Oh, and it looks like Mauser Frau is running a direct sequel to Satellite with mono no aware and chickens [links NSFW!]. What is up with that and all of the doctor stuff? IDK, why doesn't Troy have a doctor following him around canonically?

Trivia Tuesday: Sepulchre

Events leading up to and immediately after the birth of the Calypso Twins: a love story and a story about Leda and Typhon, though I wouldn't call it a love story about Leda and Typhon. Includes Leda backstory, Typhon backstory, ersatz Siren lore, a somewhat unsurprising OC and detailed explanation of "When we were born, our father had to cut him off of me."

Since I know someone who's reading it right now, behold some trivia. And spoilers.

CH1

I'm not 100% sure that's the first time Niven used the sentence that became the epigraph, but it was definitely the most famous. I see it as an epigraph for the whole series, which is why none of the other installments have them.

I linked the music at the start since the story, despite the genre shift, has such a consistent, melancholy mood I thought the playlist would enhance the experience even on random.

Leda's character design is based off of Ren from Pirates of Dark Water. Her eye-color is sampled from Troy's model.

Jean-Michel Sapphir was named after Edward Sapir and the fact I forgot good old Eddy and his linguistic relativism only had one P in a somewhat unsubtle nod to the fact the entire story was influenced by some very very relative linguistics above and beyond the conceits of "Tlon, Uqbar Orbis Tertius" that factor into the narrative.

Cygnus was originally a throwaway line in Satellite, but I figured later if I was going to be continuing the story, I might as well do something with it.

I actually got to like writing Typhon turning this story out and I hate it. More on this later.

The bit with Leda coming around the corner and seeing the poppies is one of my favorite things I've ever written. I have been paid for words not half that good.

A lot of the interpretive terminology Leda uses is from Camille Paglia. Sorry not sorry.

Holophagia is the first fake book referenced in Grimeverse. It comes up again.

I could rant for pages about why I made the decision to attenuate the seasons on Pandora, but LSS, you've seen my pacing. You know I like my everythings drawn out XD.

Literally the only reason there's anything Christian in Grimeverse is so I could talk about Gnosticism.

“ Eppur si muove! ” / “Yes, the sea moves! You got it, Baby!” = I should be hined for that.

Yes, Tyreen having the same musical taste as Typhon is on purpose. I imagine synth jazz is like an 80s Sade album crossed with Drum 'n' Bass.

The prayer in the temple is not just to take up space :X.

CH2

I had to do a sad Vault Monster. I just had to.

Leda & Typhon had five robots altogether starting out in this universe. I don't know what happened to the fifth one, only that it existed.

Yes, the splash image is Leda looking down at Ever-Flowing's remains.

Why do I keep calling her Ever-Flowing instead of The Leech? The same reason I say "eat" instead of "leech" for Tyreen. I'm getting a completely different reaction from the audience. AHAHAHA LINGUISTIC RELATIVISM AGAIN. Ahem.

Oh, and she looks like Tyreen, if it's not super obvious.

I specifically put all of the banter I could between her and Leda being as this was their only time to talk. Some of it I wrote in after the chapter was done too.

Because I really wasn't planning to have Ever-Flowing be the twin's sire. However, @wataredis talked me into it with so much joy, I just couldn't resist. She's also responsible for Ever-Flowing being the Aspect of Adaptation and a lot of lore in that regard that's come to permeate Grimeverse. She really made the story so much more beautiful with all the fact I can now use the tag 'ersatz Siren lore'. A round of applause, please!

But, yeah. It wasn't the genesis of the story, but a big part of engineering Sepulchre was making sure nothing the audience was told about Leda was true after all (and she's as much of an unreliable narrator as Typhon!): she's not an Atlas researcher, her team wasn't murdered by Bandits, she did not have two children with Typhon DeLeon and her name wasn't Leda. You can actually back hack what it was if you read around the series though.

CH3

Leda's routine with the blood is based off of a scene in The Book of the Beast by Tanith Lee.

