “reserved” to become a 500 level event in the summer.[17] Hamburg did not accept this concession, but later lost its suit.[18]
The 500 level tournaments are Rotterdam, Dubai, Rio, Acapulco, Barcelona, Aegon Championships (Queens Club, London), Halle (Gerry Weber Open), Hamburg, Washington, Beijing, Tokyo, Basel and Vienna.
The ATP & ITF have declared that Davis Cup World Group and World Group Playoffs award a total of up to 500 points. Players accumulate points over the four rounds and the playoffs and these are counted as one of a player’s four best results from the 500 level events. An additional 125 points are given to a player who wins all 8 live rubbers and wins the Davis Cup.[19]
ATP Tour tournaments
The ATP Tour comprises ATP Masters 1000, ATP 500, and ATP 250. The ATP also oversees the ATP Challenger Tour, a level below the ATP Tour, and the ATP Champions Tour for seniors. Grand Slam tournaments, a small portion of the Olympic tennis tournament, the Davis Cup, the Hopman Cup and the introductory level Futures tournaments do not fall under the auspices of the ATP, but are overseen by the ITF instead and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the Olympics. In these events, however, ATP ranking points are awarded, with the exception of the Olympics and Hopman Cup. The four-week ITF Satellite tournaments were discontinued in 2007.
Players and doubles teams with the most ranking points (collected during the calendar year) play in the season-ending ATP Finals, which, from 2000 to 2008, was run jointly with the International Tennis Federation (ITF). The details of the professional tennis tour are:

ATP Rankings
Main article: ATP Rankings
ATP publishes weekly rankings of professional players: ATP Rankings (commonly known as the ‘world rankings’), a 52-week rolling ranking, and the ATP Race to London, a year to date ranking.[20] All ATP players also have a Universal Tennis Rating, based on head-to-head results.
The ATP Rankings is used for determining qualification for entry and seeding in all tournaments for both singles and doubles. Within the ATP Rankings period consisting of the past year, points are accumulated, with the exception of those for the ATP Finals, whose points are dropped following the last ATP event of the year. The player with the most points by the season’s end is the world No. 1 of the year.
The ATP Rankings Race To London is a calendar-year indicator of what the Emirates ATP Rankings will be on the Monday after the end of the regular season. Players finishing in the top eight of the Emirates ATP Rankings following the Paris Masters will qualify for the ATP Finals.
At the start of the 2009 season, all accumulated ranking points were doubled to bring them in line with the new tournament ranking system.

Mobile Auto Repair is Not That Simple In a world of technology and convenience, it’s logical that a mechanic would come right to your home to service or repair your vehicle. However, house-call repairs are easier said than done. I posed a broad question in a few auto repair LinkedIn groups, such as the one below, and received a lot of valuable input largely the challenges involved in mobile auto repair from current auto repair professionals in all different job roles. COST Mobile Auto Services Come to You Mobile Auto Repair Service near Omaha NE: Convenience is driving demand for mobile auto services, which allow you to get your car detailed, oil changed or even preventive or emergency maintenance performed without leaving your home or office. Mobile auto detailing prices can run from $50 to more than $200, depending on the size of the vehicle. Mobile oil change services tend to cost from $35 to $50. The price for mobile mechanic services varies greatly, depending on level of service, parts used and amount of labor. There are more advantages to mobile services than convenience, our team found, including not having to wait in line for personal attention and, in many cases, working with the company owner. Our team also learned that some mobile auto businesses are flexible enough to come out with as little as 24 hours’ notice, while others may require that an appointment be made a week or more ahead. Our research team found that, in many cases, the cost of mobile auto services is no more than if you visited a brick-and-mortar shop. In interviewing highly rated mobile service providers, our team found that while some require a convenience fee, others charge less because they work out of their vehicles and avoid the costs of operating an office or shop.

10 Anthems From System, Hamburg's Notorious Early- '90s Techno Temple-- Telekom Electronic Pounds
When the initial Device club opened in Hamburg in 1989, it was actually embraced as a choice to various other places that worked on tighter time limits and also frequented much less main sites. Unlike Face, the pioneering nightclub that introduced property popular music to Germany-- and also probably multinational dancing floorings--, the 1st Unit at Talstrasse corrected at the center of some of among Europe's most significant amusement places, notorious red illumination area around Reeperbahn, and also as a result of this its own parties can last much longer.
At initially, the popular music at Unit was no different to what was actually participated in somewhere else around town-- a common post-acid residence boom mix. Soon however, the resident DJs like Gary D, Tobias Lampe and also Holly, and guide nationwide and also international guest DJs, switched towards techno and later hypnotic trance, as well as Unit became a leading lighting in developing and pressing these noises more along with various other nationwide pillars in Berlin and also Frankfurt.
The 1st System room needed to approach 1994 as a result of improved criminal activity in the area, yet it resumed the very same year as Unit II in a brief area likewise near to Reeperbahn, prior to System III resolved in an outdated manufacturing facility area in one more area. As the club increased much bigger in size and aspiration, the groups performed certainly not observe match, and Unit shut for really good in 1999. Our experts inquired DJ Tobias Lampe for a checklist of reports that made the very first System manifestation and also his and Henry's residency, phoned Pure Power, such an enduring mind.
A Homeboy, A Hippie & & A Funki Dredd, "Complete Complication (Heavenly Mix)" (Tam Tam Records 1990)
"This is one of the early anthems at the nightclub, which I think was actually additionally presently greatly played due to the initial Unit DJs Pari D and Dual UMF. The very early years were really quite open minded. They participated in a blend of property, hip hop, techno, even downtempo beats and a style contacted hip home. And it represents basically exactly how it was actually functioning in the UK also, this period when no person at the rave possessed tensions regarding having 808 State, Pop, Frankie Bones, Orbital and Guru Josh all on the very same stage."
