Now time for the @lazinefest haul of 2018! Firstly this cute tote bag designed by Panamanian writer @tameeksb is going with me as my newest and favorite zine bag! Go follow her project called @esmicultura. It’s a great resource for those seeking more agency and representation of Afrolatinas. Then we got zines on zines by @thickthighcollective @aggro_vader22 and a beautiful anthology called Group Chat featuring a comic by @kookookchoo #lazinefest #zinetour #afrolatina #EsMiCultura #afrolatinx #comics #centralamericanart

Tamika - Black Panamanian
Where are you from? Los Angeles, CA
What do you do? Writer and an Educator
What makes you a proud Afro Latina? My Afro-Latina identity has shaped me in so many ways that there is no way I couldn’t be proud. The beauty, complexities, confidence, and strength of my African, West Indian, and Panamanian cultural mixture is what makes me proud.
Growing up did you more or less claim your blackness/roots and why? Yes I did claim my Blackness. My parents did a great job of making sure my Brother and I grew up being aware of both our Black race and our Panamanian culture.
What type of images do you think the media, creates for Latinos? (how about Latino media?) How can we improve that? The image I continually see is that we ONLY have fair skin and long blonde hair. Even our own Latino media outlets only show one facet of us; which is why I am glad there are so many online outlets that provide an alternative. Because mass media doesn't seem to be changing its outlook on how they show us, I think us Afro-Latinos can fix this by doing our part to show that Latinos are made up of different races, cultures, and ethnicities.

@esmicultura @historianegra365 - 🇵🇷 On March 22, 1873, slavery was "abolished" in Puerto Rico, BUT with one significant caveat. The slaves were not emancipated; they had to BUY their own freedom, at whatever price was set by their last masters. The law required that the former slaves work for another three years for their former masters, other people interested in their services, or for the "state" in order to pay some compensation. The former slaves earned money in a variety of ways: some by trades, for instance as shoemakers, or laundering clothes, or by selling the produce they were allowed to grow, in the small patches of land allotted to them by their former masters. In a sense, they resembled the black sharecroppers of the southern U.S. after the American Civil War, but the latter did not own their land. They simply farmed another's land, for a share of the crops raised. The government created the Protector's Office which was in charge of overseeing the transition. The Protector's Office was to pay any difference owed to the former master once the initial contract expired. The majority of the freed slaves continued to work for their former masters, but as free people, receiving wages for their labor. If the former slave decided not to work for his former master, the Protectors Office would pay the former master 23% of the former slave's estimated value, as a form of compensation. #afroboricua #blackhistory #aboliciondelaesclavitud #historianegra #emancipación #puertorico #afrodecendiente https://www.instagram.com/p/BvcX-anlo6B/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=suofd47iopwk