A lot of this chapter was reverse engineered from things I wrote first that happened later: the crops at the homestead, how the twins were born, Leda calling them fish. The middle one was the weirdest to render from Leda's perspective since I originally described the twin's birth purely for shock value. Laying it out that it made contemporary sense... well, there's a reason that scene gets all wiggly. And they have plums because I was hungry for plums one day when I was writing.

The medical specifics are brought to you by @raidbossmadi's enthusiasm. I didn't actually do that much research. Mostly I verified what I knew off hand and hated myself for knowing any of that off hand.

I wasn't actually planning the conversation between Leda and Typhon about what to do with the twins to get so complicated and emotional. Like I said, I got to like writing for Typhon. It's almost later.

I'm not sure Ever-Flowing's daughter's name was Tyreen exactly, but that's what Leda heard. I'm not sure of the son's name, but I refer to her boyfriend/the one-eyed man as Atticus in notes and YES, he became the serpent. I forget who asked me that.

The twins still have the two pointer charms and you can see Troy's in Several Saturnine Lunchtimes At Doctor Black's.

CH4

This whole chapter is meant to be read to "Sunset Strip" by Veeshy, the song I picked for Typhon and his very particular variety of awful.

OK, so it's my sincerely held personal belief that even despicable characters deserve their 500 words about why they're despicable, so here's Typhon's. I tried to make his trauma commensurate with the crime he nearly commits, not a justification, but an explanation. And that's why it's really terrible. So terrible, it made me love him for a brief, shining instant. I then went back to hating him.

I also tried to shrink the sentences and vocab in this chapter to match with him not being as book smart as Leda, but I'm not sure how successful I was...

Dido's Siren power sounds familiar, maybe? This is comics continuity somewhere under the madness. Dido was awesome to write and I think I might need to show Maya watching a video of her at some point. Hell, maybe I'll throw Typhon in.

He's already been thrown in enough. Yeah, that thing about Sirens having men who die for them is real in Grimeverse. Real in the games too, far as I can see (so what happened to Maya is a cosmic fuckup of epic proportions) (or would be if I was writing that).

The scene with Typhon falling in love with Leda is foreshadowing for the entire series :X. Yes, I have kenning names for every Siren.

The scene that inspired the whole fic was Typhon finding the twins still alive above the bleached line down the valley.

The rock he left them on is the one Tyreen later uses as a lookout and I almost included a flashforward to her doing just that. Her ability to extend herself and Leech whole areas if she's near death is called 'poofing' in my notes because I am five.

CH5&6

You know, I estimated this fic would be about 5k. It's more than 30k. Umm. Oops.

If the scene with Typhon finding the twins still alive was the first scene I thought of, one of the earliest notes I added around that was Leda being enchanted with her little fish and I loved writing that so much.

I can see why people mitigate Tyreen's scars in their own fic, but that didn't work for me. And then I figured I'd do them all at once, hence the business with her face. (I admit, I also like the explanations that Typhon is somehow responsible or that she earned them herself by... being herself).

But yes, Tyreen did have issues eating from when she was born and none of you should be wondering if this comes up repeatedly.

And the first person she leeched was her mom. Cute?

Ugh, that was too much surgery. Too me forever to slog through that. Looping the story together with the last line was such a relief.

There was a lighter version of the twins coming around and getting their names that I wrote before I got this far for real, but it went in the trash.

Then I had to go and change my mind about the end. Like I said, I almost finished on a scene with toddler twins... that didn't seem like quite the right choice. So I let Ever-Flowing rant for a thousand words.

There you have it: the twins got in the state they were because Ever-Flowing looked at Leda's genes as a gift from Fate and wanted to play with them.

Oh, and the term "Ever-Flowing" is from "Tlon, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius". It means "the ocean" in context. Subtle as a brick, I am.

Sepulchre - Chapter 1

I got myself into a situation where I had to solidify the lore in Grimeverse and figured I might as well go absolutely off the wall with it considering where that story eventually ends up. Thank all of you for putting up with me while I was writing it.

Today's installment is pretty tame, covering how Leda and Typhon met. I mean, it's not G-rated because it's a Borderlands fic where Typhon opens his mouth, but there's no graphic sex. That's tomorrow or Saturday.