Foremost Artists, "Extended Attraction Variation (Foresight Model)" (Nu Groove 1990)
"I guess I to begin with heard this magic piece when Boris Dlugosch played it at the Front club. Tough to clarify why, but it surely always made this enchanting, extreme ambience, both at Front and at Pure Electricity on Fridays, where Holly as well as me played this keep track of nearly each week. Few various other tracks may record the feeling of the time therefore strongly-- at that time it was led through residence and also techno songs coming from London, Nyc Metropolitan Area, Chicago and also Detroit. Front nightclub was hugely important, along with the Friday purchasing journey to the Container Records establishment, which imported all the songs directly. As Boris Dlugosch played much less and also much less techno at Face, our company tried to play and work with all factors of it at Pure Power, and also specifically techno from Detroit."
Psychological Trouble, "Joey's Riot" (Ambience Records 1990)
"Especially in The Big Apple Area, designates like Nu Gouge as well as others were actually launching music that appeared like each home as well as techno. Our experts commemorated specifically these hybrid appears and also in knowledge this might possess been what Hamburg was constantly approximately. Regularly open-minded as well as somehow in between. Our team were actually obviously trying all kinds of noises at that time. We participated in pretty tough thumping techno and also very early hypnotic trance, however at the primary of what we participated in was always what our company phoned tech-house. This prime goose bump example of the tech-house noise our company loved was actually produced by Joey Beltram, that for our team was actually one of the leading Nyc producers in this field."
Format, "Solid Treatment" (ESP Records 1991)
"This Orlando Voorn one was a what we called a Voll-Brett. Brett indicates plank, it's a term utilized for especially reliable flooring fillers-- we embraced this language from the Frankfurt setting. It's a certain shot that consistently contents skins in the nightclub. It was actually one of the noticeable anthems, at the very least for our nights."
The Hypnotherapist, "Pioneers Of The Warped Canal" (Increasing Higher 1991)
"We managed bus journeys from Hamburg to the first Mayday event and Love Parades. I still remember our experts invested 3 times preparing up the 1st Breather The Limitations Go Crazy at Kasematten/Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, and after our company were actually performed partying, we removed whatever and then moved towards Berlin for Mayday in a bus packed with Hamburg ravers.
Henry and also I were actually therefore run through that our experts must cancel our Pure Power gig there, as well as instead our company partied on as most effectively as our experts still could. And then, eventually, The Hypnotist jumped on phase, and they threw hundreds of green radiance sticks into the crowd. The lightings and also fog carried out the remainder.
The surroundings at Halle Weissensee was actually magical, and then the songs began. It simply blew me away how a lot of music effects they might combine. Trance was actually certainly not a musical condition for our company then, yet if you use it to a mood The Therapist probably was the act that toenailed it down best, particularly at that job. Obviously, our team could not help it, and really felt need to celebrate these keep tracks of at System, preferably from 4 a.m. onwards."
Ramirez, "Los Angeles Musika Tremenda (La Tormenta Mix)" (DFC 1991)
"Ramirez created a minimum of pair of masterpieces of very early tech-trance (which is what we eventually called this type), as well as this is one of them. I carry out not understand just how to define it exactly, yet the monitor had this subliminal dirty contact, as well as when I hear it, I am going to permanently consider sweat-drenched ravers, trembling blinking light, solid smog and the experience of strolling out into vast daytime after partying. This keep track of was always the one to activate the final reserves."
Golden Girls, "Dynamic (Frank De Wulf Remix)" (R&S Records 1992)
"In this listing, I am actually also making an effort to show how a considerable amount of different scenes and circles from various components of the planet produced this magical universe of sound our team enjoyed back then. This is actually a perfect example of the effect of the Belgian audio. I still think that Belgian as well as Dutch songs's influence has regularly been actually under rated. This was a significant and also surefire sausage at Unit."
Vainqueur, "Lyot (Maurizio Mix)" (Maurizio 1992)
"This keep track of is actually characteristic of the impacts of Berlin and also Detroit to our noise. The Berlin/Detroit axis remained in early progress during that time, and also our company took trips to Berlin to discover this noise at Hard Wax as well as Ecstasy. We partied to it at Tresor, Teknozid as well as Earth, however also at Hamburg's Front nightclub, before the first Unit opened up. For us, Basic Stations's discography offered the first major releases coming from Berlin, even in relations to techno. I think we additionally believed Maurizio was actually a person from Detroit. The minimalistic, dubbed out as well as darker parts of techno, tinted with some references to EBM, played a significant role at Device. Actually my very first night at System got on a Wednesday as well as it was actually called Tekkno Nightclub, with 2 k, of training program. It was actually even more devoted to EBM, Dark Surge as well as Acid, as well as then it opened to the impacts from over the garden pond, UK, Berlin as well as Frankfurt."
Vapourspace, "Gravitational Arch Of 10" (Plus 8 Records 1993)
"I may not remember where I initially heard this, however I keep in mind just how surprised I was. Ever since, I intended to share this feeling, as well as it was actually played at least twice an evening. I likewise remember we experimented with switching out the strike out and also blasting the haze machine prior to the kick drum was available in, and it regularly brought about incredible screams from the dance flooring. Not considerably eventually, Henry and also I marketed the Plus 8 night with Vapourspace stay together with DJ collections by Richie Hawtin as well as John Acquaviva. Our experts were pretty impressed through his analogue reside specified pageants."
