TCS in trouble over bribe-for-job scam; senior executives sacked
TCS has been rocked by a scandal after discovering that some senior executives entrusted with hiring critical personnel had accepted bribes from staffing firms.
Over the past three years, TCS has added about 50,000 people on average annually but now the tech company has been rocked by a scandal after discovering that some senior executives entrusted with hiring critical personnel had accepted bribes from staffing firms. It is unclear exactly what the scam is about, but two executives who are aware of it reported that a whistleblower, in communication with TCS's chief executive officer and chief operating officer, claimed ES Chakravarthy, the head of TCS's recruitment division's resource management group (RMG), had been receiving commissions from staffing firms for years. Following the complaint, the company promptly set up a team of three executives, including the firm’s chief information security officer, Ajit Menon, to probe the allegations. After weeks of inquiry, TCS blacklisted three staffing companies, fired four RMG officials, and placed the head of recruiting on leave. One of the two executives mentioned above claimed that although the business has not yet determined the extent of the irregularities, those participating in the scheme may have made at least $100 crore in commissions.
Despite his email ID being active, Chakravarthy, who reports directly to the chief operating officer, Natarajan Ganapathy Subramaniam, has been prohibited from coming into the office. “While there are complaints regarding code of conduct violations that arise from time to time, the company has robust processes for investigating and resolving them to closure," a TCS spokesperson said. This development, a first of its kind of recruitment scandal to hit TCS, comes after K. Krithivasan took over as the company’s chief executive on 1 June. “The entire senior leadership is shocked," said an executive, who did not want to be identified as he is not authorized to speak with reporters. “This makes you question if there were enough guardrails, and how could such a thing happen." “The disturbing thing is that we don’t know how pervasive and for how long this scam was continuing. We hired over 300,000 people, including contractors, only in the last three years. Even if 10% of the entire recruitment was made through selected staffing firms and the staffing firm gave a commission on every person recruited, you can imagine the scale of this scandal," said the executive cited above. “I believe it will be at least ₹100 crore." Normally, major corporations would have robust safeguards against corruption that would jeopardize their operations and damage their reputations. “This is common in small firms where corporate governance is perceived to be lax. But news of this recruitment scandal at a company like TCS is a surprise. Simply because all large companies have robust audit practices and no one executive is entrusted with enough powers to abuse his position," said an executive at a Bengaluru-based company. But later in the day, TCS said it probed the allegations made in the complaint and found out that the charges do not "involve any fraud by or against the company and no financial impact" The statement made after a media report published earlier in the day also clarified that the "reference to alleged scam in recruitment process is incorrect".

TCS in turmoil: Bribery scandal rocks India's IT giant
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), one of India’s leading IT firms, has been thrown into turmoil as a bribery scandal involving senior personnel has come to light. According to a report by Mint, certain individuals within the company’s resource management group (RMG) have been accepting bribes from staffing firms to secure jobs for their candidates over an extended period.
Following a whistleblower complaint accessed by Mint, an internal committee comprising three members, including chief information security officer Ajit Menon, was formed to investigate the allegations. The investigation concluded with TCS placing its head of recruitment on leave, terminating four officials from the RMG division, and imposing a ban on three staffing firms.
One of the accused, ES Chakravarthy, the global head of RMG, has been barred from entering the office. Arun GK, another official from the RMG division, has also been dismissed. It is estimated that those involved in the scandal may have accumulated commissions totaling at least Rs 100 crore ($14 million) over the last three years.
An anonymous TCS executive expressed shock over the situation, emphasizing that this is the company’s first reported scandal. The timing is particularly unfortunate, coming just days after K Krithivasan assumed the CEO role at TCS. This news also comes as TCS bagged its 4th major deal in the UK this year with Nest’s pension scheme.
The executive recruitment process at TCS primarily relies on employee referral programs and partnerships with staffing firms. These firms provide candidate lists to TCS, which then evaluates them through tests or interviews before making hiring decisions based on their needs.
Adding Employees, Adding Bribes
The RMG division, responsible for approximately 3,000 employees, facilitates daily placements of around 1,400 engineers on various projects, averaging one placement per minute. TCS has been adding an average of 50,000 employees annually in recent years, including contractors. The extent of the irregularities is yet to be determined, but the impact could be significant considering the sheer scale of TCS’s recruitment efforts.
TCS has responded to the allegations, stating that the company possesses robust procedures for investigating and resolving such issues.
The revelation of this recruitment scandal at TCS, a company with $27.93 billion in revenue and over 614,795 employees, has surprised many. It raises questions about the presence of adequate safeguards and how such a situation could have transpired.