The truth was, she shot them. Well, a few of them. The ones who started thanking her once she’d put two bullets in that cowardly tyrant Sapphir weren’t going to make it on this planet. Letting them go was almost a cruelty. After spending the past Standard year with them?

She let them go.

From them she claimed one light transport truck with sixty days’ supplies for two people and two jugs of succ wine that tasted like acetate fumes.

She drove. The radio broke after forty miles and she had to shoot it to turn it off. Silence made her skittish, but she couldn’t take another minute of Bandits and Sandbillies and Psychos and shouting while Sapphir’s last words still rang in her ears.

“We’re going back.”

Nothing that had gone wrong on the expedition was his fault, of course. The crew screwed that dig up. Blame the weather for this one. We’ve got plenty of water. By the way, I’m keeping half of whatever you idiots find. Half of nothing was still nothing, though she doubted she was the only one in the crew who’d stashed a small find here or there in her pockets. She had a few of what Eridian researchers jokingly called dijes and some tablet pieces too small to read, the sort of stuff any half-assed museum could bum off of a corporation.

She had something, just not what she’d come for, a familiar turn of her thoughts that made it all too easy to imagine a motif running through her life.

Her father and step family had spared no expense, time or money, introducing her into the eccentric bushcraft debutante culture of Cygnus women. She got good at it, enough to attract attention. A boy had chosen her as his intended at one of the balls. She’d been fifteen and an off-worlder and most of all unwilling. She’d run back to her mother as soon as he finished proposing to her.

At her mother’s she grew bored simply existing in a cloud tower and started hanging around with the college students from two spires over. They brought her to their lectures with the name of whoever was hung over that morning. She took Overview of Terran Literature and Psychosexual Development and Intro to Xenolinguistics twice since she didn’t understand it the first time.

She never enrolled. She was assumed to be enrolled. In time she landed a transfer to another world entirely and, once again, she left. She still wasn’t sure if she said goodbye to her mother or the name of the senior she jumped into bed with in her celebratory haze.

She should have been angry about doubting those things until she forgot them, but staring into the shadowed streaks of hardpan beneath her, she felt only a background sensation of wanting to know, something she felt most of the time.

University life had almost suited her. She became a perpetual student, switching degrees, ignoring her own graduation because it was her third, working as an adjunct, sleeping in staff housing that was only slightly better than the dorms. She went to dances again, but on her own terms, and she brought home whoever she liked, seldom the same person twice. People argued about Shelley, Paglia and Austerbridge with her in public. She never said a thing about anyone hiding in the back of lecture, her own or otherwise. People came and went. Spring lasted forever. There was always a new semester, a new thing to learn, a certification she did not hold.

Until one day there wasn’t.

The dean of the language department introduced her as “our foremost expert on Eridian. She teaches a semiotics course too!”

And suddenly her room was too small, the databank was too small, her clothes were too small. Everything was too small. Mom didn’t answer when she called. She wouldn’t ask Dad. She was the only one of his children who hadn’t at least gotten engaged. So she took the job with Atlas’s research department and…

Shot Jean-Michel Sapphir in the face a year to the day later.

Part of her had always wondered what it felt like to slam a bullet into a man and not a target or a bird or the ground beneath her feet. Well, she felt like she’d been crying, except she hadn’t. She hadn’t shed a single tear since she’d gotten to Pandora.

She drove. Rakks passed over Elpis in the stringy, shuddering night.

Another chapter in her life closed. The motif, coincidental though it was, continued. At least she knew the name of the first man she had killed.

That is a really good question! And the answer is: there are as many factions in the Grimeverse CoV as I need to drive the plot, so an infinite number.  Some I know about...

-Red Army: Pro-Troy & Secular -Blue Army: Pro-Tyreen  & Secular -White Army: ??? -Silent Sisters: Pro-Tyreen & Spiritual though this sect has existed as long as Pandora has been peopled and is devoted to Ever-Flowing. -Presumably, Troy has a Spiritual sect that favors him, but they haven’t come up. Sorry, Troy. -Then there’s a group of people who revere the very early CoV members overall as holy. -And the people who just want to party. -Slight spoilers: Shrike has their own militant group after a few years -Slight spoilers: if there were ever any more members added to the holy family, they’d get a faction or five :D.