Marmion, "Schöneberg" (Superstition 1993)
"Holly and I were actually doing the Pure Electricity night every Friday at System. Our experts threw probably all the pertinent names back then, from Derrick Might to Sven Väth. It was actually such a small act in a handful of German urban areas in those days that our team all felt a little like loved ones. Early buddies from our go crazy trips to Berlin, Frankfurt as well as Munich were actually, for instance, Mijk vehicle Dijk and also Marcos Lopez, that provided me this Berlin development as a demo a few times after a job at Unit. This EP and also track actually turned into one of the breakthroughs of Fear Recordings, the label I just had established three launches back. Specifically this fourth release gained the label as well as both manufacturers a significant international following. And the keep track of is what I phone a perfect mix of residence as well as techno components; it's a real techno house standard."

Wir sind die Könige - VIII.
5 years earlier.
Aph stood up from her airplane seat, after a few people had already gotten off the plane. She put on the beanie on her short blonde hair, and after collecting her carry-on she got out and dove herself in the German fall weather.
She instinctively smiled, happy to have come home. Slowly walking at the arrival part of Tegel airport, she called herself a cab and decided to be treated like the goddess she was. Aph deserved it, after what was going on.
It didn't take long to arrive at the familiar building she had learned to love so much. It was a dismissed electricity central, that had been turned into a design lover's dream. She got out the cab, looking around and loving to be in Berlin again after all these months in New York. She had gotten used to love the USA, her small studio apartment in Queens, the dream she was starting to build to help the men and the women she loved so dearly. But yet, no place in her heart was quite like Berlin.
"Fräulein Aphrodite!" The doorman greeted her, and then helped her to carry her suitcase. "Es ist so gut um dir noch mal zu sehen. Herzlich wilkommen." Aph left a kiss on the doorman's cheek.
"Danke, Udo." she replied. "I am afraid my German needs to be polished a bit." The doorman laughed, and opened the door for her.
"Shall I call..."
"No," Aph added very quickly. "I want to go upstairs on my own. It's a surprise, nobody knows I'm here." Udo smiled back under his grey moustache.
"Gut. Dann, you can go upstairs and nobody will hear a thing." At the same moment, from the rehearsal room came a thundering sound, made of heavy guitars and a very powerful drums rhythm. Aph smiled from ear to ear. Rammstein was playing, and there was no better sound in the world.
The doorman showed her to the elevator, and they both entered. Aph looked at herself. She adjusted a tuft of hair on her forehead, and smoothed down her beige coat. She surely looked more tired since the last time she had seen him. Yet, she had known him for so many years - or better, centuries, - that she was sure he would appreciated the sight of her face in any condition.
The elevator doors opened, and with her heart bumping like crazy in her chest, she stepped out. Following the music, she walked towards the door where she could hear it louder, and taking a deep breath, she opened it by pushing on the handle. Everything seemed to move in slow motion. The door opened, and one by one she caught sight of all of them.
Like magic, almost as if they knew that Aph was coming, they had stopped playing. Doom, sitting behind the drums, let down the drumsticks to pick up a bottle of water. Paul, sitting cross-legged on his huge amplifier, who still bobbed his head to the rhythm in his mind. Then there was Oliver, sweet Oliver, that was cleaning his reading glasses with a hem of his shirt, as his bass guitar was still hanging from his tall figure. Flake, drinking coffee from a cup that had drawn Batman on it. Till, with the microphone between his teeth, too focused on his lyrics, that kept on scribbling down on a Moleskine.
Her eyes, almost moved by the emotion of seeing them all again, enjoyed the sensation of peace and deep affection that they all woke up in her heart. Until…
"Is it...is it a dream? Am I awake?"
His voice. Aph’s lips curved into the most beautiful smile ever. She couldn’t even turn around completely that she already had Richard’s hands take her face and passionately pull it in for a kiss. First, he left one on her forehead. ‘He knows I love it.’ Then, he kissed her lips, not before smiling at her. Richard. Ares. It didn’t really matter to her. The scruff on his cheeks and his jaws gently tickled her. His dark hair was all spiked up, as usual. He was wearing a simple grey sweatshirt, and despite looking tired – Aph could tell that he had been working a lot, - he was terribly handsome. As ever. And it was always incredible to get back to him.
“Aph!” Paul stood up, and went to hug her. Richard snorted at the fact that he had momentarily pulled her away from him. Yet, he smiled at the scene with arms crossed.
“Hey.” She replied, hugging him tight. “Hello everybody. Missed me?” Aph waved at the other members of the band – and of her family, - and they all looked genuinely happy to see her.
“Hi beautiful.” Till spoke. He was massive, and huge. Elegant. Aph went up to him, and hugged him as well. Till held her close for a moment, before she went on saying hi to all the others.
“Have you…?” Flake whispered to her ear.
“Shush.” Aph said to him, so low that no one could hear her. Flake bit his lower lip, and smiled. It was a huge, naughty smile, of someone that knew something that should be kept secret. “Be a good boy.” She added, to which Flake laughed.
“You look radiant, by the way.” Flake said, leaving another kiss on her temple.
“Enough with the secrets.” Richard said. “Have a seat, babe. How was your flight?” Aph let down herself on the comfortable leather couch next to Oliver. The tall man offered her a bottle of beer, taking it out of the small fridge on the side of the sofa. Aph pulled up her hand, in a gesture that meant that she didn’t want one.
“Thanks Oli, but not now.” Aph continued. “The flight was not bad. I’m just terribly hungry.” Richard caressed the top of her head, then leant in to leave another gentle kiss on her. He couldn’t help it, he couldn’t help but being drawn to her. Her jeans ripped in some points on her thighs, the striped white a blue shirt that hid the morbid curves of her breasts, the small freckles on her nose, that were usually more visible during the summer…when Aphrodite was in the room, there was no hope for anybody. She was the center of his everything. So much, that he found himself almost staring at her. “Richard?”
“…Ja?”
“Alles gut?”
