On Laguages
Today I did something I had already done a million times, and should have already done another million: I thought about language learning and planned ways of doing it. So today (tonight, actually) I will be talking about languages, my favourite topic, what a coincidence!
Languages have been around me for as long as I can remember, or have I been around them? It is really hard to tell, the truth is they have become part of my life.
I still remember a serie of magazines for children with collectables that, in every issue, would teach something about a country and a correspondent language. So as a child I had the opportunity of learning to say good morning in Russian, or in Romanian, or learning some words that differ in meaning in Brazil and Portugal.
As a teenager, I wanted to learn Italian, but my mother said English would be more useful. She was goddamn right, she was. The Internet was not as it is nowadays, so the only website I found to learn it by myself was in spanish, what a mess.
A few years later I was impressed by some of my school teacher, two of which could speak English and French besides Portuguese, one who claimed to speak Spanish, Ancient Greek and Latin and one who told us about his experience with the German Language. That same year I began to learn through a website called Livemocha (I don’t even know if it still exists) and so my affair with Deutsch started.
What was a dream of becoming a doctor became a dream of become a... Language master? A Linguist? What a surprise, right? Nobody could have ever ever thought I would be interested in Languages...
This is perhaps the silliest story I can tell you, and the worst part is that it is true. But enough of the past, let’s talk present and future.
Present:
Which languages can I speak today? It is hard to tell, but I’ll try. I claim to speak 6 languages: Portuguese, English, German, Spanish, Italian, French, in order of level. While it could impress some people, it seems to be to little to me. I once tackled 6 languages in 6 months, what became of that boy? Well... That boy grew up, got busy and realised it was all crap. “Crap on top of crap on top of crap.” (Gordon Ramsay)
But that it was.And actually... it is, because I want to do it all over again.
Future:
What languages am I going to learn? Short answer: as many as I can.
Long answer: I found a list of languages ranked by priority, which feature 14 Languages, including the aforementioned foreign languages. I seriously consider taking 5 from the list and adding one more, so until the end of 2018 I plan on learning 6 languages. Guess What, there are 6 months till the end of the year!
The languages I want to take on are:
Latin: I’ve learned latin for 3 years so far, but I still do not include in my list of languages I already speak because I do not speak it - but want to! Ignoring all the boring comments about it, it is actually possible to, and I’ll try. End of Story.
Russian: My story with Russian goes a long way. I have once or twice tried learning it, and I actually succeeded, but without practice I just forgot almost everything. I still know more or less how the language works, and I still can read Cyrillic, I just need to reactivate it. Should be simple, right?
Dutch: drunken German. That’s all.
Swedish: Yep. I have a fetish thing for germanic languages and from the Escandinavian group I chose Swedish because it seems to be easier to learn. And for those who wondered, yes, I tried learning the 3 of them, Swedish, Norwegian and Danish, and yes, I tried learning them at the same time. No surprise I failed.
Chinese: I had lightly started it last year, before I came to Germany, and because I got busy (I was in f-ing Germany!) I gave it a pause, then resumed, then paused, then resumed, than paused. With some luck I’ll get the better of it.
Those were the languages I had already since long planned to learn. Here comes the Überraschungei.
Arabic: Lovely language, new alphabet, first experience with semitic languages.
That’s for the my future. Sound fun, right?
I inted to partially use this blog to make updates on my progress, so thumbs up for people who want to take part on it!
Next time I swear I’ll try to talk about summat else. Also I wrote this text just before going to bed while drinking tea. So let’s just forgive this one :)