For everyone who just went “Ever-Flowing??”, that’s an alternate translation of the name of the entity who drives Phaseleech per Grimeverse.  You can read more about her in Sepulchre [NSFW overall, but the first chapter with the translation whoyerwhat is pretty tame if you don’t mind Typhon talking a lot] [and then she actually speaks in CH2].

So, that’s my headcanon post.

Otherwise known as “Sepulchre”. It’s also another grimy Borderlands fic. It was inspired by “Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius”, Bianca by Guido Crepax and those books of “sexy” fairytale retellings they used to print in the 90s. It was motivated by the fact I got myself into this situation where I couldn’t go any further forward in Grimeverse without solidifying some of the lore. Or, as I put it to a friend “meat tenderized the lore in”.

I hate lore. Can’t I just tell a damn story? I am, fundamentally, always in it for the story first. Then making people cry and/or throw things. You may ask what the hell I’m doing in Calypso-based Blands fandom if I hate making up lore, and the answer is, extreme LSS, lol oops. But I’m not just making the best of it. I’m having a great time and have met a lot of wonderful people. So many wonderful people, I’ve chosen to thank all of them personally rather than run this author’s note into quadruple digits. You are all lovely people. Thank you so much for all you do: reading, writing, commenting, cracking jokes and helping my old ass learn to draw. I painted wisteria, you guys. Wisteria! It was awful.

Anyway, “Sepulchre” is made of equal parts of things I’ve always known are true for this AU, things I had to decide while I was working and things I had no reason not to make true. It grew out from the scene of Typhon finding the twins still alive after he’d left them to die of exposure.

Yes, that’s been a fact this entire time. No, the twins don’t know and they’ll probably never find out. Leda never knew in the same way Typhon will never learn the twins aren’t his.

Things That Were Always True: Typhon’s ability to find Vaults being based on a streak of Teela Brown-esque luck, the thing with Sirens having people drawn to them, Sirens being subspace entities from another dimension, Tyreen having been born with exomphalos. Actually, if you squint, that last one is implied in Satellite.

Things I Had To Decide: the Rosette orbit since the timeline for settling Pandora felt like it was on fast forward up close, just how morally gray Leda happened to be, the details of Typhon’s lousy childhood + realizing I was going to have to be at least a little sympathetic towards him in spite of everything (dammit he ended up being fun to write), the whole thing about the poppies, the thing that Typhon apparently has some sort of reproductive issue, the kennings and Aspects for the other Sirens.

Things I Had No Reason Not To Do:

Mauser_Frau: unless it would make you happy that Ty is her own other parent 'cause it costs $0.00 for me to mention that little Tyreen looks eerily like her and then Troy's what Leda would be like as a boy so basically Typhon wasn't involved and that's par weird for me XD

WAD was here: Ummm...is it weird that I want the Yuri thing to be your canon? XDDD Please make that the canon, that's badass! Also HAHAHAHA FUUUUUUCK YOU TRASH MAN!

WAD was also responsible for the Eridium cravings. More to the point, I went ahead and did that. And it wasn’t a hallucination or altered state. It just was and now I know somebody who OTPs them. Sweet.

Sepulchre - Chapter 3

Events leading up to and immediately after the birth of the Calypso Twins: a love story and a story about Leda and Typhon, though I wouldn’t call it a love story about Leda and Typhon. Inspired by “Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius”, Bianca by Guido Crepax and those “naughty” fairy tale anthologies from the 90’s.

Since my third reaction to Tyreen and Borderlands as a whole was "When we were born, our father had to cut him off of me" = "Excuse are we going to get more details on that??" well, here's more details. A lot of them. Some less pleasant than others.

So, there you be. That's what it's like to be pregnant with twin space witches who turn out to be stuck together; something that will never happen, but which someone has written about nonetheless.

Also, the chronological first time for the fish thing from Satellite (also NSFW). If you don't know what I mean, maybe have a look.

@darkmagicdrag0n got their MerMay and their speechifying on this week. Tyreen, I think you might be in trouble... I 100% know you're in trouble and *popcorn*.