“Ja.” He added. “Alles gut.” Flake, from the end of the room, looked at the scene. He wasn’t a man – or God, - that used to have so negative thoughts, despite being the God of the Underworld. In that moment, Flake was experiencing one of the most beautiful feelings: hope. And he got that just by looking at Aph and Richard, watching as they interacted, as their hands touched each other, as they created their magic.
“You know something. Don’t you?” Doom said to Flake. Flake took off his glasses, and polished them with the hem of his button up plaid shirt.
“The time will come.”
“I hate when you say these spooky-God-of-death-and-life things…” Doom replied, with a small laugh.
“Let’s go eat something.” Paul looked for consense all around the rehearsal room.
“Something greasy. And with potatoes.” Aph, excited like a little kid, pointed at Paul. He winked at her, and started collecting his things, putting away his black ESP guitar.
“We know just the spot.” Oliver added. He high fived with Aph, and Richard let a laugh out.
After a while, they were sitting at the tables of one of the most famous hamburger den in Berlin. Till knew the owner, and he had made sure that the place had been reserved for them only, so that they could have some peace. Aph was sitting at the wooden table, between Richard and Paul. She cleaned the edge of her mouth with the back of her hand, as a drop of homemade mayonaise was going down on her chin.
“Whatever this thing is, I want another one.” She added, as she kept on eating. Richard put the tip of his index finger in the small cup of barbecue sauce in front of them, and gently pushed it on Aph’s nose. Paul laughed as he finished his first hamburger, before standing up to order another one.
“Mein kleines, hungriges Mädchen.” He replied to her, as the others watched the scene, amused.
“Let her be, airplane food is awful.” Till justified her. “It makes you even hungrier.” Aph nodded, and after cleaning her nose she dipped her finger in the sauce as well; she slid it on Richard’s face, from between the nose and downwards.
“Thanks, Till.” She said, with a chuckle. Richard stood still for a minute, with a stupid, cute smile on his face. He then grabbed a paper towel, and cleaned his face.
Aph took a moment to glance at the men sitting with them. They had been together since the dawn of time, literally. Getting adjusted to life in the mortal world hadn’t been easy, that was for sure. Thanks to Paul’s help – who knew humans better than most Gods, - they had made it. All of them had created a nice, happy life on that corner of the Universe. They had families, they had kids. Some of them, had kids and didn’t even know it – just like in the old mythology books. It was so good being one of ‘them’. She istinctively brushed her hand on her belly, and looked straight into Flake’s eyes. Hades touched her hand under the table, for a brief moment. Almost as if he wanted to tell her ‘you can do it’. Aph then waited for Paul to come back to the table, and then cleared her throat.
“Ah, plane cough. I hate it.” Richard said, as he patted her on her back.
“No, Reesh. I just wanteed to gather attention from everybody.” Aph added, putting down her hamburger. The guys looked at her, expecting. Cars kept on passing by, the U-Bahn was just stopping by the station above their heads. Doom looked at Flake, once again. Oliver looked at Paul in an expression that meant ‘So what?’. Richard, of course, was the most focused.
“I discovered it about…”
“…two months ago.” Flake pointed out. He couldn’t hold it in anymore. Richard immediately looked at Flake, puzzled.
“Thanks, Flake.” Aph rolled her eyes.
“At least tell me if it’s something good or-“
“Good. The best, actually.” Aph put a hand on Richard’s mouth, so he would finally shut up. Then she took a deep breath. “You’re…you’re becoming a father, Richard.” She took his hand, and placed it on her belly. Richard let his jaw fall open, incapable of letting out any sound. Everything seemed to be muffled up, like they were in a cloud.
“Das war so schwer.” Flake sighed, then widened his long arms and went to hug both Richard and Aph. “Congratulations you two!” Paul almost coughed out the hamburger mouthful because of the happiness he was feeling. Oliver just felt like applauding, and joined the others for the hug.
“That’s a huge step.” Till commented, not without a smile on his face. “But it will be one of the best steps you can take, that I can assure you.” Aph smiled back at Till, and thanked him silently. He was one that she always liked to count on. And she knew how he was always there. He had always been, actually.
“It will be so nice to have another little one around.” Doom said, as he got closer to Aph and left a kiss on her temple. “Richard?”
“Love?”
The combination of Aph and Doom’s voice brought him back to reality. Being as delicate as he could be, he squeezed Aph’s hand, and brushed the tip of his fingers on her belly.
“It’s real, Richard.” Aph whispered to his ear. “It’s absolutely real.” She caressed his face, almost as if she wanted to reassure him. Richard felt his eyes fill with tears. Tears of the most incontrollable happiness. He leant his face in the space between her shoulder and her neck, and closed his eyes.
“I love you, Aph. This is going to be the biggest challenge of my immortal life.”
“I know.” She added, as she left a kiss on his forehead. “Have a drink on me, everybody.” Aph grabbed her glass of lemon water, and held it up. The others held up their hands, their fingers wrapped around their beers.
“To life.” Flake proposed.
“To life.” All of them repeated.
As they all toasted, Richard felt a shiver cross his back. He looked around, and it seemed to him that there was somebody staring at him. It wasn’t a pleasant sensation. Yet, he shook it off very quickly. He wrapped both of his arms around Aph’s chest, and said to her ear, once again, that he loved her. He said it so many times, almost as if he wanted to kick away the unpleasant moment he had just lived.
To be continued.

Why we should care about the language we use in science
This post first appeared in the ‘On Society’ blog at BioMed Central and is reposted here with permission.
***
Brigitte Nerlich and Carmen McLeod at the Synthetic Biology Research Centre at the University of Nottingham have given ‘Responsible Research and Innovation’ a new twist, by focusing on responsible language use. As everybody knows by now, words matter in politics as well as in science. Here is a brief account of how this new focus came about and how it led up to a new thematic series now fully published in Life Sciences, Society and Policy.
Responsible language use – a brief personal history
From around 2005 onwards synthetic biology was in the air in the natural and social sciences. In 2008 two of Brigitte’s colleagues, Andrew Balmer, now Manchester, and Paul Martin, now Sheffield, wrote a first report on the social and ethical challenges posed by synthetic biology. At the same time, Brigitte became intrigued by the language used to talk about this emerging field. This led to a chapter by Andy Balmer and Camille Herreman which she included in a book co-edited with Richard Elliott and Brendon Larson on Communicating Biological Sciences: Ethical and metaphorical dimensions, published in 2009.
Around the same time, and together with colleagues in the life and computer sciences (esp. Natalio Krasnogor, now Newcastle), we set up SynBioNT a synthetic biology network that brought scholars from many disciplines together. In 2010 Craig Venter announced one of the major breakthroughs in synthetic biology: the so-called creation of artificial life. A year after that, in 2011, SynBioNT organised a public dialogue event in Nottingham. That was also the year during which the first proposals for a new governance framework for science, namely Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) began to appear.
It was also in 2011 that Iina Hellsten and Brigitte published an article on the metaphors that frame synthetic biology, while other metaphorical friends, like Martin Döring for example, focused more on systems biology.
In 2014 the University of Nottingham became one of a number of Synthetic Biology Research Centres and Brigitte became its social science lead. All centres were supposed to implement RRI, a rather difficult task. In order to put our stamp on things, Carmen McLeod and Brigitte homed in on the issue of responsible language use, a topic that was beginning to gain some traction in metaphor and environment studiescircles, but was entirely neglected by mainstream RRI. Some of this work is reviewed in Martin Döring’s article for the thematic series.
In 2016, we wrote a blog post reviewing emerging literature on synthetic biology, metaphors and responsible language use. After that, and inspired by Steven Burgess, then working at the University of Cambridge, we convened a symposium to which we invited some of the most active people in that field, as well as a number of interested social and life scientists.
Synthetic biology: How the use of metaphors impacts on science, policy and responsible research
After the symposium (summarised here), we edited an open access thematic series. The articles in this series deal with synthetic biology, metaphors and responsible language use from a wide variety of perspectives (see list below with links to article and authors).
Carmen and Brigitte set the scene by writing an overview of synthetic biology and metaphor research together with some indications of what this meant for responsible language use and RRI.
An article by Manuel Porcar and Juli Peretó reviewed the historical context in which synthetic biology and its metaphors emerged, while Victor de Lorenzo looked back at some prominent metaphors, such as ‘tinkering’ and ‘engineering’ in order to propose a radical vision of synthetic biology through the lens of the engineering metaphor.
While Porcar and Peretó had analysed how some metaphors faired in the early press coverage of the emerging field of synthetic biology, Martin Döring examined recent press coverage in Germany and submitted it to a novel linguistic analysis that reveals implicit moral assumptions inherent in prominent metaphors (see also his blog post). Joachim Boldt also homed in on ethics, in particular the ethical implications of the machine metaphor that dominates synthetic biology. Leah Ceccarelli in turn asked whether the metaphor of biotechnology as a change agent may actually hinder responsible innovation. She tells us more about her research in this blog post.
A number of contributions reported on social/life science interactions in the lab and the metaphors and responsibilities that emerged there. Erika Szymanski reported on her lab ethnography and explored, through the lens of metaphor analysis, what responsible research means when humans try to be responsible toward and even with creatures across species boundaries. Hub Zwart zoomed in on the cell and efforts to create an artificial one in the lab, an endeavour that is partly shaped by imagining and imaging the cell as a ‘mandala’. Matthew Kearnes, Declan Kuch and Angus Johnston drew on ongoing ethnographic engagement with researchers working in synthetic biology and bionanotechnology in order to collaboratively explore metaphors and the work they perform.
Words count
In his recent book, The Third Lens, Andrew Reynolds examines the way that metaphors shaped the emergence and change of cell theory and points out: “Metaphor is a real element of scientific activity, and it is time that it be recognised as such and treated with the seriousness it deserves.” To this we would add: Metaphor is a real element of responsible research and innovation, and it is time that it be recognised as such and treated it with the seriousness it deserves. We tried to do this for synthetic biology in our symposium and in our thematic series.
We would like to thank all contributors for their fascinating and thought-provoking contributions to this series and to a new sub-field of Responsible Research and Innovation!

Race, Mental Health and State Violence: A Two-Day Symposium. (Panel 1 - Critical Intersections)
April 9 2018
https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/race-mental-health-and-state-violence-a-two-day-symposium-tickets-43160409948?aff=erellivmlt
Thoughts: I was only able to attend Day 1, Panel 1: Critical Intersections. All of these talks were important and provided some really great statistics & sources, but the one I found most interesting was the first by Fatima. I found her insights about personal experience as a (female) researcher fascinating, and I enjoyed hearing select interviewee’s stories in detail. I also appreciated distinction she raised between the perception of Black vs Muslim looking men and that intersection, as that was actually a conversation my Muslim Egyptian friend (hi Alshymaa!) and I were talking about at a war on terror exhibition a few days before this talk. While I still found the talks informative, I felt like they definitely focused a lot more on race than they did mental health. While I don’t know much about mental health in the criminal justice system, I did my final year research essay on mass incarceration in the US, so I am quite aware of how race factors in. So while the British statistics were different from the sources I studied (and it was helpful to see UK centric numbers), I personally wish that there was more about mental health in these talks.
intersections of muslimness, race, gender & mental health (fatima rajina)
form of biological racism - south asians perceived to be muslim even if they aren’t. stopped & searched based on how police perceive them.
black muslims?
grenfell, palmers green, london bridge, manchester, ??? bridge - all the attacks last year happened during research period
muslim men, a lot of people were getting paranoid in being interviewed in public about (counter)terrorism
female interviewer - men more comfortable in crying & opening up & showing emotion in front of rather than men
one young interviewee, 20 yo been harassed since 16: active on college campus in east london, group of muslims organised a petition against a legislation, teachers weren’t happy about it & saw them as a nuisance. thinks one of his teachers gave his name to counterterrorism (prevent officers)??, wakes up and saw two police outside his house in the morning, being interrogated there & then.
way they spoke to and addressed him —> lots of coercion
offered a role as a snitch (role in counter terrorism)
got random no caller ID phone calls at ridiculous hours, asking if they’ve thought of their proposition as a snitch
really struggled during this time, was wetting the bed
felt like an attack on his masculinity - cannot express himself, how he was treated by police
white irish in SE london, muslim convert:
was accused of being a terrorist within 2 years of converting
in 2006 he travelled to syria (way before the conflict kicked off in 2010), looked like your typical white backpacker. was interrogated at this point, visited by the police + put on control order (“secret evidence” used against you, essentially on a tag, like severe bail conditions)
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/libertycentral/2009/feb/03/civil-liberties-control-orders
https://nearlylegal.co.uk/2007/11/control-orders-and-secret-evidence/
felt his masculinity was constantly being questioned, wasn’t offered any compassion
was unemployed, forced to go to this police station an hour away
2 year legal battle to be freed [famous case, been covered nationwide]
whiteness has been stripped off of me because of my religion (when became visible muslims in public - gets questioned where they are from)
they tried to break him down - he had to seek therapy, be put on medication. they were aware of the context of him breaking curfew etc but still treated that as a penalty
black jamaican, muslim convert
when police stop him its not because he’s muslim (or has a beard), only when his name (arabic) comes up does the intersection kick in
black male supersedes whether they’re muslim or not
interviewed about 8 girls (non/muslim)
female muslims have experienced violence from CT officers through male in their lives - “the conversation" was had at like 11. sisters responsibility to look out for brothers, if they’re present may calm things down with officers?
south asians, generally associated with islam already: paki bashing (her parents gen) —> muslim bashing (her gen)
terrorists - white or brown. black people are “gangsters”, not terrorists. they never get told to go home ??
arrested safety: intersectional police violence, neoliberal securitisation and abolitionist visions (Vanessa-Eileen Thompson)
increasing securitisation (ie. policing) in parts of post colonial europe - urban policing, slow violence
recognisability of criminals?
“districts of danger” - police can check anyone without any individual suspicion, generally where (san p?? in hamburg, in 2001)
criminalisation of right to exist, to space and to move
forces you to decriminalise yourself in front of others
institutional racism makes it hard to counter racist policing on legal basis - swiss legal ?? black person ??
policing as a form of property, appropriating radicalised bodies
black people call police for help, but they are then being abused by the police instead - outside of the safety they’re supposed to enforce. repressive measures + criminalisation that can lead to death.
death of dominic ?? in germany, 2006
christy schwundeck - shot in job centre. struggling with depression, trying to get child out of foster care
race, gender, migration status, mental health —> threat, unworthy of safety + protection
pathological threat instead of a subject worth of safety and care
for them the police never means safety
mental inferiority is so much part of colonial projects (slavery) —> mental health is at centre
quality of life crimes - public nuisance
police + prisons have become substitute solutions to mental health crises
more likely to cause them to get in contact with these institutions + everyday triggers & makes it worse
starts with racist profiling
networks of communications + warnings - counter control maps, text messages, calling someone became the primary ???, stoplecontroleaufacies.fr (documenting cases to stop the normality of this phenomenon)
how does a society without policing look? caring instead of punishment. rooted in methods of care rather than institutional violence
reinstitutionalisation in an age of deinstitutionalisation (Zin Derfoufi)
S136 Mental Health Act - police detention power
to remove people who appear to be in “immediate need of care or control”
can use reasonable force if necessary, detain for 72 hours + possible extension
really about social control at the end of the day
reliable numbers by NHS digital vs detentions recorded by police (FOI requests) - 352 people are detained by a police force every year
lack of continuation of care —> many people end up back in
race and differential experiences - completely ignored in the debate about mental health
people from ethnic minorities are more likely (esp. black) to be detained
there isn’t much good data out there, because the forces have not been recording it properly
“mixed ethnicities” much higher to be detained under mental health act?? (even than just black - v surprising)
social control actors - general rise in use of powers
law and violence at the intersection of race and mental health in custody environments (Dinesh Napal)
public sentiment - demonising victims of police brutality + increased militarisation and state violence
law has failed to act as an apparatus to protect people from state violence
data is a medium for representing scale of issue, should never be held in higher regard than stories of individuals
in 2012, blacks 30x more likely than white to be stopped and searched (in england/wales)
dismantle idea of BAME/POC - dilutes the ways in which distinct racial groups face unique ways of oppression
black people targeted under MHA
chinese at the bottom (even below white)
laws on use of force: reasonability and responsibility, lack of clarity in enforcement
no convictions
statutory provisions are not enough
deaths in custody = state sanctioned deaths, extrajudicial killings
scope to rethink definition of ^ - no accountability for over 500 deaths of POC in police custody
should be treated as murder/homocide cases from outset
summary executions, state sanctioned murders? burden of proof moved on to individual officer + institution
channel 4 documentary released over weekend
panel
one sided reproduction of an argument, using police numbers, rather than critically investigating
security state is criminalising + capitalising on poor
parents generations likely to call police, because they come from bangladesh / ghana (where the perception is corruption), and there’s an element of trust here in britain. —> youth centres are the ones that get the respect - community orgs.
black/brown police are even worse bc they have to prove their loyalty to institutions / white colleagues — way more traumatic
role of trade unions
creating archives of resistance - what worked, what didn’t, why, how this can be applied transnationally
the police state is organising transnationally - they are traveling + communicating all the time (biometric systems for asylum seekers)
pro restraint should be eradicated

DAY 1: Monday 6th November 2017
Today was my first day of the TEFL course...and I won't lie I was super nervous but excited and eager to get going – that is after all why I am here. Myself and two of my flat mates had a leisurely walk over to the school, which we managed to find easily. Once there we were met by Kristin – who I had been dying to meet in person since this has been something I have been planning on doing for so long! The first part of our day consisted of paperwork and orientation, here we were also given our four-week timetable – and boy Kristin wasn't lying when she said we would have an extremely poor social life (if any!) We also introduced ourselves to one another (I am in a group with seven other people), Mercedes, Nick, Regina and Bateman who are all from the USA, Katherine and Angelina who (like me) are from the UK and Lindsey who is from the Netherlands.
First, we had a foreign language experience, this was with Stephany who we had been told earlier was going to teach us Greek. She walked into the classroom with a smile on her face making sure to gain eye contact with all of us. She then proceeded to the board to write the title of our lesson which was "Greek", once she had written this she pointed to the word and said it allowed and repeating it – she then beckoned us to repeat the word several times. She did the same process for the word hi – but she also waved at us so that we could understand what she was saying. Next, she went on to write the Greek for "my name is Stephany" she did the same as before (following the words on the board as she said them) while using body language to explain what she was saying (pointing to herself). We then went on to finding out the Greek translation for our names. She went on to teach us the Greek for:
You are?
Nice to meet you
Good morning
Good afternoon
Good night
Numbers from 1 to 10
Yes and no
Colours: (blue, brown, green, red, orange, yellow, white, black and pink)
Thank you and you're welcome
Empty
Sorry
During this lesson Stephany used Elicitation strategies such as; repetition, paralinguistic, visuals, providing words that sounded similar/began with the same first two letters and hangman. Throughout the lesson I took notes on the words she was teaching us and what they meant and during a task where Stephany put us into groups to do sheet work she told us all to close our books and she cleaned the board so there was no help – we all had to do it by memory. This took me sky high out of my comfort zone, as I am someone who basically learns from writing lines (or on the other end of the spectrum practical hands on work). However, because we were in groups I found that the ones that I remembered my classmates did not and vice versa. Our communicative activity was a game of Uno. Again, Stephany spoke no English but instead started the game, we had to say the number and colour of the card we were putting down in Greek.
Once the lesson had concluded Stephany then spoke to us in English for the first time in an hour, and we all made notes about her lessons. She spoke about how when teaching true beginners, you shouldn't overwhelm them and start off slow. That you should never translate or explain – keep repeating and have them guess. That you should choose either pronunciation, listening, speaking or spelling and not all four at once. And you should always choose a theme/topic and stick to it – make sure everything is in context. Finally, at the end we discussed what her objective and aims were; "by the end of the lesson students will be able to use pre-taught vocabulary of numbers and colours, in order to do the communicative activity of Uno. By the end of the lesson I had a true realization of what my future students will feel – and I can honestly say that at first, I wasn't feeling confident – but as the lesson went on my confidence grew.
After lunch we came back to have our communicative lesson with Kristin where we started learning about the different abbreviations that we would probably come across and the levels of student ability. A few examples of the abbreviations are ESOL, TESOL, TEFL, EFL, ESL, DIPTESOL, TBE, ESP...and so on. And the CEFR levels A1 to C2. I found this helpful as I was able to differentiate between the abbreviations and the difference between true and false beginners and the levels. We then went on to do our set communicative activities which entailed the entire group going around completing a sheet called "Find Someone Who" (which would be used with levels A and B students) by asking one another questions such as "are you a movie buff?" Or "have you recently learned a new skill?" I was able to get around the entire group and get answers to fill out my sheet. There is only one box empty and that is "Can you recite the US Declaration of Independence?" As there wasn't anyone in the group who could. Once our time was up on this activity we set about the next one which was "Interview a partner. Ask him or her the following questions. (Feel free to expand on the conversation to find out more information about your partner)” (which would be used with B and C level students). I was paired with Mercedes and we decided to take it in turns to ask each other the questions and for every yes answer we gave we were both intrigued to hear more. Once again Kristin signalled that our time was up and the entire group came together to discuss what skills were used and what we were supposed to get out of each activity. We used skills such as conversation, asking questions, giving informative answers, listening, note taking, interpersonal, first and third person, paraphrasing and reporting to name but a few. We also concluded that the aim for both activities was to get to know one another. Overall, we learnt that in order for it to be a communicative activity you need a group of people (not one!) to communicate and provide each other with information. After this we went through a PowerPoint presentation where I made notes on what a communicative activity is, what they had to be (learners to speak and listen to one another, lively, interactive, fun etc.) I also made a note that accuracy of language the students use is less important than the achievement of the activity which I found interesting and must remember! The PowerPoint then went on to cover points on fluency, accuracy, what matters, student grouping and types of activities. At the end of this lesson Kristin proceeded to put us in pairs to do our homework assignment of creating our own communicative activity and I am with Nick.
Finally, we had our “Sample lesson ‘Hamburger’” with Bianca. And quite frankly I had no idea what to expect. The first thing she did was introduce herself and ask us to watch two short video clips. We then went on to discuss what they were about. We were given our communicative activity of arguing for hamburgers and against them. Bianca separated us into groups and sent us away to come up with five points to make during the discussion. The really interesting part of this class for me wasn’t as such the lesson itself, but the part where we sat and discussed the lesson plan Bianca used. We made notes on the how we got to the pre-taught vocabulary by using elicitation strategies such as:
Paralinguistic or body language,
Visuals such as photos/pictures/videos,
Examples [in context] (always keep them related to your topic/theme),
Missing word [in context],
Antonyms which means opposites,
Synonyms,
Drawings,
Hangman.
Overall today was a real eye opener of what to expect while doing the course...I mean we were told all of our deadlines and Kristin also dropped the bomb that we would be teaching THIS Thursday....that's a mere few days away! It also provided insight into how the students will feel...whether they are at a beginner level or intermediate. I can honestly say that I expect this to be one of the most challenging months I will face, but I am really looking forward to getting stuck into the course.
But for now, I’ll see you tomorrow TEFL.

Philistines storm Bilbo, Donostia & munch on Euskal Txerria
Nope, not the The Hobbit. That’s just being silly. @Val_Littlewood and I agreed during the course of this latest trip to two of the most important cities of the Basque Country that we’re really just not cut out for the excessive formality, the often almost stifling stuffiness, the enforced quietude and the apparent forelock tugging reverence demanded — of the customer — of visits to the very top end (often Michelin) star(-red) restaurants.

Almost as bad as the — thanks to Val for coining this one — militant terroir-ists! Instead, we’re at our very happiest when we’re allowed (no, required) to drop our used paper napkins on the floor, where we can excitedly grab another pintxos from the fantastic array on the counter & cram it into our mouths, adding to the pile of tooth-picks stacked on our plates, shout — in our very poor Spanish — at the owners and fellow customers (in a sometimes vain attempt esp. on my part, I freely admit), to communicate effectively and generally have a bloody great time.
I know that this confession means I’m barred for life from the Gourmet Club. I’m unrepentant. If we’re not enjoying the whole experience — not just the food — then there’s no point going and paying their eye-wateringly high prices to spend hours that could have been better utilised elsewhere. Sorry. Put it down to our inability to grasp or identify those subtle tastes & textures, painstakingly teased out of the meticulously sourced, hyper-local, rare, historically priceless, artisanal ingredients that they’re providing for our delectation.
And yet still, despite this (completely co-incidentally timed) article wherein Sean Brock passionately defends the tasting menu — from which the above shot came — you’ll just have to call us Philistines, as it’s all just too difficult for us. Or so it would seem.
Anyway, if you haven’t yet totally recoiled in disgust from this confession of my abject failure but instead, are still sticking with me here, as a loyal reader, then “read on (not “lay on”, I know!) MacDuff” for this and subsequent pieces on where we DID go and what we enjoyed.
The Basquery was one such delight. We stumbled inside the dim entrance at the end of a long day of pounding the streets after a frenzy of exploration. Setup by an Aitor Elizegi, local chef and businessman, it’s a combined brewery — run by the team of Mikel Muñoz and Pablo Mellado (known as the “Drunken Bros” — I’m not sure if that is intended as a compliment or just as a comment on their usual state) — a bakery (both types of fermented goods being produced in-house) and…
…a deli/grocery area, all situated slap-bang, right in the centre of Bilbao and next door to his restaurant, Bascook, which we had no idea even existed until after we’d left, but will now be visiting the next time we’re in town.
On this, the first of two times we came here, we started with their taster flight of beers. The “Hitman” IPA is fantastic, using the Citra hop; if you get a chance, grab a larger glass or two of that. The “Bagazo” stout is a rich, chocolate deep taste and, especially in winter, something to warm the cockles of your heart. The “Mile O”, subtle, light, quite sweet whilst the “Eskombro” reminds me of the great brown ales that you used to get in England 50 years ago.

It’s all housed over two floors (taking up the ground and basement areas) of a fabulous old corner space, with great swathes of the old brickwork and building stone and ironwork — from its time as a harbour side warehouse — kept delightfully intact. I know this look, as used everywhere from Hoxton to Hamburg to Hoboken, can be more than a little clichéd now, but here in Bilbao, that most industrial of cities, with a long, long tradition of iron making and ship building, it makes perfect sense and reflects their proud Socialist past.

I discovered — but, unusually for me, didn’t attempt to broach — this bottle, housed in a whitewashed alcove in los baños which (not so strangely when you think about it I suppose, same country and all) looks remarkably like the inside of our old house in Casarabonela:
The bread machine used in their bakery is the junior version of this, one we’d earlier seen in the old town
The place was almost 100% full but we managed to squeeze onto seats at a small, wall-side high table; grabbing the menu which was full of promise….
…and it delivered. In the way that I talked about above, that was fun, sometimes frenzied, not stuffy.
Arrayed on the table in front of us in the shot below was, at the top, a dish of the Navarra Leeks with Pico de Gallo. In the middle, 4 gorgeous pieces of Euska Txerria charcuterie, chorizo, cold-cut loin, thinly sliced sausage and cured ham and on the bottom plate is chunks of their home made bread, still hot from the oven and slathered in tomatoes.
And a nice touch is their own bottle of water. Bilbao tap water. Simple, cold. No charge. Just there on the table.
Andrés the fluent English speaking, front of house star, told us that their charcuterie and meats are supplied by the team at Ein Prosit, a German restaurant and beer keller, only – literally – 5 minutes walk away from Basquery. It’s fantastic stuff. Look at the way the fat is melting on the plate at room temperature?
So, that’s it, the first set of picture and food porn from this trip. No Michelin stars here. Just enthusiasts using fresh local ingredients to produce simple, well cooked dishes served in a friendly and fun setting. Our idea of a good time.
And finally? This great shop-front, La feria del jamon, that we saw on the way back to the hotel that night. Sums up what I’ve been saying here, don’t you think? Ham. On tap! Anytime of the day or night!
